Press Quotes
“Filters Temple’s psychedelic muse through a much more muted palette: hazy electronic textures, endlessly-spiraling lyrical loops, occasional forays into extended sections of ambience and noise.” — Pitchfork [7.4] “It’s a risky proposition when a largely unheard artist wraps himself in a new identity that’s clearly evocative of two trendy styles—Panda Bear’s Beach Boy–ish psychedelia and the Afro-pop revived by Vampire Weekend. But Brooklyn’s Luke Temple possesses both an eerily highpitched cry and a facility for his adopted grooves that makes the results far more distinctive than derivative … Magic indeed.” — SPIN “Rarely have a band name and a song title both been so appropriately chosen: In ‘Tunnelvision,’ Luke Temple’s new project Here We Go Magic quickly establishes that nothing is as it seems … engrossing to the point of hypnosis.” — NPR Song of the Day
Selling Points • On tour with Grizzly Bear in Summer 2009 (see page 29 for details). • Vinyl version includes exclusive bonus track “Your Eyes Spit.” • Luke Temple has toured the US extensively, including shows with Sam Prekop, Death Cab For Cutie, Matt Pond PA, and many more. • First three releases received incredible press coverage from Rolling Stone, SPIN, Pitchfork, Stereogum, The Onion, New York Times, and many more. • Radio promotion and full press campaign will be handled by Western Vinyl. • Ads with Pitchfork, Insound, The Wire, and Signal To Noise.

Overview Developed over a two-month period of stream-of-consciousness recording in Brooklyn, Luke Temple’s self-titled debut under his new moniker Here We Go Magic is a remarkable departure from his signature singer-songwriter material. The album was recorded at home using analog synths, a cassette 4-track, and his trusty SM-57 mic, coloring the sound with warmth and creating textures that you just want to wrap yourself in. Many of the songs pulse with infectious Afro-beat and Krautrock-influenced grooves, calling to mind classic albums like Remain in the Light and Graceland, while the instrumental tracks conjure mystical landscapes reminiscent of Popol Vuh’s ambience.

He is one of the only musicians currently applying cutting-edge compositional techniques to jazz. • Previous release on Pi Recordings, On Meaning, appeared on many 2007/2008 year-end lists, including a coveted Critic’s Pick in the New York Times. • Has been named a Rising Star on Alto Saxophone for three consecutive years in DownBeat. • Full press mailing to newspapers, general interest magazines, music critics, jazz & contemporary classical music magazines, and influential blogs. • Full radio servicing to CMJ and JazzWeek stations, and NPR programming. • Targeted web campaign through various relevant sites such as All About Jazz.
Overview Travail, Transformation, and Flow is an important new recording from the Steve Lehman Octet that marks the first fully realized exploration of spectral harmony in the history of recorded jazz. In spectral music, instrumental overtones are blended together to create striking new harmonies, which Lehman has astonishingly adapted as a platform for jazz improvisation. The result is an all-encompassing musical universe that advances a singular conception of rhythm, harmony, and improvisational form.

Press Quotes “[Hugh Cornwell has] been vastly underrated as a solo performer in the past, but even the most lapsed of fans should revel in this CD release.” — The Fly “A very coherent album with rather a timeless quality.” — Record Collector “[Hugh Cornwell] remains a hugely popular and prolific performer, whose songwriting retains its fiery eloquence and whose gigs still crackle with electricity.” — Classic Rock “Hugh has the edge when it comes to emphasizing the eloquence, melodies, and weird time signatures that often underpinned even The Stranglers’ gruffest tracks … but it’s his solo material that really cuts a dash.” — MOJO
Selling Points • Latest studio album form ex-Stranglers front man Hugh Cornwell. • Bonus materials include a DVD of the feature-length documentary Blueprint, which boasts a live performance of the whole album filmed at Toe Rag, and an extensive interview conducted by legendary London broadcaster Robert Elms, filmed at the Tate Gallery. Overview
LP: IHM 52 Price Code: Q (SRP $15.99) LP Jacket; Box Lot 30 AN ALLEGRO-DISTRIBUTED TITLE
Hugh Cornwell is one of the UK’s finest songwriting talents and accomplished live performers, and was the original guitarist, singer, and main songwriter in legendary group The Stranglers, who enjoyed massive success with 10 hit albums and 21 Top 40 singles in the 17-year period that he was in the band. Cornwell has reveled in his musical freedom ever since he stepped offstage after a sold-out Stranglers gig at London’s Alexandra Palace in the summer of 1990 and announced that it was the last time he would be fronting the group. It was time to do something different. To date, Cornwell has released six solo albums: Nosferatu (1979), Wolf (1988), Wired (1993), Guilty (1997), Hi-Fi (2001), and Beyond Elysian Fields (2004). His book The Stranglers: Song By Song was published in November 2001 and gained massive media coverage. And now, his latest studio album is available through Invisible Hands Music in both CD & LP formats! Bonus materials include a DVD of the feature-length documentary Blueprint and an extensive interview conducted by legendary London broadcaster Robert Elms. The release also includes extensive “makingof” footage and is wrapped in a lavish package with photos by Praguebased photographer Phoenix.

