Overview I Killed the Monster marks the triumphant return of Shimmy-Disc, reborn for the twenty-first century as Second-Shimmy. After a fiveyear hiatus, Kramer returns with a brilliant twenty-one-song compilation of tunes written by his good friend Daniel Johnston, whose classic LPs 1990 and Artistic Vice Kramer produced in the late eighties. Each track features standout performances by some of indie music’s brightest stars, and many feature Kramer’s unmistakable prowess as one of his generation’s most celebrated producers/arrangers. Few artists have been where Kramer has been, or worked with the variety of artists he has, and this debut release on his new SecondShimmy label marks the birth of a new era of great music to come.

Press Quotes “One of the few thriving, truly independent small labels devoted to the preservation of non-mainstream rock, Shimmy-Disc … has set a standard for underground survival and idiosyncratic musical vision in a pop age of cookie-cutter video stars, copycat heavy metal, and billion-dollar record company mergers. Kramer is a force of nature, and one of the few true icons of the American Underground.” – David Fricke, Rolling Stone

Overview You may have heard of the idea: you and your friends get together with a copy of The Wizard of Oz and a copy of Pink Floyd’s Dark Side of the Moon. You press play when the Lion roars, and you’re off on a wonderful synchronized odyssey of light and sound. Well, this time we took Head Trauma, an indie horror film by Lance Weiler (The Last Broadcast), and asked our friends to either write a song, or give us an existing tune, that would sync perfectly. Park the Van Records lent both the roster and the staff, and the result is this wonderful soundtrack companion–a compilation that includes new songs from Bardo Pond, The Capitol Years, AWOL One, National Eye, and many other great musicians who spent their own time with Head Trauma.

Press Quotes “[Head Trauma] works its way under the skin, raising neck hairs while teasing us to pry open its psychological puzzle box.” – LA Weekly “A horror outing that revives the under-appreciated monster of the id to great effect.” – Movie City News “Elicits effective creeps … a well-executed haunted house exercise that treads the psychological vs. supernatural line.” – Ain’t It Cool News

Featured Artists Derek Bailey – guitar Cyro Baptista – percussion, vocals

Overview Snaking through unknown musical landscapes, discovering paths and creating new dialects along the way, these two masters have a connection unparalleled in the new avant-garde world, and they celebrated it for the last time at legendary New York performance space Tonic. Twenty-one years ago, Derek Bailey asked Cyro Baptista to record an improvised duet session and soon after released Cyro–one of Bailey’s first titles on his own independent Incus label.Three years ago, Bailey and Baptista had a reunion concert at NYC club Tonic to celebrate their creative musical partnership, and Bailey gave Baptista his blessing to release this special edition CD on Amulet several months before his untimely death last year. Derek Bailey is one of the icons of the avant-garde musical community. A fiercely independent artist, he has influenced many musicians throughout a career that spans over five decades. He has released hundreds of recordings, many on his own Incus label as well as on John Zorn’s Tzadik. He has collaborated with Fred Frith, Anthony Braxton, John Zorn, Cecil Taylor, Lee Konitz, Pat Metheny, Suzie Ibarra, Bill Laswell, Tony Williams, Han Bennik, and The Ruins. Cyro Baptista has recorded with a wide range of artists including John Zorn, Wynton Marsalis, Herbie Hancock, Sting, Paul Simon, Cassandra Wilson, and Trey Anastasio.

Press Quotes “[Cyro Baptista is] the man the stars call when they want that otherworldly flavor in the mix.” – Time Out New York “[Derek Bailey] casts a giant shadow over improvised music … being treated with huge respect and affection by several generations of free improvisers. It is virtually impossible to imagine what this music would be like without the influence he has exerted over the past thirty-five years.” – All About Jazz

Featured Artists Erik Conn – drums Andrew Duplantis – bass Jason Morales – guitar

Overview With this third offering, Tia Carrera depart slightly from the “press record and go” method of documentation that they employed on 2005’s The November Session and 2003’s 6-03-03 (Emperor Jones Records). On this untitled release, the band focuses on songs rather than twenty-minute jams. While still improvised to a large extent, these songs are shorter and structurally tighter. Mixing influences from Hendrix to Sabbath and the Melvins, Tia Carrera are a heavy metal band with soul and a jam band with balls.

