i n +o ut re c o rds p. 4–7 In its 14 years of operation, this independent jazz label based in the university city of Freiburg, Germany has established a solid international reputation for jazz recordings of the highest musical and technical quality. Its founder and CEO, Frank Kleinschmidt, named the company after a 1964 Blue Note album by Joe Henderson for which he had a great affection. “Our aim,” says Kleinschmidt, “is to produce innovative contemporary jazz music recorded with state-of-the art fidelity.” From the marvelous live concerts by Lester Bowie’s Brass Fantasy and the all-star saxophone repertory band ROOTS (with Arthur Blythe, Nathan Davis, Chico Freeman, and Sam Rivers) to the unique, powerful musical messages of James “Blood” Ulmer, the non-conformist creativity of Chico Freeman’s remarkable Brainstorm group, and the intrepid vocal improvisations of the inimitable Urszula Dudziak, the IN+OUT catalog offers a fascinating variety of quality jazz productions that have won high praise from jazz reviewers around the world.

Former employers include hard bop pianist Horace Silver, tenor saxophonist Stanley Turrentine, and smooth jazz guitarist George Benson. Cobham has also appeared with the Grateful Dead and the Saturday Night Live Band. While he has encountered numerous ensembles and genres in the past half century, the Percussive Arts Society Hall of Fame inductee is best known for his abilities in a fusion setting … There is no denying the drummer’s ability to play in the pocket, and with this release, he has made clear his musical preferences as they stand in 2010.” — JazzPolice Key Markets: New York, Chicago, Minneapolis, Seattle, Los Angeles

The elder statesmen of No Wave, Punk-Jazz, and Harmolodic guitar styles is back, displaying characteristic sharpness and originality! • Whether James “Blood” Ulmer sounds more like Hendrix or Montgomery has been hotly debated for more than three decades—and his latest album on IN+OUT Records is certain to refuel the debate! • A power trio set with Mark Peterson on bass and Aubrey Dayle on drums. James “Blood” Ulmer: guitar, vocals, flute Mark Peterson: electric & acoustic bass Aubrey Dayle: drums • No Man’s Land • A Thing For Joe • Fat Mama • Eviction • Baby Talk • Maya • My Woman • High Yellow • I Believe In You • Backbiter “With its opening nods to Hendrix’s ‘Hey Joe,’ this new studio recording from the Carolina-born master of Harmolodic blues surrealism catches you out from the start, pulling you in with the familiar and then dragging it out from under you … For anyone who’s always sat at the milder end of the blues bar, this might well be the Ulmer album to lose yourself in, an album that reminds you of the love, hate, mania and, yes, blood that lurks at the heart of those 12-bar chord progressions.” — MOJO “One of the best guitarists I’ve ever heard.” — Ry Cooder “The most original guitarist since Jimi Hendrix.” — New York Times

Rooted in the tight tradition of the great Swing Era big bands, the star-studded cast of the 14-piece Sun Ra Arkestra blasts off into a new sphere of sound! • Founded in 1954 by piano genius, master composer, arranger, and mystic visionary Sun Ra, the Sun Ra Arkestra is a treasure of jazz. Today, it continues to provide essential stimulus and give future impulses under the capable and amazingly energetic direction of 85-year-old maestro Marshall Allen. • In September 2008, the group’s imperturbable spirit of freedom and creativity inspired about 3,000 listeners at the ZXZW Festival in the Netherlands. As Artist In Residence, the Arkestra performed on five evenings at the Paradox Music Club. Only one of those fabulous nights at the Paradox has been recorded! • Here, long-standing members like tenor saxophonist Charles Davis can be heard alongside the voices of the next generation, including Farid Barron and Wayne Anthony Smith. • The stunning repertoire goes from the roots of jazz to the apex of avant-garde. It is a blessing that this truly cosmic coup has been documented!

• This inspired collaboration spotlights the simpatico work of intimate jazz singer Ron Gill and acclaimed guitarist John Stein. Stein’s previous release Raising the Roof reached #2 in the JazzWeek chart! • Taking a brief break from his acclaimed international quartet, jazz guitarist John Stein chose to spend a little quality time with the wonderful jazz vocalist and well-known jazz radio host Ron Gill. Recorded, mixed, and mastered by Antonio Oliart at WGBH Radio Studios in Boston, Turn Up The Quiet illuminates the inspiration behind their longtime musical friendship while also emphasizing each musician’s strengths. • For his part, Gill adapts beautifully to Stein’s subtlety with a sensitivity of his own. His hushed, vocal romanticism makes a brilliant couplet to Stein’s accompaniment, especially on album highlights like Ellington’s ethereal love song “In a Sentimental Mood,” the dark and haunting “My Flaming Heart,” the wry irony of “Detour Ahead,” and the closing Sammy Cahn composition “Wonder Why.” • Eight weeks of national promo by Dick LePalm. First time on CD!

