NAIL @ SXSW GETS NPR LOVE “Of the lesser-known bands I loved but had never seen, TYPHOON was the band that carried me away … I never go to two shows by one band at SXSW, but I saw Typhoon three times … Before Typhoon came on stage at the Ghost Room, this band called SUGAR & GOLD came on. I felt like I was watching MGMT’s little brothers …
Then came my evening surprise: AGENT RIBBONS … what the duo had on stage was fresh lyric writing and fun interplay. It was a sheer joy to watch and hear.”

Selling Points
• RIYL: John Coltrane Quartet, David S. Ware Quartet. • Documents an epic occurrence—David S. Ware, Cooper-Moore, William Parker, and Muhammad Ali, all-together-as-one—and its commercial release is likewise an epic occurrence. • It has been 30 years since young bucks Ware and Cooper-Moore have made music together. • First major new commercial recording of legendary jazz drummer Muhammad Ali in over 35 years. • Service to national press/e-media and college/ non-commercial radio by Improvised Communications. • Ads with NYC Jazz Record and Signal To Noise.
Overview
Planetary Unknown documents an epic occurrence, and its commercial release is the same. David S. Ware and company raise the bar on artistic heights, in all disciplines, once again. In late November 2010, four men arrived at Brooklyn’s Systems Two Studio to record an album. The web of musical, personal, and spiritual connections that brought them together at that particular time and place is a modern jazz parable. Ware and Cooper-Moore shared formative years in Boston, until in 1973 the pull of New York’s jazz scene called them home. Cooper-Moore, Ware, and William Parker were heavyweights of the Downtown loft scene, playing spaces like Ali’s Alley and Studio Rivbea, experiences that equipped Ware and Parker for the extended periods each would spend within the Cecil Taylor Unit, and for their 18 years of artistic refinement and growth inside the David S. Ware Quartet.
Press Quotes
“A group music based upon such a level of intuitive understanding that it can only be described as extraordinary.” — Nic Jones, All About Jazz “Ware’s playing is astonishing, pushing the limits of brain, fingers and equipment, ideas rushing out in a stream of furious, liquid invention, with an almost superhuman precision.” — Daniel Spicer, BBC.com

Muhammad Ali, an early loft regular, had already relocated to Paris with Frank Wright when Cecil Taylor’s Unit came to town in 1976. Ware met Ali on that visit, and both men made a mental note that one day they would play together. Ali’s presence here is a direct blood-link back to the birth of free music in America—it was his brother, the late and much-missed Rashied Ali, who replaced Elvin Jones in the John Coltrane Quartet, and with whom Coltrane recorded Interstellar Space, his catalytic 1967 album of saxophone/percussion duos.

This album was recorded almost exactly two years after their highly acclaimed debut, from which they take their group name. The album flows exactly as it was performed in the studio that day, opening with an exquisite elegy to the late great saxophonist Fred Anderson (who passed away the evening before the recording) and closing with an impeccably mesmerizing cosmic pulse piece. Simply stunning.

From the instant funk classic “Chameleon” to the rare groove sound of “God Make Me Funky,” the Headhunters have redefined modern funk, jazz, and world music as one of the most innovative groups in history. Founded in 1973, the Headhunters recorded their eponymous debut with Herbie Hancock, heralded as the first platinum jazz/fusion project in history. The band went on to produce more seminal records, including Survival of the Fittest, which featured the funk anthem “God Make Me Funky,” one of the most sampled jazz/fusion songs in modern music history. The group is acclaimed for its musical pioneering and innovative concepts.

