FLAT DUO JETS TWO HEADED COW

Press Quotes “Nobody plays rock ‘n’ roll with as much raw and naked passion as Chapel Hill, NC’s Dexter Romweber … the godfather of this generation’s roots-rock guitar/drum renaissance.” — Baltimore City Paper “Much has been said about rockabilly roots-rocker Dexter Romweber over the years, both positive and negative, and sorting fact from fiction is no easy undertaking. Words like ‘crazy,’ ‘possessed,’ ‘frenzied,’ and ‘demented’ get thrown around quite a bit. But so do words like ‘authentic,’ ‘visionary,’ ‘genuine,’ and ‘genius’ … What distinguished this band from other retro outfits is that the Flat Duo Jets were not really retro at all. While their music was certainly inspired by the rock-n-roll of the 1950s, one got the feeling that nothing was calculated … This was the genuine article. This music was alive and well.” — Perfect Sound Forever

“That’s no greasy middle-aged man, that’s Dexter Romweber, a greasy younger cat from Chapel Hill, North Carolina whose hillbilly guitar and soulful pipes recapture the primitive off-the-cuff brilliance of early rockabilly (as in Jerry Lee Lewis, not the Stray Cats). While other fans of the old stuff simply try to replicate the past, Flat Duo Jets … somehow become the real thing, displaying nary a hint of nostalgia.” — Trouser Press

Selling Points • First album of unreleased Flat Duo Jets music in several years! • Liner notes by Neko Case, JD Wilkes, Tony Gayton, and others. • A companion piece to the acclaimed documentary released last year. • Cross-promotion of album with documentary screenings. • Dexter Romweber tours extensively and is working on an all-star album to be released in 2008. • Press and new media promotion by Press Darling PR. • Ads with various regional publications.

Overview Two Headed Cow is a companion piece to the acclaimed documentary released last year. The album contains live tracks recorded in 1986, before the Flat Duo Jet’s first full-length album was released years later. Two Headed Cow features seventeen scalding tracks as well as liner notes by Neko Case, director Tony Gayton, and others.

“Watching Dexter Romweber play guitar is like witnessing some private ritual: his soul seems to spill out with every ravaged, blistering chord and abruptly delicate arpeggio.” — New York Times

Selling Points • DVD total run time approx 60 min. Region free. • New rare interviews with iconic avant jazz luminaries Marion Brown, Roswell Rudd, John Tchicai, Alan Silva, Burton Greene, Joseph Jarman, Baikida Carroll, William Parker, Daniel Carter, Matthew Shipp, and Susie Ibarra. • Includes rare live performances by Denis Charles, Glenn Spearman, Wilber Morris, Joseph Jarman, Peter Brötzmann, John Tchicai, Sun Ra & His Arkestra, Other Dimensions In Music, Baikida Carroll, Reggie Workman, and more. • Selected music from John Coltrane, Albert Ayler, New York Art Quintet, and Free Form Improvisation Ensemble. • Radio campaign will target college and independent stations. • Review copies submitted to numerous indie/avant publications.

Overview Inside Out in the Open is an hour-long documentary about a form of jazz popularly known as free jazz. Free-form jazz, also known as the “avant-garde jazz,” burst on the scene in the early ’60s, led by Ornette Coleman and Cecil Taylor. It vastly extended the boundaries in rhythm, sound, and harmonics, stressing collective improvisation with an expansive openness and deep personal emotion. The release of Inside comes hot on the heels of the major ten-part jazz series by Ken Burns, which was criticized for giving little attention to jazz after 1960, and for being critical of the genre of “free jazz.” With only a small amount of media available on this development in jazz, Inside Out in the Open is a welcome contribution, giving overdue respect to these musical artists. Director Alan Roth is a former career postal worker, a labor/political activist, and an artist. Inside is his debut feature documentary. His second documentary, now in production, will focus on the New York Art Quartet.

PRESS QUOTES “One of the rootsiest sets so far in the Ethiopiques series—a batch of tracks that have a much more ethnographic feel than you might guess from the ‘orchestra’ in the group’s name! Although Orchestra Ethiopia flourished during a great modern age of music in their homeland, they were actually dedicated to reviving traditional styles and bringing them to a much larger, younger audience—in modes that are often heavy on percussion, group vocals, and eerie, otherworldly lines on wooden flutes. Although the group recorded a number of albums under the direction of Tesfaye Lemma, the CD features mostly previously unissued recordings by the orchestra—offering up an even rarer slice of their music.” — Dusty Groove

SELLING POINTS • The newest volume of this renowned serie! • Features liner notes in English and French. 23 tracks present over 75 minutes of music.

