Overview Hailing from mid-city Los Angeles, indie-rap heavyweight 2Mex began building his name at the legendary Good Life Café, which has spawned tons of luminaries such as Freestyle Fellowship, Abstract Rude and Jurassic 5, just to name a few. 2Mex is coined by many as the “hardest working man in underground hip-hop.” Now, he has enlisted the efforts of superior beatmaker/rapper Life Rexall for $martyr. A lifetime member of the L.A. underground legends The Shapeshifters, Life Rexall has reached a new level in the game with his bright-vibed production and thought-provoking word wizardry.
Press Quotes “The Los Angeles hip-hop artist known as 2Mex spouts complex lines of verse as naturally as if he were breathing and his freestyle during live shows defines the ease with which he slides the world’s tensions and issues into narrow caverns of rhyme and repetition.” – Dusted “L.A. underground hero!” – Mean Street

Overview AWOL One is a member of the Shapeshifters, longtime underground hip-hop legends. The L.A.Weekly nailed his style when they called him “beguiling, bizarre and bottomlessly imaginative.” And KRS-One had it pegged when he said “AWOL, you’re true hip-hop for real!” Honestly, where does an MC go from there?
Press Quotes “One of rap’s most original voices…[a] Los Angeles MC who offers up throaty, free association jams about solitude and agony.” – Spin “AWOL One’s beguiling, bizarre and bottomlessly imaginative concept record Souldoubt is one of the year’s best albums, a weird mix of pathos and sci-fi, humor and depression; a collection of stabs at stability in a disturbed world.” – LA Weekly “When this L.A. rapper opens his mouth, laconically cryptic verses tumble out in a drowsily narcotic timbre. The lyrics he rambles are deceptively direct, yet there’s always the nagging feeling that something far more sinister lurks beneath the surface, a hunch he likes to encourage.” – URB

Vijay Iyer Blood Sutra File Under: Avant Jazz CD: PIE 901 (Q) 8 0 871 3 09 01 2 3 NOT AVAILABLE IN CANADA
Featured Artists Vijay Iyer – piano Rudresh Mahanthappa – alto sax Stephan Crump – bass Tyshawn Sorey – drums
Overview The Vijay Iyer Quartet’s stunning follow-up to Panoptic Modes now re-released on Pi Recordings! The word “blood” conjures up a series of symbolically charged associations: health, kinship, identity, race, violence, liquidity and desire. “Sutra” is a Sanskrit term meaning “thread,” and it is used to denote ancient sacred and scholarly texts on the healing arts, mathematics, yoga, Buddhist practice, love, and many other subjects. Thus, this album is the quartet’s multi-threaded conversation on the densely clotted subject of blood, the fluid process of associative meaning and the flowing, pulsating collective meditation. All 12 pieces are Iyer originals – with the exception of “Because of Guns (Hey Joe Redux)” – and feature the band’s rhythmic hallmarks as well as the well-documented interplay between Iyer and Mahanthappa. This generation’s version of Monk and Coltrane, Blood Sutra showcases what is now recognized as one of the most fruitful relationships in jazz today. Reimagining, released in 2005, was listed in JazzTimes’ Top 10 of 2005, and continues the documentation of the duo’s relationship.
Press Quotes “The cohesive group’s ethos is at once reflective and kinetic...this is exciting and eminently listenable stuff, intuitive in bearing and dynamic in execution. An essential for adventurous listeners, [it] could also serve as an ideal introduction to Iyer’s burgeoning oeuvre.” – JazzTimes “Raises Iyer’s writing and playing to the next level...Blood Sutra finds him engaging in sharply diverse but well-balanced forms on each track and coming up a winner every time...not simply a great jazz record, Blood Sutra is a statement of purpose from an artist whose youth stands in contrast to his irrefutable skill.” – Jazziz
Selling Points • Vijay Iyer’s most recent quartet release Reimagining has received critical praise from all corners of the jazz world. It is his highest soundscanned CD and has brought him a much larger audience • Blood Sutra is the second of three critically acclaimed quartet recordings by Iyer. Its re-release is sure to garner interest from new fans of his music who were not previously able to find it in stores • Recent tours by Iyer’s quartet, as well as Raw Materials and his projects with Mike Ladd, have introduced him to a wide audience and a fan base outside of jazz • Service to CMJ and JazzWeek stations • Press service by Pi Recordings • Ads will run in Down Beat, JazzTimes,The Wire and more