Improvised quartet music by four acclaimed leaders in free jazz and improvised music. The superior collective interplay on this recording is outmatched only by the individual virtuosity of the four players, each a master voice on his respective instrument. Led by the driving energy and instantly formal playing of Joe Morris on bass, who makes his deepest case yet to be considered one of the great bassists in free music, this amazing group operates as a model of collective interaction creating spontaneously realized pieces that are vivid, grooving, driving, soulful, adventurous, demanding, and richly rewarding. The two lead voices on saxophone, Petr Cancura and Jim Hobbs, each display complete command of their instruments and push them to new and beautiful places that are rooted in the tradition of saxophone music. All of this is held down by the deeply rooted and energetic drive of master drummer Luther Gray, whose playing on this recording is nothing short of heroic.

Brian Settles brings his buttery, powerful sax tone to his Engine Studios debut recording, along with a longstanding playing relationship with the musicians who make up Central Union. The listener hears mindful improvisation from those years of playing together, and the unexpected compositional dynamics of an inside/outside leader. The record combines two sets—one with piano, bass, and drums (tracked at an opera singers’ rehearsal space near Carnegie Hall) and a smaller more rhythmic session with drums, percussion, and sax. Secret Handshake deftly respects the jazz tradition while trying to extend it at the same time.

Dismantled is the product of a musical experiment begun in late 2000 by Gary Zon, who was attempting to create something similar to Front Line Assembly’s sound. As Gary began further sonic construction by drawing influences from television, movies, and music as well as adding vocals into the mix, his project developed a unique and progressive character. The resulting sound was a unique blend of very melodic, yet complex layered electro-industrial merged with trance elements. Dismantled continues in this fashion with new album The War Inside Me. After almost a decade after first signing with Metropolis Records, Dismantled is now a veteran in this industry and his new release is a testament to that fact. This dark, brooding, emotional album shows huge artistic growth while still keeping that edgy, powerful sound that has made the group popular.

For fans of enigmatic American electro-industrial outfit Die Sektor, it has been a long four-year wait since the release of their impressive debut To Be Fed Upon (2006). This eagerly-anticipated follow-up is the first material to feature the return of original member Daniel Gant and new member Edwin Alter, joining forces with core members Scott Denman and Alan Smith. Mastered by world-renowned sound engineer Brian “Big Bass” Gardner, Applied Structure in a Void is a diverse, powerful, and accomplished piece that reflects the years of work spent crafting it. Retaining the epic song structures familiar from To Be Fed Upon, Applied Structure in a Void marks a new maturity in the development of Die Sektor’s sound, placing less emphasis on distorted vocals and EBM beats in favor of thoughtful arrangements that incorporate elements from a wide spectrum of genres.

Overview
Transamorem - Transmortem was premiered on March 9, 1974 at The Kitchen in NYC, where the music programmer at the time was Rhys Chatham. During this period, Transamorem - Transmortem was presented along with other compositions by Eliane Radigue in a linear mode of listening, although the piece had originally been conceived, during its composition, as a sound installation. Of course, both modes of listening are possible, and each works marvelously in its own way. In their original form, Radigue’s works are magnetic tapes. After being played a few times in public, the tape disappears to its case until a release proposal makes it available again through a disc.

Brilliant second album from Nate Wooley’s Seven Storey Mountain project. David Grubbs and Paul Lytton have been replaced by Chris Corsano (Sunburned, Björk, Six Organs) and C. Spencer Yeh (Burning Star Core). “This second recording of Seven Storey Mountain is what I hoped the series would be, a chance to try to find different ways of creating something over the same basic ideas (tape manipulation, long forms with simple written musical directions, an attempt to reach some sort of musical ecstaticism) with different musicians. The first Seven Storey Mountain featured the odd pairing of British improv legend Paul Lytton and avant-rock icon David Grubbs. This second version is played by a trio that has worked together more regularly in different constellations. Yeh works with Corsano in Paul Flaherty’s trio, and with me in a trio with Tall Firs drummer Ryan Sawyer. Corsano has also worked with me in a new trio with saxophone iconoclast Evan Parker. There is a different kind of communication here, more organic and slowly moving over the tape material, which has new elements in it as well. Add to that the beautiful mastering work of Mell Detmer and I think it has turned out as a heavy, dark, and beautifully rich record.” — Nate Wooley, January 2011

