Singularly gifted drummer/composer Mike Pride is prolifically active as a leader/accompanist in a wide variety of groups and genres: metal, noise, avant-garde rock, free music, and modern jazz. This May, AUM Fidelity presents two of the most profound and potent albums he has created to date. The 33-minute maximum intensity transformative epic Drummer’s Corpse was recorded within the same month as the diametrically opposed (in concept, content, and title) Birthing Days, and no pair of records better represent his multifarious artistic nature. Their simultaneous release is a major artistic statement from Mike Pride; together, they musically reflect the dichotomy of life itself. The other composition included here, “Some Will Die Animals,” is composed of a serialized tone row for double bass and a graphic score for guitar, bass drums, and tom-toms, and is dedicated to his late friend Gen Makino.

In his previous work, Steven Lugerner has used various selections of Biblical text as raw material for his musical compositions. To do this, he extracts codes of numerals through a method called Gematria (a traditional Jewish system of assigning numerical value to a word or phrase), in the belief that words or phrases bear some relation to each other. With these chains of numerals, Lugerner composes music through a plethora of aesthetic compositional decisions. Through this work, he has realized that different compositional ideas reveal themselves if related to numerals; one could use them in relation to time signatures, duration, or length of a tone; how many times a given tone is played or repeated; and one could also apply these numerals to vertical harmony. For We Have Heard focuses on the biblical Book of Joshua, which begins after the death of Moses and continues until the death and burial of Joshua the prophet. The book is split in two parts; the first half presents the conquest of the land, while the second recounts the apportionment of the land between the Israelite tribes. This dichotomy of events is mirrored in the album by using two different compositional processes: write and record compositions that would be played by the quartet in real time with no edits or overdubs, and secondly recording improvisations based around material from the previous compositions and heavily transcribing, editing, and composing new material to those improvisations. Pade was active in the resistance during the Second World War, and was interned at the Frøslev prison camp from 1944 until the end of the war. An archival collection of Pade’s electronic work will be released on Important Records in 2013. Else Marie Pade and Jacob Kirkegaard were both nominated for the Nordic Council Music Prize 2012 for their electronic music compositions. Despite an age difference of 51 years, they speak the same musical language and are prominent listeners and communicators of sounds that we tend to overhear. Now, for the first time, these two pioneers have collaborated on a work that investigates the variations one can hear when sound waves collide. Alessandro Cortini (Nine Inch Nails) recorded Forse One using a Buchla Music Easel. Forse, meaning “maybe” in Italian, is a series of three releases spread out over CD, LP, and cassette, with each format containing unique material. All pieces were written and performed live on a Buchla Music Easel, in the span of one month. The limited array of modules that the instrument offers sparked the artist’s creativity. Most pieces consist of a repeating chord progression, where the real change happens at a spectral/dynamic level, as opposed to the harmonic/chordal one. Of all the years with Nine Inch Nails, the period he spent writing and recording the instrumental record Ghosts I–IV was probably the one that changed his approach to music-making the most. After that record Alessandro started getting more into instrumental composition, although he tried to approach it in a different way. While the band had a vast array of tools and instruments at their disposal then, he decided to approach his own pieces by limiting himself to one instrument only, as he found himself being more decisive when faced with a limited creative environment.
