Featured Artists David J – vocals, piano, organ, bass guitar, bowed guitar Bill Thorp – violin, viola, string arrangement Josie Abbot – cello Kevin Haskins – drums Ego Plum – guitars, bass, drums, percussion
Overview Bauhaus’ David J teamed with V for Vendetta creator and fellow Northampton, UK hipster Alan Moore in 1983 to write a “soundtrack” to Moore’s graphic novel V for Vendetta. At turns dark and atmospheric, then edgy and thrilling, this EP is the perfect sonic partner to Moore’s futuristic tale. From David J’s notes: “In 1983 my friend Alan Moore approached me with the intriguing idea of composing some music to go with a set of his lyrics which would comprise the entire text to an episode of his serialized graphic novel, V for Vendetta. The story was an Orwellian vision of a dystopian near future set in a tyrannized England – the hero V being a mysterious vigilante with a certain vaudevillian bent. When the lyrics dropped in my letterbox, I immediately opened them up, sat down at the piano and played the song through. It was a magical moment; the music came to me in a flow. The original demo is included here and was recorded a couple of days following the song’s composition. Later on, I made a more fully-realized recording incorporating strings expertly arranged by Bill Thorpe. This track, ‘V’s Theme,’ and ‘Incidental’ were released as a 12” EP on Glass Records in 1984. The ‘Overture’ was realized by Ego Plum in 2005, the same year that he and I collaborated on ‘Song from the Kitty Kat Keller.’ Also included in this package are Alan Moore’s original typed lyrics (with my notation) and his letter of instruction, as well as a letter from David Lloyd, the artist who drew the strip.”
Press Quotes “On his solo albums, David J (of Bauhaus and Love and Rockets fame) gets back to his art school roots. His haunting sound collages make use of film noir jazz, snippets of Rubber Soul acoustic pop, the disorienting synth textures of early Pink Floyd and, of course, chiaroscuro Goth shadings.” – Rolling Stone “Warm & meandering, each track stamping its own identity on the mind, the music’s structure is pared down to basics … David J has secured an individual, if confusing, talent.” – Melody Maker “Not actually a David J solo album but a fascinating collaborative effort … the prose for the entire piece comes from past collaborator and longtime Bauhaus/David J supporter and friend Alan Moore. Known predominantly for his inventive, striking comic book work in such classics of the form as V for Vendetta and Watchmen, here he creates an extended, mysterious narrative, half rumination and half invocation … a striking artistic achievement.” – All Music Guide
Selling Points • V for Vendetta is one of 2006’s top-grossing movies – the buzz is overwhelming! • Features songwriting by Alan Moore, the creator of the V for Vendetta graphic novel, and contains a reproduction of Moore’s original typed lyrics • David J’s profile has risen sharply in 2006 due to the Bauhaus reunion and the re-release of his solo albums

Featured Artists John Dwyer – guitar, vocals Patrick Mullins – drums Bridget Dawson – backing vocals
Overview After the release of 2004’s double-disc album 3 & 4, The Ohsees (formally OCS) return with a new slab of utter innocence. The Cool Death of Island Raiders features eleven tracks of a pure acoustic/folk/synth-pop with a bounce – tunes only a soulless vampire couldn’t enjoy, like snappy teddy bear anthems for the lingering ten-year-old in us all. Here, the band turned to Dave Sitek of TV on the Radio to work his production magic, taking The Ohsees down a more refined, pop-sensible route. It’s as if they threw a sheet of fresh, pathological playfulness over a dusty loft mattress, creating by far the best goo-rock/bedroom folk our world has ever heard. It’s hard to imagine that something so innocent could spawn from the mind of America’s underground trash-rock king, John Dwyer. After the demise of his legendary garage threesome The Coachwhips late last year, Dwyer decided to center The Ohsees as his numero uno. Along with Dwyer’s distant vocals and guitar, The Ohsees features Patrick Mullins (Burmese) on percussion and newcomer Brigid Dawson, a UK native who adds loads of soft and delightful backing vocals to the band’s signature hushed ‘n’ mushed sound.
Press Quotes “Offers a cracked view of acoustic roots music.” – Time Out NY “John Dwyer carefully builds hypnotic soundscapes with a repetitive, acoustic strumming rooted in primitive, dark country music. He adds an echo of strange static sound effects that are equal parts train rumble and wind whistle to occupy the blank canvas space. The effect is mesmerizing.” – Punk Planet “Tiny fragments of rock ‘n’ roll curl around themselves, reverberating, leaving a trail of sparkling miniature harmonies behind.” – Plan B “Evokes scratchy-voiced singer-songwriters in the ilk of M.Ward only to turn around two tracks later and give the impression of a Velvet Underground B-side.” – Rockpile

