AV CLUB BEST OF 2014 “Bob Odenkirk rarely does standup, and though his comedy career stretches back 30 years, Amateur Hour is his first record. (He’s been busy co-creating Mr. Show, ushering the likes of Tim And Eric onto your TV set, and inhabiting the character of Saul Goodman on Breaking Bad, so it’s understandable.)” D

The Rezillos are a punk New Wave band formed in Edinburgh, Scotland, in 1976. Although emerging at the same time as other bands in the punk rock movement, The Rezillos did not share the nihilism or social commentary of their contemporaries. Instead, the group took a more light-hearted approach to their songs, preferring to describe themselves at the time as “a New Wave beat group.” Released in July 1978, The Rezillos’ only studio album Can’t Stand the Rezillos is now considered a classic album of the first wave of British punk. Now, the band returns with ZERO, featuring 12 blistering tracks of swaggering punk rock. Touches of everything from Blondie and The B52s to The Cramps are reflected in the music, although thoroughly energized for today! “Quite simply the finest ‘fake Ramones’ the world has ever known. Hyperactive tempos, raging guitar, abbreviated pop melodies, goofy and slightly off-kilter lyrics that display a fascination with junk culture and ’60s pop — it’s all there … A triumph.”

iVardensphere is one of the most popular current industrial acts. Features guest vocals and members of several other bands. Another Reybee will be working press. Extensive Facebook and Google ad campaign. Full servicing to press, radio, and club DJs. Track samples on Metropolis Records website.

iVardensphere, the tribal trance electro outfit headed by Scott Fox, presents Fable. On the new album, Fox and his cohorts explore all aspects of percussive tribalism, be it in the Middle-Eastern tinged “Messiah,” the electronic twitches of “Tribes of the Moth,” or the progressive trance influence of “Terra Sapian.” In addition, the droning, seething “Girl Without Hands” and the minimalist “Disir,” being constructed entirely of voices, bring stunningly beautiful new depths to the music.

Give was conceived at the tail end of 2008, and has rested very little since. Over the course of extensive touring and releasing two 12”s, a half-dozen 7”s, and a cassette, they have proved themselves as a band that is not content to rest, either physically or artistically. Sonically, they reference that sweet spot of exploration where the freshman class of Revelation artists dared to trespass in their later daze. For those who want to go beyond the tangible to achieve the eternal high, we direct you to your new favorite band: Give. Raised and educated by wolves in the wilds of Virginia, Hampton Yount now resides in Los Angeles, a shell of his former lupine self. His comedy is very, very silly, and should not be handled lightly. “A really great joke writer. Stylistically, he’s not the same as Paul F. James and the Ultrasounds are not necessarily typical of the Memphis garage rock scene, though they do owe plenty to that tradition. Having played bass with influential Grifters duo Dave Shouse and Scott Taylor in The New Mary Jane, as well as with local luminaries Jack Oblivian and John Paul Keith, James Godwin has been a Memphis staple for years. It wasn’t until 2012, however, that he assembled a band to perform material he had conceived for a solo project. After selfrecording the Lovers and Ghosts EP and releasing it under the moniker James and the Ultrasounds, Godwin filled out his band with drummer John Argroves (John Paul Keith, Jack Oblivian, The New Mary Jane), guitarist Luke White (Colour Revolt, Snowglobe, The Coach and Four), and bassist David Johnson (Dead Phones, Time).

German instrumental duo Sankt Otten, founded in 1999, consists of Stephan Otten (drums, programming, synthesizer) and Oliver Klemm (guitar, synthesizer, piano). The duo has been releasing albums on Denovali Records since 2009. Their eighth album, Engtanz Depression (“close dance depression”), expresses a significant progression from the preceding album trilogy (Gottes Synthesizer, Sequencer Liebe, Messias Maschine). New drum sounds and acoustic instruments such as harmonium and piano may be found, and some pieces emerged from free improvisations, which is a completely new approach for this band. 180-gram heavyweight vinyl with free download code, thick matte cover, and printed inner sleeve. Second Moon of Winter is a new experimental ensemble from Ireland that melts gloomy, discordant ambiences with luminous soprano. Their first project, a six-track album called One for Sorrow, Two for Joy, was written and recorded live in a series of fourhour sessions in a basement by the sea in County Cork in the south of Ireland: no computers, no playback of samples, no overdubs, no further processing after the event. 180-gram heavyweight vinyl with free download code, thick matte gatefold cover, and black polylined inner sleeve. Following the interstellar proportions of 2013’s A Sun Spinning Backwards, Dust Songs imagines a world beyond the event horizon of its predecessor, where a generation has come and gone from a familiar earth. Eroded post-folk stories of an unknown world, layers of debris, and fractured song cycles riding broken transmissions. Electronic pulses, warped guitar loops, and blankets of drone, above a constant undertow of dark matter. SIDE A: Deep Black Static • By the Meadow • SIDE B: Silver Minds • Keepers • SIDE C: My Father, My Mother • Shadows • SIDE D: The Silver World • Morning Star

Ricardo Donoso Saravá Exu

Genre: Avant Rock Label: Denovali Records VINYL: DNV 223 Price Code: 2O (SRP $27.99) Number of Discs: 1 Gatefold LP Jacket, Box Lot 50 Street Date: 3/10/15 D

U.S. ORDERS ONLY

180-gram heavyweight vinyl with free download code, thick matte gatefold cover with special 3-D print, and black polylined inner sleeve. Certainly Donoso’s most ambitious and challenging undertaking to date, Saravá Exu is a symphonic poem of a Brasilian Quimbanda cult ritual, and the musical accompaniment of descent into one’s own personal hell. In contrast with the continual pursuit of achievement that today’s culture teaches us, the theme of “descent,” found in many myths in the shape of the hero going underground to pass a period of solitude, is no longer represented. A cultural space existed in most traditional societies for such a period in a person’s life and it was seen as necessary in order for the initiate to re-connect with their past and concomitantly with his collective unconscious, or humanity’s primordial existence. SIDE A: Crepusculum • Vesperum • Conticinium • Intempestiva • SIDE B: Gallicinium • Matutinum • Diluculum