Overview The story of Orchestra Ethiopia (1963–1975) is unusual and compelling in more ways than one. Just as modern music was reaching the peak of its excellence and popularity, Orchestra Ethiopia’s unlikely undertaking, traditional music acquired a legitimacy that the times had tended to deprive it of. Between the coup d’état (December 1960) and the revolution (1974), Ethiopia was combining both the end of an empire and the “golden age” of its music.

Jennifer Gentle A New Astronomy CD: SPL 13 Price Code: Q

Overview Finally, the long-awaited re-release of The Wrong Cage, the super-freaky acid rock album that introduced Italian psych-pop mavericks Jennifer Gentle to the world and lead to their subsequent Sub Pop signing. Originally self-released in late 2002 on their own imprint Sillyboy Records, The Wrong Cage saw the young Italian quartet join forces with Kawabata Makoto (legendary Japanese guitar god and leader of Acid Mothers Temple) for a live album that captured the band at its most ferocious. The result was over 30 minutes of wonderful sonic carnage: two long, ultra-heavy guitar freakouts plus an eerily beautiful solo sarangi track played by Makoto. All in all, this is a must for fans of heavy, guitar-driven, psychedelic avant rock. Long out of print, The Wrong Cage is now available again with the addition of a lo-fi, 18-minute version of “Bring Them.”

Press Quotes “As in traditional Japanese music, much is made of the power of silence, the resonance of decaying tones, and the weight of the suspenseful interval.” — Ptolemaic Terrascope

Overview The second full-length album from Italy’s Painting Petals On Planet Ghost, Fallen Camellias is a tribute to one of Japan’s greatest poets. Yosano Akiko’s work in the early 1900s is considered a manifesto of Japanese Romanticism. Imagine Vashti Bunyan or early Marianne Faithful singing sweet melodies in Japanese, and you have an idea of the musical and poetic universe of Painting Petals On Planet Ghost. Ramona Ponzini’s singing comes from the use of selected original poems in Japanese along with Ponzini’s own soft, enchanting wordless style. The songs are built on acoustic guitar melodies composed by Maurizio Opalio, and are made of the same pure, melancholic essentiality as legendary Nick Drake. After contributing arrangements of a most ecstatic nature, Roberto Opalio played the role of producer, searching not only for an aesthetic but for an emotional ideal of perfection. In the dead of winter, let Fallen Camellias be your warm blanket.

CHINA FORBES

’78

Press Quotes

“Forbes has a fine, velvety voice.” — Stephen Brookes, Washington Post “China Forbes has a clear and precise instrument, the perfect voice to convey cosmopolitan air.” — Nate Chinen, New York Times

Selling Points • Front cover sticker: Long anticipated solo album from the voice of Pink Martini. “China Forbes is captivating.” — The New Yorker • Encompassing elements of folk, rock, and country, tied neatly together by China Forbes’ unaffected voice, ’78 is a surprising, diverse dose of pop perfection poised to reach an entirely new audience. • Full media and radio campaigns to be executed surrounding release. • Produced by Gregg Williams (Sheryl Crow, The Wallflowers, Pete Droge, Dandy Warhols). • Charlotte Caffey (The Go-Go’s) co-wrote “When This Is Over.” • Features Eric Matthews (Empyrean Records/Sub Pop) and Eric Earley (Blitzen Trapper).

