Press Quotes “…An enthralling collection of beautiful noise grooves.” – Village Voice “Comprised of loops, odd-metered rhythms, scratch-turntable fare and intermittent stabs at humor…Martin is a groove merchant.” – Down Beat “The second M in MMW steps to the front of the live hip-hop game by blazing beats heard round the world. illy B has enough to feed the world; come take a taste of the best soulfood a DJ can find – fresh cooked beats...not like your momma makes.” – DJ Logic “Check the vibe – live drums meet the breakbeat era – you definitely wanna check in with two copies of this joint…illy B flips drum rolls, snare fills, all that ill shit that make breaks so dope. I repeat: two copies.” – DJ Spooky

Featured Artists William Parker – bass, 8-string doson ngoni Todd Nicholson – bass Dave Sewelson – baritone sax, alto sax Omar Payano – congo, güiro, voice Gabriel Nunez – timbale, bongos Luis Ramierez – accordion Isaiah Parker – alto sax
Overview William Parker’s new album, Long Hidden, explores and expands on the ancient DNA/cultural codex that connects Africa to the Americas – reflecting Parker’s long-abiding interest in, and study of, the continental connection between the Manding people of West Africa and the Olmec of ancient Mexico. The album opens with an arrestingly spacious solo bass performance of the traditional hymn “There is a Balm in Gilead,” one of Parker’s favorites, and continues with music from three different sessions. It also features, fully off the grid, four tracks by The Olmec Group, composed of veteran sax player Dave Sewelson, formidable bass player and Billy Bang collaborator Todd Nicholson, and Omar Payano, Isaiah Parker, Gabriel Nunez and Luis Ramierez – all under 23 years old. These four tracks are the crux of the album – mysterious and entrancing sound poetry embracing the Caribbean and Middle Americas via inspiration drawn from the Great Stone Head of the Olmec. This first-edition deluxe package features illustrations and design by John FELL Ryan (Excepter) and liner notes by William Parker.
Press Quotes “…Heading to a place where ecstasy supercedes intellect. A fascinating exploration of multiple sound worlds.” – Alternative Press “A common myth says that holy men must speak in tongues.Take a quick tour through the world of William Parker, and you’ll learn that this high priest of free improvisation can rock ‘n’ roll with the best of ‘em…creating sounds, images and ideas that transcend time and place.” – All About Jazz

Featured Artists Joshua Warren – bass, vocals, keyboards Andy Sells – drums, percussion, guitar Mune Yamakawa – Akai MPC,Yamakawa synth, turntables
Overview 10 tracks that blend old FCS with new FCS! With live energy, Japanese hip-hop & more vocals, Say Go was produced with the dance floor in mind. This direct follow-up to the 2004 FCSSA EP continues FCS North’s energetic style of inspired drumming, rolling low bass, funky italo guitars & clipped synths. Say Go might come as a surprise to longtime FCS North fans. There are vocals, the kick drum will ruin your speakers, and the keyboards, no longer ambient, might threaten your stereo. But whether you’re breaking a sweat or listening with headphones, the rhythm, groove and epic songs are all still here, and the band’s use of cut-up playing and samples continues to push forward. Andy Sells and Joshua Warren started FCS North in 1997. Mune Yamakawa moved to Seattle from Tokyo and has been playing/producing with Sells and Warren since 2001. Members of FCS North have spent time in Satisfact and United Schach Corporation, and DJ’d as AMS + Mugfrosty and FSCS.The group has toured and shared stages with DJ Krush, !!!, Modest Mouse, Garage a Trois, Ztrip and Kid Koala.
Press Quotes “Seattle’s FCS North continue to blur the lines between highbrow rock and hedonistic dance music.” – The Stranger “With their eponymous debut and its aquatic overtones afloat between Weather Report, To Rococo Rot and LTJ Bukem, Pacific Northwest post-rockers FCS North prove themselves fluid.” – XLR8R

