Overview We’re Already Gone exceeds expectation in instrumentation, performance and songcraft. Keyboards, a brass section, melodica and harp solos move the album forward, and the rhythm section’s time spent on the road is evident. It swings! Like its predecessors, We’re Already Gone is a raw album and a collision of styles. It occasionally dips into the same pool of influence as other material from TBG, but that’s where the similarities end.The songs, for the most part, are darker – though there are still trademark moments of melodic beauty. Mostly, it is a collision of structure and riff; a mix of art, dub and rock.
Press Quotes “I have had an opportunity to play with the Beautiful Girls over the last few years and they always connect with a cool, groovin’, summertime vibe!” – G Love “They’re catchy, familiar, but still refreshing.” – The Drum Media (Australia) “With the melodies of Ben Harper and the sheer power of Bob Marley in moments, you can listen to the vocals of Mat McHugh all night.” – Snap (Australia)

NAIL WELCOMES LOVEPUMP UNITED
TO ITS ROSTER
Founded by the mysteriously affectionate Glitter Pals in 2004, Lovepump United quickly grew out of control – and lots of coarse new facial hair. The roster additions of Genghis Tron and AIDS Wolf insured that LPU would be more than your typical pretty-faced vanity project. For the boys at Lovepump United, the future holds a solid commitment to more terror, insanity, and visual signs of maturity.
Overview In April 2003, the members of Montreal’s AIDS Wolf were drawn into a whole by psychic forces unknown. Since coming into existence, AIDS Wolf has composed an inestimable amount of songs and found themselves performing alongside the likes of Daughters, Death From Above 1979, Les Georges Leningrad and Made In Mexico, as well as raising a ruckus at CMJ’s Music Marathon. Voted 10th Most Pretentious Band by the Montreal Mirror’s Readers’ Poll, AIDS Wolf are known far and wide for terrifying, ear-splitting performances that include improvisation, audience participation, freedom, truth and biting. Although they have no commercial recordings available, the band has received an unprecedented amount of attention from the New York Times, Pitchforkmedia, CMJ, Associated Press and more. Unleashed at last, AIDS Wolf present The Lovvers LP, the definitive soundtrack for telepathic life-force warriors everywhere.

NAIL WELCOMES REDDER RECORDS

TO ITS ROSTER
Redder Records have been the purveyors of many forms of well-crafted rock since 2003. Like ruthless contagions, Redder releases tend to wend their way ‘round the globe to end up in the shaky hands of kids struggling with record-aday habits. The label has had the opportunity and foresight to work with artists that have either brought a long history of critical acclaim, or have blossomed into such a position – and much more can be expected from the diverse, hard-working Redder crew of Astoria, Queens!
Overview “Kind of Like Spitting’s…clever lyrics somehow manage to be matter-of-fact, confessional, normal and extraordinary, all at once…some really exceptional songs here, mostly fragile, predominantly acoustic tunes with voice-almost-cracking intensity.” – Skyscraper Singer and songwriter Ben Barnett is the base of Kind of Like Spitting and such a talented, prolific individual that, while he may not have the best luck, he certainly manages to create some of the most overwhelmingly powerful songs of love and torture imaginable – again and again and again. He seems to write songs in the way that one breathes – consistently, constantly, and as a necessity – pouring albums from his mouth, head and hands multiple times a year, each one as essential and moving as the next. Barnett’s songs can rotate between somber, solemn solo pieces and explosive, full-band rock. Amongst all the styles handled by Kind of Like Spitting, though, lie a solid punk ethic and the ability for immense lyrical depth. Within the last couple of years, Barnett has uncharacteristically stored his Kind of Like Spitting songs, allowing them to gradually gestate, change and move into each other until two full albums beauOverview The Thrill of the Hunt tifully together: In the (released by HUSH Records) Thrill are of the Hunt. Sink or Swim brings five new songs of absolutely beautiful, haunting melancholy from Summer at Shatter Creek. The moniker represents one Craig Gurwich, whose captivating and sincere pop music has been crafted into two amazing previous releases, both on Absolutely Kosher. On this EP, Gurwich’s twinkling piano, ghost-chorus back-up wails, and gorgeous presentation of vocal abilities fill the stereo in such a way that an overwhelming amount of elements cannot: with pure, basic song.

