PORTLAND BAROQUE MEDIA

p. 6

Portland Baroque Orchestra produces intimate and historically informed interpretations of music composed before 1840, both in live performance and on recording. Renowned Dutch harpsichordist Ton Koopman brought PBO national recognition in the 1980s, and celebrated violinist Monica Huggett, founding concertmaster of Koopman’s Amsterdam Baroque, was made PBO Artistic Director in 1995, a post she still holds to this day. Portland Baroque Orchestra comes to Allegro Classical via Cappella Romana.

PRIORY RECORDS

p. 15–16

Priory Records was founded in 1980 by Neil Collier and Paul Crichton. Paul is a renowned audiovisual engineer, and Neil has had a life-long dedication to choral and organ music. Neil felt that important areas and aspects of the huge repertoire of church music were being seriously neglected and lost by recording enterprises specializing in this widely embracing branch of music, whose roots are historically buried in ancient times. Since its foundation, Priory has grown into a company with a reputation for opening up a previously neglected but inspirational branch of music-making, and has compiled the largest catalog of choral and organ music in the world. Priory Records comes to Allegro Classical via Launch Music International Ltd.

MG MUSIC

p. 17

MG Music is the label of Matthew Gee, who is making a name for himself as one of the freshest and most imaginative trombone players on the current scene. Principal trombone with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, Matthew has played with some of the finest orchestras — most recently the Vienna Philharmonic — and has recorded and performed on many film and television scores. MG Music comes to Allegro Classical via Launch Music International Ltd.

VANITAS

p. 18

Created in 2011 by Andrés Alberto Gómez, the label VANITAS was born as a necessity of artistic expression. VANITAS always focuses its activities on talented musicians and new baroque ensembles, the ideal of its founder being to offer genuine and ambitious programs that offer new perspectives for the early music repertory. S. Bach. Award-winning baroque violinist and artistic director Monica Huggett leads Portland Baroque violinists Carla Moore, Rob Diggins, Jolianne Einem, and Adam LaMotte. The experienced, renowned, and awarded ensemble Al Ayre Español imbues this performance with their usual drive and intensity. Founded in 1988 by conductor Eduardo López Banzo, Al Ayre Español sought to challenge the pervading clichés that often surrounded the performance of Spanish baroque music at that time. Concertos by Elgar, Finzi, and Walton lie at the heart of his repertoire, which also includes concertante works by Arnold, Bax, Bliss, Havergal Brian, Britten, and many more. All three items presented on this disc were written especially for Wallfisch.

BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra Lionel Friend: conductor BBC Philharmonic Orchestra Edward Downes: conductor Adrian Leaper: conductor LIPKIN: Sinfonia di Roma (Symphony No. 1) • The Pursuit (Symphony No. 2) • Sun (Symphony No. 3) Malcolm Lipkin belongs to a generation of composers who came to prominence in Britain between the mid-1950s and the mid-1960s. Several of these figures began their careers as a “progressive,” exploring the newlydiscovered range of technical and formal innovations before later forging their own relationship with tonality. In Lipkin’s case, early influences such as Bartók and Stravinsky were gradually assimilated into an original voice as his scores moved from long, lyrical lines and motor-rhythms to tiny motifs and rhythmic cells in a more dissonant style. It is hoped this release will generate interest in a composer who has steadily forged his own path regardless of passing trends, to create a body of work of impeccable integrity which still largely awaits rediscovery.

Sir Arthur BLISS

Following demobilization from the army in 1919, Bliss wrote four exploratory essays in sonority and textures, including Madam Noy and Rout. They accorded him a short-lived reputation as an enfant terrible, but they can also be said to have paved the way for his first large-scale orchestral work, the Colour Symphony. The “witchery song” Madam Noy (1918) is a bizarre variation on the old nursery rhyme “Old Mother Hubbard.” Rout is used in the old sense of popular revelry, and is a vibrant score evoking the snatches of song that might be caught by someone watching a carnival. For the rarely encountered scena for contralto and orchestra, The Enchantress, the text was supplied by Bliss’s poet friend Henry Reed. And finally, Bliss was Master of the Queen’s Musick when he was commissioned to write The Beatitudes for the Festival of 1962 to mark the opening of the new Coventry Cathedral.

