OSJAlive

p. 14

St John’s Smith Square is situated in central London, near to Westminster Abbey and the Houses of Parliament. One of London’s most popular classical music venues, the building is a masterpiece of English Baroque architecture that has survived fire, lightning, bomb plots, and the Blitz. Now, the Orchestra of St John’s Smith Square has launched its own record label — osjAlive! The label’s first release is John Lubbock’s critically acclaimed interpretation of Fauré’s Requiem, performed at the venue in April 2013. osjAlive comes to Allegro Classical via Launch Music International Ltd.

Cameo Classics

p. 22–23

Cameo Classics was founded in 1973 by David Kent-Watson, who had built Indigo Sound Studios in Manchester with Bob Auger. Cameo Classics centered around recording unfairly neglected classical music on location, whereas the 24-track Indigo Sound Studios entertained the likes of Marc Bolan, Sad Café, and the Bay City Rollers, to name just a few. Cameo Classics now concentrates on recording the works of neglected British and Jewish German composers. To date, the label has premiered 108 compositions, and new recordings are always in the pipeline. Cameo Classics comes to Allegro Classical via Nimbus/Wyastone.

p. 26

Vlad Records was founded two years ago by Vlad Weverbergh, Flemish clarinetist and founder of chamber music group Terra Nova. The label’s aim is to give unknown music a place in the modern musical landscape, allowing this “new” music to be preserved not just on paper, but as part of our aural heritage as well. Vlad Records comes to Allegro Classical via New Arts International.

On his new Myrios Classics recording, pianist Kirill Gerstein offers an unusual yet logical pairing of Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition and Schumann’s Carnaval, cycles of piano pieces in which the picturesque element was the departure point that fired the composer’s imagination. Soo Park: piano BEETHOVEN: Tempest • Waldstein • Appassionata Although the three sonatas recorded here are among the most frequently performed of Beethoven’s works, it is far rarer to hear them played on a pianoforte of the time. The sonatas were composed during the brief period spanning1801–1806, exactly the same period that saw the arrival of the Jakob Weimes pianoforte used here. By playing these sonatas on the piano that first played them, we feel the composer’s joy in exploiting the pianoforte’s recently acquired capacities, and Beethoven’s transgressive force becomes evident because the instrument is being pushed to its limits... Soo Park was born in Seoul, Korea. She studied piano in France with Catherine Collard and Pierre Reach, and fortepiano with Patrick Cohen in the CNSM de Paris. She was awarded the Premier Prix of fortepiano by the unanimous decision of the jury, before going on to study a post-graduate program with Christophe Coin. She was laureate of the 1998 Early Music Competition of Brugge. Now living in France, she has played with Ensemble Philidor, Véronique Dietschy, and Ensemble XVIII-21.

Lyudmila Malian: violin Sergei Roldugin: cello St. Petersburg Radio & TV Symphony Orchestra Stanislav Gorkovenko: conductor TCHAIKOVSKY: Concerto for violin and orchestra in D major, Op. 35 • Variations on a Rokoko Theme for cello and orchestra, Op. 33 All of the recordings in the St. Petersburg Classics series were made in the late ’90s by Mazur Media in coproduction with Sony Classical; however, with a few exceptions, were never released. All were produced in 24 bit/96 hz High Definition Technology, and then converted into the common CD standard almost without loss. Tchaikovsky wrote only a few works for violin and cello, but his artistic impact in this area is significant. His concerto for violin is the first Russian violin concerto. His dedicatee Leopold Auer refused to accept it because he felt it was unplayable, yet today it has a firm place in the concert halls as a classical masterpiece.

Stolz Quartet

Dutch Masters and Their Inspiration

The Stolz Quartet was created with the passionate conviction that it is possible to present classical music and contemporary music theater in a way that creates a rich and beautiful experience for the listener. Within the strong Dutch musical scene, the Stolz Quartet is at the top of their game concerning technique and musicality. In the words of composer and conductor Oliver Knussen: “Last night I listened with increasing happiness and amazement to the best performance (in every way) of my Cantata that I have heard for years and years. Thank you all SO much. It is such a wonderful feeling to experience that uncanny understanding of what I meant without my presence at rehearsals!”

