AUGUSTIN HADELICH NPR’S “FIRST LISTEN”

Great news for this important AVIE release: NPR has featured it in the enormously popular “First Listen” series the week prior to its U.S. release! “Looking for a new violinist to fall in love with? Meet Augustin Hadelich, the 29-year-old Italian-born son of German parents. On his new album, to be released March 11, he pairs two searching, seemingly disparate violin concertos, one classic and one contemporary.”

The performance is as fresh as when the recording was made in 1994, with baritone Ben Parry as the Trojan hero Aeneas, and soprano Emily Van Evera as the abandoned Queen of Carthage, delivering an interpretation of Dido’s Lament that is as dignified as it is sublime. Andreas Haefliger continues his fascinating, thought-provoking, and captivating Perspectives series, in which he juxtaposes the Piano Sonatas of Beethoven with other composers, casting an enlightening glow on the works that one would not detect if played in isolation. On Perspectives 6, themes of humanity, nature, and love run through a program emphatically to be listened to rather than analyzed intellectually. Haefliger opens with Beethoven’s early Piano Sonata No. 10, Op. 14, and then segues into two of Berio’s seldom-heard encores, “Erdenklavier” and “Wasserklavier.” He emerges to perform Beethoven’s late Piano Sonata No. 30, Op. 109, followed by two more miniatures by Berio, “Luftklavier” and “Feuerklavier.” The album culminates with Schumann’s great Fantasy in C.

They now turn to core 19th-century fare, some of the greatest chamber music ever written: Schubert’s single-movement “Quartettsatz,” and the composer’s final chamber work, the enduring String Quintet, joined by eminent Canadian cellist Gary Hoffman. AVIE Records Karl Stobbe: violin YSAŸE: Six Sonatas for Solo Violin, Op. 27 “Soulful musicianship.” — San Francisco Classical Voice Canadian violinist Karl Stobbe makes an indelible mark with his debut recording for AVIE, a bold traversal of Ysaÿe’s Six Sonatas for Solo Violin. For these seminal works of the 20th century, the virtuoso violinist was inspired by J.S. Bach’s works for solo violin. Stobbe is recognized as one of Canada’s most accomplished and diverse violinists. He has appeared in North America’s most notable concert halls, including Carnegie Hall and Boston’s Jordan Hall. As a chamber musician and soloist, he has shared the stage with many leading and diverse violinists of our day, from James Ehnes to Mark O’Connor. Also an accomplished luthier, Karl’s passion for the construction and mechanics of the violin contributes to his ability as a performer. Bearing as it does the imprint of the Counter-Reformation, the artistic production of this contemporary of Velázquez and Murillo makes accessible the mystical ideas of religious figures such as Saint Teresa of Avila and Saint John of the Cross.

Teodoro Anzellotti: accordion KURTÁG: Játékok • LISTZ: Bagatelle sans tonalité • Nuages gris • Resignazione • LIGETI: Musica ricercata “The way Anzellotti negotiates the fast-flying 20th Variation is remarkable (his agility in the work’s more playful episodes, such as Variation 23, at times defies belief) … Varied colours and rhythms abound throughout the performance.” — Gramophone Teodoro Anzellotti plays Ligeti, Kurtág, and Liszt and arranges these compositions for accordion; it is remarkable that these arrangements are authorized by Kurtág and Ligeti! The first soloist voyage leads to Hungary, to the end of the 19th century, a sojourn which lasts more than 100 years and ends after the decline of the Danube Monarchy and the divesture of the Iron Curtain. This recording seems like a sound from Claudio Magris’s literary portrait “Donau”: Anzellotti shines with virtuosity, and the sound of his accordion directs us into the depths of the Hungarian soul.

In 1879, the 21-year-old Elgar was appointed Bandmaster at the Worcester Country & City Lunatic Asylum in the village of Powick, and to the delight of the patients, there were “entertainments” every Friday night during which the patients could join in dancing to the utterly charming Quadrilles and Polkas composed by a young composer. The orchestra was rather “eccentric” in that it was made up of piccolo, flute, clarinet, two cornets, euphonium and bombardon, up to eight violins, occasional viola, cello, and double bass with piano — a maximum of 19 players. Elgar stayed at the Asylum for five years and, after he left, this music was ignored and then forgotten. SOMM is delighted to have the chance to record Elgar’s first attempts at composition, and the results are indeed life-enhancing!