Featured Artists Kidd Jordan – tenor sax Hamid Drake – drums, tablas, frame drum, vocals William Parker – bass, guimbri, gongs, talking drum
Overview For some time, AUM Fidelity has wanted to produce an album featuring legendary New Orleans saxophonist Kidd Jordan with fellow master musicians William Parker and Hamid Drake. Finally, everything came together last summer – and then Hurricane Katrina hit. A week later, when AUM finally reached Jordan by phone and asked if he would still be able to make the session, he said, “Yeah man, let’s do it!” Kidd Jordan is the patriarch of one of New Orleans’ three principal contemporary families of music (along with the Marsalis’ and the Nevilles). A partial list of artists he has performed with over the last 40+ years includes Ray Charles, Stevie Wonder, Frank Sinatra, Aretha Franklin, The Supremes, Ornette Coleman, Sun Ra Arkestra, Ellis Marsalis, The Temptations, and Cecil Taylor. From the gorgeously gentle space-search “Forever” and the epic saga “Living Peace” to the deep North African grooves on “Unity Call,” Palm of Soul presents three master musicians in intimate musical conversation at the highest levels, rendering songs and trance pieces that elicit the full gamut of emotions. A major, utterly distinct and distinguished album work, this is, most definitely, foreground music.
Press Quotes “Other than it being wicked strong, there’s no telling what Kidd Jordan will blow next.” – New York Press “Jordan launches his solos by building them layer by dynamic layer. He circles as a bird of prey, absorbing all the positives flowing from the band, and then he plunges into the heart of the tunes with an exhilarating display of creative genius. [He ignites] the atmosphere with an overwhelming abundance of innovation and musicality.” – One Final Note “William Parker and Hamid Drake redefine the notion of a powerhouse free jazz rhythm section. Two of the most soulful and spiritual voices in avant-garde jazz.” – Other Music
Selling Points • First trio meeting of three master musicians: legendary New Orleans saxophonist Kidd Jordan, NYC bassist William Parker and Chicago drummer Hamid Drake • Recorded three weeks after Hurricane Katrina destroyed New Orleans (Kidd Jordan’s home included) • Packaged in deluxe six-panel digipak with gorgeous artwork • Full service & promotion to national press and e-media by AUM Fidelity • Full service & promotion to college, non-commercial, and NPR radio by AUM Fidelity • Ads will run in Signal to Noise, Arthur, Point of Departure, and more

Featured Artists Dave Burrell – piano Billy Martin – percussion
Overview An extreme, improvised, live musical journey that resembles modern classical and free jazz – and what makes it work is the unique chemistry between the two musicians! This recording documents the second impromptu meeting of two unique musical personalities during one week in October 2005. Dave Burrell has forged his own unique avant-garde style of playing since the 1970s in New York, where he played with Albert Ayler, Pharoah Sanders, and David Murray. Billy Martin, best known for his percussion work and drumming with avant-funk bands Medeski Martin and Wood and John Lurie’s Lounge Lizards, is also well known for his experimentation with many forms of experimental, African, jazz, funk, and classical music.
Press Quotes “Dave Burrell’s unaccompanied recital of new compositions astonished with his range of expression and emotional depth. His sound was admirably fat [and] his articulation was incisive.” – New York Times “Dave Burrell [is] a consistently insightful pianist [and] a scintillating solo performer.” – Village Voice “Dave Burrell’s solos are pianistic pearls.” – Down Beat “Medeski Martin and Wood bridge the gap between the New York downtown jazz scene, which features the avant-garde guru John Zorn, and the New England jam-band touring circuit, led by the popular improv-rock group Phish … drummer Billy Martin consistently strikes loose-limbed, flexible grooves.” – Rolling Stone
Selling Points • The debut from this duo, who plan to tour worldwide • Dave Burrell and Billy Martin will open the Vision Festival NYC on June 13, 2006 • Expected press in major jazz publications

