“Gang of Four put the rhythm in punk, with minimal funk fills and syncopations worthy of James Brown, buried under scratchy harmonics … vocal duties now rest in the hands of new addition John ‘Gaoler’ Sterry, as well as The Kills’ Alison Mosshart and German luminary Herbert Grönemeyer, plus cameos from Big Pink’s Robbie Furz and Davie Bowie bandmate Gail Ann Dorsey.” — SPIN

As Kathryn tours with The New Pornographers, the buzz is growing for her new album, available in April from File Under: Music! “Calder hangs out in the background and plays all the cool synthy shit at The New Pornographers’ gigs. She’s kinda like Eno in Roxy Music … [this is] the follow-up record to her critically praised and Polaris-recognized sophomore album Bright and Vivid.” — TINY MIX TAPES

Praised by critics and the public alike, Qntal masterfully blends medieval melodies, languages, and instruments with elements of modern electronic music. Over the span of two decades and six previous albums, the band has become one of the most popular in the medieval music scene. The seventh studio album ushers in a new era for Qntal. Elegant artistry mingles with danceable sounds, with the group always committed to the historical importance of the original piece. Alongside the band’s reinterpretations of medieval sources, such as Carmina Burana, the theologian Meister Eckhart, and the Ars Nova composer Guillaume de Machaut, they now also advance as far as the 17th, 18th, and 19th centuries. One example, the enchanting poem “By the Light of the Moon” written by British poet Lord Byron, is just as well transformed into a dignified piece of musical art as “Tyger,” from the poem by nature mystic William Blake. With “Schnee,” the album even dares to enter the present: fantasy author Markus Heitz, known for his Dwarves saga, conceived this ode to the “eternal night.”

— GOTHIC PARADISE “Qntal continue their journey, sweeping into venues and casting spells and then sweeping out again … Thoroughly enjoyable, long may they charm us.”

On August 31, 2013, Daniel Graves did something never imagined possible: he played an entirely acoustic concert as Aesthetic Perfection. Pulling it off took a year of planning, months of preparation, and weeks of rehearsal. Even then, nothing was perfect. How could it be? No computers, no backing tracks, nothing but what each musician brought to the stage. This unique experience was recorded at Complex in Glendale, CA, a venue renowned for its incredible sound system and intimate concert experience.

Graves said of the experience “I was more musically vulnerable than I had ever been before. The whole experience taught me that it’s ok to be vulnerable, it’s ok to be flawed, it’s ok to make mistakes, it’s ok to relinquish control and put your trust in others. Though much of this has been part of the Aesthetic Perfection ‘philosophy’ since Day 1, putting that into practice is easier said than done … I’m proud of what my friends and I accomplished, and I’m grateful to them for their hard work and creativity that made my vision come to life.”

For their debut album on File Under: Music, NEEDS decided to step back from the chaos that has always fueled their live shows to purposefully craft a record that inspires you to never stop listening. Bassist Glenn Alderson has a picture hanging on his fridge of vocalist Sean Orr lying shirtless on the floor, screaming into a microphone propped up in a shoe. The photo was taken at the explosive final show for Orr’s last band, which Alderson saw as the beginning of his new band. After getting guitarist Derek Adam (You Say Party) onboard, he got Orr back on the mic. Guitarist Colin Spensley and drummer Devin O’Rourke witnessed the early NEEDS performances and took no convincing to join the orchestra for Orr’s performance piece, in which nothing he can get his hands on is safe. New Atlantis Records is thrilled to present Time AS One Axis, the sophomore recording by the mighty Invisible Things! Comprised of veteran guitarist Mark Shippy (U.S. Maple, Shorty) and drummer & noted ethnomusicologist Jim Sykes (Parts & Labor, Grooms), this is a colossal sound fountain of heavy, atmospheric noise rock engineered by studio legend Martin Bisi (Sonic Youth, Swans) at B.C. Studio in Brooklyn. Cathartic squalls of feedback coalesce with forceful, rapturous percussion, evoking both the searing intensity of NY NoWave, and the skewed songcraft of the SKiN GRAFT/Load Records stables in equal measure.

