Nail welcomes everloving records pg. 11–13 “Everloving is the label that, since 2003 (though it was founded as Enjoy Records in 2000), has delivered hot music action from wherever it arrives—among others, Jack Johnson of Hawaii (Brushfire Fairytales, his debut), Metric (Canadians), the Culver City Dub Collective (exotic Culver City), and Cornelius (Japan). They cherry-pick choice little records from across the globe and deliver them stateside. And they’ve got good taste in movies, too, having released the phenomenally successful soundtracks to Donnie Darko, Dogtown and Z-Boys, and You and Me and Everyone You Know.” — LA Weekly

Nail welcomes koi records pg. 16–17 Koi Records, based out of Houston, was founded in 2005 by Mark & Rebecca Jessup. Their personal eclectic music tastes and love of vinyl inspired them to start the label so they could put out collectible vinyl releases by artists from a variety of different genres. Today, no longer confined to vinyl, the label’s ever-expanding roster includes artists from the alternative music scenes of more than 10 different countries, with music ranging from melodic folk rock and experimental noise to oi!, punk, and hardcore. In the company’s own words: “Our records sell out, but we never will!”

TALL TALES & THE SILVER LINING

FALL IN

Selling Points

• RIYL: J. Tillman, Fleet Foxes, The Byrds, Neil Young, Little Wings, Grateful Dead. • Recent appearance at HIPNIC Fest, presented by (((folkYEAH!))), alongside The Mother Hips, Jackie Greene, Dawes, Little Wings, and more. • Featured on NPR’s All Songs Considered. • Has played with Kimya Dawson, Langhorne Slim, The Entrance Band, Tom Brosseau, Richard Buckner, Little Wings, Whispertown 2000, Akron Family, and Ferraby Lionheart. • Service to blogs and online music publications including No Depression and Heartworn Highways.

Overview

Tall Tales & The Silver Lining is the reified vision of singer/songwriter Trevor Beld-Jimenez. While the band consists of a core group of friends from Ventura, CA—Nels Rosengren, Jason Bays, Brook Dalton, Seth Pettersen, Brian Granillo, and Beld-Jimenez’s wife, Tania—the songs are versatile enough to be played as solo pieces, and Beld-Jimenez has embarked on several solo tours under the name Tall Tales. On the band’s fourth release on Beehouse Records, ten tracks blend folk, coastal Americana, neo-spirituality, and soft rock à la Bread. The group has been consistently performing for over three years, and has played shows with many notable acts such as Kimya Dawson, Langhorne Slim, The Entrance Band, Tom Brosseau, Richard Buckner, Little Wings, Whispertown 2000, Akron Family, and Ferraby Lionheart, among others.

Press Quotes

“That perfect middle ground between poignant, sobering folk and sunny ’60s pop (think The Tallest Man On Earth meets The Mamas & The Papas) and only reaffirms the talent and finesse we’ve come to expect from Tall Tales.” — Santa Barbara Independent

“INTIMATE AND HEARTFELT … A CAREFREE MIX OF COUNTRY FOLK, WITH SIMPLE GUITAR STRUMS THAT MINGLE PLAYFULLY WITH SPARE RHYTHMS AND SWEET HARMONIES.” — NPR’S ALL SONGS CONSIDERED

After six years of releasing pristine pop records, The Spires opt for immediacy over fidelity on their new seven-song EP, Curved Space. Recorded mostly live over three days in a small plaster (blue) room in Ventura, Curved Space lands somewhere between early VU fuzz and the English pop of The Kinks, conjuring up a lot of hooks and energy in the process.

These 12 very personal “coming-out” songs about past paramours are proof (if needed) that Mark Andrew of The Hamiltons has continued to push his creative limits. While Die Stadt Muzikanten was full of lush and grand moments, Balladeer is a more restrained and delicately crafted affair featuring sweeping strings and echoing loops that complement Mark’s signature “pretty-pretty-pop” sound.