Press Quotes “Outside of Derek Bailey and John Fahey, I’ve never heard such purity in guitar playing.” – Jim O’Rourke “[Connors] is an American original in much the same sense as John Fahey or Jandek, in that he’s chosen a classically American form, in this case the blues, and in true pioneer spirit, taken it off somewhere else.” – The Wire “One of my generation’s finest and most fervently iconoclast musical voices.” – Byron Coley

Overview Luke Fischbeck has been making Lucky Dragons music for almost seven years. He is an industrious tinkerer, and very clever with words. He has made so much great music in the past seven years that States Rights Records recently released a retrospective of his work entitled Sewing Circle. Fischbeck’s latest album, Widows, was recorded on three separate occasions, then endlessly torn apart and mashed together over the course of a year. One of the things Fischbeck discovered with this album was “a tradition of American culture that I agreed with, even felt inspired by.This is my attempt at making American music – music that describes and remembers and criticizes and embraces and expresses and illustrates and ornaments and digests and shits out what it means to be American.” With an impressive array of instrumentalists and Fischbeck’s established talent, Widows is truly mythical, mystical, and amazing.
Press Quotes “Under the name Lucky Dragons, Luke Fischbeck creates ecstatic music that completely transcends genres. My attempts to describe what his music actually sounds like always falls short of the magic he is making. I guess you could say it sounds like ecstatic magic. Challenging stereotypes that electronic music is cold and sterile, Fischbeck’s live show … is a truly great celebration of the human spirit, giving real hope for the techno-future our society is racing toward.” – Art Forum “A line between the handmade and the distanced digital … a successful forging of the personal detritus [and] the mic-ed moments between moments.” – All Music Guide “Lucky Dragons craft some of the most humane, confused, and staggeringly beautiful lap-pap I’ve ever had the pleasure of hearing.” – Portland Mercury

Overview “Stumbling somewhere between Bob Seger and Nick Cave, Antler provide the perfect soundtrack for blackouts, bad news, breakups, and breakdowns.” – CMJ Born under a bad sign in 2002, Antler is the newest addition to the Small Stone stable. Steeped in classic rock heritage, their rustic eloquence is gleaned from oily rags, dented chrome, empty bottles, and dingy motel rooms.Their six-man roster and blue-collar soul are throwbacks to the nights when Skynyrd and the Allmans took over the Fillmore ‘cause they needed the legroom. Featuring 3/4 of the mighty Roadsaw, the members possess both the road-warrior pedigree and sonic wherewithal of true rock champions. As such, they deliver an album devoid of crass, retrograde romanticism. Dark lyricism, rough & tumble twin guitars, weeping organ riffs, and whiskey-throated vocals lock together like the callused fingers of a hangman’s fist lowering the noose over the throat of the condemned.
Selling Points • Produced by Craig Riggs (Five Horse Johnson, Scissorfight, Waltham) • Mixed by Andrew Schneider (Scissorfight, Cave In, Throttlerod, Blue Man Group) • Antler will tour the U.S. and Europe in Fall 2006.Their European tourmates will consist of both Five Horse Johnson and Honky • Antler performed at CMJ 2005 and SXSW 2006 as part of the coveted Small Stone showcase • Major media mailing in conjunction with release date • Spots on Viva La Bam,Wild Boys, Fuel TV, and other extreme sports shows

Melk the G6-49 Mene mene tekel parsin
Joyful Noise presents a reissue of the gritty, all-improv debut from Midwestern noise rock outfit Melk the G6-49, originally released in 2001 on Ol’ Gravy Records. In this forty-two-minute piece, the duo composed of John Spencer and Karl Hofstetter unleash the first fruits of their spiritual havoc into the world.Though still for the most part unknown, Melk the G6-49 would go on to achieve critical acclaim with 2002’s self-titled album and 2004’s Glossolalia, which was featured as one of 2004’s Best Records on NPR. Mene mene tekel parsin captures the earliest stage in the evolution of Melk. With this recording, we see the duo in their most introverted and uncompromising form. The pieces are just three of many lost recording sessions from the primitive Melk. This is the recorded history of two young men experimenting in the only way they knew how, and we can’t help but feel that they stumbled upon something remarkable.