Tiny Amps’ quirky and relaxed but propulsive style of guitarbased rock felicitously hearkens to your all-time favorites, bringing an air of early ’90s indie rock but wrapping each note in something novel that the present musical climate desperately requires. Despite their diminutive moniker, Tiny Amps insist that the amps they play through are actually “really, really huge” – but whatever the size, they bring a direct, infectious rock sensibility that critics have compared to that of Pavement and Archers of Loaf.

The City on Film had its humble beginnings in 1998 as the solo project for Robert Nanna during an extended break between tours. With a smoother, softer version of his previous work as lead singer/guitarist of Braid (Polyvinyl) and Hey Mercedes (Vagrant), Nanna has drawn comparisons to everyone from Elliott Smith and Bright Eyes to Jawbox and The Killers. American Diary definitively proves his songwriting prowess as it melds infectious pop melody, dreamy introspection, and even a bit of country stomp.

“Paradigmatic bedroom pop featuring chiming guitar and breathy vocals…” – Epitonic
“Kicks it Little Wings-style…displays a pawnshop sweetness.” – Pitchforkmedia
The long-awaited debut solo album from former Kissing Book member Andrew Kaffer maintains the sweepingly romantic crooner aspects that made the bedroom lounge of KB so successful, but adds some new skills: rhythmic laptop loops, fingersnapping, falsetto hip-hop and songs based on complex staccato acoustic guitar chords.
Brendon Massei (Viking Moses) introduces us to his incredibly talented friend, shy songbird Spencer Kingman. Massei, who has firmly established himself as a leading contemporary in American folk and rock (freak or no) has toured with Cat Power, Mountain Goats, Joanna Newsom, Will Oldham and more.

Overview “Def Harmonic create hip-hop that routinely sounds like it’s from another world – P-Funk grooves alongside thumping, club-oriented beats and straightforward rapping.” – Splendid Def Harmonic was formed in 1999 when MC and producer JTodd hosted a local hip-hop weekly at the now defunct Stork Club in Milwaukee. MC Lunaversol9 walked through the door, picked up the microphone and dropped lyrics. JTodd asked her to enter the fold and Def Harmonic was born. Overview “The four M’s call Chicago home, but with their fuzzy riffs and psychedelic melodies, they could be mistaken for a bunch of British tunesmiths by the names of Ray Davies, Damon Albarn, Marc Bolan, and John Lennon.” – Spin Towards the end of the summer of 2000, sweating in a dingy basement in the middle of Chicago’s Ukrainian Village, four young men set up some microphones and recorded a song. In postmodern fashion, they called themselves The M’s.Two years and 30-odd songs later, The M’s walked down the street to Semaphore Studios and produced a four-song EP complete with hairy riffs, heavy breathing and blasting horns. The M’s were added to bills with groups as varied as The French Kicks, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Wilco, Rainer Maria, Brian Jonestown Massacre, The Electric Six and The Walkmen. Originally planned as three separate EPs, the band’s full-length debut went on to gain high praise from all levels of press.Their next album is slated to hit in late February on Polyvinyl Records and will no doubt continue the momentum of this Chicago four-piece.

Overview “With a name like Crush Kill Destroy, you might be expecting something hard and aggressive, loud and jarring. What you get is a slow Codeine-like math rock groove sliding underneath spoken word, like June of 44 jamming with Arab Strap…the vocals are sharpened with an edge of menace, while the instruments keep a tight rein on the energy, letting the chaos out in short bursts of hardcore rage before moving back into a Slint-like solitude.” – Big Takeover

