Overview

Damien Jurado: guitar, vocals David Bazan: drums, guitar, vocals Jonathan Ford: bass Ben Brubaker: pliers Blake Wescott: guitar, backing vocals Melissa Blosenski: violin

Made in Mexico Records originally released Damien Jurado’s Gathered in Song EP on March 23, 1999. Minimal copies were pressed, and as a result this EP has become the most sought-after recording of Jurado’s career. Recorded live to a two-track tape machine in a room full of friends, the performance is raw, revealing, stark, and intimate. The reviews for this release were outstanding, and most critics favored it over his debut and even releases that came after. It is with great pleasure that we, the new Made in Mexico Records, re-release this EP along with demos that were recorded for 1999’s Rehearsals for Departure (Sub Pop) and 2003’s Where Shall You Take Me? (Secretly Canadian). These previously unreleased demos capture what Jurado considers to be his “most challenging and frustrating time as a musician.”

Press Quotes “Damien Jurado finds no greater catharsis than exploring these sorrowful points of human struggling and injecting them with a sense of heroism.” – CMJ “Damien Jurado is back to doing what he does best–pairing simple, sprightly arrangements with mobile vocal melodies.” – Pitchfork “Damien Jurado entertains a fascination with life’s darker corners … the cobweb-filled pockets of misery and evil lining the pages of Chuck Palahniuk and Bret Easton Ellis novels.” – Paste

Selling Points • Features David Bazan (Pedro the Lion, Headphones) and Jonathan Ford (Unwed Sailor, Rosie Thomas). • Currently finishing up a full US and European tour. • Previous high profile tours with Richard Buckner, Low, Pedro the Lion, Rosie Thomas, and Songs: Ohia have found Jurado many devoted fans. • Ads will run in Magnet, Pitchfork, DIW, Seattle Sound, and Copper Press. • Radio campaign: college and commercial specialty. • Press campaign: magazines, regional weeklies, tour press. • Targeted internet campaign.

Tom Brosseau Grand Forks Genre: Alt Rock/Folk Label: Loveless Records CD: LVL 24 Price Code: L

Featured Artists Tom Brosseau: vocals, guitar John Doe: vocals Hilary Hahn: violin Gregory Page: celeste, pump organ, guitars Brian Cantrell: cymbals, drums Martin Greaves: organ Doug Meyer: lap & pedal steel Rob Thorsen: upright bass

Overview Tom Brosseau has a voice that has been called totally earthbound and at the same time “sorta out there.” With his new album, Grand Forks, Brosseau speaks of his hometown in North Dakota, of the people there, of convulsions of nature, and of survival. For Grand Forks, Brosseau worked with his producer Gregory Page and recorded at the Maybellaine garage in San Diego as well as in Venice and La Mesa. John Doe, of the great LA punk band X, co-produced and sings on “Fork in the Road.” Grammy-winning violinist Hilary Hahn is featured on “Fork in the Road” and the stunning “Blue Part of the Windshield.” Also, both the former Mayor of Grand Forks and the former Governor of North Dakota share some words in the liner notes. Grand Forks is about the great flood of 1997, homelessness, the love of the sound of the fabulous fifties, Les Paul and Mary Ford, traveling, and keeping the direct sunlight out of your face on the freeway.

Press Quotes “He’s got the plain-spoken directness of Hank Williams Sr. and a delicate way of phrasing that sometimes recalls Billie Holiday.” – NPR, All Things Considered “The voice is unmistakably in its own class–a high, plaintive, almost feminine cry–and the beautifully sparse songs sound as if they could’ve fit on Harry Smith’s Anthology of American Folk Music.” – Chicago Tribune, The Year’s Best Recordings: Pop Music “Brosseau has captured the sparse intimacy of old-school country and folk: you could play some of his less-embellished songs and easily convince someone they were recorded fifty years ago.” – Time Out NY

Selling Points • Co-produced by John Doe (X, John Doe Thing, The Knitters). • Features Grammy-winning classical violinist Hilary Hahn. • Liner notes by former Mayor of Grand Forks and former Governor of North Dakota. • Will be promoted to the many radio stations (via Planetary Group) and publications that have supported Brosseau during his highly successful 2006 US tours.

