Surreal Overdose Selling Points

• RIYL: Napalm Death, Sepultura, Kreator, Metal Church. • 25+ year history on core influential metal labels such as Relapse, Nuclear Blast, and Hell’s Headbangers. • Fifteenth studio release; first full-length of all-new material since 2005. • Huge cult audience! • Extensive US & European tours for 2011. • Serviced to metal press and radio. • Street teams being organized via extensive fan club for social networking and grassroots campaigns. • 400,000 hits on MySpace page. • Ads with Thrash, Terrorizer, Lords of Metal, and Metal Crypt.

Overview

Virginian death/thrash metal veterans Deceased headed back into the studio this year to record Surreal Overdose, their first full-length of all-new material since 2005’s As The Weird Travel On. The long-running metal maestros have kept the faith since 1985, summoning a slew of cult releases and building up an immensely dedicated fan base that has followed the band merrily to hell and back. Now, at the dawn of 2011, King Fowley and his band of ‘bangers have returned. The band recorded the new CD, once again, in Assembly Line studios with engineer Kevin Gutierrez. Drummer/vocalist King Fowley produced the record, which promises to push the boundaries of the mind while embracing the band’s signature old-school thrash delivery.

Genre: Industrial Label: WTII Records CD: WTI 67 Price Code: Q (SRP $15.99) Number of Discs: 1 Digipak; Box Lot 35 Street Date: 7/12/11 U.S. ORDERS ONLY

Claus Larsen launched this solo project in the early ’90s under the name Klute, but changed its spelling to Klutæ in order to avoid confusion with an unrelated drum ‘n’ bass project. One of the true pioneers of the aggro-electro movement, Klutæ mixes walls of synthesized guitar noise with Larsen’s chameleonic vocals and the trademarked EBM bass lines of his other project Leæther Strip. With the release of Electro Punks Unite, Larsen continues to push the envelope, taking the project to new heights.

In 2008, Army Navy self-released their debut album and quickly garnered admiration from fans and press alike. CMJ called it “some of the brightest pop released this year” and the first single, “My Thin Sides,” was paired with a hilarious video featuring Paul Scheer of Human Giant that took the blogosphere by storm. The band found more success via indie-rock date flick Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist, which prominently featured two Army Navy songs alongside artists like Vampire Weekend, Modest Mouse, and The National. The group has taken its dynamic live show on the road supporting The Lemonheads, Arctic Monkeys, The Dodos, The Soft Pack, The Like, and Cut Copy; and played explosive shows at SXSW, CMJ, and the UK’s Truck Festival. They were even asked to be musical guests on the short-lived Tonight Show with Conan O’Brien. Now, back from mastering with Greg Calbi, the boys are excited to get back out and play their new songs live in 2011!

Dirty Mittens’ debut full-length, Heart of Town, has been almost two years in the making. Holed up in an abandoned Masonic temple with producer Jim Brunberg and a rotating cast of Portland’s finest musicians (Laura Gibson, Matt Sheehy, Steve Berlin of Los Lobos, and Dave Jorgensen of Blind Pilot, to name a few), the band has lovingly crafted an album that is poppy and tuneful, yet layered and sonically serious. The band, led by charismatic fireball Chelsea Morrisey, has also crafted what is widely regarded as one of the best live shows in Portland, regularly headlining and filling 300–400 capacity rooms with dancing bodies and sweat, not to mention sharing stages, drinks, and hazy memories with The Thermals, Suckers, Dodos, Dirty Projectors, Surfer Blood, and many more. In late July, they’ll be loading up their big blue van (“Babe”) and giving the rest of the western states a chance to see what the fuss is about.

Not far from Venice, Italy they’re mixing up an adrenaline-fused rock ‘n’ roll cocktail so potent that you’ll shake for weeks after your first taste. The Brokendolls have spent the last year perfecting this cocktail on stages across Europe. Recently, they stepped offstage just long enough to record their second album at Sweden’s legendary Restless Sound Studios. Here, The Dolls find a perfect balance between the local Swedish garage sound (Hellacopters, Sonic Negroes) and their high-energy rock ‘n’ roll roots (AC/DC, Nashville Pussy). This album is as dirty and raunchy as the nearby canals of Venice, yet still pure of rock ‘n’ roll heart.

