MARC RIBOT’S CERAMIC DOG Press Quotes

PARTY INTELLECTUALS

“Marc Ribot’s new power trio, filled out by the remarkable versatile rhythm team of bassist Shahzad Ismaily and drummer Ches Smith, is his rawest band in ages.” — Time Out New York

Selling Points • Marc Ribot is a widely recognized original on the guitar, with wide fan support across multiple genres. Ceramic Dog is his first project that will appeal to his entire diverse fan base. • Ribot is a first-call guitarist for such musicians such as T-Bone Burnett, Tom Waits, and John Zorn. Recently, he was featured guitarist on the Grammy-winning Robert Plant & Alison Krauss collaboration Raising Sand. • Ribot is also well known for his work on a variety of film scores including Walk the Line, The Departed, and Everything Is Illuminated. • Pi Recordings will hire a nationally recognized publicity firm to handle outreach to rock and pop press. Jazz press, which comprises Ribot’s traditional support base, will be covered in-house. • Service to CMJ Top 200, NPR, and independent radio in-house.

Overview Party Intellectuals is the debut recording from Marc Ribot’s Ceramic Dog, a post-everything band combining the energies of two masters of downtown New York mayhem: guitarist/vocalist Marc Ribot (Tom Waits, John Zorn, Robert Plant, T-Bone Burnett, Marianne Faithful, Lounge Lizards, Elvis Costello) and bassist Shahzad Ismaily (Laurie Anderson, Will Oldham, Jolie Holland, Secret Chiefs 3). Also features West Coast indie/experimental genius drummer Ches Smith (Xiu Xiu, Secret Chiefs 3, Trevor Dunn’s Trio Convulsant). Ribot is a widely recognized original on the guitar, with influence across multiple genres including rock, jazz, punk, Latin, soul, ’80s no-wave, avant-garde, and noise. Ceramic Dog draws all of this, along with Ismaily and Smith’s indie/electronica experimentation, into the power-packed Party Intellectuals.

“A blast of sound that [is] variously ominous, crude, and sly. There were handclaps and Cuban montuños; there was numbskull punk and roadhouse blues; there was the odd doom-metal drone … Prickly but popular, with a mood both breezy and intense.” — New York Times ALSO AVAILABLE

GRAILS

TAKE REFUGE IN CLEAN LIVING Press Quotes “Grails’ Middle European music exudes a dark occult mystery few are capable of achieving. Like some East German ensemble of the early ’70s, their heathen Ur-klang combines acoustic guitars, banjos, and bouzoukis with drums and samples that summon up the Ancients.” — Julian Cope

Grails’ last two records have received Album of the Year accolades from a number of sources. • Grails member Emil Amos recently joined Om as replacement drummer for Chris Haikus. • Promotional mailing by Important Records. • Ads with The Wire and Pitchfork.

Overview The 2006–07 touring incarnation of Grails included good friend and drummer Ben Nugent, allowing Emil Amos to switch to third guitar for the band’s live instrumentation. The DNA of this “guitar-dense” lineup allowed for new types of songs and bigger melodies. In early 2007, the then-five-piece entered Steven Lobdell’s (Faust) Audible Alchemy to document the new songs written with this augmented sound, and the resultant sessions make up Take Refuge In Clean Living. (The group has since returned to the original four members). Opening with a nod to Syd Barret’s Pink Floyd, the album begins with Morse Code before dropping into one of the heaviest slow-burn grooves in the Grails canon. Sounding something like Hawkwind and Ravi Shankar scoring Bladerunner, it’s lysergic and earthy in a new way. The rest of the album moves from blissful Eno-inspired ambience and epic Morricone rock hymns to an unexpected take on a Ventures tune that returns the listener back to the very beginnings of instrumental rock music.

“Rock, jazz, free-form freakouts, droning soundscapes, plodding dubbed-up and out bass—they are all here, making for one of the most adventurous records … and perhaps, when all is said and done, one of the very best.” — All Music Guide ALSO AVAILABLE

DAN FRIEL Press Quotes

GHOST TOWN

“Burning with ideas, he has a knack for making his cheap drum machines, blipping remote controls, and preprogrammed toys sound like injured robots stumbling through a raging fire … Throughout, each track feels both organically real-time and inevitably prefabricated … an intoxicating friction, lit with the energy of bombed-out machinery and loose-limbed brainpower.” — The Wire “Strange and wonderful, and best of all, unlike anything we can think of.” — Time Out New York “You know almost exactly how much it took to make this, money-wise, but you’ll be surprised at how damn good metal-electronic-lo-fi-folk actually sounds.” — Stylus

Selling Points • Dan Friel’s Ghost Town has a rare sort of universal appeal that crosses scenes and generations. • Has played shows with Thurston Moore, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Interpol, Oval, The Evens, and Lightning Bolt, and performed in Glenn Branca’s Symphony 13: “Hallucination City” and with Damo Suzuki (Can). • Friel is a member of the band Parts & Labor. • Eye-popping artwork by renowned artist Shawn Reed (Racoo-oo-oon, Night People Records). • Promotional mailing by Important Records. • Ads with The Wire and Pitchfork.