Featured Artists Adam Arcuragi, vocals, guitar/Charlie Hall, drums, keyboards,Wurlitzer, backing vocals/Mike Kennedy, guitar, percussion/Janet Kim, guitar, backing vocals/Rick Flom, bass, backing vocals/Eve Miller, cello/Peter Wonsowski, singing saw/Rob Spiece, guitar/Warren Snyder, organ /Michael Spinka, vibraphone/Ryan McLaughlin, guitar, lap steel/Derek Zglenski, bass
Overview In an era where it has become popular for singers to take cover behind band name aliases (Palace, Songs:Ohia, Iron & Wine, Bright Eyes), it has become more of a statement when a songwriter sets out with his real name. For Adam Arcuragi, hiding behind an alias would belie the nature of his songs – highly epic and simultaneously sensitive, intense and subtle. Arcuragi’s debut full-length is an introduction to a bright new lyricist who combines the icy melancholy of Red House Painters, the classic Americanism of Tom Petty, the sincerity of Elliott Smith and literature references typical of the Mountain Goats. His unique form of free-flowing introspective lyrics and compelling harmonies are certain to make fans of those who like My Morning Jacket, The Shins and The New Pornographers. Recorded in fits and starts over the past three years, Adam Arcuragi features contributions from members of Audible, Mazarin, Bitter Bitter Weeks, National Eye, Matt Pond PA, The Rachel’s, The Trouble with Sweeney and Ink & Dagger. A demo version of “The Song the Sinner Sings” was featured on the Urban Outfitters/Filter tsunami relief compilation alongside rare tracks from Interpol, Death Cab for Cutie, Franz Ferdinand and more.
Press Quotes “As [Arcuragi’s] music reminded me of Hayden and Nick Drake upon the first few listens, it hit me that there was another aspect I was missing. Adam takes the songwriting formula of other folk mainstays, but layered underneath are haunting melodies and noises.” – IndieWorkshop.com “[Goes] nuts with references to bones, Jesus and grass. Not for those with an aversion to the mellow.” – Philebrity
Selling Points • Featured on Urban Outfitters/Filter compilation alongside Interpol, Death Cab for Cutie, Franz Ferdinand and more • Backing band features members of Audible, Mazarin, Bitter Bitter Weeks, National Eye, Matt Pond PA, The Rachel’s, The Trouble with Sweeney and Ink & Dagger • Previous split EP with Audible (Father Records) now out of print • Full national/tour press by Pitch Perfect PR (Silver Jews, Iron & Wine/Calexico) • Full college radio service and web promotion by High Two • Ads will run in Magnet, Copper Press, Harp, No Depression, DIW, Pitchforkmedia and Insound

Leaving Rouge Elsewhere File Under: Alt Rock CD: GDP 21 (O) NOT AVAILABLE IN CANADA

Featured Artists Sean Madigan Hoen – vocals, guitar Nick Marco – drums Sean Bondareff – bass Mark Victor – guitar
Overview After releasing the White Houses EP in 2004, Leaving Rouge locked themselves inside a Detroit warehouse for over a year to write and compose. The result is Elsewhere, the band’s third release and first fully realized album. Elsewhere sees Leaving Rouge focusing more on songs and less on the atmospherics and textures that marked their first releases, resulting in a rich, well-crafted piece of Midwestern damage (à la The Replacements or Red House Painters) with nods to indie rock’s roots (The Smiths, REM) while retaining the band’s hard-earned sound and naked lyricism.
Press Quotes “Caught somewhere between the frustration and anguish of Pearl Jam and the inconsolable heartbreak of Nick Drake, White Houses is, in fact, a memorable affair; a fleeting yet poignant encounter that, given the chance...promises not to leave you unmoved.” – Amplifier “Leaving Rouge adeptly twist atmospheric melodies and distorted guitars into a cocoon full of Hoen’s richly descriptive vocals. Sonically, they rise, fall, twist, contort, spiral and contract with breathtakingly perfect symmetry.” – Ink 19 “With its wafting melodies and patient hooks, White Houses is light, genial and entrancing enough to demand ears of all ages – it’ll win with emo twentysomethings as well as their mid-management parents.” – Real Detroit Weekly
Selling Points • Second full-length following the success of 2004’s White Houses EP • Upcoming tours of Midwest & Northeast; full U.S. tour planned for late 2006 • Have shared the stage with Avril Lavigne, Karate, Dave Dondero and more • Acclaimed tracks appear on Deep Elm’s This is Indie Rock (2005) and Greyday’s 20 Nights (2005) • Initial 2000 pressed will include special web release promotion • Full CMJ, AAA and specialty commercial radio campaign by SPECTRE • 500+ piece press campaign • Ads will run in Magnet, Amplifier, CMJ NMM, Make, New Reform and more

