Overview
Ch’hom Nimol: vocals Ethan Holtzman: Farfisa organ Zac Holtzman: guitar, vocals David Ralicke: horns Paul Dreux Smith: drums, percussion Senon Gaius Williams: bass
Fronted by Cambodian pop star Ch’hom Nimol, who sings in Khmer, Los Angeles sextet Dengue Fever blends the rhythms of sixties Cambodian pop–heavily influenced by American surf, rock, and early psychedelic garage bands–with their own eclectic mix of American and international styles. Unlike the world music bands of the late eighties, Dengue Fever is more concerned with a universal groove and breaking down musical barriers than with notions of authenticity. There are echoes of Bollywood soundtracks, Ethiopian soul, American R&B, Cambodian folk, Spaghetti Western weirdness, and girl-group angst in the mix, but the resulting concoction is the band’s own. On Escape from Dragon House, the sound is denser, thicker, and richer than on the group’s 2003 self-titled debut. Escape from Dragon House is also darker, both musically and lyrically, with a fully-realized style that melts all of the band’s influences into one voice that is pure Dengue Fever.
Press Quotes “If you can imagine a band where a Cambodian beauty queen shares the stage with Rasputin, Barry White, Allen Ginsberg, Michael Hutchence, and Brian Wilson, you’d have a pretty good idea of the group Dengue Fever.” – L.A.Times “Her voice is swathed in reverb, becoming instantly mythic.” – The Wire “The culture clash inherent to this band gives its debut a dynamic flair.” – Time Out New York “Dengue Fever is at the vanguard of an emerging global pop sensibility, making familiar yet eerily unique music.” – KEXP

Overview
Josh Cohen: sax, vocals Ryan Scully, Bailey Smith: guitar, vocals Steve Calandra: bass Mike Andrepont: drums Rick Shaw: tuba, trombone
Morning 40 Federation is a ragtag team of New Orleans musicians that creates a rock ‘n’ roll sound unlike any other. It is deeply rooted in the New Orleans style, yet the groove and soul conjure up Detroit circa 1975 while the rock feels like something out of New York in the early part of this century. The band’s live shows are the stuff of legend, and the members cannot walk down the streets of the still-surviving New Orleans without Beatles-esque fan acknowledgement. This new album was the last to be recorded in New Orleans before Hurricane Katrina. Like the band, it is a survivor that carries with it deeper qualities than just fun music to party to … although that is there as well (it would not be Morning 40 without it). Ticonderoga is more primal than any of their previous releases, and shakes all genres up with a refreshing punk attitude.
Press Quotes “Ticonderoga is a ribald blast of drunken revelry in the flamboyant form of pimped-out funk rock grooves and soulful Super Fly schmaltz. It’s a musical fuzzy-dice Mardi Gras celebration.” — Under the Volcano “Morning 40 Federation lets its freak flag fly fantastically on Ticonderoga … New Orleans’ irreverent musical tradition will outlive Katrina just fine.” — Prefix “Lean and low-slung … as crudely funny as it is musically tight.” — New York Times “These Ninth Ward convivialists have finally made a recording that captures some of the bacchanalian madness of their live performances … calling this feel-good music wouldn’t do the band justice. It’s a wonder this stuff is even legal.” — Playboy
Selling Points · Last Morning 40 Federation CD recorded in New Orleans before Hurricane Katrina. · New CD produced at Piety Street Studios with legendary producer Mark Bingham (R.E.M.). · Extensive Southern US tours. · Inspired by Tom Waits, The Pogues, and The Replacements. · Named a Blender Editors Pick, Best CD by Times Picayune & Offbeat, Best Rock Band in New Orleans at the Big Easy Awards, and Best Unsigned Band in New Orleans by Citysearch. · National and local tour press handled by It’s Alive! Overview
Baby Teeth’s new album, The Simp, proves yet again that bedroom pop and huge hooks belong together. The band has been compared to a host of legendary pop eccentrics: Elvis Costello, Andy Pratt, and Queen. But it’s Baby Teeth’s unique appropriation of classic rock icons that sets it apart from other indie-pop acts. The new album’s lavish arrangements nod to the pop of the sixties and seventies, while lyrics are direct and emotionally bare. Meticulously crafted with outside producer Blue Hawaii (a member of Bablicon, Need New Body, and Icy Demons), The Simp counters every big pop chorus with a left-of-center twist. An album of remarkable refinement, The Simp will only take a few spins to carry you away … or take you back, as the case may be.
Press Quotes “Packs enough earthshaking riffs, goofball showboating, and anthemic bluster to fatten the entire fifth grade at the School of Rock.” – Pitchfork “We’ve never played with a band that sounded so much like Queen, although they’re not quite that batty.” – Eleanor Friedberger of The Fiery Furnaces in Pitchfork “Indie pop that sounds like the Silver Jews on seventies AM radio.” – Harp “A joyous mix of roller-derby-themed dance funk, MIDI-enhanced eighties pop, and twangy disco rock.” – Paste “A welcome addition to Chicago’s roster of rock bands … combines soulful R&B with kisses of seventies jam rock–a different sound when compared to the band’s peers in The Changes or The M’s.” – New City Chicago
Selling Points • Features members of Bobby Conn and the Glass Gypsies, All City Affairs, and The Detholz. • Upcoming full-page feature in March issue of Harp. • Title track is part of Pitchfork’s exclusive “Infinite Mixtape.” A positive review will run in February. • 2007 US tour booked by Satellite Booking Agency. • PR by Riot Act Media. • Featured on the Vice CD & DVD compilations; featured music video on Insound. • Ads will run in Vice, Under the Radar,Wonkavision, Arthur, Big Takeover, Skyscraper, Copper Press, Status, Modern Fix, Pitchfork, and more.