Not many bands can state their mission in their name alone, but Chicago’s Crush Kill Destroy are up for the challenge.Their moniker isn’t an expression of hardcore violence, but rather a theory put into action: they play aggressive, confident, angular rock music that can crush, kill and destroy any preconceived notions about what rock music’s structure may be or how it should be attacked. Dual guitars strangle one another in an almost telepathic fury, the rhythm section proves itself as inventive as it is precise, and the vocals fluctuate from calm assurance to manic energy within a span of seconds. On Valentine’s Day 2006, No Karma Recordings gives the world some loving with the release of Metric Midnight, a spanning, soaring collection that winds and turns down an enigmatic road. Overview After several esoteric self-released EPs, The Seawhores have finally unleashed their debut full-length: Forest will be the first widely available album for Minneapolis’ most enigmatic band. The Seawhores are always changing, working in secret to develop new songs, new multimedia experiences, new technologies and new setups. They meticulously mastermind every move, carefully planning each new metamorphosis. They have more than paid their dues by extensively touring arthouse, basement, gallery and plain old rock venues all across America with musical brethren such as The Melvins, Phantomas, Lightning Bolt, Helios Creed, Gas War, Wolf Eyes, Heroine Sheiks, Pink and Brown, Vaz and The Thrones. They have extended their DIY roots, and are trying to wake up the tired indie rock masses with their own brand of orchestral doom-pop. Originally comprised as a hyper-efficient two-piece, Cody Weigel and Adam Marx employed a wall of unexplainable amplifiers, multimedia interfaces and proprietary devices. Always interested in redefining the traditional rock experience, they incorporated visuals and film vignettes into their performances, even using a large-screen TV in place of a real drummer. Scary, funny and irreverent, some of these visual experiments were reminiscent of early German experimentalist Otto Muhl. The current Seawhores lineup has been rounded out to include two of Minneapolis’ finer musicians – Brady Lenzen and Freddy Votel (ex-Cows, TVBC). This six-track full-length features four songs with all four Seawhores members and includes two tracks featuring special guest musicians Brian Chippendale (Lighting Bolt, Sightings) and Dale Crover of The Melvins!
Press Quotes “The Seawhores make surprises and have mysteries in everything they do. Overview The Chris Danforths are not only a high-five between three incredible musicians, but also an ethereal holy trinity that is the one real Chris Danforth. Pluralizing his full name and using it as the nom de plume for his projects alludes to the kind of musical schizophrenia from which Danfoth suffers. His head is filled with so many sounds, structures and ideas that he is forced to allow each voice to have its turn at the helm. Look Out for the Wolves is the group’s second full-length and, just like their first, they twist genres, moving along with a wide musical vocabulary that dances from hook to drone and back again. Somewhere between OMD and Faust, this album finds Danforth honing his perfectly amalgamated quirk-pop to a more mature conclusion. Combining found sounds, field recordings, synth and guitar-led songs, he crafts lo-fi psych pop that Ink 19 called “an orchestral, angular, epic take on panoramic sunshine music like some long-lost Elephant 6 track calling in from the twilight zone.”
Press Quotes “A real sound-geek album, with melodies playing peek-a-boo with tweeting birds and airplane sound effects. The whole thing plays like a Kierkegaard reading: you have to listen intensely, over and over again, in order to ‘get it.’” – City Pages “An ambitious take on psychedelic pop filtered through analogue synthesizers and sketch-like compositions.” – Ink 19

In the rich, varied and bizarre history of African music, the tragedy of the Ethiopian pop recording industry stands alone. But for the past few years, Buda Records has brought us the Ethiopiques series, showcasing the immense scope of the golden age of Ethiopian music – lovingly assembled, remastered and fully annotated. An outstanding pianist and a remarkable composer, Emahoy Tsegué-Maryam Guébrou (now a Christian nun in a Jerusalem monastery) once recorded her own piano solo works, steeped in Ethiopian culture. The rich, personal poetry of these songs brings to mind Claude Debussy or Carlos d’Alessio’s “India Song” – a rare curiosity indeed, with beautiful melodies and a charming interpretation.

