In addition to the first three (Op. 2), it contains the late sonatas including the celebrated “Hammerklavier.” This sonata is not only one of the cornerstones of the cycle, but also a key work in Guy’s personal musical trajectory; this is the third time he has recorded it. He chose to record the entire series live, in the course of a series of concerts at the Arsenal de Metz, France. He firmly believes that this method, in direct contact with an audience, is the best way to represent his relationship with the sonatas and his interpretation of them.

Yury Martynov: piano BEETHOVEN, trans. Liszt: Symphony No. 7 in A major, Op. 92 • Symphony No. 1 in C major, Op. 21 Russian pianist Yury Martynov presents the second volume of the complete recording of the cycle of Beethoven’s symphonies, as transcribed for the piano by Franz Liszt. For both the pianist and the listener, this recording constitutes a genuine adventure, combining the creative genius of Beethoven, the inspired vision of these works by composer and pianist Franz Liszt, and a piano with the same sonic resources that were available to Liszt. For these two symphonies, Martynov has chosen the same Érard piano of 1837 on which he recorded the first volume of this series. That CD, featuring Symphonies 6 & 2, received a particularly warm welcome from the press including a “Choc” de Classica in May 2012.

Among the first pianists to put their own interpretations on record were composers like Rachmaninov, Scriabin, Prokofiev, Stravinsky, Debussy, and Ravel. Of these, Debussy & Ravel’s recordings are especially significant since their musical style was built on higher attention to detail and the slightest shades of dynamics and rhythm. The composers’ own interpretations are an unquestionable model of how these pieces should sound, for both listener and professional musician.

Melodiya E. Andreyeva, E. Bulavin, V. Radziyevsky, et al: vocal soloists Choir & Orchestra of the State Moscow Stanislavsky and Nemirovich-Danchenko Music Theatre Gennady Provatorov: conductor SHOSTAKOVICH: Katerina Izmailova (complete opera) It is hard to name another opera with a fate as complicated and dramatic as that of Katerina Izmailova! In the early 1930s, Shostakovich came up with the idea of composing an opera based on Nikolai Leskov’s novel Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk District, perhaps the cruelest work in Russian classical literature. Finished in 1932, the opera shocked some conservative spectators but the majority welcomed it as the first really new word in Soviet and European music theatre. For two years, it was triumphantly staged in many theaters in the USSR and abroad. However, the opera was condemned after Stalin saw it, and was banned from the stage. The ban was finally lifted in the early 1960s, when Shostakovich realized the second edition of the opera under the name Katerina Izmailova. Now, Melodiya presents the first recording of Shostakovich’s opera, made at the Moscow Stanislavsky and Nemirovich-Danchenko Music Theatre in 1964, soon after the premiere of the second edition.

USSR Bolshoi Theatre Orchestra Yuri Simonov: conductor SHCHEDRIN: Anna Karenina (complete ballet) Melodiya presents a recording of one of the outstanding ballet works of the late 20th century! The title sheet of the score has a dedication “To Maya Plisetskaya, always.” The great ballet dancer (and Shchedrin’s spouse) not only initiated the creation of this work, she was also a choreographer and danced the main part. The premiere took place at the Bolshoi Theatre in 1971. Valeri Levental designed the stage setting, and Pierre Cardin created the costumes. Yuri Temirkanov, chief conductor of the Bolshoi Theatre, was at the stand. The ballet was one of the most successful productions of the Bolshoi Theatre in the 1970s and ’80s, and was shown more than a hundred times during 13 years.

Melodiya Galina Vishnevskaya: soprano Moscow Philharmonic Orchestra David Oistrakh: conductor MAHLER: Symphony No. 4 in G major for soprano and orchestra Another rare recording of David Oistrakh as a conductor! The outstanding violinist realized his dream of conducting for the first time in 1962. He conducted some of the well-known orchestras of Moscow, Leningrad, and European cities to enthusiastic reviews from both the public and music critics. This interpretation of Mahler’s Symphony No. 4 features Galina Vishnevskaya, who was at the peak of her vocal career at the time. The acute, poignant, and at the same time childishly naïve music of the final movement finds a splendid interpreter in this remarkable singer.