Nadja Touched Genre: Avant Metal Label: Alien8 Recordings CD: ALI 67 Price Code: M NOT AVAILABLE IN CANADA
Featured Artists Overview
Aidan Baker: guitar, vocals Leah Buckareff: bass, backing vocals
The avant metal genre has really taken off over the last couple of years, and while some projects may suffer from its over-saturation, Nadja’s versatility will allow it to escape this fate. Aidan Baker, the project’s founder, is an insanely prolific musician under his own name, releasing solo works for such prestigious labels as Germany’s Die Stadt as well countless CD and CD-R releases all over the world. Leah Buckareff rounds out the band on bass guitar and backing vocals. While credit is owed to the likes of pioneering legends Earth and current kingpins Sunn O))) & Boris for defining the genre, Nadja takes more inspiration from artists hailing from the dark ambient and electronica fields. Passages on this latest release can be compared to saturated wall-of-ambient-noise perfected by the likes of Tim Hecker and Fennesz or Justin K. Broadrick’s Jesu project. Like earlier release Truth Becomes Death, Touched is ambient music being pushed to its breaking point, yet the overall feel is slightly gentler. Parts of the album feature the use of clean, undistorted vocals–rather unique in the genre–hinting at the sounds of such bands as Codeine, Swans, or Joe Preston’s Thrones project. In a very short time, Nadja has established itself as a band to watch due to its work ethic, prolific output, and live performances. In the past year, Nadja has managed to tour with (or open for) ISIS, Khanate, Tim Hecker, Troum, Fear Falls Burning, Helios Creed, and The End, among others.
Press Quotes “Imagine Jesu, but dosed to the gills on Prozac, a shiny happy Godfleshian dirge, or a My Bloody Valentine riff looped and repeated forever, underpinned by some Can drum loop at 16 rpm, or a Teenage Filmstars 45 played at 33. This is epic ultradoom metal, but with the metal replaced by soft billowy clouds of fuzzy distortion, the howling fury twisted into dreamlike tranquility, the blasting beats pulled apart and sprinkled here and there like percussive raindrops. This is as soft and pretty as a dirge-y drone can get while still retaining its inherent doomic mass. Utter and absolute loveliness drenched in a thick patina of crushing heaviness. Impossible but perfect.” – Aquarius Records
Selling Points • One of the forerunners of the avant metal genre. • Follow-up to 2005 debut Truth Becomes Death. • College radio mailing.

