Overview Dr. Dog has been creating music in various incarnations in their hometown of Philadelphia for nearly four years now, starting with their humble first release The Psychedelic Swamp, a concept album realized in the damp ruin of a flooded basement, through to the recently recorded Easy Beat, which finds the band much more lyrically and musically complex. Most recently, the band has compiled Takers and Leavers, a dramatic step up in terms of production and fidelity, and a grand preview to the LP in stores early 2007. Although Dr. Dog has as many as twenty honorary “members” who have assisted in various capacities throughout the years, the core of the collective consists of five musicians all from various musical backgrounds. Imagine the Beach Boys, The Beatles, Tom Waits, David Bowie, and Neil Young as acknowledged influences that have been interpreted through the eyes of Pavement, Palace Brothers, R. Stevie Moore, or Roy Wood. Still with us?
Press Quotes “Philadelphia’s psychedelic tradition extends from Bardo Pond to Sun Ra, and Dr. Dog add a swampy impermeability and White Album fixation to that signature sound.” – Spin “Sure to attract a rabid cult of indie rock fans.” – New York Times “Last year was a pretty good one for Philadelphia’s Dr. Dog: an opening slot on two My Morning Jacket tours and a glowing profile in the New York Times … with a mix of Philly blue-eyed soul harmonies, Supertramp-strength hooks, and Neutral Milk Hotel’s sense of balance, Easy Beat bears the mark of genius–it all sounds effortless.” – Time Out New York ”Guaranteed to charm indie-poppers and graying hippies alike.” – Magnet “Lush Pet Sounds-y production made with a budget and some intangibles that bring it more in line with early Elliott Smith.” – CMJ
Selling Points • Highly anticipated follow up to 2005’s Easy Beat, which made Dr. Dog one of the year’s biggest buzz bands with critical acclaim from NPR, New York Times, Rolling Stone, Alternative Press, Spin, Mojo, NME, CMJ, and Village Voice • Music video shown repeatedly on MTV2 show Subterranean • Previous album listed in 2005 Top 10 lists in Emusic,Village Voice, and CMJ NMM • Dr. Dog, a touring machine, has played with Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, Architecture in Helsinki, My Morning Jacket, The Strokes, Sun Volt, Of Montreal, The Spinto Band, New Pornographers, and Sound Team • Promotion by Big Hassle PR (Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, Metric, Sound Team) • Ads will run in Pitchfork, Magnet, DIW, and Philadelphia City Paper; regional advertising along tour routes

Featured Artists Shai Halperin – guitar, vocals Dave Wayne Daniels – bass Jeff Van Newkirk – guitar, vocals Sir Kyle Lloyd – drums Adam Granduciel – guitar, keyboards Doug Kirby (National Eye) – piano
Overview Shai Halperin first introduced The Capitol Years to the music world in July 2001 with his homemade full-length release Meet Yr Acres (Full Frame/Poor Poor Records). Urged to leave the bedroom and share his music with a live audience, Halperin recruited Dave Wayne Daniels, Jeff Van Newkirk, and Sir Kyle Lloyd on bass, guitar, and drums, respectively. With collective backgrounds in noiserock as well as Beatles-esque pop, this full-band incarnation of The Capitol Years immediately generated a buzz in Philadelphia’s growing music scene. Continued touring and television appearances, as well as a handpicked opening slot for The Pixies’ first show in twelve years, have helped generate a significant buzz. Dance Away the Terror is perhaps the most realized collection of songs the band has ever recorded. This new album is a return to the home studio, fully encapsulating both the lo-fi studio nerds and the roaring, high-flying, and harmonizing rock ‘n’ roll band.
Press Quotes “The quartet kicks here are a big leap in thrills: a dash of Beck in Halperin’s voice and hooks, the twin-guitar grind of the Strokes. The six songs were cut in a week. The pleasure lasts much longer.” – David Fricke, Rolling Stone “The riff-driven sound of a loose-limbed rock band taking the stage by storm in a strange town after several stiff drinks with the locals. Honking chords and opaque mod-rock lyrics … are what this very raw–and so very rock ‘n’ roll–affair is all about.” – Magnet “If Beck had infiltrated The Beatles’ camp during the Abbey Road sessions, the result might have sounded like this worthy … product of Philadelphia’s minor indie-rock resurgence.” – CMJ “A cohesive blend of intelligent sixties rock and power pop that sounds like an extension of New Pornographer A.C. Newman’s Slow Wonder as played by Cheap Trick.” – All Music Guide
Selling Points • The Capitol Years are media darlings and have received glowing reviews from Rolling Stone, Magnet, Pitchfork, CMJ, All Music Guide, Entertainment Weekly, and more • In 2004, The Capitol Years spent one week as the house band on Last Call with Carson Daly • National touring in Fall/Winter 2006 and Winter/Spring 2007 • The Capitol Years were the first band to open for the Pixies when the band reunited • Promotion by Magnum PR (Gnarls Barkley, Art Brut, The Streets) • College radio promotion by AAM • Ads will run in Pitchfork, Magnet, DIW, Philadelphia City Paper, and more

Overview The debut release from Portland’s Holocene Music label is a unique collaboration in which a selection of the city’s most talented electronic musicians were asked to reinterpret the music of their favorite Portland bands. The result is a post-millennial blend of electropunk, indie rock, and outsider folk, digitally spliced and mutated to form a cohesive album of genre-screwed electronic music.
Press Quotes “★ ★ ★ ★ Who’s On It? In terms of Portland’s indie rock and digipop, who isn’t? A solid survey of genre spasms centered on ‘post-everything’ warehouse venue Holocene. Any Good? Indubitably. Percussive and persuasive, these recontexturalized collaborations are a real serious showcase.” – URB “The Portland, Oregon club Holocene hosts the latest and hottest in indie and electronic music, so it’s only fitting that the brains behind the club have decided to start their own record label specializing in the latest and hottest in indie and electronic music.” – Pitchfork “Title zaniness aside, the disc is a real solid listen. Stumptown indie faves (who you might’ve read about) like The Blow and Y.A.C.H.T. get remixed with additional bleeps and thumps and Casio-tones courtesy of their friends and neighbors, and the whole thing captures the digi-DIY, northwestern bedroom beat spirit Holocene strives to cultivate.” – The Fader