Various Artists Scream Loud!! The Fenton Story Genre: Rock/60s Garage Label: Wayback Records/Music Maniac 2XCD: MMN 66024 Price Code: 2R

3XLP: MMN 66021 Price Code: 3V

Overview Scream Loud!! The Fenton Story features sixty-one prime slabs of mid-sixties Michigan teen punk by thirty-two bands in two formats: two CDs in a double digipak with a forty-four-page booklet, or three LPs on virgin 180-gram hi-fi vinyl plus insert! This is the reissue of the year–one of the last lost treasures of the wild mid-sixties, now available after forty years. Many tracks are presented for the very first time, and all are beautifully re-mastered in gorgeous mono. The sounds presented herein were largely recorded by young people blessed with the innocence of youth, which made all things seem possible even as college, the draft, marriage, and the other responsibilities bore down upon them. Some forty years later, the songs still possess considerable charm, at their least evoking the magical aura of the mid-1960s, and at their best standing as enduring musical statements. The high quality of music released on Fenton was due in no small part to the skills of label head Dave Kalmbach and the unique sound of the Great Lakes Recording Studio. Described by rival studio owner Phil Roberts Jr. as “something of a genius on matters of electronics and sound,” Kalmbach had originally operated out of a basement, but circa 1963 he partnered with Bruce Smith to move into the Our Theater in downtown Sparta, a few miles north of Grand Rapids.

Selling Points • CD set includes two discs in double digipak plus forty-four-page booklet. • LP set includes three records pressed on virgin 180-gram hi-fi vinyl plus insert. • Wayback Records, a sub-label of Music Maniac, features primitive rock ‘n’ roll from the best days of rock music–the sixties! • Album review in Mojo. • Reviews will run in sixties- and garage-related magazines.

Nail welcomes Alien8 REcordings to its roster Alien8 Recordings has been giving a voice to artists creating alternative, experimental, and post-rock music for over ten years. Originally focusing on noise and experimental music, the label has since broadened its scope to include numerous other genres while becoming particularly active in releasing the works of artists based in its hometown of Montreal. Sub-labels include Fancy, Substractif, and Cobra.

Featured Artists Tim Hecker: computer

Overview It was January 1996 on the coast of Honduras. The musician in question was looking to catch a ride with a local vessel to the neighboring islands. There was one shrimping vessel in port that day, and its captain Jimmy was willing to take disheveled hippies on board. This album is dedicated to the idea of Jimmy the high-wire shrimper–misplaced nautical charts, trade winds, shortwave miscommunication, midnight whispers, amorxxx. Alien8 Recordings is reissuing Radio Amor, originally released on Mille Plateaux in 2002, in order to maintain the availability of one of their label’s most important artists. The recording has been out of print for Tim Hecker Radio Amor two years, out of the grasp of Hecker’s growing legion of admirers. Currently, Hecker is still basking in the universally glowing reception of this year’s Harmony in Ultraviolet on Kranky (Rated 8.7/Pitchfork’s Best New Genre: Electronica Music). Radio Amor is a key release in Hecker’s discography, bridging the output between 2001’s Haunt Me and Label: Alien8 Recordings CD: ALI 66 2004’s Mirages. Price Code: O

NAIL WELCOMES THE RETURN OF ORANGE TWIN RECORDS! Overview “Resonates with quietly powerful songs about listless love and heartache … a new, altogether original exploration of modern romantic misery.” – Venus

Lovers Sleep With Heat Genre: Folk Label: Orange Twin CD: OTW 25 Price Code: M

During the writing and recording of Sleep With Heat, Carolyn Berk lived in Athens, Boston, and Portland: the entire expanse of the touring musician’s American highway. It is this relentlessness and longing-turned-searching that is woven into Sleep With Heat’s tales of loneliness and heartache. Brokedown, hungover laments from motel parking lots and frozen foreign cities tell of the emotional labor of perpetual goodbyes, and of the simultaneous enchantment of someone who doesn’t stick around long enough to ever get too comfortable in a place. Musically, Sleep With Heat finds the band at its best, at times with expansive guitars and gorgeous strings, at other times stripped down to the honest, barebones sound of a banjo-plucked Southern front porch. Features Phosphorescent members Brent Jones, Jesse Flavin, and Matthew Houck, as well as Daniel Rickard (Parker & Lily).

Selling Points • Lovers, either as a solo performance or as a band, will continue to travel all over the US, including a tour in February/March 2007. • Guest appearances by members of Phosphorescent and Parker & Lily. • Press and radio publicity via 230 Publicity. • Orange Twin will be sending directly to press and radio. • Ads will run in Magnet and Rockpile.