Featured Artists Overview
Glenn Jones: acoustic 6 & 12-string guitars, resonator guitar
Since 1989, Glenn Jones has led Boston’s “avant-garage” instrumental rock band Cul de Sac, whose musical adventures are documented on nine albums to date. A thirty+-year devotee of the so-called “Takoma school,” Jones has written extensively on two of the steel-string guitar’s leading lights: John Fahey, with whom he was friends for nearly twenty-five years, and Robbie Basho. In 2004, Jones stepped out of the long shadow cast by Takoma’s guitar visionaries and offered his own “new possibility”–This Is the Wind That Blows It Out, an impeccable album of acoustic 6 & 12-string beauty released to rave review. Against Which the Sea Continually Beats, Jones’s second album, is an indisputable triumph of acoustic guitar composition, a reverential and innovative melding of sound and form. The eleven tunes on Against Which the Sea Continually Beats travel from Delta to Appalachia, from classical to a cinematic sort of folk sound in a language that is purely imbued in the artist’s own dialect. Graceful and subtle, resonating with confidence and power, Against Which the Sea Continually Beats is a masterpiece of “guitar soli” by a truly singular talent.
Press Quotes “Sensitivity and power that instantly communicates.” – Brainwashed “A lean and lively hound among the sheep.” – Bill Meyer, Dusted “His gorgeous, luminous settings are scored across a series of open tunings, which he threads with beautiful rolling melodies, his slide work sounding like the flutter of tiny metal butterflies.” – David Keenan, The Wire
Selling Points • Glenn Jones’s Cul de Sac is a long-running instrumental avant-rock band with ravenous cult status. • Anticipated follow-up to critically acclaimed debut. • Recently toured the US and Europe with Jack Rose, appeared both solo and with Cul de Sac at 2006’s Terrastock VI, and performed with the likes of Steffen Basho-Junghans, Max Ochs, Matt Valentine/Erika Elder, Peter Lang, Harris Newman, and James Blackshaw. • Jones contributed a track to the widely praised guitar anthology Imaginational Anthem Vol. 1 (Tompkins Square Records). • Jones penned the notes to many John Fahey reissues on Fantasy, and is curating the forthcoming Fahey 5XCD box set The Fonotone Years, slated for release on Revenant Records. • Full media campaign coordinated by Howlin’ Wuelf Media (Devendra Banhardt, Vetiver). • Radio promotion by AAM Sunday Service. • Ads will run in Arthur, The Wire, Signal to Noise, and Pitchfork.

Overview “Her fragile, intimate voice recalling fellow proud Midwesterner Conor Oberst, Lenee’ leads a Tulsa outfit that’s gaining renown for spare, deeply empathetic alt-folk tunes.” –CNET Download.com Autumn Shade is the nom de plume of Jes Lenee’, a stunning young songstress brimming with unbridled talent. Toting a satchelful of pensively beautiful tunes, Lenee’ possesses a voice as pristine as any your ears have heard in this lifetime. A classically trained piano prodigy, Lenee’ was penning songs at the age of eleven, many of which won award recognition. Ultimately seduced by the craft of songwriting, Autumn Shade is a marriage of her piano prowess and folk-inspired guitar strumming. Set to splash with their full-length debut Ezra Moon, Autumn Shade has concocted a fascinating foray into an ethereal yet emotionally raw netherworld. Ezra Moon is a unique sepia-toned microcosm that intertwines folk, chamber music, psychedelia, rock, and indie singer/songwriter. With additional instrumentation of violin, hammer dulcimer, and percussion–as well as a healthy penchant for sonic Autumn Shade experimentation–the sound is reminiscent of the female artists that helped define the 4AD sound. Overview
Sean Brooks: shortwave radio, guitar, vocals, keyboard, tenor sax, Korg MS2000 Josh Kempa: bass, vocals Chris Calvert: drums, vocals Reyna Kohl, John Mulvey: vocals
All of Minmae’s songs are facing west, toward the land of the dead. Not because the band has a fascination with the afterlife, but because, when the excavators pry open the tombs and hear the disparate sounds of this prolific band/concept, they will know that there was at least some pattern and meaning to it all. Songwriter Sean Brooks’s penchant for turning the caustic into works of morbid beauty is once again evident on Minmae’s most inspired and cohesive work to date. Following the success of 2006’s Le grand essor de la maison du monstre, Portland indie rockers Minmae return with a new album, a new line-up, and a new mission statement. 835, their ninth full-length (and third on Greyday Records), finds the band at the crossroads of experimental and pop, noise and rhythm, chaos and order. Recorded in the band’s hometown after spending four of the previous six months on the road, the fruits of a very spatially dispersed labor have culminated in a fourteen-song pop detour that documents Minmae at a peak, a phase, a transition, a beginning, and an end, all at once.
Press Quotes “Portland’s Minmae concocts bold, capable indie rock that’s as long on guitar power as it is on inventive arrangements … to put it simply, Minmae makes gold soundz for now people.” – All Music Guide “The move a few years back from San Diego to Portland was a good one for Minmae frontman Sean Brooks, whose dense, oldschool style of indie rock is often offset by moody pacings, atmospherics, and lyrical themes (imagine Smog writing less ironic songs for Pavement).” – CMJ NMM

