After three years of development, Hypermusic Prologue premiered at Paris’ prestigious Centre Pompidou in June and, like Randall’s book … it manages to translate the impenetrable world of theoretical physics into something that not only appeals to scientists, but to anyone willing to look beyond the obvious for clues about the nature of reality.” — Seed magazine Harvard physicist Lisa Randall, Spanish composer Hèctor Parra, and artist Matthew Ritchie collaborate on a new site-specific monodrama, which inverts and renovates the genre of opera with an experimental score suggesting the expanding reality of a fifth dimension. The CD was presented in conjunction with the exhibition Contemplating The Void: Interventions at the Guggenheim Museum, which was on view from February 12 through April 28, 2010.

Zig-Zag Territoires La chapelle Rhénane Benoît Haller: conductor J.S. BACH: Passio secundum Johannem (St. John Passion complete oratorio) The St. John Passion is a drama of outstanding intensity whose edition was not definitively set by Bach. There were four public concerts that gave different organizations of pieces: 1724, 1725, 1728, and 1746/47. To convey the importance of this work, which goes far beyond purely liturgical purpose, Benoît Haller chose his ideal version from the four—the one he felt was the most “balanced, correct, and edifying.”

Meridian Records is delighted to announce the release of A Touch of France by the young and extremely talented clarinetist Anna Hashimoto, with pianist Daniel Smith. The album opens with Lovreglio’s virtuosic paraphrase on Verdi’s La Traviata, an exquisite Italian opera based on a French story, followed by Le Tombeau de Ravel, which Australian composer Arthur Benjamin wrote using the style of the French composer Maurice Ravel. The next three works by Debussy, Poulenc, and Saint-Saëns are very important French repertoire for clarinetists and classical music lovers alike. Debussy’s Petite Piece is a lovely miniature encore piece, and the sparkling variations on Cavallini’s Carnival of Venice close this album with a real sense of joy and excitement.

The output of Alfred Schnittke (1934–1998) has been documented in recordings more thoroughly than that of any other Russian composer since Shostakovich. But there are a number of works that have not yet been released on CD, and four of the five here are not only first recordings—they also document Schnittke’s stylistic evolution over more than four decades of creative activity, moving from the relatively traditional Preludes, via the serial Dialogue and the experimental Yellow Sound, to the elliptical Variations, one of his last works.

The Russian composer Anatoly Lyadov (1855–1914), a friend of Balakirev and the ‘Mighty Handful’ of Russian nationalist composers, is remembered these days chiefly for his Musical Snuffbox, once a favorite encore. Lyadov was indeed a miniaturist, but a far more productive one than his reputation for laziness suggests. His substantial output for piano, never previously recorded in its entirety, reveals a composer with an energetic keyboard manner reminiscent of Schumann, often colored with a hint of Russian folk music.

The two song-cycles on this disc—Cân y galon (‘Song of the Heart’), set in Welsh, on aspects of love; and Poésies du soir, which evoke the calm of summer evenings—share the songwriting clarity of Britten, whose early encouragement galvanized Walters’ career as a composer. They enclose the buoyant, Celtic-colored Little Suite for Flute and Harp, the expansive Violin Sonata, and the gentle Berceuse for harp.

The title Magnum Opus has always referred to the largest or greatest work of a particular artist. For Rex Richardson, this recording represents his entire evolution as an interpreter of new music, and as a composer. Featuring the work of some of his favorite collaborators, the recording demonstrates how a traditional form—the classical concerto—can continually be injected with new life. Dana Wilson’s Concerto for Trumpet and String Orchesta, written for Richardson in 2005, features an idiomatic language that stretches from Shostakovich to modern jazz and makes tremendous demands on the orchestra and soloist alike. Doug Richards’ Intercontinental Concerto for Trumpet and Jazz Orchestra, written for Richardson in 2009, is as vast in scope as its name would imply. In between the two larger works, Richardson’s own 016 Fantasy serves as a short but fiendishly challenging interlude.

THE BIRTHDAY BOYS OF 2010: CHOPIN, SCHUMANN & MAHLER! 2010 brings three important anniversaries: the bicentenary of the births of Frédéric Chopin and Robert Schumann, and the 150th anniversary of the birth of Gustav Mahler. Gustav Mahler composed sublime and simple music, but in his works those opposites are directly juxtaposed. The openness with which he wanted to “create a world from the trivial” made him one of the last Romantic composers, and a forerunner of modern music at the same time. This selection brings home how his songs—with or without words—found their way into his symphonies.

