Featured Artists Alec Empire – guitars, programming, vocals Nic Endo – programming
Overview Alec Empire is many things to many people: a man with an extraordinary recording history, the musical revolutionary behind avant-garde noise-punk outfit Atari Teenage Riot, an electronic music experimentalist who has made records on a Gameboy, and a consummate musician who has worked with an extraordinarily broad range of peers. He has remixed artists as diverse as blues legend R.L. Burnside, Sonic Youth’s Thurston Moore, Björk, Rob Zombie, The Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, Slayer, Einstürzende Neubauten, and members of the new hip-hop generation like Company Flow and Prince Paul’s Handsome Boy Modeling School. He has toured with Rage Against the Machine, Wu-Tang Clan, Beck, Ministry, and Nine Inch Nails. Alec Empire’s new album, Futurist, is the most fully integrated vision of his twenty-first century rebellion yet. A blistering alliance of primitive punk fury and advanced technological overload, Futurist heralds the return of the guitar to the center of Empire’s musical vision. The characteristic shockwave aggression of his previous outings is still channeled for maximum impact, but the gun-to-temple blasts of tracks like “Gotta Get Out” deliver their powderkeg payloads with a newly discovered blood rush of excitement. Futurist is the most brutally uplifting Empire has ever sounded.
Press Quotes “Empire has tapped into something vital, dangerous, and all-too-absent from so much rock music today … this isn’t the death of rock ‘n’ roll but a blasting, needle-in-the-red affirmation of its power.Turn it up.” – Kerrang “Empire’s keen intelligence … blazes through every track in a merciless assault on apathy that’s also strangely optimistic, like a dove bearing a petrol bomb. The revolution may not be televised, but it’s definitely been soundtracked.” – NME “While he may not be Atari or teenage anymore, Alec Empire is still running riot. This is guitar-heavy industrial punk aggression – some of the most forceful music Empire has written since the ATR breakthrough Future of War album – over which he pours forth disquisition and diatribe, railing against totalitarianism and authority in all its guises.” – Rocksound

“[The Cairo Gang’s] elegant and lyrical playing reflects influences as diverse as ‘60s Brit folkie Steve Ashley and post-punk virtuoso Nels Cline.” – Chicago Reader
Overview The Cairo Gang create six a.m. soothe-core for the puzzled punch-drunks of the world, picking up where Elliot Smith left off with true lemon drop tunes for the downtrodden. This is rock ‘n’ roll for when you want to snuggle up with the dictionary, discovering new terms to explain why you’ve abruptly shaved off your mohawk, bought some old suits, and grew an intense obsession with J.D. Salinger. The Cairo Gang’s self-titled debut full-length is a track-by-track blueprint illustrating each and every facet of the emotional spectrum. Over the course of recent years, The Cairo Gang has been a lingering passion for Emmett Kelly, a stimulated singer/songwriter with an impressive list of musicians in his Rolodex. Performing both solo and with a backing band, Kelly always brings a fresh thrill to the world of quiet rock music. Originating in Los Angeles, he bounced around the globe before The Cairo Gang eventually landing in Chicago. After mastering countless instruments, Kelly decided to put his skills to The Cairo Gang work and record some tunes that had been afloat in his headspace. And thank the heavens he did, File Under: Alt Rock because this album perfectly tweaks the butterflies in all of our stomachs. CD: NNK 7038 (N)

Featured Artists Davis Lee Hooker – vocals Matt Genz – bass Scott Sloan – six-string guitar Sam Humans – drum kit
Overview ...Worms have re-opened a genre in Portland by bringing audiences experimental, thrashing shows full of complex, flashing, screaming artcore punk music. Comprised of four members with a long history in other projects, it is tough to know what to expect at one of their shows. You’ll hear the album versions of songs, maybe get hit with spray foam or blood capsules, and perhaps enjoy a cappella versions of their favorites. Whatever ...Worms decides to serve up, they are definitely making beautiful, horrible music. A follow-up to their debut 7”, the ...Worms’ second self-titled album contains more of those four men making crazy sounds together; lovely and terrible art-core from Portland’s Davis Lee Hooker (A John Henry Memorial, Watery Graves), Sam Humans (Modernstate), Matt Genz, and Scott Sloan. In the band's own words, this is an album about "the death of the republic, hatred of the imperialistic police state, the complacency of zombified consumers, kids playing into the hands of the corporate beast by buying mass-produced spiked belts … [about] making music that incites violence, combining words to form new words that state the true nature of current events."
Press Quotes “Seasick, dizzying post-post-punk whose closest points of sonic reference are U.S. Maple and Midwestern no-wave band Swob in terms of its attack … unintelligible lyrics are shouted off as guitars fire and drums pound. Give these guys a round of meds to chill them out a bit. Fun stuff.” – Dusted “Local four-piece ...Worms are as curious as their name.Their experimental noise music is fronted by a madcap singer who screams, screeches, and basically just freaks the hell out while the rest of the band hammers away at their instruments.” – Portland Mercury

