ACID MOTHERS TEMPLE & THE MELTING PARAISO U.F.O.
LORD OF THE UNDERGROUND:VISHNU AND THE MAGIC ELIXIR Press Quotes “Instead of taking the normal instrumental rock route of build-buildbuild-foundsound-build-build-build-build-cresendo, Acid Mothers Temple take a more subtle, even playful path, entering periods of long repetition, teasing the audience with blasts of feedback, looping back on themselves, then inexplicably skipping forward past logical progressions.” — PopMatters “It’s difficult not to be stunned by the music of Acid Mothers Temple … the playing, particularly from lead guitarist Makoto Kawabata, is visceral and gripping, shifting from gentle harmonies to ear-rupturing noise.” — The Guardian

Press Quotes “Few groups mesh together like Torngat, whose three-pronged telepathy for mischievous musical paths has fostered … a bold, animated masterpiece.” — Exclaim “Moody and spirited, this EP contains patient songs, comfortable enough in their own skins to make impressions on their own terms … simply a joy to listen to, a tastefully lush document of mature players allowing songs to find their own path and being rewarded for trusting their instincts.” — Echo Weekly “Montreal’s Torngat is a three-piece that employs French horn, melodion, xylophone, Wurlitzer, analog synth, drums, and trumpet to create music to truly lose yourself in. Nothing is forced, the timing is perfect, and the melodies are complex.” — Ottawa Express “An instrumental three piece that makes more noise than a small army … Imagine the most joyous moments of the Rachel’s oeuvre fused with the accessibility of Belle & Sebastian’s most spellbinding melodies. In terms of the excitement in the room and the amazed response of the crowd, it was everything Godspeed You! Black Emperor used to be, minus the politics and pretense.” — Splendid
Selling Points • Single LP comes with free digital download card. • Features members of Bell Orchestre and the Luyas. • Will be promoted heavily in North America via print and electronic media outlets as well as college radio.
Overview Montreal’s ambient power trio Torngat creates majestic instrumental music that is at times as breathtaking as the glorious Quebec mountain range from which they take their name. Now, Torngat returns with La Petite Nicole, the follow up to their critically acclaimed 2007 effort You Could Be. This time around, the band sports a grittier, propulsive-sounding record that more closely resembles its live sound. La Petite Nicole offers forays into dub-heavy elements of post rock as well hints of Krautrock and the occasional miniature freak-outs. Aside from these flirtations in new directions, though, the sound that has made the group popular in Canada and on festival stages abroad remains.

LOVE IN THE TIME OF RECESSION
Press Quotes
“Vini Reilly has always been a genre mixer, and here he plays with the usual suspects of folk acoustic guitar, soul vocalists, world music textures, scuzzy beats, sonic explorations, and his own melancholic voice.” — All Music Guide “Reilly’s music … has a timeless quality; it displays a definite sense of craft; it has no commercial dimension or mass appeal; it has a certain beauty; and it bears the mark of a distinctive, unique authorial vision.” — Dusted
Selling Points • Second album to feature new vocalist Poppy Roberts, who also plays electric piano on several tracks. • Service to press, radio, and television.
Overview The Durutti Column follows up 2007’s Idiot Savants with a brand-new album, Love in the Time of Recession. Written and played by Vini Reilly, with drums and percussion from guru Bruce Mitchell, this is the second album to feature new vocalist Poppy Roberts, who also plays electric piano on several tracks. Despite the tremendous critical acclaim that greeted his music, Reilly seldom performed live during the early 1980s. However, his reputation grew quickly, and by the ’90s Durutti Column’s legendary status make them a cult attraction all over the world.
The Durutti Column Love in the Time of Recession Genre: Alt Rock Label: Fulfill CD: FCD 64 Price Code: Q (SRP $15.99) Jewel Case; Box Lot 25 NOT AVAILABLE IN CANADA
Factory Records released Durutti Column’s debut album, The Return of the Durutti Column, in 1979. Produced by Martin Hannett, the edgy, primitive LP showcased Vini Reilly’s “honey wrapped in sandpaper” guitar playing and set the tone for twenty years of meditative and fearless music. Reilly has drawn on influences as diverse as Fats Waller and heavy metal, experimented with samplers and chamber music, and collaborated with other Manchester luminaries such as Morrissey and Peter Hook (New Order).
“If most rock guitar still roots itself in the earthy, wooden fire of the blues, over the last 25 years Vini Reilly has explored a liquid, airy form, notes bent by the other gravities and atmospheres of whichever planet Martin Hannett now calls home.” — Uncut