Overview

This release is part of a historical restoration project of Brazil’s biggest independent label from the 1950s through the 1970s: Rozenblit. The first chapter documents a psychedelic scene that developed in Pernambuco under the shadow of the military dictatorship, far from the music capitals of Rio & São Paulo. The music, featuring the likes of previously unknown artists like Flaviola and The Gentlemen for the first time, is a true inspiration. Watch for the super-heavy re-releases of all the key albums from this vibrant hedonistic music scene!

Overview

Any of the artists that form The Spanish Donkey (Jamie Saft, Joe Morris, Mike Pride) could create dictionaries of superlatives with praise their work has garnered. But as a cohesive unit, they surge forward into a new thesaurus, as a dream trampling through the woods on the edges of evening. Joe Morris’ melodic improv guitar lines sketching out space where Jamie Saft’s keyboards color in chromatic aberration nudged and prodded by Mike Pride’s outside of time drumming. Three artists who have made careers of developing new sonic spaces, have formed a new place of exploration and imagination. It’s the re-history of 21st century avant-jazz.

Steve Coleman and Five Elements The Mancy of Sound Selling Points

• Prior release on Pi was named the #1 Album of the Year by Ben Ratliff in the New York Times. It also came in at #7 and #9, respectively, in the Village Voice & Jazz Times Critics’ Polls. • Founder of the M-Base movement, which included such luminaries as Greg Osby and Cassandra Wilson. • Recent profiles via NPR, New York Times, Wall Street Journal, Jazz Times, Jazzwise, and All About Jazz. • Features both Tyshawn Sorey and Marcus Gilmore, two artists considered state-of-the-art on their instrument, playing together in a rare two-drummer setup. • Full press mailing and contact to newspapers, general interest magazines, music critics, jazz and contemporary classical music magazines, and influential blogs. • Full radio servicing to CMJ and JazzWeek panel jazz stations and NPR programming. Pi Recordings will launch a targeted online campaign through various relevant sites such as All About Jazz.

Overview

The Mancy of Sound finds Steve Coleman at his creative peak, incorporating a lifetime of research into African Diasporic culture and cycles found in nature & astronomy into his musical methods. The current edition of his longtime band is perhaps his strongest ever. Of particular note are Jonathan Finlayson, who has been with the group for the last eight years and is one of the most highly regarded young trumpeters in jazz; and Jen Shyu, whose rhythmically incisive and tonally exacting vocals Coleman employs as an equal part in the horn section. Completely defying the traditional role of jazz singing, Shyu’s passionate vocals bring an emotional element to this complex and cutting-edge music. They are backed by an unusual two-drummer rhythm section featuring Tyshawn Sorey and Marcus Gilmore, considered by many to be the state-of-the-art in jazz.

Kouhei Matsunaga & Asmus Tietchens Split 12” Genre: Electronica Label: Important Records LP: IPT 334 Price Code: R (SRP $17.99) Number of Discs: 1 LP Jacket; Box Lot 30 Street Date: 7/26/11 U.S. ORDERS ONLY

Last summer Important released some highly praised records with Kouhei Matsunaga including a collaborative CD with Sean Booth (Autechre) and Mika Vainio (Pan Sonic), a split LP with Mika Vainio, and a full-length CD of his own solo work. The breadth and quality of Kouhei’s work was apparent across these three releases, and his compositions for this split LP serve to create connections between his beat-based work and his more abstract soundscapes. Asmus Tietchen’s contribution to contemporary electronic music is immense. The two pieces making up his side of the record have been sculpted from stochastic sequences of pure sine waves as well as guitar samples given to him by Dirk Serries (Fear Falls Burning), not for the purpose of collaboration but for processing purposes.

Asmus Tietchens: Die Kopflosen Frauen Von Unger • Gitter • Kouhei Matsunaga: Margin Sequence #1 • Chasing The Night

“Add HANSEL & GRETEL to the list of instant classics. This freaky fable manages to outdo even the likes of PAN’S LABYRINTH and THE ORPHANAGE in its presentation of a bold and beautiful, but still downright terrifying, adult nightmare. See it and prepare to be amazed. It is one of the year’s best.” — FANGORIA When a young man gets lost on a country road, he meets a mysterious girl and is led to her fairytale house in the middle of the forest. There, he is trapped with the girl and her siblings, who seemingly never age. Soon he discovers that the way out is written in a book—a book that tells his own story! • Blu-ray and bonus DVD in one two-disc package! • Teaser trailer has over 100,000 hits to date on YouTube. • Extras: Making Of, Promotional Trailer, and Stills Gallery.