The Centre Will Hold captures this unique fusion with the kind of crackling, raw energy that has made their live shows legendary, resulting in a confident opening statement with soul and style to spare.
Press Quotes “There is a lineage in Portland, but young women have always sought out role models that appeal to them, and there are girls plunking on guitars all over the world. And you can bet they will show up at the Swan Island show.” – Corin Tucker, Sleater-Kinney “[Like] Heart crashing an orgy between the B-52’s and Black Sabbath.” – Willamette Week “[Swan Island] mixes dark, jangly melodies and striking guitar sounds, creating a sonic place to dance the apocalypse away.” – San Francisco Bay Guardian

Featured Artists Joey Ficklin – trombone, vocals Bryan Nelson – guitar, drums, vocals Aaron Seibert – drums Jeffrey Swanson – drums, electronics, samples, vocals Mote – guitar, electronics, samples Kevin Stack – guitar, vocals Win Wallace – bass
Overview “The new record is primarily about fire,” frontman Joey Ficklin answered in response to a question from the Austin Chronicle’s Chris Gray during a pre-SXSW 2005 interview. Ficklin couldn’t have known how right he was.Well into the recording of Thrilller, the building housing their rehearsal space, as well as Austin’s Sweatbox Studio, fell victim to that most feared of the elements. In an after-dark rescue mission beyond the police tape, complete with lookouts and secret signals, the master tapes of Thrilller were miraculously found in perfect condition. While not necessarily about fire in subject matter, Thrilller is a towering inferno in spirit. With complex riffs, layered horns, their signature double drum attack, and effected vocals, Gorch Fock have created their most intense and focused album to date. With this third offering, the band reflects the length of time they’ve been working together with tighter, more defined compositions and a unique pop sensibility wherein hooks develop from the layered mayhem.
Press Quotes “A refreshing blast for any hard rock fan.” – Time Out New York “Rude lyrics and rowdy but structured post-punk noise, with thrashing guitars and horns.” – New York Times
Selling Point • Will tour the West Coast in September 2006; extensive touring in October–November 2006 with more touring in 2007 • Last album had significant college radio charting in all regions of the country, including being a Top 5 album at WRBB Boston for April 2005 & #49 in their Best of 2005 chart • Have shared the stage with NoMeansNo, Mono, Alice Donut, Helios Creed, Fantomas, Black Dice, Animal Collective, Polysics, Melt Banana, and more • Played SXSW 2003–2006, with two official showcases in 2005; also played CMJ 2005 • Included on Crustacean’s upcoming Killdozer tribute with Season to Risk and more • Service to college & community radio stations • Service to national & regional music press as well as webzines and new media • Ads will run in Punk Planet, Copper Press, Razorcake, Arthur, Pop Culture Press, Magnet, CMJ, and more

Featured Artists Monty Carlo – vocals Captain Sextastic – guitar, vocals The Count – bass, vocals Joe Danger – drums
Overview The International Playboys have been one of the country’s hardest working unsigned acts since 1999. Hailing from big sky country, they’ve put in over 80,000 miles in the last four years supporting their two self-released albums and a self-released EP, most recently coming to Austin for SXSW 2006 to play the Australian Cattle God Records showcase. Musically, these guys are straight up rock ‘n’ roll with a good sense of humor and a passionate delivery. There is no need for hyphenated sub-gentrification here. Cobra Blood Hangover continues the Playboy’s legacy of gritty, sexy rock with plenty of swagger as it takes you through heartbreaks, hangovers, work-a-day complacency, and the outright destruction of an entire town.Their performances are wildly animated, with drummer Joe Danger flailing like Animal the Muppet, singer Monty Carlo gesticulating and genuflecting madly, guitarist Captain Sextastic stroll-soloing through the audience, and bassist The Count holding it all together from his place stage right.
Press Quotes “Hide your daughters. Preoccupied with sex and rock ‘n’ roll, The International Playboys make irresponsibly entertaining rock.” – Punk Planet “Shades of Alice Cooper and the MC5 updated for the masses. You would have a hard time going wrong.” – Razorcake “The International Playboys play raw, sex-addled rock ‘n’ roll. There don’t seem to be any gimmicks, just five guys and a whole pile of killer riffs and catchy tunes … singer Monty Carlo … somehow manages to sound like Bon Scott, Janis Joplin, Taime Downe, and the guy from Nazareth rolled into one.” – Roadburn.com
Selling Points • RIYL: The Riverboat Gamblers, MC5, Rolling Stones, The Makers, Guitar Wolf • Mastered by Jerry Tubb at Terra Nova Digital Audio in Austin,TX • Have toured the entire country, logging over 80,000 miles in the last four years • Touring on two legs of the September 2006 NoMeansNo tour; two additional U.S. tours in the first half of 2007 • Have shared the stage with NoMeansNo, The Makers, The Riverboat Gamblers, The Fucking Champs, The Drive-By Truckers, Captured By Robots, 76 Charger, The Black Keys, Fireballs of Freedom, Cherry Valence, Rocket from the Tombs, Thrones, Guitar Wolf, and many more • Service to college & community radio stations • Service to national & regional music press as well as webzines and new media • Ads will run in Punk Planet, Copper Press, Razorcake, Arthur, Pop Culture Press, Magnet, CMJ, and more