Fowl Language by the Vulturines is a parade of Americana, both freaked-out and traditional. Songwriters Jennifer Saez and Corbin Supak have played music together since their college days back in Austin (as Vidi Vitties). Saez was raised all over the world by Spanish-speaking parents, spending time in New Orleans, Saudi Arabia, Switzerland, and Washington DC. She was studying the blues in Austin when she met Supak, who is a fourth generation Austinite and the son of a school band director. He takes influence from the full range of Texas ethnicities and their music, being descended from Czech tuba players and Mexican balladeers. In Portland since 2002, the Vulturines is the couple’s second major band, and Fowl Language is their debut.

Overview “Hairshirt move beyond the basement of free-form noise and the crunch of the garage into an area of catchy, intensely beautiful songs that maintain a certain ‘80s post-punk edge.” – WDET FM Nothing is quite as powerful as new sounds crackling onto fresh ears, as one can see from the effect that American punk had on Bosnian Amir Husak. Inspiration sprung forth, Iggy Pop records taught him to speak English, and he was lured to Detroit, meeting like-minded musicians in an effort to bridge inspiration into fruition. After spending the winter months experimenting in a warehouse, Hairshirt emerged in Summer 2002. Drawing upon a broad range of influences (from Can to Echo & The Bunnymen), Hairshirt set themselves apart from their contemporaries. The result landed packed shows across the Detroit area, a short tour of Germany, and a single on Boyarm Records. Now, Contraphonic continues to capture tomorrow’s Detroit sound today with the release of Hairshirt’s Lover Politician EP. Over the course of twenty-five minutes, a delicate aural assault unfolds, from the Hairshirt chiming beginnings of sly anthem “Like a Leaf” to the spaced-out Can-cum-Residents dub of “Trapper Lover Politician EP Keepers” and the velvety psych of closing track “Rubber Hands.” File Under: Alt Rock/Indie Pop CDEP: CTP 55 (E)