Jon Crocker’s newest release has taken many years to complete. The amount of care is evident, with songs ranging from short to very long, the instrumentation from a solitary voice to an orchestra of moaning guitars, clanging pianos, and surging organ. The songs are passionate and well-crafted pieces dealing with frustration, fear, hope, celebration, and the loss of innocence. The concept of the album is very simple: there is a song for every day of the week, each of which is followed by a nocturne (an instrumental piece of night music). The songs are not about the days themselves, but aim to capture the feeling and character of each day. The album definitely falls on the experimental side of the fence, treading a fine line between rock ‘n’ roll, folk, and classical styles.

Ritchie Young: vocals, guitar, percussion/Peter Broderick: drums, violin, mandolin, saw, theremin, vocals/Jonathan Drews: bass, guitar, vocals/Laurel Simmons: piano, celeste, vocals/Heather Broderick: cello, piano, celeste, vocals/Evan B Harris: banjovi, celeste, accordion, melodica, vocals/Justin Ringle: trumpet, vocals/Jade Eckler: vocals/Amanda Lawrence: viola, vocals
Loch Lomond started as Ritchie Young’s solo recording project in 2003. With the help of engineer/producer Rob Oberdorder,Young crafted the first Loch Lomond album, When We Were Mountains (In Music We Trust Records). Over the next few years, Loch Lomond performed around Portland and the Pacific Northwest in various incarnations. Live performances ranged from Young by himself to a tenperson band. During this time, many different recording sessions took place in various studios and homes. These recordings were eventually compiled on an EP called Lament for Children in early 2006. In the latter half of 2006, Loch Lomond solidified into a nine-person band, and the group is now busy rehearsing, writing, and scheduling dates to record its second full-length album. Loch Lomond will be on the road between recording times, with some shows utilizing the full line-up and others as a condensed but equally powerful version of the band.
Press Quotes “The hopeless tone in Ritchie Young’s voice tells of a terrible life of unfortunate circumstances. Even the old Scottish folk song from which Loch Lomond takes its name is the story of a broken heart and the springtime weather that does nothing to heal it. It works, though, because Young’s voice–with its gloomy, morose manner–needs the subhuman relief that noise readily provides. Ultimately it is a record wallowing in its own despair as much as it is a record that took great, inspired care to make–and it’s definitely a record to avoid after a breakup.” – Rolling Stone “Heavy, melancholic, and truly a thing of beauty. Each song is wrapped around Ritchie Young’s distinctive lilt, the most beautiful vocal of any male singer in this city. Look out for ‘Virgin Mountain,’ which not only explores the idea of leveling towering, craggy masses, but probably could do so itself.” – Willamette Week “Slow, deliberate, and tense, Loch Lomond creates a dark yet pretty audio picture … sounds a bit like Smashing Pumpkins in their heartfelt moments … [but also] resembles a cross between Supertramp and Elliott Smith on the acoustic opening moments.” – All Music Guide HHHH

