Overview Fronted by guitar-smashing, soul-shouting, anthem-writing buzzbomb Evan Foster, Seattle’s Boss Martians are the rock ‘n’ roll band to look for in 2008! These Northwest garage punkers are back with their first album in over five years, and all thirteen tracks on Pressure in the SODO are lessons in how to play rough yet ready unadulterated rock ‘n’ roll. Taking the album over the top is the Godfather of Garage Punk and the Rock Iguana himself: Iggy Pop! He wrote the Detroit-style hard rocker “Mars Is For Martians” especially for Boss Martians, and the tune features a titanic vocal duet between Iggy Pop and Evan Foster, with guitars so explosive they sound like a street fight between Ted Nugent and Wayne Kramer. Other highlights from Pressure in the SODO include the prog punk-infused “Don’t Wanna See You Again” (with the Jon Lordlike work of Martians’ keys man NickC), the Cheap Trick-inspired power ballad “And She’s Gone,” and the huge-sounding epic rocker “Elsie,” with its Thin Lizzy-meets-The Who guitar heroics.

AWAKE, MY SOUL
THE STORY OF THE SACRED HARP Press Quotes “Awake, My Soul features some of the most raucous group vocals that have been recorded.” — Pitchfork “As an introduction to Sacred Harp, it’s as amazing as the music itself.” — Birmingham Weekly “A fascinating history of a raw, overwhelming, unconventional form of Southern hymn singing.” — The Oregonian

Approx run time: 5+hrs. • As featured in TIME Magazine. • Currently airing on public television; slated to air on over 150 stations. • Special edition includes original documentary Awake, My Soul as seen on American public television as well as interviews, deleted scenes, and commentary by stars and filmmakers—over 5 hours of bonus features in all. • Forthcoming soundtrack will include Sacred Harp songs performed by Sufjan Stevens, John Paul Jones (Led Zeppelin), Richard Buckner, and Jim Lauderdale. • Has been featured by Paste, NPR, and XM Satellite Radio as well as many other newspapers and magazines. • Publicist will pursue all forms of press (reviews, interviews, and more).
Overview The first feature documentary about Sacred Harp singing, a haunting form of a cappella shape note hymn singing with deep roots in the American south. Shape note singing has survived over 200 years tucked away from notice in the rural deep south, where in old country churches, singers break open “The Sacred Harp,” a 160-year-old shape note hymnal that has preserved these fiercely beautiful songs, some of the oldest in America. The film offers a glimpse into the lives of this Lost Tonal Tribe, whose history is a story of rebellion and tradition. Filmmakers Matt & Erica Hinton spent seven years documenting this yet largely unknown art form.

Amplified Heat How Do You Like the Sound of That Genre: Rock Label: Arclight Records CD: ACL 21 Price Code: N (SRP $12.99) Jewel Case; Box Lot 30 NOT AVAILABLE IN CANADA
From their father’s passing in 2005 to the street altercation that led to Gian & Chris Ortiz being stabbed multiple times, Amplified Heat has endured quite a bit since their 2003 debut. Despite these setbacks, the band was able to persevere to release their best album to date. How Do You Like the Sound of That brings a more collaborative effort to the table. From Jim Ortiz’s in-your-face “Tough Guy” to Chris & Gian’s catchy title track, this album presents an array of bluesy rock ‘n’ roll nothing short of heavy swagger.

Overview M. Ward’s third album places him in the forefront of a modern movement that is clearly progressive while simultaneously sounding regressive, manifesting a genius that is pure and untempered. His music defies description except to say it is coming from somewhere steeped in early blues with a Neil Young overlay and the feel of country, blues, pop, and folk. People point to Tom Waits and others as Ward’s forbearers, but the muse here is genuinely unique and the sounds are those that only a budding genius could make. The opening riff of “Fool Says” feels like it came from Abbey Road, but by the song’s end you have been dipped in Young and Dylan. M. Ward makes beautiful music—sounds like you have never encountered—and sings along with the melodies as if he can’t help himself. Who could if they had this much soul? It is all coming from a very deep place, and you owe it to yourself to hear these songs because they are the most soulful and melodic tunes you will have heard in quite some time. If you put this album on your turntable it will be a long time before you take it off. The more you listen, the deeper it gets—just like M. Ward himself. This is genius—pure genius—and you need to hear it.
“Some time in 2035, I’m going to pull this album out, and it’s going to sound just as good as it does now. There’s something running through it that broadcasts timelessness and defies genre constraints.” — Pitchfork [8.3] ALSO AVAILABLE