TO ITS ROSTER
Greydawn Records is a DIY imprint operated by Greyday Records. Designed to allow self-producing Portland artists to gain North American distribution while still maintaining control of their releases, Greydawn exists solely as a resource. This is truly artist-controlled, Portland DIY music.
Overview “Sketch out a triangle with space rock, orch pop and Americana as its points;TMTR roam freely across the vast, three-cornered space between them, shifting easily from string-assisted melodic dirges to drawn-out minimalist piano figures to gently soaring steel guitar licks.” – Splendid The Mouse That Roared croons and drones to suggest a snapshot of time where you can meditate on the concept of becoming nothing, harkening back to sixties British pop tempered with American folk sensibilities and seventies progressive rock. Excommunicator is the product of two years of attempting to deconstruct conventional pop songs and reassemble them into a coherent organism. While the bulk of the album contains tight pop melodies framed in Americana transmitted from the future ghost of Juice Newton, the beginning and end are sprawling psych landscapes that define the entire journey.

Overview “Pieces that began as alt country songs move farther and farther away from their origins, evolving into a combination of Americana, jazz, and ambient that could no longer be put into any category … [it] never touches the dusty, pothole-filled streets, but instead seems to float, to the effect that, as in David Lynch’s Lost Highway, you see the yellow-painted median lines flying by … 4 stars.” – Rolling Stone Like You Believe It is the second album from Seattle’s Downpilot, whose personnel include members of the Wedding Present, Jesse Sykes & The Sweet Hereafter, Laura Veirs, and Tortured Souls. Their debut, Leaving Not Arriving, received high praise from national magazines like Rolling Stone, No Depression, and Harp, as well as strong support regionally. Influential Seattle radio station KEXP has already been championing Like You Believe It, and will add the album to coincide with its release.

File Still Under: Punk was assembled in late 2004 by singer/songwriter Sean Rawls. San Francisco supergroup Flyin’ CD: RCL 17 (O) By the time he arrived on the West Coast, he was already a veteran of various Athens, GA bands, including Masters of the Hemisphere and Je Suis France. For the latter band, Rawls wrote a reggae song, “Never Gonna Touch the Ground,” which quickly became a live show staple and a crowd favorite. Soon, the song seemed to have a life of its own and demanded to be jammed. Rawls decided he needed to form a band based on that song, and the dream of Still Flyin’ was born. Rawls asked virtually everyone he knew in his new city to join the reggae-inspired project, and to everyone’s surprise the first practice included fifteen people. What began as a lighthearted nod to good times soon became a juggernaut, and before long the band had become a San Francisco phenomenon. Of course, it didn’t hurt that the nascent supergroup counts members of Track Star, Aislers Set, Ladybug Transistor, Love Is All, Maserati, and Red Pony Clock amongst it’s rotating collective. The band’s hybrid of rocksteady, roots reggae, and dub plays out in energetic and joyfully chaotic live shows that have gotten even the most skeptical indie rock asses shaking. The party atmosphere is infectious!

Overview “Pzychobitch did a fantastic job with this album. The way it was mixed was phenomenal. Frank Klatt and Stefan Böhm do a great job with the drums, bass, and synths, but the mysterious, powerful voice and stunning good looks of Sina Hübner really provide the group with a certain aura that sets them aside from the others. Buy this and you will not be disappointed!” – Shazam A new German sensation is emerging from the electronic underground to make its way directly into the alternative indie charts! After the success of The Day After, Pzychobitch is back with their third studio album, and this time the music is even more mature and complex. Cool electro beats mesh with smooth bass lines to create a heavy pulse and give frontwoman Sina Hübner the perfect backdrop for her incredible vocal range. Morphing from sultry to outright angry, Hübner’s voice is both strong and sexy. Electrolicious is a sonic landmark for the genre, shamelessly pillaging the world of electronic music and recombining the loot into a powerful, seamless electro cocktail that will rock the floor!