Atrium Animae is a hermetic project distinguished by dusky atmospheres and a mesmeric journey into a world of submission and desperation. In the full-length concept album Dies Irae, the recurring theme within the seven tracks is the relationship between Man and God as a symbolic voyage in a silent wasteland made of treachery, defeat, and spiritual hunger—a world where the locked embrace of loss and despair are represented through a reinterpretation of passages taken from religious and pagan texts. Founded in Italy in 2007, Atrium Animae merges the talents of Massimiliano Picconi (keyboards, programming) with Alessia Cicala (Conservatory-trained soprano female vocalist). The music is characterized by a “classical” approach, where the basis of the composition is represented by complex polyphonic vocal parts, and expressive instruments centered around orchestral strings and horns. This becomes a new starting point from Alessia’s previous experiences in the bands Chirleison and Essences. The analysis of the human condition and its relationship with God is made through a separation into two main parts. The first is a representation of the human being with its contradictions and sense of misery. The second is the representation of the “Dies Irae” (Day of Wrath).

Overview
Following their collaboration Stream of Thoughts (Projekt, 2009) Steve Roach and Erik Wøllo reunite to travel The Road Eternal, an electronic/ambient path filled with passion and beauty. Five engaging and expansive rhythmic sequencer-based tracks intersperse with ambient zones and soaring electric guitar textures highlighting sparse, arching thematic lines. Wherein their first collaboration blended a number of shorter passages into a spellbinding whole, The Road Eternal contains five longer compositions that build upon a basis of complex, inventive, and hypnotic sequencer patterns. Intricate and ever-changing rhythmic cycles merge with melodic phrases, creating a compelling groundwork that propels the music forwards. With inspiration drawn in part from classic trance-inducing electronic music with early German roots, the project takes on an interwoven structure draped with harmonic and melodic passages. The route through the music offers different perspectives to hear or “see” on every listen. This is the sound of big skies, open roads, and soaring thoughts, pulling one towards the next destination; reflected in the music with the counterplay of long and meditative rhythmic zones and constellation-like melodic elements filled with space. The tracks transpose two different worlds: Steve’s southwestern desert habitat and Erik’s home base in Norway. The sum of these two environments becomes a hybrid landscape of new discovery.

On the six tracks of their new EP Memorial Gore, the Brooklyn electro-pop four-piece rips through a wide swath of musical territory, from high-energy disco pop to torn-apart country balladry. Each song is a puzzle, with hidden stories about frustrated agoraphobic novelists, traumatic childhood accidents, and drug-addled adult siblings nestled within infectious, catchy-as-hell hook-laden synth-pop songs. Like the best of The Qualia’s work, the songs on Memorial Gore initially show themselves as immensely accessible pop confections, but that first reaction soon gives way to a haunting, surprisingly dark interpretation of the burdens of modern living.

Portland is widely known for its wealth of dark-pop songwriters, and Southerly is one of its very best. Picking up where 2007’s celebrated Storyteller and the Gossip Columnist (Greyday) left off, listeners can hear the natural progression toward what ultimately became Champion: a swooning, eerie, beautiful, morose, and uplifting soundscape that serves as an undeniable reminder of the tension, release, intensity, and intrinsic harmony that all of us experience and celebrate in life. Unlike the previous disc, Champion is a largely instrumental affair, using vocals as additional layers rather than the music’s guide.

Overview
San Francisco Bay Area trio The Trophy Fire is back with a unique brand of heartfelt, hook-driven, and powerful indie rock. Following the release of their first record, A Lifetime in the Middle of the Ocean, and subsequent national tours with Deerhunter and influences/mentors Dredg, comes their second release. Lush string and keyboard pads, big guitars, and sultry harmonies conjure a span of comparisons from Jimmy Eat World to Tears For Fears. From the opening riff of the pulsing “Glow” to the sleepy, beautiful “Bend,” The Trophy Fire have completed their catchiest, most moving, and best recording to date.