Press Quotes “This instrumental power trio from Austin jams with A-bomb quality, like … Guru Guru shredding Jimi Hendrix’s ‘Machine Gun’ at halfspeed.” – David Fricke, Rolling Stone “Like Cream filtered through Sabbath, Tia Carrera pummeled the air with sound waves, riffs as thick as dictionaries, and reams of feedback … the band moved from long stoner rock improvs to horrendous feedback and back again … it was louder than God, vibrating palettes and ribcages throughout the club.” – High Bias “Like Jimi Hendrix jamming out with Dale Crover after smoking a big, fat spleef.” – Austin American Statesman

Selling Points • Andrew Duplantis has backed Bob Mould and Alejandro Escovedo, played in the Meat Puppets, and is currently the bass player of Son Volt • Jason Morales was a touring member of the Butthole Surfers • Both Jason Morales and Andrew Duplantis played on Richard Buckner’s Dents and Shells and have backed him live, notably at the Austin City Limits Festival • Tia Carrera has played at SXSW for the last three years • Fall/Winter 2006 tours planned • Service to college & community radio stations, regional music press, webzines, and new media • Ads will run in Punk Planet, Copper Press, Razorcake, Arthur, Pop Culture Press, Magnet, CMJ, and more

Diane and the Shell 30,000 Feet Tarantella

These four musicians from Catania, Italy are in love with the loudest volume of their amps and have a passion for angular and geometric, yet organic, song structures. The music brings to mind images of a lilting and sensuous dance thousands of feet above terra firma, caressing the outer limits of our atmosphere and roaring back down to earth like a jet airplane. 30,000 Feet Tarantella is a work full of moody irony, joy, and passion. Diane and the Shell illuminates a direct, powerful, and clear sound rich with allegorical metaphors, given life in haunting orchestral arrangements. The grace and sensitivity of their playing belies a maturity and wisdom far beyond their young ages.Their debut, The Red EP, churned forth progressive structures and mutant-disco provocations foreshadowing the fully realized work expressed with this release. 30,000 Feet Tarantella was recorded and mixed by Sacha Tilotta with the artistic production of Agostino Tilotta (Bellini, Uzeda) in one week of amusing and exhilarating delirium.

Featured Artists Kathleen Baird – vocals, guitar Georgia Vallas – vocals, mbira, bul bul tarang Taralie Peterson – vocals, cello, guitar Tracy Peterson – percussion, bells

Overview The ladies are back with their third full-length, and are gearing up for twin U.S. and European tours to support it.Trading off instruments, vocals, and songwriting, this album is a dizzying incantation, rich in texture and utterly transfixing.

Press Quotes “Spires That in the Sunset Rise are a Chicago-based, all-female quartet whose ecstatic, communal psych-folk draws on the same fragrant smoke that fed the otherworldly likes of such vintage acts as Comus, Jan Dukes De Grey, or COB, as well as on the cryptoethnicity of the Sun City Girls’ Carnival Folklore Resurrection series or the gothic spiritualism of Current 93. On their second album … the foursome emit such inspired gusts of collective fire that they resemble a witches’ coven almost as much as a band, their shadowdraped music seeming to issue forth organically from the soil like a sulfurous hot spring.” – Pitchfork “Intoxicating and intense.” – The Wire “[Spires] navigate an empathic terrain that veers between acid-damaged Comus-inspired witchery and more mild-mannered areas that resemble Bridget St. John suffering from ergotism, or the Raincoats as a coven.” – Dream “Generally, Spires are more jarring than comforting, reveling in dissonance and ramshackle percussion.Their compositions tend to be performed with the type of intensity that could tear apart a song at any moment.” – Dusted

Featured Artists Larkin Grimm – vocals, dulcimer, guitar, drums, pennywhistle, bells

Overview Larkin Grimm abducts you into her dreamscape/homeland, hidden behind veils of kudzu and falling water, populated by old friends and deadly monsters. Urgently direct, she is offering us a New World couched in old Georgia sounds: thunderstorms, dulcimers, foot stomps, handclaps, and pleading soul-blues.This is not precious forest-pixie music–this is the beautifully flawed sound of the force of nature, a Siren call to bind all souls and draw them into the deep woods. This year, Larkin Grimm has mesmerized audiences across Europe with a snowballing troupe of fans following her from town to town, and at the Terrastock 6 festival in Providence, where she has been noted as a festival highlight by almost every blogging ‘Scopehead on the planet. Grimm has shared bills with Devendra Banhart, Spires That in the Sunset Rise, Espers, Mi and L’au, and Brightblack Morning Light. Nomadic by nature, she’ll be touring around the U.S. and Europe for the foreseeable future, continuing to win converts everywhere she goes.

