amalgamated arts

p. 11

Amalgamated Arts represents the works of Michael Heath. Known originally for his compositions for the theater, Michael recently began writing for the concert platform. This led to a commission for a new string quartet for Londinium IV, the quartet from the London Philharmonic, and the success of the premiere led to the inaugural Amalgamated Arts recording. Amalgamated Arts comes to Allegro Classical via Launch Music International.

Christian MASON Unseen Light

Radiance comes from Christian Mason’s music in the same way it comes from that of other composers, going back through Gérard Grisey to Guillaume Dufay and the anonymous authors of plainchant. This is so even when Mason — like his nearest musical connections, who include Scelsi, Radulescu, Stockhausen, and Grisey — is dealing with complex, clangorous resonances: the sounds of bells, or of wind blowing through a frost-covered tree. Such luminous congruity may derive from an awareness of spectral music, but the stimulus may equally have been a matter more of acoustic fact and personal experience.

At the helm of the Camerata Salzburg, he conducted all of Schubert’s symphonies. When his illness became more serious at the end of 1996, he studied the score of Schubert’s incidental music for Rosamunde (D. 797) while in the hospital, but sadly did not live to conduct it. Of Schubert’s eight symphonies, the first four have not been available in Sándor Végh’s interpretation until now. This compilation contains previously unpublished recordings made in the concert hall of the Cologne Philharmonic during the Camerata Academica’s Schubert cycle, in which all the composer’s symphonies were played, between May 26 and June 2, 1996.

Some of the best music Erik Satie never wrote! Richard Fowles’ pieces are clever, beautiful, and witty.” — Alistair McGowan This music has been written for all fans of Erik Satie’s work. Now, 150 years after the composer’s birth, Richard Fowles has tried to keep Satie’s creative spirit alive so that new pleasure can be found in his distinctive sound. Un Hommage à Erik is Fowles’ debut album as a composer, and the ideas for the pieces came from the life of Satie himself. Fowles wrote a couple of Satiean pieces during his time at Brunel University, and he was encouraged to publish the compositions because “everyone loves Satie’s music, but has heard it a million times before.” Fowles heeded this advice, and with 2016 being the 150th anniversary of Satie’s birth, it seemed an appropriate time to celebrate his unique music.

What we’ve ended up with in the 12 pieces that make up The Silver Dial collection remains very faithful to his original concept. That was always very important to him, and he was determined that the finished album would reflect the theme he had started out with as his inspiration. Thus, the 12 pieces blend imagined memories a WWI soldier might carry with him on the battlefield.