Overview “A cross between The Softies, Kimya Dawson, and the Carter Family.” – Razorcake The nine songs on this CD reach a level of beauty both in Madeline’s voice and the music accompanying her. While still maintaining her beautiful folk style, she has also expanded to incorporate new elements: drums, piano, bass, backing vocals, and more complete the serenity of this very enjoyable album. But it is still undoubtedly Madeline’s voice that sets her apart from other singer/songwriters. As clear and precise as handbells with just the slightest country twang, its haunting quality is the perfect vehicle for her smart, sensual lyrics. Madeline Adams was raised in the vibrant music scene of Athens, Georgia, and began performing her songs by the age of sixteen. Her 2003 Plan-It-X release Kissing and Dancing is now in its third pressing and has earned her national recognition and a loyal fan base. To date, she has been on eleven national tours and has been billed alongside acts like Nedelle, Jens Lekman, Antony and the Johnsons, Robyn Hitchcock, Calvin Johnson, Tilly and the Wall, and David Dondero.

Cynthia G. Mason Quitter’s Claim Genre: Alt Rock Label: High Two CD: HGH 10 Price Code: P

Featured Artists Overview

Cynthia G. Mason: vocals, guitar Larry D. Brown: guitar, backing vocals, harmonica

Intimacy and honesty are what draw people to Cynthia G. Mason. The Philadelphia-based singer/songwriter has the rare ability to bring listeners inside her emotions. For nearly ten years, Mason has earned acclaim and fans through a series of self-released recordings. On Quitter’s Claim, she makes her songs widely available for the first time with a national release. Mason’s voice is best compared to Suzanne Vega or Chan Marshall of Cat Power, but her voice is more than just her vocal intonations. She also has a distinct voice as a writer, crafting elegant, engaging ballads of regret, guilt, and longing. Opposition marks her songs, which are always dark and unhurried. She is open, but guarded; honest, but mysterious; bitter, but reassuring; calm, but unsettled; restless, but complacent. Her songs are quiet ruminations that somehow resonate loudly. Her first set of new songs in five years, the tracks on Quitter’s Claim are raw and delicate. Backed only by sparse acoustic guitar, Mason allows nothing to distract from her assured voice and cathartic lyrics. The result is a collection of songs that appear cold and dark, but reveal themselves as warm and permeating.

Press Quotes “Amazing.” – Rockpile “With Grace Kelly-esque grace and Nico-like allure, Mason … intones intricately detailed songs for her seagulls.” – Philadelphia City Paper, Best of 2000 “Her casual, breathy voice has invited frequent Nico comparisons, but the overall feel of the album–with its slow, elegant pop compositions that never veer too far toward perkiness or sleepiness–is most evocative of Suzanne Vega’s tender snapshots and Cat Power’s oblique emotional poetics.” – Time Out New York

Selling Points • Philadelphia City Paper nominated Mason as the Best Female Vocalist in the city and put her on the cover of their music issue. • Mason contributed vocals to B.C. Camplight’s Hide, Run Away (One Little Indian) and sings lead vocals on their “Blood and Peanut Butter,” featured on Grey’s Anatomy. • RIYL: Suzanne Vega, Iron & Wine, Kristin Hersh, Richard Buckner. • Featured on the CD accompanying The Believer’s music issue. • Full service to music press, web outlets, licensing agents, and college/AAA radio by High Two. • Ads will run in Magnet, Arthur, Paste, Copper Press, and more.

Featured Artists

Overview

Hutch Harris: vocals, guitar, bass, keyboards, drums Kathy Foster: drums, vocals Ben Barnett: guitar Brian Grant: bass Albert Menduno: keyboards

Over the last decade, singer-songwriter Hutch Harris has attracted the attention of those in search of the perfect pop song. And from his past bands (Hutch and Kathy, Haelah) and backing gigs (The Minders, Duster) to his current post as The Thermals’ frontman, Harris has been on that quest himself. The road he’s taken can best be witnessed through Urban Legends, the lo-fi project he started in his San Jose apartment in 1996. A string of seven-inches was punctuated by a split with Her Space Holiday, whose frontman Marc Bianchi released Urban Legends’ 1999 full-length on his own label, Audio Information Phenomena. Throughout this time, Harris and his revolving lineup recorded at home and in friends’ studios, leaving an embarrassment of unreleased riches. With even the official releases largely unavailable these days, Contraphonic campaigned to re-package and re-introduce some of the best Urban Legends material. Of Old Lost Days tracks the development of Harris’s songwriting, compiling seven-inch tracks and unreleased material from 1997 to 2002. Songs range from early lo-fi nuggets to acoustic songs that foretell both the Hutch and Kathy album and the four-track beginnings of The Thermals. Of Old Lost Days is full of songs that were meant for the top of the charts, but were made in the corner of the basement.