Press Quotes “An engaging blend of pop sounds and traditional Eastern European folk melodies.” — Chicago Sun-Times “17 Hippies is a prolific outfit … their polyglot style has evolved to take in dozens of genres, and here they’ve chosen to mix an Eastern European odd-metered rhythm, played on bass and accordion, with a plaintive, gentle reading of the ‘Apache’ melody on the clarinet. It’s very simple, and effectively makes an old classic new again.” — Pitchfork “17 Hippies are ridiculously underrated. They should be in the front rank of European world music artists.” — Charlie Gillet, BBC London “17 Hippies have learned how to fuse sundry musics into one.” — Washington Post

Press Quotes “A compelling meeting of two worlds—one that features the blind singer from Addis Ababa, Jimmy Mohammed, working with avant drummer Han Bennink! Given that Jimmy’s core trio is on board for support, the music is definitely more in the vein of other titles in this Ethiopiques series—and inflected strongly with Mohammed’s wonderfully bluesy vocal tones! Yet Bennink’s percussion work is still a strong force too—and really underscores the tunes with a surprisingly powerful feel at times.” — Dusty Groove “Whereas much of Takkabel! was tangled and angular and complex, recalling Aavikko weirdly enough, with guest drumming from improv legend Han Bennink, this live disc is much more laid back and dark, a very personal sounding and intimate recording, the band spreading out a lush tapestry of sound over which Mohammed weaves his magical moods. His voice is divine and as powerful as it is subtle, distinctive and expressive, soaring and dancing nimbly across impossible melodies.” — Aquarius Records “The Ethiopiques series has done wonders for exposing the wealth of musical styles that emanate from the horn of Africa … But Takkabel! by Mohammed Jimmy Mohammed will be of interest to more folks than just those whose appetites were whetted by the Ethiopiques series: Han Bennink, the legendary Euro-jazz drummer, provides impressive stick work on five of the eight tracks … Bennink manages to sound utterly like himself, and the players accompanying Mohammed’s transcendent singing take plenty of space for themselves.” — Foxy Digitalis
Selling points • A memorable concert, shot in April 2006 at the Banlieues Blues Festival in Paris, features mythical free-jazz drummer Han Bennink. • Bonus features include an interview with Mohammed in which he discusses his blindness, his faith, and his art. • Part of Buda Records’ Ethiosonic DVD series, a branch of the acclaimed Ethiopiques series. • Mohammed has performed with The Ex, Getatchew Mekurya, Silent Block, The Evens, and more. • Playable in all regions. Approx run time: 80 min.
Overview Shot during a memorable concert in April 2006 at the Banlieues Blues Festival in Paris, this film is a tribute to great Ethiopian singer Mohammed Jimmy Mohammed, who passed away in December of the same year. “I filmed the concert of the Mohammed Jimmy Mohammed Trio in April 2006 without planning to turn it into a film. Han Bennink had already played with Jimmy in Addis Ababa, and made a special trip from the US to do this concert with them. An excerpt appeared as part of a special event honoring Ethiopia. In December of that same year, we learned of Jimmy’s death. I decided then that I would complete this film in his memory. It pays homage to a great singer and documents an exceptional concert I wanted to capture.” — Director Stéphane Jourdain

