PG. 6–7 Jason Bays and Colleen Coffey formed Ventura-based Beehouse Records in 2004 to release the records of their newly-formed band, The Spires. A mixed bag in the truest sense of the term, the Beehouse sound swings wide, from The Spires’ reverberating washed-out jangle, and Tall Tales’ Byrds/Dylan-inspired folk to the droning noise-guitar landscapes of Isley Banks and Deep Magic’s improvised ambient cassettes. Now up 25 releases and counting, many future plans are being hatched for 2010 and beyond.

• RIYL: The Clash, Los fabulosos Cadillacs, The Specials, Chicha Libre. • First release in the US after a very successful ten-year career in Chile, where they are superstars. • The group will embark on its first North American tours in June and September. • Chico Trujillo is one of the torchbearers of the worldwide Cumbia movement that is starting to make waves in the US, and is already in full swing in Europe and North America. • Can be marketed to rock and world music fans alike. • Publicity firm Pressjunkie PR has been retained to work on the release, focusing on NPR magazine shows, world music press, and wide circulation music and culture press.
Overview
Started ten years ago as an offshoot of the Chilean ska-punk band Lafloripondio, Chico Trujillo has become an institution in Chile, where their national brand of Cumbia is the soundtrack to every party. Their big band arrangements owe as much to the Cumbia bands of yesteryear as to rock and ska. They have shared the stage with every major South American rock band, including Los Tres and Los fabulosos Cadillacs, and they perform at every major Chilean festival where they routinely draw crowds of 50,000.

Genre: Alt Rock Label: Hush Records CD: HSH 93 Price Code: O (SRP $13.99) Number Of Discs: 1 Digipak; Box Lot 40 Street Date: 5/11/10 U.S. ORDERS ONLY
Collecting the first fruits of brothers Richard & Brandon Laws’ songwriting with the mellifluous accompaniment of Christof Hendrickson, this is a slightly warmer and more comprehensive introduction to the band (formerly known as Church) than their well-received Song Force Crystal, which in addition to their intense tour ethic and consistent presence in the Portland scene, helped Hosannas amass a sizable following. Culling from two short-run CD-R EP releases and adding three previously unreleased songs, this collection has been wholly reinvigorated with a much-needed mastering from Carl Saff and a song sequence that takes the listener on a journey.

overview
Strength recently toured with Starfucker/Pyramiddd and are currently at work mixing a new full-length in the Dandy Warhols studio. “Metal,” an ode to the cross-genre love affair, captures the inscrutable magic of a post-remix femme fatale with cut & paste imagery that moves through taunts and barks into a large, echoing rally cry. Falsetto is a collaboration between San Francisco dance underground stars Baron von Luxxury, Painless, and Loose Shus. Achieving a sound both menacing and transcendent, the A side uses phasing synths and a dirty bass line to propel paranoid verses of psychedelic funk into a pulsating chorus of uptempo house. The B side, a remix by producer Loose Shus, crystallizes the warped hypnosis of “San Francisco Nights” into a lean, dark dance track, stripping away washes of texture to reveal a clean interstate soundtrack.

Tall Tales & The Silver Lining is the reified vision of singer/songwriter Trevor Beld-Jimenez. The Understanding, the band’s third release on Beehouse Records, is the result of months of writing and recording. Tall Tales’ sound can be described as an amalgam of Americana Revivalist and sun-soaked, multiinstrumental experimentation with a focus on ethereal yet rationalized lyrics surrounding the themes of love, nature, and friendship.

Franklin For Short hails from Ventura, California, a quiet little beach town 75 miles north of L.A. Living off a diet of burritos, coastal fog, and reverb, the result is a 14-song epic that winds its way through a landscape half ethereal and half earthbound. The band has been touring on this, their latest release, for the past year and a half.

