Overview Park the Van Records is pleased to announce the release of the official soundtrack to the motion picture Fast Food Nation! Distributed in North America by Fox Searchlight & directed by indie darling Richard Linklater (Dazed and Confused), Fast Food Nation is based on material from the muckraking book of the same name written by Eric Schlosser. The New York Times bestseller, published in 2001, was an incendiary nonfiction exploration of the industry, and the film version casts a critical eye on fast food in the United States through the destinies of three characters: a marketing executive of a fast food chain, an employee of the same chain, and an illegal immigrant working at the slaughterhouse. Fast Food Nation dissolves the saccharine-coated facade of the fast food industry and exposes its scathing impact on not only our diet, but also our landscape, economy, workforce, and culture. The film boasts an impressive ensemble cast that includes Greg Kinnear, Patricia Arquette, Bobby Cannavale, Luis Guzman, Ethan Hawke, Ashley Johnson, Kris Kristofferson, Avril Lavigne, Esai Morales, Catalina Sandino Moreno, Lou Taylor Pucci, Ana Claudia Talancon, and Wilmer Valderrama. After premiering at the Cannes Film Festival on May 19, the film is scheduled for release in November 2006.The soundtrack, featuring music from and inspired by the motion picture, features luminaries such as Spoon, Nortec Collective, La Sinfonia, Elvis Perkins, Robbers on High Street, and more. The most grisly scene in the film is accompanied by the music of Friends of Dean Martinez, who recorded the score and thereby contributed to what could be perhaps the most dramatic combination of music and film in this century.

Press Quotes “The most essential political film from an American director since Michael Moore’s Fahrenheit 9/11.” – New York Times “An adventurous effort.” – Salon.com “Richard Linklater’s stunning double feature at Cannes this year – A Scanner Darkly and Fast Food Nation – represented not the international super-sizing of this always prolific and political American director so much as the ideal opportunity for his audience to engage in another Linklaterian game of comparative pop.” – Village Voice

Selling Points • Film based on the New York Times bestseller Fast Food Nation, which has sold over 1.4 million copies and has been printed in over twenty languages • Recently screened at the Cannes Film Festival in competition; director Richard Linklater received a Golden Palm nomination for the film • Soundtrack features Spoon, Friends of Dean Martinez, Nortec Collective, Robbers on High Street, Elvis Perkins, and more • Spoon’s most recent album, Gimme Fiction, has scanned over 150,000 to date • Park the Van Records is a Philadelphia tastemaker label that is home to Dr. Dog, The Capitol Years, The Teeth, and National Eye – artists currently winning praise in the New York Times, Spin, URB, Magnet, SF Weekly, Pitchfork, and more

Noah Georgeson is perhaps best known as a producer for Joanna Newsom, Devendra Banhart, and Bert Jansch, though he is also a member of Banhart’s touring band. Find Shelter was recorded in San Francisco and Nevada City between 1999 and 2003. From the Autumn 1999 until Spring 2004, Georgeson lived in the first-floor apartment in a Victorian house on Castro Street in San Francisco. At first, he lived alone in a room that was about the right size for an infant, and had once been a nursery. After a while, he moved into the room down the hall from the nursery, which he shared with his girlfriend Joanna and her harp. Among the waves of their lives in this room, Joanna wrote most of the songs that ended up on her first album, and Georgeson wrote the songs included here.

Overview In the wake of their respective debut albums, Providence’s Athletic Automaton and Montreal’s AIDS Wolf came face to face, stripped bare of armor, wielding weapons of choice. With the battle lines drawn, each band tallied forcefully, committing individual tracks to tape. But as the war waged on, members defected from side to side, new alliances were formed, and the hard lines blurred. What emerged from the battlefield was an entirely new entity: bloodied, unbowed, and undefeated. Recorded by Patrick Crump in Rhode Island and Radwan Moumneh (Cursed, Ire and the Black Hand) at One Hundred Sided Die in Montreal, Skin Graft Records presents Clash of the Life-Force Warriors on dueling formats: as a compact disc and gatefold-sleeved vinyl LP, intimately designed by Montreal’s Seripop. Athletic Automaton is guitarist Stephen Mattos, formerly of Arab On Radar; and drummer Patrick Crump, Pellum 123 expatriate. AIDS Wolf is concussionist Hiroshima Thunder, singer Special Deluxe, and guitarists Barbarian Destroyer and HIM,The Magi. AIDS Wolf vs. Athletic Automaton is the dawn of a new age: a crystalline declaration of independence for an uncivilized world.