Overview Ghost Town is the first full-length solo release from Parts & Labor singer/ electrician Dan Friel. Characterized by its anthemic melodies, complex electronic arrangements, and huge distorted beats, Ghost Town is an indie record the noise kids will love and a noise record that will inspire the indie kids to pick up some busted electronic gear and strive for immortality. Comparisons are tough, but perhaps if In the Aeroplane Over the Sea was sculpted out of distorted noise you might be getting close. Warning: if you plan on playing this in the record shop you work at during open hours you’d better make sure you’ve got plenty in stock. This is one of those records you can sell to everyone from the noise-heads in the corner to fitness moms looking for something to work out to. Dan Friel’s Ghost Town has universal appeal.

“Sounds like little else out there, a heaving mass of static beats, monolithic distortion, and bending, diving tones … a unique and uncompromising sound that ultimately transcends its limitations.” — Pitchfork

Selling Points • The first Cluster release of new material in quite some time. • Cluster’s status as a legendary German group is indisputable. • Promotional mailing by Important Records. • Ads with The Wire.

Overview Berlin 2007 was a monumental performance for Cluster, as it marked the first time that they had performed live in Berlin since their 1969 twelve-hour concert in the Europacenter’s Galerie Hammer. The performance was a massive success, and a soldout crowd cheered loudly for Cluster to return to the stage. Fortunately, the concert was preserved for posterity and is proudly presented here on Important Records. Cluster was formed around 1971 when Roedelius and Moebius left Conrad Schnitzler’s group Kluster. Along with Kluster, the group has had a tremendous influence on the development of contemporary electronic music. Julian Cope has placed three Cluster albums in his Krautrock Top 50, and The Wire included the first Cluster album in their list of 100 Records That Set the World On Fire. Along with Neu! co-founder Michael Rother, the members of Cluster formed the remarkable group Harmonia. Between 1976 and 1979 one of Cluster’s most frequent collaborator was Brian Eno.

Press quotes “From an outsider’s perspective the distinction between Kawabata Makoto’s various groups can seem pretty much academic, since they have each undergone continuous personnel shifts and they all direct their flightpaths towards the same general regions of interstellar lunacy. Nevertheless, there seems to be a special level of expansive, fullthrottle improvisation that Kawabata is only able to fully achieve with the Melting Paraiso U.F.O. at his back.” — Pitchfork

Duchess Says Anthologie des 3 Perchoirs Genre: Alt Rock Label: Alien8 Recordings CD: ALI 76 Price Code: Q (SRP $15.99) Digipak; Box Lot 30 NOT AVAILABLE IN CANADA

Montreal’s Duchess Says fuses the fury and intensity of punk rock comprised of screaming guitars, moaning bass, and relentless drumming with keyboards and the explosively sexy stylings of vocalist Annie-C. While the band may not be reinventing the wheel with their blend of electronics and post-punk, there is something breathtakingly original about Duchess Says. One listen to Anthologie des 3 Perchoirs will cement that impression. Despite the lack of a full-length release, Duchess Says has become one of the poster bands of Montreal, having performed at most of the major festivals in their native Quebec as well as representing Montreal at the prestigious Montreal showcase at SXSW. During this time they also performed alongside the likes of Depeche Mode, Sonic Youth, Juan Mclean, Dinosaur Jr., and Les Georges Leningrad.

Overview By now you’re likely familiar with the (barely) contained chaos of HEALTH. The band’s debut album (September 2008, Lovepump United) and relentless touring with the likes of Crystal Castles and White Williams has cemented their status as one of the most exciting bands in independent music—publications like XLR8R, The Fader, and Pitchfork agree. In addition to evoking grand hyperboles from every blog under the sun, HEALTH’s album inspired several other musicians to match the band’s creativity. They reimagined, recut, and remixed, and the result is HEALTH//DISCO. Featuring remixes from Acid Girls, CFCF, Pink Skull, Narctrax, and more, these tracks take HEALTH’s ethereal chanting, screeching noise, and gauzy atmosphere and forcefully apply them to the dance floor. The CD also contains an enhanced data portion with even more remixes from The Mae Shi, Captain Ahab, and others.

press quotes “The self-titled debut by LA quartet HEALTH begins deceptively, opening in complete silence … But once the band announces itself with a huge, reverberating crash, the album rarely returns to such quietude. Sprinting through eleven tracks of orchestrated chaos in a breathless halfhour, HEALTH mixes the bombastic pound of Boredoms, the skewed structures of Deerhoof, the tribal thump of Liars, and even the synth squirts of Black Dice and Excepter.” — Pitchfork “It’s a challenging, loud vision of rock, yes, but it’s not nearly as tough as it at first seems.” — NME [8/10] “It’s far too convenient to overlook the panoramic melody underneath.” — The Onion AV Club “HEALTH makes extremely pleasant noise music.” — Vice [Album of the Month]

nail welcomes cardboard recordsto its roster! Cardboard Records is an independent record label based in Brooklyn, NY and run by members of the band Parts & Labor. The label releases some sonically adventurous punk, rock, folk, and beyond. Releases to date include Gowns, Pterodactyl, Ecstatic Sunshine, Big Bear, Aa, and Parts & Labor.

