“Two years after his posthumous return, the (re)discovery of yet another astonishing expanse of the vast, secret continent that is Arthur Russell is most welcomed.” – LA Alternative Before disco and the transcendent echoes, Arthur Russell wanted to be a composer. His journey began in 1972 when he left Iowa to study Indian classical composition with Ali Akbar Khan in Northern California, and ended two years later in New York at the Manhattan School of Music. In that brief period, Russell met and worked with several musicians and poets who would guide his work throughout the remainder of the decade: Allen Ginsburg, Christian Wolff, Jackson MacLow, Rhys Chatham, Phillip Glass, Elodie Lauten, and Ernie Brooks. This 2XCD all-instrumental compilation includes the long out-of-print “‘Instrumentals’ Vol.2” and “Tower of Meaning,” with over forty-five minutes of unreleased material. 3XLP features triple gatefold deluxe packaging.

Overview Debut album from Brooklyn’s bubblegum punk sensations! Often compared to a vibrant mix of Jesus & Mary Chain and The Shangri-las, Tralala have been burning up the New York club scene since their inception a little over a year ago. Tralala formed back in 2003 when the members met in a biker bar tucked away on the back roads of Brooklyn. The last twelve months have been a blur of nonstop activity, with opening spots for Franz Ferdinand, Scissor Sisters, Holly Golightly, The Dirtbombs, and Brendan Benson as well as debauchery-filled tours with Ted Leo on the West Coast and Broadcast on the East Coast. Between it all, they have also filled New York clubs on their own and composed pop masterpieces that are available on their Audika Records debut Tralala. Tralala have garnered accolades from the finest of tastemakers with their live performances, girlgroup harmonies, and brilliant songwriting.
Press Quotes “The septet knows the pop game inside and out, having assembled a cabal of comely female vocalists and a trove of two-chord guitar riffs upon which their unsophisticated but damn catchy lyrics may prance.” – Pitchfork “The concept of Tralala is so no-brainer effective that marketing types should be smacking their foreheads in why-didn’t-I think-of-that frustration. Since Tralala really sounds like a handful of friends just out for kicks, and not some grand marketing strategy, the group is more than just another band with a gimmick. But Tralala was made for the stage, where the group’s playful decadence offers just a hint of biker-girl menace. That’s rock ‘n’ roll.” – Time Out NY

“The excited girls singing sixties girl group pop in the Brooklyn-based band Tralala bring to mind the classic lady-power moment in any romantic comedy worth its salt: four attractive women … in goofy patterned pajamas belting into various faux-microphones – a hairbrush, a carrot, a banana, and a remote control. And in true romantic comedy fashion, this gaggle of girls is singing all about what ails them: boys.” – Spin “When I got this CD, I went to volleyball an hour early so I could sit in the parking lot and listen to this album first. I didn’t want to play that night. I just wanted to sit in the car draining the battery while listening to one of the best albums heard all year.” – Joel Edelman, Agouti Music

Overview A three-track holiday hits EP! Four girls, three boys, and even less chords, Tralala serve only two purposes: to have a good time, and to spread it to the masses. Part space-rock, part shoegaze, and thoroughly otherworldly, Sciflyer crafts layers of droning noise liquid enough to drown in. This EP ends up as a compendium of two “lost singles” (and their B-sides) that the band recorded during a two-year pseudo-hiatus in drummer limbo.
Written and recorded between 1986 and 1989, these songs were originally intended for release on an LP for London Records – a project that, sadly, never materialized. The collection was released on the legendary Subway Organization, and is chock full of tracks from the authentic C86 era.

A part of the shoegaze movement in Japan, Hartfield’s sound combines dreamy melodies, noisy guitars, and breathy, cute male/female vocals. Mixed by Scott Cortez of Astrobrite. Two tracks are exclusive to the U.S. version.

