Featured Artists Roy Nathanson – alto sax, soprano sax, vocals Sam Bardfeld – violin, vocals Curtis Fowlkes – trombone, vocals Tim Kiah – bass, vocals Napoleon Maddox – human beatbox, vocals
Overview Sotto Voce is the brand new concept/album from the extraordinarily gifted and wide-open mind of alto sax player, composer and songwriter Roy Nathanson. The group features fellow Jazz Passengers Curtis Fowlkes and Sam Bardfeld, along with wunderkind bassist Tim Kiah and human beatbox/singer Napolean Maddox of Cincinnati hip-hop/jazz outfit Iswhat?! The album features six infectious new song-stories by Nathanson, as well as an interpolation of Bobby Hebb’s mid-‘60s R&B/pop smash “Sunny” and a gorgeous reading of great jazz composer Rahsaan Roland Kirk’s “The Inflated Tear” with new lyrics by Roy Nathanson. Roy Nathanson has spent the last 25 years composing and performing free & post–bop jazz with an assortment of odd punk, world and new music projects coming out of the downtown NYC scene. He and Curtis Fowlkes formed the Jazz Passengers in the late ‘80s with members of John Lurie’s Lounge Lizards. He has also composed soundtracks for a variety of movies including Raising Victor Vargas (with vibist Bill Ware), and written radio plays commissioned by NPR. Over the last two years, Nathanson has been utilizing the hip new Brooklyn club Barbès to workshop his new combination of stories, songs, poems and music, which has finally come to fruition on Sotto Voce. Enjoy!
Press Quotes “An extraordinary composer leads this perky, irreverent group that somehow manages to orbit both the Marx Brothers and Sun Ra.” – New York Magazine “Nathanson remains one of the only songwriters who can simultaneously shed a tear while raising an eyebrow. His typically inspired characters and musical combinations make Fire at Keaton’s Bar and Grill an island of the mind; a place where you wish everybody knew your name.” – Atlantic Monthly “Nathanson has a gift for counterpoint, meshing irregular riffs to mix spaciousness and propulsion. And he doesn’t let one idiom contain him.” – New York Times
Selling Points • Roy Nathanson’s brand-new concept of high-caliber jazz meshed with poetic texts in a pop-song format works unerringly! • Nathanson’s first new release since 2000’s widely acclaimed The Fire at Keaton’s Bar and Grill, which featured both Elvis Costello and Debbie Harry • Includes fellow Jazz Passengers Curtis Fowlkes & Sam Bardfeld along with singing bassist Tim Kiah and human beatbox/singer Napoleon Maddox of Cincinnati hip-hop/jazz crew Iswhat?! • Full service/promotion to national press and e-media by AUM Fidelity • Full service/promotion to NPR, college and non-commercial radio by AUM Fidelity • Ads will run in Signal to Noise, Arthur, Point of Departure and more

Featured Artists Rob Mazurek – cornet, electronics Mauricio Tanaka – percussion, electronics
Overview Spawned from the pink sulfur skies of São Paulo, this project is the combined work of artists Rob Mazurek (Mandarin Movie, Isotope 217, Chicago Underground) and Mauricio Takara (Hurtmold, M.Takara), whose music embraces modern electronics, dub, free samba, rock, jazz and maracatu. The album’s opening track recalls the hazy electronic soundscapes of Fennesz’s “Endless Summer,” while its ending presents the unclassifiable sound construction of Tiago Mesquita’s words and futuristic phantom carnival melodies. Sandwiched between are five diverse, texturally rich tracks covering a variety of sonic palettes. Recorded from August to November 2005 at Rocha Studios in São Paulo, the group’s debut release features contributions from that city’s vibrant music community: Hurtmold, Marcos Axe, Tiago Mesquita, Wayne Montana & Damon Locks (both of The Eternals), Josh Abrams (Town & Country) and Chad Taylor (Chicago Underground).

