nail welcomes bladen county records to its roster! Compelling music from underground acts with a focus on Portland, Oregon buzz bands; unearthing timeless music and artists from whence the indie rock was forged.

THE BUILDERS AND THE BUTCHERS THE BUILDERS AND THE BUTCHERS Press Quotes “The Builders and the Butchers initially turned heads with their immersive performance style—employing singing in the round sans mic, recruiting the crowd as back-up vocalists, traipsing off into the street in the middle of the closing song. But shorn of the theatrics, the band’s music easily holds its own. The record traces the course of a traditional Butchers set, from stripped-down crowd-grabbing opener ‘The Night, Pt. 1’ to lovely sing-along gospel closer ‘Find Me in the Air.’ In under a year, the band’s gone from Mississippi Pizza party band to Crystal Ballroom opener, and this album shows why.” — Willamette Week (Best Local Albums of 2007) “A brand of dark folk with intense vocals and an instrumental setup that is all over the map—strings, banjo, washboard, tambourines, mandolin, etc. are in the mix, along with the traditional guitar and drums.” — Cable and Tweed

“Their music harkens back to a time of great wide open western coastal state expansion. There’s more of a gospel/Tom Waits feel to it all, though, and under the dark folk stories, there’s lots of banjo, washboard, and fiddle. It blends to create gothic Americana-folk-rock with a little more ‘umph!’ than your average Decemberists song.” — My Old Kentucky

Selling Points • Arigato pak with original art by Lukas Ketner. • Recorded by Mike Anzalone. • Guest spots by Annalisa Tornfelt of Bearfoot and Adrienne Hatkin of Autopilot. • Recent tour with Sub Pop recording artist Helio Sequence. • Next album to be produced by Chris Funk of The Decemberists. • Publicity by Romo PR. Booking by BigShotTouring. Strategic spots at NoisePop and SXSW.

Overview Alaskan native and fish biologist Ryan Sollee started the Builders as a funeral songwriting project. The resulting album is a Tom Waits-ian, gospel-infused, call-and-response rave-up of despair. Legendary live shows have solidified the group as the best new up & coming band in Portland.

“Liberally grabbing from bluegrass, country, and punk—armed with just about any instrument they came across—this band has accidentally stumbled upon something incredible: a very distinctive and interactive way to create and present music.” — Portland Mercury

• Recorded at Bubble Studios by engineer Chris “Frenchie” Smith, who has worked with Built to Spill, Meat Puppets, ...And You Will Know Us by the Trail of Dead, and more. • North American tour this summer in support of the new album. • RIYL: Godspeed You! Black Emperor, Mono, Mogwai, Explosions in the Sky. • Featured in Rolling Stone as Senior Editor David Fricke’s “surprise find” at SXSW 2006. • Comprehensive new media, print, and radio campaign coordinated by Fanatic Promotion. • Ads with Arthur, The Wire, and Signal to Noise.

Overview Described as “advanced ecstasy” by David Fricke in the pages of Rolling Stone, Austin instrumentalists My Education create sweeping, cinematic music evocative of the high-lonesome expanse of the Texas Hill Country landscape they call home. Formed in 1999 by members of Stars of the Lid, ST37, and Cinders, the band has since played over 300 shows all over the United States alongside like-minded artists Pelican, The Black Angels, Six Organs of Admittance, A Place to Bury Strangers, ISIS, and many others. The band has three full-length albums, several compilation appearances, and multiple singles to their credit, including a must-have 12” vinyl collaboration with avant hip-hop act Dälek released last year. Additionally, My Education have received the remix treatment by Kinski, Pelican, Red Sparowes, and the aforementioned Dälek, and even composed an original score to the F.W. Murnau 1927 silent film Sunrise: A Song of Two Humans, which premiered at the famed Alamo Drafthouse Cinema in March 2007. In short, the band has gotten around. Behind this slow-burning momentum, the band delivers their beautiful fourth full-length Bad Vibrations. Here, My Education’s sonic flights are sharply honed into highly melodic mini-epics. Layers of guitar swell and sway over propulsive rhythms while viola spins yearning melodies ever skyward, sprinkled with delicate color by vibraphone and keyboards. Bookended by ambient passages pillowing heavy-lidded acoustic strumming, languid strings, and lap-steel, Bad Vibrations is the finest summation of My Education’s highly textured and emotive music yet.