Overview Fred Thomas has been touring across America in various forms for over a decade. Getting a foothold on his sense of punk in Ypsilanti,Thomas started in the noisy, awkward band Chore while creating his tape label, which grew into Westside Audio. There are also rumors and bootlegs of an Andrew WK collaboration, a hip-hop demo, under the name Coffinz. In later years,Thomas went on to work with well-loved emo bands Lovesick, His Name Is Alive, and Saturday Looks Good To Me, for which he conducted and wrote all music. From now on,Thomas has decided he will only release records under his own name, and this is his official debut.

As an artistic co-op, all of their bands, friends, and family have a say in what the label is and what it can be.This is a family, and everyone pitches in. Collaborations are the norm, be it through artwork, side projects, guest appearances, production, or helping each other move.
Overview Rabbit Ears is the new project from Murder City Devils front man Spencer Moody (Dead Low Tide, Smoke and Smoke, Triumph of Lethargy Skinned Alive to Death). Combining contemporary R&B songwriting with punk roots, Moody and drummer Jeff MacIsaac (Aveo, Barsuk Records) have a four-song EP prepared just for you! Friends since eighth grade debate camp, Moody and MacIsaac have played music together for years. Their combined love for classic rockers Cream and Jimi Hendrix soon erupted into their punk years, and their friendship and musical progression has come full circle in this stripped-down vocalsand-electric-drums project.

Overview A Gun Called Tension and Triumph of Lethargy Skinned Alive to Death’s split 7” is a tribute to Leonard Cohen. A Gun Called Tension have re-imagined “There is a War,” from 1974’s New Skin for the Old Ceremony, as a dub anthem, while Triumph of Lethargy have chosen “Diamonds in the Mine” from the 1971 album Songs of Love and Hate. These songs (in their original form) were not chosen as singles, and have not been included on any “best of” packages or previous tribute albums. They are simply songs preformed by and for Leonard Cohen fans.

Featured Artists Mark Janka – vocals, guitar, saw, baritone guitar, harmonica, plastic tube Tim Joyce – vocals, guitars, Korg keys, pump organ, percussion, electric ukulele, harmonica, harmonium, accordion, banjo, celeste, xylophone, piano Greg Thomas – drums, saw, baritone guitar, percussion, melodica Mitch Nelson – French horn Barry Phipps – recording engineer, tape delay Janet Schiff – cello
Overview Since 1998, The Lesser Birds of Paradise have evolved from charming folk-pop to a more ambitious, textured craft. Over the last few years, their sound has been refined to its most organic elements, and their appeal has developed beyond the Chicago indie rock scene. Space Between, the trio’s third album, is their strongest and most focused work yet. The Lesser Birds’ subtle experiments and arrangements, which acted as flourishes on previous releases, developed into integral muscle on the mesmeric Space Between. With emphasis on every detail, Space Between opens up secret passageways of sound in which melodies aren’t so much played as naturally grown; where single notes, pump organs, xylophones, muted drums, and echoing voices layer in a warm, seductive embrace. Coupled with tapestries of American Gothic narratives, sly humor, animal characters, and Robert Creeley-cumCharles Olson poetics, The Lesser Birds of Paradise have created a record of lasting impression and importance, and emerge as one of the more original bands today.
Press Quotes “A rolling landscape of lap steels, musical saws, and ukuleles that creates a whimsical feeling; the perfect complement to the somber vocal stylings of singer Mark Janka … records like this only come along a few times a year. Buy it, don’t burn it.” – Rockpile “So gorgeous it’s almost toxic, with layers of trilling acoustic guitar and strings shimmering around Mark Janka’s breathy, drony singing.” – Chicago Reader “It’s the kind of music you want to paper your apartment with, etching wistful moods and expansive backdrops from floor to ceiling … Lesser Birds of Paradise have captured something simply, gorgeously epic.” – Splendid