Overview
David Jerkovich has done something rare. Over the last three years, while variously working as a longshoreman and a touring band member, he has created a radiant jewel of an album in near obscurity. Well, okay, he is an outright sensation in Adelaide, Australia, and he recorded the imminently likable debut Keep Moving on Sunset Alliance, but damn! This is the kind of album that can cure today’s hypershort attention span the nation over. The songs just don’t get old. Why? It’s that je ne sais quois that beguiles every hopeful songwriter. Is Jerkovich the next Dylan or Bright Eyes or Springsteen? No. Does he have a magnetic, classic songwriting style? You bet. Does he have more raw musical talent in his pinky than most So-Cal hipsters have in their fashionably clad bodies? Probably. But Novi Split is not about differences. It is an olive branch. And for all its meticulous production, the songs still feel simple, reliable, and refreshing. Themes of infatuation, love, addiction, betrayal, co-dependence, and isolation are treated with tenderness and the clarity of hindsight. Jerkovich has performed as one half of Kind of Like Spitting, and is now a secret weapon in L.A.’s Ill Lit. He has learned a lot from traversing the country’s stages, and while his amiable demeanor is a foil for other songwriters, he holds his own songs close to the chest until they are 100% done.
Press Quotes “Distinctly potent pop nuggets. The songwriting is calm but deceptively intricate–the lyrics, meanwhile, are heartfelt and emotional. At times the band sounds like Guided By Voices, while at others they tend towards Sparklehorse tendencies.” – Indieville “Elliott Smith is gone, but Novi Split has skillfully taken his place as the new ‘great acoustic hope,’ returning honesty, passion, and skillful songwriting to the acoustic guitar.” – Independent Clauses “Novi Split prominently features two members of Kind of like Spitting, and while it’s clearly not exactly the same music, the general sound should be familiar to fans of the other band. It’s a similarly stripped-down style of nakedly emotional music–the kind of stuff that all the pop-punkers with shaggy hair have given such a bad name.” – In Your Ear

The band has rave-y, circular rhythms, as if Talking Heads, !!!, and Midnite Vultures-era Beck all met in a meth lab and threw a party. Dat’r is a two-person band with a laptop, keyboards, electric guitar, and live percussion. If you are the immovable object, they are the irresistible force … and they will win.
Press Quotes “Electro-funk two-piece Dat’r led four or five dozen sandaled and bare feet into literally dancing up a dust cloud while a fog machine covered the band in the back yard. Occasional old-school instruments like live cymbals kept the performance raw, as did Paul Alcott’s ability to vocally match an extremely high-pitched, electronically generated squeal, breaking away from his gadgets to shake a leg with a mic whenever possible.” – Willamette Week “See some of Portland’s most marketable exports … [including] openers Dat’r, whose music is appealingly infectious and air-headed, like a high-kick contest fueled by Sparks.” – Portland Mercury
Selling Points • Dat’r is two-thirds of the well-regarded Binary Dolls, who have released two lauded albums and toured extensively. • Dat’r will tour in Spring 2007. Overview “Hands-down one of our new wintry pop favorites.” – Seattle Weekly Night Canopy is the desolate, radiant concoction of Amy Blaschke and Pretty Girls Make Graves drummer Nick DeWitt. Live, they also add Jenny Jiménez, formerly of The Catch. The group’s songs are dusky and swell in a lucid dreaming way, holding you with Patsy Cline’s quaint isolation. Also present are remnants of Cat Power and Azure Ray’s stylistic tics. Live, Blaschke’s vocals cut with a songbird’s clarity as her partner DeWitt alternates between almost all the instruments onstage.

This collection of eleven songs composed by Matt Menovcik (Saeta) and produced by Kramer are brutally quiet and perfectly presented–a deftly assembled marriage of seventies-era Eno and Beck at his very best. The ultra-eroticism of Menovcik’s vocal performances form the bedrock of this collaboration, focused and drawn to a series of subtle points by Shimmy-Disc founder Kramer’s production genius. Although remembrances of Neu! and Joy Division will pepper the listener’s experience upon first listen, the graphic sound-poems found on Rope, Inc.’s haunting debut full-length find a haunting originality in both voice and production. With Menovcik recording his electric piano, vocals, and loops in Seattle and Kramer adding arrangements, instrumentation, and some of his most stunning guitar work in Florida, Songs of Love & War will keep the listener’s attention long past bedtime.
Selling Points • Matt Menovcik is the composer & singer for Saeta, produced by Steve Albini and Kramer. • Producer/arranger Kramer is ex-Bongwater, Galaxie 500, Low, Daniel Johnston. • Debut EP Is That All? released on Fish the Cat Records in October 2006. • Publicity by NAIL Media.