Press Quotes “Equally steeped in Georgia stomp and Georgian chant, capturing the sound of songs played and passed down through generations, moldy and pungent with age and meaning.” – Dusted “Guiding her way with little more than guitar, dulcimer, and multi-tracked vocals, Grimm here quilts together Born Heller’s icy, backwoods songcraft; Jana Hunter’s homespun, lo-fi shimmer; and the ecstatic vocal peaks of Christina Carter … the influence of Grimm’s roots in the Georgia foothills frequently creep through, lending the music a deep-set, handed-down fiber that sounds at once staunchly traditional yet still somehow quite unearthly.” – Pitchfork “Her voice not only soars high, but swings low and earthy under itself.” – The Wire

Seattle’s adopted stepchildren Kultur Shock return true to form with their fourth release, We Have Come to Take Your Jobs, once again characterized by their unique brand of Balkan folk music denoted by heavy guitars, relentless rhythms, searing violins, and sometimes irreverent, always impressionable vocals. In the words of singer Gino Yevdjevich: “After ten years, we’re naming our new album what we should have named our first one. It took us ten years to mature so that we could enjoy who we are and what we are doing, to realize that we don’t have anything to lose if we offend, and to learn to just do what we are doing without feeling like we have to apologize for it.This recording is, so far, the closest to KS’s live sound. What you see is what you get.The second revelation, the thing that bleeds throughout the whole album, is that we are a live band of blue-collar immigrants … it was important for KS to realize that and start enjoying being ourselves, belonging nowhere, having been ripped from our old worlds and never becoming a part of the new one … but loving every second of it.”

Overview “Forget your age, forget you’re clever; the awkward stage, it lasts forever.” That’s a mantra that serves to remind us that we never truly shed our painfully insecure and ignominiously crushed youth. It is with us always. The Awkward Stage serves as a musical backdrop for those universal feelings of shame, inadequacy, anger, failure, and loneliness–a revenge of sorts in the form of the most intelligent and brilliantly crafted pop songs to come along in quite some time. Born in Winnipeg and raised in Vancouver, Shane Abram Nelken, leader/songwriter for The Awkward Stage, has long been considered one of Vancouver’s best-kept secrets.Where some play hard to get, he has taken it a step further and played “hard to find.” Much like TV Fall Guy Lee Majors, he’s the unknown stuntman who made Vancouver’s indie scene sound so fine. Nelken’s ability to seamlessly shift among a wide variety of musical styles (and instruments) has made him a much sought-after “hired ringer” by many of Vancouver’s elite acts: A.C. Newman (New Pornographers), Sparrow, Vancouver Nights, The Ronnie Hayward Trio, The Come Ons, The Buzzards, and The Blue Lodge Quartet, to name The Awkward Stage but a few.The debut album on Mint Records, Heaven is for Easy Girls, was co-produced and Heaven is for Easy Girls engineered by New Pornographers’ drummer Kurt Dahle, and possesses that distinctive intangible File Under: Alt Rock musical essence–some say “The Vancouver Sound”–initially spearheaded and made famous by those CD: MRI 96 (M) notorious New Pornographers. Overview “The Transmissionary Six’s Terri Moeller plays harmonica, drums, and percussion, but her voice is what gives this album its indelible print. Like the Cowboy Junkies’ Margo Timmons and Wild Colonials’ Angela McCluskey, her alto has a languid, droopy-lidded quality. Moeller (of Walkabouts fame) and guitarist/pianist Paul Austin (Willard Grant Conspiracy) enmesh those vocals with airy vibes, Mellotron burbles, sweet pedal steel slides, and a warm cello, creating an alluring, Morcheeba-like veil of sonic beauty.” – Rolling Stone The Transmissionary Six are a collective built around vocalist Terri Moeller and multiinstrumentalist Paul Austin. Featured Artists Jenette Mackie – cello, vocals Jesse Sprinkle – drums