Ironweed Your World of Tomorrow
Born from the ashes of the critically acclaimed Greatdayforup, Ironweed is a veritable supergroup of local Albany-area veterans—bands who, for the past decade, have been chipping away at the bloated underbelly of corporate rock. With the demise of GDFU the core group of Mike Vitali & Brendan Slaterbegan began the arduous task of putting a band back together. Turns out it wasn’t that hard. They added the exceptional vocal chords of Jeff Andrews and the considerable skills of Ryan Rapp, and with the recent addition of Dan Dinsmore on drums, Ironweed has managed to make their powerhouse all the more powerful just in time for Your World Tomorrow. In their own words, the new record is heavy … and after 2008’s Indian Ladder that’s saying something. Nine tracks in all, Your World Tomorrow is a sonic assault. Each song just kills it, with thick, sludgy riffs amped up around a thunderous low end and more power than you’d think a song could handle.

Overview
Taken from the blues parlance for the length of a one-year prison sentence, Eleven Twenty-Nine is the new project from Tom Carter and Marc Orleans. Their first self-titled album releases a sound that has done hard time in the blues, from two performers who have constantly pushed the limits of rock guitar. Tom, a latter day Carter Family member via Texas’ Charalambides, has explored a psychedelic brand of guitar instrumentals. Between his band and solo work, he has released some 20 albums, all garnering high praise. Marc, a slick-fingered guitar-slinger, has imprinted the sounds of Helix, Juneau, and Sunburned Hand of Man on legions of fans. Together, they deliver an album steeped in the soul and depth of blues while moving forward into enigmatic free-improv rock.

“Holy Fuck!” exclaimed Mike Watt upon hearing The Nuclears for the first time. Somehow, in a musical climate dominated by formulaic product mass-marketed for disposable consumption and vaguely smug “indie” art that you’re probably not hip enough to get, the act of getting out there and playing rock ‘n’ roll is even more revolutionary now than it was when it ruled the airwaves. The Nuclears weren’t really thinking of that when they started the band back in high school. It was more about girls, and about getting into bars, but ultimately it was just about doing what they love. Originally from DC, the core of the band moved to Brooklyn and finally solidified the lineup with the addition of Nick Vivid, an in-your-face front man with chops reminiscent of Iggy, Ian Hunter, Mick Jagger & Joey Ramone. These kids capture all that is timeless from that first wave of early ’70s glam and punk. The energy, the raw power … the feeling that something BIG is about to happen.

New Jersey’s F-Bombers breathe a fiery breath of new life into a stagnant genre of music. Taking their cues from pioneers of the past, this melodic rock ‘n’ roll three-piece has been doing things their own way since their inception nearly four years ago. They released their label debut in August 2010 in the form of the 7” single Sick Of It All, and as of mid-November 2010 they had sold out of the first pressing (550 copies)! In addition, numerous college and FM stations have added the title track to their regular rotation. With a new year, a new album, more road to burn, and already hitting the studio for their follow-up, the F-Bombers are blazing a trail of pure adrenaline-inspired street rock that follows no rules, and no trends.

Overview
Take a little bit of southern rock, a whole lot of pissed-off punk, and enough country ghosts to fill the “Legends” wall at a Nashville honky-tonk and you’ve got the Flat Tires. With his slicked-back hair and vintage microphone, former pro bull rider Clint Harrison can make you feel as though you stepped into a wrong-side-of-town country bar circa 1960, while his Flat Tires remind you they could have just as easily stepped out of a basement show at CBGB’s 25 years later. Having gained some notoriety for getting banned from a Charlotte venue and branded as “devil-worshippers,” the Flat Tires consistently bring one of the most entertaining live acts on the NC bar scene, and fans of their live show will not be disappointed here.