Featured Artists Casey Dienel – piano, vocals Peter Bitenc – bass Ben MacDonald – guitar Christopher MacDonald – percussion Juliet Nelson – cello Mike McDuck Olson – pocket trumpet, mellow-horn Ethan Philbrick – cello Rachel Price – vocals, amusing quips Djim Reynolds – banjo Michael Winograd – clarinet, saxophone
Overview Even those who think they’ve heard it all haven’t heard anything like Casey Dienel. Wind-Up Canary is literally her first-ever recording, and it finds her matching prodigious musical talent with a lyrical point-of-view that’s wild, odd and sharp as brass tacks. A thousand quirky songwriters couldn’t imitate her style if they tried. Wind-Up Canary is the result of an invitation to record for free at an abandoned caretaker’s house on a farm in Massachusetts. With some friends and a piano borrowed from the lobby of a local hotel, these songs were recorded in the dead of winter 2004. Dienel finished the songs and put them away, figuring that was that. It wasn’t until a friend of a friend sent a copy to HUSH that any plans were made to release Canary to the world at large!
Press Quotes “[For] arresting young singer/pianist Casey Dienel…comparisons with the Dresden Dolls are inevitable, but she’ll get over them. Note to local college DJs: will make pleasant segue into Jolie Holland, CocoRosie or Joanna Newsom.” – Boston Phoenix “With her witty sincerity, Casey Dienel writes songs that meander into their own form…while she has the gentle nuances that make Joanna Newsom immediately distinctive, she sings with a power that’s at least equally reminiscent of Olivia Newton John.” – Performer Magazine
Selling Points • Coverage is already confirmed for NPR’s All Songs Considered, Jane (photo spread), CMJ (feature), Amplified, Giant and Boston Phoenix • Touring throughout 2006 • Casey Dienel was featured on the cover of Performer Magazine in late 2005 • Publicity by 230 Publicity (The Decemberists, Fiery Furnaces) • College radio service by AAM • Service to a list of over 50 webzines and blogs • Ads will run in Magnet, Resonance,Venus, Under the Radar, Pitchforkmedia, Skyscraper, Rockpile, Big Takeover and more

Overview The Gena Rowlands Band follows their Lujo debut Le Merde et Les Etoiles with a joint recording with Anti-Social Music called The Nitrate Hymnal, taken from the hit indie opera of the same name. Anti-Social Music is a collective of musicians and composers from New York that includes members of the Hold Steady (French Kiss), Ida (Polyvinyl), Gutbucket (Cantaloupe) and World/Inferno Friendship Society (Gern Blandsten). The two bands met three years ago during the creation of the original production of a multimedia opera by Bob Massey and David Wilson. The opera, inspired by 50 years of home movies given to Massey by his grandfather, told the fictional story of a couple who obsessively filmed their own lives. For this recording, the score was cut into songs and reorchestrated, then recorded in three days powered by passion and caffeine.
Press Quotes “The music could qualify as chamber pop if it had any pretense of wanting to be pop – instead the violas, vibes, clarinets and cellos drift along behind Massey’s wine-stained baritone, forming a sort of stream-of-consciousness backdrop that drifts in and out of dissonance, occasionally dissolving to a minimalist wisp.” – Pitchforkmedia “Tragic, hilarious, brilliant writing.” – Pittsburgh Post-Gazette “Beautifully dissonant; unsettling and enrapturing in equal measures…succeeds on pretty much every level.” – Splendid
Selling Points • The original Nitrate Hymnal production brought together a hybrid orchestra of classical and post-punk musicians including members of Circus Lupus (Dischord), Out_Circuit (Lujo) and Crownhate Ruin (Dischord) • ASM members also participate in Gutbucket,The Hold Steady, Ida, Songs:Ohia, New York City Opera and much more • Gena Rowlands Band members have played with Fugazi, Mary Timony, Ida and Tsunami; they have toured with Enon, Dismemberment Plan and Andrew Bird • ASM recently started a commissioning program in which they will collaborate with avant hip-hoppers Dalek, experimental rocker Warn Defever and more • Press campaign by Team Clermont; radio promotion by Tricycle PR • Featured MP3s on MySpace, Pure Volume, Insound and Pitchforkmedia • Ads will run in Vice, Modern Fix, Amplifier, Copper Press, Skyscraper, Big Takeover, Skratch, Punk Planet, Pitchforkmedia and more

