San Francisco four-piece Vaniish began when singer and guitarist Keven Tecon (ex-Wax Idols, The Soft Moon, Veil Veil Vanish) left his previous bands after his mother’s death in early 2013. Upon returning home, Tecon decided to focus entirely on a new project along with fellow Wax Idols and Veil Veil Vanish member Amy Rosenoff (bass) and SF musicscene luminaries Adam Beck (guitar/keyboards) and Nick Ott (drums). The album Memory Work is both dense and spacious, combining the atmosphere of early 4AD with the psychedelic shoegaze of Creation Records to envelope the listener in a world of eerie soundscapes and surreal lyrics. Guy Blakeslee (The Entrance Band) delivers his first solo album in 10 years! Produced by Chris Coady (Beach House, Yeah Yeah Yeahs), the album Ophelia Slowly takes a step back from the dense rock sound his psychedelic trio is known for, delving into a sparse, spooky dreamscape where drum loops, synthesizers, and the occasional acoustic guitar frame haunting vocals. Recording under his own name for the first time, Blakeslee seems to be clueing us in that his intentions for this project are that it be intimate and vulnerable, and as anyone who caught his recent solo dates opening for Spiritualized or Cat Power will attest, he delivers on that promise. His reworked 2003 version of Skip James’ “I’m So Glad” is heard in the soundtrack for Spike Jonze’s Academy Award®-winning film Her, appearing as the infectious song Scarlett Johansson’s “character” shares with Joaquin Phoenix, confessing she can’t stop listening to it. Hopefully Ophelia Slowly will produce a similar result.

Trio (New Haven) 2013 is legendary composer and saxophonist Anthony Braxton’s first trio recording with two drummers. The group includes Tomas Fujiwara and Tom Rainey, two of New York’s most in-demand drummers. Throughout the course of the four-CD set, the group moves from open improvisation to playing Braxton’s Falling River Music to excerpts from Braxton’s Ghost Trance Music Secondary Compositions. An international multimedia project based around the ideas of improvisational music and the coming together of musicians from different countries and musical backgrounds to create a spontaneous sonic landscape. “Skeylja” is an invented word combining the Frisian word for Terschelling (“Skylge”) and the Icelandic word for island (“Eyjan”). The project started when the Alvaret Ensemble (Greg Haines, Jan & Romke Kleefstra, and Sytze Pruiksma) travelled to Iceland to try to find a shared music language with Icelandic musicians Ingi Garðar Erlendsson, Kira Kira, Borgar Magnason, and Eiríkur Orri Ólafsson.
