Overview Dengue Fever is a Cambodian rock band. They are garage rock. They are psychedelic. They are world music. They are anything but mainstream. There is virtually no other band in the world playing “Khmer Rock,” the style of 1960s Cambodian rock derived from Armed Forces Radio in Southeast Asia during the Vietnam War. Sophomore album Venus On Earth features eleven original songs that expand on the band’s sound but will please hardcore fans of both the group and the genre. There is no other band like Dengue Fever, which garners fans in everyone from indie kids to well-heeled world music consumers.

“A unique and surprisingly danceable group that combines a beautiful Khmer-language vocalist from Cambodia and a quintet of seasoned locals with a knack for mixing Southeast Asian pop,Vietnam-war-era lounge music, klezmer, ska, surf rock, and Ethiopian jazz.” — SPIN

HELLO, BLUE ROSES HELLO BLUE ROSES

press quotes “Bejar often draws comparisons to the late, great Marc Bolan and David Bowie, mainly due to his high, nasal voice. But lately, Destroyer’s arrangements only mildly hint at stardust memories … blurring of bluesy folk, pop, and lo-fi indie rock.” — Billboard “Destroyer is the ‘bandonym’ of singer-songwriter Dan Bejar. Bejar is part of the critically acclaimed Canadian group The New Pornographers. But … Destroyer is almost as well-loved by critics.” — NPR “Dan Bejar graces us with another hybrid glam-folk explosion … canned electronic horns, schoolyard hand-claps, and doo-wop-style backing vocals are methodically strewn across 12 of Bejar’s most consistent compositions to date to create an enchanting view into the world of one of the most enigmatic figures in indie rock.” — PopMatters

PINK MARTINI HEY EUGENE! LP

Press Quotes “[Pink Martini] delivers a knowing sophistication backed by skillful arrangements … Ms. Forbes is an unpretentious, pitch-perfect chanteuse who can be breathy and girlish or sultry … she tempers heartbreak with savoir-faire.” — New York Times “No matter how Pink Martini gets described, there’s always an element being overlooked, a reliance on phrases such as lounge, cosmopolitan rumba, or neo-classical that only tell part of this rich story. Impressive at every musician’s station, this ensemble produces music that’s charming and elegant.” — Variety

Overview Pink Martini—the genre-bending, best-selling, supremely talented, and raucously fun 12-piece ensemble—returns with Hey Eugene!, a 12-track sonic journey anchored by deft songwriting and a no-holds-barred dose of cabaret showmanship. Delivered with sultry grace by lead singer China Forbes, Hey Eugene! shines throughout—from the golden-era Hollywood melody of “Everywhere” to the French cabaret of “Ojala.” Other collaborations anchor the set as well: the pan-world “Dosvedanya, Mio Bombino” with its Latin-meets-Russian beat and globetrotting subject matter, plus the ForbesLauderdale penned sexy sway of “City of Night.” Peruvian percussionist Martin Zarzar debuts the romantically complex “Mar Desconocido” and bassist Phil Baker adds the quiet beauty of “Cante e Dance.” The group also mines the past for hidden gems, including the Japanese-language track “Taya Tan” and the band’s first-ever recording in Arabic, “Bukra wba’do.” Meanwhile, clever lyricism leads to an empowering dose of pop perfection on the title track by Forbes (about a boy she met at a party who asked for her number and then never called). Finally, jazz legend Jimmy Scott makes a stunning guest appearance in a duet with Forbes on the closing song, “Tea for Two.”

“This is rich, hugely approachable music, utterly cosmopolitan yet utterly unpretentious.” — Washington Post

Press Quotes “Violinist Petra Haden and accordionist Miss Murgatroid (née Alicia Rose) make a startling duo. Rose’s accordion sounds church-organ, big in some parts and then like the fiercest ’60s-era electric keyboard in others, while Haden, formerly of That Dog (and the daughter of jazz bass virtuoso Charlie), wields a beautiful tone, terse but rich … a wonderful recording.” — Andrew Bartlett, Amazon.com