Featured Artists Adrian Orange – acoustic & electric guitars, bass, drums, piano, organ, vocals, melodica, assorted percussion
Overview Thanksgiving’s eleventh release, Bitches Is Lord is a revelation of the highest order as Adrian Orange sets out to capture the energy, presence, and full-bodied force of a Thanksgiving live performance. Features more of the meaningful songs that Orange does so well, but this time around things just sound fierce. Hints of Johnny Cash and Crazy Horse-era Neil Young are touchstones. Minimal dirges and cloaked political blues butt up against triumphantly colorful anthems. Bitches Is Lord lyrically drafts propositions for a new era of humanity while exploring the painful beauty of what it is to be human. This is, notably, the first Thanksgiving album completely performed, recorded, mixed, and produced by Adrian Orange himself. Drums smack with raw intensity, and guitars curl and bounce around Orange’s deep, older-than-his-age voice, sounding out cries, laments, and triumphs unto the dawn of this troubled world.
Press Quotes “Phil Elverum-approved nineteen-year-old troubadour Adrian Orange (a.k.a. Thanksgiving) has long played the precocious ‘gifted kid’ of the Northwestern nature-boy set, pumping out lo-fi tunes that reached for the sublime heights of the Microphones and Little Wings while often fluttering just below pale imitation. On his triple-LP opus Thanksgiving, however, all bets are off. Obviously tour-refined, Orange has summoned an effortless crop of melodies and, moreover, an adult’s surefootedness to buoy his journeyman musings.” – CMJ “Orange is capable of making mopey, indie folk-pop that’s downright fucking transcendent.” – Portland Mercury “Adrian Orange, the person behind the music of Thanksgiving, is one young and prolific artist. I dare you to look up his discography and not be amazed – all of this work done by the age of nineteen … he has a gift for making great three-minute rock songs that break the mold.” – Big Yawn
Selling Points • Released on the heels of the sold-out Thanksgiving triple LP • Adrian Orange is constantly touring, and has shared the stage with Sleater-Kinney, Devendra Banhart, and more • Orange has contributed to compilations for Kill Rock Stars, States Rights Records, Kelp Monthly, UF Records, and Marriage Records • Promotion handled by Force Field PR

Overview I don’t know what time it is in Argentina right now, but for Los Natas it must be some time in the mid-seventies because the gods of Buenos Aries burnout rock are back doing what they do best – and that means fuzzed-out psychedelic rock jams that rival the best work Black Sabbath ever did! After five years of dabbling in the more experimental side of the psych rock genre, the boys are back with a proper follow-up to 2001’s Corsario Negro. Once again produced by heavy hitter Billy Anderson (Melvins, Neurosis) at the luxurious Abasto Studios and recorded on vintage equipment straight to 2” tape, the group has created an instant classic of a new genre that can only be described as “Latin heavy psych.” This means a whole new round of globetrotting for Los Natas, with a summer tour booked in South America, European dates through the fall, and a U.S. tour early next year centered around SXSW 2007.
Press Quotes “What has six legs, three heads, sings in Spanish, and sounds like a herd of dinosaurs marching across a pre-historic Patagonian beach? Why, it must be Argentina’s phenomenal Los Natas, whose earth-shaking brand of doom metal ranks with the best yet heard in this new millennium.” – All Music Guide “While being from Argentina certainly keeps Los Natas from getting the attention they deserve, it has certainly helped them to craft a sound that is all their own … hopefully with this disc, the guys will get the attention they really deserve and turn more of us gringos on to what we’ve been missing for the past three albums.” – Bully “Along with a little change in their name, the Argentinean masters of trippy heaviness decided to experiment with their sound as well. While the successful recipe of writing brilliant sonic journeys would lead them to another psychedelic masterpiece … Los Natas went for the hard route instead.” – Monolith