Press Quotes “One of the best introductions to oddball music you could hope for … guitar melodies—guitar riffs even—arc above ambient sounds and substrata rhythms, built from an effects rack rather than a laptop — and the sun reappears from the sludge in distinctly pretty guitar lines that twist and swirl into a gorgeous finish.” — Baltimore City Paper “The disciplined timing and deliberate restriction to small tonal palettes recalled vintage Steve Reich, and a noticeably all-American strain (their unavoidable country roots) frequently gave the overall sound a vibe like a hoedown in a parallel universe. In this way, they tip their hats to guitar visionaries such as John Fahey.” — LA Weekly “They could actually be Ebenezer Obey discovering Lightning Bolt or a Rhys Chatham tribute band formed by subway mice, but whatever they are Ecstatic Sunshine have formulated a delightful riposte to the underground’s predilection for sweaty noise-offs.” — Plan B

Ecstatic Sunshine Way

“Still a perfectly apt band name for these two freaky guitar pickers … who practically snort sunshine and then shoot it out their hands.” — Paper Thin Walls

Genre: Avant Rock Label: Cardboard Records CD: CBR 9 Price Code: L (SRP $11.99) Digipak; Box Lot 30

“Ecstatic Sunshine is a group comprised of two guys who play guitars, but please note that it’s not just your average lackadaisical coffeehouse-style busking … it’s all about the riffs as the two players rip through section after section in their slightly math-like electric guitar fueled songs.” — Almost Cool

“While some might remember ES as a delicate, guitar-leaning project based in unconventional melody, the outfit, now numbering three members and only one on guitar, have moved towards a loop-heavy wall of noise that, while still maintaining Matt Papich’s bright, tumbling guitar melodies, seems to have become a band more concerned with textures and intensity.” — Impose

Selling Points • Have toured with Dan Deacon, White Williams, and Parts & Labor. • The Baltimore music scene has recently received national media attention, including an article in Spin. • Radio mailing through AAM. • Press campaign by Solid PR.

Overview The second full length by Ecstatic Sunshine is an album of skewed minimalism and true, uplifting positivity. Recorded in Summer/Fall 2007, Way stretches to a point fully beyond expectation. The riffs that ES explored in the past are deconstructed, reconsidered, effected, and processed into melodic noise and chiming rhythm.

nail welcomes esperanza plantation to its roster! Founded in 2003, Mississippi-based Esperanza Plantation has established itself in the independent music world as a strong and diverse voice for the “New South.” Esperanza’s roster is highly eclectic in nature, but unified in its promotion of the label’s ethos of hope. From the sweeping soundscapes of Questions In Dialect and the angular indie rock of Bear Colony to the piano pop stylings of Allie Peden and the brooding folk tinge of Wooden Finger, the music of Esperanza Plantation speaks great volumes through a colorful variety of voices.

Press Quotes “Without Vincent Griffin’s dramatic back story, Bear Colony’s We Came Here To Die is still a compelling and engaging collection of songs created at the crossroads of emo and electronica, but considering its difficult birth, the album becomes a statement of the artist’s ability to transcend physical challenges and the overwhelmingly redemptive nature of music itself.” — Amplifier “These are some sweet tunes. I could easily see myself with a nice woman, walking between the trees around some kind of forest or something. Good feelings—therefore I like it.” — Vice

• Touring extensively in 2008. • Former featured MySpace artist and SPIN.com Artist of the Day. • Reviewed by Magnet, Alternative Press, Amplifier, and Vice. • Artwork by Grammy-nominated artist Jesse LeDoux. • Features former members of Lovedrug and Unwed Sailor. • Mixed by Jesse Cannon (Say Anything, Lifetime) and mastered by Alan Douches at West West Side Music. • College radio and new media by Pirate PR.

Overview No band in the Esperanza Plantation fold embraces “hope” with open arms more than Little Rock’s Bear Colony. If the listener follows the lyrics closely throughout their debut, We Came Here To Die, it is apparent that underlying themes of coping and healing connect each of the songs into a cohesive composition. The unfortunate inspiration behind the album came from songwriter Vince Griffin’s troubled experiences in 2005. Misdiagnosed with Crohns Disease, Griffin was bedridden for several months and began writing the songs as an outlet. The frightening uncertainty surrounding his condition spurred him to channel his frustrations into creativity, and the songs that comprise this debut full-length present a chronicle of the fear he endured.