Cappella Pratensis Stratton Bull: director JOSQUIN: Hymnus: Ave maris stella • Introitus: Rorate celi • Missa Ave maris stella • Graduale: Tollite portas • Alleluia: Ave Maria • Offertorium: Ave Maria • Motet: Mittit ad virginum • Prefatio (+ polyphonic responses) • Pater noster (+ polyphonic respond) • Communio: Ecce virgo • Motet: Missus est Gabriel angelus The music of Josquin Desprez is performed, recorded, and studied more than that of any other composer of the Renaissance. Although his numerous masses and motets are now more than 500 years old, they have entered our modern musical museum of masterpieces, heard in concert and on recordings as independent works of art. But just as a stunning Renaissance altarpiece becomes even more impressive and meaningful when restored to its original place, so the sacred polyphony of the period gains in beauty and meaning when heard within the ritual framework it once enhanced. That ritual framework told sacred stories — of Christ, his mother, and the saints — primarily through plainsong and recitation. For special occasions, in institutions able to support highly trained singers, sacred polyphony added special luster. This recording aims to recapture a sense of the ceremonial context that would have surrounded Josquin’s sacred polyphony in a place where he sang and composed, and where his music continued in use long after he left. That ritual context is the Saturday Mass for the Blessed Virgin during Advent, a liturgy focused on the Annunciation story; that place is the Sistine Chapel in Rome. PLAYABLE IN ALL CD PLAYERS. For optimal sound, use compatible surround sound system.

Similarly, Carl Nielsen’s Suite for string orchestra, Op. 1 exists rarely on today’s concert platforms, or even on recordings. Claus Efland is an exclusive artist with Challenge Classics. He regards himself as an ambassador of music from his native Denmark and the rest of Scandinavia. A major artistic goal is to bring the distinctive musical language of Nordic composers to a wider audience. This is especially true of the music of Danish composer Carl Nielsen, which exerted a formative influence on Efland’s musical passions. Sinfonietta Riga is a professional chamber orchestra based in Riga, the capital of Latvia. It was established in 2006 as a state orchestra and currently resides at Spikeri Concert Hall, one of the most creative venues of Riga. Although it is a relatively new orchestra, Sinfonietta Riga demonstrates great professionalism and performs sophisticated concert programs, continuously expanding its creative horizons. The 34 young, passionate, and talented members of Sinfonietta Riga also enjoy performing solo and with various chamber music groups and ensembles.

Capella de la Torre

Capella de la Torre gathers together musicians who have made an international name in historically informed performance. The ensemble’s goal is to perform the rich and, as yet, too-little regarded music of the Middle Ages and the Renaissance on authentic instruments, thus putting it into the spotlight of general cultural awareness. The group has released more than a dozen CDs, which reflect a thematic range from municipal tower music through advanced religious works of the 16th and 17th century.

As godfather of the cross-genre work of art, he revolutionized the direction of theatre and operas into a modern multimedia experience. If Wagner were around today, how would he use the technical possibilities of modern studio technology and to what extent would he — once again — break away from conventions? In this new project, Wagner’s music is not retold but newly told, transporting his feeling for melody and dynamics into the modern age. J. Peter Schwalm, the artistic initiator of this project, belongs to the most versatile exponents of contemporary electronic music. His first experimental electro-jazz project begat a cooperation with Brian Eno, which has continued throughout the years. Schwalm wrote film scores as well as ballet music and music for stage plays, and also joined Bono’s project Artists Against AIDS Worldwide. He is closely connected to Norwegian jazz guitarist Eivind Aarset, whose solo albums have been released on the Jazzland and ECM labels. Pianist Christine Schütze completes the quartet; this graduate of the Hamburg and Lübeck music colleges also tours with a separate cabaret program, which she has performed at the famous Düsseldorf Kom(m)ödchen.

Louth Contemporary Music Society Carducci Quartet Gordon Jones: bass RASKATOV: Seven Words by Starets Silouan A charming handwritten note from composer Alexander Raskatov graces the booklet of Louth Contemporary Music Society’s new release, Monk’s Music. Raskatov’s monumental work for string quartet and bass voice, Seven Words by Starets Silouan, was completed in 2005 but following the death of its commissioner, cellist Valentin Berlinsky of the Borodin Quartet, the work was never performed. “Finally the first performance took place in Ireland,” wrote the composer in advance of the work’s premiere in February 2013 — “I am waiting for my own discovery of this mysterious and so attractive country.” Modelled on Joseph Haydn’s Seven Last Words of Christ, Raskatov’s work sets seven stanzas from the writings of Starets Silouan (1866–1938), a Russian monk also known as Saint Silouan the Athonite due to his spiritual development on Mount Athos in Greece.