Overview Initiating a new video activism series on Illegal Art, On the Edge is a documentary covering the brutal murders of over 400 poor young women in the border town of Ciudad Juarez, Mexico – murders that have been repeatedly ignored and unresolved by the police and government over the last thirteen years despite the efforts of family members and activists to obtain justice for the victims. Rather than provide an easy, murder-mystery-style solution to the crimes, the film sets out to explain the social, cultural, and economic factors that have created a situation where these killings can continue, and go unpunished. In addition to explaining the circumstances, On the Edge situates the Juarez killings in the context of wider political and economic trends, showing the audience that this is not just an isolated phenomenon in one far-off city, but a glimpse at a nightmarish future for much of the world unless something is done to prevent it.
Press Quotes “It’s refreshing to see a film from someone who has great politics and is also interested in making it visually appealing.” – San Diego Independent Media Center “A decent selection of experiments in abstract signal processing that take the music so far from its source material as to be unrecognizable…” – The Wire

Overview “This first-generation UK punk band made sparse tunes that erupted in combustible snippets on its twentyone-track debut album.” – Rolling Stone Originally released on Harvest in 1977, Pink Flag is perhaps the most original debut album to come out of the first wave of British punk. Exhibiting severe art school damage, Wire careens at breakneck speed through twenty-one songs in thirty-six minutes to create an album that has influenced bands for nearly thirty years. Original artwork. 180-gram audiophile vinyl.

Overview “1978’s great leap into even artier weirdness and Brian Eno-inspired ambient experiments.” – Pitchfork With its Eno-esque synth textures, Chairs Missing has often been cited as the evolutionary link between punk and post-punk. In general, the lyrics are darker than those on Pink Flag, even morbid at times; images of cold, drowning, pain, and suicide haunt the record, and the title itself is a reference to mental instability. Originally released in 1978 and now available for the first time on 180-gram audiophile vinyl. Original artwork.

Synth moves to the forefront on this third album from Wire, along with melodies that help humanize the electronic textures. Named for the number of gigs they had played to that point, 154 shows how far this band had come in three years. Original artwork. First time on 180-gram audiophile vinyl.

Featured Artists Josh Frederick – vocals Dave Gossett – guitar Matt Powell – drums Shawn Preston – bass Jason Frederick – guitar
Overview Five guys who had similar taste in music and similar ideas about politics, religion, and life created Mourningstar in 2002.The band’s unconventional style of melodic punk and hardcore comes from their wide array of musical influences, from Strung Out and The Misfits to The Smiths and U2. In the summer of 2003, Mourningstar recorded Disrato, released by Falcom Records in August 2004. Shortly after its release, they found themselves on the road nonstop, including three East Coast tours and dates on the 2005 Vans Warped Tour. In late 2005, Mourningstar signed with New School Records and booked a studio session with producer Matt Goldman (Underoath, The Chariot, Cartel, Copeland) to get their new full-length tracked. With the excitement of joining the New School roster, the band has agreed to take it full time and tour as much as possible too get the exposure they need to catch the eyes of punk rock fans everywhere. The Antioch is an honest elucidation of Mourningstar’s views on modern society, religion, politics, economics, love, and life. The music is aggressive, yet melodic, while the lyrics are delivered with angst and packed with social discontent. The band’s approach is neither sugarcoated nor overproduced, and engineer/producer Matt Goldman was able to capture their exact sound. So, if you’re looking for an unconventional brand of melodic punk/hardcore, Mourningstar is the band for you!
Press Quotes “Mourningstar may just be the best punk band you’ve never heard.” – PastePunk.com “Refreshingly original-sounding! I’d be hard-pressed to compare this band to any others out there (remember, that’s a good thing). Decidedly positive and impressively rockin’, this five-piece would appeal to those who enjoy hardcore, punk, emo, and even nu-metal. Most of all, it’s for music fans fed up with all those cookie-cutter bands.” – Skratch

Overview “One of the most underrated bands in Austin, Nervous Exits are bearing down. With a baby face fronting and blues backing, the Exits walk the thin line between garage and punk with an electric slide and a wink.” – Austin Chronicle Nervous Exits are a rock ‘n’ roll quintet from Austin who just played their first official SXSW showcase in 2006. A mutual love of punk and garage rock brought the band together as friends in their late teens. They went their separate ways for a few years, then coincidentally ended up in together again. This time around, a mutual love for the MC5, Captain Beefheart, and other adventurous sounds of the sixties and seventies inspired the guys to start a band. For the last two and a half years, the band has been screeching and howling across Texas, including one West Coast tour and three studio sessions. This is their first release, and they are already working on their second record.