At that time, single recorders were used in mixed ensembles of instruments, but from numerous sources there is clear evidence that it was especially the homogeneous recorder consort that enjoyed an unprecedented popularity with both amateurs and professionals. The group Mezzaluna plays on copies of the most complete group of surviving Renaissance recorders, found in the Vienna Kunsthistorisches Museum. The instruments represent the great diversity of musical idioms offered by the recorder consort at the beginning of the 16th century.

Hana Blaˇzíková: soprano Peter Kooij: bass L’Armonia Sonora Mieneke van der Velden: conductor Works by Tunder, Meder, Weckmann, Biber, Bernhard & Buns The Thirty Years’ War (1618–1648) was the stage for bloody clashes, resulting not only in destruction but also a deep demoralization. This recording presents some of the most moving 17th century settings of Penitential Psalms and biblical texts. One is struck, listening to this music, by the depth of feeling on the one hand—a blend of humility, pain, and anguish—and by the power of the musical composition itself on the other. Seventeenth-century sacred music was not intended as an end in itself, but as a means to move the spirit of the faithful and render them open to the word of God and the message of Jesus Christ.

How would Mahler’s world have developed after his Tenth symphony? Could Claude Vivier have grown into one of today’s most important composers, if he were given a longer life? The fact is that many composers died too young, and it leaves an unsatisfactory feeling when a composer lets go of life in the middle of a tantalizing musical development. This problem is the same with Jan Rokus van Roosendael, who passed away in February 2005 at the age of 44 while his music was in a transitional phase. But this double CD offers a good representation of everything Van Roosendael stood for in his short life, paying tribute to the legacy he left behind for his fellow man.

Cello Works: A Tribute Jan Sciffer: cello/Hans Ryckelnyck: piano CELIS: Cello Sonata, Op. 6 • Sonata for Cello Solo, Op. 71 • VIERNE: Cello Sonata Frits Celis (b.1929) is an indefatigable promoter of both performance and study of music by Flemish and Belgian composers of the 19th century, and the first half of the 20th century. As a composer Celis did not aspire to be a modernist trailblazer, but what he achieved as a composer, teacher, and conductor is certain to make his name indelible in the annals of Flemish and Belgian musical history. His oeuvre consists of compositions in all genres and for all kinds of forces including choral works, symphonic works, and chamber music, for which his preference has increased over the years.

Piet SWERTS

Concertos for Guitar and Orchestra Wim Brioen: guitar/Slovak Sinfonietta, Zilina/Tom van den Eynde, Ivo Venkov: conductors SWERTS: Fantasia para un Marqués • CABUS: Concerto classico per chitarra ed archi • VAN LOOY: Guitar concerto Piet Swerts’ Fantasia para un Marqués is intended as a memoriam for Joaquín Rodrigo. Just as Rodrigo, Swerts’ exposition of the beautiful theme is followed by a series of variations. But his Conclusio is different: the reintroduction of the theme leads to a buleria, a fast, sunny, and bright flamenco dance that sweeps all before it. Composer Peter Cabus was a pianist, a chamber musician, and a teacher at the Brussels Royal Conservatory and at the Mechelen Municipal Conservatory, where he succeeded Godfried Devreese as director in 1959. This concerto, dedicated to Wim Brioen, is among his last compositions. Jozef Van Looy was a choral conductor and a teacher at the Lemmensinstituut. Like Cabus’s Concerto classico, Van Looy’s Concerto for guitar and orchestra (1980) is dedicated to Wim Brioen. World premiere recordings

Rudi WILFER Allein

Rudi Wilfer: piano Works by Wilfer, Schumann, Bach, et al The Austrian pianist Rudi Wilfer, who was born in 1936, has for decades counted among “the very few jazz pianists and composers whose importance goes beyond the borders of Austria” (Klaus Schulz). He has worked with Joe Zawinul, Friedrich Gulda, Fatty George, Leo Wright, Oliver Nelson, Karl Drewo, and Eddie “Lockjaw” Davis, and has also composed masses, a violin concerto, and an opera. On this CD he presents a program that combines jazz standards as “Lush Life” and “It Ain’t Necessarily So” with his own compositions and arrangements of pieces in the classical tradition, such as Schumann’s “Von fremden Ländern and Menschen” from the “Kinderszenen” and the Aria from Bach’s “St Matthew Passion.” Upcoming performance May 28, 2010 in Washington DC at the Austrian Embassy.