Press Quotes “While definitely lo-fi, Urban Legends perfectly capture that Herman’s Hermits snap-pop groove.” – Portland Mercury “Urban Legends’ indie pop is neither folk nor psychedelic–it most clearly draws on acoustic ‘60s pop–and manages to be uniquely more inventive than derivative.” – Skyscraper “Mellow and melodic most of the time, this occasionally kicks into some powerful dynamic rock ‘n’ roll … reminds me of Built to Spill mixed with Superchunk.” – Punk Planet

Selling Points • Cover sticker: “Recordings by Hutch Harris of The Thermals 1997-2002.” • First time on CD! • Features members of The Thermals, All Girl Summer Fun Band, Hutch and Kathy, The Minders, Duster, Kind of Like Spitting, and The A-Set. • The Thermals’ fan base continues to explode, thanks to enormous press for The Body The Blood The Machine (their third album for Sub Pop), a nationwide tour with Cursive (Saddle Creek) in Fall 2006, and headlining tours planned for early 2007. • Urban Legends toured constantly, and there is constant demand for reissues. • National college radio campaign; service to national print & online magazines. • Ads will run in Pitchfork, Punk Planet, Magnet, Pop Matters, Innocent Words, Amplifier, and more.

This collection, handpicked by co-creator Andrew Weatherall, serves as the first in a series of reissues highlighting the classic yet sadly long out-of-print releases on Emissions Audio Output. This edition focuses on releases by the influential Two Lone Swordsmen, with tracks taken from the landmark Fifth and Tenth Missions, Swimming Not Skimming, and Stockwell Steppas. But this compilation is not just one for the collector–these sessions produced the backbone of a sound developed on the flightpath estate and later forged in a room above a Chiswick dry cleaners and in an east London basement. Two Lone Swordsmen is due to release its latest album soon, and Rotters Golf Club chairman Andrew Weatherall has issued his debut solo EP to coincide with this set.Yet, he still finds time to gig across the world while fellow Swordsman Keith Tenniswood finishes up another round of future-electro classics under his illustrious Radioactive Man moniker.

Overview “It’s hard not to respect the idiosyncratic Mr. Weatherall, whether you like all his music or not … he forged the apotheosis of dance-rock. His uncompromising dub/hard house/techno sets and club nights inspired a legion of DJs and producers.” – DJ Magazine This is the first-ever “solo” release from Andrew Weatherall, and we say that because it is the first release he has ever deemed fit to be issued under his name alone. Weatherall should require no introduction, but in case he does (shame on you), here it is: having forged a path against the mediocrity of popular music for nearly two decades by issuing releases under the names Sabres of Paradise and Two Lone Swordsmen, as well as having produced the now-legendary Screamadelica by Primal Scream, he has still found time to run a number of record labels, notably Sabres of Paradise and, of course, Rotters Golf Club. The Bullet Catcher’s Apprentice is a career-scanning yet forwardAndrew Weatherall thinking behemoth of a release, taking clear sonic cues from Weatherall’s status as a dance, techno, The Bullet Catcher’s Apprentice and house phenomenon while skillfully acknowledging his grandly professed love of protest music Genre: Electronica from the mid-twentieth century. Soon, Weatherall will be found back at work, DJ-ing across the globe while simultaneously overseeing a compilation of classic, long out-of-print Emissions tracks and then Label: Rotters Golf Club CDEP: RGC 911 releasing a brand new studio album from his lauded Two Lone Swordsmen outfit. Overview “The State Champs are a bunch of ringers. These are artists I’ve individually watched and respected for a long time, but the first time I saw them play together was like seeing all the magic crystals together at once.” – Alan Sparhawk, Low Amy Abts was tired of being a female singer/songwriter stuck in coffee shops and acoustic-womensinging jams. As an already appreciated songwriter, having played shows with everyone from Wesley Willis to Robbie Fulchs, Abts brought her catchy songs to another level by recruiting an elite team of rockers and taking over the Twin Ports of Superior, WI and Duluth, MN. And, the group is now releasing its long-awaited debut on Chairkickers’ Union Music (Low, Kid Dakota, Haley Bonar.) The State Champs combine male and female vocals with giant beats from Zac Bentz (The Surfactants, Dirty Knobs, Both) and guitar work by Greg Cougar Conley (Both, Puddle Wonderful), The State Champs with Eric Anderson (The Surfactants, Gonolius) rounding out the group with his classic metalThe State Champs influenced bass lines. Overview “Should one ever drive an American muscle car on the German Autobahn, one should make sure Giant Brain’s Plume serves as the soundtrack.” – Dave Merline, MPH