Selling Points • First full album of original compositions from both artists since the release of Bella Neurox in 1999. • Petra Haden is a former member of The Decemberists, That Dog, and The Rentals who has toured and/or collaborated with the Foo Fighters, Sean Lennon, Yuka Honda, Mike Watt, Bill Frisell, Victoria Williams, and many others. • Haden’s cover of Journey’s “Don’t Stop Believin’” was released on an Engine Room Recordings comp in August 2007. Major internet marketing push in support of release, with Haden’s track as a key selling point. • Haden’s a cappella CD tribute to The Who’s Sells Out has achieved great critical acclaim and copious press. She has performed multiple concerts of “Sells Out” with an all-star choir in both Los Angeles and New York. • Miss Murgatroid has an extensive discography that includes five full albums and many collaborations (John Fahey, Negativland, Red House Painters), most recently guesting on accordion and vocals with PDX’s Boy Eats Drum Machine. • Miss Murgatroid’s alter ego Alicia J. Rose is an accomplished music photographer who has created images for The Decemberists, Menomena, Viva Voce, Mae, Rocky Votolato, and countless others. • Miss Murgatroid was recently interviewed by PureMusic.com. • Three-panel digipak features stunning artwork by Christine Shields. • Hiring independent publicist and radio servicing company. • Majority of advertising will be done online, including mp3 giveaways.

Overview Reuniting after more than a four-year hiatus, Miss Murgatroid and Petra Haden convene anew for another bout of ebullient sonic symbiosis. Their simple but unique combination of accordion, violin, and voice delves into waters deep and strange, with a mix of vocals and instrumentals that transport the listener to eerie dark alleys, lush Italian seasides, and the false bottoms of haunted toychests. Their last effort, Bella Neurox, met with critical acclaim and delighted fan frenzy. In 2003 a mysterious anonymous benefactor approached Miss Murgatroid about reuniting with Petra Haden for a follow-up to Bella Neurox. Apparently he had written his last two books while listening to their collaboration, as well as to Haden’s fantastic solo disc Imaginaryland and Miss M’s spooky, surreal Through Alien Empires. He offered to help the duo make their next record with the honest motivation of simply wanting another one.

The girls agreed, and their newest effort offers nine new tracks of absolute symphonic loveliness. Fueled by mutual heartache, spectral visions, grandiose baroque fantasies, and their undying fondness for one another’s brains, Miss M and Petra Haden have truly outdone themselves. Layering vocals, violin, viola, and accordion in ways that will utterly enchant and intrigue the listener, this is a true labor of love that defies as many genres as it is influenced by.

PRESS QUOTES “17 Hippies is a prolific outfit … their polyglot style has evolved to take in dozens of genres, and here they’ve chosen to mix an Eastern European odd-metered rhythm, played on bass and accordion, with a plaintive, gentle reading of the ‘Apache’ melody on the clarinet. It’s very simple, and effectively makes an old classic new again.” — Pitchfork “17 Hippies sounds like someone used a warped blender to mix an accordion, ukulele, banjo, saw, clarinet, violin, trumpet, trombone, flute, a Jew’s harp, an Indian tampura, an Irish bouzouki, an assortment of other string and wind instruments, a Zydeco band, Luminescent Orchestrii, and a circus sideshow from somewhere in Eastern Europe. In other words, their sound is quite bizarre and absolutely fantastic.” — Murúch “17 Hippies are one of the most exiting bands that exist in Germany today. And if you miss them, it’s your own fault.” — Rolling Stone [Germany]

“17 Hippies are ridiculously underrated. They should be in the front rank of European world music artists.” — Charlie Gillet, BBC London “The musical idioms are … disparate, yet the mix is never incoherent. 17 Hippies have learned how to fuse sundry musics into one.” — Washington Post “The renegade sound of 17 Hippies—captured on the new disc Heimlich— is an engaging blend of pop sounds and traditional eastern European folk melodies.” — Chicago Sun-Times

SELLING POINTS • Recently featured item on Pitchfork’s Forkcast. • 17 Hippes created the soundtrack for Andreas Dresen’s awardwinning film Halbe Treppe (Silver Bear, Berlin Film Festival). • The band has worked with New York guitarist Marc Ribot, Bordeaux’s notorious Les Hurlements d Léo, Japan’s famed Issei Ogata, and more. • Promotion by Rock Paper Scissors.