“This Austin sextet expands on the arc-riff grandeur of local travelers Explosions in the Sky with John Calelike viola and simple, rising melodies that take you up and out. My surprise find at SXSW this year. My Education are advanced ecstasy.” — David Fricke, Rolling Stone

Press Quotes “With smart lyrics, thoughtful arrangements, lots of hooks, and an early autumn mood, Heaven Is For Easy Girls is a sure winner for lovers of indie pop everywhere.” — Pop Matters

Selling Points • Band has received exposure through US touring with the New Pornographers. • Features Shane Nelken (A.C. Newman, Ronnie Hayward). • Full US college radio service. Full US media mailing. Digital promotions by Toolshed Media.

Overview What began as a recording project for songwriter Shane Nelken (pianist/guitarist for New Pornographer A.C. Newman) has morphed into one of Canada’s most promising super-bands featuring former members of The Beans, Bossanova, and Sparrow, among others. The Awkward Stage toured North America in support of their debut, 2006’s acclaimed Heaven Is For Easy Girls. Garnering heaps of praise along the way, they opened for the New Pornographers as well as ’60s legends The Zombies. Several appearances at CMJ were followed by a show at SXSW, where the Austin Chronicle selected the band as a “Must-See Act.” With the addition of more reflective elements, this disc improves on the infectious pop of Heaven. No sophomore slump here.

Overview Formed in 2002 as your typical band of drunks making noise on the weekends, Iota has evolved into a unique blend of melody and psychedelic bliss. Many shows, demos, and lineup changes later, the band is still shaking walls with a spaced-out brand of rock steeped in blues, coated with vintage psych guitar rock, and rolled in metal for extra flavor. Ranging from high-speed madness to lumbering space jams, Iota’s live shows never disappoint. The band’s first EP was included in SLC Weekly’s Top 50 of 2004, and their second was included in the Top 75 of 2006.

Press quotes “If I may be so bold, records like [this] are the reason I play music for strangers on the radio, and write about it for strangers on the internet. It’s an utter mindfuck that doesn’t defer to any ‘scene,’ any genre, or even any ‘rules’ about song structure. Most of the songs on the album are under two-and-a-half minutes long, with many being way under. Some of the shortest tracks are no more than bits of noise, fuzz, or pretty little instrumental flourishes. These segues add to the ‘mixtape’ feel of the album, a feeling supported even more by the way many songs are comprised of multiple suits, sometimes stylistically disparate from one another, or broken up by injections of noise or tiny snippets of completely different sounding music.” — Blogarhythms “This is what I believe they call whacked-out shit—not terribly surprising, given the sheer number of players … and the pedigrees involved (some of the players here include present or former members of bands like White Mice, Xerxes, USAISAMONSTER, Rare Youth, and the What Cheer? Brigade) … the 19 songs here sample freely from just about every genre imaginable (but most often offbeat pop and fractured jazz), often switching gears into wildly disparate genres within any given song. Despite the Providence connection, this is not the kind of wildly hyperactive spazzmusic commonly associated with that area; there are moments of that kind of wildness, yes, but mostly the songs are dominated more by catchy, poplike guitars and jazzy passages.” — One True Dead Angel

Selling Points • Has completed one major US tour in the past year; plans to tour again in Spring/Summer 2008. • Features members of USAISAMONSTER, Throne of Blood, Urdog, Black Forest/Black Sea, and Barnacled. • Service to radio and media by Corleone Records. • Ads with Big Takeover, Signal to Noise, Give Me Back, and CMJ.