Ecstatic North Indian raga-inspired minimalism! “Like his hijackings from the modernist corpus, Flynt’s raga rendition of this anthem of military esprit de corps is the act of a renegade; a fierce, quiet, moving gesture of disloyalty to the American empire.” – Signal to Noise
“From 1966, Raga Electric is a piece for detuned guitar and howler monkey vocals, recorded in the wake of a Pandit Pran Nath concert, although it sounds as much like an exorcism of his spirit as a celebration of it…it’s quite a sound.” – The Wire

“Homespun Americana and modern classical music aren’t as far apart as one might think. “Flynt’s vocals land somewhere between Holy Modal Rounder Peter Stamfel and a middle register Neil Young, and the recordings conjure visions of an electrified Dock Boggs with a political axe to grind.” – The Wire

Alternately dramatic and humble, dynamic and hushed, Short’s ethereal style is full of mystery and portent. Overview “2003 has been an astonishingly strong year for Canadian indie rock…[but] it is Young and Sexy, with their facetious moniker and their relaxed, breezy brand of twee pop, who really emerge as one of the best bands their country has to offer…an innocuous charmer, this album is as pretty as anything you’ll hear these days.” – PopMatters In the summer of 1998, friends and former lovers Paul Hixon Pittman and Lucy Brain were contemplating starting a band. Over the next year, Young and Sexy began making a name for itself playing local Vancouver venues. After several years and many lineup changes, the band was asked to headline the western portion of the CBC Radio 3 Connect the Dots tour in April-May 2004.The tour was a great opportunity for the new band to find its sound and hone new material for their third album, Panic When You Find It. Recorded in bits and pieces between October 2004 & April 2005, Panic is an eclectic affair but is also their most consistent and unified artistic statement. The band has internalized their wide range of influences, capturing a live feel that was missing on earlier albums.

Overview “National Eye plays hypnotic pop that’s relentless with catchy, cleverly repetitive lines, both instrumental and vocal.” – Tape Op
National Eye Roomful of Lions
National Eye’s ambitious second album, Roomful of Lions, is a cathedral of color, noise and conversation – fractured human history mixed with fractured human relations. Where their debut was dense, Lions is expansive, providing a grander sonic architecture for the band’s songs, which offer a more nuanced and ambiguous moral universe. Subjects range from Marvel comics and a childhood bully to a mutinous Nazi plot to assassinate Hitler. No matter how far out they go, the songs are of a piece and describe a world not too dissimilar from our own, full of passion, death, birds, thieves, love and “men who casino.” Some of Philadelphia’s greatest musical persons appear on Lions – Dr. Dog’s Scott McMicken, Eliza Hardy of the gorgeous Buried Beds, Chicago transplant Janet “Evil Janet” Kim, and two of the geniuses behind Like Moving Insects: Todd Starlin and Joshua Marcus.

Making their first appearance in the U.S. at SXSW 2002, it was clear that Petty Booka’s unique performances and alluring style would transcend boundaries. Genre, age and gender have no meaning to a group that mixes it all up as effectively as Petty Booka. For Dancing with Petty Booka, the gals incorporated bossa nova, samba and dancehall beats into their covers in addition to recording their first original tune, written for them by Keitaro Tanami of the Pizzicato Five.

Overview “You can count me among those who thought that indie rockers reclaiming the sounds of ’70s AM radio was a lousy idea…yet the clunky white-boy soul, sweet mellow electric piano, and bold grabs at aching grandeur on Baby Teeth’s full-length debut move me in a way that post-Elton John slickfests never do... there’s real pop ambition on the record, but it has a human scale.” – Chicago Reader This EP finds Chicago’s arch indie-popsters Baby Teeth in an expansive mood as each member is challenged to compose a song with the same title. The results range from an epic glam ballad of a junkie in decline to the surefire roller-disco anthem of 2006, and showcase the band growing in stunning new directions.

Three songs into The Rum Diary’s new album, We’re Afraid of Heights Tonight, you might find yourself asking, “Is this a mix CD?” When the group set out to record their latest release, they wanted to craft “an album” – a true portfolio of songs with a unique variance strung together by an uncommon thread. They questioned the albums of today and pondered the classics of yesteryear. They recruited Paul Jenkins (Black Heart Procession/Three Mile Pilot) and Tim Mooney (American Music Club) to lend a hand in the studio, and after ten months of hard work they emerged with Heights – an album that guides listeners along a narrow trail through valleys of dense fog, whispering grasslands and treacherous mountain passes.