• RIYL: Jóhann Jóhannsson, F.S. Blumm, The Notwist, Ólafur Arnalds, Balmorhea. • Collaborator with Peter Broderick, F.S. Blumm, and other high profile artists. • Full scale PR in-house. Radio servicing by AAM.

Overview

Apart from her work with the Wolf-Ferrari Ensemble and classical engagements, Anne Müller has often fulfilled the vague string desires of bands and collectives like Sdnmt, Phillip Boa, and Klez.E. Now, she bestows new freedoms upon herself and her instrument: loops, songs, landscapes, faults, and acoustic glitches find their place in her performance, and her performance finds its place among them. Nils Frahm’s biographical orbit is filled with sound sources, production, and composing possibilities. He is a member of the indie melancholy Siva, a collaborator of F.S. Blumm and Peter Broderick, a solo artist, and an Übertonmensch, creating waveforms, making patterns, and tweaking moods. Their collaboration, 7fingers, dissolves into sound, combines into rhythm, becomes pulse and motion and sleep and acceleration.

STREET DATE JULY 13, 2010

“The Kindergarten Circus are a garage band in the classic, post-British Invasion sense: blues-fueled adolescent angst with an emphasis on fuzzed-up freak-outs rather than emotional over-sharing and eyeliner … equal parts youthful exuberance and academic excellence, influenced as much by Delta blues and Blue Cheer as it is by contemporaries like Jack White, The Dirtbombs, and The Clutters … The drums are so thunderous that you’d never guess the drummer weighs 100 pounds soaking wet and holding a phone book. The bass is so deep in the pocket, so sinuous, that you’d be forgiven for thinking it was The Ox and not a soft-spoken mop-top from Rutherford County. And the guitars—oh the guitars!—stand alongside some of the city’s best six-string samurai in terms of intensity, emotion, and sheer kick-ass-itude, and they’re coming from a guy that can’t even get into most clubs without a chaperone.” — Nashville Scene

Disciple, the first solo release from Steve Roach/Byron Metcalf collaborator Mark Seelig, delves deeply into a meditative/spiritual style based on classical Indian ragas and their devotional aspects. Seelig’s bansuri flute and overtone mantra chants blend with occasional female vocals, tamboura drones, percussion from Metcalf, and analog synth drones from Roach, resulting in a powerfully engaging album supporting heart-centered practice, deep meditation, and yoga. Through the spiritual energy of the four long tracks, Seelig manifests an expression of deeply felt gratitude for the gift of life, for friendship, and for peace. The various ragas, vocalists, and chants pull the listener away from external concerns into a serene mood of profound relaxation and devotional contemplation. “To me,” Mark confides, “this album is an expression of gratitude to all spirit beings. Disciple tries to fully honor and expand the bliss and ecstasy that lies at the core of the soul.”

CD: PJK 119 Price Code: Q (SRP $15.99)

Emotions quietly stir and resonate in this deeply self-reflective album exploring the terrain between melodic electronic/ambient and modern minimalism. These six pieces utilize gentle melody, harmony, and sonic tonality to poignantly reflect upon the passage of time, life lived, lives passed, and a time of renewal: a sigh of the ages expressed in sound. For this journey, Roach drew on his essential collection of beloved analog synthesizers including a classic 40-year-old Arp String Ensemble, a historic polyphonic synthesizer that swirls and rolls upon itself like the strong currents of a rushing mountain river. Sigh of Ages is the result of extended periods of solitude and personal reflection for the acclaimed composer. Sculpted and refined in his deft hands, the source material of life itself took on a voice that spoke from a deep emotional well of subtle contemplation.