Press Quotes “AIDS Wolf formed eighteen months ago, and they’ve already been the subject of polarised debate between two Pitchfork critics. Last year a photo of their spastic live show headed a New York Times article on the Montreal music scene. They’ve been name-dropped in Spin. And all this happened without an album to their name.” – Exclaim “Athletic Automaton rock a sick dynamic that is all about sustain, twisting your mind and expectations past the breaking point.Their riffs and grooves are minimal, the lyrics occasional, and the tension they bend so well is a definite, and most welcome, constant.” – Skyscraper

Featured Artists Eric Arn: guitar Vanessa Arn: electronics, percussion Otis Cleveland: alto sax, bass clarinet, flute, hammer dulcimer, electric kalimba, percussion, alternating interference Johnny Mac: drums, percussion Joe Volpe: bass Douglas Ferguson: electronics John Wilkins: drums

Overview Eric Arn and his Primordial Undermind have tirelessly mined the nether-regions of avant psych-rock for the past fifteen years. Throughout the eighties, Arn cut his teeth in the legendary Crystallized Movements, the Twisted Village flagship band that also spawned Magic Hour and Major Stars (Wayne Rogers & Kate Village). With a wealth of 7” singles and a number of compilation appearances throughout the nineties–plus albums for September Gurls, Camera Obscura, and Emperor Jones–the Primordial Undermind trajectory has grown and evolved with each outing. A rotating membership came to typify the band, and a restlessness to stay put in one soundform denotes a steady progression from distorted, psychedelic Nuggets-esque overload to full-blown free instrumental rock, and everything in between. Just before relocating from Austin,Texas to Vienna, Austria in late 2004, Arn engaged in a furious series of studio sessions with his Austin crew. The results have been honed down to a fantastic new album entitled Loss of Affect, the most outré document of the Primordial Undermind sound to date. Cosmic ethno-drone mantra, avant acoustic, and free acid-rock magma explosions adorned with various woodwinds, shakers, bells, and other instrumental ephemera provide evidence of a sharp left turn for the band. Loss of Affect is a seriously colorful feather in the cap for Primordial Undermind, ushering rock music outside for some truly complex and rapturously liberated explorations in sound.

Press Quotes “Eric Arn and the Undermind have put together another quality mindbender, a concisely trippy work recommended for anyone interested in pursuing new and more colorful methods of rock.” – Austin Chronicle “Eric Arn has led Primordial Undermind through several incarnations and as many musical evolutions, none of them interchangeable but all, in their ways, vastly rewarding.” – All Music Guide

CD: RCL 17 (O) After the breakup of the Murder City Devils, singer Spencer Moody (Dead Low Tide, Smoke and Smoke) and Corey Brewer started Triumph of Lethargy Skinned Alive to Death as a project that would rewrite what a band could be and what a song could sound like. A few years of recording and intermittent touring followed, and in 2005 they released Helpless, a CD built around a Neil Young track. The album aspired to be, in Moody’s words, “the loneliest-sounding record in the world.” That summer Dann Gallucci (A Gun Called Tension, Modest Mouse) joined on drums, keys, and production. After a tour, the group recorded Dead Rhythm, a collection of songs that showcases the members’ independent and collaborative writing styles, ranging from delicate to brutal.

Overview “FCS North straddle the blurry divide between heady, organic rock and hip-hop-inflected electronic dance music with impressive mind/body equipoise.” – The Stranger The first 12” vinyl single of favorite tracks from the recent FCS North LP Say Go! Being both a production trio and live band has its merits. “One day you’re playing a show, the next day you’re remixing it,” says Joshua, referring to “Arc,” the first song and single from Say Go. It starts with the slow rumble of overdriven synths and a tight beat, securing its intentions to be played loud. After the vocals and bass drop, you’re hooked. This release features a remix by Mvmnt favorite & Berlin club resident Ruede Hagelstein (Freundinnen, Lebensfreude, MTC Booking). An amazing take on the original, Hagelstein’s rework slows the hit song down and drops a shuffle into the beat. Fans of the recent wave of live-produced dance music won’t be able to put this single down. A tight mix of Japanese-style hip-hop, rock-infused dance anthems, and tech house will keep it in DJ bags for months to come.