Liberty Ellman Ophiuchus Butterfly File Under: Avant Jazz CD: PIE 19 (Q) NOT AVAILABLE IN CANADA
Featured Artists Liberty Ellman – guitar, synthesizer, sampler Steve Lehman – alto sax Mark Shim – tenor sax Jose Davilla – tuba Stephan Crump – bass Gerald Cleaver – drums
Overview Liberty Ellman’s Ophiuchus Butterfly is the culmination of three years of development and study as both a composer & listener, and the unique sound & fresh approach are the by-products of Ellman’s influences and tastes. All of this is to say that Ophiuchus Butterfly is an album unlike any other that will come out this year – a concept in writing, execution and production that melds modern compositions and improvisational performance with the form and production of some of today’s more popular instrumental music.Taken as a whole, Ophiuchus Butterfly is a monumental step forward for a generation striving to bring its influences to bear on an art form defined by the recordings of past generations. The album opens with the title track, which features one of Ellman’s few solo statements.Tasteful and understated, Ellman’s playing is centered in his original rhythmic phrasing, often surprising intervallic choices and melodic jumps. The CD then moves to “Aestivation,” a haunting and beautiful piece, and makes a great leap forward to the minimalist, electro/acoustic and aurally captivating “Snow Lips,” a major shift in the landscape that fits so seamlessly it actually winds up defining the CD’s overall direction. Ophiuchus Butterfly is a beautiful statement from an artist trying to bridge the gap between creative, challenging and accessible jazz. It is a statement of what today’s music sounds like when all of its freshness and new possibilities breathe life into an art form all-too-often constrained by memories of times gone by.
Press Quotes “A terrific guitarist, Ellman plays with a rhythmic charge and a decisive touch.” – Gary Giddins, Village Voice “Ellman’s ballads are special, exotic things.” – New York Times “With his new CD…Liberty Ellman emerges as one of the most intriguing…guitarists on the New York scene today.” – Bill Milkowski, JazzTimes
Selling Points • Ellman is a key figure in the current New York scene that also includes Vijay Iyer, Steve Lehman and Rudresh Mahanthappa • Ellman’s first sextet recording, and his first release since Tactiles, is a fresh example of modern composition utilizing sampling & synthesizer techniques mixed seamlessly with guitars, tubas, and cutting-edge improvisation • Ellman’s work with Henry Threadgill, Butch Morris and Greg Osby over the past three years has helped to raise his profile • Pi Recordings will do a full press mailing to top music publications and a full radio mailing to CMJ, JazzWeek and NPR stations • Ads will run in Down Beat and JazzTimes as well as music websites

Featured Artists Rob Smith – guitar, effects Ari Clegg – bass Ryan Pritts – percussion
Overview Evolving from their embryonic shoegaze-inspired melee into sprawling, heavy stoner/psych/drone hybrids as evidenced on 2003’s epic Satin Black, Paik have achieved an uncanny ability to completely shred the atmosphere while coaxing out blissfully sonorous melodies from their thunderous caterwaul. Pulling back the reins just a bit, Paik funnel their supersonic cyclones into a tightly focused box of thunder with Monster of the Absolute, their greatest balancing act of melody and dissonance to date. Utilizing the tried-and-true power trio format, Paik are certainly not at a loss for conjuring up blistering volume and powerful rhythms. It is their particular incantations, evoking warm melodic portraits amongst a firestorm, which truly set them apart. Few bands are as adept at evoking the inherent symmetry in otherwise clashing emotions as Paik, and it is this wedding of simultaneous sonic disparity that is so breathtaking. Previous outings stretched out their explorations into lengthy, repetitious exercises but with Monster of the Absolute, Paik have honed things down to a much more concise, refined format. The result is some of the finest and most accessible cinematic pummel of their career.
Press Quotes “Paik make the kind of slow, drop-D guitar sludge that alienated suburban kids have been getting stoned to since Black Sabbath entered the fray…a few hours wallowing alone with records like this one can be cathartic in its own way, like pushing the ‘pause’ button on your life, and it’s sure a lot better for you than heroin.” – Pitchforkmedia “Instrumental power trio Paik certainly don’t hold anything back…a massively low spate of dense drone-scapes saturated with feedback, low-pitched beats and squalid guitars. If Hawkwind’s imprenetrable space-chug mixed with Big Black’s grating corruption resembles your idea of a good time, dig in.” – Skyscraper “…Retains an air of mystery and triumph usually reserved for soulless arena-rock bombast…a masterpiece of noise-based songwriting, garrulous drumming and pinprick bass notes, often redolent of Mogwai’s crowning achievement, Young Team.” – Splendid
Selling Points • Hand-picked to perform at Terrastock 5 and this year’s Terrastock 6 alongside Ghost, Bardo Pond, Kinski, Marissa Nadler and many more • 2005 tour opening for Stephen Malkmus & The Jicks exposed Paik to a very wide audience; previous tours with Acid Mothers Temple, Kinski, SubArachnoid Space • RIYL: Spacemen 3, My Bloody Valentine, Bardo Pond, Mogwai, Kinski, Earth • Full media campaign by Forcefield PR (Sufjan Stevens, Fonotone Box etc); Radio Sunday Service courtesy of AAM • Ads will run in The Wire, Signal to Noise, Arthur, Magnet, Pitchforkmedia and more

