Pato Banton & Friends is a collection of UK singles that have never before been released in the United States. Includes collaborations with Sting, UB40, Ranking Roger, Musical Youth, Tippa Irie, Peter Spence, David Hinds of Steel Pulse, and more! In 1996, Pato Banton joined forces with international pop icon Sting on a reggae remix of “This Cowboy Song.” The track earned a Top 10 place in the UK and South American charts. He was also featured as a guest artist on the 1985 UB40 album Baggariddim. In 1990 Banton released Wize Up! (No Compromise), which included the college radio hit in “Spirits in the Material World” and another collaboration called “Wize Up!” with David Hinds of Steel Pulse. His ninth album, Stay Positive, was a blend of classic reggae sounds with messages of peace, love, and spiritual unity. From this album came the hit single “Groovin” (with Steve Morrison of the Reggae Revolution) and another successful collaboration with Sting.

• Rob Brown is without question one of the greatest alto sax voices of his generation; he is and has been a foundation member of the principal groups of William Parker. • This project raises the stakes considerably, and the phenomenal musicians Brown chose to actualize these pieces fully deliver on the formidable promise. • Service/promotion to national press/e-media and targeted regional press by AUM Fidelity. Overview Rob Brown is an awesome alto saxophonist and a mercurial improviser who is perpetually inventive. Over the years he has been a foundation member of the principal groups of William Parker, with whom he has shared a musical relationship for over twenty years. But Brown has also revealed himself to be a very gifted composer and group leader. A principal focus of Crown Trunk Root Funk is deep grooves, sometimes dark and ominous, with levity provided by Brown’s indelible melodies and the highly exploratory work of this extraordinary band. William Parker provides the root bass, and drummer Gerald Cleaver (who has worked extensively with Matthew Shipp, Roscoe Mitchell, Joe Morris, and Mat Maneri) brings his supremely sensitive musicality and Detroitbred funk. Keyboardist and fellow Detroit native Craig Taborn (whose collaborative pedigree spans Tim Berne, James Carter, Carl Craig, Roscoe Mitchell, Susie Ibarra, Meat Beat Manifesto, and Chris Potter) is likewise endlessly inventive within this tremendously rewarding sonic ecosystem.

Press Quotes “Roy Campbell growls like Ellingtonian Cootie Williams, erupts into long sprinting lines and funky blues inflections that would do Lee Morgan proud, and peppers his solos with free-jazz smears and abstract sounds.” — Boston Phoenix “Roy Campbell exemplifies the type of originality acoustic players should strive for even when celebrating the tradition … Campbell’s passion seems contagious, inspiring heartfelt solos from his side men.” — Jazziz “The genius of [Other Dimensions In Music] is how it embraces the open forms and fluid dynamics advanced by avant-gardists while imbuing the music with what James Brown would call soul power.” — Playboy

Roy Campbell is a jazz trumpeter and composer of the first order, one who encompasses the tradition even as he pushes the music forward. A founding member of the luminous collective Other Dimensions In Music and a member of Marc Ribot’s recent Spiritual Unity project, his last album as a nominal leader (2001’s Ethnic Stew and Brew with William Parker and Hamid Drake) topped countless year-end Top 10 lists. The well-traveled trumpeter has long been a sonic frontiersman, embracing the universality of a sound continuum in which the Harlembound A Train and the majestic River Nile are moonlit reflections of each other. His stellar combo Pyramid Trio has devoted three albums to improvised explorations of Africa, Asia, and the Middle East. So it’s only natural that Campbell would turn his hand to a full-on composition inspired by Amenhotep IV, Pharaoh of the 18th dynasty of Egypt. Akhenaten Suite, specially commissioned for and recorded live at the 2007 Vision Festival, is a splendid passage to a fabled dimension. It is realized by musicians who have an intimate affiliation with Campbell’s vibrant brass stylings and wonderfully open, expansive compositions. The ensemble’s richly textured palette provides a kaleidoscopic tapestry for Campbell’s bursting runs of notes and graceful, curving lines.

