Overview
Portland indie orchestra Typhoon turned many a critical head in 2010 after releasing their epic Hunger and Thirst on Tender Loving Empire. They were named one of Portland’s Best New Bands by the Willamette Week, toured in support of Yann Tiersen, and opened for Belle & Sebastian and Avi Buffalo. A New Kind of House is the sequel to that 2010 epic. With these five multi-movement song cycles, A New Kind of House is far more than an EP. This fully realized recording finds the 12-piece ensemble at the height of its power, ready to take SXSW 2011 by storm. Rest assured, you will hear much more from Typhoon in the coming years.

Hosannas utilize unique analog instrumentation to unite factions of noise rock with psychedelic folk and experimental pop. Song Force Crystal, their debut LP, hones the musical themes heralded in the band’s two prior EPs. Picking up where Gold and With All Our Love for Francisco the Man left off, Song Force Crystal was recorded in a living room to an 8-track tape machine. The album reverberates with a warmth and rawness more familiar to ’70s-era basement productions than to modern day digitalia. Song Force Crystal is a contradiction of sounds, at once expansive and cohesive, experimental yet familiar, brooding one moment and soothing the next.

Genre: Alt Rock Label: File Under Music CD: FUM 10 Price Code: Q (SRP $15.99) Number of Discs: 1 Digipak; Box Lot 50 Street Date: 3/8/11 U.S. ORDERS ONLY
COVER STICKER: The debut solo album from David Vertesi of Hey Ocean!
Although he is best known as part of the Vancouver indie pop group Hey Ocean!, it is quickly becoming clear that David Vertesi will not be restrained by the straightjacket hold of a single genre, band, or sound. Having toured coast to coast countless times, his range is as varied as the artists he collaborates with, from underground rap sensation Shad K and indie-rock veteran Jose Miguel Contreras (By Divine Right) to indie-pop songstress Hannah Georgas and the over the top garage-synth antics of Topless Gay Love Tekno Party. On this concept-driven album about learning to love, Vertesi’s refreshing frankness (“Gentlemen Say”) and often-painful sincerity (“Mountainside”) steer the project clear of anything ordinary.
Press Quotes
“Hey Ocean!’s David Vertesi maps the trails of love and love’s loss on his solo debut … an album soaked with synths that soothe like a dose of Ambien and pulse like a lulling, ambient light.” — See magazine

“Ginga” is the Brazilian word for their special soccer skill. Brazil is the only place that has such a word, as only they have this unique flair. The romance of Brazilian soccer is the graceful, skilful, and acrobatic style of play, in tune with the musicality and contagious good spirit of their fans. The rhythm, happiness, and ingenuity that mark Brazilian soccer makes it perfect musical subject matter. It has inspired almost all of the great 20th century popular artists, including Chico Buarque, Gilberto Gil, Caetano Veloso, Elis Regina, and Jorge Ben.

Overview
STREET DATE MARCH 8, 2011
More samba than bossa, this album has sophisticated phrasing that you might expect in some of the EMI/Odeon work from earlier in the decade. Cravo & Canela harmonies are reminiscent of Sergio Mendes in the ’60s, but with soulful piano and beautiful layered vocals on top. Tracks range from vintage Noel Rosa to latter-day originals by special guest Sivuca, all delivered with true Brazilian warmth.

• Sampled on J-Lo’s huge hit “Jenny from the Block,” and by the likes of the Black Eyed Peas, Xzibit, LL Cool J, Salt-n-Pepa, and more.
Overview
In 1976, the 20th Century Steel Band released their debut Warm Heart, Cold Steel. It proved to be a landmark album, and featured the now-heavily-sampled track “Heaven & Hell Is On Earth.” The band’s appearance on New Faces in 1974 (the equivalent of American Idol) catapulted them to fame. They won a lucrative recording deal with the now-defunct United Artists, and were invited onto TV and radio programs, including a session with the late John Peel. Sadly, the band split up shortly after. Now, after 30 years, original members Michael Oliviere and Godfran Moore have reformed the group with a new line-up and are re-releasing their seminal album on Mr Bongo Recordings. Warm Heart, Cold Steel is an upbeat, feel-good album of 13 tracks recorded against a backdrop of seductive steel drum. The infectious, instantly recognizable hook of the heavily sampled track “Heaven & Hell” has appeared in songs such as Jennifer Lopez’s “Jenny from the Block,” Black Eyed Peas’ “Say Goodbye,” Xzibit’s “Los Angeles Times,” LL Cool J’s “Todd Smith,” and Salt-n-Pepa’s “Very Necessary,” to name just a few. Although sampling 20CSB was widespread, it was also done without the band’s knowledge or permission. Composer Michael Oliviere successfully sued for unpaid royalties, and recently received recognition for his contribution to music with awards from BMI and ASCAP.