Featured Artists Gregg Gillis – sampler, computer
Overview Girl Talk (a.k.a. Gregg Gillis) is back with his third album on Illegal Art! With each release getting closer to his notorious semi-naked live show, Night Ripper is focused less on beat-fuckery and more on bringing heat to the party. Current hip-hop hits, soft-rock radio standards, party classics, grunge masterpieces, R&B singles, glossy club-shakers and rock anthems are all layered and pieced together into one nonstop celebration of pop and excess declared “a plunderphonics party record” by Mark Hosler of Negativland. Girl Talk tours regularly and actively collaborates with other “on the verge” Midwest and East Coast artists such as Grand Buffet (Fighting), Drop the Lime (Tigerbeat6), Chris Glover (Interscope) and Hearts of Darknesses (Schematic/Asphodel).
Press Quotes “A fusion of Tigerbeat6’s pop destruction and 2ManyDJs’ mainstream mash-ups.” – URB “Girl Talk…accelerates beats, distorts textures, pitches up flow, and sets up strange juxtapositions to render absurd the sexed-up aura of hip-hop and dance pop.” – Cleveland Scene “In a time when kids can barely sit through an entire album by just one artist, this A.D.D. mix will keep them sedated and/or spastic.” – XLR8R
Selling Points • Previous album charted on CMJ (RPM) at #15 (with limited promotion) • Developed a growing fan base over the past five years through an infamously wild live show • Girl Talk will tour in support of Night Ripper and has previously shared the stage with Prefuse 73, Wesley Willis, Soft Pink Truth, Wolf Eyes, Luke Vibert, Cex and Otto Von Schirach • Praise from URB, XLR8R,Tiny Mix Tapes, Dusted and Winter Music Conference • 7” on 333 Recordings (Deerhoof, Drop the Lime) released in February 2006 • Press, radio, new media and retail promotion via Fanatic Promotion • Ads will run in Filter

Featured Artists Sean Brooks – vocals, guitars Josh Kempa – bass Chris Calvert – drums
Overview Portland trio Minmae returns with their eighth full-length! Monstre features 11 songs of esoteric riddles buried in song; therapy for the weary traveler grasping for comprehension in an incomprehensible world. Beautiful melodies layered under stark entropic lyricism make Monstre an album that leaves the listener thinking as much drinking. Minmae has been evolving artistically since its inception. The band rose out of the ashes of Sean Brooks’ previous group Thee Psychic Hearts in 1998, with an initial 4-track recording that fell somewhere between the sampling and lo-fi singer/songwriter genres. Once Josh Kempa and Chris Calvert were established as full-time members, the sound began to grow fuller and the recordings more frequent. Each release holds its own place on the sonic spectrum, from deconstructive noise to melodic folk-pop. Last year’s I’d Be Scared,Were You Still Burning was Minmae’s first release on Portland’s Greyday label, and received much national acclaim.
Press Quotes “The move a few years back from San Diego to Portland was a good one for Minmae frontman Sean Brooks, whose dense, old-school style of indie rock is often offset by moody pacings, atmospherics and lyrical themes (imagine Smog writing less ironic songs for Pavement).” – CMJ NMM “With a decade-plus of depth, very little in the indie rock world straddles melody and six-string mayhem with the type of finesse exhibited on 2005’s I’d Be Scared,Were You Still Burning. To put it simply, Minmae makes gold soundz for now people.” – All Music Guide