Overview The anomalous pop of Jordan Blum is an ecstatic revelation—an exalting, singular, upbeat half-hour of music where instruments weave in and out of falsetto vocals that act as golden anchors. This is the most complete work to date for Dykeritz, the latest in a line of fourteen albums he has created since the age of 13. Bordering on jubilant and teetering on bizarre, the album is an aurally sprawling experimental pop masterpiece with moments akin to the instrumentation of the Zombies, the vocals of the Bee Gees, and the arrangements of Animal Collective. The ultimate summer BBQ, swimming in the lake, camping out with your friends, dancing under the stars celebration of life that music can be, but rarely is.

Overview From the punchy staccato chords of the opening track to the arena-rock posturing of the epic closer, The Weeks’ debut displays the talents of a band playing on a level that eclipses peers who clock in at twice their collective age. Raised on a Deep-Southern-fried diet of the Marshall Tucker Band, Allman Brothers, and Creedence Clearwater Revival, The Weeks proudly showcase the musical heritage of their home state. Press Quotes
A SKY WITH NO STARS
“A Sky With No Stars marks the band’s debut effort, which is making enough waves in their native Italy to cross the big Atlantic wave for their first stateside appearance at SXSW ’08.” — SPIN.com “Canadians play sunny and well-recorded pop music that reminds me of West Coast music, that kind of music that goes from The Beach Boys to Weezer.” — Rolling Stone (Italy)
Selling Points • Performed at SXSW 2008. • Won the MTV Italy Award for Best New Artist in 2007. • Won Best New Artist at the Italian Independent Music Awards. • Spin.com Artist of the Day. • Canadians’ video for the single “Summer Teenage Girl” was one of 12 videos chosen by MTV Italy to be broadcast during MTV Music Week. Other videos chosen included Timbaland, Kaiser Chiefs, Babyshambles, and Jennifer Lopez. • New media, print, and radio campaign by Fanatic Promotion.
Overview Canadians was born in Verona, Italy in 2005. The band released its selfproduced debut EP The North Side of Summer in 2005, and immediately gained huge critical acclaim. Blogs and webzines were the first to realize how catchy and interesting Canadians’ tunes were, and soon print magazines followed suit with amazing reviews. Although the EP was selfreleased and never got official distribution, the band sold out and had to reprint it. Canadians was featured in NME as a Breaking Band and played at the 2007 International Pop Overthrow Festival in Liverpool. The band was also featured in the US TV show Project My World, raising their profile among thousands of American indie fans. Canadians’ debut album A Sky With No Stars showcases this band’s great ability to play catchy indie-pop anthems that are unforgettable and timeless.
“While it seems a little unorthodox for a bunch of Italians to call themselves Canadians, playing music that sounds right out of California, there’s not a whole lot to scoff at when they manage to pull off a debut that is so unyielding and well rounded.” — PopMatters

Bass Communion Moltov and Haze Genre: Experimental Label: Important Records CD: IPT 193 Price Code: T (SRP $16.99) Deluxe CD Sleeve; Box Lot 30 NOT AVAILABLE IN CANADA
• Packaged in a Japanese-style mini gatefold card sleeve designed by Carl Glover. • Bass Communion has collaborated with leading experimental musicians such as Muslimgauze, Robert Fripp, Fear Falls Burning (on the ongoing Continuum project), Jonathan Coleclough, Colin Potter, and more. • Steven Wilson is also the leader of British rock band Porcupine Tree, which has sold over one million records worldwide and was nominated for a Grammy for their last album, Fear of a Blank Planet. • Promotional mailing by Important Records.
Overview Bass Communion is a project dedicated to Steven Wilson’s recordings in the ambient, drone, and/or electronic veins. Most of the pieces are experiments in texture made from processing recordings of real instruments and field recordings. The atmosphere of the music tends towards the dark and melancholic, but is expressed with an almost Zen-like beauty. Recently, Wilson has started working with a guitar and laptop configuration, and the first material in this style is contained on this album. Bass Communion has released several CDs, LPs, and singles, many of them issued in handmade or limited editions (which sell out very quickly). The most recent release was the super-low end Pacific Codex, which contained just one 40-minute piece issued in a limited edition of 975 copies packaged in a deluxe box containing a CD, DVD-A, and a book.