Walter Meego is the alter ego of three Chicago artists who have been consistently turning heads with their funky brand of mutant dance music. The group frequently performs DJ sets and bangin’ electro rock shows around the Midwest. The collaborative essence of Walter Meego ignores pressures of answering, “is it rock or is it electronic?” and instead holds the soft focus of creating music that, in the words of the group, “is fun for all the people of the world.” The artists in the group come from a variety of influences, but what they create always represents the synthesis of the band. Romantic is Walter Meego’s second single, and the first to be released on both CD and vinyl. The band has received high praise on blogs here and across the pond, and Romantic is yet another step in it’s progressive writing style. The remixes by influential artists from the Netherlands, Chicago, and San Francisco will surely become favorites on the dance floor.

Featured Artists Laura Gibson: guitar, vocals Rachel Blumberg: drums, percussion Peter Broderick: viola, saw, percussion, string arrangements Cory Gray: trumpet, piano Adam Selzer: vocals, electric guitar, found sounds Alex James: vocals Wayne Miller: upright bass

Overview Daughter of the town kindergarten teacher and a forest ranger, Laura Gibson’s root runs deep in the small coastal town of Coquille, Oregon. An outsider to the burgeoning Portland music scene, Gibson’s early choice of venues (an AIDS hospice here, a kindergarten class there) and complete lack of music scene knowledge may have confused erstwhile veterans, but her homespun sincerity, enchanting voice, and mature songwriting won ‘em all over in a heartbeat. Listening to If You Come to Greet Me, it’s immediately apparent something magical happened at Portland’s Typefoundry Studios in Summer 2006 with the capable assistance of Adam Selzer (Norfolk & Western). The release is haunting, perfectly bolstered by gorgeous, orchestral arrangements that never detract from the melodic backbone of Gibson’s songwriting. By the end of the sessions, almost all the members of Norfolk & Western had enthusiastically contributed performances. Wayne Miller filled out the troupe with tasteful, loping upright bass lines and Alex James (Delorean) stopped in to sing a few bars. If You Come to Greet Me demonstrates a rich tapestry of emotion over nine songs–hope, ennui, reflection, inspiration, loneliness, happiness, yearning–all stitched together with a steady songwriting hand, where imagery dovetails with melody in an irresistible way.

Press Quotes “Pairs [Gibson’s] creaking, aching croon with sweeping strings, melancholy piano, and her carefully picked classical guitar to devastating effect.” – Willamette Week “There’s a wonderfully nostalgic, almost autumnal quality to Gibson’s music–both innocent and melancholy, it harkens back to her smalltown childhood in the best possible way.” – Portland Tribune “Gibson uses her clear, confident vocals to keep listeners riveted while she experiments with subtle, slightly askew strums.” – Portland Mercury

Overview “Rather than baring the entirety of his soul and forcing us to experience his pain along with him, Scott Garred chooses to take those innermost thoughts and wrap them in pleasant, quiet folk songs.” – PopMatters Having entered double-digit territory with his recording legacy (numbered by volumes) we find Scott Garred’s musical alter ego Super XX Man singing Volume XI from A Better Place. No one word will describe this better place, but without question the song cycle conjures up themes of nesting, family values, domestic life, companionship, and lost youth, all from a refreshing, non-didactic point of view. This is universally charming music. Super XX Man is Scott Garred, Michelle Garred, and Alison Wesley. Like family, they belong together, as Wesley lands the drums, flute, and harmony vocals that reflect Garred’s delicate yet rich tenor voice. Look out Willie Nelson–Super XX Man and family are on the way!

CD: RCL 17 (O) Licorice Roots return with their latest masterpiece, the most recent foray into their world of lush and literate psychedelic pop.The long-awaited third album, with over sixty-eight minutes of emotionally charged and musically stunning imagery, easily surpasses both of their previous cult-classic albums. Shades of Streamers was described by Andrew Grypa as “a cosmic trip through the world of Licorice Roots that swallows all misery whole.” Edward Moyse–the voice, hands, and spiritual leader of Licorice Roots–is known for his lyrical perfection, a universe of astonishingly vivid dreams, and the encapsulation of picturesque extravagance. Licorice Roots’ debut album was produced by Kramer (Danielson Familie, Daniel Johnston, Half Japanese) but this album is guided only by Moyse’s enigmatic mind. Filled with whimsical exuberance, he conjures a lush and swaggering mood where the fuzzy caterwauling guitar and swirling Mellotron seem almost reckless at moments. Featured Artists BreEllen Loughlin: vocals, guitar Davis Martin: drums Brady Millard-Kish: stand-up bass

Overview Seattle-based singer/composer/performer Bre Loughlin has received international airplay and recognition for her electronic projects Kuma and Daylight Basement. On her first acoustic release, Modern American Photo Album, she brings signature edgy vocal stylings and infectious melodies to a vulnerable arena of minimal instrumentation.