Hollie Cook was born and bred in West London in a household dominated by music. With the Sex Pistol’s Paul Cook as her dad, music was always around. Family friend and Slits singer Ari Up persuaded Hollie to sing backing vocals for the EP Revenge of the Killer Slits, which she followed by ditching school to join the band on a six-week tour. Hollie was now an official Slit, so when it came to record a new album in LA, Hollie’s vocals, keyboards, and even her song “Cry” were all featured. More collaborations followed: a duet with Jamie T on his Chaka Demus EP, with Ian Brown on The World Is Yours, and most significantly as featured vocalist on Mike Pellanconi/Prince Fatty’s underground reggae hit “Milk and Honey.” The single received airplay across BBC Radio, 6 Music, XFM, KISS, and even ended up on Grey’s Anatomy. Hollie’s passion for reggae singers Janet Kay and Phyllis Dillon, combined with her love of classic ’60s girl groups, formed the basis for her new solo work of self-coined “tropical pop.”

Bunnydrums began as a collaboration between three members of the Boneheads and one member of the Autistics, both part of Philadelphia’s punk rock scene in the late 1970s. Within the next seven years the band explored many different phases of music, resulting in a unique sound. Throughout the early and mid-eighties, Bunnydrums expanded its following, and releases such as Feathers Web, PKD, and On the Surface gained the band a cult following. For a band known to be gloomy and dark, the release of Holy Moly saw the members infuse a more intense, driven sound while keeping the emotional impact of the music and vocals.

Our lives are full of firsts. Our first jobs. Our first apartments. Our first victories and first defeats. Our first loves and first heartbreaks. Each and every day we’re challenged to take risks and try something new. Graham Wright’s debut solo album, Shirts vs Skins, is about those challenges. His first full-length captures the excitement of the moment when you step out on your own and boldly face the future. Following 2008’s The Lakes of Alberta EP, Wright experienced a period of intense creativity in the wake of a big breakup. Instead of dwelling on the past, he chose to plow ahead. He wrote over 60 new songs and embarked on a series of recording sessions with the help of Dean Marino and Jay Sadlowski at Toronto’s Chemical Sound Recording Studio. The resulting album, the first of a planned trilogy, displays all of the skill and trademark charm that Wright brings to his other work: as a host on CBC Radio 3, as a contributor to 2009’s groundbreaking Novels project, and as one of the four great musical minds that make up Tokyo Police Club.

“Fresh off his band’s appearance on Desperate Housewives, Tokyo Police Club keyboardist Graham Wright has unearthed an EP he wrote and recorded last year and promised himself he’d release before the end of 2008. Its title is The Lakes of Alberta, and it’s a low-key acoustic affair that would sound nice on the drive home for the holidays.” — Pitchfork

“Unlike the spiky new wave rock his band is known for, Wright’s solo offering … is a mellow acoustic. With its gentle plucking, banjo leads and hushed vocals, it sounds closer to Iron & Wine, in a good way, than typical Tokyo Police Club fare.” — Exclaim!

Overview
With the original line-up not seen since 1995, D:Ream are set to return with the release of their brand new album, In Memory Of…. With two Top 5 albums and a string of Top 10 singles, including the iconic “Things Can Only Get Better,” the act went their separate ways in 1995. After a chance meeting in 2008, Alan and Peter began working on some new tracks that take their trademark sound to new levels. Incorporating their original electronic influences with live instruments, D:Ream’s new sound is more organic, but still retains the anthemic and uplifting moods that earned the act so much praise in the 1990s.

Three years after their previous release, Form and Fate reaches an entirely new pinnacle in creating thought-provoking instrumental “post rock.” From one listen, you can tell that no shortcuts were taken in the development of this album. The songwriting is creative and intense, drawing you in and forcing your attention. Influences of Mogwai, Russian Circles, Explosions in the Sky, ISIS, and Tristeza are evident, but Form and Fate successfully creates their own unique space in this crowded genre. Every new listen will instill new excitement and emotion, shattering any preconceived expectations of what post-rock should be.