Overview All Systems Go! are back with a new album so beautiful and mighty that it could only be named Mon Chi Chi. But why the long, lonely wait? After all, it’s been more than three years since 1999’s self-titled debut.Well kids, the story is… After original bassist and contributing songwriter Frank Daly left the band (due to a hatred of touring), the remaining three members vowed they would not record until they found their missing link.To this end, they played with many different, talented men, but somehow it was never quite right. And then, one day, there was Tom D’Arcy, a young man who could play bass like an old pro, sing with the best of them, and write pop hits as well! Mon Chi Chi was recorded at famed stoner chateau Donner & Blitzen by Daniel Ray (Ramones, Misfits, Entombed) in two weeks and captures a band at the peak of their powers doing what they love.
Press Quotes “Accomplished, eclectic and packed with wonderful songs, this is the old dogs teaching the pups how to do the tricks RIGHT.” – Kerrang “All Systems Go are on full-throttle, delivering blistering rock anthems... Mon Chi Chi is a valuable lesson in how to write good stimulating rock songs without the burden of a genre boundary.” – Drowned in Sound “For any fan of the Descendents or Big Drill Car school of punk rock. I wish there were more bands like this.” – Punk Rock Parents “With all the slutty chick singers, boy bands, ‘70s garage rock bands and Blink 182 wannabes that are being thrown at you, this album is a refreshing diversion.” – PunkBands.com

Overview Pepe & The Bottle Blondes was created in February 1997 to bring back the “Copacabana”-style dinner theater enhanced with the percussion and beat of Latin rhythms. An eclectic ensemble of saxophones, congas, percussion, trumpets and three-part harmonies combine talent and visually arresting performances that echo the indulgence of the 1950s nightclub chic. Pepe Raphael’s piquant pulsations have taken him from Madrid (where he was born) to New York to Portland (where he now lives). Raphael has performed leading roles with Music Theatre of Oregon, the Musical Theatre Company and the Portland Opera. He successfully blends dance, opera and musical theatre with his original songwriting and comedic wit to deliver a fresh and innovative performance. Nouveau Latin and swing with a humorous twist, Pambrosia is beautifully produced and totally made for dancing. In a time when music is trying to define life, Pepe & The Bottle Blondes want you to get up and shake your booty with songs sung in a variety of languages including French, Spanish, Russian, Caló (Gypsy Spanish) and English.
Press Quotes “Five years have passed since Pepe & The Bottle Blondes issued their last album, Latenight Betty. That’s enough time to forget how Pepe, the flamboyant, cheeky crooner, used his voice to express a driving urgency, one that can get your hips to rotate and your libido to levitate. Now the Madrid native and his band have returned to turn up the heat, releasing a new recording that evokes a Latin-influenced robustness, nutty flavors and a hint of melodrama.” – Willamette Week “If you’ve never seen Pepe & The Bottle Blondes, then you are missing one of the truly best live acts in all of Oregon. This twelve-piece Latin/swing band will have you swaying to their repertoire of tangos, boleros, rumbas, sambas, salsa and many other exciting dance forms.” – Best of Oregon Music Festival

Overview The Green Arrows, led by the immortal Zexie Manatsa, dominated the Zimbabwean music scene in the 1970s.This extraordinarily progressive group took the country by storm, fusing the different rhythms of the region into one unique and ebullient sound. The Green Arrows, “discovered” by celebrated South African producer West Nkosi, were the first Zimbabwean band to record an LP, which was released in February 1976.The band was so popular in the ‘70s that when Zexie Manatsa got married, a crowd of about 60,000 thronged Rufaro Stadium, and some of the performers at his wedding included Oliver Mtukudzi and Thomas Mapfumo. This exciting compilation presents 20 critical tracks that the Green Arrows recorded from 1974-1979, all painstakingly remastered. The song “Musango Mune Hangaiwa” still holds the record for the longest stay at #1 in Zimbabwean music history! Includes a carefully prepared 24-page booklet absolutely overflowing with a complete history of the band (edited by renowned critic Banning Eyre), a full detailed discography, and numerous extremely rare photographs and artifacts.