Press Quotes “Allie Peden’s sacred/profane voice could only be American—as redolent of church choir practice in lemon-oil-polished pews as scratched blues 45s or stolen kisses in belly-high prairie grasses. Peden massages vowels like skin pressed to skin, fingers clenched fervently in prayer, or the slow crawl of a lover’s exploratory hand. She has an old voice, but the Nashville-based musician is still in her teens.” — Shake Your Fist “Allie Peden is an amazing artist in her own right … beautifully tragic.” — Listen!Nashville

Selling Points • A mainstay in Nashville’s performance scene, Allie Peden has shared the stage with Matt Pond PA, Jesca Hoop, and others. • Contributors here include Colour Revolt members Patrick Addison and Jesse Coppenbarger. • Currently recording with John Mark Painter (Ben Folds) for a 2008 follow-up to her 2006 debut. • Opening track is a Dolly Parton cover song. • Past performer at Cornerstone Music Festival. • Will provide press and radio campaigns in support of Peden’s 2008 release.

Overview Recorded when she was still a teen, the nine tracks of melodious, pianodriven pop that compose Allie Peden’s debut highlight the piano skills and vocal poise of a young artist creating the craft of a writer with twice her life experience. With This Love was recorded at Sputnik Studios in Nashville with the assistance of producer Mike Odmark. What began as a girl and a piano several years ago has matured into a full-fledged sound colored with innovative horn parts, jazzy guitar tracks, and masterful piano arrangements. She is now a band—making noise and being heard.

Press Quotes “The comparisons to early Modest Mouse are pretty spot-on so long as that’s not the last word. Pomegranates’ sonic template is much wider [and] their pop, poppier.” — KEXP Blog “This Ohio-based four-piece brings to mind visions of Transatlanticism-era Death Cab For Cutie and ’90s Britpop with their big, bright sound. The lyrics themselves are intelligent without being pompous or overbearing, drawing from literary sources that are mythological and biblical in nature.” — Amplifier “All the softly swooping melodies the blog-and-tunnel indie fashion victims love without any of that lingering aftertaste of melodrama. It’s almost as if indie kids learned to have fun again.” — Aversion “Pomegranates hail from Ohio and play a beautiful mixture of enticing styles … the band has a reckless and infectious abandon with their songwriting. Yet, all seems perfectly in place.” — Sound As Language

Overview After self-releasing the critically acclaimed EP Two Eyes, the boys put together a highly anticipated second release. Everything Is Alive, the band’s debut full-length, is pure pop ecstasy from start to finish. Drawing on influences like the Beach Boys and The Kinks, Everything Is Alive has been compared to early Modest Mouse. Melodic guitar lines, gusto vocals, unorthodox song structures … what more could a kid want?

Press Quotes “Is there any doubt left in anyone’s mind that Hocico is the best harsh EBM act in the world? They’ve got the aggression, the tortured vocals, the starkly modern programming, the beautifully creepy introductions, and to top everything else off, they don’t even resort to Hellraiser, Alien, or Full Metal Jacket samples … If you haven’t heard Hocico and you’re even remotely into bands like Suicide Commando, Psyclon 9, or yelworC, you should be ashamed of yourself. Put down whatever it is you’re doing right now and go buy this album.” — Grave Concerns “For those familiar with the Mexican duo’s brutal electro sledgehammer sound, this latest material continues the successful formula founded by the last few releases … dark trance merges with relentless electro to overtake the atmosphere.” — Sideline.com

“An album as incendiary and as decrepit as the city from which this band originates, making for a harsh yet honest effort … The beats are blistering, the vocals are venomous, and the subject matter is as uncomfortably honest and real as ever.” — ReGen Magazine

Selling Points • US tour in June/July 2008. • 190,000 page views and plays on MySpace. • Highly anticipated sixth studio album. • One of the Top 3 sellers in the terror/EBM genre. • Last album, Wrack and Ruin, sold 5,000 copies in the US alone. • Promo copies sent to DJs, radio stations, and print media. • MySpace campaign with 200,000 contacts. • Ads with Vampire Freaks

Overview Memorias Atrás is a sonic trip to Hell … and, like two horsemen of the Apocalypse, Erk and Racso are riding high on thudding beats, solid bass, and sounds straight out of purgatory, unleashing an electronic earthquake at maximum power. The Mexican electro-maniacs have returned to the raw, in-your-face sound of their early days—only darker, more massive, and way more intense! Memorias Atrás consists of 12 striking club burners straight out of the abyss of human existence. The album is jam-packed with tracks that have the words “club hit” written all over then.

Overview After their highly acclaimed first album, this politically-charged band comes back with a second studio album, and revolution is indeed on the menu. Jay Sin screams, whispers, and harmonizes his message of rage and despair: “We kill for profit, destroy our planet for personal convenience, and it is about time to stop!” Mr. Sin is supported by cohorts who provide the sonic texture to support his vocal mayhem: dense keyboard layers mixed with heavy beats and pumping bass lines coagulate into a powerful groove.