Overview “Bringing to mind Cat Power (there’s an uncanny vocal resemblance to Chan Marshall) and the air-between-the-notes bareness of Rosie Thomas, Colour Green is a 30-year-old, dead-on emotional footnote that was worth every amount of effort to unearth.” – Magnet During a particularly dark and moody period of her young life in Germany, a friend of Sibylle Baier’s dragged her out from under the bed and took her on a road trip, ending up across the Alps in Genoa. Upon returning from this trip, Baier felt her sprits renewed. Grateful to be alive, she set out to write her first song, “Remember the Day.” Baier’s music is simply amazing in its intimacy and closeness. Recorded in the late seventies on a reel-to-reel recording device, the songs on Colour Green are dear portraits of life’s sad and fragile beauty. It is a gem of an album, and it will blow your mind. Featured Artists Roscoe Mitchell – sopranino, saxes, flute, piccolo, percussion Joseph Jarman – sopranino, saxes, flute, eb flute, bass flute, percussion Corey Wilkes – trumpet, pocket trumpet, flugelhorn, percussion Jaribu Shahid – bass, electric bass, percussion Don Moye – drums, African drums, congas, bongos
Overview A live recording by the Art Ensemble of Chicago provides the listener with an opportunity to relive the experience that helped etch the band’s name in history three and a half decades ago. This 2XCD set captures the quintet in the midst of a five-day stretch at the Iridium in New York. Made up of music from the weekend sets, the CD documents the band performing as a quintet for the first time since the early nineties. With chanted vocals by Joseph Jarman, funky vamps, classic material, hard-bop, open explorations, and a dedication to a past comrade, this disc continues Pi Recordings’ documentation of one of America’s greatest treasures. With the front line once again filled out as it was in the beginning, the band stretches out, interacts, and enlivens the music in the manner that has influenced everyone from Vandermark 5 and John Zorn to Antipop Consortium. More space can be heard in the music, the band’s interaction seems closer, and the focus moves to the moment in a way that is not always heard in a studio recording. Another focus here is the induction of Corey Wilkes and Jaribu Shahid as new members. Both Wilkes and Shahid have been performing with Roscoe Mitchell for some time now.Wilkes in particular has been a frequent collaborator of Mitchell’s since 2003, but becoming a regular working member of the AEOC brings with it a certain raised expectation level.
Press Quotes “This is perhaps the most sublime of the Art Ensemble of Chicago’s three albums since their troubled regrouping a couple of years ago.” – Boston Phoenix “Here they emerge in duos, trios, and collective scenes … with their own particular majesty, often something quite simple, a cryptic slice of musical wisdom.” – Down Beat “Roscoe Mitchell and Joseph Jarman finish each others’ sentences – the lines seem to share a single provenance, as if they were played by the right and left hands of a single eccentric keyboardist … indeed, the AEOC’s group sound is luminous.” – JazzTimes
Selling Points • This is the AEOC’s first release since 2004, and their first quartet recording with the new lineup featuring Corey Wilkes and Jaribu Shahid • The Meeting and Sirius Calling, previous AEOC releases on Pi Recordings, met with critical success as well as strong sales numbers • Pi Recordings will do a full press mailing to top music publications and a full radio mailing to CMJ, Jazz Week, and NPR stations • Ads will run in Down Beat and JazzTimes as well as on music websites

Featured Artists Josh Fischel – lead vocals, guitar
Overview Long Beach’s Bargain Music is a wildly eclectic revolving door centered on the songwriting and vocals of lone original member Josh Fischel. Drawing comparisons to such diverse artists as Prince, Van Morrison, Frank Zappa, Neil Young, Ween, and Iron Maiden, Bargain Music ties rock, soul, folk, country, reggae, and metal together with quirky, personal, evocative lyrics. Recently, Fischel recorded this full-length solo acoustic effort, featuring some of his strongest songwriting to date along with memorable covers of songs by Tears for Fears, Lyle Lovett, and The Who. It’s the soulful, melodic sound of Fischel’s voice, lent to a couple of tracks on the recent Sublime tribute Look at All the Love We Found, that inspires old fans and new audiences alike.
Press Quotes “A big, beautiful mess.” – OC Weekly “The most welcome surprise on the Warped Tour.” – Spin “Mixing twisted eclectic lyrics similar to those of Primus and a musical style that wanders through every genre, Bargain Music crafts songs that rely upon the band’s odd lyrical outlook to tie them together.” – Aversion “Musically, Bargain Music is all over the place … but more often than not, their work tends to be on the funky side, and the valid comparisons range from the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Living Colour, Primus, Prince, and Rick James to Peter Tosh and Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry.” – All Music Guide
Selling Points • Contains a short documentary on the making of American Born with studio footage of Josh Fischel talking about the meanings of songs, the making of the album, the cover artwork, and more • Bargain Music has performed with Lee “Scratch” Perry, Los Lobos, Mike Watt, The Shapeshifters, Buckethead, Run-DMC, and Fishbone • Service to top CMJ college reporters; targeted marketing campaign on MySpace and M80 • Ads will run in Relix, Heads, Harp, Rockpile, CMJ, Magnet, and Mean Street

In Michael Gibbons’ own words: “The ear of the CD: RCL 17 (O) musician detects a certain musical note in every city which is different from that of another city. He hears in each street a new melody, and to him the sound of wind in the treetops of different forests gives a varying sound. In the Desire World, seemingly, sound proceeds from form. But in the music of Alasehir, it is different, for while each form occupies and obscures a certain space there, form is nonexistent when viewed from the standpoint of Alasehir.Where the form was, a transparent vacuous space is observable. From that empty void comes a sound which is the ‘keynote’ that creates and maintains the form whence it appears to come, as the almost invisible core of a gas-flame is the source of the light we perceive.”