On Hidden Conversations, MA’s Robert Del Naja co-wrote “Wings” and “John Lee Hooker,” and exclusively wrote “Live With Me.” The collaboration of Massive Attack’s haunting production and Callier’s beautiful, emotive vocals is, quite simply, stunning.

From Blue Oyster Cult to Guided By Voices with some Nick Cave thrown in, this is the new release from Portland-by-way-of-Nashville indie rockers Gay Ghost. There are more than a few gems on this first proper release from wicked prolific demi-genius Joe Mormann—the first demo he sent to Bladen County had 55 songs on it, and none of them were bad. Bladen County leader Matt Brown convinced Joe and drummer Jeff Schmell to move to Portland so he could help them get their young, confused career pointed in the right direction, and the band is planning four album releases for 2011.

Overview
Mint is pleased to introduce a new sound and a new signing! Geoff Berner’s openness to experimentation, spirited Eastern European klezmer influences, punk rock attitude, and work with producer Josh Dolgin all result in an innovative, engaging, and lively album full of surprises. After completing his highly acclaimed Whiskey Rabbi trilogy of trio albums, it was time for Berner to move on. “I wanted to make an album that sounded bigger, more klezmer, and more transgressive, all at the same time. And I knew I couldn’t do without Josh.” Josh Dolgin, a.k.a. Socalled, is an acknowledged genius of modern Jewish music famous for his own albums, which fuse hip-hop and klezmer. Berner’s live shows tend to devolve into crazed, chaotic, drunken dancing and psychotic laughter. He has built a sizable cult following through extensive touring, and audiences of odd, bookish people who like to drink come out to pack bars in Berlin, Amsterdam, Oslo, and Zurich, as well as Canada. Look out for the Victory Party to hit your town this year!

Larissa is the fifth closest of Neptune’s 13 moons. Her orbit is circular but not perfect, and may eventually impact Neptune’s atmosphere. This fact, like many others related to the making of Larissa Loyva’s second solo album, achieved relevance after the titular song was written. The album was recorded from June–October 2010 at the tail end of a seven-year relationship, the songs written in the preceding two to three years. In the follow-up to 2008’s Flamingo, Kellarissa has succeeded in creating a haunting, introspective, compelling, and thought-provoking audio gem.

Despite amassing scene status and praise from regional press right out of the gate, Orlando band The Pauses release their debut album after TWO YEARS of existence. The official excuse was “wanting to do things properly,” so they saved their money and headed up to Baltimore to record at Magpie Cage Studios with the legendary J. Robbins, even enlisting three-quarters of the dude’s own band. Produced, engineered, and mixed by Robbins; mastered by T.J. Lipple (Aloha); and featuring guest appearances from members of Deleted Scenes, Office of Future Plans, and Channels, A Cautionary Tale is an exercise in complexity and combination, a world where guitars are BFFs with synthesizers, horns, bells, and ukuleles.

Overview
Get ready to krank it to 11 as KMFDM proudly announces their first new single in over nine years! Krank follows in the grand tradition of KMFDM’s many “five-letter” singles such as Boots (2002), Light (1994), Money (1992), Virus (1989), and more. Krank contains the two latest anthems, “Krank” and “Day of Light,” and features multiple versions of each one for a total of five tracks, providing almost 25 minutes of music. None of the tracks found on this single will be on the band’s forthcoming 2011 full-length album; the Krank single is the only place they can be heard.

It feels like an eternity since Jimmyjoe Snark III (a.k.a. The Weathermen), exploded onto the EBM scene with the track “Poison.” Singer Frank Spinath, on the other hand, is known for his comparatively more recent projects Seabound and Edge of Dawn. Spinath managed to persuade Jimmyjoe to collaborate, and the result is finally here! In their own words: “Our songs are like short films. Like the characters in a film noir, the protagonists in our songs are often fighting a losing battle because they romanticize too deeply that which they cannot have, and so they collapse. Musically the album is characterized by a certain effortlessness, like old movie theaters or carousels. It resonates not only with playfulness, but also with a deep romantic desire.”

Following the success of their promo EP Scissors, live shows around the UK, and regular international club & radio play, industrial synthcore unit Method Cell makes its mark with an album set to shake up the scene. Combining high-energy harmonics and acerbic lyrics with searing bass and beats, Method Cell proves there’s more to a club hit than swearing by numbers, and industrial doesn’t have to mean monotone. Their debut album, Curse of a Modern Age, contains three solid club tracks: “Call It Cutting,” “Scissors,” and “Believe.” Other tracks like—“Blame Me (The Curse pt1)” and “Drop Dead”—confirm that Method Cell is more than just a club band, showcasing witty lyrics and catchy grooves.