Hallelujah Chicken Run Band Take One File Under: Africa CD: ALU 2002 (Q) 6 1 6498 2 0 02 2 0 NOT AVAILABLE IN CANADA
Featured Artists Thomas Mapfumo – drums, vocals Robert Nekati – bass, vocals Patrick Kabanda – drums Daram Karanga – trumpet Wilson Jubane – guitar Abdulah Musa – guitar Joshua Hlomayi Dube – guitar Robson Boora – sax
Overview “The Lion of Zimbabwe,” Thomas Mapfumo, is Zimbabwe’s biggest star, one of the most legendary and best-selling African artists of all time. In 1973, Mapfumo helped form the Hallelujah Chicken Run Band and, for the first time, began to shift his music away from Western-influenced rock and explore the traditional music of his Shona people, transcribing the scale of the traditional instrument mbira (or thumb piano) to guitar with his guitarist Joshua Dube. The HCR Band was one of the first to develop the staccato style of guitar for which Zimbabwe is known today, and was also one the first modern groups to sing in the traditional Shona language – a major act of liberation and an act of protest against the Rhodesian government. This compilation presents 18 of the Hallelujah Chicken Run Band’s biggest and most influential hits, recorded from 1974-1979 and all painstakingly remastered. It also includes a carefully prepared 24-page booklet absolutely overflowing with a complete history of the band (edited by renowned critic Banning Eyre), a full detailed discography, and numerous extremely rare photographs and artifacts.
Press Quotes “Thomas Mapfumo is one of his country’s most influential musicians, with hard-driving rhythms, politically tinged lyrics, and gutsy vocals.” – Music Hound World “Thomas Mapfumo made revolutionary changes in Zimbabwe’s pop-music scene by recording a song for which he’d written his own music. Before Mapfumo, songs in the traditional style were always based on tunes that had been handed down for generations. Mapfumo’s music, chimurenga (‘music of struggle’), became popular during the civil war against white minority rule, but his popularity made the government unhappy [and] in 1977 he was sent to a prison camp for subversion.” – All Music Guide

More Animals of the Arctic An Appendix of Whaling Terms File Under: Alt Rock CD: STD 1026 (L) 6 6 6973 1 0262 4 NOT AVAILABLE IN CANADA
Featured Artists Mike Tapscott – guitars, vocals, drums, bleeps & bloops
Overview Odawas’ songwriter and vocalist, Mike Tapscott, releases a solo album under the More Animals of the Artic moniker! An Appendix of Whaling Terms is a natural progression of The Aether Eater, Odawas’ debut released in 2005 on Jagjaguwar Records. More Animals of The Artic creates a mysterious and alluring atmosphere on An Appendix of Whaling Terms, with overlapping harmonies and dilatory, carefully arranged instrumentation. The songs on An Appendix of Whaling Terms are like waves crashing down upon themselves; elements of minimalism and scarcity give way to a wall of crescendo before falling back again.
Press Quotes “Indiana is a state that’s brimming with intelligent indie rock. Odawas, named after the Odawas Indians native to Beaver Island, are one of those bands. Intriguing stories abound…adopting Dante’s and restructuring their own, Odawas offer some real rich tunes laden with cerebral fossils of music’s past. Lo-fi enthusiasts will be smiling from ear to ear and rushing out to share this journey with their friends, while others who may be scratching their heads…but in the end, we’ll all turn ourselves over to Odawas and allow them to play with our minds and souls.” – Smother “This Indiana-based outfit serves up an appealingly strange blend of eccentricity and accessibility. Odawas definitely are not playing with a full deck, but deal from it, top and bottom, with undeniable skill.” – Dusted “Odawas sound much like fellow low-fi prog-poppers Mt. Eerie. But where Mt. Eerie often sound like a reverberating old growth forest, Odawas appear much grander and remote, as though they are being beamed in as a far away signal.” – Brainwashed