Press Quotes “The seductive vocals of singer Bre Loughlin are like a wickedly scrumptious marzipan in the center of rich chocolate. While reminiscent of art pop picadors like Lene Lovich and Toyah Wilcox, she also counts the solid songwriting of artists like The Cure and Billy Bragg as influences. The resulting songcraft is paradoxically dark and often whimsical.” – Three Imaginary Girls “Offstage, Bre Loughlin is easygoing, a good listener, humble, gracious about other bands and musicians–very girl-next-door. Onstage, an invisible switch is flipped: she becomes wildly charismatic, gracefully alluring, intensely passionate, and radiantly sexy.” – Seattle Times “Her chilling croon is part Siouxsie Sioux, part Martha Davis (of The Motels), and all icy diva. She sidles up to the piercing high notes and purrs seductively until they fall into her range.” – Seattle Post Intelligencer “Bre Loughlin breathily exudes impatience and need before the band breaks into a fuzzed wall of glitches and white-noise guitars.” – Seattle Weekly “Eyes cannot escape the entrancing Bre Loughlin, who dances and moves with the magic of a night queen while her minions rip their guitars and electronics to her every whim. It’s a haunting experience that will tie you up and turn you on.” – Tablet

Like its mythological namesake, Sasquatch has stealthily returned from the wilderness to wreak havoc with its own explosive brand of rock ‘n’ roll. This time, the band comes armed with the modestly titled II, which picks up exactly where its 2004 debut left off. II features the same riff rockin’, bass-driven, heavy-on-the-heavy rock that you’d expect from the boys–but make no mistake, this ain’t no sophomore slump. While II is the natural and logical continuation of its self-titled debut, the album showcases the dynamic band that Sasquatch has become. The sounds are bigger and the songwriting is more refined, yet the group still manages to capture the raw essence that won its moniker.

Overview “Time signature changing post-rock indie weirdness … these guys deliver the goods with the biggest bow tie and odd wrapping that I’ve ever had the pleasure of witnessing.” – Smother With the trashy elegance characteristic of Abner Trio, the first track of the band’s new split with Man at Arms touches on subjects as diverse as nationalization, spaghetti, and old people. The Indianapolis-based trio released their debut, Distant Thunder of the Sacred Force, on Joyful Noise in January 2006. Since that time the band has developed a more epic sound, recalling a late seventies/early eighties folk-punk sub-genre that never actually existed. In terms of noise and tempo, the split intensifies when Michigan-based duo Man at Arms takes over. Man at Arms has been orchestrating clever, half-crazed, noisy punk rock critiques of late-stage consumer capitalism since their 2005 Friction Records debut Being and Commerce. This split album with Abner Trio showcases the band with a tighter, more developed sound, but doesn’t sacrifice any of the hysteria of their previous recordings.

Overview Julie Sokolow doesn’t need much to express herself. To record Something About Violins, she used nothing more than her voice, an inexpensive acoustic guitar, and the built-in microphone on her Macintosh G4 Powerbook. Using contrasting melodies and vocal textures, she rehashes the most painful, disappointing, and embarrassing episodes of her past. Sometimes her desperation and anger melt into a sexy slur that could be mistaken for one of Karen O’s finer moments. Overview “One of the most beautiful sounds of 2004.” – Dusted Oren Ambarchi’s Stacte Motors is the most recent addition to the Western Vinyl portrait series. Additionally, these pieces continue the Stacte series started in 1998 with Ambarchi’s first self-released solo recordings. Similar to the four previous editions of the series, which explored one idea at length, Stacte Motors is an experiment in exciting instruments with a spinning motor with strings attached. The resulting recordings are metallic walls of minimalist drones, both fearless and dreamy.