Overview Jeremy Harris is ten epic bands trapped in one man’s body. This is his first proper CD release. On this album, Harris put down his broken guitar and picked up sheet music, taking the time to compose an album that more skilled musicians could perform on instruments like flute, cello, upright bass, and piano. This has allowed him the space needed to destroy music as only Bobby Conn and Joe Preston could. Jeremy Harris has been putting on the mask of Lazy Magnet for over a decade. He has been slaying the proverbial dragon we call music with his electronic saber, which takes the shape of 7”s, cassettes, and many US tours. He has dominated the country with his epic, ever-changing live persona, be it with charming acoustic sets, jarring electronic warfare, fullfledged Judas Priest-in-the-red riffers, or just plain fucking weird mayhem. Harris has also been a member of other epic groups such as the original lineup of USAISAMONSTER, Throne of Blood, Buddy Ship, and infamous noise rock terrors Dynasty. Despite this notable company, he remains a solo visionary with a mission to outdo and destroy—or at the very least pay homage to—the likes of Karp, Thrones, Flipper, Ween, and Anton Levay!

Overview With accessibility and sincerity as its goals, The Delicious crafts strangely accessible indie-art-pop in a complex, honest, light-hearted, and ridiculously well equipped fashion. A self-styled slice of life from Hoosier singer-songwriter David Brant, with backing arrangements by fraternal journeymen Vollmar. The debut album by Bronze Float is affecting and addicting, in the spirit of K Records’ finer moments. With arrangements inspired by those found on Leonard Cohen’s first albums, most tracks feature the bass as a strong rhythm behind a soft nylon-stringed guitar sound. Occasionally the title, Notice, becomes a warning of heavy objects dangling from a tree just above the listener’s head. Though this object is dangerous, the fact that the tree is falling toward you seems much more urgent. Dust in a corner of the room is soon cast away. What, if anything, can it offer? Perhaps just noticing the dust is an interesting awareness. The soft-spoken words and sounds of Notice are an attempt to describe this.

Overview Junior Achiever frontman Gene Champagne began playing the drums when he was only eleven. He co-founded The Killjoys, who won a Juno Award, toured Canada and the US extensively, and recorded three records for Warner Music before disbanding. Joining Champagne in Junior Achiever is like-minded musician Dave Fritz, formerly of British pop-punksters Wact. Holding down the rhythm section are bassist/vocalist Steve Scott and drummer Jeremy Knowles, a team that has played together often in the past. All the Little Letdowns is a bittersweet tale of lost love, disillusionment, and regret; a summer album that reflects the sparkle of the grass and the warmth of the sun, all with a wry sense of humor and an honest longing for something more.

MARC RIBOT’S CERAMIC DOG Press Quotes

PARTY INTELLECTUALS

“Marc Ribot’s new power trio, filled out by the remarkable versatile rhythm team of bassist Shahzad Ismaily and drummer Ches Smith, is his rawest band in ages.” — Time Out New York

Selling Points • Marc Ribot is a widely recognized original on the guitar, with wide fan support across multiple genres. Ceramic Dog is his first project that will appeal to his entire diverse fan base. • Ribot is a first-call guitarist for T-Bone Burnett, Tom Waits, and John Zorn. Recently, he was featured guitarist on the Grammywinning Robert Plant & Alison Krauss collaboration Raising Sand. • Ribot is also well known for his work on a variety of film scores including Walk the Line, The Departed, and Everything Is Illuminated. • Pi Recordings will hire a nationally recognized publicity firm to handle outreach to rock and pop press. Jazz press, which comprises Ribot’s traditional support base, will be covered in-house • Service to CMJ Top 200, NPR, and independent radio stations in-house.

Overview Party Intellectuals is the debut recording from Marc Ribot’s Ceramic Dog, a post-everything band combining the energies of two masters of downtown New York mayhem: guitarist/vocalist Marc Ribot (Tom Waits, John Zorn, Robert Plant, T-Bone Burnett, Marianne Faithful, Lounge Lizards, Elvis Costello) and bassist Shahzad Ismaily (Laurie Anderson, Will Oldham, Jolie Holland, Secret Chiefs 3). Also features West Coast indie/experimental genius drummer Ches Smith (Xiu Xiu, Secret Chiefs 3, Trevor Dunn’s Trio Convulsant). Ribot is a widely recognized original on the guitar, with influence across multiple genres of music including rock, jazz, punk, Latin, soul, ’80s no-wave, avant-garde, and noise. Ceramic Dog draws all of this, along with Ismaily and Smith’s indie/electronica experimentation, into the power-packed Party Intellectuals.