Featured Artists M. Ritchey – vocals, electronic composition Jona Bechtolt – electronic composition
Overview Classic Battles are fought and won on this debut album from Mantar, as disparate influences band together in defense of pop’s Holy Trinity: warm synths, hot beats and captivating, ever-changing melodies. M. Ritchey manages to present these raw elements with a sensibility as equally refined by years of academic study (she is a graduate student in Musicology at UCLA) as by service in mainstay indie pop/rock/ electronic acts (Wolf Colonel, Dear Nora, The Badger King). Classic Battles is interesting, beautiful and strange, refusing to fall neatly into any genre. This album sees scattered RIL drums meld with fervently catchy choruses, ‘70s synth-prog flavor and surprising harmonic structures.Throughout, Ritchey’s voice ties every piece together, handling the unorthodox melodic jumps with ease and panache. While most of the production is solely Ritchey’s, ex-bandmate Jona Bechtolt (Y.A.C.H.T.) makes several key appearances, giving three of the songs a collaborative feel reminiscent of their work together in The Badger King. The title, Classic Battles, accurately captures what Ritchey wants to get across with the songs: the constant push and pull of the planets, the war of land and sea, the forces tying people together and dragging them apart, and the kill-or-be-killed philosophy espoused by Mother Nature. The album comes with a fold-out poster depicting many of these battles in lovely, minimal pencil drawings by Rebecca CarlisleHealy: Lion vs. Octopus, Ritchey vs. Zombie,Three-Headed Cobra vs. Rabbits and Shark vs. Pizza. Classic Battles is primal as well as coldly modern, expressing the conflicting forces that motivate all life on earth.
Press Quotes “A digital landscape, sonically enriched with harmonious tales and gorgeous vocals – Mantar is a many-ringed event to behold.” – Slightly Confusing to a Stranger “Mantar is long; long and dark; long dark and weird; long dark weird and nautical.” – Modified.org “Very, very, very original and unpredictable vocal melodies and musical arrangements are the cornerstone of this Oregon band’s assured future world domination.” – The Morning News

Featured Artists Zachary Petersen – guitar Jonathan Daily – guitar Benjamin Masbaum – bass, vocals Karl Hofstetter – drums Jason Barnett – percussion, samples, vocals
Overview LAFCADIO grew out of metal’s deep-rooted traditions, but they’re always somewhere on the outer edge of ritual and convention. The Indianapolis-based group (formerly known as Gogglesphere) adds new options to the prog/math sound, their wide array of influences (from King Crimson and Don Caballero to Melvins and Deftones) fusing into a new synthesis – like some kind of psycho-symphonic experimental cock rock. With their debut, Sham Duvet, the group tells the story of the troublesome dichotomy between religious epiphany and schizophrenic dementia. The epic protagonist, “Sham Duvet,” is a neurotic/prophetic figure with a messiah complex. Is Sham really a psychopath? Are his messianic ambitions ultimately hallucinations? Of course they are! This isn’t the ethereal lute-song of Handel’s Messiah. This is fucking metal. LAFCADIO delivers their songs with a brutal elegance, but they don’t shy away from the manic absurdity of the clownish aspect of doom. Sham Duvet is speckled with the humorous and the absurd, giving this prog-math-metal group a sense of authenticity – a trait highly lacking within the all-too-cookie-cutter world of heavy music.
Press Quotes “With progressive metal’s epic-ness and math rock’s weird timing, LAFCADIO will challenge even metal’s most faithful…it’s loud, crude, and challenging – the exact recipe that metal needs these days.” – Smother “For fans of Fantomas, Melvins or even Faith no More, Sham Duvet is a must-have.” – IndyMetal.com “Stunning...brutally intense.” – Nuvo “Hardcore mayhem that is sure to please any metal fan.” – Delusions of Adequacy