Overview For ten years, China Forbes has toured the world as lead singer of the celebrated “little orchestra” Pink Martini. Invited to join the band by Harvard classmate Thomas M. Lauderdale, Forbes set aside a blossoming career as a singer-songwriter to front the ensemble full-time. Praised as “an unpretentious pitch-perfect chanteuse” by John Pareles of the New York Times, Forbes has grown into an accomplished performer and built a devoted, diverse fan base around the globe. On her long-awaited solo album, Forbes dusts off her guitar and returns to her roots, displaying strikingly personal songs in a style all her own. Filled with intimate stories of love, loneliness, friendship, and alienation, Forbes recorded the album in her hometown with producer/drummer Gregg Williams (Sheryl Crow, The Wallflowers, Dandy Warhols). The stolen sessions allowed Forbes to work discreetly when not on the road with Pink Martini, resulting in a true expression of relaxed creativity. While ’78 is a noted departure from the sounds of Pink Martini, fans will recognize the autobiographical “Hey Eugene,” appearing here as it was originally written. Backed by Gregg Williams and Eric Earley (Blitzen Trapper), with cameos by Eric Matthews and Phil Baker (Pink Martini), Forbes plays a variety of instruments—including guitar, piano, bass, harmonium, and Wurlitzer— making this record clearly and uniquely hers.

• The first album by Matana Roberts with her Chicago quartet. • Features Jeff Parker (Tortoise), Josh Abrams (Town and Country, Prefuse 73), and Frank Rosaly (Ken Vandermark’s Crisis Ensemble). Fred Anderson appears as a guest player on the “Birdhouse” tracks. • Engineered by John McEntire (Tortoise) and produced by Vijay Iyer. • Full print and internet media campaign in the US by Allegro Media. • Ads with The Wire.

Overview Central Control International is pleased to present The Chicago Project by Matana Roberts! Matana (pronounced Mah-tah-Na) is a dynamic saxophonist, composer, and improviser who exposes the mystical roots and spiritual traditions of African American creative expression in her music. A Chicago native, she was fortunate enough to be surrounded by elder musicians who showed her by distinct example the importance of listening to one’s personal creative voice while at the same time using the profound and layered traditions of jazz and improvised music to act as her creative guide, not her creative definer. Their mentorship has inspired her true artistic individuality.

The Chicago Project is Roberts’ homage to her hometown, featuring compositions and conceptual material composed by her and interpreted by close friends and supporters: bassist Josh Abrams (Town and Country, Prefuse 73), guitarist Jeff Parker (Tortoise, Chicago Underground Trio), and drummer Frank Rosaly (Ken Vandermark’s Crisis Ensemble). The album was produced and engineered respectively by pianist Vijay Iyer and Tortoise’s John McEntire, and features a very special guest saxophonist in the form of Fred Anderson, one of the founding members of the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians (AACM). An expert improviser, Roberts’ playing can be heard on recordings as disparate as Godspeed You! Black Emperor’s Yanqui UXO, Sabir Mateen’s Shapes Textures and Sounds Ensemble, Daniel Givens’ Day Clear and First Dark, and more—as well as works with Savath and Savalas (a.k.a. Guillermo Scott Herren/Prefuse 73). She has also played alongside such musical and artistic luminaries as Roscoe Mitchell, Oliver Lake, Marty Erhlich, Eugene Chadbourne, Henry Grimes, Butch Morris, Reg E. Gaines, George Lewis, Nicole Mitchell, Robert Barry, Joe Maneri, Miya Masaoka, Beans, Steve Lacy, Liberty Ellman, Hill Greene, Vernon Reid, Jayne Cortez, Bill T. Jones, and Savion Glover, among many others. Matana Roberts currently lives and works in New York and is a member of the AACM.

“Ms. Roberts isn’t just mildly curious to expand her medium: she seems driven to do it.” — New York Times 12

PREss quotes “Bishop’s playing is astonishing; he makes more clatter and bliss with an acoustic guitar than the [Sun City Girls] did on the originals, plugged in … Bishop’s solo stuff, though, has focused more on craft than on innovation, assimilating styles he’s already gone over in his past, showing his ability to wander through a guitar with confidence and direction even when he’s improvising … doesn’t sound like nothing you’ve ever heard before, it sounds like good things you’ve already heard plenty of times played with an impressive amount of skill.” — Pitchfork

* NOT FINAL ARTWORK

“Far be it from Seattle to take for granted that a true guitar master lives here. Yes, an acoustic virtuoso who is conversant with ragas, flamenco, Appalachian folk, Gypsy swing, and the mystical improvisational techniques of Robbie Basho, Sandy Bull, and the immortal John Fahey. This is a man who, like those great players before him, has trained his instrument to be multilingual, to switch tongues at his command, to do what he tells it to do. His name is Richard Bishop.” — Seattle Weekly

Overview Official DVD release of Sir Richard Bishop’s cracked film God Damn Religion with a bonus audio CD of the quasi soundtrack Elektronika Demonika, originally issued by Locust as a vinyl-only escapade in 2006. For centuries, man has used organized religion to control the hearts and minds (not to mention the pocketbooks) of the ignorant masses. Well, Sir Richard Bishop has decided he would like a piece of the action. This film is a diabolical experiment in hypnotic mind control—a phantasmagoric presentation of demonic and divine imagery, meticulously assembled and designed to put the viewer into an altered state of darkened awareness. Includes original music from Elektronika Demonika, as well as unreleased material.

