Steve Coleman & Five Elements Harvesting Semblances and Affinities
Selling Points
• RIYL: Henry Threadgill, Vijay Iyer, Rudresh Mahanthappa, Greg Osby, Steve Lehman. • One of the most popular musicians in cutting-edge jazz, with a 25-year career as a bandleader. • It has been ten years since the last Coleman release has been widely available in the US. • Coleman has had a profound impact on the modern jazz scene: musicians such as Vijay Iyer, Rudresh Mahanthappa, Steve Lehman, and Miguel Zenon have all been directly influenced by his music. • Features the astounding vocals of Jen Shyu, whose rhythmic incisiveness, clarity of tone, and pitch-perfect voicing are pushing the possibilities of jazz vocals into new territory. • Full press mailing to newspapers, general interest magazines, music critics, jazz and contemporary classical music magazines, and influential blogs. • Full radio servicing to CMJ and JazzWeek panel jazz stations, and NPR programming. • Targeted online campaign through various relevant sites such as All About Jazz.
Overview
Harvesting Semblances and Affinities heralds alto saxophonist/composer Steve Coleman’s return to recording. His releases over the last nine years have been on hard-to-find European labels, hardly befitting one of the most important figures in American music of the last 25 years. The release features his band Five Elements, many of whom have worked with Coleman for years, as well as the astonishing vocals of Jen Shyu. Completely defying the traditional role of jazz singing, Shyu’s voice is treated as another horn, getting right into the mix with incredible incisiveness and articulation.
Press Quotes
“This kind of intelligent work falls outside any easy definition, and for that sort of bravery, and his own increasing improvisational power as a saxophonist, he deserves respect.” — New York Times

In the rich, varied, and bizarre history of African music, the tragedy of the Ethiopian pop recording industry stands alone. But for the past several years, Buda Records has brought us the Ethiopiques series, showcasing the immense scope of the golden age of Ethiopian music—lovingly assembled, remastered, and fully annotated. The swinging Addis of the 1960s and early 1970s (before the dreadful Derg’s Stalinistmilitary glaciations) was a period of intense experimentation that encompassed the traditional repertoire. Whether Oromo or Amhara, all of the greatest voices of the time took part with intense creative fervor, as can be heard on this 25th installment in the Ethiopiques collection.

Overview
Makaras Pen walks the line between shoegaze and indie rock with a strong dynamic of crushing guitars and delicate female vocals. Doug White—founder, guitarist, and songwriter from Projekt’s now-disbanded Tearwave—gathers a new group of fantastic musicians to continue the sonic journey he began just a few years ago. Building on Tearwave’s sound, and shoegaze elements made popular in the late ’80s and early ’90s by bands like Lush, Slowdive, and the Cocteau Twins, Makaras Pen adds the twists and turns of an aggressive indie rock band to create an electric, intense, and startlingly fresh new perspective on these genres.

On their self-titled debut, Makaras Pen crafts 11 songs with creative heartfelt lyrics and passionate vocals from Emma Willis, walls of wailing guitars from Doug White and Jon Nemi, lush melodic bass lines from Val Hill, and textured driving drums from Dennis Caswell. Jeff Kandefer, from Clairecords’ dream pop/shoegaze band The Daysleepers, provides guest vocals on “Envy and Lust.” Doug White recorded and produced all of The Daysleepers’ CDs, so it was a natural fit to incorporate Kandefer’s distinct, instantly recognizable vocals into Makaras Pen’s music.

PIERRE DE GAILLANDE SINGS GEORGES BRASSENS Selling Points
• RIYL: Georges Brassens, Leonard Cohen, Nick Cave, Serge Gainsbourg. • First ever release of English versions of songs by legendary French anarchist poet Georges Brassens. • Digipak with 24-page booklet containing original artwork, all lyrics, and an essay by Pierre de Gaillande. • French singer Keren Ann sings on two of the songs. • PR by Blake Zidell (Charlotte Gainsbourg, Manu Chao). • Radio campaign targeting public and college radio. • Press campaign aimed at rock and literary audiences.
Overview
From the 1950s through the late ’70s, Georges Brassens redefined French chanson. He was an anarchist bard whose songs were sometimes raunchy, sometimes polemic, often poignant, and always steeped in classic French poetry. His songs, unlike those of Jacques Brel or Serge Gainsbourg, never became known outside of France, mostly because of the language barrier. Now, Franco-American singer and composer Pierre de Gaillande has taken on the impossible task of translating Brassens’ songbook, to astonishing results. He has stuck to the rhyming scheme and verse length of the original songs, thus matching the melodies perfectly. He has re-arranged the music with a cinematic sensibility, using a combination of guitars, clarinets, lap steel, and charango. The best way to describe the record is to compare it to the perfect film adaptation of a literary classic sung by the offspring of Nick Cave and Leonard Cohen.