Overview “Few bands consider an ever-changing membership a strength, but the creative burst that Everything, Now! gains with each lineup shift provides bandleader Jonathan David Rogers and his fans with a fresh approach to the group’s experimental material…Rogers is clearly interested in the big picture, as each song on Police, Police will pull you in multiple directions without forsaking his larger vision. The pieces work well on their own, often morphing several times over the course of their run time, but always muster enough stylistic consistency to form a coherent album. That’s why Everything, Now!’s grand pop experiment succeeds.” – Splendid Police, Police! is the debut album from Muncie, IN-based Everything, Now!, an eclectic blend of instruments ranging from guitars, keyboards, broken bottles and tubas to trombones, car crashes, xylophones and vocal chants. Coupled with intelligent lyrics from songwriter Jon Rogers, Police Police draws from a number of different influences and makes a grand statement on pop music.

Featured Artists M. L. Mae – guitar, keys, vocals, programming Ahn Mae – bass, vocals, programming “Chesty” Mae – turntables, keys, vocals, programming Jonathan Esquibel – guitar
Overview mise en abyme’s music has often been called “organic,” an odd but accurate description for this electronic band. Jesquibel is a stimulating mix of electronica and rock, and, as their second release on Marriage Records, firmly establishes mise en abyme’s unique mix of analog instrumentation and digital mutation. mise en abyme’s first album, Crochet, was released on Marriage Records in 2003 and is a mellow collection of sample-driven arrangements. In 2004, mise en abyme created the soundtrack for Gideon Klindt’s video art piece Cat and Cake, which was featured at the 2005 Portland Film Festival. The band was also one of many much-admired groups – including Thanksgiving, Y.A.C.H.T., Little Wings, Mount Eerie, The Blow and White Rainbow – to be collected on Marriage Records’ first compilation, Is Orange Birds. In August 2005, mise en abyme toured with Adrian Orange of Thanksgiving, performing as his back-up band and featuring Orange on drums during their own set.
Press Quotes “Fabulously weird, and just fabulous.” – The Wire UK “...Hitting varied but consistently thoughtful grooves that allow these mechanized compositions to grow into a delightfully organic whole.” – Resonance “…mise en abyme are messing with music standards enough to warrant laborious classifications like ‘post-electronic-post-rock-postlyrical-deconstructed-lounge.’ The band’s latest album, Jesquibel, is a continuous back-and-forth trade between digital and analog that somehow maintains remarkably organic, meticulously splicing samples among skittish beats and both key and guitar melodies that unfurl into (post-) ambience.” – Willamette Week “mise en abyme’s sound is very rich, very refined, and a joy to take part in.” – Tiny Mix Tapes

LKN Postulate I File Under: Alt Rock CD: GDP 22 (L) 6 1 9981 1 7 5 72 2 NOT AVAILABLE IN CANADA
Featured Artists Lauren K Newman – vocals, guitars, bass, drums, various instruments
Overview “Jill-of-all-trades” doesn’t even begin to describe Lauren Kathryn Newman, but it’s going to have to do until a more appropriate word is invented. Newman is the brains and beauty behind LKN; on her third full-length, Postulate I, she wrote and played every single second of music. When she first began writing music, Newman said she wanted to write what she wanted to hear but no one else was doing. The first incarnation of this was Pensacola-based StellaMarie, which began as a 4-track recording and became a touring band that lasted four years. Then, in 2003, Newman moved to Portland and began performing as LKN, writing and recording all of her own material and taking friends & fellow musicians on the road to bring the albums to life. LKN’s recordings are infused with the passion of a woman with a purpose. Postulate I is an epic album full of intensely moving vocals, heavy layered chords and powerful hammering beats that hit right in the gut. From the opening of the first song, LKN’s Postulate I puts the listener in an inescapable trance, and as the album closes with a beautiful and almost unexpected piano ballad, the listener is left wanting more.
Press Quotes “Whether navigating the hazy minimalism of drawn-out guitar feedback, pushing light speed with riff work, or coughing up a gut-wrenching and conflicted wail, Newman’s composition puts the class back in swinging moods and the glamour back in swinging fists.” – Bettawreckonize “A supreme rock performer.” – SXSW.com “Newman let loose a short and intense display of jagged heavy-metal acrobatics, miraculously resuscitating the set as her able rhythm section pushed her on.” – Willamette Week

