• Friedrich Gulda was born in Vienna, studied piano and theory at the musical academy, and quickly made a name for himself as a concert pianist. In 1946 he won first prize for piano at the International Music Competition in Geneva, and began an international career that took him to all of the major music centers of the world. • He became heavily involved with jazz, made appearances as a jazz pianist and composed in this style, whose original improvisatory makings and creative opportunities particularly appealed to his multifaceted talent. • Joe Zawinul was born in Vienna and began to play the accordion at age five; he studied piano and violin at the Vienna Conservatory. In the early fifties he made his name through his work with the Austrian All Stars, Friedrich Gulda, and the Fatty George Band. • A scholarship in 1959 enabled him to study at the Berklee School of Music in Boston, where he appeared with Maynard Ferguson’s Birdland Dream Band. Following that, he accompanied Dinah Washington for two years, then formed a 10-year partnership, including 25 recordings, with Cannonball Adderley’s worldfamous combo. Five major records with Miles Davis were also produced during this time. • In 1971 he founded the supergroup Weather Report with Wayne Shorter, voted Top Band in the World for 15 years in the DownBeat International Critics Poll! The Poll has also voted him Best Keyboardist 33 times! • East Coast Blowout is the title of a suite written by American pianist and composer Jim McNeely for the WDR Big Band Cologne in 1989. McNeely became famous through his cooperation with the Thad Jones/ Mel Lewis Orchestra, Stan Getz, and Phil Woods. • In addition to the WDR Big Band, McNeely also worked as arranger for the Metropole Orchestra, the Danish Radio Jazz Orchestra, and the HR Big Band Frankfurt. • Guitarist John Scofield is the main soloist of the suite, whose style has had a formidable influence on many of today’s new guitarists. • The long-awaited new solo piano album of Jeroen van Vliet, featuring his original compositions! • Jeroen van Vliet, born April 1965 in the Netherlands, studied piano with Willem Kühne and Bert van den Brink. • World-class pianist Peter Beets shared the stage with jazz greats like Chick Corea, Wynton Marsalis, Toots Thielemans, Elvin Jones, and more. After this point, his career began to rise rapidly. • Unissued on 78s means just that: some of the songs here may have appeared on LPs, but even so they would be several decades old by now, and collector’s items in their own right! • When Victor’s mobile recording unit arrived in Houston, Texas in March 1925, one of the bands they chose to record was led by Lloyd Finlay. Seven titles were made, of which six were issued. Beyond the facts that Seger Ellis was their piano player, and that Jack Murhill sang on the unissued title, nothing else is known about this quite interesting group, which falls stylistically somewhere between hot dance music and country. • Victor’s second choice for that trip was Fatty Martin’s Orchestra, a much more straightforward jazz outfit than Finlay’s. Two excellent titles resulted, and although we do have a partial list of personnel for the orchestra, that is as far as our knowledge goes! After this one session, the participants returned to recorded obscurity. • Next up are two titles also made for Victor’s mobile unit, but in New Orleans by Tony Parenti and his Famous Melody Boys. This was their third recording session of 1925, having already made one Victor session on the previous day, and one several months earlier for Columbia. The two selections here are first-rate examples of New Orleans jazz of the middle ’20s.