Overview “One of the wonders of flamenco is the way the most elemental human sounds – raw vocal utterances and handclaps – are wedded to the most sophisticated and virtuosic music. Guitarist Paco de Lucía is one of the international high-profile heroes of flamenco, deeply immersed in idiom, yet always willing to stray from the path … [features] beautiful vocals by La Tana and the emotive, Pastoriusinfluenced fretless bass of Alain Perez. The rhythmic rapport between de Lucia’s guitar and Piraña’s percussion is a constant delight.” – The Guardian
La Tana & Paco de Lucía Tú, ven a mí File Under: Alt World CD: COP 3027 (M)
It is no exaggeration to say that Paco de Lucía revolutionized the role of the guitar in flamenco music and today stands as its most revered figure. After 30 years of earning international acclaim, winning legions of devout fans worldwide, and exerting a towering influence on a generation of young flamenco guitarists, the maestro now breaks new ground once again! La Tana is a young flamenco singer from Seville whose early professional experience involved accompanying the dancing of Farruquito and Joaquín Cortés. Paco de Lucía discovered her in a bar in Seville, and immediately made her part of the team for his album Cositas Buenas. Her debut, Tú ven a mí, features Paco de Lucía, Javier Limón, Alain Pérez, Piraña, and Caramelo de Cuba. One of the most interesting recent offerings from a new generation of flamenco musicians!

Artists like Los Lobos, Unwritten Law, Ozomatli, Blackalicious, Fishbone, and The Ziggens came together for one night only to put on a show for the ages. And, to top it off, many of the artists from the evening (as well as some surprise special guests) teamed up to belt out Sublime classics in the ultimate jam session. Now, everyone can relive that magical night with this special CD+DVD combo! The audio CD contains never-before-heard covers of Sublime hits and fan favorites, from a brand-new studio recording of “Ebin” by The Banned with Chuck D (Public Enemy) to a rockin’ live version of Fishbone’s “Date Rape.” These incredible tracks were not featured on the Look at All the Love We Found CD, and can only be found here! The DVD features include a performance of “Pawn Shop” with original Sublime member Bud Gaugh on drums, a music video for Fishbone’s version of “Date Rape,” and backstage interviews with Los Lobos, MURS, Unwritten Law, and more. It also includes an in-depth photo slideshow and a behind-the-scenes look at the all-star jam rehearsal that included Stephen Perkins (Jane’s Addiction), Ikey Owens (The Mars Volta), Eric Wilson (Sublime), and many more.

Overview West Coast psychedelic folkie Nick Castro is currently making some of most dynamic and truly original sounds to emerge from the much-ballyhooed new folk movement. Gracefully balancing sixties/seventies British Isles acid balladry and Middle Eastern traditional music with heady, pan-cultural communal jams, Castro succeeds in reaching otherworldly vistas and ocean-spanning folk transcendence. Following up 2005’s lauded Further from Grace, Nick Castro unfurls his sprawling third album Come Into Our House, easily his most far-reaching and deeply molecular outing yet. Previously backed by The Poison Tree, which included Josephine Foster and members of Espers, Castro has assembled a new band of players under the moniker The Young Elders, a truly stellar cast of musicians whose combined resumes include folk and avant rock ensembles Current 93, In Gowan Ring, Damo Suzuki’s Network, and Cul de Sac. Castro has found a lineup in The Young Elders that fully articulates his vast and grandiose visions, and subsequently Come Into Our House shimmers brightly in sound and scope. An East-meets-West melting pot of instrumentation – from acoustic guitars, upright bass and piano to Celtic harp, Moroccan tabla and nyabinghi drum – Come Into Our House is at once primitive and polished, elaborate yet elusive, seamlessly tying Bert Jansch or Vashti Bunyan-style folk song, California psychedelic folk rock and Middle Eastern traditional music to a kind of organic studio musique concrete that Can forged on albums like Tago Mago. The results are astonishing and utterly psychedelic. A modern acid-folk masterwork.
Press Quotes “Positively shimmers with willowy, sun-dappled ensemble playing, and firmly establishes Castro as yet another noteworthy voice of the present acid folk resurgence.” – Pitchforkmedia “A wonderfully soft-spoken and masterfully crafted folk album, ornamented with cautiously created traces of experimental passages, organic drones and Amon Düül-like communal trance.” – Ptolemaic Terrascope