Overview Jenette Mackie built Polly Panic on the back of an electrified and often distorted cello married to manic-depressive drums. Her vocal stylings owe as much to Sylvia Plath and Virginia Woolf as they do to PJ Harvey and Tori Amos; Mackie wails out powerfully in raw, charismatic tones. Hardly delicate, the music of Polly Panic draws heavily upon themes of powerlessness, control, fear, and abuse without rejecting the idea of hope or redemption. The result is a sound truly beautiful, dark, and unforgettable. Jenette Mackie was trained classically at the Crane School of Music in New York, but chose to Polly Panic leave her curriculum early to pursue her own independent study with a private tutor in Rochester, NY. Dialogue is the first American release by Tokyo’s new rising power, Hisato Higuchi. Originally a puppeteer, Higuchi has transformed his glacial, shadow box-inspired hand movements to six-strings. Flickering between beautiful melodic/melancholic space-blues and haunting verbal aches, Higuchi’s tones of electric guitar and hushed vocals fan out from the burning embers of Keiji Haino’s quieter, introspective work or even the haunted torch songs of Patty Waters. His seemingly wordless Japanese croon is a smoky, after-hours call of loss. The music manifests itself in a unique and singular conception. It breathes slowly, almost to the point of stillness, an eerie voice and flinty guitar searching for quiet revelation that carries the deep grace of Charalamabides or even Mazzy Star. The perfect introduction for stateside listeners.

Overview When dreamy, hooky crunch-pop is done right, it melts your heart without even trying. Even though Seattle’s Argo is notoriously one of the hardest-working bands in town, their preternatural ability to craft immediately perfect rock gems feels completely effortless–and triumphant. Now, armed with a new lineup and the kind of working cohesiveness that playing loads of shows with bands like Aqueduct, Architecture in Helsinki, and Viva Voce brings, Argo is poised for constant positive progression. And why shouldn’t they be? The band’s 2004 release on Ana-them Records, Jet Packs for Everyone, garnered substantial critical acclaim, received great college radio play, and Argo was even named a finalist in the 2005 Emerging Music Awards. Songwriters and multiinstrumentalists/vocalists Justin Benson and Matt Benham played together since childhood before founding Argo in 2001 with drummer, keyboardist, and vocalist Scott Leonard. They were later joined by bassist/vocalist Jon Wooster. When recorded, Argo captures the vivaciousness and loose energy of their live setup; there’s nothing calculated here.

Press Quotes “Argo’s melodic pop enchantments drift out shy and slow but uplifting, and then they trip off into a sweet indie rock jazzy tumble that catches you off balance. Little hints of bands fall through the lush but still sparse notes: raindrops of Death Cab for Cutie, Joan of Arc, Sea and Cake, and Promise Ring.” – Big Takeover “The debut album for this Seattle group is best described as blissful indie rock. It is the sort of music that is best used as a salve for those stressful days when you want the world to go away … if music is your medicine, Argo is the band you don’t want to miss.” – Tablet “Be the first on your block to check out this fine new Seattle band, which makes pop music that is both smart and dumb in all the right ways. Liberal vintage keyboard sounds sit smartly alongside the indie rock textures, until DAMN! Hooks galore.” – The Stranger

Overview JRK, Wide Hive Records’ newest discovery, comes directly from the same backyard as the label itself: San Francisco’s Mission District. Following in the well-established footsteps of Variable Unit, DJ Zeph, and DJ Quest, JRK is an illuminating beat designer who crunches soul and rock into a hip-hop envelope with a uniquely raw and inspired touch. After releasing two respected underground instrumental 12” records, JRK has been working on this well-rounded, eponymous debut for the past several years. Joining JRK are MCs Knows (Uspros), Pariah (a.k.a. Neal Rames), and Joe Con. Also featured on the release are several songs with up & coming vocalist Jessica Cooke, who delivers an edgy, rocky performance atop JRK’s scathingly delicious beats. The instrumental half of the album marks comparisons to DJ Shadow and DJ Krush in its articulate combination of influences. Co-producing the album with JRK is Gregory Howe, known for producing Variable Unit, DJ Zeph, Dissent, Phil Ranelin, and Calvin Keys.