Overview The legendary 1972 Warner Brothers album, produced by Van Dyke Parks & Andrew Wickham, Hot + Sweet features the finest Calypso vocal recordings ever produced by the man known as “The Calypso King of the World.” The Mighty Sparrow’s career spans over 40 years and 70 albums. He continues to redefine the true meaning of Calypso Power through his amazing ability—not only to put into words and tempo the exploits of society, but to crown it all with showmanship and appeal. The Mighty Sparrow is Slinger Francisco, Chief of The Yorubas, who has brought honor, glory, and dignity to an indigenous art form that was once scorned by the elite of Caribbean society. He utilizes his medium not just to entertain, but also to edify, enlighten, and educate. “Recorded during a hurricane in Miami, the power of the wind and rain whipping the studio were matched only by the power and beauty of these compositions, chosen by Andrew and myself as the greatest in Sparrow’s prodigious catalogue.” — Van Dyke Parks
“The Mount Olympus of Calypso … It’s not just the good Calypso I like. I like the naughty stuff too, you know. My aides didn’t understand the lyrics, and they were too dirty for me to translate.” — Colin Powell

Overview It’s uncommon for a contemporary artist to create a timeless album, one that is both surprising and comforting. Yet after only a few listens to the new record from Weinland, a soon-to-be well known quintet from Portland, you’ll know it’s still possible. The characters in Adam Shearer’s lush songs are often tense, morose, and struggling, but they’re informed by a wry, celebratory hope. Their calm sense of knowing foils the emotional complexity in Shearer’s lyrics—that, and the gorgeously subdued vocal harmonies, atmospheric finger picking, strings, brushed drums, melodica, and subtle percussive minutiae.

After the dust had settled from the release of Roma 79’s debut full-length The Great Dying—as well as a smashingly successful European tour and some intense, soul-satisfying meditation at Stonehenge—the band members cast their gaze to the future: a new album. Epic and almost cinematic in mood, Praise the Divide explores electronic, synth-driven terrain while maintaining a constant focus on melody. The songs recall the artful pop sensibilities of Abacab-era Genesis, Brian Eno, Kate Bush, Peter Gabriel, or Cocteau Twins, rejuvenated for the 21st century.

The concept behind this series is to celebrate the 10 th year of the label with a series of releases that give an excuse to work with some of its biggest influences. Silver Shoals Of Light is quintessential Cindytalk, written and produced by Gordon Sharp and Matt Kinnison. For those not familiar with Cindytalk’s work, it is a sound that straddles several genres. Gordon Sharp was at one time perhaps best known for lending his angelic voice to several tracks on This Mortal Coil’s classic 1984 masterpiece It’ll End In Tears (4AD), but those tracks are nothing but a footnote in history. Since 1982, Cindytalk has recorded half a dozen fiercely challenging albums of devastating beauty, and there is no end in sight for this seminal group.

Press Quotes
“The bottom finally falls out, the shit finally hits the fan, and the rubber finally peels from the proverbial road and warps the pick-ups on the guitar that shape-shifts the song for its next three minutes. Mascis trading 8s through big amplifiers in an alley behind a German disco around 1973.” — Pitchfork

BARDO POND GAZING AT SHILLA
Press quotes “The Bardos, anchored by sibling guitarists John & Michael Gibbons, have been playing the fuzzed-out stuff of stoner dreams since the mid’90s, joining the frighteningly well-endowed Matador Records clan early on. Although their flirtations with melody have produced absolutely heavenly music, as on their quasi-dream-pop masterpiece, 1997’s Lapsed, they’ve always been allied first and foremost to experimentation, crushing distortion, and, of course, the drone.” — Pitchfork “The elements that made the Stone Temple Pilots, Oasis, and Live rich are there [in Bardo’s sound]: jangling, acoustic blues riffs that drag up dust along a country road, beats that lazily kick rocks into a river, and vocalist Isobel Sollenberger’s weary, murmuring tone. However, Bardo Pond’s trademark showers of intoxicated guitar distortion and gutbucket blues riffs still kick in after they tell John Lennon’s fairy tale, and then plead to go home.” — Stylus