Overview “Justin Vollmar proves capable of presenting dark–strummed dreaminess in a contemporary bedroom sort of way.The results are honest and serene, with enough unexpected aural twists to entertain even the more adventurous listeners.” – Broken Face This is the third album from Bloomington artist Vollmar. By splitting the album up into three recognizable sections, approaching the conceptual, denying its pretensions, and latching onto the moment, Vollmar gives us the kind of honest representation we need in order to know music is alive. With an approach to pop and experimental music akin to the early albums of John Cale–and structural elements informed by albums by Brigitte Fontaine and Areski like Je ne connais pas cette home or Le Bonheur–Vollmar keeps the idea alive in the digital age.

Overview

Hot on the heels of the release of the re-pressed Rover, Drakkar Sauna presents their latest, Jabraham Lincoln. Wallace Cochran and Jeffrey Stolz–playing an array of interesting instruments such as harmophone, glockenspiel, and tamboush–have created another folk masterpiece. Features musicians Jason Groth (Magnolia Electric Company, Coke Dares) and Eric Mardis (Split-Lip Rayfield) as well as a collection of fine producers: Chris Crisci (Appleseed Cast), Jordan Geiger (Minus Story), Mike West (Truckstop Honeymoon), and David Moore (The Hearers).

The debut album from new Marriage Records artist Privacy is a soulful and mellow mixture of classic country and folk music. Comparisons will be readily drawn to Tammy Wynette, Willie Nelson, and Bruce Springsteen. Followers of poets EE Cummings, Dylan Thomas, and Raymond Carver will appreciate the artist’s rendering of tunes in their spirit. Privacy’s Without Mercy is certain to be cherished for it’s threadbare, minimal production as a personal and most intimate release.

Overview The Victors were formed during the summer of 1964 in the suburbs of Minneapolis and followed in the footsteps of other Twin Cities surf-styled combos including the Readymen, Yettimen, Novas, and the Trashmen.Within a year, the band’s repertoire switched to R&B and obscure British Invasion covers by Them and the Yardbirds. The Victors teamed up with local producer Warren Kendrick and recorded his song “Beer Bust Blues” which, over time, has reached frat rock Holy Grail status. With a shift in personnel, The Victors morphed into Litter and continued working with Kendrick, who penned their garage rock anthem “Action Woman.” Litter became one of the Midwest’s premier rock bands, and their musical legacy has been documented on four Arf! Arf! CDs. Victorious amasses thirty-one stompin’ tracks circa 1964-66 (twenty-one previously unreleased) wrapped in an extensive twenty-page book with loads of archival photos and an extensive band history.

Invigorating musical novelties for woodwinds, piano, and percussion, Classical A-Go-Go is the third contemporary classical solo album by Birdsongs of the Mesozoic pianist and composer Erik Lindgren. This body of work integrates scored acoustic chamber music with a rock aesthetic, reinforced by the use of drum kit scattered throughout. The crossover disc features eight original compositions (five of which are new versions of vintage Birdsongs’ pieces), rollicking arrangements of four Raymond Scott selections (best known for accompanying classic Warner Bros. cartoons), Erik Satie’s transcendental “Reverie,” plus an irreverent hip-hop remake of the Edgar Winter Band’s 1972 chestnut “Frankenstein.” The CD concludes with Lindgren’s first serious work, “Baroquea-go-go,” which dates back to 1973 and was conceived as a parody of progressive rock. Features the Sonare Wind Trio and guest percussionists including Alloy Orchestra’s Ken Winokur and Terry Donahue, Fluttr Effect drummer Jason Marchionna, and DJ Flack (Anthony Flackett) who created the rhythm track for “Frankenstein.”

Overview The most interesting aspect of this disk is that it shows how different Yma Sumac and her music were in front of an audience rather than in a recording studio–not only is her singing different, but also so is the “sound” of her music. Overview The spirit of the performance here is uncompromising in its devotion to Frank Wright’s desire to make music that had been heretofore unheard, and to take willing listeners to places they have never been before, and could never get to again. The term “outside” that was frequently used to describe free music at the time is particularly appropriate to Wright’s sound, for it is truly aiming to soar out of this world. When his saxophone enters the fray, screaming & squealing at the top of its register and roaring & bellowing in its bottom, it is seeking to express that which cannot be expressed in words–the infinite power of the soul.