Goeyvaerts String Trio Kristien Roels: violin Kris Matthynssens: viola Pieter Stas: cello Zsuzsi Tóth: soprano Barnabás Hegyi: countertenor Olivier Berten: tenor PÄRT: Stabat mater • MOODY: Simeron The Goeyvaerts String Trio employs just intonation for the Stabat mater, although equal temperament is the most commonly known and used. Pure intonation is an early form of tuning. Intervals are distributed unevenly but “purely” across the octave. Just intonation sounds calmer, and even a bit more sorrowful, to the contemporary listener. Throughout his Stabat mater, Arvo Pärt alternates beautiful triads with dissonances. The work’s emotional quality is present no matter what intonation is used, but just intonation does give the work a specific “voice.” The Stabat mater is not an icon surrounded by jewels; it is an expression of suffering and solace. This performance of the Stabat mater reveals something that cannot be put into words, and this may explain its intense beauty.

SOMM Recordings Martin Cousin: piano RACHMANINOV: Études-Tableaux, Op. 33 • Études-Tableaux, Op. 39 “He has not only the power to play the massive, orchestrally scaled climaxes, but also the ability to play a beautiful pianissimo, plus the uncanny control — and the musical comprehension — to bring out the ubiquitous inner lines that Rachmaninov calls for. This is the performance of the First Sonata that I have always heard in my head, but never thought I’d actually get to hear with my ears. This guy’s the real deal.” — Fanfare Since winning the Pozzoli International Piano competition, ever-popular young Scottish pianist Martin Cousin has won a just reputation as an ideal interpreter of the Russian Romantics. He has a fearless technique and a palette of extraordinarily beautiful colors that do perfect justice to the music of Rachmaninov. The Études-Tableaux have been in Martin’s repertoire for years, and they were absolutely ripe for recording.

In some instances, only a few examples exist in the world. The chosen repertoire is specifically matched to the instrument, to highlight its special qualities. The first release features a recording of an original Ruckers spinet from 1604. This instrument has miraculously survived to the present day and, after many years of research and preparation, has been restored to a playable state. It was built in Antwerp in the workshop of the brothers Joannes and Andreas Ruckers; the date 1604 can be found among the painted decoration on its soundboard. The original signature has been lost together with the jack rail and rose but, from the style of this painted decoration, we can be sure that it is typical of the early period of the instruments signed by Joannes Ruckers.

Husband-and-wife team clarinetist Jean Johnson and pianist Steven Osborne come together for a recording of Brahms’ popular Clarinet Sonatas, uniquely paired with the rarer ones by Miklós Rózsa in which Johnson steps into the spotlight on her own. Brahms’ appreciation for the clarinet came late in his career — his two Sonatas were the last chamber works he wrote. The Hungarian-born Rózsa, known universally for his Oscar®-winning scores to such movies as Spellbound and Ben-Hur, was equally admired for his classical compositions, which were championed by the likes of Heifetz and Piatigorsky. His two works for solo clarinet spanned 35 years, both written after he’d settled in Hollywood, the latter just two years before his death. Jean Johnson is an avid chamber musician. In addition to performing regularly with her husband Steven Osborne, she has collaborated with leading musicians in the world’s foremost venues, including pianist Barry Douglas at Carnegie Hall and on the “Bridge” contemporary music series at Lincoln Center.

As a violinist admired throughout Europe, and father of the sonata and the concerto grosso, Arcangelo Corelli enjoyed an unparalleled reputation during his lifetime and throughout the entire 18th century, leaving his mark on generations of musicians and composers. Although his music can seem less typically “baroque” to our ears, its relative sobriety and the further refinement of violin-making largely contributed to its dissemination. Like Bach who admired him, Corelli was not an innovator, but he created a deeply personal art through synthesis. At a time when virtuoso singing was prevalent, he provided a model of elegance and balance, even being dubbed “The New Orpheus of Our Times.” The trio sonatas on this recording are dedicated to Corelli’s main Roman patrons; they reflect his personal evolution as well as the refinement of the violin, which was subject to an increasingly apparent emancipation within the orchestra.