In 1994, East Coast rockers Godspeed were taken from their South Jersey basement and thrust into Electric Lady Studios to record their Atlantic Records debut, Ride. Featuring future Solace members Tommy Southard and Rob Hultz, Godspeed’s major-label run included a cover of “Sabbath Bloody Sabbath” for Nativity In Black: A Tribute To Black Sabbath, which featured none other than Iron Maiden’s Bruce Dickinson on lead vocals. Godspeed dissolved after just one album, but following stints as lead guitarist for Sugartooth and Slap Rocket, Tommy reignited the band in 1996 with Rob and former Glueneck singer Jason, naming the revamped outfit Solace. Nine years and five albums since their formation, Solace has proven impervious to the ravages of time, and worthy of the respect and praise they’ve received for their passionate motivation, energy, and raw talent. Clearly, there is no end in sight to their exquisite reign of terror.

Wonderful, the fourth studio album from Circle Jerks, still reigns as one of the band’s most popular records. Veering in a more mid-tempo direction, the album was a change of pace from the band’s first records, which had a more hardcore punk rock sound. New members Zander Schloss and Keith Clark were added to the fold, making their debut as a hard-hitting rhythm section. The Jerks’ trademark sense of humor is still on display, as witnessed by one of the record’s most popular tracks, “American Heavy Metal Weekend.” But the record also contains hard-hitting commentary topical in the ’80s, like “Making the Bombs” and “Killing for Jesus.”

Overview
Over a series of remarkable concept albums, the Luxembourg band Rome has developed a totally unique “poetry of longing” that gives expression to a comprehensive feeling of modern forlornness. The protagonists of this music are the banished, hunted, despised, and misunderstood—firmly in the tradition of Jerome Reuter’s declared heroes Jacques Brel, Léo Ferré, Tom Waits, and Nick Cave. Nos Chants Perdus is inspired by world literature, and the observant listener will be able to detect references to—and quotations from—Albert Camus, Marcel Proust, Jean-Paul Sartre, and Jean Genet.

The fooling about has finished—now it’s serious! Santa Hates You pins you to the mat with the power of Crucifix Powerbomb: loud, threatening, danceable, passionate, and brutish. For the title of their new album, Peter Spilles (Project Pitchfork) and Jinxy have chosen nothing less than the name of a wrestling move and hardly any description could be more fitting for the dark, apocalyptic, aggressive, and seductive music that presents itself on this disc. Stomping beats, driving sequencers, apocalyptic sounds, and aggressive vocals all blend into a veritable inferno of condensed strength. Let’s get ready to rumble!

C-Lekktor’s first album, The Silence Progression, was an impressive calling card for the band. Fans of harsh electro embraced the Mexican trio with passion and declared them the rightful heirs to electro gods Hocico. But C-Lekktor is not content to rest on its laurels—rather, the band is cementing the impression with their new 10-track EP Tendencias Suicidas. Fast, furious, and catchy as fuck, Tendencias Suicidas features hard electro, technoid 303 riffs, and distorted vocals that pitch into a frenzy that would make Amazonian piranhas green with envy. Produced by X-Fusion; featuring remixes by Decoded Feedback, FGFC820, and Alien Vampires.

In a mere five years, Edge of Dawn has become a well-loved band in the electronic, industrial, and goth genres. Their music is a combination of elements from futurepop to synthpop, and everything in between. For 2010, the band is poised to release their newest opus, Anything That Gets You Through The Night. Vocalist Frank M. Spinath explains, “The title purposefully leaves room for your imagination. The central theme of the album is ‘survival,’ but in many different ways and under different circumstances such as pressure, danger, or lust. Everything is allowed, if it serves the purpose of surviving the night.” Anything That Gets You Through The Night is a thrill ride from start to finish with its persuasive bass lines and meaningful lyrics. When it’s all said and done, what gets you through the night?

Overview
Already an institution in their scene, the Munich-based Eisbrecher has only known one direction: steadily climbing up. After several sold-out and nearly sold-out concerts—great shows at festivals such as Novarock, WGT, Amphi, Zita Rock, Castle Rock, Wacken Rocks, Unheilig & Friends, and many more—the band has now declared war on the Eiszeit. Singer Alexx Wesselsky made it clear that they are going deep with the new album—after a hard, nerve-wracking production phase, during which producer/guitarist Noel Pix and Alexx re-invented the band’s typical sound, they are ready to show the world what Eisbrecher can do to the Eiszeit.