Genre: Alt Rock Label: Boompa Records CD: BPA 37 Price Code: Q (SRP $15.99) Number Of Discs: 1 Ecosleeve; Box Lot 150 Street Date: 5/11/10 U.S. ORDERS ONLY
Christopher Smith’s songs have that timeless sound that makes you nostalgic for days gone by—days both you and Smith are too young to have even known. The dreams and reflections he relays in song were recorded almost exclusively in bedrooms, a natural environment for such lovely reveries. With a dreamlike intimacy, he sings love songs so soft and gentle they could be adult lullabies.

Genre: Indie Pop Label: Boompa Records CD: BPA 38 Price Code: G (SRP $8.99) Number Of Discs: 1 Ecosleeve; Box Lot 150 Street Date: 5/11/10 U.S. ORDERS ONLY
Moths is pulled together from a number of Salteens recording sessions that took place during 2007 and 2008. Amidst several attempts at completing a fulllength album, the band was taken off task by numerous personal upheavals, artistic misdirects, and an appearance on Yo Gabba Gabba—clearly a confusing time. The songs assembled here are a document of songwriter Scott LD Walker’s angers and frustrations, and a typically Salteens-like call to arms in attempt to overcome life’s hardships.

Overview
It is too simplistic to categorize William Hooker as a fiery drummer who constantly explores structure and genre. Rather, his playing is connected to an emotional world, and the world at large. Joined by multi-instrumentalists David Soldier and Sabir Mateen, the William Hooker Trio is both tender and thunderous on Yearn for Certainty.

Genre: Electronic/Industrial Label: Metropolis Records CD: MTP 655 Price Code: Q (SRP $15.99) Number Of Discs: 1 Jewel Case; Box Lot 30 Street Date: 5/11/10 U.S. ORDERS ONLY
A relative newcomer to the scene, Menschdefekt (roughly translated as “Broken Man”) is an excellent harsh electro act. Though stylistically the sound mainly moves between electro and industrial, the influences of genres such as trance, future pop, and gothic shine through. While the vocals are dark, aggressive, and significantly distorted, the lyrics are deliberately constructed to be socially critical and provocative in order to reflect the term “menschdefekt.” The human psyche plays a major role in the development of the lyrics, as do such topics as war, nationalism/fascism, murder, consumer consumption, and our wasteful society. Compelling electro rhythms are mingled with media samples, adding to a sense of insanity and absurdity in the overall compositions. With The Human Parasite, Menschdefekt has laid out its manifesto with driving force.

Overview
Throughout their 17-year career, Decoded Feedback has managed to stay true to their industrial roots while at the same time experimenting with various new sounds and techniques. The band has now returned with their much-anticipated follow-up to Combustion, entitled Aftermath. Picking up where its predecessor left off, the album is a striking barrage of hard-hitting bass lines, acidic synths, and distorted vocals, all fueled by emotion. Fans have braved the Combustion, but can they survive the Aftermath?

Legendary singer-songwriter Graham Nash’s emotionally charged solo debut Songs for Beginners was first released in 1971. The album was a hit, climbing to #15 on the Billboard chart and introducing the now-classic songs “Military Madness,” “Simple Man,” “Used To Be A King,” and the Top 40 single “Chicago.” Now, flash forward to 2010: Nile Nash & Britt Govea of (((folkYEAH!))) have assembled an all-star line-up of contemporary music leaders to honor and celebrate Nash’s first solo LP. The artists put a unique spin on each song, making them their own while honoring the timeless vibe of the original recordings. A few selections from Graham’s classic second solo release Wild Tales have also been recorded: Jonathan Rice handles “On The Line,” Tyson Vogel (Two Gallants) takes “Hey You (Looking At The Moon)” to another place, and Jonathan Wilson (Chris Robinson’s Wooden Family, Jenny Lewis, Elvis Costello) recreates the now-classic jam “And So It Goes (Music Gets You High)” with an all-star Laurel Canyon line-up.