Featured Artists Muhal Richard Abrams – piano, bell, bamboo flute, taxihorn, percussion George Lewis – trombone, laptop Roscoe Mitchell – soprano & alto sax, percussion

Overview A recording by Muhal Richard Abrams, George Lewis, or Roscoe Mitchell is occasion for notice and celebration. A recording by all three of them together is a historic musical moment. Abrams, founder of the AACM; Mitchell, founder of the Art Ensemble of Chicago; and Lewis, recipient of the MacArthur Grant’s “Genius Award”–together on record for the first time as a trio! Enough has been written about these three men to fill volumes of jazz and creative music history books, but it is the musical documents that tell us the most. Here, we have five pieces recorded in Spring 2005 that explore elements of interest for all three composers: electronics, open playing, contemporary classical, jazz, and the use of space. “Scrape” features each artist performing on his instrument of notoriety: piano, trombone, and sax. “Bound” is a duet between Mitchell and Lewis, with the latter working on his sampling and electronics gear. As the music segues into “Dramaturns,” Abrams opens with a playful descending line beginning a duet between himself and Lewis. The final two tracks feature trio music that incorporates percussion and bird sounds, and all three men embrace the moment as the historic occasion that it was. Pi Recordings takes great pleasure in releasing this music. The label hopes that it is not the last time that they have the occasion to do so, but they are happy to say that there is enough here to satisfy.

Press Quotes “George Lewis has been working the wavering line between jazz and contemporary classical thinking, and that potentially dangerous polystylistic attitude rings triumphant here … his own voyage continues to be compelling, and, thankfully, impossible to pigeonhole.” – JazzTimes “A brief glimpse into the rich world and mind of Muhal Richard Abrams.” – Down Beat “The master conceptualist of the AACM, [Roscoe Mitchell] has a firm empirical base even at his most outlandish; he always gives you a clear view of the formal problem he’s trying to solve.” – New York Times

CD: RCL 17 (O) In the late nineties Atari Teenage Riot (ATR) was seen as part of the electronica genre, but in reality the band had nothing in common with it. It was too avant-garde, too radical in its views, simply too loud and noisy to fit in. Between their inception and their eventual dissolution after the death of the band’s MC Carl Crack, ATR existed as the true alternative for Generation X, kicking down the doors of mainstream music and sexual/racial stereotyping. Even now, the political and social messages that focused the band’s near-apocalyptic sound resonate even stronger than before, as a new generation of punk-influenced youth find Atari Teenage Riot via the internet and good old-fashioned word of mouth. This release stands as a testament to the years 1992-2000, when anything seemed possible.

Overview “Robert Lippok plays with audio space, leaving the listener amazed at how rich and simple the whole thing (process and result) sounds.” – All Music Guide We’ve all felt like robots–working alienating jobs, engaging in scripted conversations with others, and even at home with our repetitive daily rituals. Robert Lippok successfully captures the experience of robotic life on his Robot EP. As it begins, we hear the distant sound of a robot at work, sounding both mechanical and lonely. With the fluttering ambient tones and gently repetitive bass patterns of “Unexpected Behavior No. 7” and the arpeggiating synthesizers of “Silent Movement,” Lippok continues to develop the feelings of isolation and solace found in a predictable existence. “After Work” breaks the established mood with one of Lippok’s trademark catchy synth melodies, but the final track, “Sweet Servo,” could easily be the soundtrack to a robot’s dreams: isolated in the sterile and melancholy world of repetition.

Selling Points • Robert Lippok is a member of To Rococo Rot and has been involved in many collaborations, including recent work with Barbara Morgenstern • Lippok will perform throughout 2006/2007, including an October show in New York to celebrate the release of Robot • Features original artwork by Robert Lippok • Full press campaign by Western Vinyl • Radio campaign by AAM and Western Vinyl • Ads will run in Copper Press,The Wire, Signal to Noise, Pitchfork, Copper Press, Brainwashed, and more

Like broken, incomplete memories of dreams, Shuta Hasunuma’s compositions string together erratic electronic textures and field recordings from Japanese streets with emotive guitar and piano melodies.Throughout the album, he does an amazing job of using simple, sometimes child-like melodies to evoke a feeling of melancholy that’s both cinematic and intimate. Hasunuma’s studies of Environmental Science led to his deep appreciation for the relationship between urban life and nature. He illustrates this relationship on tracks like “Green Repair” and “Morning Fanfare,” both based around contrasting field recordings of Japan’s urban and rural soundscapes. With diverse influences including nineties hip-hop, Terry Riley, Fugazi, No Neck Blues Band, 54-71, lo borges, Tony Conrad, Alice Coltrane’s piano, Somei Satoh, and Haruomi Hosono, Hasunuma has developed a unique ability to communicate the personal and universal aspects of our relationship with our environment. In the end we get something akin to an audio diary, shifting from deeply moody tracks like “Prelude” and “Double Navaho” to playful, whimsical tracks like “Long Road Home” and “Eurikago Afternoon.”