Featured Artists Dave Longstreth, acoustic, electric, & twelve–string guitars, vocals, percussion, programming, orchestration/Adam Forkner, ring modulator, drum machine, vocals, programming/Nat Baldwin, double bass/Jon Davenport, double bass/Ezra Seltzer, cello/Meara Palmer-Young, cello/Tim Keiper, drums, percussion/Nathan Michel, Hohner electric piano/Ezra Koenig, Rhodes electric piano/Rostam Batmanglij, flute, percussion/Wes Miles, percussion/Sarah Moulton, alto voice/Eli Clark, alto voice
Overview In between a massive national tour in support of The Getty Address and relocation to Brooklyn, chief Dirty Projector Dave Longstreth wrote an EP’s worth of crazy new songs. Playing the electric counterpoint to The Getty Address, New Attitude is a refreshingly pared-down disc: simple, beautiful, and focused. It is dominated by the sound of chiming microtonal guitars, sub-bass dragon breaths, a sextet of cellos and double-basses, and most of all, Longstreth’s singing, which has never been so varied or so wonderfully weird. Few musicians have been called “genius” by Phil Elverum (Mount Eerie) and inspired Prefuse 73 to declare that he is “quitting music.” Few musicians can count Devendra Banhart and Alan Pierson, conductor of New Music collective Alarm Will Sound, among their admirers. Accolades for The Getty Address continue to roll in, and songs from the album have been featured on The Wire’s Wiretapper 14 and on Salon.com. In 2005, Dirty Projectors shared stages with Tyondai Braxton, Akron/Family, CocoRosie, Kip Malone (TV on the Radio), Six Organs of Admittance, Yo La Tengo, Oneida, and more. This is how Dave Longstreth describes New Attitude: “For me, this EP was all about full-spectrum. I tried to make completely hit songs that each created a rainbow of sound by defining poles of extreme low–for that I used sine waves–and extreme high, like the disco car ad three-part falsetto harmony choruses in ‘Imagine It.’ If you like rainbows, this record is for you.”
Press Quotes “Spellbinding in its complete originality.” – Venus “Odd, engrossing, and gorgeous.” – Chicago Reader “[Longstreth] is … a no-brow genius, who claims to find similar solaces in the work of Beethoven, Wagner, Zeppelin, and Timberlake.” – Pitchfork
Selling Points • Several national tours have been booked in support of this album • Follows last year’s critically acclaimed The Getty Address on Western Vinyl • Promotion will be handled by Force Field PR

Featured Artists Luke Fischbeck – guitar, recorder, recording, sax, vocals, percussion Sarah Anderson – dulcimer, recorder, shakers, vocals Peter Fischbeck – banjo Annelise Grimm – shakers, bowls, vocals Joseph Grimm – fiddle, trombone, vocals Tom Van Buskirk – percussion George Langford – percussion Daphne Carr – cello
Overview Luke Fischbeck has been making Lucky Dragons music for almost seven years. He is an industrious tinkerer, and very clever with words. He has made so much great music in the past seven years that States Rights Records recently released a retrospective of his work entitled Sewing Circle. Fischbeck’s latest album, Widows, was recorded on three separate occasions, then endlessly torn apart and mashed together over the course of a year. One of the things Fischbeck discovered with this album was “a tradition of American culture that I agreed with, even felt inspired by.This is my attempt at making American music–music that describes and remembers and criticizes and embraces and expresses and illustrates and ornaments and digests and shits out what it means to be American.” With an impressive array of instrumentalists and Fischbeck’s established talent, Widows is truly mythical, mystical, and amazing.
Press Quotes “Under the name Lucky Dragons, Luke Fischbeck creates ecstatic music that completely transcends genres. My attempts to describe what his music actually sounds like always fall short of the magic he is making. I guess you could say it sounds like ecstatic magic. Challenging stereotypes that electronic music is cold and sterile, Fischbeck’s live show … is a truly great celebration of the human spirit, giving real hope for the techno-future our society is racing toward.” – Art Forum “A line between the handmade and the distanced digital … a successful forging of the personal detritus [and] the mic-ed moments between moments.” – All Music Guide “Lucky Dragons craft some of the most humane, confused, and staggeringly beautiful lap-pap I’ve ever had the pleasure of hearing.” – Portland Mercury
Selling Points • A Marriage Records sub-label • National tour planned to support this album • Follow-up to the LP released by Marriage Records and the Sewing Circle retrospective released by States Rights Records • Full press and radio service by Marriage Records/States Rights Records • Reviewed in Art Forum March 2006, and on several music websites • Service to writers as well as college and nonprofit radio stations • Ads will run in Arthur and Yeti

Featured Artists Jon Downs – guitar, vocals Patrick Boutwell – guitar, vocals Andrea Mason – bass, vocals Mark Howard – guitar, vocals Matt Rozzero – drums, vocals
Overview Providence’s The Brother Kite began crafting their shoegaze-inflected rock sound in 2001. After a split 7” with Vaguely Starshaped on Losing Blueprint Records, The Brother Kite released their first full-length album on Clairecords, a self-titled and self-recorded serving of layered guitars and buoyant melodies. With the success of thebrotherkite, the band was poised to take a bold step, but knew the restrictions of traditional studio recording wouldn’t allow for the creative freedom they needed. So they did what any band would do: built their own studio! Waiting For the Time To Be Right is the long-awaited result of this endeavor, a brave new rock album astonishing not only for its depth and maturity, but also for its willingness to stray from the shoegaze sound that defined their previous works. Layered guitar textures remain an important ingredient, but Boutwell’s impassioned vocals are now pushed to the forefront, showcasing a Brian Wilsonesque gift for melody hinted at in earlier songs. The result is an album of dynamically orchestrated pop, equal parts Loveless and Smile, Quadrophenia and The Soft Bulletin. With Waiting… The Brother Kite respectfully pays homage to some of rock’s great achievements while carving out an innovative spot for themselves in the world of today’s independent music.
Press Quotes “There is a lot going on, and it shows that their diversity and talent have been brought together into a masterful piece of shoegazing beauty.” – SomewhereCold “The is the up-and-coming band with the run-on name Phil Spector should’ve produced instead of Starsailor.” – Splendid