WORN THIN Selling Points

• RIYL: The Cure, Interpol, Editors, Echo & The Bunnymen, Chameleons, Stars. • Weep’s Doc Hammer is co-creator of The Venture Bros and will be at Dragon*Con, Comic-Con, Projektfest, and other summer festivals. Weep’s music has been featured in The Venture Bros. • Self released EP sold 2,000 copies to fans out of the trunk of a late-model Ford. • Recent performance at New York’s Webster Hall. • Preview article in LA Weekly. • Service to press, radio, and bloggers. • Promotion on Projekt and Weep website, MySpace, Facebook, Twitter, and more. • Direct marketing to Weep’s Cartoon Network fans.

Overview

Worn Thin, the first full length from NYC’s Weep, takes their aggressive and firmly pop-structured songs to a place of heightened grandeur. Sweeping choruses, horndriven verses, and lush production work seamlessly blend with Weep’s guitar-and-drum-driven sound. At times the listener is reminded of The Head On The Door-era Cure enjoying the strange bedfellow of Catherine Wheel or Placebo. Weep’s pilot, Doc Hammer, brings his uniquely raspy vocals to the front on this release, creating a bizarre but not unfamiliar kind of New Dark Pop. On Worn Thin, Weep maintains their hard edge and generates a sound filled with loosely bridled emotions and powerful rhythms. Doc explains, “This is the record we wanted to make. It’s almost like a reactionary antidote to what we’re sick of in music. That dry, lowtech production of the past ten years is tiring. It’s in its footy pajamas, and it needs to take a nap. We wanted something lush and dramatic for the songs on Worn Thin. They usually relegate that kind of over-the-top production to Lady Gaga. But believe me, it works really well with a messy little band like Weep.”

“Weep marks Doc Hammer’s return to the world of music from the world of The Venture Bros. Though he’s probably better known for his work on the sharply satiric Adult Swim cartoon, Hammer is no stranger to making music; Hammer was a founding member of goth darlings Requiem In White and Mors Syphilitica. Even with that pedigree, any expectations are likely to be misplaced as Weep’s sonic aesthete differs greatly from that of his earlier projects. Whereas those bands relied upon layers of sound as the backdrop for operatic female vocals, Weep focuses on a driving combination of dark rock and shoegaze sensibilities and features Hammer’s own reverberating, understated vocals … shows the influence of ’80s post-punk, but has enough subtle embellishments to make this more than a retread.” — Liar Society, 4.5/5

KNUT Wonder

Genre: Metal Label: Conspiracy Records LP: CNS 92 Price Code: Q (SRP $15.99) Number of Discs: 1 LP Jacket; Box Lot 20 Street Date: 7/13/10 U.S. ORDERS ONLY

Despite gaining a steady fan base and extensive media coverage over the almost two-decade adventure of their career—as well as making it to the Swiss edition of Trivial Pursuit—Geneva-based quartet KNUT is still occasionally filed away in the popular metalcore drawer. On their fourth full-length, the band sets the record straight. Three years in the making and again culled from myriad jam sessions, Wonder has turned out a monolithic album falling somewhere between explosive hardcore, noise-rock, math-metal, and psychedelia. Featuring notably more vocals than headline-grabbing predecessor Terraformer and a more varied and refined production than classic Challenger, Wonder has ended up a daring but entirely organic tightrope walk between beguiling atmospherics and brutal aggression, short up-tempo miniatures and slow-grinding fuzz-epics, hoarsely screamed songs and drone-driven instrumental passages.

Musician, supermodel, DJ, actress, venerated muse—there is practically no end to characterizing Italian icon Tying Tiffany. Between her provocative catwalk appearances for Diesel and her riotous live performances, the posh artist has created a unique universe that is about to expand broadly with her new album, Peoples Temple. When one hears Tying Tiffany, British goth godmother Siouxsie Sioux comes to mind as inevitably as Velvet Underground femme fatale Nico. Beware, though—there is a monstrously creative beast hiding behind those endless legs and twinkling eyes, a snarling fury who really has something to say. Tracks like the erupting “One Breath” or biting opener “3 Circle” deliver a vocal tour de force that effortlessly competes with Emilie Autumn in terms of intensity and charisma. True to the roots of the genre, the irresistible goth vamp delivers a lesson in punkish attitude, revolutionary gusto, and a lot of electronic reinforcement, strengthening her reputation as a truly exceptional artist of our time.