Selling Points • RIYL: The Books, Fennesz, Boards of Canada, Múm, Bibio, Mountains • Shuta Hasunuma has already played several shows in Japan in support of his debut, and will continue to play shows in Japan and the U.S. in support of this release • Full press campaign by Fanatic Promotion • Radio campaign by AAM and Western Vinyl • Ads will run in Copper Press,The Wire, Signal to Noise, Pitchfork, Copper Press, Brainwashed, and more

Overview With vast cinematic scope, Norfolk & Western’s anticipated full-length The Unsung Colony leaps out of the speakers with an epic song cycle that winds up unprecedented peaks and cascades down fertile valleys, testing the limits of the band’s collective arrangements, creativity, and musicianship. From musical embers to sonic wildfires, these songs place a band already known for their dynamic range on a whole new level reserved for the likes of Pink Floyd and Camper Van Beethoven. Norfolk & Western have come into their own, and this is the landmark album that their recent EP hinted at: eclectic and ambitious, enthralling and intimate. Having built support for their unique brand of indie rock on tour with Sparklehorse, M.Ward, The Decemberists, and Devotchka, the launch of The Unsung Colony will find the band finally headlining their own tours. Adam Selzer and Rachel Blumberg are joined by bassist Dave Depper, multi-instrumentalists Peter Broderick and Cory Gray (Desert City Soundtrack), and violinist Amanda Lawrence to deliver their strongest performances to date. The Unsung Colony was recorded in the storied halls of Selzer’s Type Foundry studio, with a field trip to a Portland high school for symphonic embellishments.

Press Quotes “The kind of album that rewards multiple listens, revealing details slowly but surely, and once it captures you, it’s hard to escape its grasp. But then, it’s hard to imagine why you’d want to.” – Pitchfork “There is an overarching visceral and sustaining appeal to this album.” – Pop Matters “Absolutely beautiful and moving, at times soaring, at times hushed … this is a fantastic work.” – Delusions of Adequacy

Overview “Cushiony, hot-weather indie rock.” – Pitchfork It’s no secret that Graves have garnered a loyal underground following. With bandleader Greg Olin’s winning laissez faire vocals and melodic sensibility, Graves have a growing catalog of consistently satisfying releases. His croon is understated, with a timbre not dissimilar to breakout mainstream artist Jack Johnson, but his sonic palate is decidedly experimental, and his penchant for off-the-cuff, rickety solos and scrappy R&B grooves turn otherwise pretty, laid-back ballads on their ear. A number of songs on Easy/Not Easy are downright dirty, as Graves ratchet up the sex appeal with Nate Ashley’s bubbling bass lines, Brian Write’s easygoing Motown-styled rhythms, and Cory Gray’s delicate piano lines and Wurlitzer keyboard arpeggios alternating with sensual, Latin-flavored trumpet solos.

Dear Nora There Is No Home File Under: Alt Rock/Alt Folk CD: MMK 37 (O)

Katy Davidson has been Dear Nora since the summer of 1999. Dear Nora, occasionally a full band, features a cast of rotating members. The band was born in Portland, and is currently based in San Francisco. Dear Nora has released two full-length albums and an EP on Magic Marker Records. There is No Home, Dear Nora’s newest–and final–release, is the follow-up to 2004’s Mountain Rock, an introspective, metaphorical odyssey through a mountainous wilderness. There Is No Home, which was recorded by Davidson in San Francisco between 2004 and 2006, is the delinquent cousin of Mountain Rock. It takes place in a landscape of modern ruins: empty lots full of broken glass, crusty California hills, and smoggy desert. In all the ways that Mountain Rock was about magic in nature, There Is No Home is about nature in ruin.Whereas Mountain Rock was stripped-down, simple, and acoustic, There Is No Home is often loud and raucous. Drawing from influences as diverse as the Roches and Alice Coltrane, Davidson’s style is, as always, heady, ethereal, awkward, beautiful, sarcastic, and kind.