If you’re still able to flip the record when the needle hits the runoff groove, you’ll find yourself exposed to the Goddess Kali’s naked blackness. Bardo is out. Are you in?
“Improv-friendly, sprawling, psychedelic songs.”— Splendid

Press Quotes “Boston-based altoist Jim Hobbs and his Fully Celebrated Orchestra combine vast musical prowess and playful, irreverent intelligence.” — All About Jazz “The band’s core instincts involve bold, expressionistic playing and drums with emphatic glee. These emotions are channeled through compositions that span a variety of moods: from relative calm to frenzy. Indian raga, free-form swing, waltz, ballad, Latin, and funk rhythms were employed before the climactic rave.” — Boston Globe “Hobbs is a solid sender, strong and powerful on alto, but it is his superb writing that distinguishes the set, his vision that mixes tempos, time signatures, harmonies, and timbre.” — Cadence

“The FCOs first gained notoriety in the rock clubs—or at least, it was the rock crowd that first created the buzz. Maybe that’s because the band are proponents of old-fashioned avant-garde inclusiveness: funk, Latin, blues, Balkan, and any number of ‘world’ melodies, scales, and rhythms show up in the FCO book, with plenty of free-jazz-collective chatter.” — Boston Phoenix
Selling Points • The Fully Celebrated Orchestra’s magic 7th release is a stellar collection of all-new compositions recorded live in studio and mixed utilizing the latest dub technology. • CD contains an embedded music video (playable on most computers), the extended skateboard groove and flex film Can You Do The Mackie Burnette? featuring cornetist Taylor Ho Bynum. • Service/promotion to national press, e-media, and targeted regional press by Improvised Communications. • Service/promotion to college and non-commercial radio by Improvised Communications. • Ads with All About Jazz, Signal To Noise, Wax Poetics, and Point of Departure.
Overview Long one of Boston’s musical gems the Fully Celebrated Orchestra started as a jazz band playing the rock clubs like the young punks they were, developing into the sages they have become. Following a series of European and self-released albums, for their auspicious AUM Fidelity debut their name has been shortened to simply The Fully Celebrated. Principal composer/band leader Jim Hobbs is an untouchably gifted master of the alto saxophone, producing a holy array of sounds from his horn that the instrument was not originally designed to manifest. Supremely skilled musicians all, and with a voracious musical appetite, The Fully Celebrated wield an incomparable arsenal of ways and means to transform the here and now through mighty song.
Press Quotes “Bands like Gay Beast used to get me excited, but none have had such a gloriously bent and creative batch of songs to match up with the innovation.”— Dusted “Think Health, think Lovely Little Girls, think DNA. But don’t think too hard. It wouldn’t be right.”— Sound & Fury “Gay Beast is one of the few bands I’ve seen around that are seriously challenging the form and content of modern rock music. Their compositions and execution are ambitious and effective. A truly unique and weird band.” — Weasel Walter
Selling Points • Available on compact disc and an astonishing 12” vinyl collector’s edition, extensively adorned with hand silk-screened sleeves and inserts. • Mastered by Weasel Walter (XBXRX, Flying Luttenbachers, Lake of Dracula) for maximum penetration. • Gay Beast will tour like the dickens to support Second Wave. • Press & radio mailing; web & social network marketing. • Ads with Signal To Noise, Skyscraper, and more.
Overview Hear Ye! Fear Ye! Join us May 26th for the coming out dance party of the year as Gay Beast rides the Second Wave straight onto the streets! Formed in 2005 and renowned as Minnesota’s premier agit-prog queer band, Gay Beast cuts a careening groove between the prickly corners of tunefulness and musical density, danceability and controlled chaos. On their sophomore effort and first release on Skin Graft Records, the trio lets fly with utopian visions of second-wave feminism, exposing a mood-swinging musical reach heretofore unheard. Join us as the nuclear family explodes into a psychedelic mushroom cloud of writhing, urgent vocals set against the precise, premeditated clatter of guitar, drums, and keys. Add a dash of electronic psych and a spoonful of sax, and your goose is cooked. Join us.

