Sonatas

Pianist Alexandra Silocea joins with fellow Romanian cellist Laura Buruiana in two Russian staples of the repertory — the Sonatas of Prokofiev and Shostakovich — along with a much rarer offering by compatriot George Enescu: the single-movement Sonata in F minor, an early work that only recently came to light. Silocea has distinguished herself on previous AVIE releases in repertoire ranging from Debussy and Ravel to Liszt and, notably, Prokofiev. Among Buruiana’s distinctions is first prize in the New York-based Young Concert Artists competition in 2003, and a PhD summa cum laude from the National University of Music in Bucharest, where she devoted her thesis to the Enescu F minor Sonata.

Among today’s most notable Handel specialists, the group’s founder, cellist Tatty Theo, and harpsichordist, Carolyn Gibley, turn their attention for only the second time to the music of J.S. Bach as well as his son Carl Philip Emmanuel. Like father, like son, each wrote three Sonatas for viola da gamba and harpsichord. These works have long been a valued part of the cello repertoire, but this recording is the first to make use of a regular four-string baroque cello.

The works on this album, among the favorites in Mahler’s repertoire, are given a new, fresh dimension in these chamber arrangements. Clare Gormley shines as the soprano soloist in the final movement of the fourth symphony, perfectly capturing a childlike vision of paradise, while Jeffrey Black brings wonderful passion to the varied emotions of the four movements of Songs of a Wayfarer. The Sydney Soloists give a wonderful performance, adapting to these pared-back versions with perfect precision, delicacy, and feeling.

Elbipolis Baroque Orchestra Hamburg Jürgen Gross: conductor DELALANDE: Première Caprice, Caprice de Villers-Cotterets • Première Suite • Troisème Suite • Cinquième Suite • Grande piece en G re sol In these new reconstructions of Delalande’s all-too-rare “table music” for the French court of Louis XIV — on CD for the first time — the music is performed in the original five-part textures and on period instruments. Immediately after starting in his post as Superintendent of the House Music in 1689, Delalande began composing instrumental movements. These suites were chiefly intended for the king’s suppers which, in reality, were “performances” before an audience. It was an honor to be allowed to watch the king eat, a greater honor to be spoken to during the meal, and a supreme honor to be invited to serve him his food or eat with him. In this context, instrumental music played an important role, its magnificence reflecting the regent’s powerful self-image. Since new works were continually being demanded, this practice resulted, over the course of the years, in an impressive body of works.

The repertoire and performance practice of the classical avant-garde are the starting points of the productions, but the ensemble consciously aims to cross artistic borders. “Composing is a quest for suitable musical structures in which all parameters are controlled equally well. For me, music should touch the audience, overwhelm people and uplift them. There is a metaphysical force to music, which I want to use to create a form of communication between myself as composer, and the listener” (Wim Henderickx, 2010). BACH: Cello Suites “Hushed and flawless Bach.” — The Observer “He not only brings that dedicated scholarly view of playing characteristic of period instrument specialists, but he plays with such huge commitment. The Suites are performed on two gut-string cellos: Suites 1–5 on a Francesco Ruggieri from 1660, and Suite No. 6 on the five-stringed ‘Cremona’ cello by A. & H. Count Wilhelm van WASSENAER 6 Concerti Armonici

The set of Six Concerti Armonici for strings and basso continuo, published without ascription in The Hague in 1749, is such good music that it has seldom been out of circulation since, through its authorship has been a mystery until recently. The Italian violinist Ricciotti, Handel, Birkenstock, and even Pergolesi became candidates for authorship, but it wasn’t until 1980 — when Dutch musicologist Alfred Dunning carried out research in the library of the Dutch aristocratic van Wassenaer family — that he found an actual MS of the Concerti with a preface by the composer, the distinguished Dutch diplomat Count Wilhelm van Wassenaer, known and admired as much for his musical as his political talents. The Concertos’ range of expression and technique is remarkable, and the variations in style between movements mark him as a gifted and original musician. Above all, it is the beauty of these works and the composer’s uniquely individual voice that continue to earn them a high place among the instrumental music of the early 18th century. Candidate for Classic FM Radio’s “CD of the Week.” Review Copies to media, including Early Music press and BBC Radio 3.

They inspired the composer to continue his work and he, in turn, dedicated his 1947 Ninth Piano Sonata to Richter. For Rostropovich he wrote an amazing group of late works, among which was the Sonata for Cello and Piano. Both the Ninth Piano Sonata and the C Major Cello Sonata are considered masterpieces, finding Prokofiev at the height of his powers. The two Sonatinas, Op. 54 are delightful miniature Sonatas, each lasting less than 10 minutes. The two illustrious artists featured on this disc, Donohoe and Wallfisch, partner each other affectionately and in perfect harmony in this recording. The Piano Concerto, the album’s centerpiece, was written a few years ago after a long creative break. The musical source of the Piano Concerto, as well as of the Four Pieces, are the 10 Studies for Piano from the years 1983–1998. Abrahamsen dedicates this program to his most important instrument, the piano, thus expressing his constant commitment to the German Romantic repertoire. Hans Abrahamsen creates music that speaks from the depths of the soul.