Overview “…Continues to draw inspiration from a mythic American heartland, mining the rich vein of iconography inscribed by countless dime store novels and Saturday matinees…the sound of this imaginary landscape is the classic accompaniment of pedal steel, Mariachi brass and lonesome percussion. The idea of an ersatz soundtrack is well-worn, yet the musicianship here is so accomplished and the atmosphere so vividly rendered that any clichés are avoided.” – PBS.org
Fazzini Sulphur, Glue the Star
Locust is pleased to welcome West Yorkshire artist Fazzini aboard their growing roster of new outre rock & inward psych folk artists. Sulphur, Glue the Star is Fazzini’s debut (following long-running stints as 1/3 of the acclaimed trio A Small Good Thing) and it’s an enchanted song cycle detailing a rich interior world of homegrown lullabies and attic songs that eerily drift through tales of ghostly encounters, underwater dreamscapes, morbid jealousies and karmic return. To our ears, Sulphur, Glue the Star is at once one of the most elliptical, playfully warm, and brilliantly hopeful records to emerge this year.

Overview “Wonderfully fragile, childlike recordings: beginner’s mind or luck, backed by a fierce determination not to produce anything remotely resembling traditional Indonesian music.” – The Wire Metal Notes resuscitates a long-lost, decades-old cassette-only release by the great New York collective Gamelan Son of Lion and brings to the fore the incredible metallic drones of a group whose innovative minimal music has rightfully earned them a place among the likes of La Monte Young, Tony Conrad, Steve Reich & Charlemagne Palestine – to name a few. At almost 80 minutes, this collection of eight songs is nothing if not totally spellbinding & hypnotic. Overview “More than thirty years after the death of Albert Ayler, Flaherty and Corsano’s music is the most compelling evidence I’ve heard in some time that music like this still needs to be played.” – Dusted The Beloved Music is the most thoroughly realized blueprint for a post-hardcore take on improvised jazz to date from the duo of legendary long-serving New England saxophonist Paul Flaherty and young firebrand drummer Chris Corsano. Forsaking the call-and-response modes of countless improvising ensembles, the duo deal more in a simultaneity of sound – an elemental non-stop gush of ideas, rhythms and epiglottal forms that at points feels like a small-group response to the orchestral conceptions of the Peter Brötzmann and John Coltrane big bands. Between collaborations and tours with Wolf Eyes, Nels Cline (Wilco), Joe McPhee, Six Organs of Admittance, Dream/ Aktion Unit (Jim O’Rourke, Thurston Moore) and their own band Cold Bleak Heat (Greg Kelley, No Neck Blues Band’s Matt Heyner), Flaherty and Corsano have coalesced and elated serious jazzbos alongside noise fans and freak-folk followers.

Overview “The music, like the wit and whimsy of singer Alex Lukashevsky, is at once alien and familiar; accessible yet difficult to wrap your head around.” – Montreal Mirror
Alex Lukashevsky Connexions
For some 10 years, Alex Lukashevsky has been filling Toronto clubs with surreal sounds and wondrous words, most notably as bandleader for boisterous improv-rock ensemble Deep Dark United. But as a solo performer, Lukashevsky plays with silence instead of noise, and this new album is a document of a solitary man having a private conversation with his instrument. Recorded over the span of two years by Sandro Perri and Jeff McMurrich, Connexions features instrumental accompaniment from the Deep Dark United extended family (saxophonist Brodie West, bassist/flautist Ryan Driver, clarinetist Julia Hambilton and lap-steeler Myk Freidman). But here, their subtle contributions help illuminate the qualities that were sometimes obscured in the band’s circus of cacophony: Lukashevsky’s incomparably soulful, cigar-smoky voice, his amorphous approach to guitar playing and his profound lyrical witticisms.