Featured Artists Masami Akita – electronics, EMS synth
Overview Minazo is Merzbow’s tribute to a beloved male elephant seal that lived life in captivity at a Tokyo aquarium. Masami Akita often visited Minazo, and was allowed access to him behind the scenes. Minazo was the only male elephant seal in Japan, and became very popular through several TV appearances. He was forced to perform various stunts before audiences at each mealtime. This hard work made him exhausted, and might have caused his early death. Minazo died in October 2005 at eleven years old, still young for an elephant seal whose life expectancy is twenty years on average. According to Masami Akita, “Many of the aquariums in Japan have become mere amusement establishments. I believe that they should eventually end the exhibition of animals in the name of academic research, and instead start functioning as animal shelters only … whatever the cause of death, I feel sad and angry each time I hear about animals dying in captivity far away from their natural habitat.”
Press Quotes “There’s no need to argue. Merzbow stands as the most influential figure in noise music.” – All Music Guide “There is likely no better-known noise artist than Masami Akita, a.k.a. Merzbow … a trance-inducing rumble, a vaguely rhythmic pulse with rising and falling fuzz, playful sounds dropped in here and there.” – Dusted “An hour of good Merzbow certainly has a transformative effect.” – Pitchforkmedia “One of the acknowledged overlords of this extreme genre, there seemed few avenues which [Merzbow] hadn’t explored with the palette he’d set himself. Then, with 2005’s barrage of more rhythmic work, Merzbow opened up a whole new dimension to explore … Merzbow has become an altogether different musical animal; you haven’t heard it all before.” – Stylus

Overview Three is not a crowd.Three Blind Mice,Three Little Pigs,Three Musketeers,Three Mile Island,The Big Three,The Third Sefira. In the Life Path, “three” indicates a strong sense of creativity with wonderful communication skills. Achievement most likely comes through engaging ingenious expression. A truly gifted “three” possesses the most exceptional innovative skills, normally in the verbal realm. Here, we are apt to find the entertainers of the world – bright, effervescent, sparkling people. A recording divided into three by three – the Egg came first. 3 Eggs is the first collaboration between The Hafler Trio, Colin Potter, and Andrew Liles, originally recorded to be a tour-only item. Unfortunately, the tour had to be cancelled, but the disc lived on and is now available in a limited edition of 1,000.
Press Quotes “Prolific and enigmatic, The Hafler Trio masterminded some of the most challenging and innovative sonic experiments of their time – defining music as simply organized sound, their unique synthesis of electronics, samples and tape loops probed the psychoacoustic power of noise, exploring not only its sensory effects but its physical ramifications as well.” – All Music Guide “Hiding behind a misleading name, Andrew McKenzie is a sort of legend when it comes to electronic music. He formed The Hafler Trio with ex-Cabaret Voltaire member Chris Watson in the early eighties, and has since produced some of the most challenging experimental electronic music around, with a body of work spread over countless releases.” – The Milk Factory “The art of the sound collage and drone music has a group of key members. Mirror, Christoph Heemann, Andrew Chalk, William Basinski, and perhaps just a few more are known and loved and create music that invokes images from other worlds; be those images frightening, sublime, or esoteric, it is impossible to deny their visceral impact. Andrew Liles has been added to that list of elusive and wonderful musicians.” – Brainwashed
Selling Points • All three artists on 3 Eggs are highly recognized sound artists • Colin Potter has been involved in the world of underground music since the late seventies. He founded one of the earliest cassette labels in the UK (ICR) and was a key figure in the production of work by Nurse With Wound, Current 93, and Organum • Andrew Liles has been recording eclectic, minimalist music since the mid-eighties and has worked with Bass Communion, Steven Stapleton, Darren Tate, and more • Press mailing by Important Records • Ads will run in Signal to Noise,The Wire, and more

Overview The Belly of the Whale project was brilliantly conceived by two of the prime movers in the Natural Art scene: Interspecies and Greenmuseum. The goal was to create digital music from underwater sound samples of creatures like orcas, dolphins, beluga whales, sperm whales, humpback whales, bearded seals, lobsters, shrimp, and more.Together, Interspecies and Greenmuseum compiled a sample CD of 350 captured sounds and sent it out to many of their favorite electronic artists. Nineteen composers responded. The eclectic group included Scanner, commissioned to compose the National Anthem for the European Union; Petri Kuljuntausta, recently honored as Finland’s Artist of the Year; Christina della Guistina & Jayne Fenton Keynes, who have won awards for their music worldwide; Merzbow, well-known for his noise art; Kent Clelland, a senior programmer for Native Instruments in Berlin; and even drummer John Hanes, whose credits include the theme music for the film Grizzly Man. What’s most compelling about this project is the thoughtful way that the artists have listened and responded, both individually and as a community, to the sounds of our environment. It is a unique blend of modern electronic music and underwater educational experience that includes some of the foremost electronic composers in the world making music for two of the foremost groups in the Natural Art world. Further emphasizing the various artistic perspectives is the brilliant source material, which is included as a special bonus disc. Those who purchase Belly of the Whale are encouraged to send in their own versions, the best of which will be uploaded to the Important, Interspecies, and Greenmuseum websites for download.