Motobunny promises foot-stomping, glitter-flinging, bass-booming American rock. The band was formed in 2014, by four longtime friends in the backstage chaos of an Iggy Pop concert. After years of sharing green rooms, tour vans, back lines, and seedy motel rooms, they decided to storm the stage together as one thundering, powerhouse rock band with two magnetic frontwomen. The four members wrote the band’s self-titled full-length debut together, recorded in Detroit at Ghetto Recorders with Jim Diamond (White Stripes, Electric Six), mixed in Phoenix at Flying Blanket Recording with Bob Hoag (Dear in The Headlights, The Format), and mastered in Fort Collins at The Blasting Room with Jason Livermore (Rise Against). “Iggy Pop meets Icona Pop.” — HYPE MACHINE Track Listing: The Other Side • Shake Me • Let’s Go Out • Red Rover • Drown • Motobunny • Apocalypse Twist • My Boyfriend Is A Ghost • You’re Killing Me • Thinkin’ About Me • Spider & Fly • I Warned You Key Markets: Hometown: Los Angeles, Phoenix. Graduals is the first Ekca Liena full-length in over two years, and the official sequel to the dreamscapes of the critically acclaimed Slow Music For Rapid Eye Movement. “While for all accounts the drone found within is fundamentally dynamic and complex, Ekca Liena still manages to retain the disarming allure of spherical aural journeying.” — HEATHEN HARVEST Track Listing: Out Fir • Mattie Devore • Summoning Dust • Free Precipitation • Precip / Epilogue • Fields Forever • Ky Ra Key Markets: New York, Chicago, Los Angeles

Le Seul Elément is the solo project of a French musician who does not want to be known by his real name, and this has everything to do with the way he sees this project: there is an air of danger coming from the music, which seems to come from a ghost or some otherworldly force, as an abstract shadow-play translated to music. Silence plays as much a part in this music as does sound. He describes his music as a mix of classical piano, noise, ambient, and post rock.

Follow-up to the acclaimed Tiefschlaf CD (2012), this project from Phelios’ Martin Stürzter and Christian Stiztel finds the duo traveling even further into space, beyond the reaches of light and into realms never before explored. While the overall approach is similar to Tiefschlaf, the seven tracks that comprise Enceladus feel weightier and darker; a glorious amalgam of drift and synth drone that seems to extend beyond any visual measure, the tones and textures floating off into an infinite expanse, pulled and stretched by an unseen gravitational force. Space-inspired dark ambient can be a tricky thing; it has been attempted by many with some measure of success, but few capture the coldness, stillness, and awe-inspiring beauty of the interstellar void as brilliantly as Sphäre Sechs. Progressive and heavy metal, film music and musicals, a concept fantasy that is an allegory to real-life endeavors — all of these are the cornerstones of Orpheus Blade, a project led by Adi Bitran. Armed with an “all or nothing” attitude that has made her bleed for her creation, she chose only the best to accompany her on this journey to her first album, Wolf’s Cry. An eclectic collection of shapes and colors, this is unique metal with layers upon layers of cruel guitars and carefully written lyrics.

180-gram vinyl features thick matte covers with spot varnish print, 12-page booklet, and free digital download. The Eye of Time is the solo project of French musician Marc Euvrie, whose musical development is deeply connected with the French DIY punk and hardcore scene although he has been classically trained as well. With his new album, ANTI, four letters take us to the most extreme and darkest recesses of the mind, influenced by the likes of Third Eye Foundation, Portishead, Neurosis, DJ Shadow, Björk, Sigur Rós, Edvard Grieg, and Godspeed You! Black Emperor.

180-gram vinyl features thick matte covers & printed inner sleeves, with free digital download. Piano Interrupted is the brainchild of London-based pianist and composer Tom Hodge and French electronic producer Franz Kirmann. Last year’s release The Unified Field was well-received and critically acclaimed, finding its way onto a number of “best of the year” lists. Now, 2015 brings a stunning remix of the album featuring reinterpretations by Hidden Orchestra, Floex, John Lemke, Saffronkeira, Origamibiro, Franz Kirmann, and Second Moon of Winter.