Overview “Gerry Arling and Richard Cameron have a solid handle on all things amusing and eccentric, as well as a penchant for genre hopping.” – Splendid The last Arling & Cameron album came out in September 2001. In October, a tour van crash snapped Cameron’s back and broke up the band. So, call it poetry that this album opens with an “I Will Survive” for our century! Arling & Cameron are obsessively pan-eclectic.They are so posteverything that they’re not even a band. After years of toiling in acclaimed obscurity, providing mutant soundtracks to the lives of the hipper dance floors and denizens of this world, their solid songs have now officially entered global consciousness through extensive use in some mighty mass media. They are the Netherlands’ pride and joy.

Overview “Ben Schulman has a penchant for peppering soft melodies with deceptively cynical lyrics … if Interpol is incandescent Joy Division, Branches is adolescent Wilco. And it sure will be fun to watch them blossom.” – Rockpile Some bands make it look too easy. After day jobs and family commitments led to a brief hiatus, the four men of Branches returned to the studio, stronger and more focused than ever before. These sessions produced the rolling grooves and breezy folk-rock charm of Grown in You, their second album for Contraphonic. Although the band doesn’t split the frontman duties as much, the song arrangements are more collaborative. Thus, each members’ strengths become part of the whole – John Byce’s jazzy stickwork and upbeat vibes, Ben Schulman’s honey warble and pointed strumming, Seth Bohn’s bubbly guitar lines and cheery harmonies, Tim Joyce’s understated coloration and expert ear for arrangement. Recorded in just three days by Barry Phipps (Coctails), Grown in You is the sound of Branches planting their flag.

Jon Crocker’s beard has been growing nicely since he started touring as a folk musician. “I remember the day well,” he recalls. “I was in Wyoming, and this old guy at the end of the bar said that it was a state law that all musicians had to have a beard as a sort of identifying feature. I believed him and immediately drew one in with a Sharpie so as to avoid trouble.” On Crocker’s newest release, the beard is nearly out of control. The singing turns to growling at times, then to moaning, then to a tender whistle. The dull guitars and buckets bang like a good axe against spruce; the songs climax and take you down the canyon in a flash flood. “These songs are not so much about death as they are about life, and also about wagon wheels and fictional saints. There’s something for everybody,” Crocker says. “Except for Pietists. They’ve got no business listening to my music.” Not only did Crocker play all the instruments on the album, he also produced, engineered, and mixed it. But he doesn’t want to take all the credit. “It has nothing to do with me.The beard deserves credit for all of it.”

File Under: Punk and moods come with the music of Stationary Odyssey. An intensely broad spectrum of sounds CD: RCL 17 (O) While not entirely avant-garde or wholly conventional, Stationary Odyssey carries the passion and honesty of folk music in a package composed of the heady aspects of experimental electronica and the explosive bombast of indie rock. Stationary Odyssey began in 2002 as the home recording project of Aaron Tanner; in their four-year history they have released two previous albums on Boyarm Records and The Great Vitamin Mystery. On this third effort, his Joyful Noise debut,Tanner teams up with Brett Siler to produce their most aggressive and guitar-driven album to date. Stationary Odyssey has a sound that is extremely difficult to categorize without being overtly bizarre. Godspeed-esque guitar squeals run throughout some songs, while in others the music borders on electro noise-pop.This is a band unafraid to cross into new musical territory, and as diverse as their sound is, it somehow always ends up being startling and strangely beautiful.

Overview “Surprisingly precise.” – Time Out New York This release is an unnervingly assured introduction to two of Brooklyn’s most exciting experimental bands. Miracle of Birth employs synths, sequencers, and other electronic instrumentation to create something that sounds like a long-lost science fiction movie soundtrack from the year 2456.The music’s density and technical proficiency are made all the more astounding in light of the following fact: Jade Larson is the only member. Child Abuse delivers four no-nonsense tracks that bring together playfully wild keyboards, stuttering pile-driver percussion, and demonic vocal fits. References to John Surman, Suffocation, and Miles Davis are noted, but the group manages to let its individuality shine. A full-length CD on Lovepump United will follow in early 2007.

Overview “Highly recommended, but not for the weak.” – Giant Robot Seize the Time marks Flattbush’s pile-driving follow-up to their debut CD Smash the Octopus, an album described by Barney Greenway of Napalm Death as “savage.” On this new release, the riffs have become uglier, the bottom end deeper, the chaos factor more intense, and the message more direct than ever. And, somehow, they’ve even thrown in a couple of hooks and more than a few left turns. This band operates with military precision and will not be stopped. This is not merely metal, merely punk, or merely political. It is a sonic and cultural onslaught.

Each month includes an interview with Davies about that particular month’s photo. No photos were taken after 1982! Also includes extras like a Mint Records discography and additional fun schnippets. Bev Davies grew up in Toronto, almost went to California with Neil Young on his famous hearse ride to hell, and then relocated to Vancouver, where she basically shot everything that moved.Whether joining D.O.A. on groundbreaking tours or talking to John Lennon on the phone, it all had to be documented. She worked for a few years at Vancouver’s entertainment weekly Georgia Straight and was a contributor to Slash, Damaged, and tons of other fanzines. This calendar is not the final word on Bev Davies’ photos, but the first step in the examination of one of the great chroniclers of our generation. Her photos help document both the famous and unknown rock ‘n’ rollers of the twentieth century, and without a doubt provide a valuable resource for even the casual musicologist.