In his remarkable style, the celebrated Hungarian organist interprets the Second Sonata for organ, the Introduction and Passacaglia in F minor, the Fantasia and Fugue in D minor, and the Chorale Fantasia “Straf mich nicht in deinem Zorn.” The Jehmlich organ was built after the accomplished reconstruction of St. Wolfgang Church, which had been heavily damaged during the Second World War. In its richness and variety of sound, it appears as an ideal instrument for this kind of literature. In addition to that, István Ella is a true connoisseur of this instrument. After a CD featuring music by Mendelssohn, Rheinberger, Reger, and Liszt — and the 5-CD box set of Liszt’s complete organ works — this is his third organ production realized with Querstand at this instrument.

Together with flutist Ursula Bosshardt, she discovers a seemingly disappearing musical culture to be animated at the Späth organ of Grubenmann church in Wädenswil. BMC Records Hungarian National Philharmonic Orchestra Zoltán Kocsis: conductor W.A. MOZART: Symphony in G minor K. 183 • Symphony in G minor K. 550 Perhaps it is not completely by chance that in Mozart’s symphonic music the works written in the minor are rare, and occupy a special place. Compared to the surrounding symphonies, the K. 183 composition is a major step forward in form, craftsmanship, orchestration, and instrumentation. The young composer’s affinity for drama is often apparent, as is that mood which acts as a link between Mozart’s operas and symphonic pieces. In this sense this youthful masterpiece is not so far from the mature K. 550 Symphony in G minor. In one respect, however, the latter is clearly superior to the earlier: in its melodic lines and the development of motives. The richness of the harmonic progressions seems to glance forward to Romanticism — a richness that is characteristic of other works of Mozart too. Instead of breaking up the classical order, here these features help to create the form.

Amadinda Percussion Group Hungarian National Philharmonic Orchestra Zoltán Kocsis: conductor SCHOENBERG: Pelléas et Mélisande, Op. 5 • VARESE: Amériques Many hidden threads link the two compositions on this disc, despite the fact that they are apparently unrelated: one of them is a slightly megalomaniac farewell to great German romanticism, the other is a fine example of the new wave of experimentation that followed the Rite of Spring, and about which Stravinsky himself expressed his praise. Claude Debussy worked for ten years to create a truly French drama from Belgian poet Maurice Maeterlinck’s dreamlike drama, Pelléas et Mélisande. It was this work that finally liberated composers from the influence of Richard Wagner (and particularly Tristan and Isolde). By an irony of fate, only a year after Debussy’s anti-Tristan premiere, a young man from Vienna, who had been working in Berlin from 1901 to 1903 — a certain Arnold Schönberg — completed his own score of Pelleas. Far from turning from Wagner, it seemed to follow the escape route Wagner himself had indicated. True, it was not opera, but rather wordless program music that Wagner’s followers and supporters took to their hearts. Edgard Varese (1883–1965) wrote only a couple of hours’ worth of music in his lifetime and yet he exerted a remarkable influence on the direction of 20th-century music. His composition Amériques was written between 1918 and 1921.

This includes the three sonatas of Schlegel, van Eijken, and Brandts Buys, which are recorded on this CD. Discovery Music & Vision Nick Etheridge: tuba GUS Brass Band Basscraft DAVIES: Concerto for Tuba and Band • DAVOREN: Pads and Riffs • BATES: Concerto for Solo Tuba • DOBSON: Definite Damage Nick Etheridge’s previous three albums have all been elaborate collaborations under his “Tubagility” banner, projecting his vision of the modern tuba and music that is challenging, and perhaps unexpected. These projects are a labor of love, hugely satisfying, and it is always an enormous challenge to bring them safely from conception to completion. This new album is different, and is unashamedly a project of specially commissioned solo concerto works for tuba and the artist himself. Diversity is a grand title for a substantial work with dramatic connotations, and a powerful and flexible musical form of many shapes and guises. Ultimately, it’s a platform for conversation between soloist and accompanying group. Between the interwoven and distinctly individual pieces he has created an interesting as well as contrasting dialogue.