Overview “Elliot Levin … has a quite active career as a published poet and likes to combine the two aesthetics in his performances, much to the delight of the growing live poetry audience … there is nothing watereddown or weak about his performances, no attempt to make the music a bit more accessible to the novices, tender-hearted, or just plain wimpy … no description of the Philly jazz scene exists that does not include something along the lines of, ‘and Elliot Levin has been known to sit in, buggin’ out with his sax and flute.’” – All Music Guide

Overview “Veteran pianist Dave Burrell personifies the best of neoclassicism–uncompromising individuality and in-the-moment gusto.” – The New Yorker Dave Burrell has long been recognized as an important pianist among the most astute jazz fans. Best known for his contributions to the music of Archie Shepp, David Murray, Pharaoh Sanders, and more, Burrell has finally positioned himself as one of the preeminent bandleaders in jazz. After a long hiatus from recording, Burrell returned in 2004 with the dynamic album Expansion. His new trio recording, Momentum, is his best and most self-assured recording to date. Fronting a new, multigenerational trio featuring bassist Michael Formanek (Tim Berne, Elvis Costello) and drummer Guillermo E. Brown (David S.Ware, Matthew Shipp), Burrell has a brave and complex new vision for jazz–one that respects precedents while forging a new path, all without falling into the traps of wandering improvisation. Formanek and Brown lay the foundation under Burrell as the pianist boldly Dave Burrell roams in and out of the structure of his seven compositions, elegantly improvising on the songs’ Momentum motifs. Momentum is a lesson in both vigor and restraint–a captivating achievement that is certain to File Under: Jazz impress and attract. CD: HGH 8 (P)

Sonic Liberation Front Change Over Time File Under: Jazz CD: HGH 9 (P)

Sonic Liberation Front is a band without peers. The amorphous Philadelphia unit has essentially created its own genre in its evolution as a band. Combining free jazz with Afro-Cuban percussion and modern electronics, Sonic Liberation Front has forged an incredible sound assemblage–one that has sailed to new levels on Change Over Time. While others simply talk of combining the ancient with the futuristic, SLF have done so. More than any other band on the scene today, SLF is continuing on the paths of Sun Ra, Albert Ayler, Ornette Coleman, and Art Ensemble of Chicago–new dimensions of the folk art forms of tomorrow. After previous collaborations with such luminary jazz artists as Sunny Murray, Andy Gonzales, and Badal Roy, SLF recruited veteran saxophonist Julian Pressley (sideman for Illinois Jacquet and Odean Pope) into the fold for Change Over Time. Pressley’s contributions to the musical direction of Kevin Diehl, a student of Murray, and Chuckie Joseph, a Yoruban cultural scholar, gives the new version of SLF an incredibly authentic center that the rest of the ensemble build throughout Change Over Time’s eight diverse compositions.

Continuing the story of the undead knight Ashlar, Heimataerde keeps within the Templar setting. However, as far as the work process was concerned, some experimentation was necessary. Heimataerde benefited from the friendly cooperation of other artists in the indie scene, who were invited to contribute in interpretation, voice, and sound design and thus leave their own marks on a Heimataerde production. Overview Members of Nuclear Saturday and the ever-popular Atlanta act Lights Out formed In Stereo in early 2005. Since all four members have previously been lead players in other serious bands, they had the knowledge of what it takes to make it! And with only a few months of existence under their belt, they were off to a quick start–receiving endorsements from clothing companies, sponsorships from amp manufacturers, and enough motivation to take on the world. In early 2005, In Stereo signed with New School Records and released their debut record, Death Before Emo, which landed them licensing deals, getting their hit song “Waking Up” on a Discovery Channel special and in multiple movie soundtracks. In mid 2005, Trolley Bus Records picked up the EP for distribution in Japan and have successfully moved over 9000 units to date! When 2006 approached, the band was ready to move forward with a release of a new fulllength. In Stereo is back with their second national release, Return to Alternative, which will embellish the stereotypical remarks held over the over-played pop-punk genre. This exceptional twelve-track collection of pop punk tunes embeds inimitable song organization and heartfelt lyrics that only frontman Jesse Cole could produce. Compared to their previous release, the songs show a more mature side of the band while still maintaining the one-of-a-kind sound their fans have grown to love.