Overview “Jumps the fence of Rock & Roll High School, the ATX quartet bruising runaways all, shaving when The Donnas were still leading cheers.” – Austin Chronicle Sparkle Motion is a new band from Austin composed of former members of Slum City and The Applicators–great, female-fronted punk reminiscent of Nikki and the Corvettes on the sugary tracks and hardcore elements on other tracks. The album contains ten original songs and one cover, “Kill Someone You Hate” by Red Kross. A vinyl EP released in late 2006 provided a preview of this great album, and received very good press from Maximum Rock ‘n’ Roll, Now Wave, and the Austin Chronicle.

Overview “Absolutely beautiful and moving, at times soaring, at times hushed … this is a fantastic work.” – Delusions of Adequacy With vast cinematic scope, Norfolk & Western’s anticipated full-length The Unsung Colony leaps out of the speakers with an epic song cycle that winds up unprecedented peaks and cascades down fertile valleys, testing the limits of the band’s collective arrangements, creativity, and musicianship. From musical embers to sonic wildfires, these songs place a band already known for their dynamic range on a whole new level reserved for the likes of Pink Floyd and Camper Van Beethoven. The band has come into its own, and this is the landmark album that the recent EP hinted at: eclectic and ambitious, enthralling and intimate.

Overview
Take a step back to the boiling summer of 2006. The Fall had just successfully completed three out of sixteen US tour dates when suddenly, controversy struck. As Mark E. Smith and keyboardist/wife Eleni Poulou slept soundly in their Phoenix hotel, the band’s guitarists and drummer hopped on an international flight back to the UK in an angry huff. It’s still uncertain what happened in the desert that May, but whatever it was, it helped take The Fall in a refreshing new direction. Smith and Poulou decided to move on with the tour, a new group of backing musicians were dispatched (a group of Americans?!), and eventually the puzzle pieces fell into place. The tour continued, their scheduled recording session in L.A. was completed, and the end result was The Fall’s latest full length, Reformation Post T.L.C. Featuring twelve brand-new tunes set comfortably in angst-soaked garage rock mortar, Reformation Post T.L.C. stands as proof that it takes a lot more than some screwy controversy to stop the fate of Mark E. Smith. Emerging from working-class Manchester, The Fall formed in 1976 after vocalist and incomparably acid-tongued lyricist Mark E. Smith decided he wanted a more personal vessel for his words, ideas, and obsessions with literature. Many albums and member changes later, Mark E. Smith has lead The Fall into becoming what many critics consider to be the most prolific band of the British punk movement. With his philosophical wordplay, knowledge of appealing song structure, and bitterly controversial personality, Mark E. Smith has managed to front a band with not only a cult following, but an impressive record of success on both the UK and US charts.
Press Quotes “A furious rhythmic juggernaut of churning guitar, bass, and drums while the free association of images really sticks.” – Under the Radar “Overall The Fall remain, ever shockingly, in excellent form.” – Pitchfork “A brutal, head-banging rock beast.” – BBC
Selling Points • Enhanced CD includes live videos for “My Door,” “Scenario,” “Hungry Freaks Daddy,”and “Mountain Energei” (all from the Hiro Ballroom in NYC November 2006), as well as “Blindness” (taken from their Southpaw show in June 2006). • Received amazing pre-release coverage from Pitchfork, Spin, and Rolling Stone, all of which are greatly anticipating the new album. • 2005 track “Blindness” currently featured in Mitsubishi ad campaign. • Sold out almost every venue on last summer’s US tour, as well as the Hiro Ballroom during this year’s CMJ Marathon. • Press will be handled by Narnack and an outsourced publicity team. • College radio by AAM. • Ads will run in Magnet, Harp, Arthur, Bust, and more.