Overview The Botticellis have an obsession with pop music, melodic songwriting, and the cinematic sounds of yesteryear, but they’re not lost in some oldies Neverland. On Old Home Movies, the quintet gives us ten luminous snapshots of sun-bleached memories. The vision is uniquely Californian, and while their music basks in the warmth of the Golden State as personified by the Beach Boys, it’s also steeped in the shadows and queasy uncertainty of Raymond Chandler. The band produced the album with the help of Anton Patzner (Bright Eyes) who plays violin on “Who Are You Now”; Matt Cunitz, whose museum of vintage keyboards colors the music; and Jason Quever (Papercuts), who plays drums on “Flashlight” and helped capture the band’s balmy sound on analog tape. Old Home Movies promises to bring burnished, finely crafted pop to the people, filling their heads with vibrant memories and California daydreams.

Press Quotes “Manages to take a million-and-one risks while keeping things subtle, understated, aesthetically intriguing, and emotionally resonant.” — Pitchfork “Much like the stateside phenomenon that has been questionably labeled ‘New Weird America,’ the current folk and psych scene that has cropped up over the last few years in Finland spreads its wings over a variety of sounds, textures, and styles ranging from the noise freakouts and mantra-like drone minimalism of groups like Avarus to more straightforward, singersongwriter based material such as the aforementioned Kiila. Naukkarinen’s work falls somewhere in between these two extremes, segueing effortlessly between abstract experimentation and gorgeously delicate folk harmonies.” — Dusted “Finnish folkster Laura Naukkarinen (Lau Nau) arrives just in time for the freak-folk craze, though her particular freak flag flies truer because she’s an outsider—she hails from a close group of Finnish musicians. Kuutarha is heavy on weird vocal interplay and light on audibility. Listen extra closely and you’ll hear an artist who’s begging to be heard … seemingly not of this world, yet very much grounded in its ancient sounds.” — Splendid “This new offering from the Finnish clan is a smattering of gentle melodies cloaked in the shambolic memories of the first buds of spring … something that transcends language and culture.” — Foxy Digitalis

Overview Nukkuu (Finnish for “sleeps”) is the long-awaited sophomore album by celebrated femme folk fave Lau Nau. Psychedelic, abstract, and emotionally captivating, Nukkuu is an album of changes. In the years since her celebrated debut album Kuutarha, Laura became a mother, moved to the Finnish countryside, and took valuable time to carve out a space for her enchanted art in the newfound tranquility of her remote surroundings. Conceived in tight attics and vacant dens when her young son Nuutti was fast asleep, this is an intimately crafted nine-song collection that unfolds like dreamlike musical ribbons for the senses and delivers the listener to a place of unhurried contentedness.

Press Quotes “A challenging and practically unclassifiable masterpiece.” — The Advocate “A compelling intersection of the cerebral and the sensual.” — Chicago Reader “A thoughtful foray into friendly improvisation and self-conscious spoken word.” — XLR8R “A soundtrack for walking home alone late at night.” — Village Voice “Draws on improv, hip-hop, electronica, and jazz to create meditations of dimensional sound and movement in soul. Recommended.” — Other Music “Daniel Givens proceeds with no rules of genre, form, formula, audience or radio programming expectation. The record is cohesive merely by having all the pieces there sitting together. Unification by self-declaration.” — Junkmedia “Most of the tracks are based around drum parts or looped fragments of drum parts played by Givens himself. Often, the loop is centered on an off-beat so the rhythm of the loop takes on a tumbling quality with no discernable time signature or downbeat. Other times, the beat steadily chugs but is kept by a seemingly random series of drum sounds. This unique approach is somewhat refreshing and comparable to few, besides maybe Tricky.” — Pitchfork

“The difference between the new album and its predecessor like that between summer and autumn. The days get shorter, the shadows get longer, and there’s more of a bite in the air.” — Pop Matters

Selling Points • Recorded and produced by Colin Stewart at The Hive Studios (Black Mountain, Cave Singers, Ladyhawk). • Fourth release on Mint Records. • US college radio service by Pirate Promotions. • Full US media mailing by Mint Records. • Blog and web promotion by Toolshed.

Overview With the release of their fourth record, Young and Sexy find themselves entering their tenth year as a band. Their expansive arrangements and heavily melodic sound draws diverse comparisons to acts such as Pink Floyd, Fairport Convention, The Zombies, Led Zeppelin, and The Go Betweens. The Arc is full of classical, baroque pop, and prog rock influences. Songs move from one movement to another cradling lyrics that focus on medieval and pagan imagery with a touch of spiritualism. The band that released Stand Up For Your Mother (their Mint debut) has now moved into dark and mysterious passages. Recorded and produced at Vancouver’s Hive Studios by Colin Stewart (Black Mountain, Cave Singers, Ladyhawk, Swan Lake), The Arc fits securely into Young and Sexy’s ever-changing musical canon.

