Nail welcomes boompa records

p. 4–5 Since 2003, Boompa Records has focused on the development of a diverse and creative roster of artists. Based in Vancouver, Boompa was founded by Robert Calder and Scott Walker of the Canadian indie pop band The Salteens. Boompa’s catalog features over 35 releases by a varied lineup including The Rentals, The Hylozoists, The Lucksmiths, Small Sins, and Leeroy Stagger. 2009 saw the addition of Reverie Sound Revue, Circlesquare, and Woodpigeon to the roster, and 2010 brings with it the debut of label hometown boy Christopher Smith. Boompa is distributed by NAIL in the US, Outside in Canada, and p*dis in Japan.

Nail welcomes UNSEEN WORLDS

p. 8–9 Unseen Worlds is a record label that releases quality editions of unheralded and revolutionary, yet accessible, avant-garde music. The sound is genre-busting—straddling pop, jazz, classical, and new age music—equal parts enjoyable and intellectually stimulating. Not fairly called a “fusion” label, Unseen Worlds releases are about highlighting special instances of the rare, unique musicality of excellent adventurous music recordings.

Overview

“For a long time I’ve been thinking about how to create spaces into which one can retreat, where one can find quiet, where one can see, hear, where one is able to concentrate, where one is isolated from the world around but still is able to participate in it … by means of art or music or both.” — Rolf Julius, 1987

Futurism and Dadaism both made use of the synthesis of audio and visual arts to create a singular experience greater than the sum of its parts. The Fluxus and Minimalism movements further advanced this idea. Born in 1939 in Wilhelmshaven, Germany, Rolf Julius was profoundly influenced and inspired by these movements while he studied art in Bremen and Berlin. Over the next 30 years Julius went on to create some of the most meaningful and moving works in the grey area between music and art, sound and silence. Whether it is his small objects, minimal compositions, or subtle and sometimes almost hidden outdoor installations, Julius’ works serve as catalyst, increasing our awareness of the great beauty of the world that surrounds us.

Nervous Curtains is the primary songwriting outlet for singer and pianist Sean Kirkpatrick, perhaps better known as a member of The Paper Chase (Kill Rock Stars). Drummer Robert Anderson (The Deathray Davies) and keyboardist/noisemaker Ian Hamilton (Jack With One Eye) helped to develop a unique guitar-free sound. Out Of Sync With Time, the band’s debut full-length, was recorded by Matthew Barnhart (Shearwater) and mixed by John Congleton (Explosions in the Sky, Black Mountain). Kirkpatrick’s songs explore bizarre twists in human sensory perception, while the band’s dramatic pulsations ride wild mood swings of grandiose pop, dubbed-out synth bass excursions, Cohen-esque balladry, and even a dark, drony take on The Minutemen’s “Jesus and Tequila.”

Built on a bed of dreamy delay-laden guitars and innocent keyboard lines, led by Lisa Lobsinger’s distinctive coo, RSR’s 2003 debut EP turned heads across Canada. But the band separated in 2004: Lobsinger joined Broken Social Scene, while other RSR members earned degrees in math, art, and architecture. Inspired to make the album they were unable to make while together, they exchanged ideas via e-mail and the result is Reverie Sound Revue, an otherworldly exploration of pop music drenched in reverb and a soundtrack for zero-gravity.

His third full-length and follow up to the internationally acclaimed Treasury Library Canada, the fifteen tracks on Die Stadt Muzikanten move and contort like a film soundtrack. For more than two decades, De/Vision members Steffan Keth and Thomas Adam have been captivating fans of electronic pop music. Over this span of time, the band has released 10 albums, gone through lineup changes, experimented with styles, and written a slew of enduring pop classics. Hot on the heels of the critically acclaimed album NOOB, the boys from De/Vision have once again emerged from the studio with all new material. Working together with their favorite producer team, Schumann & Bach, the new album is a worthy addition to De/Vision’s musical legacy. Seamlessly moving from danceable tracks such as “Flash of Life” to the slower, lyrically driven “Be A Light To Yourself,” Popgefahr is a well-rounded, cohesive album.

Mind.In.A.Box’s past three albums have garnered a lot of respect with fans and critics alike due to their hard-to-categorize style of electronic music. Their newest album, R.E.T.R.O., takes a slightly different approach to their songwriting. An homage to the era of the Commodore 64 and 1980s video games, the album even includes a few cover versions of cult classics—all done in MIAB’s signature style. However, do not take these adaptations lightly: this is not just another cut and paste cover album. This is Mind.In.A.Box reinventing the past for an advanced future.

• RIYL: Pink Martini, Chicha Libre, Susana Baca, Asha Bosle, The Kronos Quartet. • First album in three years from a band with a large and loyal cult following. • Previous album, Panamericana, was an NPR favorite! • Features special guests, the internationally acclaimed Parker String Quartet. • Publicity by Junkie PR, who will also work a general campaign for Barbès for the first half of 2010. • Servicing college and public radio. Targeting NPR, which covered the last album extensively (live appearance on Weekend Edition, Studio 360, Soundcheck, and more). • Promotional tour dates on the East Coast and Midwest around the time of the release. • Ads with blogs and online publications.