Press Quotes :

“An outlandishly good CD and one of the best local debuts in recent memory … Picture Squarepusher and Enya collaborating on songs for In Utero.” — Boston Phoenix “Hooray For Earth plays an exciting blend of raw rock & roll with keyboard and laptop elements that work together and make you say, ‘Fuck this is good.’ And then you like them forever.” — Weekly Dig “Styles collide in a fuzzy mash-up. Press Quotes “If Sufjan Stevens were to abandon the high concepts and embrace his pop sensibility, the result might not be too far from Josh Ottum’s debut.” — Uncut

Selling Points • National tour planned for 2008. • Recent month-long residency at Tangiers in Los Angeles. • Publicity by The Musebox.

Overview Like labelmate and current buzz boy Luke Temple, Josh Ottum has spent much of his life honing his mind-blowing songwriting craft in a tiny bedroom. Bolstered by semi-hollowbody guitars, old keyboards, dry drums, and a hundred multi-tracked voices, Ottum’s exquisite pop songs shine like polished furniture through a window on a crisp fall morning. A veteran team of players joins him, including Sufjan Stevens multi-instrumentalists James McAlister and Casey Foubert. A horde of five drummers builds a powerful rhythm section, and a complete horn section adds raw, stirring soul. Listeners will recognize the influence of The Flaming Lips, Grandaddy, and Phoenix, but don’t think for a second that this is a record of cheap rip-offs and retro throwbacks.

Overview After a couple of years, Beequeen is ready to present their latest album, further maturing their sound from The Bodyshop (also on Important Records). More song-based, this album features new vocals by Olga Wallis (with some backing by Freek Kinkelaar). These are well-rounded pop songs in some places, but Beequeen never forgets to put in some strange element (without leaping into the dark alley of pointless experiment). Orchestral in “The Illogical Song,” collage-esque in “The Edie Three Step,” or a rhythm machine in “The Honeythief,” Beequeen does it all with great care and ease. This album features the help of Barry Gray, former (and first) guitarist of The Legendary Pink Dots, and would not have been the album it is without the invaluable production skills of Erik Drost.

Overview Basilica is Rameses III’s eagerly anticipated follow-up to their acclaimed releases Honey Rose (Important Records), Matanuska (Music Fellowship), and Night of the Ankou (Type). It is a double album of live recordings of new Rameses material accompanied by re-interpretations of those same recordings by contemporaries Robert Horton, Keith Berry, Gregg Kowalsky, and Astral Social Club. Minimalist sound sculptor Keith Berry rolled out the slow-motion waterfalls of “Basilica” and gave the album an early focus while also providing inspiration for the glacial artwork. Gregg Kowalsky played the “Rose Blood” remix as part of his own performance at the OVERLAP 02 event in San Francisco. Subtle textures were pushed way into the red when noise veteran Neil Campbell sandblasted the original tracks into the howling mirror of Astral Social Club, and Robert Horton was kind enough to allow Rameses III to remix his remix, leading to the gentle trumpet curlicues and electronic birdsong entwining the original drone of “After the Red Rose.”

Overview Glass Forest is a highly listenable starting point for any newcomers curious about Daniel Menche’s vast discography. It is also, according to Menche, the last CD he will release. From now on he’ll be releasing his music on LP only, or on DVD to accompany films he has worked on. Recorded in Winter 2005, Glass Forest displays a glistening sound world finely textured with the most delicate of raw organic sound and chaotic electronic noise. Not as extreme as Menche’s previous work, a more subtle presence can be heard here. Subsonic bass drums crawl underneath massive sheets of glass-like sound, layering infinitely into a thick, dense forest of delicate noise. For fans of both Daniel Menche’s ambient work and his louder violent work, Glass Forest fits exactly right in the middle of these two polarities.