Norfolk & Western A Gilded Age [Enhanced] File Under: Alt Rock CD: HSH 61 (J) 7 5 1 937 28 41 2 3 NOT AVAILABLE IN CANADA
Featured Artists Adam Selzer – guitar, vocals Rachel Blumberg – drums Dave Depper – bass Amanda Lawrence – viola Cory Gray – trumpet,Wurlitzer
Overview The only band on the circuit with a Victrola in tow, Norfolk & Western has long embraced the mystery of music with a timeworn patina. It is this service to song craft and willingness to step out of the spotlight that has perhaps has kept their name from the being writ with the tallest letters on the marquee. Both Selzer and partner Rachel Blumberg have played supporting roles in other well-known acts, as backing band for like-minded troubadour M Ward, and Blumberg as the winsome drummer for The Decemberists and Laura Veirs. A Gilded Age signals the dawning of a new era for N&W. Selzer has long demonstrated the ability to craft exquisitely defined, sonically arresting songs, but with A Gilded Age (recorded at Type Foundry Studios), he helps Norfolk & Western flex their songwriting muscles with dramatic, singular results. The songs on A Gilded Age cascade dynamically and unrelentingly – elevating the long-form EP format to new heights – from the trademark Victrola opening to the positively invigorating, overdriven guitar and banjo attack of the title track. Perhaps more so than any band in recent memory, Norfolk & Western have distilled their strengths with a collection of songs so undeniably strong they are virtually assured a spot in the canon of indie-folk legends.
Press Quotes “…The kind of album that rewards multiple listens, revealing details slowly but surely, and once it captures you, it’s hard to escape its grasp. But then, it’s hard to imagine why you’d want to.” – Pitchforkmedia “There is an overarching visceral and sustaining appeal to this album.” – PopMatters “A glorious, hallucinatory piece of work.” – All Music Guide

Blanket Music The Love/Love Translation File Under: Alt Rock 2XCD: HSH 58 (2D) 7 5 1 937 27 932 7 NOT AVAILABLE IN CANADA
Featured Artists Chad Crouch – lead vocals, guitar Dave Depper – bass, vocals Greg Lind – drums Michael Johnson – Rhodes, vocals
Overview For their fourth proper album, Portland quartet Blanket Music gathered in the former South Portland Library to self-record a collection of love songs rooted wholly in earnestness. They came away with not only their fourth, but their fifth album as well – collected here in a two-disc set entitled The Love/Love Translation. The Love weaves through a pastiche of pop idioms while showcasing the intrinsically unique artistry of the four members, embracing their strengths and limitations confidently. They continue to build on their reputation for pop eclecticism, each song representing an artistic metamorphosis in the tradition of The Beatles and David Bowie. Love Translation collects love songs written by friends, largely presented as “interpretations.” Well-known ballads from The Decemberists and M Ward have equal footing among the up-and-comers and underexposed alike, all of who bear some relation to Crouch’s HUSH label. With this disc, Blanket Music have not only memorialized their music community, but created a compelling album in the lost tradition of covering contemporaries unabashedly, offering up alternate versions with gusto.
Press Quotes “Often compared to Belle & Sebastian, Blanket Music differs by channeling the influences of Motown, country and even swing. It blends these genres well, creating an eclectic brand of pop. Crouch’s vocals resemble a more lucid Conor Oberst, but he’s got a unique, almost foreign, way of phrasing his lyrics.” – Magnet “Crouch understands the difference between getting in people’s faces and inviting them to come to him. This style of indie pop often takes the latter route, making it easy to overlook but that much more seductive…a perfect balance, and this is his most compelling album.” – Pitchforkmedia