Dynamic Stillness is a vast new work that has progressed over the past three years. The opening for these pieces was accessed through long periods of solitude at Roach’s high desert studio and beyond. The record reaches into a realm of amorphous soundworlds filled with a sense of unresolved expansion and mystery, blooming into cloudlike form. “A moving meditation on the quiet power inherent in vast spaces. Roach has come back around to the slow-motion terraforming of soundworlds that seem to go on forever, pulling skeins of light through layers of cloud to describe gorgeous imaginary landscapes … Dynamic Stillness is Roach at his contemplative best, a sure and silent guide coaxing us to follow him into the endless realms inside ourselves.” — Hypnagogue

Suicidal Romance makes entertaining and original electro-industrial, seamlessly blending male/female vocals and harsh electronic undertones with pop melodies. The band’s first song, “Cold Kiss,” received positive feedback and fueled the band to become a more serious project. With the line-up solidified, the band set about recording and releasing a demo, which quickly garnered the attention of Infacted Recordings. After several high-profile live appearances, the debut CD Love Beyond Reach was released. Now, for 2010, Suicidal Romance joins the Metropolis Records family for the release of Shattered Heart Reflections. This album sees Suicidal Romance creating a whole new direction for the band, playing more with modern sounds and leaving its more gothic style—and Dmitry’s depression—behind.

Australia’s Shiv-r is the new force in the field of dark electronic music. Consisting of Lee Bulig (music) and Pete Crane (vocals), neither member currently resides in their home country—or even remotely close to each other. Despite the geographical distance, the duo is in tune enough to write music as if they are in the same room. The key characteristics of the Shiv-r sound are haunting neoclassical melodies, harsh percussive club sounds, clean male vocals delivered in shouts and whispers, sparse rhythm guitars, and an overwhelming dark atmosphere. Metropolis was so impressed by their music that they are pleased to release Hold My Hand in 2010.

Overview
Echoing like a long lost Werner Herzog soundtrack, Totem 2 is a record of subtle meditations and deep electric hallucinations from the crystal caves of the Northwest to the orchestral desert portals of Turkey. Like a reverse dark side of the new age sound, on the Totem series Master Musicians of Bukkake perform ritualistic electric excursions into the outer and inner reaches, relying more on the electric power of psyched guitars, analog synth chants, and exotic heavy percussion. Outer space gamelan, dusty fuzz rock from celestial deserts, meditations of a deranged Krishna gathering, and the blurry acoustic guitar majesty of the Cascade mountains all reveal themselves here, in epic form.

Genre: Experimental Label: Important Records CD: IPT 289 Price Code: P (SRP $15.99) Number Of Discs: 1 Digipak; Box Lot 30 Street Date: 5/25/10
AUN’s bipolar output generally shifts between dreamy, lulling harmonic distortion and sheer gut-wrenching avant black dirge. VII is the latter, comprised of strong melodic and compositional sense alongside impossibly detuned guitars and electric power surges. While demented acid-fueled fiddlers torment the high ends, ghostly cowboy melodies and industrial strength psychedelia are time-kept by Michel “Away” Langevin of prog-speed legends Voivod. Playing an uncharacteristic strain of jazzy, motorik, and tribal rhythms, Away traps the surreal electrocution state of VII, which is complemented by a mystical and symbolic heavy Justin Bartlett adornment.

Overview
With Black Tar Prophecies 4, Grails reawaken the series that initially began the run of records that mapped their rise to the forefront of modern instrumental music. While recording their full-length with an eye towards cohesion and epic production, the Black Tar series affords Grails a backdoor to a black lodge where they can explore total head music. In this volume Grails combine backmasked Satanic tape collage with old Emmanuelle soundtracks, pushing them further in the direction of a classical Italian melodrama soundtracked by Nurse With Wound. The Black Tar material is conceived slowly, in between tours and full-length albums, giving the series its own experimental space and keeping its final sum unknown even to its practitioners. As before, the series’ format will consist of two vinyl EPs and an eventual CD version. Like the slab of black slate in the opening of Kubrick’s 2001, Black Tar is an attempt to bring the ritual act of music back to its original mysterious genesis, where the listener and artist both stare into a nebula’s electric cloud before it takes its inevitable shape as a planet.
Press Quotes