“A blast of sound that [is] variously ominous, crude, and sly. There were handclaps and Cuban montunos; there was numbskull punk and roadhouse blues; there was the odd doom-metal drone … Prickly but popular, with a mood both breezy and intense.” — New York Times ALSO AVAILABLE

“A great new band is amping up the songs of ‘The King’: G.G. Elvis & The TCP Band, a group of musicians who helped begin the ‘nardcore’ music movement in Southern California, are out to rock audiences with their punk interpretations of Elvis Presley classics. They are tight and sound great, and they really know the genre … creating a raucous hybrid of punk rocker G.G. Allin and Elvis Presley.” — The Mail Tribune

Press Quotes “Podington Bear may be heavily indebted to the Aphex Twins and Brian Enos of the world, but he or she shares their ability to inject heart into a genre that can be icy and clinical by nature … when programmed correctly, robots can convey the soul-sick pathos of grieving poets.” — NPR Song of the Day “If you make music yourself, you’ll probably either feel inspired by or grow jealous of Podington Bear … I gave a listen, and the songs are not bad— inventive, not-in-your-face instrumental music that reminded me a bit of early-ish Múm.” — Wired “Simple, ambient instrumental tracks provide a beautiful background … that never comes off overbearing or distracting. The music, and rate at which Podington Bear is pumping out the tunes, puts him in contention for the ‘hardest working man in showbiz’ title.” — Muzzle of Bees “Here’s the kicker … this stuff is good.Very good, as a matter of fact. ” — Kinky Origami “The cutest thing to ever happen to your iPod.” — The Money Shot

Overview The definitive Podington Bear collection includes 10 CDs, 135 songs, and over 8 hours of music. Podington Bear is a modern music internet phenomenon. Profiled on NPR, Wired, heaps of blogs, and selected as a Best of 2007 podcast by the iTunes Music Store, P. Bear’s original method of music delivery has reached listeners far and wide. He serves up thousands of songs every day via his podcast on iTunes, cycling through the parade of music now contained in The Box Set. The music itself is 100% instrumental, inventive, delightful, and accessible. The sonic palate varies widely, juxtaposing acoustic instrumentation with synthesized and distorted sounds. The songs are constructed of simple melodies that mutate modally with surprising twists of composition. Touchstones would be Hot Chip, Björk, The Album Leaf, or early Múm. Little is known about this character except that he lives in Portland and prefers to work anonymously and alone. The body of work is represented uniformly by a simple line drawing of a bear, invoking a legacy and an ethos that surrounds the music. It is a collection that works in the foreground or the back. In this age of media saturation and attention deficit disorder, the Podington Bear box set is not unlike that novel or film that completely pulled you in, leaving you a little bit changed.

Overview The End is the ambitious swan song from internet phenomenon Podington Bear. It is an instrumental album that loosely addresses the classic stages of response to death and dying: achingly human but paradoxically made with machines. The seven songs serve up a 40-minute sonic journey of valleys, vistas, and turning corners. The songs themselves refuse classification, yet somehow go together as a collection. It’s a moody, panoramic, Technicolor album with melodies as simple as the instrumentation is complex.

Press Quotes “Flat-out, high energy improv, undulled by candy-ass melodic resolutions or riffic formalism.” — Byron Coley, Forced Exposure

Selling Points • First new recordings by this legendary avant jazz duo in over a decade! • Liner notes by Nick Cain (The Wire, Opprobrium). • Flaherty and Colbourne’s self-released LPs from the ’80s and ’90s are highly collectible. • Full press mailing by Family Vineyard. Heavy emphasis on New England press and radio.

Overview Don’t call it a comeback. This first release in almost a decade by Paul Flaherty and Randall Colbourne is a reawakening of a collaboration that has lain dormant for too long. Joining forces in the late 1980s, the two New Englanders released over a dozen uncompromising, raw albums of avant-garde jazz. Since then, Flaherty has expanded in the improv, out-rock, and noise camps (with Thurston Moore, Chris Corsano, and Sunburned Hand of the Man) while Colbourne pursued private study. Now, they’ve created eight compositions of coiling sax lines and polyrhythmic patterns that commemorate the past and celebrate the new.