OVERVIEW For the past 12 years, Berlin’s very own “special orchestra” 17 Hippies has been playing a whirling, crashing, diving, bobbing, weaving mixture of music from around the world. Imagine a mix of Eastern melodies, Balkan rhythms, French chanson, Anglo songwriting, and Cajun tunes, all perfectly blended together to create a unique pop style. Starting in Spring 1995 as a trio playing mainly instrumental music, the band mutated into an ensemble now numbering 13 musicians that displays a vast range of musical creativity, ranging from their French radio hit “Marlène” to the soundtrack for Andreas Dresen’s award-winning film Halbe Treppe (Silver Bear, Berlin Film Festival). With their new CD Heimlich, 17 Hippies have set a milestone. On this intoxicating album, most of the tunes are vocal—sung in German, French, and English. From a wild dance inspired by a Romanian melody to a Zydecogoes-Bollywood tune, 17 Hippies have created another masterpiece.

Selling Points • An utterly unique experimental folk-pop record. • Kurt Weisman is a member of the acclaimed outfit Feathers as well as J Mascis’ Witch. • Full press mailing by Important Records. • Ads with The Wire.

Overview While Spiritual Sci-Fi is a result of work that Kurt Weisman has been undertaking for the last ten years, it’s certainly also worth noting that he’s a multi-instrumentalist in the acclaimed folk outfit Feathers as well as a member of J Mascis’ Witch. Weisman’s stunning musicality and absolute compositional prowess make this an extremely compelling and wonderfully musical experimental pop-folk recording. Kurt Weisman is a New England composer in his late twenties around whom all the wheels of life seem distinctly sped up (he’s known for his extreme falsetto). Hair is cut into strange shapes and then suddenly shorn, moustaches appear and disappear with alarming frequency, cyber-punk outfits melt into freak-folk into noise into French bohemian—complete with beret. And it’s all taken way too far to be considered “in fashion.” He fills these forms with the content they suggest to him until they bear the mark of a kind of insanity. The songs already sound like they’re floating above something else when you hear them with just voice and 12-string. These are not regular songs with weird production. The alternative to the expectation refers to the expectation. He seems to know every tricky thing that’s ever happened in pop music and how to take it further … but then takes that even further by giving verse 2 all these ear-stretching variations on verse 1. There’s a lot of weird meter stuff, little skips and jumps, or little things that get stretched that seem inspired by his own computer micro-editing techniques. The “song” and the “production” are a snake biting its own tail. It’s not just electronic-sounding stuff (filters, pitch shifts, time stretches, delays, videogame sounds, synth sounds, noise, beats) that lives all over these songs, there are also all sorts of weird parts his friends put on top. Music teachers, ex-jazz students, and self-taught searchers: New England is the future of music. Chord upon chord upon chord upon chord. The “chord” is dead. This is something else. The whole history of the composition is right there in the same space just like the planet, the universe, and the soul. Creation and destruction are one.

• Includes exclusive tracks from Helena Espeval (Espers), James Blackshaw, Jozef van Wissem, and Chieko Mori. • Conceived of and assembled by James Blackshaw, who has received major press around the world for his recent albums, including rave reviews in Rolling Stone and Pitchfork. • Blackshaw recently toured the US with Jose Gonzales. • Promotional mailing by Important Records. • Ads with The Wire.