Press Quotes “This is one fun freakin’ record! Bouncy pop-punchy songs jam-packed with tons of catchy hooks, driving melodies, and heartfelt, inspired lyrics. Kinda like a more upbeat Jawbreaker mixed with Weezer … this is pure power pop in the best sense of the term with right musicianship and fantastic, punchy production to match.” – Fat City “Highly infectious, presenting to the world a thrilling new chapter in well written melodic punk music … In Stereo is destined for rock and roll greatness.” – Highwire Daze

Featured Artists Nathan Amundson: acoustic guitars, piano, vocals Jessica Bailiff: bells, electric guitars, mellotron Chris Brokaw: drums, electric guitar Christian Frederickson: viola Fred Lonberg-Holm: cello Brian John Mitchell: greenhouse construction Bob Weston: bass, beats, piano, trumpet

Overview Long-delayed third album by internationally acclaimed solo artist Rivulets features guests Jessica Bailiff (Kranky), Chris Brokaw (Codeine, Come, The New Year), Christian Frederickson (Rachel’s), Fred Lonberg-Holm (Boxhead Ensemble), and Bob Weston (Mission of Burma, Shellac). Rivulets is the project of minimalist singer-songwriter Nathan Amundson, a prolific songwriter with releases out on several labels including Acuarela, Bluesanct, Silber, and Chairkickers’ Union. Extensive touring overseas has garnered Rivulets an intensely loyal fan base across Europe. A few of the artists that Rivulets has shared bills with in the past include Cerberus Shoal, Cocorosie, Mark Eitzel, Daniel Johnston, Low, Mirah, My Morning Jacket, Songs: Ohia, Shannon Wright, and Xiu Xiu.This is not a folk album. This is an album about hearts breaking, tearing it down, and moving on.

Press Quotes “Often driven only by voice or quiet guitar, Rivulets is frighteningly gentle, yet genuinely powerful. The brooding love songs of Mark Kozelek’s Red House Painters are an apt comparison, as are the acute, windswept soundscapes of Iceland’s Sigur Rós. Most often, the music suggests the isolation and odd beauty found at the center of an iced-over lake in the middle of winter.” – All Music Guide “Think of the hazy grace of Low, the heartrending honesty of Will Oldham and the songcraft of Nick Drake and you understand it’s hard for me not to give this one my wholehearted recommendation.” – Broken Face “A shining gem of introspective modern ethereal folk.” – Outburn

Overview “Crunchy amp noise and ricocheting drum shrapnel form black holes that seem to swallow the surrounding air.” – The Wire Perhaps appropriately, Follow This House was recorded following a European tour in a state of profound limbic haze and completed during the unforgettable heat wave of July 2006.These facts make a whole lot of sense since Follow This House sounds like your entire record collection melting in the trunks of a hundred junkyard cars on a hazy, steamy, sweltering hot summer afternoon. Follow This House is a companion piece to Mouthus’ 2005 full-length for Important Records titled The Long Salt. Picking up right where The Long Salt left off, Follow This House is chock-full of manic bad mood energy, crunching resin-soaked jams, and hundred-year-old instrumentation emerging from the soggy mire only to be slowly pushed back in by poison clouds of delayed vocal groan. Mouthus are on a stated mission to incorporate new sounds and new instrumentation into their recordings. Never repeating Mouthus itself, Follow This House is less fractured and more minimal, embracing the Mouthus sludgefest like a Follow This House settling foundation. Yellow Swans & Birchville Cat Motel Yellow Swans & Birchville Cat Motel File Under: Avant Rock CD: IPT 117 (O) NOT AVAILABLE IN CANADA

Yellow Swans & Birchville Cat Motel is the first collaboration between these two underground phenomena. Both groups have amassed sturdy back catalogs and a great deal of critical acclaim. This collaboration was recorded entirely in New Zealand both live and in the studio. In late 2005, Yellow Swans were blessed with the opportunity to tour Australia. As an added bonus, they were able to scam a free week-and-a-half layover in New Zealand so they could check out the mythic noisescape of their teenagedom. They booked a few shows, most of which were set up by Mr. Birchville Cat Motel, who they ended up collaborating with live. Before the Yellow Swans headed to Dunedin (where Pete Swanson had a birthday party at the Arc Cafe), they were set to play a late show at a club. In walked Campbell Kneale (Birchville Cat Motel), wearing an Iron Maiden shirt and carrying a guitar that had a destroyed cookie tin wedged under the strings. When it was time for the Yellow Swans/Birchville Cat Motel jam, Pete Swanson suggested they “ease into it.” Campbell looked bummed, so Gabe Saloman suggested that they just go for it. Campbell looked happy at that suggestion, so they did, and clearly it worked out pretty well because that’s track two.Track one is a studio collaboration recorded at Celebrate Psi Phenomenon.