Overview “Spellbinding in its complete originality.” – Venus In between a massive national tour with a nine-piece band in support of The Getty Address and relocating to Brooklyn, chief Dirty Projector Dave Longstreth has written an EP’s worth of crazy new songs. New Attitude is a refreshingly pared-down record – simple, beautiful and focused. It is dominated by the sound of chiming microtonal guitars, sub-bass dragon breaths, a sextet of cellos and double-basses – and, most of all, Longstreth’s singing, which has never been so varied or so wonderfully weird.

Overview “Beautiful, glistening rock with sullen and melodic overtures like violent, emotional windstorms; a shoegazer-influenced spin on experimental Top 40 radio.” – Lost at Sea In the summer of 1998, longtime friends and bandmates William Seidel, Ryan Weber and Brian Zimmerman met with Eric Osterman and founded the Milwaukee band Camden. Soon after forming, Camden recorded their first EP with Chris Rosenau (Telecognac, Loomis) in Spring 1999 and began touring with bands such as Pele, The Gloria Record and Antarctica. In December 1999, they recorded the well-received Reel Time Canvas (Grand Theft Autumn) with Chris Walla (Death Cab for Cutie). Throughout 2000, Camden toured with Death Cab for Cutie and Promise Ring while headlining a few tours of their own. They recorded four of the six tracks on Pieces of Places with Chris Walla and then suddenly found themselves without a guitarist. Hello and welcome to Kickball’s new album, ABCDEFGHIJKickball. Kickball makes the kind of songs a slow bear might hum while collecting some breakfast berries.Their shit is heavy like mice whispering in kitchen cupboard caves. But with this, their third album, the slow bear and whispering mice have started to beat it up much faster, and Olympia’s Kickball has created a dirt-stomping dinosaur that comes bearing the gifts of Lisa Schonberg’s rattlesnake drums ticking like bombs that never explode, Jacob Wilson’s guitars like pebbles bouncing around in glass jars, and Adam Oelsner’s bass like the abominable snowman swinging a gigantic fish onto a pan pipe. It is hard to be sad and cold when Kickball’s songs are around us, lurking in the corners with some ghosts baking treats.

Featured Artists David J – vocals, bass, acoustic guitar, producer
Overview David J began his illustrious career as a founding member of Bauhaus, one of the most influential British bands of the 1980s. Following their termination in ‘83, David J joined up with The Jazz Butcher for a brief stint, producing and playing in the group. Then came Love and Rockets, who scored a Gold Record with their first release, Ball of Confusion, and their biggest hit to date with the single “So Alive,” which reached #2 in the U.S. charts in 1989.The band then embarked on a distinctly more experimental style, eliciting great critical acclaim for their three albums released during the 1990s. On Glass, a revamped version of David J’s On Glass compilation, draws from rare 12” EPs released on the Glass label in the mid-‘80s. Some of these tracks sound like preparation for his later songwriting with Love & Rockets! Crocodile Tears and the Velvet Cosh, David J’s second solo outing originally released in 1985, has folky and jazzy elements in direct counterpoint to the glammy goth thud of Bauhaus. Outstanding songwriting displayed on 13 original tracks and 5 bonus cuts.
Press Quotes “On his solo albums, David J (of Bauhaus and Love and Rockets fame) gets back to his art school roots. His haunting sound collages make use of film noir jazz, snippets of Rubber Soul acoustic pop, the disorienting synth textures of early Pink Floyd and, of course, chiaroscuro Goth shadings. These paintings in sound provide an elaborate backdrop for J’s surrealistic spoken word musings.” – Rolling Stone
Selling Points • Bauhaus are on the road and will soon release a new studio album • David J has collaborated with celebrated graphic novelist Alan Moore (From Hell,The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen); renowned author Hubert Selby Jr. (Requiem for a Dream, Last Exit to Brooklyn); producer/musician/label owner T Bone Burnett (Down from the Mountain); MC5 founder/guitarist/vocalist Wayne Kramer and more • Crocodile Tears and the Velvet Cosh, which has been unavailable on CD for many years, includes five bonus tracks never before on CD!