Overview With Metric, produced and engineered by Phil Ek (Built to Spill, Modest Mouse, The Shins), Spanish for 100 has produced a followup that digs even deeper into the sonic guitar revelry and truthful songwriting territory first explored in their debut album. Based in Seattle, Spanish for 100 is currently comprised of Aaron Starkey, Chris Crumpler, Ross McGilvray and Corey Passons, working in the two-guitar/bass/drum format. The heart of the group is collaboration based off the whispers of heart-born acoustic songs.
Press Quotes “One of the best up-and-coming bands in Seattle. When I put Spanish for 100 on the air, people stop what they’re doing and contact me immediately, asking ‘who is this band?’” – John Richards, KEXP “Spanish for 100 draw from obvious nineties indie touchstones like Pavement and Built to Spill, but with a key distinction: these dudes aren’t afraid to play the hero.Where Doug Martsch would record rip-roaring solos with shitty amps to recast his ace axemanship in a self-deprecating light, Spanish for 100 slice through Phil Ek’s studio sheen with gleaming sabers.” – Splendid “Spanish for 100 could easily be the next best light indie pop-rock gem to emerge from the Seattle underground.” – Smother “Chock-full of gorgeous moments of dusty rock with a country feedback all kept hip and indie and melodic…there is true radiance in the harmonized vocals…like a Centro-Matic song covered by The Shins…a great find, a sensational band, and you’re going to want in on this before they blow up, leaving you with nothing but back row seats at The Wiltern.” – CultureBunker.com

Monkey vs. Shark is the latest release from one of San Francisco’s brightest indie bands, Thee More Shallows. 2005 was a breakout year for Dee Kesler & Co. as their full-length More Deep Cuts was universally praised for being dark, sinister, epic and fresh, hailed by many as one of the best records of the year. Monkey vs. Shark picks up where More Deep Cuts left off, almost like an appendix. Overview “This is wonderful stuff – brave and experimental, yet warmly human. Make room on your folk revival shelf for something that may be influenced by folk, but is in no way a revival.” – Splendid The Smother Party, The Eyesores’ fifth release, is a collection of tales about real and imagined horrors. The music is decidedly more cabaret than the previous CD, 2005’s The Quiet Room. However, The Smother Party does feature two lengthy instrumentals including the monumental “Gutterhelmet Ascending,” a highly dynamic, organic long-form duo piece for drums and distorted accordion by Alec K. Redfearn and Matt McLaren. Slow, simmering noir-ish dirges, spastic no-wave tangos, repetitive rhythmic conundrums,Weimar-style cabaret songs, drunken revelry, crippling depression, extreme self loathing, Catholic guilt, clanking, scraping and radio noise are some of the many facets that make up The Eyesores’ sound.
Selling Points • Alec K. Redfearn has been active for more than 16 years in the Providence, RI underground arts scene as a musician, composer and performance artist • Redfearn will tour extensively in support of this CD • Full publicity and radio campaign • Tour support with full mailing to media outlets along tour route • Ads will run in CMJ NMM #138, with accompanying banner ad on CMJ website

Violins Pink Water File Under: Alt Rock CD: CTP 48 (O)
Violins’ debut album Pink Water is like a conversation you always meant to have, but never quite found the voice to articulate. The 12 song-stories speak many tongues, revealing musical and lyrical twists, bridging storefront philosophy with personal truth, and cradling thoughts in melodies so captivating they nearly mask the narratives unfolding underneath. Pink Water is dark, ambitious, convoluted pop whose craft is implicit in its finely woven tales and meticulous production. Violins is the latest project from songwriter Michael Lyons, former frontman of Clyde Federal, a band that found a respectable place in the Chicago sphere and beyond sharing stages with Andrew Bird, Weird War, Rilo Kiley, Saul Williams and Mecca Normal. Following a string of acclaimed EPs (including 2004’s Sensitive Skin) and tours of both coasts, Lyons’ new endeavor stands as a culminating artistic event, free to move beyond the constraints of a band framework while still calling upon bandmates old and new to expertly flesh out his visions as needed.