Sunburned Hand of the Man The Trickle Down Theory of Lord Knows What File Under: Alt Rock CD: ECP 22 (P)

Overview “Halve Maen is sprawled across two heavy discs, the only format through which the finest, most oblique musical messages can properly be conveyed. I am tempted to shove this in alongside such shadowy double albums as Wickham & Young’s Lake,The Dead C’s Harsh 70s Reality, Charalambides’ Market Square, and Twenty-Six’s This Skin Is Rust, but even those gave you a little breathing room now and then; Halve Maen smothers all light from the get-go as it burrows into the bowels of the earth below.” – Pitchfork Double Leopards, based in Brooklyn, features Marcia Bassett (Hototogisu, GHQ, Shackamaxon, Un, Zaika, Zaimph), Chris Gray (Endless Boogie), Maya Miller (Black Quarter, Religious Knives), and Mike Bernstein (Workbench, Religious Knives). Halve Maen was the second release on Eclipse from the group, and features a different sound than the Out of One album. Halve Maen is very atmospheric, with lots of drones via voice and synth–not as noisy as Out of One,Through One and To One.

Everthus the Deadbeats is a band whose music is every bit as interesting as its members. John Muylle is a trained wood sculptor who was contracted by the town of Elwood, IN to recreate thirty statues of Sandy the Squirrel, the town’s lovable mascot. Benny Sanders studied to operate a letterpress and is one of a handful of people in the U.S. under the age of forty who can set type by hand. Lisa Berlin is the inventor of the Skrote, a hybrid between a skirt and pants that has been purchased by three boutiques in Milan and Paris. Allen Bannister is a commercial interior painter, which allows him to use his Fine Arts major to recreate famous Dada paintings on the walls and floors of suburban homes, much to the surprise of the neutral-color-loving homeowners. Dan Fahrner spent his formative years traveling with a circus from Peru, IN, and later used his Business Management training to help create the World’s Largest Ball of Paint Museum.Together, these people create music that has drawn comparisons to the circus midway, David Bowie, William Faulkner, and Sonic Youth.

Back in 1996, Cornerstone R.A.S. was created to be the official record label of the then-fictitious Skunk Records (a label created by SoCal bands Sublime and The Ziggens). From these humble beginnings has grown an independent label with ten years under its belt and over sixty releases on its résumé. Some of their most notable releases to date include the Sublime tribute album Look at All the Love We Found, featuring artists like Jack Johnson, No Doubt, and G Love; and the Sublime tribute benefit show DVD+CD released this summer, featuring live performances by Los Lobos & Unwritten Law as well as Sublime covers by artists like Chuck D (Public Enemy) and Bedouin Soundclash. Of course, Cornerstone does more than just keep the legacy of Sublime alive. Also included in the extensive catalog are releases by: • The Ziggens (label co-founders) • Bargain Music (on both Sublime tribute releases) • Pepper (on tour with 311 and The Wailers) • Slightly Stoopid (just played NYC shows with Dave Matthews Band) • Monsieur Leroc (from Harlem by way of Germany) • AWOL One (Los Angeles MC whose album features a track with KRS-One) • 2Mex & Life Rexall Are $martyr (2Mex of The Visionaries with Life Rexall of The Shapeshifters) • The Beautiful Girls (multiple gold records in homeland of Australia) It’s pretty amazing to think that in these times, an indie label with a motto of “artist creativity before marketability” can not only survive but also thrive! NOW ON TOUR! (SEE PAGE 36)

File Under: Alt Rock CD: CZR 66 (M) NOT AVAILABLE IN CANADA

Overview

Built to Spill came from unusual parents: Doug Martsch used to be the chief songwriter for Treepeople. He left the band because his desire to tour had waned to near nonexistent, but more importantly because he desired a new creative situation. Martsch enlisted the services of guitar friend Brett Netson from Boise’s misunderstood psychedelic warriors Caustic Resin and a mysterious fellow named Ralf Youtz from Eugene, OR. Martsch’s motivation for recording this album was initially unknown, but considering that he has become one of the most-lauded creative forces in the Northwest, C/Z is proud to have been the launching pad for such a prestigious career … plus, we believe this is one of the best records C/Z has ever released.