Overview “While buckleheaded fascists continue to try and stop the progressive roiling of the essential ecstatic impulse that lurks in us all, Flaherty and Corsano negate their every thrust with gorgeous parries of sheer emotional intellect.” – Byron Coley Together, Chris Corsano and Paul Flaherty have re-written the concept of modern free jazz with their post-hardcore punk approach of euphoric togetherness. Ferocious, spontaneous, explosive, and aggressively lyrical, they’ve established their groundbreaking duo with loads of shows and a host of tremendous recordings. When tales of C. Spencer Yeh’s Burning Star Core project reached Corsano and Flaherty, the duo was eager to see him jam. Fortunately, fate brought them together at the DeStijl/Freedom From Festival, where Corsano and Flaherty were playing in the Dream/ Aktion Unit (with Thurston Moore) and Yeh was playing with Burning Star Core. His performance caught Corsano and Flaherty on fire, and Yeh’s temperature was raised (literally) when he Flaherty/Corsano/Yeh suddenly came down with the flu after his show. Fortunately for Yeh, Flaherty packed him in ice in the A Rock in the Snow festival hall basement, and a solid relationship was forged. Lives were saved. Jams ensued. The power File Under: Jazz trio of Flaherty/Corsano/Yeh was formed. CD: IPT 95 (P)

CD: RCL 17 (O) Imagine yourself riding on cells coasting through the body’s veins. The sound of the heart grows stronger, like a beating drum, as you’re pulled closer. Suddenly, you’re embraced by the giant, pulsating muscle and when you’re finally released back into the veins, you can hear its sound fading, but still growling with the same intensity it has had for all eternity. Jugularis is the soundtrack to this ride and, like your heart, is packaged in blood: the ultimate symbol of life and intensity. Recently Daniel Menche has embraced percussion-based sound to create music that manipulates the listener’s blood flow and intensifies the listening experience. Jugularis still contains a distinctly Menche sound, yet since it’s intensely rhythm-based, it’s extremely different from anything that he has created prior to this. Never before has Daniel Menche’s mantra been so appropriate – “If music is like blood, then make the speakers bleed.”

Overview Any band so bold as to call themselves The Deaths is asking for trouble, and since their inception they have found plenty of it. Surviving a near-fatal van rollover on tour, and still showing up on time to play the show that night with hospital bracelets on their wrists, The Deaths have earned their name. The band surprises virgin audiences that expect skulls and metal by performing harmonized pop, ghostly waltzes, and dusty instrumentals that linger like cigarette smoke from a departed lover.Their songs can be as cold as their frozen North Dakota roots, or sear your nerves with white-hot flashes of lazy brilliance. Just when you think you have figured them out, they overwhelm you with their own mix of Britpop and sublime Scottish folk, electrified on the altar of late sixties psychedelia. Choir Invisible is the first nationally available CD by The Deaths, originally a tour- and local-only release on GoJohnnyGo Records. This release has been re-mastered and expanded with new tracks and new digipak artwork.
Press Quotes “The Deaths could petition for a spot in the Elephant 6 collective … runs the gamut of sixties influences, from the obscure (Beau Brummels, Troggs) to the more omnipresent (Bowie) [but] the psychedelia never gets too far out of control that it can’t be wrapped up in a three-minute pop song.” – Austin Chronicle “If John Lennon made Plastic Ono Band without meeting Yoko, the result would have been akin to these minimalist psychedelic reactionaries who sing about places they’ve never been and experiences they’ve never had.” – Chuck Klosterman, Spin “The Deaths caress your ears with great songs and make you wanna dance. They are raved about back in the Twin Cities and are the ‘it’ band right now.” – Reader Weekly

CD: RCL 17 (O) Solo bassist C.J. Boyd combines the improvisational prowess of jazz, the grace of classical music, the punch of progressive rock, and a rhythmic edge culled from all over the world. Influenced by music from across the spectrum, he draws as much inspiration from Jimi Hendrix, Joao Gilberto, and Ludwig Van Beethoven as he does from fellow bassists Vic Wooten and Edgar Meyer. Produced and recorded by Sando Perri of Constellation Record’s Polmo Polpo, The Greatest Weight is bassist C.J. Boyd’s finest work. Two of the album’s five compositions clock in at over twenty minutes, with Boyd’s electric bass looping and layering into dense and highly listenable structures. Under Perri’s tasteful production, Boyd manually doubles and triples his bass lines in real time, with no sampling or electronics. He uses his limited sonic palette to his advantage: electric bass as minor orchestra, with harmonica as a hundred-year-old pump organ. The Greatest Weight is ambient, rhythmic, and surprisingly listenable.

