Avie Records Orchestra of the Swan Kenneth Woods: conductor GÁL: Symphony No. 1 • R. SCHUMANN: Symphony No. 1 “Hats off to conductor Kenneth Woods and his Orchestra of the Swan, who have been making a case for Gál’s elegantly built orchestral pieces … Here’s hoping this is the beginning of a substantial Gál revival.” — NPR, All Things Considered With this release, Kenneth Woods and the Orchestra of the Swan make musical history by completing the first-ever recorded cycle of the Symphonies of Hans Gál! The Vienna-born composer’s Symphony No. 1 was written in 1927, when he was at the height of his powers, belying the turbulent central European events that would forever affect him in the coming years. The music is bold, uninhibited, and persuasive, the writing is virtuosic and the orchestration is colorful. Gál’s First Symphony reflects the essence of his compositional voice, to which he remained true throughout his nearly century-long life. As today’s most committed champion of Hans Gál’s music, which remained relatively dormant throughout the 20th century, Kenneth Woods has captured the imagination and introduced a new generation to Gál’s wide-ranging and extensive oeuvre.

The artist interweaves dream-inspired pieces such as Earl Wild’s transcription of “Rachmaninov’s Dreams,” Hindemith’s “In Einer Nacht,” and Schumann’s “Traumes Wirren” with the nocturnal “Night Music” by Bartók and Schumann’s “In der Nacht.” The climax of the program is Rachmaninov’s passionate Second Piano Sonata, performed with bravado.

Avie Records Marina Piccinini: flute PAGANINI: 24 Caprices, Op. 1 “Piccinini makes her own magic … Brilliant technical fluency and keen interpretive senses.” — Baltimore Sun “Splendidly recorded … evocative … the playing is first class.” — MusicWeb International Flutist Marina Piccinini relishes tradition with a twist! Having recorded J.S. Bach’s Flute Sonatas with the Brasil Guitar Duo — the first-ever recording using this combination of instruments (AVR 2196) — she astounds again with astonishing virtuosity in her own arrangements of Paganini’s devilishly difficult 24 Caprices. Piccinini matches Paganini’s vision and independence of spirit, explaining, “I was drawn to transcribe and record all the Caprices as a challenge and stimulus for my own development, a path towards pushing the envelope outside my personal comfort zone. What I discovered and fell in love with was a musical voice that demanded a far greater emotional expression through technical perfection of phrasing, flexibility of embouchure, depth of sound, breath control, digital dexterity, and precise articulation.”

Cypres Neue Vocalsolisten Stuttgart SWR Vocal Ensemble Stuttgart Marcus Creed: conductor APERGHIS: Wölfli-Kantata Anyone familiar with Georges Aperghis’ prolific catalog of vocal music, and with Adolf Wölfli’s still more prolific output of writings and drawings, will be struck by evidence of the parallel evolution of their oeuvres, distinct as these might be in time, in place, in the conditions of their production, and in artistic intention. Both display a curious fascination for enumeration, lists, figures, geometric, and symmetrical constructions and, above all, the use of a vocabulary that engulfs words and sentence fragments in a fog of seemingly nonsensical vocables. Both artists construct vast architectures that are at once decorative and physical, visual and mysteriously resonant, and both search constantly and almost obsessively for sense in the sentient, the ineffable and the inexpressible. In addition, both constantly deploy structures composed of dense, shifting layers, highly contrasted but always connected by an internal logic, which, while rendered visible by certain repetitive features and figures, remains unarticulated and unfathomable.

Mireille Delunsch: soprano Nora Gubisch: mezzo-soprano Edgaras Montvidas: tenor Jérôme Varnier: bass Symphony Orchestra & Chorus of La Monnaie Flemish Radio Choir Childrens Chorus of La Monnaie Ludovic Morlot: conductor BRUNEAU: Requiem • DEBUSSY: Symphonie Pelléas et Mélisande From Lully’s grand motets to Poulenc’s Stabat Mater, there is a magnificent tradition of sacred music in France. Whether manifest in the pomp of the Sun King, in revolutionary ardor, or in Meyerbeerian grand opéra, France has always had a fascination for the expression of grand passions, whether sacred or profane, and the influence of opera is undeniable in the epic works of Lesueur and Méhul, and even in the masses of Cherubini. A vacillation between high drama and devotion characterized the entire evolution of the genre of sacred music and, in particular, its ultimate and perhaps most spectacular embodiment, the Requiem Mass. The latter part of the 19th century brought a considerable output of religious works, and in France such important figures as César Franck, Théodore Dubois, Jules Massenet, and Émile Paladilhe all produced remarkable oratorios. In the 1880s it was therefore only to be expected that a young composer like Bruneau should attempt a large-scale religious work before launching a career in opera, which at the time was still the key to achieving a major reputation in France.

Technically, these productions were far ahead of their time; all of the recordings were produced with 24 bit/96 hz High Definition Technology and, by means of special high-performance filters, the masters were then converted into the common CD standard almost without loss. The result is brilliant sound and incredible transparency, which projects the purity of the instruments in the most natural way.

These 24 pieces of testimony — not only from victims and survivors, but also from the perpetrators — are powerful reminders of what happens when a society falls victim to its baser instincts, and it is hoped that these readings will inspire a new generation to act differently.

Moreover, one melody is found in all his symphonies, in which it is concealed to varying degrees. This melody is based on the Jewish song “Elijahu hanavi” about the prophet Elijah, whom the Jews anxiously await because he will bring redemption. Thanks to the presence — whatever its form — of this theme in the vast majority of his works, Hartmann’s resounding legacy can be heard as an abstract and highly impressive work of art.