Press Quotes “LA-based producer Nosaj Thing pits gritty electronics against sultry hip-hop undertones—and the two worlds meet with a surprising smoothness. This is one producer worth keeping an eye on.” — XLR8R “Bred in the progressively vibrant LA production terror dome, Nosaj Thing creates chilling ambiance through moody, chest-rattling beats. His live sets are buttery streams of audio bliss, sparking the nodding of heads. A conqueror of beat battles and epic shows all across LA, Nosaj Thing is the new generation of prognostic producer and beastly freestyle beat conductor … Enjoy!” — URB “Guy I’ve really been into lately, played the Obey party at SXSW this past year, is Nosaj Thing (a.k.a. Jason Chung). He is an LA-based electronic artist/producer, known for some excellent remixes of names like Radiohead, Health, and Daedelus, but makes some pretty excellent music in his own right.” — My Old Kentucky Blog

“At the XLR8R party, LA electronic producer Nosaj Thing blows us away to the point where we can talk about little else for the remainder of the [SXSW] festival … Nosaj Thing’s set is as suitably eclectic and as glitchtastic as his Los Angeles peers. Consider us impressed.” — State Magazine
Selling Points • Highly anticipated release from the LA beat scene features 12 new tracks. • Nosaj Thing has received Artist-to-Watch accolades from XLR8R, remixed Daedelus and Flying Lotus, and won Plastic Little/ Turntable Lab’s remix contest featuring MF Doom. • RIYL: Ratatat, DJ Shadow, Boards of Canada. • Full college radio promotion and publicity service by Terrorbird Media.
Overview Drift is the debut full-length album from electronic producer Nosaj Thing. His electronic soundscapes and wild beat tectonics play like vignettes that affect the listener’s mind as deeply as they hit the soul. Without a doubt, Nosaj Thing is among LA’s finest musical modulators. He has received Artist-to-Watch accolades from XLR8R, remixed Daedelus and Flying Lotus, won Plastic Little/Turntable Lab’s remix contest featuring MF Doom, and won LA’s prestigious Project Blowed beat battle. He has shared the stage with the likes of Sixtoo, Architecture In Helsinki, DJ Krush, Z-Trip, Free the Robots, Flying Lotus, D-Styles, Edit, and Daedelus. He’s a staple and a crowd pleaser at LA’s underground hip-hop good time, Low End Theory.
Press Quotes “This piano-pounding Arkansas native combines Jeff Buckley’s spaciness, Fiona Apple’s melodrama, and Freddie Mercury’s exhibitionism.” — SPIN “To put it plainly, Chase Pagan will soon be as well-known as Antony, Rufus, or Devendra, just give him time. His incredible Freddy Mercury-esque, vaudevillian falsetto; his complex yet quirky melodies; and the fantastical, epic leanings of his lyrics and themes are just a few of the reasons to pay heed to this gifted Arkansas artist.” — Sentimentalist “Chase Pagan has a new album coming out … It’s titled Bells & Whistles, and if early indications are accurate (and they probably are), the album is going to be great.” — Buzzgrinder “Chase Pagan is three estrogen pills away from becoming Fiona Apple. In other words, expect dramatic piano and an androgynously moody voice with slightly peeved feminist undertones.” — Pop Sense “Like a whirling ball of energy … the debut LP from singer/songwriter Chase Pagan has a sense of perpetual motion. Over 34 minutes which pass in what seems an instant, Pagan’s work is continuously chaotic, kinetic, and often volatile, no matter whether in the midst of a dramatic crescendo or a quiet fade.” — PopMatters
Selling Points • Featured session performance on Daytrotter in support of Bells & Whistles. • Full online and print press campaign by Girlie Action. • Featured showcase artist at SXSW 2009. • Featured in Scott Irvine’s photography book alongside Interpol, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, and more. • Extensive touring in major markets during 2009. • Ads with CMJ and Magnet.
Overview The songs that Chase Pagan writes are timeless in nature, and seem to come from deep within an old soul trapped in a young man’s body. After hearing his records, one can imagine him locked away in the confines of his mountain home, far from the influences and mediocrity of contemporary pop culture, as he paces the floors with guitar in hand. Pagan’s second album was recorded in Fall 2008 with Chad Copelin at Black Watch Studios. His recent material is more upbeat and uplifting than the brooding material of his 2006 debut, released on the Militia Group label. Pagan is happily content with his station in life, snug between the walls of his mountain abode, and this satisfaction is reflected in his latest work.