Overview

Las Rubias’ third album is a Latin-influenced, vintagesounding record with superb female vocals and arrangements using Hammond, electric guitars, Farfisa, vibes, cuatro, percussion, and a classical string quartet. The songs run from an intimate Neapolitan ballad and a Bollywood production to a Kurt Weill song in French and a classic Chicha. While the dynamic range and the geographic scope are wider than their previous records, Las Rubias keep the Pan-Latin spirit alive by treating it all like it was recorded in Veracruz in 1962.

U.S. ORDERS ONLY U.S. ORDERS ONLY

For the first time on CD, “Blue” Gene Tyranny’s first album from 1977 (originally one of the first Lovely Music releases) is beautifully re-mastered, with new artwork and a 24-page booklet. Blue is a Grammy-nominated composer and pianist who has performed on records by Robert Ashley (Perfect Lives), John Cage, and Laurie Anderson, yet this is quite different. Composing for what is essentially a chamber rock ensemble, a cast of female vocalists, and himself (on the Polymoog and RMI synthesizers), Blue has created a song-cycle that reflects his intensely melodic and free piano technique in a polished studio record. Out of the Blue elegantly combines adventurous New Music technique, the style and appeal of pop music, and the grace of classical music to form an unclassifiable and totally revelatory whole. Endearing, exciting, familiar yet unlike anything else—this is a very friendly record.

First-ever CD of Carl Stone’s debut album, originally released on Joan La Barbara’s Wizard Records in 1983. Re-mastered for CD, with original artwork and new accompanying notes by Phill Niblock. Woo Lae Oak is a 54-minute tape piece based around minimal samples of strings and wind that layer, deconstruct, and reform into an expansive, shimmering whole.

Re-mastered from the privately produced master tapes with new artwork and an 8-page photo booklet. Lubomyr Melnyk’s debut album from 1978 is an unheralded touchstone of minimalism. Performing solo on piano with a speed that suggests multiple pianos playing together in harmony, Melnyk nearly brings out the full sound of the instrument all at once. His music is lush and maximal, yet it possesses the restrained, slowly evolving nature found in music by artists like Steve Reich and Terry Riley. Melnyk developed his unique approach to minimalism while working with dancer/ choreographer Carolyn Carlson (who also worked with Igor Wakhevitch) in Paris during the 1970s. Carlson’s influence led Melnyk to create music that is dramatic enough for the stage, yet meditative enough for deep listening: a version of minimalism with the enigmatic traces of Satie.

Elodie Lauten The Death of Don Juan

Genre: Classical/Experimental Label: Unseen Worlds CD: USW 4 Price Code: N (SRP $12.99) Jewel Case; Box Lot 30 Street Date: 3/9/10 U.S. ORDERS ONLY

CD debut of this 1985 post-minimal landmark by Elodie Lauten, featuring performances by Arthur Russell and Peter Zummo. Originally self-produced and released as a small LP edition on her own label, it has been touted ever since by Kyle Gann, who adds notes to this edition, and it was recently included on one of Alan Licht’s Minimal Top Ten lists. Lauten has been active in the downtown New York classical and punk scenes since moving from France in the 1970s. The Death of Don Juan is a breakthrough album for its bold, lyrical minimalism in concert with a dramatic sensibility that is deeply faithful to the modern existential emotional experience.

Overview

A 2-CD collection of piano works by post-minimalist composer Elodie Lauten, most of which is available for the first time ever on CD. The albums Piano Works (1983) and Concerto for Piano and Orchestral Memory (1984), both reissued in their entirety with re-mastered sound, incorporate found and prerecorded sounds into lyrical minimalist piano works in a highly personal— even baroque—style. They are deeply meditative and expansive, but do not require the epic lengths enjoyed by Glass, Reich, or Riley. Pop-song length seems to be the standard, yet this never betrays the sensitivity of the works. Contemporary luminaries Arthur Russell and Peter Zummo, who were on a similar path themselves, contribute to the Concerto. Also included in this set is Lauten’s performance of her later masterpiece “Variations on the Orange Cycle” (1991), included in Chamber Music America’s Century List of important 20th century works, as well as other previously unreleased tracks.

Ware’s triumphant return to performance following his kidney transplant in May 2009. Ware, in full peak of form, performed three extended pieces, each one on a different horn. “Methone” is on the saxello, and “Pallene” features the stritch. He has played these lesser-known members of the saxophone family for many decades, and recorded with them in the late ’80s, but this was the first time he has performed with them live on stage. The final piece, “Anthe,” is performed on his main axe, the mighty tenor sax.