Giant Brain Plume Genre: Alt Rock Label: Small Stone CD: SSO 67 Price Code: O

Giant Brain came about as a concept for a group that would fuse all things good about Detroit rock with the improvisational aspects of Krautrock. Andy Sutton (bass, drum programs, general concepts) had played in bands with his brother, Al Sutton, producer of records by such indie rock stalwarts as Big Chief, Don Caballero, and The Laughing Hyenas as well as “stoner rock” acts like Five Horse Johnson and Halfway to Gone. The siblings enlisted the musically and otherwise unemployed Philip Dürr, former lead guitarist of Big Chief and conveniently the only real Kraut in the neighborhood, and Al took the reins as editor/arranger. This Philosophy-101 musical method of thesis/antithesis/synthesis has finally yielded Plume, a merger of Krautrock and stoner rock that will undoubtedly make Daimler-Chrysler wet its corporate trousers with envy at the Teuto-American synergy it can only dream of achieving. A word of caution, though: early versions of Plume have been shown to cause impromptu outbreaks of provocative dancing. Consider yourself warned.

Selling Points • Produced by Al Sutton (Big Chief, Don Caballero, Five Horse Johnson). • Features the guitar stylings of Philip Dürr (Big Chief, Five Horse Johnson). • Major media mailing in conjunction with release date. • Background music spots on MTV, VH1, Fuel TV, and various others.

Overview “Dredd Foole, a.k.a. Dan Ireton, remains one of the most liberated and liberating musicians on the planet.” – Volcanic Tongue

Dredd Foole Daze on the Mounts Genre: Avant Rock/Folk Label: Family Vineyard CD: FVR 46 Price Code: M

During a chunk of the 1980s Dredd Foole, a.k.a. Dan Ireton, guided a visceral garage-cum-avant vision with backing band The Din (lined with members of Mission of Burma and Volcano Sons) before stripping down and recording the alarmingly decisive (and divisively received) folk-heavy In the Quest of Tense solo fulllength in 1993. Since, the Foole has been a beacon for many modern-day electrified folk explorers like Six Organs of Admittance and Charalambides. Originally issued as a limited CD-R, Daze on the Mounts is now available for the masses. Echoing between a Tim Buckley-esque bellow, Erika Elder’s environmental treatments (harmonica, synthesizer, percussion), and the truly three-dimensional psychedelic production work of Matt Valentine (Tower Recordings, MV & EE) Dredd Foole displays as staggering a song cycle and avant-folk expression as one’s ever heard before.

Selling Points • Originally issued as a limited edition CD-R. • First widely available solo album since 1996’s In the Quest of Tense. • Dredd Foole has been noted as an inspirational force to Six Organs of Admittance, Charalambides, and MV & EE. • Previous albums released by Forced Exposure, Ecstatic Yod, and Child of the Microtones. • RIYL: Tim Buckley, Bill Fay, Kazuki Tomokawa, Incredible String Band. • Press, web, and radio service by Family Vineyard. • Ads will run in Arthur,The Wire, Signal to Noise, and select websites.

Overview “Dazzling interplay.” – The Wire The heir apparent to Moondog and Zoltán Kodály, Daniel Padden and company blend European folk, narrative, popular, and chamber forms to create modern compositions that provide attentiongrabbing hooks and thought-provoking challenges. At times formal and at others improvisational, it is difficult to pin down the One Ensemble sound. Influences range from the classic pop-psychedelia of Robert Wyatt to the deep experimental drone of Third Ear Band. Blissful free jazz, delicate acoustic out-folk, tape collages, Eastern raga, and mystical modern minimalism all peacefully coexist in the One Ensemble’s uniquely beautiful universe. Part of the growing Glaswegian experimental music scene, One Ensemble members have had a hand in many excellent Scottish bands, including Nalle, Volcano the Bear, and Directing Hand.