Overview Adam Arcuragi’s new 11-song album confirms his importance as one of the best songwriters today. In some ways harkening back to the origins of recorded American folk music, and in other ways continuing the lineage of American independent rock, Arcuragi has positioned himself as a unique and visionary voice. On his second full-length, Arcuragi expands on the dark, sparse style of his previous releases. Backed with layers of vocals and a rotating cast of instrumentation, I Am Become Joy shows the full breadth of his brilliant songwriting style. Overview As the feral child of the Montreal indie music scene, Chocolat forgoes pretension for passion. Their dirty, retro, futuristic ass-shaking mix of psychedelic garage and bluesy folk-rock is the soundtrack for the misadventures of modern day miscreants everywhere. Singer and former one-man band Jimmy Hunt’s Dylan-esque crooning glides over frenzied riffs, serpentine bass lines, greasy organs, and pounding drums spit out by a pedigree of rock stripes fought and earned for by members of Demon’s Claws (In The Red), CPC Gangbangs (Swami Records), and The Cockroaches (Solid Sex Lovie Doll). Chocolat’s genre-crunching debut EP is partly indebted to early Kinks, Brian Jones-era Stones, The Yardbirds, The Seeds, The Pretty Things, and Johnny Cash, as well as the Velvet Underground with a twist of Jacques Dutronc. Plowing through a French yéyé revisionist history of American garage and English freakbeat, their relentless energy nonetheless defies language with their catchy tunes and makes it futile to label them “French pop.” The seven songs deal with familiar rock ‘n’ roll literary topics like sleeping with your best friend’s girl, closet transvestites, drinking off your girlfriend’s pay check, Johnny Depp, groupies, being broke, and of course, watching the one you love grow fat. The band’s refined psycho-sexual boogie, modern psychedelia, classic soul-pop songwriting, and the raw power of their live sets hasn’t gone unrecognized as they’ve played across Canada and in the US alongside the likes of Jay Reatard, The Black Lips, King Khan, Times New Viking, and The Besnard Lakes. The EP is now finally available in the US and Europe, and foreshadows their upcoming full-length due in September 2009. Everyone agrees: Chocolat is better than sex!

Overview Remember when punk rock was still about danger and not about selling shoes? Well, Trigger Effect does. This is no nostalgic sleepwalking trip—these Montreal miscreants are equally committed to incinerating the past and giving the finger to the future. Dare To Ride the Heliocraft, which captures the thunderous experience felt at the band’s live shows, was recorded in two overnight sessions. The continuous eleven-song path of destruction is not for the faint of heart. This is chaos, this is danger, this is punk rock!

Nutsak played its first show in 1996, and though its members have been extremely active in Montreal’s music scene they have never recorded an album under this name until now. Founding members Sam Shalabi (The Shalabi Effect, Land Of Kush) and Chris Burns (American Devices, GlassBurns) are certainly not newcomers to the experimental and improv music scenes. Their live and recorded collaborations include performances with Rhys Chatham, Mike Watts, Damo Suzuki, and an appearance in the Bob Dylan biopic I’m Not There with members of Calexico and My Morning Jacket. Overview At a time when the music establishment continues to overflow with cookie cutter pop, Sun Gods In Exile have arrived to bring some honest-to-god hard rock to the masses. After a brief stint in Cortez, guitarist Anthony D’Agostino hooked up with bassist JL (Ocean). Augmented by Johnny Kennedy on drums and centered around the southernfried vocals of Adam Hitchcock, the boys quickly became a club favorite along the Eastern seaboard, garnering opening slots with Roadsaw, Hackman, and many others. Black Light, White Lines seethes with the same classic rock energy for which the band’s live shows have gained widespread notoriety. The licks are strong, the solos blaze, and the songs leap from the speakers like a rock ‘n’ roll toad in a blender.

