Overview Hustle Beach is the third album from Baby Teeth, Chicago’s reigning champions of brainy pop. The album is the fruit of a songwriting blog, “52 Teeth,” maintained by bandleader Abraham Levitan, on which he posted a new song each week for one year. Inspired by Philip Roth’s American Pastoral, he began writing about the dark side of suburban utopia, generating the lyrical heart of the album—songs like “Big Schools,” “The Swede,” and “Hustle Beach.” The production, live and lean, captures the intensity of Baby Teeth’s performances. Recommended for fans of Spoon, The Hold Steady, Harry Nilsson, and E.L.O.

“Enough earthshaking riffs and anthemic bluster to fatten the entire fifth grade at the school of rock … the perfect roof-down joyride for backstreet summertime slumming.” — Pitchfork ALSO AVAILABLE

The Moog Razzmatazz Orfeum

Overview Hungary has made some notable contributions to the world over the years—goulash, the Rubik’s Cube, and Zsa Zsa Gabor among them—but rock music certainly doesn’t come to mind … until now! The Moog blends glam, ’60s garage punk, and goth with catchy pop-rock on their second album, Razzmatazz Orfeum. Led by baritone-voiced singer Tonyo Szabó, The Moog is Hungary’s biggest and most popular alternative band. Their highly anticipated sophomore album was recorded in Seattle with producer Geoff Ott (Pearl Jam, Mark Lanegan) and offers the listener something quite uncommon in this day and age: immersion in a total album experience. The disc is crammed full of immediately catchy songs inspired by a variety of influences—Bowie, Bauhaus, Blur, Blondie, Bach—and the result is an album that stands way out from the overcrowded alt rock pack.

PETER BRODERICK

MUSIC FOR FALLING FROM TREES Press Quotes

“If this is what Broderick is capable of accomplishing at the age of 21, one can only imagine what’s in store. Based on Home, it’s bound to be lovely.” — NPR “Meticulous and compelling folk carvings … these songs, a hybrid of classical and folk, are delicate but have got guts, recalling Bon Iver.” — Uncut [HHHH] “It slips into a niche somewhere between Sigur Rós and Art Garfunkel, then demands you admire its impeccable artistry. On the second listen it sounds like a future classic. And it only gets better after that.” — MOJO [HHHH]

Overview In late 2008, Adrienne Hart contacted Peter Broderick about scoring her new work, set in a psychiatric hospital and centered around one man’s struggle to retain his identity in the most extreme of circumstances. Broderick, excited by the thought of scoring a dance, camped out in his father’s barn with some minimal recording equipment, a violin and viola, and an old broken piano. Most of the sections have a small core that is composed, and the rest is improvised.

Overview For guitarist/cellist Joel North and violinist/sequence programmer Bruce Blay, the melding of traditional live acoustic sounds with vanguard electronic processing is the most natural thing in the world. Woven throughout these infectious melodies you’ll find music boxes, shortwave radios, water sounds, and much more. The six songs on Little Brite conjure a universe whose ancient forebears include Steve Reich, Brian Eno’s looping ambiences, Brit-folk guitarist Bert Jansch, and Hindustani hand percussion; however, the wall-to-wall beauty of the proceedings is anything but reverential ear candy. Engaging, melodically rewarding, and sophisto-whimsical, Sleep Whale’s cerebrally atmospheric marriage of the Luddite and techno worlds makes for essential listening.

DELAYED FROM NOVEMBER 2008

OVERVIEW Peter Walker was the quintessential psych-folk guitar player to come out of the ’60s. Revered by Timothy Leary, who had him program the music for his TURN-ONS, Walker was one of the first to take the Indian tradition of ragas and channel them through the guitar into a sound that is pure heaven. His exotic, state-of-the-art fingerpicking transcends description and has influenced such artists as Ben Chasny of Six Organs of Admittance. This album, never before reissued on CD or LP, documents a beautiful moment in time.

MARGINALIZED INFORMATION FORMS THREE: OTHER Press Quotes “A truly arresting collection of music.” — XLR8R “Bonafide ear candy.” — RE:UP

Selling Points • Third album in the three-part series—collect them all! • Features ex-members of Physics, Thingy, Lesser, and Rice as well as current members of w0rkforce, Pinback, and Goblin Cock including Rob Crow. • Have toured with Pinback, The Album Leaf, Lesser, The Locust, and more. • West Coast tour planned in support of new album. • Publicist working on print & online promotional campaign. Posters available.

Overview The final album in a three-part series by San Diego’s enigmatic Aspects of Physics—spanning five years, seven members, and countless pieces of individual audio bits and bytes painstakingly pieced together to form the cohesive Marginalized Information Forms series. Whereas part one represented the marriage of electronic and rock sensibilities and part two focused more on electronic leanings, part three shifts towards the more organic live rock band side of the equation. MIF3 returns these children of the post-rock age back to their roots of amp stacks, drum kits, and crowded rock clubs. Taken as a whole, the MIF series runs the gamut from the bleeps and bloops of synths and computers to the distortion and dynamics of guitars and the human condition. Recommended for fans of Battles, Tortoise, Slint, Physics, Fridge, Four Tet, Stockhausen, and Kraftwerk.