Overview According to ancient mythology, Ah Puch was the god of death and the ruler of Mitnal, the lowest and most terrible of the nine hells. Portrayed as a man with an owl’s head, or as a bloated corpse, Ah Puch survives in modern Mayan belief as Yum Cimil (Lord of Death). If there were music to encompass the intensity of Au Puch’s reign, it would be the sound of Shipwreck – pain, fury and fear. Featured Artists John Dwyer – guitar, vocals Matthew Hartman – drums Val Tronic – keyboards Overview In some parts of the world, it’s been said that attending a performance of the late, great Coachwhips was not unlike that of a religious experience; the blind began to see, the deaf began to hear, and water turned to wine. It’s as if time stood still for 30+ minutes, and there wasn’t anyone else in the entire galaxy but John Dwyer, his band and a few hundred electrified, sweaty kids having the longest orgasm on record. It’s impossible to dispute this, trust us. Coachwhips combine the bite of six thrash bands playing simultaneously with an uppercut of ‘60s garage-rock melody – a sound so furious and yet oh-so-incredibly-pop-laced, the second it punctures your eardrum you’ll want to French kiss the Earth’s entire population. If you never had the chance to attend one of their shows, this is the set for you.The DVD features previously unseen footage chronicling the band’s short but magnificent career, from their house party days to their sticky final show, while the CD showcases 47 minutes of the rare and B-side tunes which were virtually impossible to find prior to this release. Now shut up and kiss me! Press Quotes “I suspect that the Coachwhips wanted to make garage rock and accidentally turned into a thrash band, and the result is way better than if they had tried to do that on purpose.” – Chuck Klosterman, Esquire “Spectoresque wall of noise not unlike The Jesus and Mary Chain in their prime.” – Mojo “Like a honky-tonk hayride gone gloriously amok.” – Entertainment Weekly “Coachwhips know real garage rockers don’t wear Beatle boots.” – Spin Selling Points • Very last release from this critically acclaimed buzz band! • Definitely a band to experience live; for fans who were unable to catch the band in person, this is DVD/CD set is perfect • Satellite, college and commercial radio airplay • Numerous publicists will handle this release • Ads will run in Harp, Spin, Arthur and many more Key Markets Hometown: San Francisco. Overview Let’s get this straight immediately: Anoice is not another instrumental group with strong rock tendencies and an armchair association with classical music. Unlike numerous contemporaries they will undoubtedly be compared to, their goal is not to make soft/loud/soft/loud juxtapositions in every track, but to carefully craft each song with a strong attention to melody, solid accompaniment and courteous counterpoint. One of Anoice’s remarkable qualities is that they truly work as a group, with members who aren’t afraid to remain quiet while others play.Through meticulous composition, Anoice has achieved an unrivaled quality. Anoice are a six-piece group based in Tokyo. While each member cites different musical influences, they are fairly evenly split between rock (My Bloody Valentine meets King Crimson), classical & modern composers (Debussy and Shostakovitch writing together after drinking heavily with Phillip Glass), jazz, and electronic (Autechre meets Múm). Combining all of these influences with their obvious Japanese heritage, Anoice has created an album with an emotional arc, climaxing magnificently as it leaves the listener determined to press play once again.
Press Quotes “Anoice…are as adept at approaching the rock/classical thing from the rock end as the classical end, which gives them more than one string to their bow and potentially makes for some celestial live performances. There’s a ready-made market for evocative, anthemic, cinematic stuff like this, be it on the bill of All Tomorrow’s Parties or soundtracking some intense French film noir…Anoice have that something special that could elevate them even beyond that. This is not a group, as such. These people are modern composers. “ – Glen Johnson, Piano Magic “Even when all of them are going at it they act more like an orchestra, with each player adding his own element to the melody. Anoice hit all the blissful and joyous emotions and only rarely dip into melancholy like most bands of the same ilk.” – Brainwashed