press quotes “When The Ex formed in 1979, the band was more a name spray-painted on the walls of the Netherlands than an actual musical endeavor … The Ex made swift musical progress, though, and by the time they made their first recordings in 1980, four songs that comprised the self-released 7” All Corpses Smell the Same, they were a sturdy, rhythmic unit with a good sense of dynamics. It was the start of a prolific run that’s now gone on for 27 years, putting them just behind The Fall for extended high achievement by a punk band.” — Pitchfork “Primal and shamanic, Gétatchèw Mèkurya’s playing evokes something of saxophonists Ornette Coleman and Albert Ayler, with all their passion and in-the-moment invention (though none of Ayler’s extended altissimo screeching), with a shot of honking tenor men Big Jay McNeely and Willis Jackson thrown in for added funk.” — All About Jazz “One of the most striking volumes of this great series—a special edition of Ethiopiques that focuses on the mad saxophone work of Gétatchèw Mèkurya … making for a sound that’s almost like some of Pat Patrick’s work for Sun Ra, but with a decidedly more ethnic feel.” — Dusty Grooves [Ethiopiques 14]

After their start in 1979, The Ex developed into a melting pot of divergent musical styles: noise, rock, jazz, improvisation, and ethnic music have been interwoven under one unique umbrella they call “Ex-music.” Discordant, highly rhythmic guitars and a rolling African drumming style give the music of The Ex its special character. In 27 years The Ex have played 1,250 concerts all over the world, and released over 20 albums. Never pigeonholed into one of pop music’s corny corners, The Ex is always open to new ideas and collaborations with musicians of all kinds. Their main principle remains: to make music with heart and soul, out of reach of commercial trends or expectations. Already well known from Ethiopiques volume 14, Gétatchèw Mèkurya is Ethiopia’s most revered jazz saxophonist. ALSO AVAILABLE

Overview Hailing from Quebec, this duo is cloaked in mystery. Since the release of their blazing self-produced demo, In Vulva Infernum, they have allowed themselves to perform live and have quickly risen to the top of the food chain in Montreal. On Cult of Ruins, the listener is subjected to a blend of super-intense sound layered with horrific howls and relentless blast beats, only to then be confronted with a melodic, haunting, ambient approach that retains immense power. In this respect, Menace Ruine bears some resemblance to the mysterious French post-black metal horde Deathspell Omega, who has become famous for juxtaposing ambient music with absolutely crushing metal. Coinciding with this release, Menace Ruine will reissue their debut on cassette with the ultra-cult label Tour de Garde, responsible for releases by the likes of Ash Pool and Pagan Hellfire.

overview Wool is an album of ballads and lullabies, all lushly orchestrated with strange instruments and rich voices. The album was started in December 2006 on a piano that used to belong to Elliott Smith. The other instruments were added in waves: Jason Leonard clanged on glockenspiels and silver bowls, and violin and percussion were added in a friend’s house. Jaina recorded the vocals in his own kitchen, refrigerator unplugged, with food slowly spoiling. Overview Los Angeles’ Death House Chaplain is a three-piece that believes there is still hope for this world—that the future is a canvas we all help to paint. This is not music for the faint of heart and the band’s sophomore effort, Of Asthma, is proof positive. Frontman Matthew Holl’s voice is edgy and unrefined à la Isaac Brock. Guitar work is driving and angular. Drumbeats are quirky and unexpected. Though offbeat, this album manages to maintain its pop sensibilities. After two years and hundreds of live shows, Riddle of Steel finally return with their anxiously awaited third album, 1985—a soaring, victorious rock gem. For fans of QOTSA, Van Halen, and The Police, 1985 feels like an exciting album coming out at an exciting time. Expertly recorded by Paul Malinowski (Shiner, Open Hand), 1985 shines every minute, showcasing all of the band’s strengths. This is the band’s first recording to feature the same lineup as its predecessor, and it shows. The quick and cagey feel of Got This Feelin’ is still here, but the track-to-track variety is even sharper. Overview With their third full length, GPS spits out an album that puts exploration, discovery, and excitement back on the map of modern post-punk. New drummer Scott Twitchell propels the band into dynamic rhythmic pockets not found anywhere on their previous two albums. Other surprises abound, too—the trombone-tinged “Floater” pushing the band into quasi-psychedelic territory and “The Travel Agent” featuring a dark, almost-narrated vocal from guitarist Lance Pelligrini. Days Like Razors is a strong statement from a band whose fluent use of noise and experimentation makes them among the most unique in their genre.