Incomparable composer and pianist John McCabe, who passed away in February 2015, had recorded Nielsen’s Piano Music on LP for Decca’s Ace of Diamonds back in 1975. More recently, the SOMM label was approached by John’s wife, Monica McCabe, to ask if they would consider issuing it on CD. From an early age, John loved to explore little-known works and considered Nielsen’s Suite, Op. 45 a true masterpiece. The piano music of Nielsen, whose 150th anniversary is celebrated this year, is overshadowed by his six symphonies but his piano music has always had a special place in the hearts of music lovers worldwide. These recordings have been unavailable for many years; now newly re-mastered, they are given a new lease on life and serve as a timely reminder of McCabe’s unique interpretations. Each quartet was conceived as a non-programmatic abstract piece of music; however, the first and fourth are “descriptive” in that they were inspired by specific landscapes: respectively, the East Suffolk Coast and Beacon Fell Lancashire. After recovering from the initial shock, he reinvented himself as a left-handed pianist, rising to the challenge of making one hand do the work of two and discovering a new and unexpectedly extensive repertoire of exciting, challenging music to which he is adding by commissioning new works from contemporary composers and making his own left-hand arrangements of suitable classics.

Named Gramophone Editor’s Choice in August 2009! King’s College, Cambridge is famed the world over for its music. Yet many who enjoy its sound recordings might be surprised at the visual splendor of its surroundings, and the discovery that a mere College Chapel can offer sights to rival some of the UK’s greatest cathedrals. This DVD aims to bring some of that spectacle to a wider audience, including shots of both Chapel and College within the context of the recital. Stephen Cleobury is a highly versatile musician who relishes the opportunities he has to operate in a variety of roles and across a broad range of repertoire. At the center of his musical life, for over a quarter of a century, has been his work as Organist and Director of Music at King’s College, Cambridge.

But these characteristics have been dissolved over the centuries, and we’re left with a sorely misunderstood instrument. This recording highlights these strengths by pairing works, swiftly alternating between 20th-century showpieces and 19th-century songs, thus resurrecting the long-lost Jekyll & Hyde character of the solo trombone.

He was born into a musical family with ties to Seiersten bedehus, a religious meetinghouse. Thus Hovland’s earliest musical impulses were revival hymns. From there, his path led to an education in church music. When he had attained the highest level his country could offer, and with excellent marks, he continued his journey with composition studies in Norway, Denmark, Italy, and the U.S. Hovland wrote large works — symphonies, concertos, operas, choral works, organ music, and much more — and composed smaller-scale works, such as chorales and biblical hymns. In some aspects of his compositional activity, Hovland was someone who sought out new paths and broke new ground.

At the same time, he shows a distinct reiteration regarding certain harmonic patterns and tones; however, the stylistic character of these compositions clearly shows the influence of the instrumental Venetian school of the first half of the 17th century.

Stylus phantasticus delineation departs from the system and classification of musical theory that appears tied to the avant-garde transforming vortex that carries the first half of the 17th century. This theoretical scene sets the environment for Athanasius Kircher’s styleclassifying model, which he structures in his Musurgia Universalis of 1650, where stylus phantasticus is named and defined for the first time.

Six suites are presented in this world premiere recording, Palameta’s fourth solo CD and his first appearance on Audax Records. Intimately familiar with the French style, Palameta was awarded research grants in 2003 and 2006 by the Canadian government to reestablish these works into the oboist’s repertoire; this recording is the fruit of that research.

Hailed by the international press for their “intoxicating” and “ingenious” performances, the pair embarks on an exciting program of virtuosic sonatas for violin and basso continuo. The selection features two world-premiere recordings of works by Graun and Krebs along with other rarely-recorded sonatas attributed to Bach, whose legacy gave rise to a prodigious generation of German violinists.

Complete Works For Piano 1

Goethe-Lieder

This CD opens a series of recordings by Cora Irsen, exploring the huge oeuvre of Marie Jaëll’s piano works. This first part contrasts early works with late compositions created under the influence of Franz Liszt.

Fanny Hensel followed nearly the same musical training as her famous brother Felix Mendelssohn, with whom she fostered an intense relationship during her lifetime. Hensel’s comprehensive vocal oeuvre offers a great deal of potential for further discovery for the audience, as well as for the interpreter!