Featured Artists Thom Moore – vocals, guitar, piano Greg Moore – vocals, guitar, bass, keyboards Neal Morgan – occasional drums
Overview Murdered by The Moore Brothers isn’t exactly a “whodunit.” It’s obvious from the first track that these boys are guilty as sin, but fourteen tracks later, there’s no jury in the world that would convict them. Not only do the brothers walk, they might just get a pat on the back and the key to the city. Nobody’s swinging for this crime! And yes, they really are brothers. The oblique folk-pop duo of Thom and Greg Moore has been slaying SF Bay Area audiences for the past few years with unexpected songs and note-perfect fraternal harmonies. Murdered by The Moore Brothers confirms that these boys are bad (and now they’re nationwide)!
Press Quotes “Tempting as it is to invoke comparisons to CS&N and the mid-‘60s folk explosion, they don’t do justice to this follow-up to Tom and Greg Moore’s Colossal Small. Operating in a minimalist vacuum, their engaging songs are melt-in-the-mouth without being twee. Hardly psych, their quiet charms are all about the basics of life…idiosyncratic and utterly immediate.” – Uncut “A near-perfect confluence of folkie charm and indietronic mystery.” – SF Weekly “Compared with The Moore Brothers’ slightly eccentric debut of folky indie rock, there’s a noticeably calmer atmosphere here…with the duo’s instrumentation stripped down to only guitar and Thom and Greg’s pretty harmonies, there’s an uncanny resemblance to folk icons Simon & Garfunkel.Whatever the case, the brothers funnel a path directly from the school of ‘70s folk-pop…lovely.” – All Music Guide

Featured Artists Wayne Rogers – guitar Kate Village – guitar Tom Leonard – guitar Sandra Barrett – vocals Dave Dougan – bass Casey Keenan – drums
Overview The Major Stars finished their most recent U.S. tour in May 2003, and returned in June to make their definitive studio record. They headed to NYC a week later to record the Live in Europa split with Comets On Fire and, unexpectedly, lay low for the next 18 months after losing longtime drummer Dave Lynch and ending up with an empty bass spot when Tom Leonard joined Kate Village and Wayne Rogers in the guitar frontline. In this unraveling of sorts, Major Stars mach two started to come together. Casey Keenan (drummer-turned-guitarist of local pop heros Carlisle Sound) was roped into resuming his place behind the drumkit. Dave Dougan, already a veteran of the band as bass understudy (he was the unfamiliar figure on stage at their Terrastock '02 performance), returned to claim the position permanently. The new sextet is completed by the arrival of lead singer Sandra Barrett, formerly of local art-punk legends LA Drugs. By the time Major Stars finally appeared to universal acclaim in April 2005, the new band was awake and pummeling the locals with renewed fervor. Synoptikon is the newer, heavier Major Stars who have been dumping amp-loads of heft onto Boston stages and are now bringing it to your home audio system. A record like this just wouldn’t sound right on your dumpy little mp3 player!
Press Quotes “The full-on blowout Wayne and Kate fanatics have been drooling for: hardcore lysergic guitar sputter in actual rock form.” – Spin “Listening to anything Major Stars has done is refreshing; there’s a sense that whatever this rock stuff is, they got it right.” – Magnet “Not only is it awe-inspiring to see how founding members Wayne and Kate…have reinvented their already great band right as its future sound would come into question, but to connect with a younger generation of musicians already anointed with the same dank spiritual moisture has resulted in their rawest, most uglified blats of roaring hot jet-black noise under this name, ever.” – Dusted “Simply put, it sounds a cross between Black Sabbath and Bikini Kill…by any measure, it fucking owns.” – Boston Phoenix