Overview Almost five years have passed since the Ramblin’ Ambassadors’ critically acclaimed album Avanti, and now the band is back! This new release boasts eight new high-octane instrumental originals as well as covers of The Surftones, The Bel-Airs, and The Sadies. Vista Cruiser Country Squire explores the true core of the surf and cow-punk sound: stinging guitar lines, aggressive rhythm passages, and just enough laid-back West Coast feel. This is an album that balances tremolo and twang within an instrumental presentation. It was recorded live off the floor, with minimal overdubs, in their Calgary rehearsal studio by Russell Broom (Chixdiggit, The Dudes). Following its release, the Ramblin’ Ambassadors are preparing a split 7” with garage rockers Heavy Trash (Jon Spencer Blues Explosion).

The quartet’s self-titled album, recorded live at the historic St. Mary’s Church at the University of Pennsylvania, was heralded as one 2006’s best debuts by a jazz band. Critic Francis Davis wrote, “It’s been ages since I’ve heard a debut recording this adventurous and assured,” and the album received praised in the pages of Down Beat, The Wire, Signal to Noise, All About Jazz, and more. Let Nature Square is a giant leap forward for the band. The album documents the evolution of young players growing into their own individually and stretching the boundaries of a collaborative relationship. Overview After the release of his self-titled solo album and the ensuing tour, Adam Arcuragi began the arduous task of sorting through all the songs, sketches of songs, and half-songs that he wrote in the time since his debut was recorded in late 2005. The five songs that make up the Soldiers for Feet 12” were recorded during a break from working on Arcuragi’s yetuntitled second proper album. Originally conceived as a home-recorded documentation of his new material, the sessions flourished into a portrait of the artist in his most intimate situation—at home, with friends in tow.

Press Quotes “Guitarist/vocalist/songwriter/label boss Kaia Wilson has much to be pleased about these days. Her band, The Butchies, goes from strength to strength, maturing onstage and on record (last year’s 3 was their finest yet) into one of N.C.’s finest bands. The band is so respected that they’re nearly as high profile as Le Tigre, the biggest catch on Wilson’s nine-artist strong Mr. Lady label. As busy and/or satisfied as that should keep her, Wilson has also made three solo albums, and her new release, Oregon, is pretty much what you’d expect a sensitive rocker to do with her free time: an acoustic album. And not a bad one either—when Wilson raises her voice above the intimate, sweet, adolescent singing that may make you feel like you’re intruding on something private, she snatches your drifting attention right back.” — IndyWeek “Kaia’s latest solo album, the largely acoustic confessional Oregon, is an exemplary representation of the under-the-radar, user-friendly female folkpop genre … a solid, well-written, well-executed release.” — Pitchfork

“Kaia Wilson is both a musician and activist who manages to operate within the dominant music culture as a truly underground artist who is able to maximize her power.” — New York Times

Selling Points • First pressing comes in a hand-silk-screened cardboard folder. • CD comes with free digital download album of outtakes and rarities. • Current member of recently rejuvenated queer core legends Team Dresch. • Co-founder Mr. Lady Records (Le Tigre, The Butchies). • Promo mailing to radio, press, and web outlets.

Overview Lovely. Sparse. Intimate. Subtle. Hushed. Enveloping. Building. Cathartic. This is the record that Jealous Butcher has wanted to put out for years. All of the emotion and spirit that made you fall in love with The Butchies and Team Dresch, hushed and distilled down into this collection of 14 songs, the narrative of a girl being in love with a girl. Never hitting you over the head, merely giving you enough to imagine the rest of the story, and presented through deceptively simple acoustic guitars, a few electric guitars, some keyboards, and beautiful building vocal harmonies. Acoustic pop songs, country ballads, atmospheric anthems. The mood is up then down, sly then serious, confessional then playful. Kaia has been telling us about her life for 15 years now, creating a long string of stunning vignettes. This is the closest she’s come to writing a complete novel, and it was well worth the wait.

Press Quotes “A nerd fantasia, a robo-rhythmic onslaught.” — Metro Pulse “Ingenious, and brutally catchy.” — Knoxville Voice “After the guitars are finished dueling, they’re happy friends holding hands, sharing milkshakes from the same straw, and playing rambling, orchestrated Frank Zappa melodies.” — The Morning News “Blazing energy, abstractly hook-laden songs, and skinny, middle-class guitar soul.” — High Country News “Akron’s Audio Eagle Records has a spotless reputation so far after releasing three of Ohio’s finest rock releases in recent years … Now, joining Audio Eagle’s ranks is the label’s first non-Buckeye band, Knoxville’s Royal Bangs. The peppy, poppy indie rock fivesome impressed Columbusites last summer at Café Bourbon Street, and judging by the quality of the free MP3 Audio Eagle distributed yesterday, We Breed Champions … is just as impressive.” — Columbus Alive “Knoxville, Tennessee’s Royal Bangs may be the first artist outside of the Buckeye State signed to Akron’s Audio Eagle Records, but they aren’t entirely out of place on their new home. They share their labelmate Houseguest’s quirkiness and offbeat sense of humor, and label head Patrick Carney’s affinity for old style garage rock … easy rhythm and a vocal drawl reminiscent of The Strokes or The French Kicks … musically unpredictable.” — I Rock Cleveland