Maria Callas, Gino Bechi, Gino Sinimberghi, et al: vocal soloists Orchestra & Chorus of the San Carlo Theater Vittorio Gui: conductor VERDI: Nabucco (complete opera) “Callas’ Naples Nabucco … great singing, excitement … the huge two-octave runs are breathtaking; the passion, power, and rage palpable; and an optional high E-flat at the close of the duet with Nabucco (the estimable Gino Bechi) is hair-raising … self-recommending if you adore Callas. It’s part of the picture of who she was on the way to becoming who she wound up being.” — ClassicsToday Live performance, Naples, December 29, 1949. Nabucco, the king of Babylon, goes mad after proclaiming himself a god. While he is imprisoned, the slave girl Abigaille seizes his throne and condemns his daughter Fenena to death. When Nabucco sees Fenena being led to execution, he regains his senses, accepts the god of the Hebrews, and is freed and made king of Judah.

We hear a somewhat unusual configuration of instruments performing seldom-recorded music of the great master. Eirik Gjerdevik met Pleven Philharmonic Orchestra as guest soloist in 2010. The chemistry between soloist and orchestra was electric from the start, and plans were soon underway for a recording with the orchestra and conductor Bjørn Breistein. Besides the magnificent tuba concertos of Vaughan Williams and Aagaard-Nilsen, the CD features the latter’s exquisite composition “Music for Blue Days” for tuba and harp. The great Swedish composer Erland von Koch’s Tuba Concerto also receives its recording premiere on this album.

The recording juxtaposes early instruments (cornet and sackbut) with modern ones (trumpet and trombone) to showcase the capacity of jazz instruments to make themselves suitable for the music of the Middle Ages and the Renaissance.

After studying with Franco Donatoni, he worked on music informatics and composition with Tristan Murail and Brian Ferneyhough in the Cursus Musical at Ircam in Paris. This recording, which assembles his principal pieces for ensemble and electronics, gives insight into the current creative tendencies in Italy: a very Italian combination of lyricism and elegance. The album takes its title from “Dulle Griet,” the famous painting by Brueghel representing the mouth of Hell.

At the beginning of the 17th century, several collections of rather unusual madrigals appeared in northwestern Italy. The definition of this new musical genre was given by one of its major authors, Aquilino Coppini: “music drawn from madrigals and rendered spiritual.” What actually happened was that a well-defined circle of writers and musicians ventured upon the feat of transforming some madrigals by replacing their original texts with lines of sacred verse in Latin. It was not a translation, as in some English versions of Italian madrigals, but an actual replacement of the text based on a completely different subject matter.

The Piano Quartet K.493 was the first work Mozart composed after the premiere of his opera. It should therefore not be surprising if both of the works on this recording exhibit certain relationships to Figaro! After having reached such heights of perfection with these compositions, Mozart must have been terribly disappointed by Hoffmeister’s reaction to them: he found them (especially the Piano Quartet in G minor) to be too difficult for audiences. In light of the resulting disillusion, it is understandable why Mozart failed to complete this series of compositions.

Because of his musical education and the contact he had with musicians throughout Europe, Pachelbel is one of the most important figures of German Baroque music. He was the heir to an old and consolidated contrapuntal tradition, but at the same time, attentive and sensitive to new directions of music at the end of the century, especially in Italy. The collection of 1699 was entitled “Esacordo di Apollo,” which presents six arias for organ or harpsichord, to whose simple melodies are added variations for the pleasure of music lovers.

Mendelssohn composed his Quartet, Op. 13 in 1827 when he was only 18 years old and still a student in Berlin, at a point when some of his best-loved and appreciated instrumental and chamber works already counted among his compositions. This CD also includes a composition Franz Schubert was particularly fond of: the Quartettsatz. It was written in 1820 and maintains the lyric fervor of the Trout Quintet (which preceded it by a year), corroborated by the deep and passionate quality of his lieder compositions of the same period.