File Under: Daniel Johnston
Featured Artists Daniel Johnston – vocals, guitar Jack Medicine – vocals, guitar, keyboards Jade Nuss – lead guitar Chris Bolluck – keyboards
Overview 2006 is sure to be a big year for Daniel Johnston. A Sony Picture Classics documentary of his life is being released internationally on March 31, and is currently in the final stages of being chosen for an Academy Award nomination. His fan base has, once again, swollen substantially, and gallery showings of his artwork in the U.S. and Europe are establishing him as a highly collectible physical artist. The Electric Ghosts is a side project that Johnston and his tour manager/Hyperjinx Tricycle bandmate created while touring the U.S., playing shows and searching for salvation.
Press Quotes “Though one is a Motown legend and the other is an indie schizoid, Daniel Johnston has the same psychic aches and pains as the late Marvin Gaye. ‘The Trouble Man’ was torn between the sacred and profane; Johnston is scared of girls and God. Both men lived with their parents beyond the age of 30.” – Spin “The iconoclastic Johnston has long been a favorite on the alternative rock scene.” – Rolling Stone “He’s my favorite songwriter.” – Matt Groening, creator, The Simpsons “Most songwriters would give anything to have written one song as good as any Daniel Johnston tune…and he has hundreds.” – Dean Ween,Ween
Selling Points • A Sony Picture Classics documentary on Daniel Johnston titled The Devil and Daniel Johnston will open nationally on March 31, 2006 • Daniel Johnston is widely recognized as the father of lo-fi, and has been championed by Tom Waits, Kurt Cobain, David Bowie and Sonic Youth • A tribute to Johnston was recently released featuring Death Cab for Cutie, Mercury Rev, Tom Waits, Beck and Jad Fair • Cover art by famed billboard subverter and Hyperjinx Tricycle member Ron English • Mastered by Shimmy Disc guru and Johnston producer Kramer • Press and radio mailing by Important Records • Ads will run in The Wire, CMJ and Magnet

Special Guests Jarboe, vocals, lyrics/Julia Kent, cello/Lustmord, additional sounds
Overview Following Larsen’s critically and commercially successful full-length Play on Important, we bring you SeieS, housed in a deluxe Important Records cardboard gatefold sleeve and printed on matte paper to look almost as good as it sounds. SeieS is Larsen’s fifth full-length, and work on it began when the band was recording Play. However, where Play was Larsen’s most orchestrated/ambient work, SeieS tends to be quite a bit more song-oriented.Tracks like “The Snow,” “Haula” and “Marzia” are Larsen’s most sinister compositions, disturbing soundscapes that would fit very well in a David Lynch movie. The remaining tracks feature female vocals thanks to ex-Swans chanteuse Jarboe. Also outstanding is the work of Larsen’s beloved cello player and longtime collaborator Julia Kent (of Antony & The Johnsons).
Press Quotes “If you’re troubled by the retrograde state of guitar-based music, Larsen warrants your attention...” – All Music Guide “They center their songs around the dynamics of multiple guitars, which may erupt in buzzsaw staccato and then glide into sublime arpeggiated chords...” – The Wire “This is the soundtrack for bad dreams and good nightmares; a strange, strange world.” – Erasing Clouds
Selling Points • Before signing to Important, Larsen recorded for Michael Gira’s Young God • SeieS contains contributions from Jarboe, Lustmord and Julia Kent, who also plays in Antony & The Johnsons • Larsen’s previous release, the HMKE EP, contained remixes from Norwegian super-producer Deathprod and Origami Galaktika • Press and radio mailing by Important Records • Ads will run in Signal to Noise,The Wire and Brainwashed

Overview “With the whir of keyboards, clicking percussion and the most brittle of voices, Piano Magic create disarmingly pretty and oddly evocative records.” – Alternative Press World-exclusive to Important Records, a five-track EP of brand-new material from London’s Piano Magic! In stark contrast to last winter’s Opencast Heart EP, Incurable brings to mind the mid-‘80s ethereal romanticism of This Mortal Coil, Cocteau Twins and Dead Can Dance. It’s a glacially produced, though spiritually warm, set of songs featuring guest vocals from Angele David-Guillou of Klima, recently signed to the esteemed Peacefrog label, who is currently recording her debut with producer Guy Fixsen (Laika, My Bloody Valentine).
Selling Points • Piano Magic have recently collaborated with ‘60s folk heroine Vashti Bunyan, Low’s Alan Sparhawk and Cornershop’s Ben Ayres • After many releases on big-name independent labels, Piano Magic have a significant international reputation • Piano Magic have performed live with Mogwai, Third Eye Foundation, Low, Fuxa, Amp, Pram, Six by Seven, Alain Bashung and Plone • Many of Piano Magic’s limited edition releases have become highly sought-after collectible artifacts • Press mailing by Important Records • Ads will run in The Wire, Mojo, CMJ and Magnet