Sholi Hejrat
Overview This lovingly packaged new 7” from San Francisco’s Sholi contains two cover songs: “Hejrat” by Iranian pop diva Googoosh, and “The Sprout and the Bean” by Joanna Newsom. Googoosh was the most celebrated pop singer in Iran during the 1970s, before the Islamic Revolution. This 7” connects the exiled Iranian’s search for cultural identity and understanding with the broader existential themes embedded in Joanna Newsom’s deeply moving song, “The Sprout and the Bean.” The music itself is sprawling and complex, with intricate and powerful drumming, interweaving guitar arpeggios, beautiful keyboard melodies, and virtuosic vocals. Both conceptually and on a pure sonic level, this is a very special piece of music.

The great boom of all things Bollywood was sparked off by a single smash hit: “Mundian To Bach Ke” by Panjabi MC. Manmander Singh Kahi performed the song with Panjabi MC on all the major stages of the world. The band represents a new form of expression for the cultural and musical movement. Bhangra Brothers have been touring worldwide with Panjabi MC and now, at last, their long-awaited debut album is here! Overview If there had been ashes from the demise of Halfway To Gone, than A Thousand Knives of Fire would have risen screaming from them. But, since HTG is just on permanent vacation, A Thousand Knives of Fire is more like a diabolical plot by HTG guitarist Lee Stuart and longtime friend and drummer Bob Pantella (Raging Slab, Monster Magnet)—a plot to start a kick-ass rock band whose focus would be spreading the gospel of rock. Reverend of rhythm Taj Briggles was quickly added on bass to preach the virtues of low end, and Paul Wiegand was enlisted for his unique ability with the guitar sermon. Less than a year old, this quartet of Jersey’s finest has already been preaching the gospel on stages up and down the eastern seaboard, playing with the likes of Bongzilla, Stinking Lizavetta, Weedeater, Moist Boyz, and Solace. It seems their goal of taking it back to the people has already begun to be realized, and the list of converted continues to grow.

Overview Two years after their SpinART sophomore release Hysterical Stars, Head of Femur releases its third full-length, stripping down to a more accessible five-piece. However, the group still manages to stay true to its ambitious trademark sound, lacing together art-rock sensibilities reflective of the Talking Heads and the organic, homegrown feel of Neil Young and The Band. After successful tours with Wilco and Bright Eyes, Femur barricaded themselves in the studio with a new line-up, inviting several friends and acclaimed Chicago musicians to record on 17 new songs. Now, the critically lauded Chicago orchestral indie rock outfit returns to Portland’s Greyday Records to offer up 13 highly anticipated tracks.

JOHN FAHEY THE MILL POND
Press Quotes “Four ecstatic, lo-fi grabs for the ring of eternity, recorded in Fahey’s Oregon hotel room. Containing the first graspable evidence of John’s throat-singing abilities, this represents the merging of the bull and the china shop. Overview The Mill Pond was originally released on vinyl only. This limited edition CD reissue includes the first-ever collection of Fahey’s paintings in the accompanying booklet. John Fahey has been around since the 1950s, making records (mostly) with just his acoustic guitar. He has influenced countless guitarists, from Jim O’Rourke and Thurston Moore to Nels Cline and Wham-O. His music has been called folk, blues, bluegrass, noise, and even (gasp!) new age, so you’re never quite sure what you’re going to get with any of his releases. But all of them, almost without exception, are excellent. On this EP, Fahey uses heavy reverb, electric slide, and feedback to create an eerie mood. He gets a bit of help from Jeff Allman, who recorded the songs and adds some electronic noise in spots, and from Scott Colburn, who mixed the tracks, but this record is all Fahey. The Mill Pond is all over the place stylistically, so it should confuse those who try to pigeonhole Fahey into any one category. It further proves that there is only one category into which he fits: truly innovative guitar genius.

