“
Erik Satie’s 150th birthday on May 17, 2016 gives us the perfect chance to rediscover the works of this original and unique composer who was a friend of Pablo Picasso, Georges Braque, Léonide Massine, Man Ray, and a close friend of Jean Cocteau, all important figures of the avant-garde movement in Paris so beautifully captured by Woody Allen’s award-winning film Midnight in Paris. For this Satie celebration year, the venerable label Winter & Winter recorded a selection of works with the world-famous soprano Barbara Hannigan and pianist Reinbert de Leeuw, known for his outstanding Satie interpretations. “Socrate” is the central focus of the album, heard alongside “Trois Mélodies” from 1886, “Trois Autres Mélodies” from 1886–1906, and “Hymne” from 1891.
“ Breathtaking. — Washington Post
“
Barbara Hannigan and Reinbert de Leeuw are two of the most important representatives of the contemporary classical music world. In January 2016, Winter & Winter released her critically-acclaimed, Billboard-charting album Let me tell you, composed by Hans Abrahamsen. She is world-renowned for her superb virtuosity and inspired artistry, having earned the highest praise from audiences and critics alike. And Reinbert de Leeuw is the most original piano interpreter of Eric Satie’s music. His tempi are unique; he creates time-expanding sounds. It seems like Erik Satie has written his songs specifically for these two artists! Erik Satie’s life was full of up and downs, and he struggled with financial worries and health problems. In 1925, he died from prolonged alcohol abuse. But his music lives on, and with this stunning new release Barbara Hannigan and Reinbert de Leeuw allow us feel the spirit of Erik Satie, reborn.

For the past several seasons, the Cypresses have immersed themselves in performing Beethoven on tours throughout the U.S. and Europe as well as recording all 16 works plus the “Grande Fugue” (Große Fuge). The completion of their Beethoven cycle is a fitting celebration of the Bay Area-based ensemble’s 20th anniversary, as well as their valedictory season: their final performance will take place in June 2016, preceded by a month-long Beethoven celebration performing all of the quartets throughout San Francisco.

“Artistry of uncommon insight and cohesion.” — Gramophone
Cecily Ward, violin Tom Stone, violin Ethan Filner, viola Jennifer Kloetzel, cello In nearly 20 years on the concert stage, the four members of the San Francisco-based Cypress String Quartet (CSQ) have played thousands of concerts together throughout North America, Europe, Asia, and Latin America. Praised by the New York Times for “tender, deeply expressive” interpretations, they have recorded over 15 albums and are played regularly on radio stations throughout the world. They have been heard on the Netflix original series “House of Cards,” and have collaborated with leading artists ranging from Michael Franti of Spearhead to modern dance companies. Since its inception, the CSQ has created a niche in the world arts community as one of the most passionate, insightful, and innovative ensembles of their time. Whether performing for seasoned concert-goers or listeners being exposed to classical music for the first time, the CSQ has a unique ability to articulate what is enthralling about the masterpieces they perform. In addition to definitive interpretations of masters such as Beethoven, Mozart, and Schubert, the CSQ has commissioned some of the most important composers of our time including Kevin Puts, Philippe Hersant, Jennifer Higdon, George Tsontakis, and Elena Ruehr. CSQ members were educated at the world’s most prestigious conservatories including the Juilliard School, the Royal College of Music and Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London, Indiana University-Bloomington, and the Eastman School of Music. Early in their musical career, the CSQ mentored with members of the Amadeus Quartet in London.

English Symphony Orchestra English Chamber Orchestra Rodolfus Choir Kenneth Woods: conductor ELGAR (orch. This version, which was also named a “Premiere of the Year” by Classical Music magazine, appears in a studio recording alongside Fraser’s choral arrangement of Elgar’s Sea Pictures, with Woods conducting the English Chamber Orchestra and the Rodolfus Choir. Written in 1948, Gál’s large-scale romantic concerto abounds with sweeping phrases and pyrotechnics, yet at the heart of the piece lies the composer’s signature clarity and precision, making the work an ideal coupling for his 18th century Viennese compatriot Mozart’s great E-flat major concerto of 1785.

Frank Almond: violin William Wolfram: piano BEETHOVEN: Violin Sonata No. 9, Op. 47 • MAIER-RÖNTGEN: Violin Sonata in B minor • TUBIN: Sonata for Solo Violin In 1715, famed Italian luthier Antonio Stradivari constructed what would become one of his most legendary violins. In 1817, the violin was bequeathed to Polish virtuoso violinist Karol Lipinski, who inspired many works for the instrument. In 2008, the ‘Lipinski’ Strad arrives in the hands of Frank Almond, through an anonymous donor. In 2013, Almond releases A Violin’s Life, an album that traced the provenance of the ‘Lipinski’ Strad. In January 2014, a shocking twist in the violin’s life occurs: following a concert, Frank Almond is tasered by an assailant and the ‘Lipinski’ Strad is stolen. An FBI pursuit results in its recovery a few weeks later, and media coverage goes viral, including national TV coverage as well as features by Vanity Fair, NPR, BBC, and many more. And now, in May 2016, Frank Almond releases A Violin’s Life Vol. 2. The ‘Lipinski’ Strad lives on!

A notable exception to this trend is provided by the two sonatas for cello, which are separated by some 21 years and reflect the composer’s changing circumstances: the first is the product of a young man serving notice of his scholarship and maturity, while the second is the work of an older man writing at the peak of his powers with remarkable vigor and intensity.