STREET DATE MARCH 10, 2015

180-gram heavyweight vinyl with free download code, thick matte cover, and printed inner sleeve. Considered by many in underground circles to be a true masterwork of the dark ambient genre, Deterrence is often compared to works by artists such as Biosphere, Lustmord, and Deathprod. Ricardo Donoso is a composer, percussionist, and electronic musician from Rio de Janeiro who currently resides in Boston. He has participated in a slew of projects over the years, notably playing drums for avant-death metal unit Ehnahre and being half of the ever-morphing electronic duo Perispirit. Ricardo’s musical vocabulary draws as much from contemporary composition and drone as it does from techno and noise.

After a six-year wait since their last opus, Cyclic Law is proud to present a new masterpiece from one of Sweden’s most notorious acts. Karjalan Sissit wants you dead … and after listening to these new tracks you might not cease to exist, but you will definitely feel the sheer brutality they exude. Intense, bitter, and heavier than ever, this new work is the epitome of the Karjalan Sissit sound. Regenerator returns to WTII with their seventh studio album, Hunger! Throughout their illustrious history, the group has proven time and again their ability to deliver everything from ethereal e-pop songs to highly charged dance floor industrial. Although some modern electronica elements and other influences have seeped into Regenerator’s sound, their unique style has consistently remained intact. The formula of shared male-female vocals plays a prominent role on this latest release, with Wrex’s somber growling vocals working in perfect duality with Patrice’s sensual, breathy vocals. The new album includes 10 new songs, and Distortion Productions is proud to release the U.S. edition of this epic masterpiece. mind.in.a.box’s albums Lost Alone, Dreamweb, and Crossroads created a world of electronic intrigue in a twisting, dark world. The group garnered praise from critics for their innovative, hard-to-categorize sound and story concepts. Instead of simply creating songs, mind.in.a.box pulls you into its world and its stories, and the arc continues on the new album Memories as we are taken once again into the dystopian world of Mr. Black and the mystery of the Dreamweb. The band uses the narrative to further explore themes of solitude, fear, self-control, ego, and loss. With the dense, complex electronics MIAB is known for, the band masterfully creates moods and mixes them with highly danceable tracks to create a complex musical journey. Track Listing: Travel Guide • I Knew • Unforgiving World • No Hope • Synchronize • Bad Dreams • Silent pain • Timelessness • Face It • Up There • Pedro • Shake-Up • 5ynchr0ni7e Key Markets: Los Angeles, San Francisco, Seattle, Portland, Las Vegas, Boise, St. Paul, Minneapolis, Kansas City, Washington DC, Philadelphia, Boston, New York, Toronto, Cleveland, Chicago, Nashville, Atlanta, Houston, Dallas, San Francisco, Portland, Seattle, Dallas, Miami, Atlanta

After leaving his former band Those Transatlantics, multi-instrumentalist and composer Chris Hatfield grouped up with guitarist Erik Cline, bassist Joelle Barrios (Pagan Saints), and drummer Mike Ambs (Burning Brides, Marah) to form the current lineup for Love Axe, based in Los Angeles. The band’s character resides in a pop-music space with melodies and transitions that ring with a composer’s artistry — the songs are too advanced to be pop, but they are, and they’re really catchy. Yet throughout, there’s a scratch at the darker side ... like a charmingly apocalyptic OKCupid profile. Track Listing: Baby to Bed • Only Gonna Tear You Apart • Such a Waste of a Good Thing • Please • All That’s Gold Will Turn To Black (Part 2) • The Water • Irresponsible • Daughter of a Diplomat • Microwave • Ghosts • Stephanie at the Dawn of Time (Bonus Track) Key Markets: Hometown: Los Angeles. • Missing for 40 years, this is the first reprint of rare Cambodian psych-pop album Drakkar 74! • A rare slice of history, available on vinyl for the first time ever! • Collectors and researchers have been searching for the masters for this album for over a decade, and the band is featured in John Pirozzi’s documentary on Cambodian music, Don’t Think I’ve Forgotten. • Includes digital download card with four bonus tracks! • Advance feature in The Big Takeover. • College radio servicing and follow-up. • RIYL: Dengue Fever, Cambodian Space Project.

The Holy Grail of missing pre-Khmer Rouge Cambodian psychedelic pop rock! This album was recorded live on a four-track in 1973, and released on cassette in Cambodia just months before the Khmer Rouge took over. Now, this rare slice of history is available on vinyl for the first time ever, in a limited edition of 500 copies with full-color sleeve and extensive notes. “Listen and be amazed … A musician’s life can be tough, we know. But we’d be willing to bet that most musicians reading this never had their master tapes destroyed by a genocidal, totalitarian regime. Yet that’s exactly what happened to Drakkar, who went from releasing the biggest-selling album in Cambodian history to having all trace of their existence — photos as well as music — eradicated by the brutal Khmer Rouge.” — THE BIG TAKEOVER “If this was a golden age of Cambodian music, it’s perhaps because of the coming together of singers steeped in traditional vocal techniques, with busy professional musicians attuned to the new sounds heard from U.S. Armed Forces Radio, just across the border in Vietnam. The fluttering vocal line, baroque with strange yodels and ornaments, those gentle saxes and clarinets, exotic organ solos, the crisp beat combo drum kit – there’s a tropical sweetness here that’s hard to resist.” — THE WIRE