Mind.In.A.Box’s newest album, R.E.T.R.O., took a slightly different approach to songwriting than their past three albums. An homage to the era of the Commodore 64 and 1980s video games, the album included a few cover versions of cult classics, all done in MIAB’s signature style. Joe Preston’s resume reads like the track listing for the ultimate sludge metal compilation. In the early ’90s, he was a member of drone metal pioneers Earth, a band he left to join the Melvins. In more recent times he’s recorded with Sunn 0))), collaborated with ex-members of Karp in The Whip, and toured with High On Fire. After being on the road with High On Fire for almost two years, he joined Harvey Milk. Thrones is his solo project in the truest sense of the term: for most recordings, Preston is the only performer. Live, Thrones is a towering inferno of doom-metal, with Preston usually helming a double neck bass, a triggered drum machine, and a shelf of pedals by which synths, vocal effects, and multi-tracked guitar/bass lines emit. This 7” was initially scheduled for release a few years ago, but never materialized until now!

A special limited picture disc edition of the previously released Totem One CD/LP (May 2009)! Totem One marks an evolution from the band’s first record, Visible Sign of the Invisible Order (Abduction Records, 2005). Like a reverse dark side of the new age sound, on the Totem series MMOB perform ritualistic electric excursions into the outer and inner reaches. Relying more on the electric power of psyched guitars, analog synth chants, and exotic heavy percussion, Totem One echoes with the delusions of a West Coast death cult. Outer-spaced gamelan, dusty fuzz rock from celestial deserts, meditations of a deranged Krishna gathering, and the blurry acoustic guitar majesty of the Cascade Mountains all reveal themselves here in epic form.

Year of No Light is a group that takes their influences and expands them into a sound and feeling they can be proud to call their own. Take the almost religious radiance of Jesu and the cinematic atmosphere of Envy, add the backbone of thick and sludgy riffing à la early Pelican or Capricorns, throw in a dash of the experimental ambient elements of Rosetta and Overmars and the transcendently poetic dual-guitar harmonies of Impure Wilhelmina and Mouth of the Architect, and you have the recipe for something truly special.

Hailing from the Los Angeles underground of the 1980s, Savage Republic forged an astonishing reputation with their legendary performances. Their brand of ritualistically tribal exhibitions blurred the boundaries of post-punk and industrial music. Their music incorporates minimalist bass rumbles, exotic and/or militaristic drumming, Arabic melodies, primal chants, and even a bit of surf guitar. Now, A Silent Place is honored to release a limited vinyl 7” single with two amazing exclusive tracks recorded expressly for this release after the 1983 album release on Neurot Recordings! Both tracks feature SR’s distinguishing elements: tribal drumming, hypnotic and raga-like guitar lines with pulsating bass, and post-punk and industrial music with an exotic atmosphere.

Better known as purveyors of quirky, semi-sleazy avant pop gems on their Sub Pop albums, Jennifer Gentle and their leader Marco Fasolo have also issued a series of weirder releases (mostly through Italian label A Silent Place) that run the gamut from out-there psychedelic rock to “crunching and hefty slabs of tripped out musique concrète worthy of Joji Yuasa, Kunihara Akayima, or one of their equivalent early ’60s greats,” as Julian Cope eloquently put it. Concentric is the last of these, and is also their bleakest, most uncompromising, and best “experimental” album to date.

Overview
In Offret is the second Echran full length after the acclaimed self-titled debut (released by the Italian SmallVoices label in 2005). Echran is the electronic project of Davide Del Col and Fabio Volpi, who has worked over the last few years with the Milanese audio/video collective Otolab. Starting in 2003, the project joins two different kinds of experiences: one is gloomy and ambient, the other is noise-based with a psychedelic attitude. Echran’s dark electronic soundscapes are not easy to pigeonhole—there’s a constant metronome-like pulse that could be compared to Pan Sonic or some Basic Channel-inspired minimal techno, but at the same time it’s not really ambient or droning. French lyrics give the record an elegant touch of soft velvet atmosphere.