Heimataerde Unter den Linden / Vater
Overview Heimataerde has created something utterly unique, blending medieval music with modern hard electro. The out-of-print EP Unter den Linden, which focused on Western European influences, put the band on the map with an intoxicating combination of divergent styles. The new Vater EP explores the relationship between the Western crusaders and their Middle Eastern counterparts, resulting in absolutely amazing dance tracks—think Dead Can Dance in the 21st century.

Overview From a concert in France, to London, to the hubbub of Cairo, this film uses myriad fragments and scenes to compose a personal, musical portrait of the great songstress of the sands, Natacha Atlas. From one migration to another, a single melancholic reverie is forged between East and West on the trail of a pop rose. Musically and geographically, Natacha Atlas has always been an itinerant. The Anglo-Egyptian singer has spent more than a decade fusing electronic beats with North African and Arabic music, finding links between seemingly disparate musical genres, exploring new sonic settings, and working with a wealth of like-minded collaborators from across the world. The resulting body of work is both a triumph of true multiculturalism and a testament to the richness and accessibility of Arabic culture. It is an oeuvre unlike any other.

HOPE FREAKS
Press Quotes “It can be hard to stand out among the hundreds of bands that play the annual CMJ festival, so the hallucinogenic noise-smiths in PRE left it ALL on the floor!” — SPIN “Epic Fits is more fun than any number of last year’s punk releases. If PRE have a trademark, it’s that they’ll derail anything moving.” — Pitchfork
Selling Points • Produced by Steve Albini (Nirvana, Shellac). • Mastered by Weasel Walter (XBXRX, Lake Of Dracula). • Have toured extensively alongside The Gossip, HEALTH, Mika Miko, The Mae Shi, and more. • Extensive press promotion by Blue Ghost Publicity. • Full radio promotion by AAM. • Ads with Skyscraper, The Wire, Signal To Noise, and more. • Viral marketing campaign includes a new video by director Carlos Perez.
PRE Hope Freaks
Overview The second album from London’s new school, no-wave naughties PRE. Recorded in Chicago with Steve Albini at Electrical Audio and mastered by Weasel Walter in San Francisco, Hope Freaks is a powervault up from the acclaimed newborn gnarl of their debut, Epic Fits. Hope Freaks weighs in at a lean 20 minutes but every punch is packed, and with a master at the faders, you will feel the devil in all its detail. Each unhinged swing never fails to connect.

nail welcomes ENGINE STUDIOS to its roster! Engine Studios, located in Brooklyn, releases avant jazz in 100% recycled hand-letterpressed packaging. Bringing forward the rhythmic foundation of bass and drums, Engine Studios recordings present ensemble playing with a strong commitment to the organic power and beauty of acoustic instruments. Engine Studios comes to NAIL via ESP-Disk’.
Press Quotes “Anderson’s playing, which comprises a blend of bluesy, postbop licks and angular, improvised runs, is reminiscent of John Coltrane, Archie Shepp, and fellow AACM-er Anthony Braxton’s off-kilter, searching sounds of the 1960s that extended Charlie Parker’s vocabulary. But Anderson’s music, rather than mimicking the style of those jazz giants, embodies their challenging, probing philosophy of going further, of creating anew while adhering to a distinct harmonic tradition.” — All About Jazz “He doesn’t look 80, and he sure doesn’t sound it. Listen to Chicago jazz master Fred Anderson play his horn—his tone as big as all outdoors, his ideas tumbling one atop another—and it’s clear that, musically at least, he maintains the vigor of youth (as well as the lung power).” — Chicago Tribune