Overview
Gay Beast formed in mid-2005 during a fit of anxiety towards Midwestern passive aggression, as an attempt to make music that was queer in both composition and aesthetic. Wielding a battery of drums, scraped and hammered guitars, chanted vocals, retro-future synths, saxophone, and other electronics, the trio builds songs that adjoin complexity and catchiness in a space inhabited by both abrasion and tunefulness. With releases on DNT, Gilgongo, and Skin Graft, Gay Beast has garnered a reputation for uniqueness on the rock fringe, their sound being both too weird for the stereotype of a “gay band” and “too gay” for the noise-rock set. Upon examination of the influence blender, one finds remnants of Devo, Captain Beefheart, equatorial pop-rock from the ’60s and ’70s, No-Wave, and feminist theory. This concoction, delivered via Gay Beast’s unique political approach to composition, is explored heavily on their third album To Smithereens.

Dress Like Your Idols sees BOAT further refining their self-proclaimed sloppy pop into a noisy sugar-pop masterpiece. This time out, the band tackles 13 songs about love—love of women, their dogs, art, and their idols. Dress Like Your Idols saw the band recording in a studio for the first time (the now-defunct Two Sticks Audio in Seattle), in addition to their usual method of recording at home, and was mixed by Cam Nicklaus and Jackson Long (BOAT’s drummer). This is the sound of a band growing comfortable with the tools of improved production while still keeping the sing-along hooks that make them your next favorite band.

Overview
When a star burns as brightly as it did for Virginia’s Alabama Thunderpussy, it’s not surprising that it might take a while for the ashes to cool. That probably explains why it’s taken Erik Larson so long to put together a proper new band. Two solo albums, countless side projects, and lot of patient waiting from fans finds a new beast ready to rise from the ashes. This is The Might Could, just a couple of good old southern boys who set out to “follow the riff” and take us along for the ride. On their debut self-titled album for Small Stone, a world of front-porch moonshine, crazy southern women, and back-alley scrapping emerges, all the while providing a soundtrack to the madness that keeps you wanting more.

As they ready for the release of their newly-minted self-titled record on the Small Stone label, Roadsaw makes one thing perfectly clear: their sound is as searing and sleazy today as it was when they rose from the blue blood streets of Boston 18 years ago. For their sixth full length release (and second on Small Stone) the band called upon longtime associate and legendary producer Sean Slade. Known mostly for his work with indie stars The Pixies, Radiohead, and Dinosaur Jr., Slade also possesses a record collector’s mind and a love for all things loud. When he agreed to dust off the 24-track Studer tape deck in the corner of the studio and record the new tracks to two-inch analog tape, Roadsaw knew they had their man. With Mad Oak Studio wiz-kid Benny Grotto twisting the knobs and Slade’s sagely guidance, Roadsaw laid down their most potent record to date.

They self-released their first album in 2009, and sold well over 3,000 copies with no label or distribution. Their label debut, released in August 2010, was the 7” single Sick Of It All, and as of mid-November it had sold out of the first pressing. With a new LP, more road to burn, and already hitting the studio for their follow-up, the F-Bombers are blazing a trail of pure adrenaline-inspired street rock that follows no rules, and no trends.

The members of this Vancouver-based post-hardcore/rock band started out in the hardcore band Strain, and the intensity of their roots is evident in the music they’re making today. Heavy, catchy, dark, and otherworldly are the words that come to mind when listening to their latest self-titled album, slated for release in early 2011. The songs on the album are just as emotional and expressive as their debut, but are more polished without losing any of the energy that was present on that release over 10 years ago.

Stars Sasha Grey of Steven Soderbergh’s The Girlfriend Experience and HBO’s “Entourage.” Singled out in Maxim’s Top 10 Up & Coming Starlets 2009, Sasha has generated millions of hits on YouTube and Facebook. She has appeared in Rolling Stone, Insider, LA Times, and NY Times—along with The Tyra Banks Show—and is actively promoting Smash Cut. The special effects on director Able Whitman’s new shock-horror film just aren’t cutting it. Sick of the bad reviews from critics and fans alike, Able decides to bring a new level of horrific reality to his film set. He realizes that nothing looks more like a dead body than an actual dead body, so he embarks on a prop-hunting killing spree!
“A riotous blend of arterial spray and grindhouse glee.” — New York Times Ami was an average high school girl, popular and athletic, trying to lead a normal life. But her world came crashing down when bullies killed her brother. When Ami goes after her revenge, she soon finds herself in over her head, with her left arm lost. Barely surviving, Ami escapes and seeks shelter with two kindly garage mechanics who fit her with a customized, high-powered, bullet-spewing arm. Now, Ami can continue on her quest for revenge! A cult classic from the directors of Death Trance and Tokyo Gore Police. NTSC, Region 1, Widescreen/Full Screen 16x9/4x3, Color, Sub/Dub (Stereo), Not Rated. Run Time: 96 min.