Featured Artists Ezra Feinberg – acoustic, electric & 12-string guitars, mandolin, bass, keyboards, percussion, vocals Tim Soete – backing vocals, 12-string solo Tim Green – synthesizer, piano, strings, guitar
Overview Out of San Francisco, Citay is a new project by Ezra Feinberg, formerly of Piano Magic (4AD), in collaboration with Tim Green and Tim Soete, both of The Fucking Champs (Drag City). After spending six years in the indie rat race of Williamsburg, Ezra Feinberg moved to San Francisco to record with Tim Green of The Fucking Champs, a veteran of the SF scene who moved to the Bay Area after spending time as a member of seminal punk band Nation of Ulysses.Tired of asymmetrical haircuts and hipsters talking about Gang of Four, Feinberg arrived on the West Coast searching for those moments of rock history that had fallen off the radar, and work on Citay began in the fall of 2004. Citay, named for the way the word “city” is often sung, is a powerful, elegiac blend of seemingly disparate musical elements.Taking its cue from the dramatic song structures of 1970s AM rock, Citay combines Led Zeppelin acoustic guitars and organs with soaring Thin Lizzy guitar harmonies and lush, choral voices. The influences of early Mike Oldfield, Roy Harper, John Fahey, Metallica and Japanese band Ghost can be heard as well. The sound is rounded out by the breezy, distinctly a psych-ed vocal harmony of The Byrds and The Beach Boys, adding a blissed-out flavor to the blend, and the result is something entirely new. With smoking dual leads, Citay will soon be rocking kids from coast to coast.
Press Quotes “For Citay, heaven is filled with the spooky acoustic guitars, mandolins & organs of Led Zeppelin, the massive twin guitars of Thin Lizzy, and the blissed-out psychedelic vocal harmonies of The Byrds. This music is beautiful, and seriously original.” – Village Voice

Featured Artists Diane Cluck – guitar, vocals, piano, harmonium
Overview This deluxe double CD, priced the same as a single disc, pairs Diane Cluck’s second full-length Macy’s Day Bird with the EP Black with Green Leaves. Macy’s Day Bird was released in an elaborate, tiny handmade edition in late 2001, and Black with Green Leaves followed almost exactly one year later. They are arguably Cluck’s most compelling, immediate and striking works, and it was these two recordings that originally caught Important Records’ ears in 2001. Macy’s Day Bird/Black with Green Leaves, newly restored and mastered by James Fei, is highly recommended to the many new fans that picked up on Diane Cluck after the release of 2005’s Oh Vanille/Ova Nil. The attentive listener will find her hauntingly clear voice weaving melodies of love, pain and city life through sparse arrangements of piano, acoustic guitar and harmonium.
Press Quotes “This record is by my favorite singer/songwriter in all of New York City. I’m so happy to be alive at the same time she is because I get to see her perform. It’s her and guitar, or her and piano, or her and harmonium. Her lyrics are so good; when I play this for people they stop doing everything and are quiet for hours after.” – Devendra Banhart “Just a voice, a guitar, and some of the most spellbinding words you’ll hear anywhere.” – Mojo
Selling Points • This double CD is housed in a deluxe gatefold cardboard sleeve of the highest quality and priced modestly as a single CD • Previous album on Important was met with much acclaim, named Underground Album of the Month by Mojo • Diane Cluck is recognized as a key figure in the downtown NYC folk scene and has been praised in the press by Devendra Banhart and many other popular folksters • Cluck has toured Europe and the U.S. extensively in the last few years, playing with CocoRosie, Devendra Banhart, Genesis P-Orridge, Kimya Dawson, Herman-Dune, Barry Bliss, Jeffrey Lewis and many more • Appeared alongside Iron & Wine, Vertiver, Joanna Newsom, Six Organs of Admittance, White Magic, Matt Valentine, CocoRosie, Vashti Bunyan and many more on the 2004 Golden Apples of the Sun compilation, called “essential” by Mojo • International press and radio mailing by Important Records • Ads will run in The Wire, Signal to Noise, E/I and CMJ