“A tenor saxophonist whose huge tone (a throwback to the great players of the 1950s, including Gene Ammons, Sonny Rollins, and Coleman Hawkins) contrasts with his very adventurous style, Fred Anderson has been a true original throughout his career … An unsung giant, Fred Anderson has finally been receiving long overdue recognition during the past decade.” — JazzTimes
Selling Points • Previous albums on Thrill Jockey (Tortoise, The Sea & Cake). • Anderson was one of the founders of the AACM, and is still an important member of the collective. • Has collaborated with Ken Vandermark, Hamid Drake, and more. • Owner of Chicago’s Velvet Lounge, through which he has brought numerous young musicians to prominence, including Harrison Bankhead, Hamid Drake, Josh Abrams, Fred Jackson, and more. • Hand-letterpressed; printed on 100% recycled chipboard. • Radio campaign will target college and independent stations. • Review copies submitted to numerous indie/avant publications. • Ads with All About Jazz and The Wire.
Overview Staying in the Game starts off with the 24-minute explosion “Sunday Afternoon,” with Fred Anderson weaving in and around the active rhythm section of Harrison Bankhead and Tim Daisy. The energy starts slow, and then builds to the fire for which Anderson is known. To highlight his melodic prowess in different contexts, “The Elephant and the Bee” duo piece finds Anderson playing off the low-end thunder and high scratches of Bankhead’s bass. “60 Degrees in November” shows the trio at full speed again, followed by a re-working of one of Anderson’s tunes, “Wandering,” done here with a delicate thumb piano intro by Harrison Bankhead, who jumps to the cello for the second half of the song. “Springing Winter” is another duo, this time with Tim Daisy’s drums bubbling up from beneath Anderson’s sax. The album closer, “Changes and Bodies and Tones,” starts with a Daisy solo followed by a feverish high string bass idea, upon which Anderson drops a majestic blues melody. And they roll out on that vibe, a hot and thoughtful set recorded two days before Barack Obama’s election victory.
Press Quotes “Abbs is a force of nature on the bass and tuba.” — Time Out New York “Abbs is exceptionally tasteful and supportive.” — Chicago Reader “Filled with atmosphere … the music takes advantage of the group’s unusual instrumentation to provide an evocative variety of free chamber jazz events … Mr. Abbs’ bass and tuba contributions are certainly firstrate. Each separate cut creates a contrasting sound universe that holds listener interest … just listen.” — Cadence
Selling Points • Tom Abbs attended the New School’s Jazz and Contemporary Music program, studying with Reggie Workman, Buster Williams, Joe Chambers, Brian Smith, Chico Hamilton, and more. • He has worked with Lawrence “Butch” Morris, Charles Gayle, Daniel Carter, Cooper-Moore, Sabir Mateen, Jemeel Moondoc, Andrew Lamb, and Warren Smith. • Abbs is a member of the collective groups Triptych Myth, Yuganaut, and Transmitting (with Napoleon Maddox and Jane LeCroy). • US & European tours in Summer/Fall 2009. • Press & radio mailing by ESP-Disk’. • Promotion via Last.fm, MySpace, Facebook, and Twitter. • Radio campaign will target college and independent stations. • Review copies submitted to numerous indie/avant publications. • Ads with All About Jazz and The Wire.

Overview In his third outing leading the Frequency Response group, Tom Abbs (Yuganaut, Cooper-Moore’s Triptych Myth, Andrew Lamb Trio) takes you through a mesmerizing mix of free-jazz, groove, third wave, and noise. From the heart-wrenching title track “Lost,” which conjures the spirit of Albert Ayler, to the Afro-rhythms and pentatonic melodies of the title track “Found,” the music flows from one spectrum to another with ease. Harnessing the power of percussionist Chad Taylor (Chicago Underground, Mark Ribot’s Spiritual Unity Band), violinist Jean Cook (Gena Rowlands Band, Ida), and reedman Brian Settles (Tomas Fujiwara & The Hook Up), Abbs’ haunting compositions will pull at your heartstrings and make you want to dance.