Overview The Framed
Countless Ways of Self“Garred seems to channel Leonard Cohen, singing with deadpan mystery and grave tone.” Destruction – The Oregonian File Under: Punk
The Super Framed XX Man Countless Ways of SelfX Destruction File Under: Alt Rock
CD: RCL 17 (O) It takes a unique skill set to work as a music therapist at the Oregon State Hospital maximumsecurity wing. By day, Scott Garred works with the castoffs of society in drum circles, sing-alongs and rock bands. By night he is Super XX Man, bolstered by the spirit of camaraderie in a gentle band consisting of wife Michelle “Polka Queen of NE Portland” Garred sprinkling salt and pepper on accordion, Zach “Fingers” Boyle casting a waterfall of sound on guitar, and Ali “Little Sister” Wesly lending backup vocals, flute and brushed drum. Built on simple melodies, these songs have classic appeal recalling Buddy Holly or early Willie Nelson. Couched in major chord harmonies, the lyrics have an optimistic halo, beckoning the listener to sing along. In so doing, one will sing narratives of life and love that, while not shying away from spirituality, illuminate the dilemmas of being human. In the world of Super XX Man, we are encouraged to find someone to call “darlin,” we’re inspired to “stroll on through,” and we’re reminded that amazing grace is a sweet sound.

Overview “A bewitching fusion of slowcore, dream pop and post rock.” – All Music Guide Swelling in haze of Hammond organs, Rhodes piano, trembling bells and hypnotic guitars, Seekonk sets the mood for another album that takes you on a journey. Full of slow-blooming melodies, heavy pop concoctions and majestic twists & turns, Pinkwood is a collection of expansive pop songs. Seekonk is the sort of band that avoids easy categorization while they remain immanently listenable and engaging throughout all their phases, and Pinkwood traces their trajectory with the warmth of good oldfashioned analog recording. Continuing down an atmospheric and strangely nostalgic path, Seekonk returns with eight gracefully powerful songs about fuckin’ up, fuckin’ off and killin’.This is Pinkwood.

F/i A Question for the Somnambulist File Under: Avant Rock CD: SAA 40 (O) 7 8 985 6 3 0 402 8 NOT AVAILABLE IN CANADA
Along with Die Kreuzen, Boy Dirt Car and sister band Vocokesh, Milwaukee psychedelic rockand-sound legends F/i spawned a space-rock scene in the ‘80s unlike any other around. By harnessing the ghosts of Hawkwind and Blue Cheer, extracting the German avant rock scene from the early 1970s as defined by Guru Guru, Ash Ra Tempel and Agitation Free, and sifting it through industrial sounds akin to Throbbing Gristle and Nurse With Wound, over time it has become evident that F/i have quietly influenced a whole new generation of exploratory instrumental freakers. Originally issued in a miniscule run in 2003, A Question for the Somnambulist traverses dark and hazy landscapes, hypnotic textures laced with electronics and exploratory guitar riffs dripping with effects. Resuscitated from the annals of uber-obscurity for another suckerpunch to your third eye, this reissue includes one bonus track from the sessions and comes in a limited edition of 1,000 housed in a deluxe letterpressed and recycled paperboard package.