Overview “…An absolute beauty: an out-of-nowhere set of solo thought scored for open-tuned 12-string guitar, harmonium, radio, bells, ride cymbal and floor tom.” – Volcanic Tongue When UK native James Blackshaw plays his 12-string, something spiritual takes place – the unassuming 23-year-old is transformed into a guitar god whose name belongs alongside the likes of Jack Rose, Steffen Basho-Junghans and Glenn Jones.Time after time, Blackshaw hits out of the park, consistently breaking boundaries in what could be conceived as a somewhat limited medium. O True Believers is the latest in a string of impressive releases, all with their own mood and inspiration. Consisting of mainly solo 12-string acoustic guitar played in a finger-picked style not dissimilar to Robbie Basho, Blackshaw has devised new tunings and new techniques, both of which are in full display here. The album is occasionally embellished with other instruments, such as the Hindustani tamboura and a specially tuned psaltery of Eastern-European origin called a cymbala. This is James Blackshaw at his most vulnerable and sincere, and with that comes two rare and wonderful qualities: truth and freedom.
Selling Points • James Blackshaw has toured and collaborated with Josephine Foster, Peter Wright, Taurpis Tula and Ashtray Navigations; will tour the U.S. in Summer 2006 • Blackshaw has contributed tracks to two forthcoming compilations in 2006, which see him alongside the likes of Six Organs of Admittance, Marissa Nadler, Christina Carter, John Fahey, Robbie Basho and Peter Lang • International press mailing by Important Records • Ads will run in The Wire, Signal to Noise and CMJ

This album is a return to more abrasive, heavier Mouthus territory after forays into acoustic instrumentation and, yes, a Fleetwood Mac cover on their recent Troubleman full-length. Free/tribal percussion spatter ‘n’ clatter duels with endlessly mutating three-chord sludge-riffage beneath thick, poison clouds of delayed-out vocal groan.Truly chock-full of manic bad-mood energy, but psych-droney and resin-soaked enough for the new crop of crunchier noise-heads to nod to as well. Electric guitars strung with duct tape and drums equipped with hundred-year old heads are jettisoned into deep space and dynamited, combusting so vividly that the afterimages soak our retinas with mandalas of interwoven earthworms and beer funnels for hours afterwards. We pass the savings on to YOU!

Overview The Wolfkings exist to throw fire in the face of anyone who believes that the eloquence and mystical nature of music has been lost. Like glimpses of hazy days and memories half-remembered and half-imagined, the songs of The Wolfkings offer up a collective window in which to view the less tangible aspects of life. The best of youth spent indoors, schooling himself in the books of the Age of Anxiety and the films of the Chamber Cinema, Michael Talbott set about building a house of finery from the ground up. Together, Talbott and The Wolfkings make music that wouldn’t sound out of place alongside such varied luminaries as Richard & Linda Thompson, latter-day Tindersticks, Meddle-era Pink Floyd, Beck’s Sea Change, or early Leonard Cohen – essentially, anywhere music has been transformed from the urbane to the transcendental. But take a deep breath before you dive headfirst into this brambly briar, and beware of the surrounding teeth, because they can indeed bite – beware, for The Wolfkings ride tonight!

Overview Paul Bertolino is a well known, behind-the-scenes musician’s musician from Berkeley – a short-list Bay Area session player who has done time fronting The Sleaves, one of San Francisco’s most authentic garage-soul outfits, and is currently playing drums for major label breakout band Persephone’s Bees. On Bertolino’s debut solo effort – a mix of classic baroque, psyche and power pop – each track is a timeless example of pop-rock songwriting at its’ very best, and is enough to hook the most jaded music lover. Bertolino draws from a well that incorporates the best elements of ballsy ’60s jangle-rock, ’70s AM gold, and maybe even a pinch of Radio Shack synth swagger. Almost in spite of that, it’s so solid and proprietary that it refuses to be picked apart into its base elements...try as you might. Come feel the love.
