Clearly indicating a new artistic lease of life, The Minutes is arguably Alison’s most creative album. It has subtle parallels to her synth-pop past but is also bang up-to-date, taking in elements of high-end pop smashes, R&B, modern club sounds, and electronic experimentation. Panoramic strings and icy electronics start proceedings on album opener “Horizon Flame” before the massive-chorusmeets-jerky-robotic-R&B of “Changeling” kicks in. “Apple Kisses” highlights the versatility of Alison’s singing; having defined dancefloor synth-pop in Yazoo, this track sees her voice equally at home soaring over a snarling bass line that wouldn’t sound out of place tearing from the Fabric sound system. Shango is an album loaded with history. Originally recorded in 1974 in a Camden studio session funded by money from a TV soundtrack recorded by Peter King a few years earlier, it remained unreleased for close to 30 years — despite King releasing five albums in the years that followed; the band touring America, Europe, and Japan; and King establishing himself in the West as one of Nigeria’s finest multiinstrumentalists. The album finally saw release in 2002, by which point King had returned to his homeland to found the Peter King College of Music and continue his lifelong dedication to seeing “how far I can go with highlife fusion.” Musically the album is loaded, fusing funk, jazz, and Afrobeat with hard-hitting vocal messages including calls for freedom in Africa and references to African history and the Yoruba religion. “Shango” is the foremost Yoruba deity, god of thunder and storms, and on this album his energy is clearly channeled into the horn lines and devastating grooves found throughout the eight tracks.

One of Ghana’s finest producers and arrangers, Ebo Taylor was involved in a lot of the Afro-funk to emerge from the country in the ’70s, working with bands such as Apagya Show Band and fellow musicians C.K. Mann and Pat Thomas. Conflict was originally released in 1980 and is finally seeing a long-overdue reissue on Mr Bongo, following a partial remake as part of Taylor’s 2009 Love and Death album. The five tracks that make up Conflict are a perfect example of Taylor’s trademark approach, which saw him inject a heavy dose of funk into Ghana’s traditional highlife grooves in an attempt to move away from what he saw as the music’s more traditional qualities. Taylor’s arrangements and funky grooves, combined with lyrics that touch on subjects ranging from love to religion, make Conflict a standout opus of Ghanaian Afro-funk ripe for rediscovery.

Duane Pitre’s new album, Bridges, features two pieces taken from a suite of analogous compositions by the same name, and was composed by Pitre in 2012.