My Cat is an Alien Cosmic Light of the Third Millennium File Under: Avant Rock CD: IPT 77 (P) 7 9 3447 5 0772 9 NOT AVAILABLE IN CANADA
Featured Artists Maurizio Opalio – electric alien guitar, mini-xylophone, cosmic percussions Roberto Opalio – alien vocals, electric astral guitar, space toy, piano toy, cosmic percussions
Overview Like some kind of droned-out Sun Ra, My Cat is an Alien landed only long enough to drop off the masters and artwork at Important Records before vanishing into the cosmos (or Torino) once again. This new full-length album, recorded April 2005 at MCIAA’s Alien Zone, consists of three tracks with a total length of 49:20 minutes. Cosmic Light of the Third Millennium is the sum of My Cat is an Alien’s myth-poetic imaginary. Here, the Opalio space-brothers push their improvised music of the spheres into new cosmic territories, where the use of wordless vocals impresses a still-unheard lyricism inside the sublime complexity of their unique musical textures. My Cat is an Alien is the improv duo formed by brothers Maurizio and Roberto Opalio. They both primarily play electric & acoustic guitars, various toy instruments and percussion. Since forming in late 1997, they have released several CD-Rs and vinyl on their own Opax Records. MCIAA’s debut recording immediately thrilled Sonic Youth, and two months later the brothers made their live debut supporting Sonic Youth’s 1998 Italian tour. During the past six years, MCIAA have been invited to perform live on Sonic Youth European tours as well as at Kim Gordon and Jim O’Rourke’s solo shows. In July 2004, MCIAA started on a series of special ART-split LPs called From the Earth to the Spheres featuring the Italian duo alongside outsider artists such as Thurston Moore, Jim O’Rourke, Jackie-O Motherfucker, Christina Carter (Charalambides), Thuja and Glands of External Secretion with Nels Cline. Because of the great success of the project, Very Friendly is issuing the whole series in CD format!
Press Quotes “Roberto and his brother Maurizio are the highly advanced lifeforms crewing the mysterious starship that goes by the name of My Cat is an Alien (MCIAA), plotting a quixotic course through three millennia of cosmic music, from the celestial drones of the Pythagorean monochord onwards, to land up in the gravity-free realm of the No-mind.” – The Wire “Italy’s My Cat is an Alien is the finest two-brother band from Italy since the end of the Great War. Their sounds move through the air the way that a tub of fine Roman butter moves through a circus ape.” – Byron Coley & Thurston Moore, Arthur “This is proper minimalism, the art of LaMonte Young; only while Young longed desperately for a trance-state, MCIAA start in one and work from there…it is so staggering, so mesmerizing, and makes music on its own terms so definitely, that it has a certain menacing, willfully unpretty and monolithic grandeur, like some intractable slab of rock or a vast, empty desert.” – Stylus

Overview “While his countless post-punk contemporaries wallow in self-misery and miserable poetry, Michael Gira – the former leader of avant-noise-droners Swans – creates a ruptured synthesis of blues, folk, and rock with his new acoustic-based group.” – San Francisco Weekly This is the third Angels of Light album to be released in limited edition on Important. Like the first two, it is limited to 500 copies on deluxe double virgin vinyl.According to Michael Gira, this album “started, innocently enough, with the intent of being a simple collection of well-written songs performed by the musicians who played them live for the last few years, with the addition of a few acoustic songs, lightly colored. Instead, as things often seem to go around here, I ended up saturating every available molecule of the recording tape with sound, then hacked, cut, poured sonic fertilizer/salt on the resultant wounds, and it finally metastasized into this raging/weeping beast, which in the end succeeded in slowly biting off my head, leaving this album behind as evidence.”

Maja Ratkje Stalker File Under: Experimental LP: IPT 92 (R) 7 9 3447 5 0922 8 NOT AVAILABLE IN CANADA
Renowned international composer Maja Ratkje is a founding member of two of Norway’s most respected improvisational units – Spunk and Fe-Mail.While her solo work on the Rune Grammofon release Voice lacks the electronic and instrumental elements of these projects, Stalker finds Ratkje merging elements of her other projects into her solo endeavors. Ranging from furious to tender, Stalker was recorded in Paris and at various live dates around Europe. This live material was then brought back to a studio in Norway and laboriously edited for release. Like much of Ratkje’s work, Stalker flawlessly contrasts these two distinct emotional and audio extremes. While Stalker is influenced the most by Japanese noise, it is also a quiet emotional drift based around Bertold Brecht’s story of a drowned girl who floats down a river while her body slowly dissolves. With this dichotomy hanging in limbo, Ratkje fills in the blanks with her signature compositional attention to detail and balance. This vinyl-only picture disc is limited to 500 copies worldwide.