Overview “A gorgeous collection. The voice echoes Van the Man, Jagger and Dylan at their soulful, musical best. But Jesse DeNatale somehow remains his own man, with his own memories, stories, and visions. They’re not only well worth hearing, they’re well worth hearing again and again.” – Ben Fong-Torres, former Rolling Stone senior editor Jesse DeNatale’s second release highlights the Bay Area songwriter’s eloquent merging of musical heritage – both folk & Tin Pan Alley – and contemporary song structures. This album is a paean to San Francisco and a simple meditation on life and death. DeNatale has described his music as “troubadour soul,” a mix of the folk story tradition with an inspired sense of rhythm & blues. Always feeling a strong influence from the geography specific to the area he is in, and the history of its people, DeNatale’s songwriting is imbued with optimism and humor, refreshingly free of sarcasm and irony. His fanbase includes Rambling Jack Elliott, U.S. Poet Laureate Billy Collins, and Tom Waits, who described him as “a unique and original American voice.”

Overview “Kicking out diamond-hard mid-tempo space-blues that crackle with trip-hop loops and freaked-out fuzz guitar, Missing Numbers evoke strange but intriguing descriptions: Howling Wolf fronting The Bad Seeds, or King Tubby remixing The Faces with J. Mascis on lead guitar. This is modern electric blues for a grimy urban reality – broken yet beautiful, bummed but proud.” – City Pages Top 10 Bands of 2004
File Under: Alt Rock CD: JSC 59 (Q)
No Anecdote is the new album from Missing Numbers. Led by songwriter and instrumentalist Jimmy Peterson, this Minneapolis band is already creating a sound and vibe totally its own. No Anecdote is a collection of songs that are dark, melodic, and totally modern, yet evocative of distant and dangerous times. Peterson’s songs traffic in disenchantment, disillusionment, damaged dreams, and threadbare silver linings. He writes a sort of modern blues for a world where the cubicle is the new cotton mill and white-collar sharecroppers toil for the mortgage man.Yet the mood of the material never falls into self-pity, and there are always twisted, maddeningly catchy pop hooks hidden in the tracks. Peterson, whose utterly unique and beautifully world-weary singing style won him a Minnesota Music Award for Vocalist of the Year, has assembled his strongest collection of songs to date.

Balún is an electro-acoustic pop outfit that composes soft and sweet rhythmic sound collages – simple guitar riffs and subdued glitchy beats with bells, violin, and accordion. The product of Balún’s sound is one of nostalgia or, better yet, daydreaming – music for when you realize you’ve wandered into an unfamiliar place, but you don’t mind that you’re lost. Along with acts such as Superaquello and Phasmid, Balún are developing a cult following in the blossoming San Juan underground scene. Although influenced by American and European indie bands (Ulrich Schnauss, Múm, Boards of Canada, I Am Robot and Proud), they still exhibit a sonic attachment to their native Puerto Rico. Overview “A glorious, hallucinatory piece of work.” – All Music Guide A Gilded Age signals the dawning of a new era for N&W. Selzer has long demonstrated the ability to craft exquisitely defined, sonically arresting songs, but with A Gilded Age (recorded at Type Foundry Studios), he helps Norfolk & Western flex their songwriting muscles with dramatic, singular results. The songs on A Gilded Age cascade dynamically and unrelentingly – elevating the long-form EP format to new heights – from the trademark Victrola opening to the positively invigorating, overdriven guitar and banjo attack of the title track. Perhaps more so than any band in recent memory, Norfolk & Western have distilled their strengths with a collection of songs so undeniably strong they are virtually assured a spot in the canon of indie-folk legends. The LP release of this album collects three new tracks: “Border, Oklahoma,” previously found on the Centralia album, as well as covers of “Marie” by folk hero Townes Van Sandt and the unlikely “Seven Seas” by Echo & The Bunnymen.
