Susi Hyldgaard Magic Words There’s a definite magic to Susi Hyldgaard’s vocals on this set, a style that’s jazzy but also quite contemporary—spacey vocals on older standards, blended with a 21st-century sense of rhythm and timing. Music reviewers appreciate Hyldgaard’s groundbreaking approach to genres, and many have identified reference points as varied as Björk, Joni Mitchell, and Tori Amos. Her creativity and determination to explore such different genres as jazz, pop, house, trip-hop, and singer-songwriter traditions has made her a unique voice in the Danish music.

Klima Kalima Loru With their debut album Chasing Yellow, Klima Kalima established a prominent role as the creative spearhead of Berlin’s “young jazz lions.” Loru now proves that they deserve their reputation as one of the most entertaining, original, and adventurous guitar trios today! The band, based around Finnish guitarist and composer Kalle Kalima, combines outrageous improvising, complex composing, and a strong sense of ludicrous humor. With the help of nu-jazz pioneer Jimi Tenor, Klima Kalima’s new album is a treat for listeners with “big” ears. Upcoming article in July issue of Down Beat. New Releases • Before his career-defining records on Arista/Novus in the ’80s and ’90s, jazz and fusion guitarist Michael Gregory Jackson recorded his debut for ESP-Disk’. • The sessions, recorded in New York, Connecticut, and Los Angeles in the summer of 1976, are wildly meditative and personify the laid-back seventies vibe. • An unfolding stream of ideas makes these improvisations vital today: arrhythmic strumming, enchanted R&B vocals, avant percussive clatter, processed electric guitar, and fiery horn lines over timpani and flute. Composer and trumpeter Wadada Leo Smith, cited as a major influence by Jackson, is featured on the album. • Full service to national and international press & radio by ESP-Disk’. • Re-mastered from the original tapes. • Review copies submitted to top jazz publications, weeklies, and blogs such as All About Jazz, Signal To Noise, The Wire, Pitchfork, and Tiny Mix Tapes. • Radio campaign targets college and independent stations in major US cities. • Debut disc of Bill Dixon protégé Stephen Haynes following Dixon’s critically acclaimed Tapestries for a Small Orchestra (Firehouse 12). • When you hear Haynes’ trumpet speaking in tongues while Morris finger-taps African rhythms on his detuned guitar on the tune “Invocation,” you’re not listening to a typical free jazz session. Pat Boone Star Dust/Tenderly
Keel/Grant/Jeffreys Show Boat & Kiss Me Kate
With 13 million-sellers and 16 Top 10 hits (six of which reached the top spot), Pat Boone was the hottest property next to Elvis Presley. Also includes one rare “live” track Boone performed on the General Motors 50th Anniversary NBC-TV Color Special!
First time on CD! Two of Howard Keel’s biggest movie roles at MGM were the great American musicals Show Boat and Kiss Me Kate. On this CD, in glorious stereo, Keel recreates his roles singing selections from the two shows. Originally released in 2008, Echoes of Light and Shadow peaked at #5 on Billboard’s Top New Age Albums! • This album shows a more restrained and contemplative side to David Arkenstone, exemplified by the melancholy “No Rain, No Rainbows,” the dreamy “Entropy,” and the optimistic “Lightdance.” • Echoes of Light and Shadow has an organic sound comparable to Arkenstone’s epic Sketches from an American Journey. As David put it, “There are echoes between music and art, grand intersections where painters ply their canvases and composers shepherd their notes … There’s a natural balance between day and night, as if nothing can really exist, can have its own identity, without its opposite … Here are songs of the dark treasures of the abyss, soaring up to the sheer cliffs of bliss. Because perhaps, if musically, we face the darkness, then also might we hear the light.” • Full promo servicing to all national, indie, and online retailers along with national and regional co-op advertising. National and regional publications will be serviced. Consumer print advertising will mirror publicity and editorial efforts as they unfold. • Multi-tiered campaign targeting NPR, nationally syndicated and commercial specialty programs, CMJ & NAR reporting stations, selected AAA stations, satellite providers, webcasters, and regional public broadcasters. Additionally, internet radio and podcasters will be serviced. • An aggressive online marketing strategy will be implemented to spread awareness via viral and guerilla marketing methods, including online radio, blogs, ringtones, podcasting, digital downloads, and email advertising, as well as extensive cross-promotions with high-traffic websites. David Arkenstone: guitars, keyboards, mandolin, oud, bouzouki, percussion, bass Dov: violin, viola Susan Craig Winsberg: flutes • Secret On The Moors • On The Wings Of Innocence • Dark Star • Illuminations • No Rain, No Rainbows • Lightdance • Entropy • At First Light • Tears In The Rain • Drops Of Starlight

• Although better known as a composer (notably for his music for some famous films & TV commercials), François Moity is also a remarkable pianist who has played alongside Manu Dibango, Pierre Akendengué, Mory Kanté, and Charlélie Couture, among others. • For this very personal project, Moity has gathered some highly skilled and experienced studio musicians, as well as the Budapest Symphony Orchestra. • This album presents the quintessence of his aesthetic choices, which he defines here: “The idea behind this album was to pay a tribute to all the great composers who gave me a strong taste for music at an early age, especially music to accompany images. The first names that come to mind are Ennio Morricone, John Barry, Lalo Schifrin, and Henry Mancini. Then pop music, jazz, and world music came along. The result of all these influences is gathered in the present album. Heterogeneous in its form and homogeneous in its content, this ensemble may evoke the score of an imaginary film, or bring to mind the warmth of cinema theatres.”

• Paco El Lobo’s third album, Mi Camino Flamenco, expresses serenity while displaying his mastery. Many styles and rhythms are featured, all rendered with passion, sincerity, and deep feeling. Alone with his guitar, Paco sings coplas of intense poetry, radiating with both tradition and erudition. • Paco took on a passion for the flamenco very early in his youth. He attended celebrations and tablaos in Andalucia, where he met elder singers. After being introduced to the cante jondo by masters Pepe de la Matrona, Rafael Romero, and Juan Varea, he studied singing for dancing, which gave him great mastery of the compas and palmas. In parallel, he learnt the flamenco guitar and played with many ballet companies, an absolute must to complete his training. • During his career, Paco has created several groups in which he brings together musicians and dancers. • Salim Halali was one of the most beautiful voices in the Maghreb, irrespective of musical genres. Today, youngsters sometimes hum his hit songs, made famous by L’Orchestre National de Barbes (“Dour Biha Ya Chibani”) or La Mano Negra (“Sidi H’bibi”), yet they have no idea who the original interpreter was! • Born into a Jewish Berber family of bakers, Salim first dreamt of a career as a Spanish singer. When he arrived in Paris in 1934, he started with a repertoire of sevillana (notably influenced by the Italian-French singer Rina Ketty, famous interpreter of the song “J’attendrai”) and his honeyed voice did not go unnoticed. He then decided to put his talent into the musical heritage of the Maghreb, starting in the largest cinema theatre in Marseille before touring in other French cities. • Salim would have disappeared in the Nazi night and fog if he hadn’t been saved by the intervention of the Paris Mosque rector. He resumed his musical career after the Liberation, and once again his majestic vocal cords, pelvis movements, and darbouka seduced and aroused people, setting dance floors on fire in nightclubs. • In 1947, a famous and wealthy man, he bought Ferdinand de Lesseps’ private mansion in avenue Montaigne and turned it into a luxurious nightclub, which he named Ismaïlia Folies. The following year, he opened Le Sérail. • Later in life, Salim moved to Morocco, where he enjoyed many years of happiness, sharing his time between successful albums and stage performances until 1965, when he retired.