• Los Natas have developed a very loyal fan base in their 15-year career, regularly touring the globe. The band will tour in support of this release. • Recorded at Monsterland and El Attic, where the Cult recorded their most recent effort. • Received critical acclaim in Rolling Stone, Metal Hammer, Kerrang, and Alternative Press, and shared stages with Alabama Thunderpussy, Queens of the Stone Age, and Samiam. • Finished copies to press, radio, and e-media. • Features expected with Blabbermouth and StonerRock.com. • Music will be featured on various programs on Fuel TV, MTV, and more.
Overview When grunge ruled supreme, Los Natas were just finding their way out of the third world and into the underground. Countless releases (several on Man’s Ruin) have been scattered across three continents, forming the foundation for the reputation these Latin sons have created. Thick, heavy, psychedelic swirlings combine the best of the band’s two worlds: one foot firmly set in the heyday of 1960s rock fury, the other planted squarely in their South American roots. Produced by Sergio & the band at the Monsterland and El Attic Studios in Buenos Aires, Nuevo Orden De La Libertad produces a confident picture of a band coming into its own. Latin Heavy Psych has never sounded so fresh, or so familiar.

Press quotes “I’ll draw comparisons to the DC/Dischord scene, the Chicago ‘noise rock’ skronk, and the Amphetamine Reptile bite, among others—though the group’s overall songwriting aesthetic is somehow very fluid and tangible despite some of the jarring shifts and chaotic tendencies that seep into play on occasion … could appeal just as much to fans of Quicksand and Fugazi as to those of The Jesus Lizard and Failure.” — Aversion

Overview Some people will tell you there are only two types of people in Glasgow: lowlife punks in bad track suits, and pretentious art students. But listen to that false tale of two cities at your peril, because between the cracks in that hackneyed picture comes the sound of the city’s finest purveyors of candid indie-pop. The twins that front Wake the President were brought up on the hard-knock streets of Maryhill but earned their stripes knocking around the council libraries, drinking dens, and underwear-strewn bedsits of Glasgow’s bohemian West End. Lead singer Erik Sandberg’s songs—melancholy reminiscences of blonde girls, deceit, and the debauchery of the West End—resonate with the slurred poetry of old men philosophizing over whisky water. His songs of masturbatory melancholia move from optimism to despair, querying the existence of love but acknowledging the omnipresence of desire. Bjorn Sandberg, his quieter twin, provides the parchment upon which Erik’s witty commentary is scrawled, with guitar playing channeling the clang of C86, the fury of Josef K, and the jangle of Johnny Marr. And, underneath this thunder resonates louche bass lines and drums that sound like they could lead an army to battle.

Overview The songs that Chase Pagan writes are timeless in nature, and seem to come from deep within an old soul trapped in a young man’s body. After hearing his records, one can imagine him locked away in the confines of his mountain home, far from the mediocrity of pop culture as he paces the floors with guitar in hand. Pagan’s second album was recorded in Fall 2008 with Chad Copelin at Black Watch Studios in Norman, OK. His recent material is more upbeat and uplifting than the brooding material of his 2006 debut, released on the Militia Group label. Pagan is happily content with his station in life, snug between the walls of his mountain abode, and this satisfaction is reflected in his latest work.

And the cosmos has hatched a new egg of progression. The Neokarma Jooklo Trio is a wildflower in the Italian music scene, using cosmic improvisation and meditation techniques that gently hoover into musical religion. With up-tempo tribal percussion and trance-inducing Middle Eastern and Asian Gamelan influences, the group summons the ancient spirits of nature. Ethereal drones are woven to a magical flying carpet, then drenched in reverb and delay to dig deep in an emotional visionary barrel.
