• Cornetist Nat Adderley found fame as the “brass section” with his brother Cannonball Adderley’s quintet. The brothers played together most of the time for 20 years, until Cannonball’s premature death in 1975. Nat, after some time off, formed a new quintet that at various times featured Sonny Fortune, Antonio Hart, and Vincent Herring in Cannonball’s spot. Herring lasted the longest, and fit in perfectly in the group. • Workin’ features the 1992 version of the Nat Adderley Quintet performing live. At the time, the group included Herring, pianist Rob Bargad, bassist Walter Booker, and drummer Jimmy Cobb. • Features lengthy versions of five Nat Adderley originals including “The Chant,” “The Big J,” and his most famous song, “Work Song.” • Due to Adderley’s better-than-usual playing from this period, the tightness of the group, and Herring’s inventive solos, Workin’ is one of the finest recordings by this quintet!

• For more than 40 years, drummer Louis Hayes has been a catalyst for energetic, unrelenting swing in his self-led bands, as well as in those whose respective leaders read like an encyclopedia of straight ahead post-bop modern jazz. • For this high-quality hard bop set, the veteran drummer put together an accurately titled “super quartet” that featured tenor saxophonist Javon Jackson, pianist Kirk Lightsey, and bassist Essiet Essiet. The music, which is comprised of seven jazz standards plus a tenor/drums take on a blues tune called “Blue Lou” (not the swing standard), is spontaneous, full of energy, and superbly played. • Hayes has a long history including major stints with the Horace Silver Quintet (1956–59), the Cannonball Adderley Quintet (1959–65), and the Oscar Peterson Trio (1965–67) in addition to spending three years as a member of the McCoy Tyner Trio. In addition to his freelance work during the past 45 years, he has often led his own all-star groups including notable quintets that he co-led with Junior Cook and Woody Shaw.

Anxious to reproduce them in their original form and spirit, they chant without any musical accompaniment.
Choro is probably one of the oldest, and most deeply Brazilian, of the country’s various musical styles. What creates an element of surprise here, is the introduction of the oboe and English horn! This project is carried by three virtuoso musicians — two Brazilians and a Frenchman — all of whom are fond of tradition and improvisation. Oboman Fillon is acknowledged for numerous collaborations on the French jazz scene.