Overview “An ambitious anthology of music from African films of many styles, featuring a variety of material that stretches as deep as the subject matter. The sound quality is crisp and impeccable, and the stylistic breadth is quite wide … the far-reaching compositions and melodies really make this an interesting listen.” – Fenn Music The first volume of the AfricaVision series, devoted to the cinema of Western Africa, presents music from French-speaking African films and films about French-speaking Africa. Includes nineteen titles composed by famous musicians such as pianist Ray Lema, kora player Lamine Konté, Mokhtar Samba, So Kalmery, and more. According to one of the series’ curators, Catherine Ruelle, the anthology “revives an important part of the continent’s musical heritage, valorizing the work of musicians who have been completely forgotten … [and who] all played a major role in laying the foundations of what we now know as ‘African music.’”

Featured Artists Chris Bear – vocals, drums Jeff Knutsen – synths Chris Taylor – bass
Overview Fast Fourier is a soothing equation buried deep in the future of static rock ‘n’ roll; a fiberoptic pop soundscape for music lovers who thirst for the unique, creating layers of endearing melodies that wouldn’t be out of place atop a daydream. Fast Fourier makes reality seem fuzzy enough to just get past the peripheral and onto the dance floor. At times smooth and delaying, at others jagged and Pollyanna-ish, they consistently spit out lullabies infected with a clear-cut catchiness you’ll be smitten with for weeks. Singer/drummer Chris Bear (Grizzly Bear) delivers syrupy-sweet vocals enveloped in his icy beats while Jeff Knutsen and Chris Taylor (Grizzly Bear) back their boy up with a heaping helping of soured-moog crunch and bass guitar bohemia. The band meets comfortably within the confines of its debut full-length Tomorrow,Tomorrow. Each track detonates a wide range of melodramatic intensity; the opener “Wonderlove” explores confusion in the world of unrequited lust, while a track like “Fluorescent Rain” drips with a downright heavenly glide. From its inception as a high-energy experimental trio, Fast Fourier has played live sets ranging from kaleidoscopic grunge to rapid-fire, no-wave punk. The line between the predetermined and the spontaneous is wholly washed away in the fluidity of their show. The band began performing approximately two and a half years ago, crashing and inspiring parties throughout greater New York and its surrounding boroughs. Tomorrow,Tomorrow stands as a break in rock history, successfully capturing Fast Fourier’s adventurous spirit and raw live sound. This is seventies AM radio pop for the twenty-first century. Get down on it.
Press Quotes “Fast Fourier, set to release an album this spring, offer … beguiling and gritty mixtures of electronics and urgent fuzzed-out guitars à la The Black Keys.” – Delusions of Adequacy “Instead of gnarled, matted brown fur and sharp claws, Grizzly Bear’s music brings to mind another kind of hulking, sienna figure: a monk, clad in rough-hewed, belted habit … the arrangements are simple and faraway-sounding, as soft harmonious voices echo through singular guitars and spare strings.” – Spin

Beautiful and disturbing, Weird Feelings is the first full-length to feature the band’s current and long-standing trio lineup of Sandy Ewen (guitar/vocals), Nick Hennies (drums/vocals), and Aaron Russell (guitar). Weird Feelings is a completely singular and uncompromising take on pop music, showcasing the band’s unique knack for subtlety and inventiveness. It is a defining statement from a band firmly committed to developing their own distinct approach, blurring and redefining the boundaries of both pop and experimental music.
Press Quotes “It took all of thirty seconds for The Weird Weeds’ new EP to fully blow my mind … there’s nothing half-assed or phoned-in about this; it’s solid, steady, stable music that can still get loose without sounding loose because it understands the subtle balance of hard work vis-avis hyper-creativity.” – Portland Mercury “A shimmering, soft bed of hazy acoustic guitars, heartfelt vocal harmonies, and strangely affecting tunes that may pass by in an instant but linger in the soft air for a good while afterwards.” – Foxy Digitalis “Lusciously captivating … weird … and gorgeous.” – Drowned in Sound