PreEmptive Strike 0.1 was created in 2002 on the island of Crete by Jim ‘The Blaster’ and Cryon. Having previously worked together on electronic projects, they decided to form a band making the kind of music they enjoyed, combining the harsh Dark Electro/EBM sound with powerful melodies, Eastern elements, and scifi themes. The year 2006 saw the debut release by PreEmptive Strike 0.1, entitled Lethal Defense Systems. After being forced to remain inactive for a brief period due to military obligations, 2007 saw the band back and fully operational, resulting in the highly acclaimed album Extinction Reprogrammed. Now, PreEmptive Strike 0.1 joins Metropolis Records for the release of The Kosmokrator. Dark aggressive melodies, harsh vocals, and an intriguingly original blend of influences make this album a compelling addition to any electro fan’s collection.

Overview

Are You In Or Out? swirls together sun and sea in 18 tracks boasting myriad influences—from African rhythms and Hungarian gypsy music to zydeco, Shel Silverstein, Johnny Cash, Lee Scratch Perry-era Bob Marley, Harry Nilsson’s 1971 album The Point!, One Hundred Years of Solitude, social consciousness, punks, surfers, skaters, whiskey, weed, and women—in a carnivalesque pastiche for an entirely new cultural moment. It kills. In a come hither fashion. Four years young, this rag-tag band of SoCal surf-punks is crisscrossing the country in a kitted-out school bus as they spread the gospel of the archetypal rock ‘n’ roll band. They’ve supported or toured with such luminaries of the current scene as Banhart, Vampire Weekend, Julian Casablancas, The Entrance Band, Dr. Dog, Kurt Vile, and more while simultaneously recalling a bygone era of the Doors, Captain Beefheart, or Love.

Press Quotes

“The Growlers come from where the surf (and the staph) hit the sand and release music like they’re paid by the minute.” — LA Record “Imagine a kinder, gentler Black Lips, or maybe an altbro Vivian Girls.” — Village Voice

“There’s a shuffling, Captain Beefheart-ish funk and tinny, surfside guitar sound that places the Growlers in the good company of SoCal’s best-known and darkly tripped-out musical bastions like Love With Arthur Lee.” — LA Weekly

“A BEAUTIFUL MIX OF LATE ’60S FREAK-OUT, FOLK CALMNESS, AND SURF ROCK.” — AQUARIUM DRUNKARD

Gozu first appeared on the scene in 2008 with the release of their seven-track EP. Consisting of members of bands such as Wargasm and Triphammer, Gozu laid down the rock but also brought the groove on songs such as the human empowerment anthem “Rise Up” and D.A.R.E.-baiting “Meth Cowboy.” It’s the kind of rock music that pulls up alongside you while you’re walking down the street, demands that you “get in the f@*ing car,” drives 90 mph down the wrong side of the highway, and drops you off miles from home at some abandoned rest stop.

Press Quotes

“Tim Hecker is the best-kept secret in the North American electronic underground. Fennesz, Janek Schafer, and Microstoria are all valid reference points—but once again, Hecker’s approach is distinct … the thick, meandering drones that permeate the record are shot through with seams of noise and static, but the dissonant elements are never off-putting. Haunt Me is alien, amorphous, and occasionally noisy, but always welcoming.” — Pitchfork

Overview

Antenna Farm Records is pleased to present Wind Up Wooden Heart, the long-awaited debut album from San Francisco’s Social Studies. With several US tours and a self-released EP under its belt, the band turned its attention to producing a full-length release that would balance the intricacy of its songs with the intensity of its high-energy live show. The result, Wind Up Wooden Heart, tempers the Fiery Furnaces with a love of unadulterated pop songwriting and heightens the arching melodies of Beach House with dramatic twists and turns. With consistently catchy melodies; Natalia’s enchanting voice; and special guest appearances by members of Bright Eyes, The Dodos, and Thee More Shallows; Social Studies have crafted an album that’s equally infectious and innovative.