Overview “A life-changing moment fixes the beginning of Brosseau’s brilliant album…a love letter to what was lost [and] a series of snapshots from a childhood that ended when the dikes gave way.The understated melody [and] plaintive voice…sound as if they come from some faraway time.” – Chicago Tribune Since the 2005 release of What I Mean To Say Is Goodbye, Tom Brosseau has garnered much acclaim from media and celebrity alike, including Chord and Harp as well as John Doe and Bonnie Raitt. On the heels of this success comes a re-release of Brosseau’s 2001 CD The Blue Record, which has been unavailable for several years. All the songs have been re-mastered, and Brosseau has added five bonus tracks, three of which are previously unreleased. “Used to Own a Rowing Boat” is an outtake from the Goodbye recording sessions with Sam Jones, while “The Young and the Free” is a 2003 on-air recording from KCRW’s Morning Becomes Eclectic with Nic Harcourt.

The Buttless Chaps Where Night Holds Light File Under: Alt Rock CD: MRI 91 (M)
Put on your cloak, light your candles and prepare to writhe to the backwoods sounds of The Buttless Chaps’ newest excursion into the realms of the unknowable. Formed in Victoria eight years ago, until very recently the Chaps were Dave Gowans, Lasse Lutick, Morgan McDonald and Torben Wilson, but were recently enhanced by the addition of Ida Nilsen (Great Aunt Ida). Where Night Holds Light picks up hot on the heels of The Chaps’ most recent Mint release, Love This Time, and takes the obsession with animals, insects, gardening and human suffering to its (musically) logical conclusion. Imagine if Depeche Mode had recorded The Byrd’s Sweetheart of the Rodeo, or if The Handsome Family had done a version of Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band. Where Night Holds Light sounds like nothing you have come across before, even if you are already familiar with The Buttless Chaps!

Overview “The band strikes upon a notably individualistic chord, honing their crunchy hard rock into a taught, unified wall-of-Les Paul…the fact is that with all the stoner rock nodding-off going on these days, Throttlerod’s focused assault and admirable songwriting economy are clearly their greatest weapons.” – All Music Guide The history of music has shown time and again that losing a member can mean a band’s instant death. Thankfully, Richmond’s Throttlerod had a skilled guide when making the transition from quartet to trio. Andrew Schneider, producer of Cave In and The Blue Man Group, has been with the band every step of the way, chronicling every new incarnation with a corresponding release. Nail not only follows the natural progression Schneider has cultivated, but takes the boys into musically uncharted territory – the album is aggressively abrasive, with more emphasis on the punk & metal that inspired them to start a band in the first place. Producer aside, the one characteristic each of their releases share is the fact that the band couldn’t have made a better album if they tried…that is, until the next one.

With thousands of miles under their belts, Dixie Witch has honed their talent to a razor-sharp point, culminating in the epic Smoke & Mirrors. Produced, engineered and mixed by considerable talent Joel Hamilton (who has worked on recordings by everyone from Unsane & Mike Patton to Elvis Costello & Gil Scott Heron), Smoke & Mirrors packs the punch of six long years on the road into just under an hour of the loudest, dirtiest rock ‘n’ roll the boys could muster. Southern charm comes oozing through the thick riffs and powerful percussion of what can only be called classic American songwriting. With this masterpiece under their belts, the tour that never ends will rise up again this spring, bringing the explosive fury that is Dixie Witch back where the boys feel most comfortable...on the road again.
Selling Points • Full U.S. tour booked for Spring 2006 • Dixie Witch has a very loyal fan base built during previous tours with Clutch, Alabama Thunderpussy, Acid King, Fu Manchu, Halfway to Gone and more • Dixie Witch songs have been featured on Viva La Bam and several other MTV shows, as well as on a multitude of video games including NHL 2K6 Hockey • Major media mailing in conjunction with release date