There are few sessions to rival this one for sheer urgency and gusto. It’s as if something pent-up in these four musicians waited for this combination of players to unleash it – and the music explodes into action. Pianist John Blum is a secret hero of New York’s free jazz community, known as a proficient & forceful improviser in the tradition of his mentors, Borah Bergmann & Cecil Taylor. Blum’s performance on Astrogeny is his shining moment on disc to date. Bassist William Parker is nothing less than the living oak of American free jazz. The legendary Denis Charles was at his best when paired with Parker; together they formed one of the great, yet under-documented, rhythm sections in the music. Overview “Man! These guys are great!” – Iggy Pop Everybody knows that the Hard-Ons have always been a pop band, right? That links to folks like Henry Rollins and bands like Poison Idea aside, they’ve always harbored a not-so-secret fetish for the enormous and soaring melodies of Big Star? However, this tendency has always been tempered by their equal love of thrash, hardcore, and metal. So, for their tenth full-length studio album, the Hard-Ons – Ray Ahn, Blackie, and Pete Kostic – decided to try something a little different. They decided to make a pop record: a pure power pop record, but done in that unique Hard-Ons way. They’re still playing with the same irreverent fury that has made them perennial live favorites around the globe, but they’re doing so with a batch of songs that, in a perfect world, would be FM radio hits.

Overview Since day one in early 1997, Twenty2 have been rocking stages all over Canada with their unique skate-style punk rock. Months after their first performance, they were asked to open for top national acts such as Blink 182, Good Riddance, AFI, No Use For A Name, Diesel Boy, and more. The band signed with New School Records in early 2003 and released The Dudes of Hazzard, which gained them national television exposure throughout Canada and landed them on tour with Ten Foot Pole. In late 2004, Twenty2 released Unstable, which led to a three-week tour with Rise Against and regular airplay on Quebec’s Musique Plus. In late 2005, New School released Still Busy, a compilation of Twenty2’s first three CDs.With this release keeping their fans busy, the band was preparing to record their new full-length, Defective. Twenty2 is back in action with a new fourteen-track album that has enough melodic catches to claim itself as the band’s finest release to date! With producer/engineer Marc McClusky, Twenty2 were able to capture the raw punk sound the album needed to fill the fans’ expectations. From the first track to the last, listeners will find themselves drawn in by the technical guitar riffs, fastpaced drums, and unique vocal style that only Twenty2 can deliver. Defective shows that the band has a bright and successful future ahead of them, and this piece of work will not disappoint their listeners.
Press Quotes “Experience shows in their execution, tightness and musicianship. This is a solid-as-hell disc.” – Skratch “This is balls-to-the-wall, hard rockin’ melodic hardcore! Think of All and NOFX with a monster thick rock guitar sound. Sounds pretty good, huh?” – AMP

Featured Artists Jesse Cole – vocals, guitar Marc McClusky – guitar Josh Baker – bass Tom Bruno – drums
Overview Members of Nuclear Saturday and the ever-popular Atlanta act Lights Out formed In Stereo in early 2005. Since all four members have previously been lead players in other serious bands, they had the knowledge of what it takes to make it! And with only a few months of existence under their belts, they were off to a quick start–receiving endorsements from clothing companies, sponsorships from amp manufacturers, and enough motivation to take on the world. In early 2005, In Stereo signed with New School Records and released their debut record, Death Before Emo, which landed them licensing deals, getting their hit song “Waking Up” on a Discovery Channel special and in multiple movie soundtracks. In mid 2005, Trolley Bus Records picked up the EP for distribution in Japan and have successfully moved over 9,000 units to date! When 2006 approached, the band was ready to move forward with the release of a new fulllength. In Stereo is back with their second national release, Return to Alternative. This exceptional twelve-track collection of pop-punk tunes embeds inimitable song organization and heartfelt lyrics that only frontman Jesse Cole could produce. Compared to their previous release, the songs show a more mature side of the band while still maintaining the one-of-a-kind sound their fans have grown to love.
Press Quotes “This is one fun freakin’ record! Bouncy pop-punchy songs jam-packed with tons of catchy hooks, driving melodies, and heartfelt, inspired lyrics. Kinda like a more upbeat Jawbreaker mixed with Weezer … this is pure power pop in the best sense of the term with right musicianship and fantastic, punchy production to match.” – Fat City “Highly infectious, presenting to the world a thrilling new chapter in well written melodic punk music … In Stereo is destined for rock and roll greatness.” – Highwire Daze

Overview This release will make any As I Lay Dying fan jealous. With so many meaningless metal bands in the Windy City, how does a band of value rise above the clutter? Well, they release quality music and put on show after show, a formula that Chicago’s Until I Bleed Dry seems to have perfected. With their electrically charged, crazy stage antics and a passion for their listeners, Until I Bleed Dry have made plenty of fans, including shout-outs from members of Hatebreed and other big name artists. Having previously taken their sonically crushing sound on the road supporting such metal and hardcore heavyweights as Hatebreed, Damageplan, and He Who Corrupts, this band’s future seems bright. In 2004, Until I Bleed Dry caught the interest of the ever-growing Milwaukee indie label Snapdragon Records, who will release the band’s sure-to-be devastatingly brutal debut in Summer 2006.