Overview 1991: “The Year Punk Broke.” The smell of teen spirit was emanating out of the Pacific Northwest, from coast-to-coast the youth were proudly flyin’ the flannel, and the term “alternative” had firmly taken root in the rock critic lexicon. In Boston, however, guitarist Glenn Jones had a radically different agenda brewing. Drawing inspiration from sixties psychedelia, surf guitar, American and Middle Eastern folk music, Krautrock, and the more industrial elements of the avant-garde, Cul de Sac developed and honed this formula as an instrumental quartet. As it stands today, the band has long-since cemented their status as one of the leading lights of the avant rock underground. But it was the out-of-left-field splash they made in 1992 with their debut ECIM that started the whole undercurrent. Clearly, there was nothing like it at the time.Today, ECIM almost seems prophetic; its fully realized sound is certainly more in step with recent underground activity than it ever was previously. A crucial chapter in the development and actualization of the American avant rock underground, ECIM has been out of print for many years. Proudly resuscitated, the reissue of ECIM boasts an impeccable digital remastering job, beefed up with three previously unreleased tunes from the period and rounded out with archival photos and liner notes by Glenn Jones and Byron Coley. Features the Cul de Sac live staples “Death Kit Train” and “Nico’s Dream,” plus their original take on the Fahey classic “The Portland Cement Factory at Monolith, California” and guest appearances by the inimitable Dredd Foole.

As a player, composer, scholar, teacher and trailblazer, no living player has a resume as vast as he, nor has anyone so bravely and diligently challenged the tradition by pushing it radically forward. Over the course of nearly thirty years, Basho-Junghans has released fourteen albums, founded festivals, taught seminars, and claims the most thorough archives on the planet of his mentor, the late Robbie Basho.Through it all, Basho-Junghans has secured his own distinct language, one that often speaks many dialects but is anchored in a clear vision of his own design. Multiple streams of singing steel have flowed across many landscapes, but with Late Summer Morning, Basho-Junghans guides a confluence of them all into one glimmering, gorgeous river of sound. Much in the vein of his pastoral epic Rivers and Bridges, Steffen Basho-Junghans harkens back to the heyday of American Primitive guitar as defined by Robbie Basho and John Fahey circa Fare Forward Voyagers. The title track is an unabashedly beautiful extended composition for twelve-string guitar, stretching out languidly and effortlessly like a morning raga saturated in crisp, warming hues.Themes of tone and minimalism are to be found, while glistening guitar lines wrap into circular patterns to create lovely trance-inducing color wheels. Basho-Junghans’ ability to strike out into the unknown while keeping the sounds and tones grounded sets Late Summer Morning apart, something that is evident as multiple sound forms hit the ear with calming bliss. American folk and classical, East Indian Raga, Native American linearity, the resonance of Middle Eastern folk, and melodic Minimalism (i.e. Steve Reich) meld together in a fashion that is tremendously cinematic and vivid. Basho-Junghans has tethered his elaborate language into a pristine wedding of sound, resulting in what surely is the most actualized summation of his musical quest to date.

Press Quotes “Junghans’ solo acoustic pieces, written for both six and twelve-stringed instruments, are nothing if not deeply bound to the earth. He’s so sure-fingered on the fretboard that it frequently sounds like there are two or three people picking away at the steel string, but it’s always just him and his craft, which by this point he’s completely mastered … solo acoustic music doesn’t get much better than this.” – Pitchfork “[Steffen Basho-Junghans] works his newly discovered modes and styles into a convincing and highly personal vocabulary.” – The Wire

Overview Between 2003’s Ear Drung and 2006’s Bloodshot Mama, Bizzart has become something altogether new. A spoken word artist turned MC turned abscratch expressionist, Bizzart now resides in a circuit-bent performance art-hop space that none before him have occupied. A reformed poet who has lost faith in words alone, Bizzart has tucked Alkalyne’s boom bap into bed with Accident’s live noise improvisations, and together they dream of childhood and pray to a sometimes distant God.