Overview The Garden of Forking Paths was compiled for Important Records by guitarist James Blackshaw. Compositions were recorded specially for this collection by Helena Espeval (Espers), James Blackshaw, Jozef van Wissem, and Chieko Mori. Beautifully assembled, The Garden of Forking Paths serves as a singular and particularly unique musical statement. The story of how this compilation came into being is, unlike many others, a relatively simple one. Blackshaw’s wish was to put together a collection of experimental music for solo stringed instruments, with little to no overdubs, that would hold up as a thoughtful and engaging experience from beginning to end. Chieko Mori, a Japanese composer, koto virtuoso, and one-time FABRICA resident, first came to Blackshaw’s attention in 2005 with her beautiful and mesmerizing debut recording Jumping Rabbit, for John Zorn’s Tzadik label. Jozef van Wissem is a similarly accomplished Renaissance lute player and composer from the Netherlands who has collaborated with Gary Lucas and Tetuzi Akiyama and whose solo albums often make use of palindromic or mirrored structures interwoven with field recordings to haunting and immensely compelling effect. Swedish cellist and improviser Helena Espvall, perhaps currently best known for her work with US psych-folk group Espers, has also played with such luminaries as Pauline Oliveros and Eugene Chadbourne. Her own recent solo work has demonstrated amazing power and sensitivity. Each of these artists has a very unique and unorthodox approach to writing and performing, which challenges as much as it embraces their respective instrument’s musical roots, be they in Eastern or Western traditional or classical forms. Despite the variation in instrumentation, not to mention the differences in nationality and the backgrounds of the performers, it is interesting to note certain similarities to be found between the five tracks contained on this compilation. Sometimes it can be heard melodically; sometimes within the movement, space, or color of the pieces; sometimes it is simply felt—a purity or emotional resonance that defies analysis and can rarely be articulated in words. Overview Travellers Two is a full-length recording from the duo of Tara Burke (Fursaxa) and Sharron Kraus. Together, Kraus & Burke have created an ethereal record of dark-folk magic. Tara Burke and Sharron Kraus were due to travel to Finland together for a week but missed the flight, so instead they decided to spend the week recording together, and Travellers Two is the result. The time was spent out in the fields, visiting burial mounds, and then coming back to Kraus’s home studio to work. The two had played previously together, and done some recording, but this is the first time an album was conceived. Formerly a member of the Silbreeze band UN, Burke started her Fursaxa project in 1999 after UN disbanded. A longtime resident of Philadelphia, she decided to leave the city of brotherly love for the touring life. So from April 2005 through April 2006, she toured extensively throughout the UK, US, and Europe with friends and fellow musicians Jack Rose, Sharron Kraus, Alexander Tucker, Christina Carter, Marcia Bassett, and Spires that in the Sunset Rise, to name a few. For her live performances she uses mostly looped vocals, flutes, percussion, Casio keyboard, guitar, and mandolin in an attempt to transport her audience into the ethereal realms. On her forthcoming album Alone in the Dark Wood, she employs a myriad of instruments such as mandolin, guitar, violin, banjo, balalaika, organ, bells, flute, percussion, and voice. Espers member Helena Espvall and Burke have a duo called Anahita, and in 2006 they released Arcana en Cantos on Ireland’s Deserted Village label. They are now working on their second release. Currently, Fursaxa is playing and recording music in the rural hills of Pennsylvania. Sharron Kraus is a singer/musician/songwriter who creates music rooted in the folk traditions of England and Appalachia. Her work is characterized by soil-rich vocals, haunting banjo, fine acoustic guitar, and visionary wordcraft. She has been featured in The Wire, Dirty Linen, New Folk Sounds, Arthur, Ptolemaic Terrascope, and Broken Face. She has been interviewed on BBC Radio 3 and has recorded sessions for BBC Radio Scotland, Freakzone on Radio 6, and independent radio stations across the US. Her fan base includes veteran folkies Shirley Collins and Archie Fisher, as well as indie figureheads Michael Gira, David Tibet, and Sonic Youth’s Thurston Moore. Kraus’s debut album Beautiful Twisted was released by Australian psych label Camera Obscura in 2002 and received rave reviews around the world, including a listing in Rolling Stone’s Critics’ Top Albums of 2002. After touring with US psychedelic folk band The Iditarod, she collaborated with them on an album of wintry songs and soundscapes entitled Yuletide in 2003. Her second solo album, Songs of Love and Loss, featured BBC Folk Award-winning fiddler Jon Boden and Grammy-nominated early music violinist Giles Lewin. Recent and ongoing collaborations include The Black Dove, an album written and recorded with Californian folk songsmith Christian Kiefer, and Leaves From Off the Tree, an album of traditional songs recorded with Meg Baird and Helena Espvall.

Overview

Thuja Thuja Genre: Experimental Label: Important Records LP: IPT 173 Price Code: R (SRP $17.99) Single Pocket 12” Sleeve NOT AVAILABLE IN CANADA

Improvisational Bay Area quartet Thuja creates aural landscapes that capture the reverberations of wood and wire, the sounds of breaking sticks and scraping stones, and the ambience of their surroundings into a shifting, dynamic musical framework. The members of Thuja play off each other and the space they inhabit with a natural instinct, succeeding in conjuring spectral compositions that are at once abstract yet inviting. For this self-titled release, their sixth full-length and first for Important Records, Thuja has assembled recordings from various live performance spaces (Hemlock, Oaklandish Gallery, Pehr Space, Kains Greenhouse) and welcomed a variety of guests into the fold to expand their microscopic psychedelia toward a new plateau. After eight years, the semi-annual gathering of the members of Thuja is almost traditional, but new clearings are still to be discovered in its thickets of sound. This self-titled release is yet another essential artifact in Thuja’s ongoing explorations.