Press Quotes “Morris takes his vision to the bass in a whirling cycle of percolation.” — All About Jazz “If music was a mansion, its genres would be the many rooms. While some rooms have a couple of ways in and out, Petr Cancura has been looking for the secret passageway that connects them all.” — Vue Weekly “A dynamic percussionist with a predilection for subtle, understated accents, Gray’s ability to shade and color with crystalline clarity makes him the perfect accompanist.” — All About Jazz

• Panel two of the Joe Morris/AUM Fidelity 2009 triptych features Morris’ new collective group concept with himself on bass, Petr Cancura on tenor and alto sax, and Luther Gray on drums. • The recording resulted in a warm and inviting glow with four distinct takeoffs and landings that one finds hard to believe were fully improvised. • Guitarist/bassist/composer/jazz master Joe Morris has been hitting a whole new stride of unfettered creativity in the past year. Wildlife is as uncompromising as ever, yet fully inviting and accessible. • Service/promotion to national press, e-media, targeted regional press, and college/non-commercial radio by Improvised Communications. • Ads with All About Jazz (NY), Signal To Noise, and Point of Departure.

Overview Wildlife is a new group concept from guitarist/bassist/composer/jazz master nonpareil Joe Morris. Within this trio, anything is possible. Petr Cancura, a remarkably gifted young musician, is a Czech Republic native who now resides in Brooklyn (by way of Ottawa, then Boston). His name was new to AUM Fidelity when Morris first spoke of his great musical gifts, which are on gorgeous display here. Drummer Luther Gray developed from kicking it in punk rock bands in Washington DC in the late ’80s to being a jazz drummer of great finesse and technique in the modern day. He has been working with Morris since 2002. The warm and inviting glow of their first group recording emphasizes a very modern swing, with each member of the trio drawn toward melodic elucidation via joy of creation. From the liner notes by Joe Morris: Wildlife improvises openly and collectively … The natural environment, the sonic landscape, the awareness of our individual and collective abilities combine to support the creation of the music we play. Intuition and technique are both used deliberately here; we don’t separate them or qualify their values, either … Our goal is to make the music soar, bounce, and swing; to sing, wail, and lament; to search and discover; to describe the obvious and uncover the surprises; to let it exist as it is; and to make it new so that the experience of listening keeps evolving.

David Thomas Owen IV Solace My King Genre: Alt Rock Label: Esperanza Plantation CD: ESZ 13 Price Code: N (SRP $12.99) Eco-Wallet; Box Lot 60 5% PREORDER DISCOUNT NOT AVAILABLE IN CANADA

David Thomas Owen IV spent four years touring and recording as lead guitarist of Ohio-based outfit Lovedrug. In 2008, after playing hundreds of shows in a total of 41 states, he decided to focus on his own material, packed his bags for the mountains of Montana, and began penning his solo debut Solace My King. The songs that comprise this debut are an obvious departure from the material of Owen’s former band. The 10 tracks transport the listener to faraway lands where knights protect castle walls, lava spills into streets, and all is rendered into dust. It is a spectral, mystical world one might expect to find sealed within a music box or trapped under the glass of an ash-laden snowglobe. From the apocalyptic bombast of “Armageddon” to the soulful intonation resonating through “They Will Eat You Alive,” each song is a colorful journey to a different place and time, coasting on the airy vocals and arrangements that David Thomas Owen IV has prepared and laid before us.

Overview The Weeks follow up their 2008 powerhouse debut Comeback Cadillac with this sixtrack EP of new material recorded with Comeback engineer Winn McElroy. Though each member is still in his teens, this release shows marked maturity in songwriting and musicianship, and finds the band moving into new musical territory, as showcased in the shifting time changes and movements of standout and live staple “Heard It All.” Oft compared to the Kings of Leon, The Weeks stay true to their Southern roots yet pave a new rock landscape to further distance themselves from the comparative pack.

Overview The Sane Design is not the first time Amo Joy has tackled the art of album making. In the thick of the DIY mindset, Amo Joy released two full-length albums, both recorded at home on their sturdy Vestax 6-track cassette recorder. The Sane Design was originally intended to be a four-song EP, representing a “best of” from two previous albums, until Standard stepped in and said, “Hey, we’d really love to put out a full length.” Amo Joy agreed, headed back into their basement, and fired up the Vestax.

Overview What happens when a quiet librarian writes and records a concept album? Why, you get an album that’s all about sex. And not just any kind of sex! Rough Stuff is a brutal, crass, and at times hilarious meditation on all things sexual. Sinful Jello Biafra-esque vocals take teenage angst to the next level over a rhythm section reminiscent of early ’80s California punk. Originally self-released on vinyl only, this masterpiece of immoral songwriting has been excavated and re-released as a digipak CD, in the original silk-screened LP jacket.