Overview Prepare yourself for this gem of free-improvised-found-sound-collage enriched with dark pagan folky vibes and supernatural horror noise dedicated to HP Lovecraft, Clark Ashton Smith and Austin Osman Spare! Most remember Pestrepeller only as the source material for Sonic Boom’s (Spacemen 3) Pestrepeller remix album. It’s true – while they’re a supergroup of sorts in their 10th year of existence, they’ve still only released three proper albums. When Pestrepeller does make a sound, they make it count, sharing stages with Borbetomagus, David Shea and Alan Turner, among others. Pestrepeller consists of long-celebrated illustrator and Wire journalist Savage Pencil, Evan Parker student and ex-Medicine Head member Peter Hope-Evans, comic artist Ed Pinset, cartoonist Harley Richardson and Rob Brown.
Press Quotes “A quick trip to a psychedelic plane where Sun Ra’s rocksichord pumps up the volume alongside krautrock kozmik couriers Ash Ra Temple while the long shadow of Dada godfather Marcel Duchamp blots out the sun.The perpetrators are Sav X of Art Attacks/Kray Cherubs/Ether Hogg, cult underground comics artist/writer Ed Pinsent, and guitarist/writer Harley Richardson.” – Sympathy “An amorphous scientific manifesto of drone…hypnotic.” – Ptolemaic Terrascope

Overview When Five Horse Johnson formed back in 1995, announcing themselves as a blues band, their friends may have thought they had cause to worry. After all, it is a well-worn banality that white boys can only ever hope to mimic the blues, isn’t it? Thankfully, over the past decade, Five Horse Johnson has happily proven doubters wrong. Over the course of six albums, the band has carved out a niche all their own, combining their love and respect for the blues with classic rock and other less dog-eared influences to become one of the most loved and respected bands in the stoner rock community. Always a right freight train live, the band has spent a lot of time on the road with the likes of Clutch and Halfway To Gone, gathering fans, friends and drinking partners all over the world. Now, with The Mystery Spot and the help of their good friend and newest collaborator Jean Paul Gaster (Clutch) on drums, Five Horse Johnson has created their strongest album to date. The power is there in spades, and the influences are still clear (do I hear a bit of Captain Beefheart in there?). The Mystery Spot is a polished affair, but it’s like the polish on a muscle car: it doesn’t slow the vehicle down one bit. Collaborators include Roadsaw/Antler’s Craig Riggs and Big Chief ’s Phil D & Mark Dancey, all doing what they do best.
Press Quotes “Spawned from the same trailer park that brought us The Hellacopters, Alabama Thunderpussy and touring-mate Johnny Winter, Five Horse Johnson play inbred, ugly, mammoth rock ‘n’ roll slugged out with hairy fists and sore throats…funny and entertaining ballsto-the-walls rock.” – Ink 19 “Eschewing the obvious stoner influences of Sabbath, Vitus and Kyuss, Five Horse Johnson instead seem to hark back to the bluesier likes of Mountain and The Groundhogs…offers a glimpse of what Zeppelin’s fourth album might have sounded like augmented by Mick Jagger in full faux-bluesman mode.” – Rocksound

Overview “Blood-warm rhythms, crisp brilliant guitars and gentle complications abound in this crystal land of hooks and harmonies. This hums with the snap-crackle-pop of odder Cheap Trick, early Bee Gees, and other tunefully wistful masters…Sensations embody the best qualities of earlier artists without sounding much like anyone else.” – Jambase The debut album by one of the finest Bay Area bands to emerge in the last year! Comprised of Greg Loiacono & Paul Hoaglin (from The Mother Hips) and Todd Roper (former Cake drummer), Sensations play inspirational guitar rock in the vein of Muswell Hillbilly-era Kinks, Thunderclap Newman, The Byrds or Simon & Garfunkel. Listen to My Shapes has a fresh, modern approach to garage rock that combines the psychedelic harmonies of the British Invasion with clever lyrics and strong melodies.