The Quartet and Quintet represent a watershed in Parry’s compositional development, and his unique voice emerges through these seminal works. The Quartet channels his Dionysian energy and exercises his formidable contrapuntal skills, while the Quintet reveals the more poetic eloquence, warmth, and nobility of his mature style; both works are bathed in celestial melodic radiance.

SOMM Recordings Mark Bebbington: piano ALWYN: Fantasy Waltzes • Funeral Rites for the Death of an Artist • Bicycle Ride • Piece for Piano • Sonata alla Toccata • The Weather Vane • CARWITHEN: Sonatina Following highly acclaimed cycles of the piano music of Frank Bridge and John Ireland, Mark Bebbington’s new release for SOMM (and his 31st CD for the label!) focuses on the piano music of William Alwyn and his second wife, Doreen Carwithen. Although chiefly remembered today as a large-scale symphonic and film composer — Alwyn’s symphonies were championed by Barbirolli, Sargent, and Sir Thomas Beecham — his exceptional body of piano works spanned his creative life and reveals a composer entirely attuned to the inventive possibilities of 20th-century piano writing. As Mark Bebbington says: “The piano writing of Alwyn would grace any current day piano recital; its blend of lyricism, romantic heart-on-sleeve melodies, wit and — at times — acerbic harmonic language make for a heady mix. And yet Alwyn remains his own, individual man. Coupled with a real sense of keyboard virtuosity, these works are irresistible.”

Stone Records Sarah Castle: mezzo-soprano Samuel Evans: baritone Jill Carter: alto flute Sarah Thurlow: clarinet Rachel Bolt: viola CORP: Songs of the Elder Sisters

Ronald CORP

Following on from his critically acclaimed recording Dhammapada, Ronald Corp has again collaborated with writer Francis Booth to produce these settings of Buddhist texts, taken from the Therigatha. These words, written around 2,500 years ago, are not only some of the earliest extant poems by women, but also the only canonical work in any religion written entirely by women. The original authors were Buddhist nuns, and Booth has newly translated the texts for this recording. Corp’s settings are beautiful and spiritual, capturing the essence of this Eastern religion’s words in his own Western musical voice. As a Church of England priest, Corp’s choice of text is interesting, powerful, and important. These beautiful songs, accompanied by an all-female chamber ensemble of alto flute, clarinet, and viola, are beautifully performed by rising star soloists Sarah Castle and Samuel Evans.

In a laid-back manner and with apparent effortless ease, the American composer involves her entire vocal apparatus in the making of music. And the way in which she integrates other musicians into her elaborately detailed cosmos of sound makes listening a rare treat, and attests to a special talent. The intimate and familiar sound potential of the oral cavity is operated with brilliant skill to reveal a multitude of different facets, while the electrical amplification through a microphone elevates these delicate sounds to the dynamic range of their musical partners. The listener experiences a combination of human body sounds and musical instruments that is very modern, and very much alive.

LAWO Classics Nils Henrik Asheim: piano CHOPIN: Mazurkas Three years ago, Nils Henrik Asheim released Mazurka: Remaking Chopin, a collaborative project with Gjertrud’s Gypsy Orchestra. This release, which was awarded the Norwegian Grammy®, explored Chopin’s Mazurkas, creating new versions with traditional music as its most important influence. The new release has “researching” in the subtitle, as Asheim has been searching for Chopin with a historical instrument: a Collard & Collard square piano from the 1830s. He fell in love with the instrument during the last recording, at Ulefos Hovedgaard. The Collard & Collard piano offered new possibilities in the very playing of Chopin, and new insight into how his music originally sounded.

Mats Claesson: guitar GRIEG: Holberg Suite (arr. for guitar) Who are the people who decide the “correct” way to perform the music of the past? Now we are in an age when it’s possible to make electronic sounds that can imitate exactly the sounds a performer makes. Where does this leave the performers of the future? Can the use of modern music technology challenge the way in which classical music is played? These are a few of the questions Mats Claesson intrinsically poses with this recording.

From the liner notes by Marco Angius: “With an ever broader and more variegated catalogue, Giorgio Battistelli continues to renew (and to shake) contemporary musical theatre. Right from the beginning, with the very famous Experimentum Mundi, Battistelli has accepted and surpassed the legacy of the Moment-Form of Stockhausen and of certain post-modernist orientations of Kagel.”

From the liner notes by Pierluigi Basso Fossali: “There are certain attitudes that can be clearly felt in Marco Momi’s music: rejections, privations, obsessive tests. The writing is solid, quick to eliminate the superfluous, but finds validation only through in vivo experimentation with the rendering of sound, that is, with its potential for exemplification.”

Not even the recent edition of the prestigious musical dictionary New Grove mentions his name, despite the indubitable value of his keyboard music. Rodríguez was born May 1, 1760 in Madrid, although he studied in the Montserrat Monastery in Barcelona. After becoming priest, Rodríguez returned to Madrid, where he was an outstanding organist, preparing a book with organ works (the instrument came given by the availability of the church in which he was employed, although these pieces can also be performed with fortepiano, as this CD demonstrates).

This is the first CD entirely devoted to the Renaissance guitar. The instrument was probably invented in Spain, but it was in France, under Henri II, that it achieved great popularity, rivaling even the lute. Between 1551 and 1555 nine books of tablature for guitar were published in Paris: four by Le Roy, three by Morlaye, one by Brayssing, and another by Gorlier. The three first composers are represented on this recording by a selection of exquisite pieces chosen by our soloist, American guitarist and lutenist Michael Craddock.