Deanna Durbin Spring Parade

Barbara McNair Front Row Center

In 1940 only 25 sets of 78s were privately pressed of the entire soundtrack of the hit Deanna Durbin movie musical Spring Parade, making this first-ever CD release the Holy Grail of original soundtrack recordings! These recordings have been digitally re-mastered from one of those 25 sets, and the CD includes the exploitation disc made by the studio for radio stations to advertise the film as well as transcriptions of songs from the film that Durbin made “live” for radio broadcasts.

For the first time on CD: 25 tracks performed by the multi-talented and beautiful actress/singer Barbara McNair, star of films like They Call Me Mister Tibbs and the first black woman to host her own television show, a syndicated musical variety series called The Barbara McNair Show back in 1969. This CD contains all the recordings she made for the Coral label in the late 1950s, making their CD debut. As the title suggests, the bulk of the material is taken from Broadway shows.

30 Tracks Include: Spring Parade Main Title/It’s Foolish But It’s Fun • Tatra/The Country Fair/When April Sings • Czardas • A Night In The Hay • The Blue Danube Dream • Petticoats • Stolz March • Bakery Shop • Charming Drummer • When April Sings • Valse Budapest • When April Sings • Waltzing In The Clouds

“All the Rivers Gold is Terry Oldfield’s take on Celtic atmospheres and passion. He has proven to be adept at performing in many worldbeat styles; this effort is strong also. Oldfield covers traditional Celtic styles on pipes and strings. He augments those elements with deep atmospheric electronics, nature samples, and sweet vocal accompaniment. The sound design and mix incorporate the vocals as another instrument. Oldfield, per his modus operandi, has added his own flair to a traditional style of music. La Compagnia Sacco di Ceriana Italy: Vocal Polyphonies from Liguria

Kamilya Jubran & Werner Hasler WANABNI

In the Ligurian pre-Alps of the San Remo valley, a very rich and original musical tradition has been carried on in the village of Ceriana. Its most significant form is a three-voice polyphony where the two higher voices are soloists, and the lower one is a drone performed by a large number of singers. This form of polyphony is suited for both the liturgical repertoire—the musical territory of the four brotherhoods in the village—and secular songs. The members of la Compagnia Sacco have been championing this tradition with enthusiasm and sensitivity, taking care to retain its most fragile aspects and authentic songs and not to violate its essence.

The encounter of two worlds: Palestinian poetry and Arabic music for Kamilya Jubran, jazz and electronics for Swiss trumpeter Werner Hasler. The result is outstanding, with a new language comprised of both cultures that illustrates the harsh and desperate words of contemporary poets.

Track Listing: ‘E tre figliete • ‘A barbiera • ‘A Pinota • En ta valle da Pigna • La figlia d’in paisan • Donna lombarda • Maire fiurentina • Barcaiolo • Stanotte in sogno • La Marietta • Lenga serpentina • Dund l’è la mia morosa? • ‘U mese du granu

This is essential listening for all world music fans! • Since 1979 Dramé has appeared at many festivals in Europe and North America, as well as in his native Africa. He has made several recordings, and he is one of the very few African drummers who lead a solo career. • Dramé’s exceptional improvisations here show how African tradition influences contemporary music. Adama Dramé: djembe Track Listing: B.Mondet • Dougouda Dya • Barra • Abounaye • Solo Sandia • Sabouyouma • Djembe • Badina • Elodia • Layana “Under the hands of a gifted player, the jembé covers a wide sonic range, from high-pitched cracks and barely audible wisps to warm, low thumping bass tones and everything in between. Under the hands of distinguished jembé master and sixth-generation Dyeli griot Adama Dramé, these sounds are articulated through an incredibly sophisticated rhythmic vocabulary.” — All Music Guide Key Markets: Los Angeles, San Francisco, Portland, Seattle, New York, Boston, Philadelphia, Chicago, Washington DC, Miami Also Available PLS 141143 (J) Drums from Mali (3700089411434) PLS 141155 (J) Congo Drums (3700089411557)

• The young virtuoso Iosif Ioan Liviu shows here that he is a worthy successor to famous players such as Gheorghe Zamfir and Simion Stanciu. On this album we find all the magic of the "king of Romanian folk instruments," accompanied by the musicians of the Crai Nou Ensemble. • The Crai Nou Folk Ensemble was formed in 1965. The ensemble is composed mainly of students from the Brasov Conservatory (dancers plus a group of musicians), whose talent is regularly acclaimed by the international press. With its director Petrisor Varga, Crai Nou has won several prizes at folk festivals in Romania and throughout Eastern Europe. • On this album, the ensemble presents folk music from the different regions of Romania: Transylvania (central), Muntenia and Oltenia (south), Banat (southwest), Dobruja (southeast), Moldavia (east), and Oas (north). It includes slow traditional pieces (doina, rora, purtata, inuirtita) as well as very fast ones (sirba, hora, hartegana and joc de doi).