The Court & Spark Hearts
With Hearts, The Court & Spark have created their masterwork, a rarified record that seamlessly stitches together shimmering river hymns, fuzzy sci-fi sky songs, acoustic drone in the key of OM, dusky West Coast country and western, spectral discreet music, and serpentine motel blues into an album as rich, nuanced and irreverent as it is ambitious. Since 2000, The Court & Spark has made a series of critically acclaimed albums with Scott Solter (Spoon, Mountain Goats) – the autumnal Ventura Whites, the elegiac Bless You (featuring Gene Parsons of The Byrds), and the hypnotic Witch Season, as well as homespun EPs Double Roses and Dead Diamond River (featuring M.Ward and British chanteuse Linda Thompson). Hearts is the first full-length album to be wholly engineered and produced by the band at their communal home/recording studio, The Alabama Street Station, and is permeated by an easy camaraderie and joyful, exploratory vibrations.

As a child, Carr plucked the guitar one time and sparks began flying. Moving from the delta to the bay and now living in San Francisco, the music on his debut inhabits the middle ground between the picturesque surroundings of his youth and the urbane ambience of his current surroundings. The nine tracks here were partially written under the bright lights of San Francisco and amid the cool breezes of San Juan, Puerto Rico. With the help of some heavy friends, he recorded this modern masterpiece in the heated swamps of Brooklyn during the summer of 2005.The music recalls the sound of Bob Dylan’s darkest mid-‘60s work, with ghostly organs and melodicas complimenting Miller’s impressionistic lyrics. He also follows a line of current brilliant melodicists including Rufus Wainwright, Cass McCombs and the UK’s Ed Harcourt, and is one of the few artists who can appropriate the vibe and songwriting verve of Tom Waits without resorting to the mimicking of Waits’ grizzled, mumbling groan. In the present-day indie scene’s parade of musical hucksters peddling clichéd rehashes of the past, Miller Carr’s debut will surely resonate with music fans looking for an inspired revision of classic songcraft and musical bewilderment.

Overview “Speed/thrash metal at its noisiest…combines Buckethead’s ultra-heavy guitar riffs and shredding solos with sounds of shattered glass for an unbelievably aggressive experience. There’s also a short dub interlude and a hip-hop freakout with lots of scratching and high-pitched shrieks…though this is a great disc, it will put most beginners off by its mind-numbing intensity.” – All Music Guide Over the years, the name Praxis has been applied to a number of loose configurations of musicians either fronted or produced by Bill Laswell, going back to an experimental 12-inch in the early ‘80s on Celluloid Records. Since then, a revolving army of innovators has contributed to Praxis projects. This disc includes P-Funkers Bootsy Collins and Bernie Worrell each contributing one lengthy track: “Deathstar,” with Collins’ free-form bass explorations, and “Crossing,” featuring Worrell’s psychedelic improvisation on a distorted Hammond organ. Also thrown into the mix are Mick Harris (Napalm Death, Scorn) and Yamatsuka Eye (The Boredoms) screaming at the top of their Praxis lungs, plus Blind Idiot God, John Zorn on some shrill alto parts, and lots of ambient samples from Sacrifist Shinya Tsukamoto’s cult film Tetsuo:The Iron Man. Overview “Bill Laswell has almost always been a radical and restless artist, with a mind that wanders like a medieval apothecary picking up and soaking in every element of civilizations long declared dead by the terrible mechanizations of the occidental world. He is a Béla Bartók with wings…an artist who has made it his mission in music to search for more spatial interpretations of harmony and rhythm.” – All About Jazz
Praxis Metatron File Under: Avant Rock CD: SBH 7007 (P)
Beneath the darkly subsonic bass of producer Bill Laswell, the funk-laden beats of Primus drummer Brain and the extreme guitar terror of mutant virtuoso Buckethead, Praxis represents an inspiring, mesmerizing, harrowing foray into the collective mind of a lethally futuristic unit. Group improvisation, musical breadth and sheer sonic assault are all pushed to their outer limits – true to the ethos of “free jazz” outfits like Last Exit and Painkiller, of which Laswell is also a member, but with a brash element of youthful exuberance that gives the music a fresh sound, even newer than “new school.” Whether ambient, dub, funk, hip-hop, metal or avant-garde, each is wired and detonated across a canvas of controlled chaos.