Overview Greetings and welcome to the wonderful world of A Billion Ernies, who are either a ska band with hardcore break-downs or a hardcore band with ska and reggae grooves … whichever description makes you the least confused or angry. A Billion Ernies, formed in 2002, have been on two national tours and a UK tour. Stop Calling Us Ska, their second full-length, is self-written, produced, recorded, mixed, and mastered. The latest blasts for Baltimore’s punk stalwarts! National Razor has resided in the shadows of the East Coast punk rock scene for almost ten years. Founded in 1998 from members of previous Washington DC and Baltimore bands, National Razor has been an ever-present staple in the region’s scene. The band’s sound is an uncontrived, surly blend of the Ramones, Stiff Little Fingers, The Beatles, Johnny Cash, and The Clash; a thinking man’s punk band, their songs are awash in contradictions: abrasively melodic, visionary but destructive, callused yet vulnerable. Lead singer Erik Sunday’s scalpel-sharp lyrics are socially incisive, politically corrosive, and leavened with sarcasm and wit.
Selling Points • National Razor has been a cornerstone of the Baltimore scene for almost a decade • The band’s third release is a follow-up to their split release with the legendary UK Subs • National Razor’s blend of melodic punk, garage rock, and sociopolitical commentary is topical and appeals to a wide segment of alt rock audiences • Recorded by Pierre Sprey at Mapleshade Studio, whose label and recording methods receive extensive media exposure through print, radio, and television

Featured Artists Rudresh Mahanthappa – alto sax Vijay Iyer – piano Francois Moutin – bass Dan Weiss – drums
Overview Since the release of Mother Tongue in 2004, Rudresh Mahanthappa has moved to the forefront of the new generation of composers and alto players in jazz. The time in between has seen him take honors in the DownBeat Jazz Critics Poll, receive the New York Foundation for the Arts Fellowship for excellence in composition, and receive a Rockefeller grant to compose music for his Dakshina Ensemble featuring Kadri Goplanath, amongst other things. The time has also allowed Mahanthappa to once again look to the outside world and draw from a system of order for his next project. Mahanthappa has composed the music on Codebook stemming from ideas and concepts related to cryptography. The varied systems provided the groundwork for him to approach the DNA of the compositions on this CD from fresh and previously unexplored angles. A well-known standard could be transformed into an entirely fresh piece, notes could be associated with words and ordered as such, and rhythms further coded and ordered. All of this is to say that another system of order has been applied to music, but has been done so with such care and thought that the result sounds in no way formulated. Instead, it is the work of a composers’ hand deftly working within a system, but creating something entirely organic. This CD is a beautiful addition to Mahanthappa’s growing catalog of releases and a mature statement from a voice that we now see scaling new heights.
Press Quotes “Mahanthappa and Iyer are emblematic of their generation of jazz musicians. They have found ways to tweak conventional forms to find their voices, rather than laying waste to the structures that preceded them.” – Wall Street Journal “A fine test of the comparisons between Mahanthappa and Steve Coleman. While Mahanthappa shares Coleman’s ability to effortlessly stream unusually shaped phrases, their respective sounds are quite different.” – Down Beat “Mahanthappa, the commanding presence at the helm, has a tone that is hard, biting, and emotionally alive. He plays with blinding speed but also draws upon the ardent legato cries associated with Indian double-reed instruments or Hindustani vocalists.” – JazzTimes
Selling Points • Mahanthappa is a key figure in the current New York scene that also features Vijay Iyer, Steve Lehman, and Liberty Ellman • The highly anticipated follow up to 2004’s Mother Tongue • East Coast tour planned for Fall 2006 • Articles will appear in Jazziz and Global Rhythm in Fall 2006 • Pi Recordings will do a full press mailing to the top music publications and a full radio mailing to CMJ, Jazz Week, and NPR stations • Ads will run in Down Beat and JazzTimes as well as on music websites

Overview Talk To Your Kids About Gangs is the culmination of a recording process that began in 2003, with the line-up of Zach Hill, Dan Elkan, Rob Crow, Carson McWhirter, Jonathan Hischke, Ian Hernandez, and J.R.Thompson.The group first assembled for the album Masculine Drugs, a soundtrack to a book penned by founder Zach Hill and released by Suicide Squeeze Records. On their Skin Graft debut, Holy Smokes arrive fully formed with an album that operates on its own terms, lines drawn, standing assuredly on it’s own.Where the band’s debut offered a discordant free-jazz-noise-rock shock, Talk To Your Kids About Gangs emerges as a harmonic tangle of pitches and thunder claps that, as they unravel, come into focus as intelligible, infectious oddments of grooving sonance. Make no mistake, these are songs.
Press Quotes “Holy Smokes are a supergroup better than the sum of its incalculably impressive parts. A balancing act of incredible dexterity … a scorching mangle of instruments igniting waves of dreamily emotive melodies upon a dizzying volcanic terrain. This is barefoot shoegazing on a bed of hot coals.” – Independence Now “Worth telling and re-telling, moody enough for a post-midnight mass blowout and subtle enough to dampen the darkened corners of a sullen Sunday morning. Overview Following the release of 2005’s Angherr Shisspa, Skin Graft proudly presents Koenjihyakkei’s second album, Viva Koenji!! to western listeners. With the original issue on Japan’s God Mountain label largely unheard and fetching enormous prices on the collector’s market, Viva Koenji!!, generally considered the band’s heaviest album, returns to print in a deluxe remastered edition. Press Quotes “Koenjihyakkei towers over most modern progressive rock because of an attention to detail and an overwhelming force of conviction. No irony here: this rocks with the teeth and heart to cut through the ‘scenes’ and the ‘overground’ like a knife … Koenjihyakkei may go down as Tatsuya Yoshida’s greatest achievement: the most perfect fusion of straight prog, the avant-garde, and hardcore punk. Overview Kramer ran Shimmy Disc Records until 2000. He has produced over 500 bands including Low and Galaxie 500. He was the engineer/arranger/producer of Urge Overkill’s cover of “Girl,You’ll Be A Woman Soon.” Recently, he has been composing music for theater productions, still producing great bands, and releasing solo albums on the Tzadik label. Matt Menovcik is the lead singer/songwriter for the band Saeta, whose last album, We Are Waiting All For Hope, garnered much critical acclaim. He is also the bass player for the pop-punk band Ms. Led. Recently, Saeta’s album has been released in Europe on Italian label Ghost Records, the band signed a publishing deal with Warner Chappell Italia, and Ms. Led has been promoting their latest record with much critical and commercial success. For this collaboration, Matt Menovcik wrote and recorded the songs in Seattle and then sent the files to Kramer, who added parts and touches before mixing and producing the final product.