Grails Black Tar Prophecies Vols. 1, 2, & 3 File Under: Alt Rock CD: IPT 105 (P) NOT AVAILABLE IN CANADA
Featured Artists Zak Riles – six- & twelve-string acoustic guitars Emil Amos – tapes, drums, various guitars, bouzouki, melodica, vibes William Slater – bass, piano, organ, Rhodes, vocal Alex Hall – samples, various guitars, alto saxophone
Overview At the start of 2005, Grails returned to the U.S. from a month-long European tour. Stepping off the plane, most of the band walked in one direction and the violinist strayed off in another. It ended up being the last time most anyone would see or talk to him again. A bandmate of five years had vanished, existing thereafter only in the form of vague rumors. As the varied reports of brief encounters and sightings grew stranger and darker, the band started a series of recordings called Black Tar Prophecies. The remaining members had particular dissatisfactions with how the band had been grouped into the innocuous, contemporary post-rock movement. This frustration, combined with newly liberated instrumental roles, introduced new possibilities for their sound. In this way, the collected Black Tar Prophecies ends up being a more idiosyncratic mission statement for future Grails recordings, revealing their fondness for the groundfloor sixties and seventies experimental artists who saw music as a process of discovery as opposed to the pre-conceived, pre-parametered, commodified sport that underground music has become. A parallel is now forming between Grails and old-school experimental bands like Faust who, rejecting their past, started over from the beginning to build new languages in music. Black Tar Prophecies is Grails’ third full-length recording (and their first since leaving Neurosis label Neurot). Seven of the nine tracks were released in small, highly sought-after pressings of 12” vinyl on two European labels. Important is now proud to release Black Tar Prophecies in its complete form, including two tracks not available on the vinyl releases.
Press Quotes “Words like breathtaking, introspective, graceful, and powerful all describe their music aptly. It’s for people who like their music to take them places, even within themselves, that they hadn’t dared before. It’s music to help you realize the beauty of a broken world around you.” – Indieworkshop “I still hear a band of ragtag improvisers, engaged in a heavy channeling of Americana that fuses Henry Flynt or Tony Conrad with the smoldering remains of Black Sabbath.Who can’t dig that?” – Dusted
Selling Points • First Grails dates on the East Coast in Fall 2006 to support this release • Grails drummer Emil Amos recently played in the West Coast live debut of Jandek; more performances may be scheduled • Recent completion of second European tour included performances with Mogwai, Wolf Eyes, Akron/Family, Deerhoof, and Piano Magic • Grails’ first two full-lengths were released by Neurot, run by the members of Neurosis • Grails recently released two highly sought-after vinyl-only European 12”s, including a split with Red Sparowes • Full press mailing by Important Records • Ads will run in The Wire, Signal To Noise, Arthur, and CMJ

Overview “Yellow Swans come on like The Dead C’s most non-rock recordings … trying to claw out of a grotto stacked with automated and unruly Wasp synths.” – The Wire This CD contains some of the first recordings of Tom Carter’s circuit bending. Individual attributes of Gabe Saloman’s guitar roar, Carter’s ebow laptop whirl, and Robert Horton’s clanky homemades merge into the mud stew. Driving the swirl are samples of boogie-woogie piano, riffs from the session, and the pounding drums of guests Michael Donnelly and Doug “Moonshine” Jin. How did these recordings happen? During the torrential rains of December 2005, caused by global warming, Horton invited Carter, Mindel, Pete Swanson (Yellow Swans), and Glenn Donaldson up the hill to his home in El Cerrito for food, drink, and music-making (although Donaldson couldn’t make it). After the session, Horton cut up, manipulated, and reconstructed the recordings with help from Swanson and Carter. The following week, when Swanson came over to overdub his sounds, Horton Mudsuckers found an article on mudsuckers in the Berkeley Daily Planet. The headline was “Mudsuckers may be ugly, Mudsuckers but they have value.” A band was born. Minazo Vol. 2 is Merzbow’s tribute to the beloved male elephant seal that lived life in captivity at a Tokyo aquarium. Masami Akita often visited the seal at the aquarium, and was allowed to access the animal behind the scenes. Minazo was the only male elephant seal in Japan, and became very popular through several TV appearances. He was forced to perform various stunts before audiences at each mealtime. This hard work made him exhausted, and might have caused his early death. Minazo died in October 2005 at eleven years old, still young for an elephant seal whose life expectancy is twenty years on average.