Featured Artists John Lydon – vox Keith Levene – guitar, synth, drums Jah Wobble – bass, drums Richard Dudanski – drums Martin Atkins – drums David Humphrey – drums
Overview The second album by John Lydon’s post-Sex Pistols outing Public Image Ltd. was originally released in the UK in 1979 in a limited edition film canister-style metal box containing three 12” 45s. Some copies managed to float across the Atlantic into the hands of a fortunate few, making it a post-punk collectors’ holy grail. Unavailable for almost thirty years, now the Metal Box is back as an exact replica of the original, remastered for better sound than the 1979 vinyl! In Lydon’s own words: “Metal Box was hard work. First, Virgin weren’t very sure about the metal package, you know, cost, blah blah blah. So we offered to pay for some of it by reducing our advance from them. Obviously the idea of putting a record in a metal box was a bit unusual. The idea came from film canisters. We all thought video and film was the future. Besides, I’ve always collected vinyl and this was a really good way of stopping it getting damaged.”
Press Quotes “I don’t give a fuck about John Lydon ... still, I think he knows what he’s doing, and PIL is the proof … because Metal Box is one of the strongest records I’ve heard in years.” – Lester Bangs, 1980 “Summons up everything from the unpleasant portentousness of middle-period Jim Morrison to what sounds like the deranged Kaddish of a punk rabbi. This is not, in short, exactly a party record … the joke, of course, will be on me if fifteen years from now everything on the radio sounds like this. But it wouldn’t surprise me too much.” – Stereo Review, 1980

Overview “The quintessential American power pop band, Big Star remains one of the most mythic and influential cult acts in all of rock & roll. Originally led by the singing and songwriting duo of Alex Chilton and Chris Bell, the Memphis-based group fused the strongest elements of the British Invasion era – the melodic invention of The Beatles, the whiplash guitars of The Who, and the radiant harmonies of The Byrds – into a ramshackle but poignantly beautiful sound which recaptured the spirit of pop’s past even as it pointed the way toward the music’s future.” – All Music Guide Also known as Sister Lovers, Big Star’s legendary third album has been released and re-released countless times around the world with different track listings, different mixes, and different cover art. Overview “Big Star guitarist Chris Bell was one of the unsung heroes of American pop music; despite a life marked by tragedy and a career crippled by commercial indifference, the singer/songwriter’s slim body of recorded work proved massively influential on the generations of indie rockers who emerged in his wake … lyrically poignant and melodically stunning, this lone solo album is proof positive of his underappreciated pop mastery.” – All Music Guide Big Star guitarist Chris Bell’s remarkable single “I Am the Cosmos” was released in 1977 by New York label Car. After Bell’s passing, the legendary status of Big Star continued to grow, and eventually Bell’s unreleased demos were collected with the title I Am the Cosmos and released to unending praise in 1992. Now available for the first time on vinyl! 180-gram vinyl. Original artwork.

Arab On Radar’s breakthrough album on vinyl again for the first time in six years! With a screenprinted cover on heavy board, the first two hundred copies include a Soak poster. Powerful and cathartic, AOR represent a unique brand of psycho-neurological terrorism. Listeners have reported seizures, heart attacks, and heightened states of sexual arousal upon repeated use. Members went on to form Made in Mexico,The Chinese Stars, and Athletic Automaton. CD also available.
The landmark album on vinyl in a gatefold-sleeved deluxe new edition. First two hundred copies include a bonus Colossamite/White Tornado split 7” and Colossamite poster! Economy of Motion sounds like a mixtape gone awry, a meeting ground of hardcore, noise, and improvisation … like Black Flag vs. Derek Bailey. Colossamite is comprised of Deerhoof offshoot Gorge Trio teamed with vocalist Nick Sakes of Dazzling Killmen and Sicbay. CD also available.

File under Quintron! Flossie and The Unicorns sound like furry animals playing dance music on teeny-tiny guitars, eensyweensy drums, and itty-bitty synthesizers. So simple and perfect, it’s almost frightening.