Overview Get Yr Blood Sucked Out is Viva Voce’s third LP, and is a markedly dark and sultry record, epic in scope and anything but simple in formulation. An intense, empowering album, Get Yr Blood Sucked Out sums up the struggle to keep things pure in a world of vampires waiting to suck the life out of you. There are obvious dark qualities, lyrically and musically, that create the push and pull of a lovingly human, violent record. Unlike the consciously minimal approach of some of Viva Voce’s two-piece contemporaries, the band’s ambition, both live and on record, is to achieve multi-layered musical feats of amazement: an underlying deftness of arrangement and composition supports the band’s mélange of fuzzed-out psychedelia, infectious melody, and hand-clap breakdowns (often all in the same song).

Press quotes “A potent musical response to rampant Arabophobia in the West, but also … a very personal, ambivalent and honest description of turbulent times … It’s a genuinely disturbing record, precisely because it refuses to be situated in one category or another, whether crudely anti-or pro-war, experimental, or pop.” — The Wire “One has to marvel at the consistently high level of [Sam Shalabi’s] prolific output.” — Pitchfork

Selling Points • Latest release by one of Montreal’s experimental music gurus. • Features well over 25 musicians contributing their talents. • People familiar with Alien8 Recordings or Montreal’s eclectic underground are well aware of Sam Shalabi. • College radio mailing. • Print/web press mailing.

Overview Sam Shalabi’s third solo outing for Alien8 was written and conceived in Cairo, Egypt in 2006 and further realized in Montreal and Vancouver during the first half of 2007. The album is the result of two separate ideas that slowly coalesced over a couple of years. The first was Shalabi’s notion of composing songs for singers he knew and enjoyed, and the second was that of creating a “modern Arabic pop record.” While Shalabi was living in Cairo, he came to the realization that Arabic pop music was much more wild, wide, and weird than he had imagined, and the discovery had a huge influence on this recording. Upon listening to Eid it becomes clear how the breadth of Arabic pop music influenced Shalabi: each piece is stylistically allowed to take its own shape. The recording opens with a beautifully played piece of Shalabi’s solo oud playing, which gives the listener the impression that he is in store for a gentle acoustic journey. Gears shift drastically with the follow-up track “Jessica Simpson,” one of the recording’s most unusual selections. Guest vocalist Radwon Moumneh does an excellent job delivering his vocals over repetitious percussion, and then a totally unexpected Guitar Hero-style solo slips in out of nowhere. Sam Shalabi enlists the help of far too many guests to list here, although one standout contribution is that of singer/songwriter Lhasa de Sela, who has a thriving solo career and has collaborated with the likes of the Tindersticks and Nick Cave. Constellation Records recording artist Elizabeth Anka Vajajick sings on “Billy the Kid,” and Katie Moore is absolutely stunning on “Billy the Kid (part II)”.

Overview Holding the torch high in today’s garage rock revival, Vancouver duo The Pack A.D. strikes with a raw, hell-torn, blues-rock swagger that is equally contemplative and unflinching. The Pack A.D. is a duo, but do not expect a stripped-down outfit. The Pack A.D. is two women, but do not expect “girly” music. The Pack A.D. blends traditional blues and rock with a focus on rhythm guitar, solid drum lines, and singing straight from the gut. With a full sound, The Pack A.D. is both haunting and irresistibly foot stomping. Becky Black’s voice has the feel of a hot, whiskey-soaked night. Maya Miller’s drums fill out a restrained yet loose sound, just waiting on a snowfall … and that’s just the way they like it. Tintype, their debut album, is 17 tracks of Black and Miller rockin’ out and handing out their blues the way they know best—loud, edgy, and unforgiving.

Press Quotes “Brain Police is definitely one of Iceland’s greatest bands—one of my favorites. The music is driven by magnificent force and great personal charisma.” — Jónsi Birgisson, Sigur Rós “Veteran rockers Brain Police return with their fourth studio album … more guitar heavy than past albums without losing their distinctive stoner-rock sound. The band is as tight as Baden-Powell’s Boy Scout knots, especially the connection between drummer Jónbi and bass player Höddi … a good, solid, rock album.” — The Grape Vine Online “If you like Kyuss and especially Unida, then this is a band you for sure need to hear … a fantastic stoner rock sound.” — Lowcut