Press Quotes “Trumpeter Bill Dixon has proved himself to be one of the most dedicated vanguardists in jazz, honing an instantly recognizable language on his instrument while composing at a furious rate.” — Time Out New York “Starkly removed from history and tradition, and yet eerily and achingly redolent of its revolutionary moments, Dixon’s compositions form an equally disparate and unified body of work that ranks among the finest this country has offered the world.” — All About Jazz

Selling Points • First album-length orchestral work by legendary composer/trumpeter Bill Dixon since 1967. • Specially commissioned by Arts for Art, Inc. (producers of the Vision Festival), 17 Musicians made its incredibly well received debut at Vision Festival XII in 2007. That performance is presented here in its entirety. • This album, in combination with the Thrill Jockey release of Bill Dixon with Exploding Star Orchestra, makes 2008 a watershed year in the rich lifetime work of Bill Dixon. • Service/promotion to national press/e-media and targeted regional press by Improvised Communications. • Service/promotion to college/non-commercial radio by Improvised Communications. • Ads with All About Jazz (New York), Signal to Noise, Stop Smiling, and more.

Overview 2008 marks the magnificent return of the legendary Bill Dixon: composer, trumpeter, teacher, and all-around musical force. His contributions to the body of great Black American Music first began in the 1960s: performing and recording with Archie Shepp and Cecil Taylor; producing the groundbreaking October Revolution concert series in NYC 1964 (which featured John Coltrane, Ornette Coleman, and many others); and as architect of the Jazz Composers Guild. In the late ’60s he left “the scene” but continued to leave an indelible mark on music by devoting himself to teaching from 1968 onward, creating the Black Music Division at Bennington College in 1973. While he has never stopped composing (prolifically at that), and has produced a series of rarified small ensemble recordings, his work for expanded orchestral ensemble has gone unrecorded and/or unreleased since his momentous album Intents and Purposes (RCA, 1967). Bill Dixon with Exploding Star Orchestra, a well-received collaboration with Rob Mazurek (Exploding Star Orchestra), was released by Thrill Jockey in February. And now, this album—a tour de force of orchestral composition, conduction, and improvisational exploration—fully composed by Bill Dixon and performed with the Bill Dixon Orchestra. 17 Musicians in Search of a Sound: Darfur was specially commissioned by Arts for Art, Inc. (producers of the Vision Festival). It is one of three such commissions that made their concert debuts at Vision Festival XII in 2007. Roy Campbell’s Akhenaten Suite was the first released (in March) and the next shall be William Parker’s orchestral work Double Sunrise Over Neptune (due in August). ALSO AVAILABLE

• Featured on William Parker’s immensely beautiful Corn Meal Dance, this is Eri Yamamoto’s first release as leader on AUM Fidelity. • A remarkably inviting and compelling series of compositions in duo with some of the most creatively gifted musicians today—Daniel Carter, William Parker, Hamid Drake, and Federico Ughi. • Service/promotion to national press/e-media and targeted regional press by Improvised Communications. • Service/promotion to college/non-commercial radio by Improvised Communications. • Ads with All About Jazz (New York), Signal to Noise, Stop Smiling, and more.

Overview Eri Yamamoto moved to NYC from Japan a little over a decade ago. A classically trained piano prodigy, she initially came to visit her sister, but after hearing Tommy Flanagan perform in trio in Central Park, she had a momentous revelation that her future would be in jazz music. When William Parker recorded his first album of compositions for piano trio, he chose Yamamoto to occupy that seat (Luc’s Lantern, 2005). He then brought her into his Raining on the Moon ensemble, and the wisdom of that decision is in full evidence on their recent album, Corn Meal Dance. She fully impressed Matthew Shipp as well, who brought her to the Blues Series/Thirsty Ear label to record her trio album Cobalt Blue in 2006. Duologue is Eri Yamamoto’s first album as a leader outside of the piano trio format. She composed each piece specifically with each duo partner in mind, and each piece is informed and suffused by his or her respective musical and personal essence. Contemplative, jubilant, and mesmerizing songs, they are increasingly rewarding with each successive listen. Her improvisations within them, guided by the rhythm as much as the melody, are invitingly exploratory while remaining in service to the song at hand.