Brooklyn band World Atlas started in 2006 as a handful of four-track bedroom demos that were sketches of songs mirroring stories afforded by the city. The idea culminated in a full ensemble including guest member Fred Thomas (Saturday Looks Good To Me) on guitar and The Umbrella Girls, who often serve as the group’s hand-clappers, back up singers, and tambourine shakers. Their first self-titled EP is a pop atlas steeped in nostalgia and allegory that exudes the aesthetic of a library of weathered books and stolen glances. Their instrumentation includes vibraphone, organ, shakers, trumpet, and string arrangements that take the music beyond the pop confines of drums, bass, and guitar. Infused with boy/girl harmonies and countermelodies, the resulting songs depict both innocence and experience. This is the band’s first release, and work on a second full-length album is underway.

Selling Points

• RIYL: Ornette Coleman, John Zorn Masada, Don Cherry, Charles Lloyd, Dave Douglas. • First exploration of the Persian dastgah together with the Iraqi maqam in a jazz context. • ElSaffar has studied and played with Cecil Taylor, while Modirzadeh has done the same with Ornette Coleman. They bring the influences of these two towers of avant-garde jazz together in their music. • Full press mailing to newspapers, magazines, music critics, jazz and classical magazines, and blogs. • Full radio servicing to CMJ and JazzWeek panel jazz stations, and NPR programming.

Overview

Radif Suite is an important new recording in the continuing advancement of jazz from trumpeter Amir ElSaffar and tenor saxophonist Hafez Modirzadeh. The release marks the first exploration of the Iraqi maqam and the Persian dastgah in a jazz context. Both ElSaffar and Modirzadeh are of mixed heritage (Iraqi American and Iranian American, respectively) whose musical careers are dedicated to expressing their ancestral traditions within a highly personalized and creative jazz language. ElSaffar, who has spent years traveling abroad seeking out masters who could impart to him the Iraqi maqam tradition, composed the highly acclaimed Two Rivers Suite, the first work joining maqam with jazz. Modirzadeh, who spent years under the guidance of Iranian master musician Mahmoud Zoufounoun, has developed his own “chromodal” approach, which brings together Persian modes with jazz into one cohesive system. They are joined here by world-renowned bassist Mark Dresser and master drummer Alex Cline.

SONGS ABOUT FUCKING STEVE ALBINI Selling Points

• RIYL: Tigerbeat, IDM, drone. • A tribute to all things analog from one of the major contributors to electronic music in this decade. • Strong press and radio push by Important Records. • Ads with The Wire.

Overview

A collection of psychedelic love songs paying tribute to all things analog! Similar to older Kid606 releases like PS I Love You, GQ on the EQ, The Soccergirl EP, and Why I Love Life, this album was carefully constructed to be the soundtrack for the peak 72 minutes of your next trip. The songs all linger on just long enough. You hear voices you can’t understand, but you will know what they are saying. Every track has its distinct identity and direction, to completely throw you from one headspace to another. All the songs on this album were created with analog source material. None have beats or percussion to weigh you down, and they are all love songs. Composed over the years in many different places, each song represents a phase of indulgent musical composition that only deserved to have its best parts represented on this album. After compiling and editing all the songs on a computer, they were mixed down and mastered through analog equipment to two-track analog tape.

Mastered by James Plotkin and recorded and mixed from April-September of 2009 at the same east LA hillside studio (“Green Machine”) where Raiders was tracked. The goal with Burners was to make a record fusing the recent song-based structures of Raiders and the Pagan Drugs 7” into some of the older-style Robedoor dronesprawl architectures. All songs were written/sculpted over the course of constant live shows (“Burning Man” in particular was an ’09 live staple). Like all Robedoor titles, Burners is sure to move quickly and when it’s gone, it’s gone.

Mugstar hover in the realm of Oneida and Sonic Youth, fitting well beside such Important artists as Cave and A Place To Bury Strangers. A forceful and compelling album, …Sun, Broken… delivers a range of power, textures, and soundscapes, from the turbocharged opener and the eerie atmospherics of “Labrador Hatchet” through the Kraut-rocking “Today Is The Wrong Shape” and the expansive voyage of closing track “Furklausundbo.”

Dave Szolwinski, proprietor of Milwaukee record store Earwaves, founded Fuckface in 1990. A man with a vision, he culled the members of the band from the numerous eclectic personalities that frequented his store, eventually settling into a more or less stable lineup featuring three drummers—no cymbals or snare drums allowed—two guitarists, a bassist, and a scrap-metal percussionist, with Szolwinski’s unique personality and vocal delivery out front. In early 1995, at the height of its powers and popularity, Fuckface recorded a nine-song self-titled album that, as fate would have it, went unreleased. Now, nearly 15 years after final mixdown, this document finally surfaces on Latest Flame Records, adding seven bonus tracks to the original nine, including both sides of the “Thorn” single, the lost remake of Frank Zappa’s “Why Don’tcha Do Me Right?”, and an early live reengineering of Die Kreuzen’s hardcore classic “All White,” inviting longtime fans and the uninitiated the chance to once more tap into the energy of this powerful ensemble.
