NEWS & REVEWS Van Dyke Parks & Tom McDermott
Recently, weekly public radio show “American Routes” featured a conversation with Van Dyke Parks, the “man behind the curtain” for so many artists including Brian Wilson and the Beach Boys, Ry Cooder, Lowell George, and Randy Newman, among many others. He recently became a fan of pianist Tom McDermott, a St. Louis-born, New Orleans-dwelling and Brazilianinfluenced vernacular virtuoso, and thought enough of McDermott’s recorded repertoire to collect and reissue some of it!
DAN WEISS
Dan Weiss’ new album Fourteen recently charted at #25 on the Traditional Jazz chart, and #41 on the Jazz Albums chart! Additionally, the record has been getting some amazing press including write-ups from Ben Ratliff (New York Times) and Peter Margasak (Chicago Reader): “As impressive as his playing and writing have been in the past, they in no way prepared me for the vision he shares on his excellent new album.”

Optimism can be a hard quality to come by, especially in a world that seems to pride itself on cynicism and negativity. But that’s exactly why we need a band like Gulp in our lives! This lush Welsh pop group is happy to consider itself an antidote to the creeping pessimism of modern life. And the couple has plenty to be enthused about: Guto Pryce has a musical legacy to be proud of, having spent the past 20 years as bassist and vocalist for UK pop superstars Super Furry Animals. And he and vocalist Lindsey Leven are still glowing from their marriage late last year.

Track Listing: Game Love • Let’s Grow • Clean and Serene • Vast Space • Grey Area • Seasoned Sun • Play • Hot Water • Everything • I Want To Dance
Season Sun is a fuzzy, buzzy, upbeat ode to the changing seasons. There’s some connection to be found between these sounds and what Pryce accomplished as a member of the Furries; the two projects share a love of warm vintage synth sounds and a burnished brand of psychedelia. But Gulp expresses itself with almost throwback sentiments. Apart from a few moments, Season Sun could easily be mistaken for a lost gem of the late ’60s unearthed by a studious crate digger. Gulp’s humble beam of multicolored musical light has already made its way through the band’s native UK thanks to well-loved lead single “Game Love” and a tour supporting Django Django.
“An amalgam of 21st-century electronic squiggles and vintage airy psych-folk, as contemporary as video games and as old as the hills.”
Key Markets: Los Angeles, Austin, Chicago, New York, Washington DC, Seattle, Portland “Less off-kilter than some of Super Furry Animals’ work, the new song is driving, moody, and a little psychedelic with Lindsey’s cool, hushed vocals casually taking the lead.

Between the distant moons of Kronulos, one man fights against the tyranny of The Ant-Lords… But that man hasn’t been born yet. Now in their 8,000th decade, Everything Goes Cold chronicle a completely unrelated story about a wooden donkey and a guy in an ugly purple hat with Black Out the Sun, their first new full-length album in five years. At long last, EGC bring together the universally held basic human desire to weaponize kitchen appliances, and the immense worldwide popularity of industrial music. A sweeping 11-part epic replete with screaming and bleepy 8-bit video game sounds, Black Out the Sun makes a questionable foray into local politics and winds up getting tossed out of a city council meeting after repeatedly trying to take a bite out of the podium. It’s not a pretty scene, but maybe if you truly believed in yourself it could be. Blind Thorns conjures a hypnotic and horrifying dreamscape of sounds, simultaneously entrancing and pummeling listeners into ecstatic acquiescence! Wordless saccharine vocals, ethereal guitar, and meditative percussion evolve into brutal growls, crushing riffage, and relentless polyrhythmic pulsations. The uneasy serenity of a deserted cemetery, wind whistling on the breeze, leaves rustling, a train in the distance… Blind Thorns is brimming with images that seem to manifest just before reality is peeled back, and the sound of warped tape and backwards incantations cross fade into an echoic (torture?) chamber. Amorphous, telepathic, controlled communication between the instruments makes for dark impressionistic and textural listening that is unafraid to show its backbone. This record explodes, rocks the fuck out, burns, and sings — and thankfully, it does not take itself too seriously.

Pristine Origin is the debut LP from Hyrrokkin, an instrumental avant-rock power trio with boundless energy and a knack for navigating off-kilter, polyrhythmic arrangements. The album features seven sprawling, energetic compositions, marked with the influence of serialism, free jazz, and the creative rock output from labels like Dischord, Homestead, and Touch & Go. Just two months after forming the band in June 2011, Hyrrokkin recorded their well-received cassette debut, Astrionics, and embarked on a six-week tour of North America. The group has since shared the stage with Mick Barr, William Hooker, Many Arms, and collaborated as members of Kid Million’s Man Forever (Thrill Jockey), and with Black Flag guitar legend Greg Ginn. “Don Cab/Hella–ish guitar meets a punk-fusion rhythm section.” — TIME OUT NEW YORK Track Listing: Eightfold Way • Hydronyms • HAARP • Cosmic Influencer • Astrionics • Anacoluthon • Tamariz Key Markets: Hometown: Dayton. New Atlantis Records is proud to announce Solarists, the second full-length album by Haitian Rail. This record brashly charts the common spaces between creative noise rock and the jazz avantgarde, while shattering the restrictive barriers between them. Formerly dubbed Ricart/Millevoi Quartet, with a stellar debut LP via Gaffer Records, this new lineup features guitarist Nick Millevoi (Many Arms, Deveykus), bassist Edward Ricart (Hyrrokkin, William Hooker Trio), trombonist Dan Blacksberg (Deveykus, Anthony Braxton), and drummer Kevin Shea (Mostly Other People Do the Killing, Talibam!). “A wonderfully unhinged stew of avant-garde jazz rock.” — TINY MIX TAPES Track Listing: Trembler • Overburden • Scintillator • Flare Star • Seven Wastes Key Markets: Hometown: Philadelphia, New York, Dayton. Also: Baltimore, Washington DC, Pittsburgh, Chicago, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Sacramento, Richmond, Asheville, Detroit, Cincinnati, Columbus, Louisville, Boston, Providence, Lafayette, Indianapolis

This trio — featuring Aidan Baker (Nadja, Whisper Room), Gareth Sweeney (Gout), and Felipe Salazar (Muerte en Pereira) — returns with their second album. Caudal’s particular sound, with lots of guitar overlays and a propulsive rhythm section, constantly echoes, crossing borders between Krautrock, post-punk, and space rock. A rich and imaginative album for fans of fuzzy soundscapes! “[A] mightily relaxing mixture of krautrock repetition and slow-drifting spacerock. The rhythm section holds down sleepy repetitive grooves while Baker carves streaks of neon from his guitar with layered drones and crunchy psychedelic noodling … lots of moody psychedelic spacekraut and the occasional bit of head-bobbing stoner rock.” — NORMAN RECORDS Track Listing: Uprise • Slow Bow • 451S2 Key Markets: Hometown: Toronto. Also: New York, Washington DC, Chicago, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Seattle

The 2011 Brethren Bound by Blood split series brought forth the idea of this cooperation. Each individual track was dissected into single instruments, single notes, and distant sounds. When mingled, they seek to become a new language. “There is something so dark and disturbing and yet glorious in the Church of Ra.” — CVLT NATION