Using a battery of oscillators, ring modulators, and field recordings, Hasegawa has created an engaging and versatile album that masterfully drifts between spaced-out analog dream drone and a more extreme form of harsher droning. In 1990, he created C.C.C.C. around the concept of improvised mass-noise with a very loud sound. Members included Mayuko Hino, Ryuichi Nagakubo, and Fumio Kosakai. Action Strasse is an Indianapolis-based rock outfit featuring local legends Vess Ruhtenberg and John Zeps on dueling lead guitars. Ruhtenberg also doubles as the lead singer and main songwriter. Action Strasse is true rock ‘n’ roll with a splash of punk and metal; not the copycat crap you hear on the radio, but the kind of music your weird uncle would play when he came to visit. Heavy riffs, great songwriting, and stellar playing all around. The only thing Action Strasse could have done to improve their debut was to release it on cassette. Action Strasse, a quintessential Midwestern rock ‘n’ roll band, came about in an odd way. Former members of Majhas (John Zeps, Tony Reitz, Tommy Roosa), finding themselves without a singer, called on Vess Ruhtenberg, who was between projects. Ruhtenberg, who was in architectural design school and pressed for time, wrote a song an hour before each rehearsal and before long (10 rehearsals!) the group had an explosive batch of songs. Recorded and mixed in five days, American Gas Jive is a tribute to the golden age of the rock album. Songs about girls, petrol, and how religion and war are destroying humanity all fit annoyingly well together in these troubling times. All the members of Strasse have participated in other notable projects, some of which eclipse this band’s humble standing, but that is likely to change as soon as this inspiring set of songs is heard.

Overview Between 1988 and 1998, John Terrill (co-founder of the late ’70s new/no wave Dancing Cigarettes) recorded this album and made a few copies for close friends and for mailing to musical heroes. In another era, it could have stood next to Richard Thompson, Scott Walker, or Lee Hazlewood. Dropsonic The Low Life Genre: Rock Label: Ascetic Records CD: ASC 22 Price Code: O (SRP $13.99) Digipak; Box Lot 30 5% PREORDER DISCOUNT NOT AVAILABLE IN CANADA
“Someone’s got to die tonight,” declares Dan Dixon during the rambling shock of “Slit.” His stinging conclusion pulls no punches: “I hope to God it’s you.” Call The Low Life selftherapy via catharsis. Or exorcism. With loose-limbed and aggressive soloing on “God Lies” and wicked slide guitar work on “Paralyzed,” comparisons to Jimmy Page are fair, though Dan Dixon’s forward-thinking creativity also mirrors modern guitar heroes like The Jesus Lizard’s Duane Denison. Listen closely to The Low Life, and you might also catch snatches of Van Halen or cult heroes Shiner. Dixon, however, is nobody’s copycat. Simply consider that players capable of fully tapping the raw potential of a snarling Gibson Les Paul are few and far between. In addition to the jaw-dropping power and whiplashinducing time changes Dropsonic’s cult has come to expect, The Low Life contains some new tricks. “Brain Surgery” and “Going Down” highlight an elevated sense of pop melodicism that might more closely evoke Live at Budokan than Physical Graffiti.

Overview Originally released on CD by Secretly Canadian in 2001, this is the first vinyl release of this eerily addictive, majestically epic album. A near-legendary recording, Record In Red is Marmoset’s finest moment. The music sounds like it comes from that short, golden moment in the ’70s that never really existed, but is recalled and recorded in Wes Anderson films. It is sharply evocative of a hazy, brutal kind of nostalgia and longing.