Ensemble Mikado Can She Excuse? Ensemble Mikado Works by Byrd, Dowland, Tomkins, Hume, et al The young Austrian Renaissance music ensemble Mikado, built around recorder player Maja Osojnik (2008 Bank Austria Artist of the Year), presents music from the time in which England dominated the world’s seas and controlled world trade, yet also experienced a period of cultural bloom: Queen Elisabeth I directed her power with theatrical display, which also included a discourse on love that she deliberately promoted. Her writing on the phenomenon of love contains an almost public character and should also be understood as a mirror of her time. In the compositions selected here, the beloved, the marriage-seeking, the pious, the spurned, the unapproachable, and the longed-for women all make themselves heard.

Johannes BRAHMS 21 Hungarian Dances

Krassimira Jordan, Thomas Kreuzberger: pianists BRAHMS: Hungarian Dances (21) Perhaps the most popular of Johannes Brahms’ works are his Hungarian Dances, which are first and foremost arrangements of melodies by Hungarian gypsy bands. The works, arranged in various instrumentations since, are worth hearing in their original form for piano four-hands, which demonstrates how subtly and inspired Brahms worked with the material, as Wilhelm Sinkovicz emphasizes in his text in the accompanying booklet. The works are played by Krassimira Jordan, trained in Vienna and primarily active in the United States, and by the Viennese pianist and professor Thomas Kreuzberger.

Royal Philharmonic Orchestra Guenther Herbig: conductor BEETHOVEN: Overture to Fidelio,” Op. 72c • Symphony No. 3 in E-flat Major, op. 55 “Eroica” “Herbig has had a long, solid career, including stints as music director of the Toronto and Detroit symphonies. He is a musician’s musician, and the performance bespoke rapport and respect between him and the orchestra.” — Washington Post (live performance review) Guenther Herbig has established himself as a prominent conductor in the international music scene, building a strong career in the US since 1980. He began his music training with Hermann Abenroth at the Franz Liszt Academy in Weimar. He continued his studies with Hermann Scherchen, and was one of only a few students chosen for intensive study with Herbert von Karajan, with whom he worked for two years. Because of the political situation in East Germany, Herbig’s first opportunity in the West came quite late—he was invited to be Principal Guest Conductor of the Dallas Symphony Orchestra in 1979. Since moving to the US in 1984, he has appeared with all the great American orchestras including the New York Philharmonic, Chicago Symphony, Boston Symphony, Philadelphia and Cleveland Orchestras, the Los Angeles Philharmonic, and San Francisco Symphony. He has toured America to great acclaim with the Detroit Symphony, as well as the Far East and Europe with the Toronto Symphony.

Royal Philharmonic Orchestra Yuri Simonov: conductor GÓRECKI: Symphony No. 3, Op. 36, “Symphony of Sorrowful Songs” • Three Pieces In Old Style “An awfully active and decisive conductor, who sang to the orchestra as they went along and sang each singer’s part with him.” — The Guardian “A towering inspiration to his players.” — The Times “Without sacrificing drama, Simonov brought out rarely heard nuances in Verdi’s rich, inventive orchestral score.” — San Diego Union-Tribune (live performance review) Yuri Simonov studied at the Leningrad Conservatoire with Rabinovich, and assisted Mravinksy at the Leningrad Conservatoire conducting The Mermaid by Dargomizhsky. Following first prize in the Saint Cecilia Conductors Competition in Rome in 1968, he was invited to make his debut at the Bolshoi Opera (Aida) in 1969 and was almost immediately appointed Chief Conductor—the youngest in history, and with his appointment ending in 1985, also the longest-serving. Highlights of his period with the Bolshoi Opera were the reintroduction of Wagner to the repertoire after a 40-year absence and several memorable tours led to Paris, Japan, Vienna, New York, Milan, and Washington DC. He has recorded with the Bolshoi company for Melodia, and for Collins Classics with the London Symphony Orchestra, the London Philharmonic, and the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra.