Overview “That rare bird of a guitarist who keeps things melodic enough for the novice and just unpredictable enough for the seasoned progressive folk fan. He keeps things moving at such a human pace that, like a good novel, it’s impossible not to try and fit another chapter in before going to bed.” – All Music Guide Solo guitarist Sean Smith’s second album is an exploration of his unique voice on the instrument. Born in quaint Pacific Grove, CA, the surrounding areas of the Pacific Coast Highway are where Smith found his first influence to create musical landscapes that leave the average listener speechless. He chooses to let his acoustic guitar do the talking – and speak it does, in a complex manner and with psychedelic leanings not unlike the great eccentric John Fahey. Since the 2005 release of his debut self-titled disc, Smith has played frequently to growing audiences in the San Francisco area, sharing stages with Bonnie “Prince” Billy, Six Organs of Admittance, Harris Newman, Penelope Houston, Jack Rose, Marissa Nadler, Bart Davenport, and Matt Valentine in addition to touring with famed Cul De Sac guitarist Glenn Jones.
Selling Points • Tour-only vinyl version of this CD released in late May is limited to 500 copies • Smith is currently producing the comp Berkeley Guitarists for revered label Tompkins Square Records, which is slated for release in August 2006. Overview “Flaherty is a fabulous screamer and wailer, an inferno of sound, his sax the tool to put the world back on the right track one ruptured eardrum at a time.” – All Music Guide
Paul Flaherty Whirl of Nothingness File Under: Jazz CD: FVR 43 (M)
Saxophonist Paul Flaherty is New England’s purveyor of the ecstatic jazz pulse. Until 2001, Flaherty had been viewed as a shadow on the fringe of underground jazz; for twenty years he remained exclusively in the great Northeast and recorded over a dozen incendiary group albums. Since forming the explosive, hyper-acclaimed duo with drummer Chris Corsano (Six Organs of Admittance, Sunburned Hand of the Man) five years ago, Flaherty’s notoriety has risen in tandem with noted collaborations Dream/Aktion Unit (with Jim O’Rourke and Thurston Moore) and Cold Bleak Heat (with Greg Kelley and No Neck Blues Band’s Matt Heyner). Whirl of Nothingness, Flaherty’s second solo album, features eight pieces steeped in the theme of loss channeled through blasting improvisations that showcase his fabulous wailing and inferno of sound to stark bluesy melodies. In the slim canon of solo horn records, Whirl of Nothingness stands triumphantly strong and wholly distinct.

Cat Scientist has been moving bodies in Austin’s clubs for nearly three years with their infectious and quirky dance-pop.With members that have played in bands like Poison 13, Brown Whornet, Knife in the Water, The Horsies, and Meat Purveyors, it is no surprise that Cat Scientist’s music draws on many forms and synthesizes them into what can only be described as poppy bliss. Their music also draws on varied subjects lyrically, adding a quirky ingredient to their recipe. With subject matter that ranges from saving kittens from terrorist attacks to being stuck in traffic at I-35 and Riverside Drive, the overall effect is as equally reminiscent of the Talking Heads as it is of Ween. Delivered by the duet of Ray Craig and Brant Bingamon, the result is nothing short of brilliance.