Selling Points • Features members of Directing Hand (Secret Eye), Volcano the Bear, and Nalle. • Previous releases on Catsup Plate, Textile (France), and Brainwashed. • Daniel Padden feature interview recently ran in Dusted. • Tours and international festivals with Nalle and Spires That in the Sunset Rise. • Heavy US and European touring continues in 2007. • Reviews in The Wire, Dusted, Signal to Noise, Dream, Foxy Digitalis, and Ptolemaic Terrascope. • Full radio service via AAM; full press service by Secret Eye. • Ads will run in Galactic Zoo Dossier, Dream, Signal to Noise, and The Wire.

Overview “A great combination of formless free-fluxing towers of non-song and charged huzz with a bunch of percussive lawnmowers carving stubble straight across its face … totally fantastic and highly recommended.” – David Keenan Infinite Death is the first full-length CD release from Death Unit, a supergroup of total psychedelic noise destruction formed by Carlos Giffoni in early 2005 that includes Chris Corsano and Trevor Tremaine (Hair Police) on double drum attack and Brian Sullivan (Mouthus) on guitar. Infinite Death captures the absolute essence and energy of Death Unit by combining a long studio track recorded at Sonic Youth’s Echo Canyon studio with a scorching ferocious live track recorded on Death Unit’s 2005 summer tour. Album artwork by Dominick Fernow (Prurient) and mastering by James Plotkin (Khanate) put the finishing touches on this perfect package of intensity, focus, and noise.

Overview “Former members of influential SF garage band Dura-Delinquent inject their latest project, Sugar & Gold, with a drowsy blend of funk and synth. On this three-track EP, the quartet lay down a singular groove that, at its best, sounds as if someone held a gun to Rick James’ head and forced him to have sex with Steely Dan.” – Release Print

Sugar & Gold Workout b/w Do It Well 12” Genre: Dance/Soul Label: Antenna Farm 12”: ANT 519 Price Code: D

Sugar & Gold is a six-piece electro soul group whose sound has been compared to everything from KC & The Sunshine Band on LSD to the Everly Brothers with a fierce dose of Rick James synth. With staccato guitar licks and a heavy bottom groove, S&G put on a dynamic live show that is sure to get even the most uptight teasers out on the dance floor. The band spent most of 2005 recording in New York and Los Angeles, playing close to forty shows by the year’s end. After two West Coast tours and a month on the East Coast, the group has developed a loyal following. Reaping the benefits of the last three decades in electronic music, S&G blend sampled beats with acoustic instruments, melded together by a fine thread of harmony–a kind of Caribbean Kraftwerk. Nicolas Dobbratz and Philipp Minnig, songwriting partners since childhood, have had a colorful musical past in such infamous outfits as Dura-Delinquent and Connexion. Having served as a support act for BJM, BRMC, the Make-Up and the White Stripes, the boys have traveled across the US and Europe on several occasions and even served as an impromptu back-up band for Neil Haggerty. Their songwriting process has been described as intuitive and emotional, yet systematically thought out, with one prevailing message–celebrate your problems in order to get beyond them…

Overview “Nurzery [Rhymes] offer a complex composite of rich textural, atmospheric pieces blended with pounding dance floor smashers.” – Sonic Seducer Nurzery [Rhymes] made a stellar debut with the release of its first single, Blood and Wine, and the band was rewarded with immediate success in clubs worldwide. A year has passed, and these busy German boys have been hard at work recording their first studio album, Injections. After stripping down almost two hours of recorded material into a condensed and refined form, we can honestly state that Injections leaves nothing to desire. The result is a tour de force that pleases not only the body–with dance floor smashers like “Through Your Eyes” and “Sick Little Bitch”–but also the mind. The “injections” snippets offer intense and disturbing sound bites that will clean your musical palette in between the “real” tracks. Nurzery [Rhymes]’s sound is slightly reminiscent of bands like Psyclon Nine, Tactical Sekt, and Dawn of Ashes, but has plenty of original ideas to propel this exceptional band into the realm of serious contenders for the dark electro throne.