Overview Hot on the heels of their sold-out debut 7” single, The Nymphets have whipped up three more relentless tracks all clocking in under the two-minute mark. Their twangy pop punk is a direct descendent of the melodic sensibilities of the Undertones, the incessant drive of the Ramones, and the trashiness of Supercharger along with their own unadulterated geekiness. This latest installment brings forth two new songs along with a fiery take on The Troggs’ “With a Girl Like You,” guaranteed to make you flip this single over again and again.

Overview The first serving of Devil Eyes’ first full-length album, to be released for the rock-starved masses in 2009. Devil Eyes have been carving their name into the underbelly of Montreal’s rock scene since early 2006. Their music is a raw, lean explosion of garage, no-wave, klezmer, noise, blues, metal, and Japanese punk, yet they somehow manage to make sense out of the chaos in a joyfully ear-shattering ream of songs. The trio makes their own style of experimental dance-punk, but checks influences like Motörhead, Guitar Wolf, Comets On Fire, Les Rallizes Dénudés, and Captain Beefheart as well as bands like ESG and The Contortions.

Overview ESP’s first recording session was on July 10, 1964, in the tiny Variety Arts Recording Studio. Just before 1:00 PM, Sunny Murray arrived—a large, genial walrus with an easy agility that belied his appearance. Gary Peacock was next—tall, thin, and soft-spoken, with a kindly demeanor. Albert Ayler was last—small, wary, and laconic. Bernard Stollman sat outside in the reception area. As the music was heard through the open outer door of the control room, he felt a sense of jubilation. When the session was over, Stollman learned that it had been recorded in monaural, although he remembered requesting a stereo recording. Happily, the engineer had properly miked and mixed the session, and the recording stands today as a classic of the genre.

Pearls Before Swine One Nation Underground Genre: Folk/Psychedelic Label: ESP-Disk’ LP: ESP 1054 Price Code: U (SRP $19.99) LP Jacket; Box Lot 75 NOT AVAILABLE IN CANADA

Overview Tom Rapp, an 18-year-old draft resistor and college dropout living in Florida, sent a small unsolicited reel of tape to ESP. Bernard Stollman invited him to bring his musicians to New York, where they recorded their acclaimed debut, One Nation Underground, in 1967. Less than a year later, they released the equally strong follow-up Balaklava. Classics of the genre, which certainly would have seen wider attention had ESP survived past 1968, these recordings are now getting a well-deserved second chance thanks to a thorough remastering under Rapp’s supervision.

Group Sex [Colored Vinyl] LP: PRT 3003 Price Code: P

Los Angeles’ Circle Jerks set the tone for much of the West Coast punk and hardcore scene. When their third full-length Golden Shower of Hits was released in 1983, the band already had a sizable following and a reputation as innovators in the genre. This album further cemented the group’s position in punk rock history. The band’s trademark sense of humor is still present, witnessed by numbers like “When the Shit Hits the Fan” and the hilarious medley “Golden Shower of Hits.” However, the anger and frustration of tracks like “Coup D’etat” and “Rats of Reality” keep the hardcore edge that fans always expected and reveled in.

Selling Points • Regularly tours the US and Europe. • Major media mailing in conjunction with release date. Radio campaign will target college and independent stations. Review copies submitted to numerous indie/avant publications. • Ads with Signal To Noise and The Wire.

Overview The fourth album from the Hungry March Band is a 13-track manifesto of the brass band as social utopia. The marvelous inefficiency of the brass band, and the studied surrealism of the Hungry March Band in particular, is a secret tool for the production of momentary paradise, perfectly captured in Portable Soundtracks for Temporary Utopias.

PRESS QUOTES “There’s no need to argue. Merzbow stands as the most influential figure in noise music.” — All Music Guide

SELLING POINTS • Seventh volume of a 13-CD series of limited edition albums. • Deluxe handmade, numbered bamboo storage box available from Important Records. • Ads with The Wire.

OVERVIEW Merzbow’s 13 Japanese Birds is a 13-month series of releases inspired by Olivier Messaien’s Catalogue D’Oiseaux. Begun in January 2009, one volume will be released each month. The 13th and final volume will be released in January 2010. Each will be a one-time pressing of 1,000 copies, with cover art by Jenny Akita. Author, activist, painter, and sound artist Masami Akita has been at the foreground of experimental music for over 25 years. Overview

Deceh Deceh Genre: Drone Label: Important Records LP: IPT 258 Price Code: U (SRP $19.99) LP Jacket; Box Lot 30 NOT AVAILABLE IN CANADA

Deceh is a fine drone quartet utilizing traditional ethnic drone instruments as well as vintage analog synthesizers. This album was recorded on a centered room microphone as the group sat in a perfect square around it. This method of recording perfectly captures the focused intimacy of the moment, complete with the crackling bellows of an ancient harmonium. Bringing strict discipline, control, and patience, the group is able to achieve densely transcendental focus in its work. Imagine taking three notes from Terry Riley and stretching them out into pulsating 20-minute sublime pieces. An obvious reference point might be the recent Yoshi Wada Earth Drones reissues, but somehow even more transcendent. Fine drone. Acoustic & analogue. Deceh.