Overview “Their no-frills approach has an unmistakable ferocity and their recordings are almost unbelievably tight. With drum sounds that seem like they are lifted straight from Quicksand’s Manic Compression, but with a more indie rock-infused approach – think Giant’s Chair or even older Jawbox.” – Basement Life Here’s where you pay attention – on Wolves, the fourth full-length from Traindodge, they’ve given all fans of rock reason to celebrate. Wolves fucking smokes! Slimmed-down to their original three-piece size, Traindodge is somehow even more of an awe-inspiring beast. Going ten years strong, the band has again created something lasting and real, while of course maintaining their trademark Bonham/ John Paul Jones meets aggressive Midwest wall-of-sound indie rock. However, on Wolves, we find Traindodge leaning heavier on the synths than ever before, giving the mix a fresh, air-conditioned vibe. They can no longer hide their secret love of eighties prog/pop – Genesis, King Crimson, Peter Traindodge Gabriel, Journey, Steely Dan, Talking Heads, Tangerine Dream – and if you love it, why fight it? Wolves Prospective record reviewers should familiarize themselves with said bands before attempting to File Under: Alt Rock properly review this release. Overview “The bass pops and winds along like a reverberating serpent, dragging us through a terrifying musical space before bashing us with raucous guitars and cutting us off abruptly with a segue to the next track. This is just one chapter in a unique venture.” – Splendid Traindodge began writing, recording, and touring in 1996, bringing their volatile brand of raucous noise and discombobulated prose to the masses. Now, the power trio brings back their second album, On a Lake of Dead Trees, formerly out of print and now re-released with two extra tracks. Ambient, heavy, and melodic – never has a three-piece sounded so huge.

Overview A best of?! Originally released in 1999, Greatest Hits?! features twenty-two songs picked by the fans and remixed by the band, and includes a full-color sixteen-page booklet with rare photos illustrating the immense history of ALL. When The Decendents’ Milo Aukerman went to college, ALL was born. Rather than quietly lay down their tools and fade into legend, Bill Stevenson, Stephen Egerton, and Karl Alvarez formed an offshoot band called ALL.The band first enlisted singer Dave Smalley, then Scott Reynolds, and finally current singer Chad Price. Although ALL is mostly made up of members of the Descendents, and most of the songs are written by people in both bands, few can deny that ALL has its own distinct sound while still letting the Descendents bleed through.
Press Quotes “If ever there was a long-overdue compilation, this is it. As a singles band, ALL is one of the greats, with a long string of some of the best pop-punk tunes since, well, The Descendents … the band’s finest moments, a sonic resume impressive by anyone’s standards, are finally collected and packaged in an easily accessible album.” – Aversion “Manic energy and highly melodic thrash tunes recall Hüsker Dü in their heyday. Modern rockers will ignore this industrial-strength punkola at their own risk.” – Billboard “This Descendents offshoot finds ALL spouting off about the ALL philosophy, featuring punk-pop odes to sexual abstinence [and] heartbreak … contains enough pop hooks to win over the most jaded listener.” – All Music Guide “ALL and its predecessor, The Descendents, had been playing the same kind of tuneful, high-powered punk-pop since 1978, recording on independent labels and building a cult-size following … at Irving Plaza, it packed thirty-one songs into a seventy-five-minute set, driven by Stephen Egerton’s fast-strummed power chords, Karl Alvarez’s brisk bass lines, and Bill Stevenson’s crisply vociferous drumming … the set included bright, concise songs echoing the Ramones; longer-lined tunes akin to early Beatles; dissonant bursts of hardcore, muscular folk-rock; [and] even a few heavy-metal riffs, using the formulas of classic three-minute pop to keep everything catchy.” – NY Times
Selling Points • Previously in The Descendants, ALL members have been around longer than most “pop punk” musicians have been alive! • Back catalog on Cruz, Epitaph, and Interscope • ALL have made multiple appearances on the Warped Tour, been included on high-profile compilations, and toured the U.S. extensively