• Has worked with Miles Davis, Gil Evans, Aretha Franklin, Nina Simone, Janis Joplin, Muhal Richard Abrams, Anthony Braxton, Charles Mingus, Henry Threadgill, Van Morrison, and more. • Co-founded the Composers Workshop Ensemble, a New Yorkbased jazz ensemble, in 1961. • In the 1970s and 1980s, Smith had a loft called Studio Wis that acted as a performing and recording space for many young New York jazz musicians such as Wadada Leo Smith and Oliver Lake. He continued to work on Broadway into the 1990s, and has performed with a number of classical ensembles. • Hand-letterpressed; printed on 100% recycled chipboard. • Radio campaign will target college and independent stations. • Review copies submitted to numerous indie/avant publications. • Ads with All About Jazz and The Wire.
Overview On Old News Borrowed Blues, Warren Smith gathers the Composer’s Workshop Ensemble to explore his approach to music, which he refers to as “a little bit inside, a little bit outside.” Starting the album out with an energetic big band opener, the band follows up with “Rivers State Suite,” a polyrhythmic multi-segment tone poem inspired by a trip to Nigeria. “The Hungarian Gypsy Song” features a haunting melody on soprano sax with tasteful backup from the rest of the band. After another more traditional big band number, “One More Lick for Harold Vick,” the album closes with the sprawling avant “Free Forms 1–4,” a less structured, open piece with intro bass work, and an over-thetop baritone sax solo followed by solos from other horns and vibes, and a closing poem read by Warren Smith.
Press Quotes “Leary’s rarest LP is also one of his best … Hearing this makes you realize why he was once perceived as ‘the most dangerous man alive.’” — Lysergia

Overview The first-ever reissue of the ESP-Disk’ vinyl edition originally released in 1966! This unadorned spoken word recording of ’60s icon Timothy Leary was recorded at the Millbrook estate just before repeated raids and arrests by G. Gordon Liddy ended his famous residency. Though the album title became a clichéd rallying cry for a whole generation, it was presented to the public for the first time here. In this document, Leary presents his ideas on drugs, current events, and cultural phenomena—with recollections of earlier experiences and experiments—all delivered in a straight-ahead manner somewhat at odds with the subversive content. An absolute must for anyone interested in the 1960s, or countercultural thinking of any era.

Gato Barbieri In Search of the Mystery Genre: Avant Rock Label: ESP-Disk’ CD: ESP 1049 Price Code: P (SRP $15.99) Digipak; Box Lot 30
In Search of the Mystery, Gato Barbieri’s debut album as leader, was recorded March 15, 1967 on the heels of his work on Don Cherry’s famed Blue Note recordings Complete Communion and Symphony for Improvisers. This avant-jazz masterpiece from the Argentine tenor saxophonist shows off his volatile, shrieking sound to full and unrelenting effect, fueled by the twin interweaving strings of cellist Calo Scott and bassist Norris Jones (Sirone), as well as Bobby Kapp’s impressionistic drum splatter. Recorded in a single day, the session exemplifies the spirited energy of the times and remains distinctive and inspiring today.

Cromagnon Cave Rock Genre: Psychedelic Label: ESP-Disk’ CD: ESP 2001 Price Code: P (SRP $15.99) Digipak; Box Lot 30 NOT AVAILABLE IN CANADA
Already commercially successful as tunesmiths for teenyboppers, Austin Grasmere and Brian Elliot approached Bernard Stollman looking to focus their talents on something more original and unrestrained. Stollman asked, “What would be your theme?” and Elliot replied: “Everything is one.” Stollman said, “Go do it.” What followed was Cromagnon’s (Grasmere, Elliot and the Connecticut Tribe) non-linear journey through the subconscious, weaving together bizarre instrumentation and meter with a psychotic blending of musical styles. Bagpipes, pounding percussion, blood-curdling yelps, chanting, laughing, and billowing subterranean rumblings create the otherworldly soundscape that is Cave Rock. Heralded as one of the best freak-out records of all time, Cave Rock was ridiculously ahead of its time and brings to mind the savage sound-fuckery of Nurse With Wound and Throbbing Gristle as well as the hallucinations of early Red Krayola.

Overview Brooklyn duo Talibam!’s first ESP-Disk’ release is a narrative earful as warped and wonderful as spicy pasta, fresh grapes, and caramel crunch. The ensemble record joins 2008 Thelonious Monk Jazz Institute winner Jon Irabagon (tenor sax); Peter Evans of Sparks (trumpet); guitarists Chris Forsyth (Peeesseye), Anders Nilson, and Chin Chin’s Jeremy Wilms with Mostly Other People Do The Killing’s Moppa Elliot on upright bass. It is ensemble playing that goes beyond personal choice to capture a mood, and the deep anthropology of the strange beauty of contemporary opposing and debt-maxed-out stimuli.