Featured Artists Adrienne Robillard – vocals, guitar Chris Groves – vocals, bass Dan Lowrie – guitar Chris Wetherell – drums
Overview The intense urgency that soars throughout the dark, alluring sophomore album from San Francisco indie rock quartet Citizens Here and Abroad catches the ear and the whole heart. Waving, Not Drowning’s layered guitars fly over driving drum beats while dueling vocals move from dreamy to alarmed as they convey exactly what it feels like to uncover hidden secrets, hold your breath, and gamble everything to make something happen. Since the band’s debut, Ghosts of Tables and Chairs, was released in 2004, they have honed their sound on tour across the U.S. and Europe. Last year a track off Ghosts was featured on the Fox TV show The OC, and the band’s stylish videos continue to receive airplay on MTV Europe’s 120 Minutes and MTV.com.With the completion of Waving, Not Drowning and the growing buzz, you get the feeling that Citizens Here and Abroad are on the brink of exploding.
Press Quotes “San Francisco’s Citizens Here and Abroad are heartbreaking in the very best way … [they] eschew a weird Cardigans vibe, but gentler and more early ‘90s, like before Lush’s Miki Berenyi got all crazy with the Candy Apple Manic Panic.” – The Stranger “An album that instantly speaks to me and beckons me to listen over and over again … Citizens’ music is dark and brooding without going over the edge – a silver lining outlines the songs, providing a sense of hope.” – Venus “Gelling from the remnants of psych-woolgatherers Secadora and dulcet noise-poppers Dealership, Citizens Here and Abroad blend their interests into something containing a little of both, and quite a bit of neither … what an exceptional debut this is!” – Skyscraper “The music is amazing – tight, innovative, and modeled on the best of early-1990s songwriting, such as Sonic Youth or My Bloody Valentine.” – SF Weekly

Featured Artists Patrick Porter – vocals, guitar, bass, drums, keyboards
Overview Twenty-eight-year-old singer/songwriter/poet/author Patrick Porter wears so many hats his head is likely badly chafed. The southern-born wanderer (who currently makes his home in NYC) has recorded several albums over the years, starting at age fifteen when he left his father’s biker bar band to start up his own project. He has recorded countless albums as Patrick Porter, and with combo projects like Phineas Gage and various bands. His most recent album, Lisha Kill (recorded for Australian label Camera Obscura), was widely acclaimed both domestically and abroad. His new album, Die Wandaland, is his first with Portland’s Greyday Records and is an astounding feat of DIY musical architecture, recorded in an isolated studio outside Denver over the span of two weeks. Porter played all instruments; he is a relative virtuoso who learned to play a plethora of instruments after finding several of them dumped in “donation” points on the streets of New York. In addition to writing albums, touring, and generally being the nicest guy in music ever, Porter is also an accomplished writer, having published four poetry volumes as well as a novel (Kristallnacht) and a collection of short stories. His newest novel, Apocalypse Later, is due out around the same time as this release. Porter’s literate background shines through in his lyrics, which do not suffer from the same vapid blandness as many of his contemporaries; indeed, Die Wandaland ebbs, flows, and crescendos both lyrically and musically through ten tracks of new pathos in old worlds.
Press Quotes “Porter’s delicate and often deceptively simple arrangements display a great deal of depth and variety. His subjects are disoriented, embattled, and embittered by the day to day grind of life in the modern world … the melodies lie in wait in the back of your mind only to be remembered days later.” – FakeJazz.com “A masterpiece created with so little financial means opens the door for more of the same, and makes other gifted but poverty-stricken artists feel that their greatest visions are within the reach of their ability, the way punk once did.” – The Inappropriate
Selling Points • Third album in three years • U.S. & UK tours planned throughout Fall 2006 • Release will coincide with the release of Porter’s second novel, Apocalypse Later • Full national and tour PR campaigns run by Yarrr! Overview “Kazuyuki Kishino Null has been whirling out all manner of head-slicing blades of noisy sonic experimentation for well over two decades now, both as a solo artist and with his rock assault unit Zeni Geva. These feats have earned him an esteemed place among Japanese noise royalty like Merzbow, Masonna, and Boredoms.” – Skyscraper Kosmista Noisea (Finnish for “cosmic noise”) consists of live recordings from three different locations during a European tour in 2003-2004. “Kosmista Noisea 1” is taken from two separate live recordings and uniquely combined into one piece with Talcent, Italy on the left channel and St. Etienne, France on the right channel. This technique is designed to provide depth and multiple dimensions. “Kosmista Noisea 2” is a forty-five minute non-edit of an entire live performance in Antwerpen/Belgium, showing the diversity of KK Null’s music from intense clashing waves of noise to structured electro-acoustic ambience. KK Null, born in Tokyo, is a composer, guitarist, singer, mastermind of Zeni Geva, and electronic wizard. He is one of the top names in Japanese noise music, and in a larger context, one of the great cult artists in experimental music since early eighties.