Royal Bangs We Breed Champions Genre: Alt Rock Label: Audio Eagle Records CD: AER 5 Price Code: L (SRP $11.99) Jewel Case; Box Lot 30 NOT AVAILABLE IN CANADA

Selling Points • Debut from the most talked-about Knoxville export since Superdrag. • On tour throughout Summer and Fall 2008. • Noisy, dancey post-post-indie rock in the vein of Modest Mouse, TV on the Radio, or Architecture in Helsinki (though Royal Bangs is better than all three put together). • Extensive service to print and web media, including over 50 music blogs. • Extensive service of CMJ-reporting radio stations throughout the US. • Ads with Magnet, Under the Radar, and Pitchfork.

Overview From Knoxville, Royal Bangs is a laser-fueled, turbo-pop destroyer of bad stuff; a musical group sent down from burger heaven. Previously called “like Radiohead vs. fifteen bottles of Southern Comfort,” “nerd fantasia,” and “awful” by members of the press. The band recorded We Breed Champions, their debut full-length on Audio Eagle Records, on their own. They sound awesome, like a wall of beats from a computer blasting dueling guitar wizards into hot dog hell, and sheets of red-hot synth slam dunk singing together as a dangerous old/new pop octopus.

All these are born contradictions that feed the music of Wadada Leo Smith’s Golden Quartet with energy and rare beauty. The music and the interviews are seamlessly woven together in a subtle manner, and the black & white filming helps one to concentrate on the musician’s performances. This DVD is part of the Freedom Now collection. Each film was shot on location at a performance at the Banlieues Bleues Festival, and total freedom was given to the directors, whose films challenge the conservative codes of shooting musical performances.

Press quotes “The Yohimbe Brothers once again deliver their eclectic blend of rock, DJ mixing, rap lyrics, and other elements … The duo, whose name is based loosely on an African herbal aphrodisiac, consists of guitarist Vernon Reid (Living Colour, Vernon Reid & Masque) and turntablist DJ Logic (The Anomaly). Their fertile collaboration began in 2002 with their well-received debut Front End Lifter, and the new music continues on the same path of experimentation with a modern trans-cultural and urban blend.” — All About Jazz

overview With his group Yohimbe Brothers, guitarist Vernon Reid (ex-Living Colour) joins forces with his New York buddy DJ Logic to create a fusion sound at the crossroads of funk, rap, and Latino rhythms. The film challenges the image/sound relationship using a VJ technique (in postproduction) that recreates the conditions of live multi-cam and treats each song with specific graphics animation. Press quotes “As the four pieces in the live program progress, the music grows looser, whether due to greater improvisation or the composer’s cleverness in suggesting such extemporaneousness never becoming an issue. Hailing from Toulouse in Southern France, this acoustic quartet has always proudly proclaimed its disorderly musical borrowing, blending, and appropriation of influences from other cultures. In 2001, Le Tigre [des Platanes] discovered the Ethiopiques series, and soon included some chosen Ethiopian pieces in their eclectic repertoire, interpreting them in their own personal fashion. During a trip to Addis Ababa, they met Etenesh Wassie, a husky-voiced singer who is perhaps the Abyssinian sister of Edith Piaf and Billie Holiday. The five musicians undertook the challenge of playing beautiful Ethiopian standards together, really exploring new musical territories and making the result a true sum of their personalities.

Press quotes “John Greaves is one of the finest voices in British music … runs the gamut from vocal caresses to near-shouts in superb ballads.” — Le Monde

Selling Points • Best known as a member of Henry Cow and for his collaborative albums with Peter Blegvad, John Greaves was also a member of National Health and Soft Heap. • John Greaves regularly tours the US.

Overview John Greaves is a bit of an enigma. Apart from his solo career, he has played bass with Michael Nyman, sung opera with Jack Bruce, collaborated with Robert Wyatt and Carla Bley, and played piano with Robert Crumb. Over the last two decades, he has produced a stack of albums strangely wonderful and wonderfully strange. The new French Dictionnaire du Rock allows him a whole page, yet in the British equivalent you’d be lucky to learn he was a part of the infamous Henry Cow and National Health, or that he continues to collaborate regularly with Peter Blegvad. overview Although his tent has been pitched in the Americana camp, Peter Bruntnell is a very British songwriter who has more in common with Teenage Fanclub than the likes of usual comparisons Neil Young and Evan Dando. Lyrically, he’s never been tempted to stray from matters close to home, and as a result he’s been praised for the succinct authenticity of his past five albums. The bulk of the songs here were written by Bruntnell and Canadian writing partner Bill Ritchie before a recent tour of the UK with Kathleen Edwards. nail welcomes KNW-YR-OWN to its roster! Knw-Yr-Own Recordings has been documenting the mysterious brilliance of the Pacific Northwest’s underground since 1987. Founded by the legendary Bret Lunsford, Knw-Yr-Own shoulders on into the millennium with a humble approach: do it yourself, record it at home, hand-screen it, only make 50 copies … whatever it takes to get the music out.