The Bridge Quartet’s new release celebrates the rich variety of the Phantasy String Quartet, one of the forms most characteristic of the English Musical Renaissance of the early 20th century and a genre re-invigorated by Walter Wilson Cobbett. The disc comprises six “Cobbett” phantasies, based upon the single-movement (but tripartite) 17th century Elizabethan viol “Fantasia” model perfected by Henry Purcell, including three sparklingly carefree contributions from the very first competition in 1905 by William Hurlstone, Frank Bridge, and Joseph Holbrooke. The remaining three, by Gustav Holst, Herbert Howells, and Eugene Goossens, date from 10 years later, composed during the Great War. Holst’s Phantasy on (Four) English Folk Songs is beautiful and nostalgic; Howells’s prize-winning entry from 1918 is darklytinted with an austere modality; and Goossens’s contribution, dating from 1915, loosens the bonds of 19th-century tonality and challenges the listener with more 20th-century sonorities.

Quartz Records Boris Andrianov: cello Rem Urasin piano SHOSTAKOVICH: 15 Preludes from Op. 34 • RACHMANINOV: Songs transcribed for cello and piano This album is a follow-up to Boris Andrianov & Rem Urasin’s criticallyacclaimed album of Sonatas by the same composers. The works have been transcribed by Urasin, who writes, “Soon after Boris Andrianov and I recorded the album of cello sonatas by Rachmaninov and Shostakovich, we decided to add a few of Rachmaninov’s romances to the repertoire … We were inspired to make the next CD a follow-up from the previous one, and to dedicate it to the music of the same composers. However, in contrast the second CD would consist of miniatures. As Shostakovich’s large musical catalog doesn’t contain any miniatures for cello and piano, transcriptions needed to be made. Our choice fell on the Preludes from Op. 24 (for piano), which are some of the most impressive pieces of piano music of the 20th century.”

ICSM Records Ivo Varbanov: piano BRAHMS: Piano Sonata Op. 1 in C major • Scherzo, Op. 4 in E flat minor • Ballades, Op. 10 All three of these piano works were performed at crucial moments in Brahms’s life; the Piano Sonata in particular was the focus of one of the most romantic “first encounters” in musical history. The handsome 20-year-old unknown from Hamburg presented himself at Robert Schumann’s house in Düsseldorf on October 1, 1853. Schumann invited him to play something, and he sat down to begin the C Major Sonata. “Visit from Brahms, a genius,” wrote Schumann in his diary. The Scherzo, Op. 4 was one of the first works Brahms showed to Franz Liszt, and to Schumann in 1853. Liszt found the piece so congenial that he played it to an assembled company at Weimar. Lastly, the Ballades emerged at a fateful juncture in the 21-year-old Brahms’s life, shortly after his revered friend and patron Schumann had attempted suicide and been confined in a sanatorium near Bonn. Brahms had thus suddenly been thrust into the role of protector and comforter of Schumann’s wife Clara and her children, and was simultaneously wrestling with the fact that he had fallen in love with her. The Ballades, his first group of short lyric pieces, are prophetic of the compressed masterpieces of his later years. Pianist Ivo Varbanov’s visionary choice of pieces is matched by his powerful rendition. This recording will impress the listener for its supreme sound beauty and the interpreter’s unusual choices.

This album is the first attempt to restore the sound of Chopin’s studies as the composer conceived them, not only by the use of a formidable Pleyel fortepiano dated 1839, but because the performer, Gianmaria Bonino, is a musician with a deep knowledge of Chopin’s language and, by extension, the language of the keyboard music of the period. If we add on top an extraordinarily clear, transparent, and closely recorded sound (the main aim was that the listener could hear the instrument almost like the performer does when playing), surely this CD is absolutely unique!

The repertoire of this album is truly fascinating. The great importance that instrumental music had in the late 16th century was continued in the 17th century. It was the era in which it emancipated from vocal music, and at that time the keyboard repertoire freely developed from Renaissance models: dances with variations, variations on vocal melodies or on bassi ostinati and tenors, improvisatory forms like toccate, and stricter forms based on imitative counterpoint, as ricercare, fantasia, canzona, and capriccio.

One of the key moments in the history of this fascinating CD happened in 2010 when the Chief Curator of the Music Museum of Barcelona called on Xavier Díaz-Latorre to make a choice from among ten instruments that he had previously selected. Those chosen would be restored and then used in the recording. It was an impressive selection of 16th- to 19th-century guitars that had not been played in modern times, all in very good condition and all with interesting features that made them worthy to be selected. After a long process involving the selection and restoration of the instruments, the choice of a repertoire, the study of the guitars, and the recording and production of the CD, the task entrusted to him has been, in Xavier Díaz-Latorre’s own words, “one of the most fascinating experiences in my entire musical career.”
