WELCOME to the nail family BLACK NUMBERS pg 16

Black Numbers was started around 2006 by owner Phil Battiato, and eventually came to be co-run by Dave Frenson of Banquets. Originally the label focused mainly on hardcore and punk, but over almost 40 releases, that focus has shifted to include indie, emo, rock, metal, and Americana acts while still maintaining the punk ethos on which the label was founded. With a penchant for vinyl releases and an emphasis on quality live shows and touring that has developed alongside Phil’s work as a booking agent, the label saw its best year so far in 2013 with releases by Real Friends, Pentimento, Banquets, Arliss Nancy, Tidal Arms, Red City Radio, and a slew of others. The label exists to bring great music to supportive fans, and allow the music community to help musicians do what they intend. Black Numbers comes to NAIL via REV Distro.

Media & Marketing

• Full press mailing to press, critics, and blogs. • Full radio servicing to CMJ and JazzWeek panel jazz stations, and NPR programming.

Live at the Village Vanguard captures guitarist Marc Ribot in an electrifying set with his trio, featuring bassist Henry Grimes and drummer Chad Taylor. Not only was it Ribot’s debut as a leader at the iconic venue, the occasion also marked the first appearance by Grimes since 1966 — right before his mysterious 35-year disappearance from the scene — when he played on the landmark album Albert Ayler In Greenwich Village. Grimes’ subsequent re-emergence on the jazz scene in 2003 — with all of his performing faculties intact — is testament to the power of music and the human spirit. “More than ever, Ribot’s creativity and versatility astound, confound, and frighten.”

After two milestone 2013 releases, 2014 is shaping up to be nothing short of extraordinary for the Front Line Assembly camp. FLA is kicking off the year by releasing Echoes, follow-up to 2013’s long-awaited Echogenetic and the critically acclaimed instrumental soundtrack for AirMech. Echoes is a remix collection of FLA’s favorite modern artists reinterpreting the band’s now classic Echogenetic. Presented as a 14-song album, Echoes features two new original songs, co-written by Ian Pickering of the Sneaker Pimps, alongside remixes from artists such as Comaduster, Sonic Mayhem, Youth Code, Slighter, Rhys Fulber, HECQ, Henrik Backstrom (of Necro Facility), Blush Response (Joey Blush from Scar the Martyr), Liebknecht (Daniel Meyer), Haujobb, and Techdiff. “Front Line Assembly have always been expert at disassembling familiar components of electronic music and refitting them into strange, mutant forms. Echogenetic proves they’ve still got mad science skills in that department, and they even manage to storm the modern EDM deck and fuse the best of old and new worlds with hardly a misstep.”

During the past decade, she has maintained an amazingly prolific pace, composing and recording non-stop yet releasing only a fraction of her output including her acclaimed contributions to Hypo’s albums (Active Suspension) and The Correct Use of Pets, winner of the Qwartz Electronic Music Awards (2006). Gauss consists of 40 minutes of continuous music. It starts and ends with the sound of the earth’s magnetic field, and in between presents a journey in sound. Taking inspiration from all kinds of music, Light Screamer has been likened to bands like the Jesus Lizard, Butthole Surfers, Sonic Youth, Melvins, and Swans. The band made their live debut at the Live at Heart festival in Örebro, and has been playing at the festival every year since. In March 2013 Light Screamer played three highly acclaimed shows during the SXSW festival, which resulted in a record deal with local indie label Australian Cattle God Records.

Conceptually it oscillates around the northern elements of glaciers, winds, and the exploration of such rugged territories physically, intellectually, and spiritually. Joint release by Russian post-industrial projects Reutoff and Sal Solaris. The working title of the record is “beyond the principles,” and refers to the psychoanalytic concept of inner human life guided by two principles: reality and pleasure. The sober, cold cosmic ambience of Sal Solaris expresses the principle of reality that restrains the drive of our wild souls, while the emotionally rich post-industrial of Reutoff matches the impetuosity of human desire. Does the domination of these principles mean that a human creature is crucified between the desire and impossibility of its realization? This album taken as a whole is a hypothesis, that there is a place where a person can be free from himself. With our eyes closed, we behold the inner “intrinsic grey,” Eigengrau, which shines beyond any principles. Imagined as the end of a cycle initiated with 2012’s Endessiah album, Severh Sehenh is not really the band’s third album, nor is it an EP. Rather, it is to be seen an appendix, a specific chapter of time, consisting of a lone track cut into different movements. Imagined as a burden to carry, a day we didn’t expect, and a final step that is unknown. No way to unload what is on our shoulders. Acceptance is the only way to trace a new path. Peaceful times with hard thoughts. Rough moments with joyful feelings. We will save what ties our throats. We will remember in our hands, the day when we lost. Active in the mid ’90s, Croatia’s TeHÔM has been resurrected by original member Miljenko Rajakovic. Their first two albums were released on Twilight Command, side label of Douglas P’s NER label. TeHÔM’s founding member Sinisa Ocurscak unfortunately passed away in 1997. Three years after his passing, their second album — thought to be their last — was finally released. The project was then laid to rest and now, years later, has been finally revived. A very surreal, obscure, and cinematic-sounding opus has been created by Miljenko, following closely in the footsteps of previous works but taking the project to new levels.

An international multimedia project based around the ideas of improvisational music and the coming together of musicians from different countries and musical backgrounds to create a spontaneous sonic landscape. “Skeylja” is an invented word combining the Frisian word for Terschelling (“Skylge”) and the Icelandic word for island (“Eyjan”). The project started when the Alvaret Ensemble (Greg Haines, Jan & Romke Kleefstra, and Sytze Pruiksma) travelled to Iceland to try to find a shared music language with Icelandic musicians Ingi Garðar Erlendsson, Kira Kira, Borgar Magnason, and Eiríkur Orri Ólafsson. They were joined by the 33 1/3 Collective, a group of visual artists from the Netherlands who began to collect footage that would later be used as source material for the visual side of the performance.

In 2013, the world celebrated Wagner’s 200th birthday. If Wagner were around today, how would he use the technical possibilities of modern studio technology and to what extent would he — once again — break away from conventions? In this new project, Wagner’s music is not retold but newly told, transporting his feeling for melody and dynamics into the modern age. J. Peter Schwalm, artistic initiator of the project, belongs to the most versatile exponents of contemporary electronic music. His first experimental electro-jazz project begat a cooperation with Brian Eno, which has continued through the years.