Press Quotes “On Ear Drung, Bizzart and producer Accident weave jazz, hip-hop, trip-hop, glitch, spoken word, and about a dozen other styles … who knows what to call this, except fucking good.” – XLR8R “[An] honest arrangement of a passionate artist’s deeply personal work.” – Metro.Pop “It’s compelling enough to listen to Ear Drung as primarily the work of a producer, but Bizzart is a capable MC, sounding like a Bay Area transplant, his style falling somewhere directly between the Hieroglyphics and Anticon camps.” – LA Alternative Press “A unique, label-defying album … Bizzart’s preference to offer substance rather than ironic plasticity alone makes this record a rare find and worthwhile listen.” – Rockpile

Overview Holocene Music is honored to present the debut release from stunningly talented singer and songwriter Alela Diane. Hailing from the deep woods and winding rivers of Northern California gold-rush town Nevada City, Diane grew up singing songs with her parents (both musicians) and performing in the school choir. In 2003 she began teaching herself guitar and writing her first songs, blending tense, trancelike arpeggios with warm, thick vocals and meditative lyrics about family and nature. These soon caught the attention of friend and fellow Nevada City native Joanna Newsom, who in turn persuaded Diane to play her first live show. The songs on The Pirate’s Gospel were written during a trip to Europe and recorded in her father’s studio in Nevada City. Originally available only in hand-stitched limited runs, this pressing marks the first time The Pirate’s Gospel has been made available to stores.

Press Quotes “[A] promising artist.” – New York Times “Alela Diane sings folk songs about big-bellied whales and rocky ground and tatted lace. Her new record is The Pirate’s Gospel, a handmade, fifteen-track thing brimming with kiddy choirs, banjo, bare harp-like acoustic guitar, and Diane’s big, echoing voice, which fills up a room.” – Portland Mercury “Alela Diane’s soulful folk tunes are so beautiful they hurt … enjoy it while you can, because there isn’t a shadow of a doubt that this talented lady is truly a big fish in a small pond, and it’s gonna take an ocean to hold the massive amount of heart found in her music.” – Willamette Week

Tim Buckley was a member of the mid-sixties Southern California band The Bohemians, who came to the attention of Elektra Records honcho Jac Holzman. Rather than inking the band, Holzman singled out the talented Buckley and signed him as a solo artist. Buckley’s 1966 self-titled debut showcased his expressive, multi-faceted, multi-octave voice. While his first album was pure folkrock with psychedelic tinges, his later work moved to the outside with the addition of jazz and avantgarde elements, and gained him a cult audience that has grown considerably since his death in 1975. One of the best albums of the late sixties, and Tim Buckley’s most underrated release, Happy Sad was a change-up pitch for the eclectic L.A. singer/songwriter. Sounding like Fred Neil’s Capitol-era albums, Buckley and his small, acoustic-based ensemble create beautiful, jazz-tinged folk-rock.

Overview “Night after night, in the studio and onstage, Wilson Pickett made good on his claims. His music–soul music–as practiced from the mid-to late sixties, drew its power from the live moment. He marauded a stage like a panther, clawing the air, slinking in and out of the light, screaming, gold lamé leather melded to his thighs, shirt hanging open, sweat pouring down his chest.” – Rolling Stone “Wicked” Wilson Pickett is best known for his giant sixties hit “In the Midnight Hour.” Pickett’s southern soul epitomized the sound coming out of Memphis in the mid-sixties, where he was sent by Atlantic Records to record with the Stax crew (Steve Cropper, Donald “Duck” Dunn, Al Jackson, Jr., Spooner Oldham, et al). Pickett had a long career that spanned from the very early sixties until his recent death, but none of his work is as well known as the tracks included on The Exciting Wilson Pickett. This second album from Wilson Pickett, originally released on Atlantic in 1966, contains the hits “In the Midnight Hour,” “Ninety Nine and a Half (Won’t Do), “Land of 1000 Dances,” and “634-5789.”

Overview “Bill Laswell and Jah Wobble first recorded under the name Divination in the early nineties, issuing Ambient Dub Volumes 1 and 2 in 1993 and 1994.These were extended forays into the spaciest, most psychedelic regions of ambient music, marked by the hypnotic drone of the musicians’ twin basses, gentle dub effects, and subtle ethnic music embellishments.” – Epitonic Bill Laswell & Jah Wobble alter our present state by reinventing a past that’s derived from the future. By combining elements of drum ‘n’ bass, mutant hip-hop, dub, harmolodic fusion, new jazz, world, and out-of-this-world music, the duo expands the potential of our musical experience. Ambient Dub Volume II veers from weightlessly abstract ambience to quasi-dub rhythmic fluctuations and all-out ethno-techno-funk–an irresistible experiment in extreme ambient dub!