Selling Points • Excellent debut from this harsh terror tekk band with a strong fan base. • Extensive MySpace promotion (www.myspace.com/nurzeryrhymes). • Service to DJs, radio stations, and print media.

Overview “These five young men manage to jam-pack enough undoubtedly impressive hooks, infectious melodies, and sing-alongs to last any listener a lifetime.” – AbsolutePunk The Johnstones were born for the stage and have been ripping it up ever since their prolific formation in late 2002. Hailing from Toronto, the group began receiving immediate recognition for its incredible originality as well as one of the best live shows in new music today. As a part of the new generation of punk/ska, The Johnstones take this lethal combination to a whole new level, where energetic and melodic phrases can be found side by side with serenading vocal harmonies and technical licks. Rapidly becoming one of the most recognized bands in Canada, The Johnstones scheduled their first Canadian tour, impressing crowds from Charlottetown to Vancouver. After destroying over-capacity crowds across the country, The Johnstones holed up in the studio to create Word is Bond, a frenetic and insanely addictive punk-ska disc chock to the balls with instant classics and fists-in-the-air screamalongs.

The Expos Old Friends Genre: Ska Label: Stomp Records CD: STM 53 Price Code: O NOT AVAILABLE IN CANADA

The Expos stay true to the origins of soul, ska, and rocksteady music, recognizing their own roots and culture in the process. The proof is in the group’s sound–raw, melodic, and harmonic. Its live set is a perfect example of the members’ ideals, integrity, and spirit. They prioritize a muddy groove and a thick rhythm to which no crowd has been able to stand still! In 2005, the band recorded their first studio album, Old Friends. They chose to work with the ultra-respected Mitch “King Kong” Girio (King Apparatus), and in the fall of that year, Girio and the band spent seven long, fifteen-hour days recording twelve tracks for their debut album. After shopping the release of Old Friends, the band began to receive a lot of recognition from new places. It received airplay on various college radio stations, and has been heard on a wide array of established stations from Edge 102 to CBC Radio. As the group grew more popular offstage, it continued to refine its sound onstage. It also grabbed the attention of new audiences, playing alongside a diverse set of acts ranging from Lyn Taitt to Catch 22 and Chris Murray. The Expos will support Old Friends with a nationwide tour of Canada and the US in Fall 2006, and will continue to write and perform the music that they love.

Overview

Close on the heels of the re-pressed Rover, Drakkar Sauna presents its latest effort, Jabraham Lincoln. Wallace Cochran and Jeffrey Stolz, playing an array of interesting instruments and backed by a host of talented musicians, have created another folk masterpiece. Jabraham Lincoln, the second album in Drakkar Sauna’s Dane serial, is an examination of sincerity as a hermaphrodite and of the consequences of the group’s second release, Drakkansasauna. Some of the musicians featured include Jason Groth (Magnolia Electric Company, Coke Dares) and Eric Mard is (Split Lip Rayfield). And, Jabraham Lincoln boasts a collection of fine producers: Chris Crisci (Appleseed Cast), Jordan Geiger (Minus Story), Mike West (Truckstop Honeymoon), and David Moore (The Hearers). Hailing from Lawrence, Kansas, the gentlemen of Drakkar Sauna list influences from Pete Seeger to Mandy Patinkin and can harmonize like the The Louvin Brothers. The band has spent a good part of the past year touring the continental US with Two Gallants, The Impossible Shapes, Horns of Happiness, Kirk Rundstrom, and The Ants. It has shared the stage with Dark Meat, Phosphorescent, Jolie Holland, and Split Lip Rayfield, and has played the Wakarusa Music Festival twice.

Press Quotes “Instead of taking the easy coffee-shop route, Drakkar Sauna infuse their front-porch folk music with an absurd Captain Beefheart spin … it’s an extremely smart, hilarious, musical, and oblique combination for all you fans of The Fall that keep a couple of Elliot Smith singles under the mattress.” – Portland Mercury “The songs that Stolz and Cochran write tell sordid tales of wayfaring miscreants, cold-blooded homicides, pre-meditated homicides, and other things that never happen in my neighborhood … their two records are incredible works of gleefully dark transgressions, olden-time harmonies, and musical arrangements that never feel laborious or contrived.” – Daytrotter “Seedier, funnier, and ultimately fresher than O Brother and its modern-day siblings.” – UrbanPollution