Overview

Canada’s Humanifesto step to the forefront of Montreal’s burgeoning punk scene with their sophomoric release, The Infamous. Unconventional vegans with a good sense of humor, their last release was a tribute to NOFX’s legendary Fuck the Kids 7”, on which the band kept NOFX’s music and vocal melodies, but replaced the lyrics with their own politically charged lyrics. All 12 tracks here, and the album title, are anagrams of the band’s name. The process might have been different from their first album, A Declaration of Intent, but the result is the same: fast, energetic, and catchy punk on a recording that captures all the intensity of their live shows. Having shared the stage with notable acts such as Propagandhi and Strike Anywhere, and with a heavy touring schedule already planned for 2010, Humanifesto are sure to inspire and make new fans everywhere they go!

The New Blockaders are a group that, more than any other, defines the essence of true noise music. Emerging at the beginning of the 1980s alongside the industrial grind of Throbbing Gristle and the harsh, abrasive power electronics of Whitehouse, TNB stood out through a purity of vision. They can truly be credited as pioneers of noise music as we know it today.

Guano Padano, assembled by Alessandro Stefana, features guests Alessandro Alessandroni (renowned whisteler of the immortal Ennio Morricone western soundtracks), Gary Lucas (Captain Beefheart/Jeff Buckley guitarist), Chris Speed (clarinet player with Tim Berne, Uri Caine, John Zorn), and last but not least, legendary Italian singer Bobby Solo. Guano Padano’s music is a kind of road movie, unfolding between the scorching asphalt of Highway 4 and the juicy smells of the peasant festivals so common in the Pianura Padana. It’s a dreaming mixture of rock, psychedelia, folk, country, jazz improvisations, and Morricone hints. For this trip they are joined by Danilo Gallo, a double bass player with a dark, meaty style who has shared various adventures with de Rossi in El Gallo Rojo collective, one of the most interesting experiences of Italian underground and independent jazz.

From the time that Alan Lomax left his position as head of the Archive of American Folk Song at the Library of Congress in 1942 through the end of his long career, he amassed one of the most important collections of ethnographic material in the world. It includes more than 5,000 hours of sound recordings, 400,000 feet of motion picture film, hundreds of photographic prints and negatives, over 120 linear feet of correspondence, field notes, research files, and much more. While recording for the Library of Congress in the 1930s, Lomax made trips to Haiti and the Bahamas. The recordings made in Haiti in 1936–37 provide a window on Haitian expressive culture recorded soon after the departure of the American Marines, while Haiti was in the throes of a nationalist and africentric movement. This groundbreaking production of the story, the sounds, and the sights of the legendary musicologist’s trip to Haiti features 10 CDs, two books containing extensive notes and Lomax’s journal, a replication of the map he used (with added notations), color video footage, and hours of amazing, never-before-heard music that no longer exists on earth! “Tried by poverty and violence long before the January 12th earthquake, Haiti is also a land of resilient-soul music. Vibrant merengue, carnival songs, vodou chants, and the haunted-angel songs of a peasant girl, Francilla—Alan Lomax recorded it all and more, in the field in 1936–37. The recent and gorgeously annotated 10-CD box Alan Lomax In Haiti (Harte) is now a potent reminder of Haiti’s embattled spirit and folk art.” — David Fricke, Rolling Stone “The late Alan Lomax brings the sound of Haiti to life. Recordings that Lomax made decades ago are now being released as a 10-disc box set, along with a journal and other artifacts from his trip to Haiti.” — NPR “At once monumental and intimate … ranging from vodou chants to work songs to children’s rhymes.” — The New Yorker