Jessica Rylan Interior Designs Genre: Experimental Label: Important Records CD: IPT 134 Price Code: P NOT AVAILABLE IN CANADA
Featured Artists Overview
Jessica Rylan: Serge Modular synth, various homemade synths
Jessica Rylan (you may know her better as Can’t) is finally releasing her first officially published instrumental work for synthesizer. Titled Interior Designs, these compositions are more “classic” in nature than her work as Can’t. Inspired by Pauline Oliveros, Eliane Radigue, Iannis Xenakis, and especially Thomas Lehn, Rylan confidently takes her place among these monumental artists with a collection of strikingly original pieces recorded on a Serge Modular in addition to analog synthesizers that Rylan built. Jessica Rylan is a sound artist and electronic musician who lives and works in the Boston area. She builds unique synthesizers for installations and live performance. Her music incorporates the intuition of folk music with the techniques of the avant-garde. Rylan was featured in the PBS documentary Greater Boston Arts in March 2003. She has created sound installations at the List Visual Arts Center at MIT, the Boston Center for the Arts, Harvard University, and the Berwick Research Institute. She earned an MFA in electronic music from Bard College and has received grants from the Penny McCall Foundation and LEF Foundation. She is currently a Research Affiliate at MIT’s Center for Advanced Visual Studies. Rylan has performed across the US, Eastern Canada, Scandinavia, and Western Europe. She has shared the stage with Thurston Moore, Wolf Eyes, Lightning Bolt, Emil Beaulieau, Prurient, Hrvatski, Magik Markers, Mouthus, Tim Barnes, Charalambides, Amps for Christ, and Chris Corsano.
Press Quotes “A revelatory marriage of avant-garde form and intuitive, almost diarist-style folk documentation.” – The Wire
Selling Points • Jessica Rylan is a highly respected member of the American experimental underground as well as a studied and active modern composer. • Debut recording under her own name. • Interior Designs is Rylan’s first official documentation of her work for solo synthesizer, which falls historically in a lineage of pioneering minimalist artists including Pauline Oliveros, Eliane Radigue, Iannis Xenakis, and Thomas Lehn. • Promotional mailing by Important Records. • Ads will run in The Wire.

Larsen & Friends Abeceda Genre: Alt Rock Label: Important Records CD+DVD: IPT 129 Price Code: 2E NOT AVAILABLE IN CANADA
Featured Artists David Michael Tibet: vocals Fabrizio Modonese Palumbo: guitar, electric viola Jòhann Jòhannsson: electric organ, laptop Baby Dee: harp, piano Julia Kent: cello Marco “il Bue” Schiavo: drums, glockenspiel Paolo Dellapiana: electronics, accordion, shruti-box, theremin Roberto Maria Clemente: guitar Overview This CD+DVD set captures an extremely special evening for Larsen–one that places them in a perfect visual and musical perspective, revealing more than a little about this enigmatic quartet from Torino, Italy. For one night only, Larsen assembled their closest musical friends to play to a sold-out crowd at the Teatro Colosseo in Torino. The purpose of the performance was to pay tribute to the work of Czech avant-garde designer, typographer, founder of Devestil, and cultural radical Karel Teige and his Abeceda, a 1926 collaboration with poet Vitoslav Nezva that minimalized text down to its basic components, establishing a poetic dialogue between text and images. Larsen brings minimalist beauty and melody with a live performance incorporating music, dance, and projections. Joining the group are friends David Tibet (Current 93), Baby Dee (Current 93), and Jòhann Jòhannsson (Touch/4AD). The music swells in gentle pulses of softly stated melody, and emotion clings to each note while glistening shimmers of electronics dance quietly in the mix. The DVD reminds us of what a rich visual experience Abeceda was, and still is. As The Wire so perfectly put it, David Tibet’s performance “provides a vital link between the music and the visuals.” Thanks to Larsen’s definitive discipline and kindred visual & musical collaborators, Abeceda is an event of great subtlety and complexity. It is truly a gift that this performance was so perfectly documented in both an audio and visual format. Where the work of Karel Teige was a tremendous gift for the eyes, Larsen & Friend’s Abeceda is a gift for both the eyes and the ears.
Press Quotes “While Larsen themselves sit impassively as their compositions unfurl it’s clear that their onstage collaborators are strongly affected by the richly emotional music emerging, with their own contributions seeming to articulate its latent drama and passion. A fascinating and frequently beautiful event.” – The Wire
Selling Points • Features David Tibet of Current 93 as well as Jòhann Jòhannsson, who has released acclaimed recordings on Touch and 4AD. • Also features Baby Dee (Current 93) and Julia Kent (Antony & The Johnsons). • Promotional mailing by Important Records. • Ads will run in The Wire.