Yawling Night Songs is the first album from the Italian collective Slumberwood who, after a long apprenticeship in the deepest crannies of the Italian underground, finally took some time to record this LP, now released for public consumption by the mighty A Silent Place label. Drawing inspiration from artists as diverse as Werner Herzog, Coil, Big Star, and This Heat, Slumberwood came to life years ago as a techno-industrial outfit before morphing into a completely different kind of beast. From laptops to treetops, Slumberwood slowly developed their own musical language, brewing a weird amalgamation of sounds that immediately set them apart from the sleepy Italian music scene. Recorded and produced by Jennifer Gentle’s Marco Fasolo in his own Ectoplasmic Studio, Yawling Night Songs is the best introduction possible to their Technicolor musical micro-cosmos.

Overview
Over the past 24 years, Front Line Assembly has become heralded as one of the godfathers of industrial music. Their 1992 album Tactical Neural Implant is still considered the best of the best in the genre. Throughout the years the band has seen many line-up changes, but Bill Leeb remains the constant. Four years ago, FLA released Artificial Soldier, which many fans named one of the band’s top five albums. For 2010, they have returned with the brand new album Improvised. Electronic. Device. The new songs demonstrate that FLA has not lost its edge over the past two and a half decades—and as if Front Line Assembly’s legacy and namesake alone weren’t enough, Al Jourgensen from Ministry contributes vocals to “Stupidity.”

A Kiss Could Be Deadly burst onto the music scene in 2007. They not only signed their first record deal with Metropolis Records, but also garnered a bevy of media attention from Alternative Press, URB, Racket, MySpace, and many more. Their 2008 self-titled debut was an underground success with its fusion of punk, new wave, and electro. Since its release, all has been quiet in the AKCBD camp. Now, two years later, the band has finally re-emerged with the Farewell EP. Featuring two brand new songs, a cover of the Berlin hit “Metro,” and three remixes of songs off the debut, Farewell could be the band’s final curtain call.

To save you a short trip to Google, “parrhesia” means “to speak everything” and, by extension, “to speak freely,” “to speak boldly,” or “boldness.” Without getting bogged down in intellectual scaffolding, what Stephen Haynes, Joe Morris, and Warren Smith give you on Parrhesia is “the other shit.” And you may ask yourself “just what is the other shit, and who the hell markets music this way?” When you hear Haynes’ trumpet speaking in tongues while Morris finger-taps African rhythms on his detuned guitar on the tune “Invocation,” you’re not listening to a typical free jazz session. When Smith recites poetry about America being the best place for him to live while he talks about black lives being destroyed by drugs AND pokes fun at Twitter, you’re not in the jazz equivalent of Kansas anymore. We don’t claim Parrhesia is bold and different in order to sell records or to say that this music is superior to other music. Abundant with melody, space, and rhythm, Haynes’ debut as a leader is a singular experience that resonates with the continuum of tradition.

Overview
In 1966 Bernard Stollman sent Sun Ra and his Arkestra, along with audio engineer David B. Jones, on a tour of five New York colleges. When they returned, just 39 minutes of music were chosen to be released as the original ESP album titled, Nothing Is... Forty-four years later, after extensive research, producer and Sun Ra archivist Michael D. Anderson has pieced together the missing parts of the infamous New York College Tour. Recorded on May 18, 1966 at St. Lawrence University, this illuminating document represents the full 70-minute set including an introduction by ESP alum Burton Greene. In addition, Anderson has uncovered a partial second set from the same evening and some rare rehearsal footage recorded during a sound check before the concert. With over 90 minutes of additional material, this two-disc set allows a close-up look at the band’s repertoire and sound over an entire evening, including the rarely performed “State Street” and alternate versions of “Theme of The Stargazers” and “The Second Stop Is Jupiter.” Remasted from the original tapes and presented in superb quality, College Tour Vol. 1 is a vivid snapshot of the mid-sixties Ra and his intergalactic band.

Following up their critically acclaimed 2008 release, Stephane Furic Leibovici and Chris Cheek return for this second volume, produced by Jim Black and featuring the alto saxophone giant Lee Konitz. An achievement in balance and taste, the resulting music is so thoughtful, intent, and vibrant that it need not be forced upon you. The music unfolds for the listener in the subtlest of ways, as if the composer is challenging our very notion of what will come next. Like a meditation on color and space, you begin to let go of your assumptions and allow the harmonies and structures to wash over you. The interaction of Konitz with his bandmates is a delicate dance of lyrical brilliance. Criss-crossing saxophones gliding through Furic’s intense and wide-open bass work, while his compositions fuel extended interplay as the musicians seem to bounce from one musical theme to the next. This music is the epitome of finesse—effortless and deep at the same time.
Press Quotes
“Everything about this extraordinary album, Jugendstil, is deliberate and attains its own level of perfection.” — Raul d’Gama Rose “Double-bassist Stephane Furic Leibovici avers that he likes to be gentle with sounds and to listen to the inside of them. He is true to this philosophy on Jugendstil, where he finds solace in the quiet and the meditative; getting inspiration from classical and chamber music and using them to the full in his writing.” — Jerry D’souza