Press quotes “Bret Lunsford’s songs are bursting with likability, both in their easygoing tunefulness and the offhand, nonchalant intelligence of the lyrics.” — All Music Guide

Selling Points • Features members of the legendary Beat Happening and Microphones. • Exclusive album art and poster by artist Nikki McClure. • Hand-numbered limited edition of 1,000 with gorgeous hand-screened covers. • Extensive liner notes written by Phil Elverum and Karl Blau. • Doublescoop PR will promote the album to independent press, music websites, and blogs. • Feature interviews scheduled in Seattle Weekly and Pitchfork. Promo copies of the album will be distributed to various writers along with heavy promotion to KEXP. • Ads with Yeti and Arthur.

Overview D+ is almost more of an art project than band. After Beat Happening strummed its last chords, Bret Lunsford returned to his hometown of Anacortes and asked two of the towns’ most gifted musicians (Phil Elverum and Karl Blau) to join him in his new project. On Purpose compiles ten years of experiments, alternate takes, demos, and live tracks from one of the Pacific Northwest’s most important groups.

Overview The Jesus Chords’ third album (first on Knw-Yr-Own) follows the country-punk soul of their self-titled debut and the double-disc follow-up Country is a Four Letter Word. Steeped in the roots rock tradition of the West Coast in the late ’60s and the Pacific Northwest punk scene of the late ’70s, their sound draws comparisons to everyone from the Holy Modal Rounders to the Wipers. It’s hard out there for working stiffs these days; jobs are scarce, gas ain’t cheap, and there aren’t any good fishing spots left for hundreds of miles. The Jesus Chords make country music for the modern outlaws our country has left behind.

WHAT DOES IT ALL MEAN? 1983–2006 RETROSPECTIVE Press Quotes “Brilliant.” — URB “A masterpiece.” — Salon.com “Jaw-dropping. Perfectly paced, clever, funny, and down-right funky.” — The Wire

Selling Points • The first definitive Steinski collection! • Includes two discs, a slick six-panel digipak, and a 20-page booklet. • Liner notes by Hua Hsu (The Wire, New York Times, Village Voice, Slate) and Steinski. • Steinski has produced tracks for Sony, Astralwerks, Ninja Tune, Tommy Boy, Stones Throw, Antidote, and many others. • With Double Dee, opened sold-out New York shows for the DJ Shadow/Cut Chemist “Hard Sell” tour. • Tours Europe and the UK as a laptop DJ. Has appeared with DJ Spinna, Coldcut, DJ Food, Afrika Bambaataa, Diplo, Z-Trip, more. • Press, new media, and radio promotion by Fanatic PR.

Overview Steinski (advertising writer, DJ, and record collector Steve Stein) produced his first record in 1983. In response to a nationwide remix contest by Tommy Boy Records, he and partner Double Dee (engineer and studio wizard Douglas DJ Franco) produced “The Payoff Mix.” A panel of ten judges—including Afrika Bambaataa, Shep Pettibone, Jellybean Benitez, and Arthur Baker—unanimously chose the mix as the winner. Within two weeks “The Payoff Mix” became a Top 10 request on urban radio nationwide, but the release never saw official status and was subsequently bootlegged countless times. The Payoff Mix became the first record in a series now known as The Lessons. Double Dee and Steinski followed up with cut-and-paste landmark Lesson Two: The James Brown Mix, which Fatboy Slim called “the record that always gets the crowd going.” Then came Lesson 3: The History of Hip Hop. The series quickly became highly sought after collectibles and led to homage records by DJ Shadow, Cut Chemist, DJ Format, and others. Since The Lessons, Steinski has produced a variety of tracks, and this Illegal Art retrospective collects everything from his hip-hop narrative about the Kennedy assassination (originally a white-label promo, also issued as a Flexi-disk for UK music magazine NME) to the 1998 remix of Afrika Bambaataa’s “Jazz” with Double Dee. Besides the completist archive, the release will also includes the critically acclaimed “Nothing To Fear: A Rough Mix,” an hour-long mashup that was produced for Solid Steel/BBC London, described by Salon as, “the closest thing to a masterpiece the genre has yet produced” and perhaps the most obvious precursor (along with The Lessons) to Girl Talk’s Night Ripper.