Overview “There is no need to argue: Merzbow stands as the most important artist in noise music.” – All Music Guide Author, activist, painter, and sound artist Masami Akita has been at the foreground of experimental music for over twenty-five years. Inspired by psychedelic rock, free jazz, and early electronic composition as well the physical arts (especially Kurt Schwitters’s Merzbau), Masami Akita has created a musical language all his own. Merzbear, the sixth Merzbow release in his utterly essential Merz series for Important Records, pulses and pounds with distorted droning guitar feedback, pulsing noise blasts, and the swirling analog sounds of Akita’s distinct EMS Synthi. Like most of Merzbow’s recordings, Merzbear is a significant document of his ever-evolving improvisational style. Slowly, he’s been moving away from his pure laptop era and re-incorporating elements of his pre-laptop analog days with a homemade junk guitar, EMS Synthi, and electronics. This hybrid sound brings the past Merzbow Merzbear into the present and pounds with total junk-collage Dada urgency as only Masami Akita can do it. Genre: Experimental Cover art by Jenny Akita. Label: Important Records CD: IPT 136 Selling Points Price Code: P • Merzbow is widely recognized as a massive figure in modern electronic music. • Part of Merzbow’s ongoing Merz series on Important Records. • Merzbow also releases albums on critically heralded experimental labels such as Mego, Sub Rosa, NOT AVAILABLE IN CANADA Alien8, and Tzadik. • Press mailing by Important Records. • Ads will run in The Wire.

Overview Poste E Telegrafi is the debut solo album from Italian guitarist Alessandro Stefana. Featuring an allstar cast including Mark Ribot and Leo Abrahams, Stefana creates a dreamy world of instrumental perfection and beauty. Inspired by the work of Ennio Morricone, Ry Cooder, Simon Jeffes, Steve Reich, and Brian Eno, he has created a thoroughly modern Western world within his compositions and arrangements. With constant references to traditional music and rural blues, he utilizes electric and acoustic instrumentation with tremendously compelling results. Acoustic, electric, and pedal steel guitars along with banjo, kalimba, baliphones, and found objects were all carefully combined with primitive electronic instruments such as an arpeggiator, omnichord, and homemade vinyl loops. Stefana’s sound is entirely original, yet clearly rooted in traditions such as film music, blues, experimental, ambient, and avant-garde. Most tracks on Poste E Telegrafi are duets, with his guests keeping the sounds and arrangements simple and pure. To call this a “promising debut” would be to dismiss the tremendous success delivered by Poste E Telegrafi.
Selling Points • Brilliant debut recording of an entirely original Italian guitar player and composer. • Features Mark Ribot (Tom Waits, John Zorn, Elvis Costello), Leo Abrahams (Brian Eno, Paul Simon, Grace Jones), Marco Parente (Anne Waldaman, John Giorno, Alejandro Jodorowsky), Enrico Gabrielli (Afterhours, Mariposa), Vinzenzo Vasi (collaborations with John Zorn, Otomo Yoshihide, Cyro Baptista), and Davide Tidoni (composer and electroacoustic musician). • Press mailing by Important Records. • Ads will run in The Wire.

Overview “The Go-Betweens brush up against the Free Design; Belle & Sebastian get tangled up in Blue Aeroplanes. The album delivers heaven from the get-go … a giant-sized pop outfit that proves success doesn’t mean imitation so much as inspiration.” – Magnet Over the last seven years, Minneapolis-based pop group Walker Kong has been on a mission to pour silver icing over a raw collection of mega-hits. Their latest album, Deliver Us From People, brilliantly captures the band’s live shambolic glory while continuing to integrate the highly reflective sound present on their two previous full-lengths. Exploring the relationship between animals and humans in modern times, Deliver Us From People is nothing less than a rave-up brimming with eternal love, fatal sacrifice, and the wonderful tragedy of symbiosis.
