As the only surviving male vocalist of the venerable Buena Vista Social Club, singer and guitarist Eliades Ochoa carries a weighty past. Born in Cuba in 1946, Ochoa learned to play the guitar at age six. As an adult, he performed with many bands, including Cuarteto Patria, a Cuban folk group. But he hit it big in 1997 with the Buena Vista Social Club, whose self-titled album sold several million copies and reignited international interest in traditional Cuban music. While taking some time off from touring and promoting their first album Hemispheres (2012), Florida’s Alexander & The Grapes began collecting as much recording equipment as they could and eventually built their own home studio, affectionately called Yoko Phono. Friend, engineer, and producer Jeremy Mendicino (of Boston’s Pretty & Nice) was flown down to Florida to help the band record 2016’s Hyper Self out of the 50+ songs they had written during that time. Almost gone, but certainly not forgotten, is the band’s original playing field of insurgent country and Americana. This album constitutes the entire musical part of a large-scale live audiovisual performance piece based around the actions and decisions of whistleblower Edward Snowden, with the visuals included as downloadable content. Matthew Collings is a Scotland-based composer who collaborates regularly with artists from all kinds of fields including Dag Rosenqvist from Jasper, TX and Denovali labelmate Talvihorros. He’s responsible for several installations using custom-made software, which have been exhibited at Burning Man Festival in San Francisco and Glasgow’s Centre for Contemporary Arts. Kuba Kapsa is a Polish pianist and composer, who served as leader of the avant-jazz combo Contemporary Noise Sextet (2006–2014). Beyond that, he is a renowned composer for film and theater. His latest venture is the first of a sophisticated series of projects of modern classical music bearing the common title “Vantdraught.” The first part of the series, called Vantdraught 10 Vol. 1, featured 10 classical instruments: four violins, two violas, cello, vibraphone, marimba, and piano. This second part is Vantdraught 4, a quartet album written for violin, clarinet/bass clarinet, trombone, and piano. The minimalistic style is preserved, although the music is less repetitive and much more intimate.