QUARTET (GTM) 2006
“Anthony Braxton … remains as prolific, diverse, inspired, and intriguing as ever.” — One Final Note “His music is often playful, with lines shooting out from all angles, and tempos picking up only to slow down.” — New York Times
Selling Points • Contains extensive reflections on GTM (Ghost Trance Music) from Anthony Braxton. • Braxton has recorded and collaborated with European free improvisers such as Derek Bailey, Evan Parker, and the Globe Unity Orchestra, and with giants from the “regular” jazz world such as Max Roach. • Throughout the years Braxton has played with a wide variety of people such as Mal Waldron, Dave Douglas, Ornette Coleman, Dave Brubeck, Lee Konitz, Peter Brötzmann, Willem Breuker, Muhal Richard Abrams, Steve Lacy, Roscoe Mitchell, Pat Metheny, Andrew Cyrille, Wolf Eyes, Misha Mengelberg, Chris Dahlgren, Lauren Newton, and countless others. • Promotional mailing by Important Records. • Ads with The Wire.
Overview Quartet (GTM) 2006 is Anthony Braxton’s first release for Important Records. GTM stands for “Ghost Trance Music,” and this four-disc box set contains four Ghost Trance compositions recorded with Anthony Braxton playing reeds, Carl Testa on bass, Aaron Siegal on percussion, and Max Heath on piano. The box also contains a definitive essay by Braxton on his Ghost Trance compositions. Anthony Braxton is an American composer, saxophonist, clarinetist, flautist, pianist, and philosopher. Over the course of his career he has crafted an immense body of highly complex work. Though Braxton is hardly known to the casual listener, he is certainly one of the most prolific American musicians and composers to date, having released well over 100 albums since the 1960s. Early in his career, along with trumpeter Wadada Leo Smith and violinist Leroy Jenkins, Braxton led a trio and was involved with the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians. In 1968, Braxton recorded the highly influential For Alto, the first full-length album for unaccompanied saxophone. He joined pianist Chick Corea’s existing trio with Dave Holland and Barry Altschul to form the short-lived avant-garde quartet Circle, and when Corea broke up the group Holland and Altschul remained with Braxton for much of the 1970s as part of a quartet, with the rotating brass chair variously filled by trumpeter Kenny Wheeler or trombonists George Lewis or Ray Anderson.

Overview Essential limited edition 180-gram vinyl release pressed in an edition of 500 copies with letterpressed jackets. Eleh’s pure analog drones are a perfect complement to Sun Circle’s ecstatic high-volume compositions. Eleh’s track is a slight departure from the sub-sonic bass-heavy drones of their first two records. This time around there is more emphasis on a glistening shimmer. Sun Circle’s Important debut is psychoacoustic minimalism meets psychedelic maximalism: ecstatic high-volume drones, long-form trance musics, and peace noise performed with bowed strings, voices, organs, percussion, and world instruments.

Overview Containing 17 indie, experimental, and hardcore artists from Indiana’s past, this compilation features some of the best music from Indiana-based, now-defunct bands. The eleven-year period from 1995 to 2006 saw the emergence and demise of some truly incredible groups. Some of these bands come from reputable labels such as Secretly Canadian (Ativin, Intro to Airlift), Mammoth (Fabric), Hawthorne Street (Majhas), Standard Recording Co. (BIGBIGcar), Happy Couples Never Last (Mara’Akate), Friction (Ari Ari), and Joyful Noise (Melk the g6-49). But other bands self-destructed long before a proper release sealed their place in history. O.W.L.’s Of Wondrous Legends is a previously unknown album of deeply impressionistic baroque rock, chamber folk, and soft psych tunes recovered from the dustbins of history. To the few who have heard it, it has earned comparisons to Tim Buckley, Pearls Before Swine, and ’60s British prog folk. O.W.L was founded in 1968 on Chicago’s north side by Stephen Titra. A founding member of the beloved midwestern hippie jam band Mountain Bus, Titra left that band just as their Dead– inspired, bluesy jams gained serious regional traction in order to fully devote himself to the inward looking, singular vision of O.W.L. Of Wondrous Legends was recorded at the behest of an enthusiastic A & R rep at Chicago’s Universal Studios in 1971 with a remarkable number of musicians. A handful of test pressings were produced and circulated, but due to the usual pitfalls of changing times, the album was scrapped. The passage of time only further helped ensure the album’s place in near total obscurity until a copy of one of the test pressings was unearthed in a Chicago junk shop in 2004. Following several years of collaborative efforts on this lost epic, Of Wondrous Legends now sees its first public release.