Produced in New Orleans soon after the horrific wake of Hurricane Katrina, this 13-track release abandons the concept that an electronic album needs to be strapped to a specific genre. From the dub-influenced “NINEZERODAWG” to the Kraut rock-inspired “Tonight the Stars Revolt,” TPP brings us songs that reference a familiar universe while laying their own unique and mysterious foundation of synth-injured hooks, solidly fumbled beats and atmospheric hypnosis. No longer in search of the ‘70s Ramones style that marked their previous works, Rivalry sounds like plain and simple rock. Overview “Red & Gold is a DIY band, with a DIY mentality. The indie was practically dripping off of them as they set up to play. It was clear this band wasn’t there to sell records; they were there to rock their instruments and to rock them hard. With a driving drumbeat, their set took off and soared into disarray. Dual vocals screamed back and forth across the stage amidst crashing cymbals, deep-cutting bass lines, and insane guitars that picked you up and threw you back down in one intensely melodic hook.” – Philadelphia Weekly Resembling a hit and run more than an album, this EP will hurt you and leave you. Five quick, abusive songs feature multiple desperate vocals and crass guitars with secret melodies buried somewhere in the wreckage. Sing along and sing aloud, because it won’t last long, and soon you’ll be craving more from Red and Gold.

Featured Artists Rose Melberg – vocals, guitars, piano, flute, ukulele, drums Nick Krgovich – vocals, piano Saundrah Humphrey – violin
Overview Straight out of a Sacramento high school, Rose Melberg entered the indie-pop 7” scene in 1992 with the first of her many successful bands, Tiger Trap, and the all-girl foursome quickly became the stars of a burgeoning indie-pop/punk movement centered in Olympia,WA and labels like K Records and Kill Rock Stars. Too good to last, Tiger Trap split after their second U.S. tour, leaving one classic album and an EP on K Records. Melberg quickly teamed with Jen Sbragia to form The Softies, possibly her best-known project. With just guitars and angelic voices, The Softies debuted with a 7” and mini-LP on Slumberland Records, toured the U.S. five times (once with Elliott Smith) and released three amazing albums and singles, also on K Records, from 1994-2001. At the same time, Melberg managed to front Go Sailor, who collected their sought-after pop singles on Lookout Records and had two songs featured in the campy film But I’m a Cheerleader. Melberg also recorded various duets and solo tracks while on tour, compiled on Portola and released by Double Agent Records in 1998. After giving us an avalanche of mellifluous albums to treasure, Melberg kept quiet for five years while she started a family in a small Canadian town. Now, she is back with her solo masterpiece, and her maturity is immediate – long after graduating from Indiepop University, she emerges as a developed singer/songwriter akin to Nick Drake, Tracey Thorn, Elliott Smith and Isobel Campbell (Belle & Sebastian).
Press Quotes “File Under: simply beautiful indie-pop. Rose Melberg is best known as half of The Softies, an understated, sparkling acoustic two-guitar and two-voice group whose albums bring to mind rose petals, rosy blushes, rock roses and summer afternoons on a crushed-out best friend’s roof, watching the roseate sun as it sets without you. If you’re already in love with Melberg’s voice, or with her simply moving lyrics, all you need to know is that this exists.” – CMJ “With the gauzy innocence and childlike simplicity of Moe Tucker’s moment in the Velvets’ spotlight…Melberg’s voice has the proud yet vulnerable quality of a spurned teenager in love.” – Boston Phoenix

Overview The Framed
Countless of Self- guitarist/violinist. However, rather than embracing It’s tempting to describe Et Ret asWays an experimental Destruction cacophony and cold aesthetics, Et Ret’s compositions achieve warmth and resonance through File Under: Punk rhythmic and melodic repetition. He complements his confident but restrained guitar melodies with CD: RCL 17 (O) deeply impassioned swirls of violins and cellos, calling to mind the work of Dirty Three violinist Warren Ellis. As a final touch, the compositions are accented with sparse percussion and subtle analog electronics. The final track is possibly the finest example of Et Ret’s talents. Using layers of violins and cellos, Et Ret creates a swooning, seductive tension. The final track captures the overall tone of the album – it feels like morning, like things are changing, and that’s scary and good.