Overview
Before his career-defining records on Arista/Novus in the ’80s and ’90s, jazz and fusion guitarist Michael Gregory Jackson recorded his debut for ESP-Disk’. The sessions, recorded in New York, Connecticut, and Los Angeles in the summer of 1976, are wildly meditative and personify the laid-back seventies vibe. A trio of soft, lilting melodies set the mood: David Murray on tenor sax, Oliver Lake on flute, and the album’s leader, Michael Gregory Jackson, on acoustic guitar. The unfolding stream of ideas make these improvisations vital today: arrhythmic strumming, an enchanted R&B vocal from Jackson, avant percussive clatter, processed electric guitar, and fiery horn lines over timpani and flute. Composer and trumpeter Wadada Leo Smith, cited as a major influence by Jackson himself, is featured on the album.

Bitchin’ Bajas is the solo project of Cave’s Cooper Crane. Cooper’s skillful use of melody within his elastic electronic tones is matched by his ability to mix it all (much like he does with Cave) so that there’s a lot of sound but even more space and separation between the sounds. Through some sort of cosmic serendipity, Important has ended up releasing this at the same time as J.D. Emmanuel’s classic Wizards LP from 1981. There are some interesting parallels between Tones & Zones and Wizards. Both artists have a firm grasp of sound without wading too deeply into the blissful waters of new age melody. Both used an organ and a similar assortment of analog synths, and both used the same Tascam reel-to-reel tape machine for their recordings. Though nearly 30 years separate them, they’re both generously offering you the opportunity to dive deeply into their own private Tones & Zones. Enjoy.

With so much being made of current practitioners of the Kosmiche/New Age vibe, here’s your opportunity to hear an original without having to pay too much in the process. Original copies hardly ever surface, and even the 2007 repress (which sounded quite thin) commands quite a fee on internet auction sites. This straight analog pressing sounds as close to the original master tapes as you can get.

Overview
The title Ex Patris (“from the fathers”) plays on the idiomatic baroque lute compositions presented here, which emulate the classical repertoire. The four compositions on Ex Patris form a circular narrative of interlocking repetitive melodic series, kicking off with the pro-apocalyptic track “The Day Is Coming.” “Amor Fati” channels a deep interest in both love for religion and religious belief in love. “Son of Dawn” consists of mirrored lute harmonics that serve as an intro to the 13-minute elegiac “After The Fire Has Devoured All It Will Consume Itself.” The piece builds and releases tension, with layer upon layer of ecstatic melody. At the end even the work itself gets devoured but it remains eternal, with no potential beginning and without end.

• Army Navy’s cover of “Right Back Where We Started From” is being used exclusively on all advertising for the new Shrek movie, the fourth in the wildly popular DreamWorks franchise. The trailer is running before screenings of Avatar. • Army Navy has SoundScanned nearly 6,000 copies of their debut since it came out in October 2008. The band received a great deal of attention due to their exposure on the film soundtrack for Nick & Nora’s Infinite Playlist. • Features drumming by legendary Pete Thomas of Elvis Costello & The Attractions. • First album release from Justin Kennedy (of Pinwheel, co-fronted by Ben Gibbard).
Aided in the studio by producer Adam Lasus, Army Navy eschewed the major label process to release its eponymous debut in the US under its own label, The Fever Zone, in Fall 2008.

Before being crowned an alt country goddess, Neko Case was familiar to Mint fans from her drummin’ thunder in Maow. Here, she stepped out from behind the kit and into the spotlight to release 12 amazing songs that stretch from out ‘n’ out hillbilly stompers to Loretta Lynn-like lovesick ballads. And, she collected a jamboree of indie rock and bluegrass legends as her backing band, including Brian Connelly (Shadowy Men on a Shadowy Planet), Matt Murphy (Superfriendz), Carl Newman (Zumpano, Superconductor, New Pornographers), Rose Melberg (The Softies, Tiger Trap), and Beez (Smugglers), among others.
Press Quotes
“Comparing originals and covers becomes pointless in light of Case’s voice, a soaring Brenda Lee-ish instrument, which makes every song sound like something on a Nashville jukebox circa 1967.” — The Rocket “Her vocal bitch-slap completely demands your attention.