Overview “Null and Murayama concoct a visceral brew of pulverizing free rock improvisation and Merzbowstyle white noise power electronics, as guitars and the mysteriously titled ‘nullsonics’ duel it out with primitive pugilistic percussion, all accompanied by Null’s truly terrifying guttural growls and banshee screams.” – Dusted KK Null and Seijiro Murayama both get full chapters in the book of legendary underground Japanese musicians. Null started Zeni Geva, spent two years collaborating with Merzbow, released records by Melt-Banana, recorded twice for John Peel, and collaborated with Daniel Menche, James Plotkin, Jim O’Rourke, John Zorn, and many more. Murayama is a founding member of Keiji Haino’s Fushitsusha and has worked with Fred Frith, Tom Cora, and KK Null since 1982. Null and Murayama formed Absolut Null Punkt in 1984. File Under:collaboration Punk Northern Stains is the inevitable between experimental phenomenon Carlos Giffoni and CD: RCL 17 (O) Spunk/Fe-Mail members Maja Ratkje & Hild Tafjord. This trio finally met when Giffoni booked Fe-Mail to headline a night of his genre-defining, Brooklyn-based, three-day No Fun Festival in 2005. Early in 2006, Giffoni boarded a flight to Norway, and Northern Stains was born in Spunk’s Oslo studio. Individually and together, Carlos Giffoni and Fe-Mail make records that are rich, detailed, dense, and complex, constantly straddling the line between improvised noise and modern composition. It’s this attention to detail and warmth that make Fe-Mail & Carlos Giffoni such celebrated artists and kindred collaborators. Northern Stains is an absurd combination of live sounds, feedback, and hilarious sampling with a genuine sentimental touch that nods towards both the northern glaciers and the beauty and brutality of nature.Tomorrow’s music today.

Overview “If you took the idiosyncrasies of Throwing Muses and infused them with post-punked, angled rhythms, a captivatingly textured guitar patchwork, and a mélange of evocative melodies and harmony quirks, your Frankenstein’s monster would sound something like four-piece Arcade (now known as Killjoy Confetti) from Muncie, Indiana.” – Cincinnati City Beat Once upon a time in Muncie, Indiana, there was a band of four named Arcade, who made wonderful, melodic, and edgy music; played to sold-out crowds; and toured the nation in their GMC Safari. They were ready to record a follow-up to their debut, Into the Light, when their label (Wooden Man Records) received an ominous cease and desist letter. The author of the letter claimed to have rights to the Arcade band name and threatened drastic action. Thus Killjoy Confetti was born, and plans were made to record another album. The Fun Is was recorded in January at Semaphore Recording Studios with Bob Weston, and mixed and mastered by John Golden. A few tours afterwards, the Killjoy Confetti gang went their separate ways. Being good friends with Wooden Man Records and Killjoy Confetti, the folks at Standard Recording Company pestered both of them for months to allow Standard to re-release The Fun Is to a national audience.

Hands down one of the best records you will listen to this year! An insane amalgamation of lo-fi orchestral psychedelic pop gems from Portland-based Please Step Out of the Vehicle, this album takes you through free jazz freakouts, Game Boy outbursts, layered moog synth-based songwriting, and pop anthems that ring through your brain for days. Please Step Out of the Vehicle are a large band with a textured, triumphant sound that borrows lightly from the best moments of Pavement and the Flaming Lips, squishing together classic psychedelia, video game beeps, folk, summertime pop, and left-leaning lyrical blankets. Sleeping Right and the Best in Homeopathic Magic runs together like an album should, blending song to song and linking lyrical themes. The album is their debut, and a very special one indeed.

Overview Justin Sconza is like light. At his intimate performances, it is difficult to take your eyes and ears off him. He immediately captures his audiences’ attention with his charismatic personality and musicianship. Sconza’s melodies are timeless, his ragtime and European classical influences apparent. He is a classically trained pianist, which gives him extensive knowledge of cornerstone chord changes in western music and allows his songs to be limited only by what’s in his mind. His unique and smart lyrics often inspire audiences to reflect deeply. When he started playing music, Sconza learned everything from ragtime to Nirvana. Currently, he fronts the popular electro/pop group Walter Meego, whose sound has spread from Chicago to Japan. Justin Sconza’s debut EP, Paint By Numbers, will introduce his unique voice and songwriting prowess to audiences around the globe. His first recording showcases the start of what promises to be a fantastic musical career!

White Light is the latest release from Virginia singer/songwriter Sarah White. Like her previous Jagjaguwar release Bluebird, cleverly slated as “not quite country, not quite folk, not quite rock,” White’s sound remains difficult to pigeonhole. The genre is rock, but with a strong dose of country throughout. Some songs veer towards punk, while others are melodic waltzes. This recording with her stripped-down band The Pearls (Steve Ingha on drums and Jeffrey Grosfel on bass) has a simple, natural sound. Bareboned snare, bass notes, and a background of vocals provide ample space for White’s distinctive voice, compared to Cat Power’s Chan Marshall and Edith Frost and described as “delicately bare and pretty” by the SF Bay Guardian.

Overview “The impassioned fervor with which they attack every song comes in part from an old, enduring rage, but more than that, it smacks of optimism. ” – Splendid Campground is a band of three; a trio if you must. They might be from Alaska, Jersey, or perhaps even Tennessee. Doesn’t even matter. Campground plays rock music. The good kind–not premeditated or contrived. Pastor Pasture was recorded off and on throughout 2005. Unbeknownst to the band, the majority of the songs barely crept past the two-minute mark. But don’t let the concept of short songs fool you. Campground surely is not rehashed old punk, or new-wave pop.The songs aren’t really part of a specific breed. Rock music, for sure. But what kind? Who knows and who cares.