This volume focuses largely on works by Margaret Sutherland (1897–1984) and Peggy Glanville-Hicks (1912–1990), names that may be familiar to some Australian music aficionados but seldom reach the ears of the wider listening public. This is a great shame, as they show not only a great affinity to the wider genre of English song, but also track their own distinctive musical path. This is a wonderful introduction to some rarelyheard composers, with full texts and excellent notes by the pianist.

Magid El-Bushra: countertenor Jill Carter: flute Matthew Turner: vibraphone Julia Desbruslais: cello CORP: Lullaby for a Lost Soul (premiere) “An expert choral hand at work.” — Gramophone “An artless quality informed but not stifled by western choral tradition.” — Classic FM HHHHH This latest CD of music by Ronald Corp OBE is an inspired mixture of settings of Francis Booth’s cycle of poems interspersed with Corp’s own arrangements of John Dowland lute songs. Inspired by the starkness and directness of the poetry of his longtime collaborator Booth, Corp has scored the work for countertenor (rising star Magid El-Bushra) with a halo-like accompaniment of vibraphone, flute, and cello. The juxtaposition of these new songs sung by a countertenor, against Dowland’s 17th-century music realized in modern arrangements, is a revelation that sheds new light on the older works, which in turn reverberate through Corp’s songs.

Music of 19th Century Jewish German Composers Vol. 1 Janet Olney: piano BRÜLL: Opus 45 • Opus 51 • Opus 11 • Opus 72 Sadly, nearly all of Brüll’s compositions have lain unheard by the public for over a century. Many will never be heard, as even his great friendship with Brahms could not save him from the anti-Semitism fuelled by Wagner and Liszt during the 19th century. Hitler idolized Wagner, and he ordered that scores of the music of Jewish composers be searched for and burnt. Fortunately for us, many of them were well hidden… CD: CCL 9045 Price Code: J (SRP $9.99) Number of Discs: 1 Jewel Case, Box Lot 25 5% PREORDER DISCOUNT

CD: CCL 9027 Price Code: Q (SRP $15.99) Number of Discs: 1 Jewel Case, Box Lot 25

At the beginning of the 19th century, Richard Wagner accused the Jews of being a harmful element in German culture, arguing that Jewish musicians were only capable of producing music that was shallow and artificial. The music of Jewish composer Ignaz Brüll shows Wagner’s views to be completely unfounded. However, at the time, Wagner’s criticism fuelled the growing anti-Semitism in 19th-century Austria and Germany, and Brüll’s considerable musical output was suppressed during his lifetime. With the rise of Nazi Germany in the 20th century, Brüll’s music was banned from being performed, and his manuscripts were burnt.

Ignaz Brüll was the eldest son of a prosperous Jewish merchant. In 1850, at the age of four, he moved with his parents from the provincial town of Prossnitz in Moravia to Vienna, which henceforth became the center of his life and work. He displayed precocious musical talent and was permitted to study the piano with Julius Epstein, and composition with Johann Rufinatscha. Brüll wrote three orchestral serenades, Op. 36 in E being the second. Salomon Jadassohn is a shamefully neglected composer. He studied at the Leipzig Conservatory, and privately with Liszt at Weimar, but because he was Jewish he could not qualify for the many church jobs as music directors or organists which were usually available to Christian graduates of a conservatory such as Leipzig.

String Quartets

Nuevos Mundos

Gaetano Brunetti wrote quartets during most of the time he served the Spanish monarchy. In January 1770, he became music master to the Prince of Asturias, who later became Charles IV, and started writing professionally for him.

The music on this recording is taken from the Trujillo Codex in Peru, an example of the wealth of music performed on the Iberian Peninsula and in the Americas from the pre-Columbian period to well into the 18th century.
