Challenge Classics Label Feature

GEORG PHILIPP TELEMANN Les Nations - Overtures & Oboe Concertos Georg Philipp Telemann, although he was considered in his day to be the greatest German composer, is today still in the shadow of his friend and colleague Johann Sebastian Bach. His output, by virtue of its immense size, is often said today to be superficial. I wish, through the works chosen for this CD, to prove how Telemann, despite being so prolific, aimed to produce a work of quality in all circumstances, and, moreover, to obtain proof, musically, of an outstanding humorous talent, even bordering on the scabrous.

Although Telemann is known to have composed around 125 concertos for between one and four soloists, he himself admitted that works of this genre “have never really come straight from the heart. ... At the least, this is true: that mostly they have a whiff of France. It may well be that Nature herein wished to deny me something, since we cannot all be able to do everything, but there is probably at least one other reason, namely that most of the concertos I have encountered contained numerous difficulties and crooked leaps, but little harmony and even poorer melody. The former I hated, for they were uncomfortable for my hand and bow, and the latter qualities, to which my ear had become accustomed through French music, were so clearly lacking, that I could neither love nor wish to imitate.” (Autobiography, 1718) Telemann’s unfavourable opinion of concertos did not, however, result in compositions that lacked taste, on the contrary. It might well be precisely because he was not caught up in the Vivaldian rage of the time that his concertos stand out as original compositions among the pseudo-Italian scores of many of his German contemporaries, a fact well illustrated by his two solo concertos for oboe, strings and basso continuo in C minor, probably composed between 1708 and 1712. Both concertos are made up of four movements (slow-fast-slow-fast), using a free pattern of spontaneous exchanges between soloist and orchestra, rather than the habitual sequence of alternating orchestral ritornellos and solo episodes.

5

Unlike the concerto, the orchestral suite was a genre that Telemann fully embraced. He wrote between 125 and 135 orchestral suites. Although it is, in most cases, impossible to date the concertos, we know that Telemann composed them between 1705 (the year in which, according to his own records, he started writing orchestral suites) and 1765 (date of one autograph), which means that they span his entire career. Telemann played an important role in popularizing the French-style suite. In Jean-Baptiste Lully and his contemporaries, Telemann found models whose work appealed to him for reasons of character, structure and non-musical themes (i.e. musical illustrations of a series of nationalities, including the ‘nationality’ of horses, both lame and running!), as will become apparent from the three suites on this disc. In short, this disc intends to show how Telemann deploys, to his heart’s content, an entire wardrobe-full of different (dance) costumes for his playful encounters with (other) nations, yet he never stoops to tackiness. It is this gift that sets him apart from his contemporaries and makes him such a fascinating figure among the protagonists who shaped the landscape of our musical history. Cobra Records Maria Milstein: violin Hanna Shybayeva: piano POULENC: Sonata for violin and piano • JANÁCˇ EK: Sonata for violin and piano, JW VII/7 • PROKOFIEV: Sonata No. 1 for violin and piano in F minor, Op. 80 Violinist Maria Milstein and pianist Hanna Shybayeva have been playing as a duo since 2013. This release, their debut CD together, features a number of works composed during times of war. The three Sonatas struck both Hanna and Maria with their powerful messages, which remain equally relevant today. For each of these composers, artistic creation provided an outlet for expression and communication in oppressive times. Their expressions of distress are very personal, ranging from direct, descriptive depictions of the atrocities of war to nostalgic recollections and alternative realities.

This is a collection of some of the most beautiful English songs written in the 20th century, in which the poets and composers express internal journeys of a wide emotional range, from youthful love and its erotic pleasures to the stoic wisdom of advanced years, reflecting on the passing of time and death itself. These four composers knew each other, sharing a love of English folk songs that they collected throughout the land, preserving and absorbing the oral tradition before this heritage was lost. In addition to the famous Butterworth settings of Housman’s poems, this disc also includes the rarely performed “Ludlow Town” by E.J. Moeran. This recording unites two musicians who bring a breadth of experience from the world of international opera, interpreting these cycles with a true sense of theatre and bringing a fresh artistic sensitivity to the distilled genre of English song.

All were composed in a period of seventy years (1851–1921), which proved to be key in the evolution of piano language from romanticism to modernity, a time when Spanish piano music constituted a reference for the romantic Spain dreamed of by writers and poets. Albéniz, Granados, and De Falla represent the culmination of this nationalist and evocative piano, its roots sunk in the essence of popular Spanish music but recreated in a modern language of the greatest quality.

Delius’ sonata, although falling into three sections, is seen as one continuous movement, with the third presenting an intensified and elaborate development of the first. His simplicity is dependent on the performer’s interpretation; however, he confessed that his music “does not sound well on the piano,” scoring in an unconventional way for the instrument.

Maw’s use of 15 solo strings gives his pieces great diversity with regards to timbre, technique, and texture, in adjacency to the large array of chord types, contrasting the homogeneity of most serial music. Maw’s original Study I and Study II were combined into a single movement, creating space for his Study II featured on this CD, retaining the element of “open form” which ensembles of this scale relish.

All three composers featured on this CD taught composition at the Royal College of Music. Stanford’s Sonata, completed in late 1911, reflects his use of integrating qualities of Irish music into his German style, with the spacing between the two instruments creating a simple balance. Howells’ Sonata also shows diversity, with a focus on expression and an unsettling poetic nature. Benjamin’s elegant style is portrayed beautifully in his piece, with a subtle yet large range of musical color highlighting the character of his style.

Formosa composed Pour les vingt doigts while studying in Rome in 1983, in order to perform the piece in Warsaw (which ultimately did not take place). A few years later, it was performed at Sydney Opera House. Flights’ simple imagery of a river and its wildlife uses structural metaphors to relate its events to the harmony used, with each piano reflecting the other. Smalley’s Accord is a continuous 43-minute piece falling into five larger sections, which are then each divided further into two unequal segments that seek to highlight different features of the same basic material.

In 1778, Mozart spent half a year in Paris accompanied by his mother, Anna Maria. Tragedy struck in the middle of the summer, when she died of fever. Both works on this album were composed during the first weeks after their arrival in the city. In a letter to his father dated April 7, 1778, Mozart wrote that he had composed a sinfonia concertante for Mannheim musicians visiting Paris, scored for flute, oboe, horn, and bassoon. The work on this recording is considered to be a revised copy of the score, with the flute replaced by a clarinet.

Four Intermezzi for Gamba are new compositions written for an old instrument (the viola da gamba). They were composed especially for this album, and are performed by Hanna Loftsdottir.

As an inherently expressive composer, strong colors and contrasts are a major part of Ragnarsson’s works, with little evidence of a dull moment. This CD contains compositional highlights between the years 1976–1998, when he found influence in Grimsson’s poertry, which fascinated Ragnarsson in his younger years.

CD: SYR 141448 Price Code: S (SRP $18.99) Number of Discs: 1 Jewel Case, Box Lot 25 8% RESTOCK DISCOUNT

Louis Vierne (October 1870 – June 1937) will go down to posterity mainly as an organist, although he could have made a name for himself in every domain with the sole exception of the theatre. Born nearly blind, in 1880 he heard Franck for the first time at St. Clotilde and was later accepted by him as a private pupil. While at the Institute for Young Blind Children, he studied piano, organ, and violin, which benefitted his chamber music production. It was during his 1750th concert, when he had just played “Tombstone for a Dead Child,” that he was struck down by a cardiac embolism in the organ loft of Notre Dame.