Overview Based in Reykjavik, the men of Brain Police are Icelandic citizens with the souls of American rock gods. Fueled by a desire to play dirty, kick-ass rock and roll, BP rose like a comet from relative obscurity to become one of Iceland’s biggest rock acts. It all began back in 1998 when Jón Björn Ríkarosson, Gunnlaugur Lárusson, and Hörour Stefánsson got together and started jamming some seriously heavy tunes. Very quickly, the boys realized they had something special going on. They snagged a name from the Frank Zappa catalog and began honing their skills by assaulting the local touring circuit. The year 2000 saw the release of their mightily impressive debut Glacier Sun, which was followed by more savage touring. Amazed by what they heard, Icelandic label Sena snapped up Brain Police in 2003, and over the next four years released three more albums of BP’s down-and-dirty Icelandic stoner rock. Each successive album brought the boys more fame in their native country, not to mention several Top 10 radio hits. In 2004 they released their third full-length, Electric Fungus, and shared the stage with Metallica, playing to more than 18,000 fans. In 2005 they embarked on their first tour outside of Iceland, expanding their legend and leaving a wake of awestruck crowds across Europe. Small Stone is proud to add Brain Police to its roster of world-class, kick-ass rock and roll bands. Beyond the Wasteland is a dense, thick smorgasbord of riffs that truly showcases the band’s growth.

Overview

Dominique Grimaud Les Quatres Directions Genre: Avant Rock Label: Locust Music CD: LST 105 Price Code: M (SRP $14.99) Jewel Case 5% PREORDER DISCOUNT NOT AVAILABLE IN CANADA

Dominique Grimaud is a hidden treasure of France’s psych, free rock, electronic, and jazz improv scenes. From his role as a founding member of the legendary psych/krautrock-inspired French act Camizole to his equally celebrated no wave/new wave duo Video-Aventures— whose groundbreaking music has been viewed as a precursor to the sound of Stereolab—to his jaw-dropping audio visual performance installations and live performances with celebrated performer Colleen, Grimaud has spent his entire life exploring the musical fringes of the French underground. With Les Quatres Directions, Grimaud emerges with his first release in nearly a decade, a whirlwind mind-altering long-form microgroove composition of grand proportions that hearkens back to the expanded audio visoneering and spiritualism of ’60s electronic music luminaries from Stockhausen to Ramon Sender. Here, Grimaud combines the otherworldly synth effects of his moog, EMS Synthi AKS, and Sequential Circuit Prophet with the hairy electric guitar bravado of his Fender strat and shamanic chanting into a celestial homemade orchestra. Les Quatres Directiones pays homage to the culture of the American Indians of the Great Plains. This culture is deeply rooted in the themes of the circle and the cardinal points they call the four winds. The whole piece evokes the both outside world of the Four Elements (water, air, earth, fire) and the inner world (heart, mind, body, spirit).

Overview Jed Speare is a crossover artist who has been working in sound, video, and performance for over thirty years. Sound Works 1982–1987 reflects his uniquely expressive practice of musique concrète-like analogue sound/field recording, editing, and mixing during that era. In 1982, Smithsonian Folkways issued his sound documentary LP Cable Car Soundscapes. Throughout the early ’80s, he recorded with San Francisco groups Research Library (appearing on the legendary Red Spot compilation), Ultrasheen, and Appliances. This 2-CD set collects five of Speare’s long-form compositions for the first time. Splicing together sources into towering movements used for stage and screen, these two hours of music take you to the heart of pure sound. nail welcomes RERUM NOVARUM to its roster! This fledgling record label, founded by Stephen Guidry (The Cassettes), does not have any pretensions that it is doing something “new,” but rather is attempting to reflect a very old mentality that there should be as little difference as possible between a label and its artist members.

Overview The first release from Rerum Novarum, On the Moments We Share is a somewhat brief foray into the music of Jack Francis. Having made music in the San Francisco area for the past decade, Francis began working on several projects, including honing his solo home recordings, working with a three-person “rock” group, and writing and recording a rock opera. This album is of the first of these: home-brewed songs that are paradoxically complex in their simplicity and as intimate as they are fantastical. On the Moments We Share plays like a song cycle on friendship and solitude: guitar and voice backed by a soundtrack of Conn organ, acoustic bass, marching band percussion, and the occasional triangle.

Overview This is the first full-length album by Austin punk rockers The Ape Shits, a great band made up of Austin scene veterans whose previous bands include The Reclusives, The Nervous Exits, and The Dirty Sweets. The album is lo-fi at its best, crude and loud and exciting just like punk rock should be. In fact, it’s reminiscent of Killed By Death-era punk rock. The album will serve as a great introduction to a ripping band that is quickly gaining a name for their chaotic, frenzied live show.

Time changes, layered guitars, and a generally expanded musical vocabulary make American Matador’s better moments a true step forward for an already excellent band … and when the grand finale arrives, and drummer Dan Reinholdt’s kit explodes like fireworks, any conceivable doubt disintegrates: American Matador is an awesome record.” — Pitchfork [8.0]

In Spring 2004, Michael Nau and Clinton Jones put together a collection of songs that were, perhaps, intended to be placed on an old, dusty shelf for years to come—until Baltimore label Fall Records kindly offered to release the songs as the band’s debut. Shortly thereafter, Page France began performing live and recording numerous demos, and has since created a substantial following that continues to grow daily. “A rueful and whimsical offering that balances beauty and melody with skill and reverence.” — Splendid

In work ranging from lo-fi folk to free improvisation to fullon noise rock to musique concrète to trance to jazz to blues to theatrical sound art, Shelly Blake’s musical life has been nothing if not eclectic. “With Discourse and Correspondence, Blake has offered us an innovative and unique collection of dark songs … from traditional to avant-garde, Blake’s compositions, while often simple and straightforward, run the gamut and leave little room to question his dexterity.” — Urban Pollution

Originally formed in early 2003 when both members still lived in North Dakota, In Ink Please is a lo-fi indie pop duo on independent Baltimore label Fall Records. “In Ink Please— one girl, one boy, and a pop sensibility to make any Saddle Creek band jealous. North Dakota never sounded this good … In Ink Please gives you music that would play well at a local coffee house or opening at a Bright Eyes concert. Expect big things.” — UpBeetMusic

The Foliage is an electric/acoustic/experimental/folk trio from North Dakota made up of college students who met at band camp and began working together because of a mutual love of Neutral Milk Hotel. They are currently working on new material and their second full-length release. “The Foliage is certainly more electronically based, often fusing bleeps and burps of samples with cute vocals and melodic strumming.” — Smother

A great indie split CD! Each band performs a cover of a popular indie rock song: Hum’s “Very Old Man” and Neutral Milk Hotel’s “Naomi.” “Really great lo-fi songs that are both simple and complete. In Ink Please is a great girl/guy band and could probably beat up the White Stripes. The Foliage plays indie pop with electronic elements. Occasionally, they channel the beats of Björk and the vocal stylings of Liz Phair. Recommended!” — AMP

Combining carefully crafted compositions, tight arrangements, and freely improvised passages, the Phil Mosberg Quartet represents some of the best that the young Chicago free jazz scene has to offer. Their debut album, Forest Through the Trees, is a dizzying display of high-octane playing mixed with elegant, moody passages—all delivered with the kind of energy that you’ve come to expect from Chicago jazz. Features Phil Mosberg (guitar, compositions), Jon Irabagon (tenor sax, alto sax, clarinet), Nate Bakkum (bass), and Vance Okraszewski (drums).

Phil Mosberg and Marta Tennae (a.k.a. Jeremy Barnes of Bablicon and Neutral Milk Hotel) spent one inspired afternoon creating this extemporaneous document. At times delicate and raucous, the pair of improvisers never loses sight of the goal of communication with each other as well as with the listener. With two extended improvisations and four short works, the duo explores a range of emotions from raging free jazz to barely audible intensities. Features Phil Mosberg (electric, acoustic, and prepared guitars) and Marta Tennae (drum set, electronics).

On their second release (and first for Solitaire), Dave Rempis (Vandermark 5) leads a trio of young players through a workout of quiet textural pieces, grooving jazz tunes, and expressionist romps. The band uses their original compositions as springboards for their improvisations, combining the rhythmic sensibilities of the American jazz and free jazz traditions with the more abstract spaces frequently associated with European improvisers. Features Dave Rempis (saxophones), Jason Ajemian (bass), and Tim Daisy (drums).

A little older, a little wiser, but no less intense or ferocious. The band picks up where its debut left off, running through a set that recalls the jazz tradition while also expanding on it. The group’s sound has matured, but still contains the edge and excitement that keeps them at the forefront of experimental modern jazz. Features Phil Mosberg (guitar, compositions), Jon Irabagon (tenor sax, alto sax, clarinet), Nate Bakkum (bass), and Vance Okreszewski (drums).
